Not to mention, trying to benchmark “20 ranks” as if all the other players around you aren’t playing the same way you are. You lost 20 ranks you must have lost rating, it couldnt possibly be that someone else played games and leapfrogged you? Nope, system is flawed.

If a brief look at the 20 ranks above me reveals that their number of games won or lost haven’t changed since the last update, then I can use my 1337 haXXorz brain to figure out that them playing had nothing to do with my losing ranks.

It amazes me that so many people want to pretend they play competitively, yet have no idea how an ELO system works.

An average player can lose 10 times in a row to the best team in the world, and if you manage to beat them on the 11th try you could end up higher than where you started. Win/loss is completely insignificant if you were outclassed on all your losses, or played above your head in all your wins.

In my experience a loss has a disproportional impact on your rankings.
If you have an even record against what ought to be considered worthy opponents you`ll end up lower on the leaderboard than when you started. My particular anecdote involves my “team” (we play voipless on and off with a fair degree of success) against a top50 pug. We narrowly won the first match and got unceremoniously escorted off the map in the second, and I ended up losing about 20 ranks.

One last thing, it’s Elo not ELO. You know, named after Arpad Elo? Your pompous tone is grossly misplaced especially since the mathematical workings of anet’s system are a mystery – though glicko would be a good guess.

I like defeating enemies and I don`t like my failure to do so to be public record.
As some of you may have realized by now, solo queuing is over for me. I get moderate enjoyment from hotjoin since it plays roughly the same as solo queuing, as far as team dynamics are concerned.

You would need to get someone who’s around rank 1000 to drop a match and assume that their percentile is rank 1001.

Strategy in this game is very fluid. Any plan that you try to set at the beginning is going to go right out the window after the first minute of play.

If you can’t do arithmetic on the fly or don’t have the stones to run around the map like it’s mario kart, then you might want to check out a different game.

My suggestion is simple: if there is a copy of an item in your pvp locker, then the pvp salvage kit shouldn’t confirm that you want to salvage that item.

Personally I find the treb map to be more frustrating when I solo queue.
Running the orb is pretty intuitive and obvious, but coordinating treb shots is impossible without voip.

Oh and not being allowed to change your utilities mid tourny match is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of. You set up before hand, get in a few fights, realize other traits would work out better and want to adapt next time you res or something? TOO BAD!

You can still change your utilities after you’ve seen their composition.

For competitive play solque is now a locked door. A-Net has just to split soloq-teams from premades and everyone is happy.

Rather, they should have a guild ladder and an individual ladder, so premades have to play under a guild tag.

not every1 cares about rank. Solo Que is still a great option for the semi competetive player who can’t stand the trash that is hot join.

There’s nothing fun about solo queue except for the occasional match where I am pleasantly surprised that my team didn’t do a 5-0-0 opening. It always makes me emo and I just wish I knew who to fellate in order to get groups.

Just now I had a mesmer, while I and an enemy were downed, just blurred frenzy the air. I ended up dying because the ranger used the pet rez and the mesmer was afk.

Leaderboards should be class specific :/

Right now it doesn’t promote learning new classes, since you will drop your ranking.

Its a good start, though

Few players have an even distribution between multiple classes anyway. Seems to be status quo to me.

Updates? Almost two weeks since announcement.

Leaderboards have to wait for the wvw population to settle down in 1-2 months when the median is some arbitrary level.

I don’t know why anet thinks the entire population is such a bunch of babies. Obviously the leaderboards would be volatile just after release. It’s really not a big deal. It’s not like people just stop playing iphone games that get released with leaderboards because they’re mad about the lack of stability.

What was the other argument? Something about elitism? Well, people are going to be elitist anyway.

I don’t go there usually for amazingly skilled players. Occasionally, you will find one, but it’s rare.

How would you even know if they were good?
Between ascended gear and double consumables you can have some guy go full tank and full spank at the same time. Must make him good at the game.

In my opinion, the devs are doing the right thing about having as few skill splits as possible. And it’s good to know that all the skill splits so far have been separated by number changes only.

Then why doesn’t 100b have a slightly faster cast time in pvp only and frenzy do slightly less increased damage to self? They nerfed something without compensating, even if what I suggested would be a temporary fix until they achieve their vision for the warrior.

I hate logging into the mists and all my character’s exotics are gone… thats not my character and I dont want to play him.

Gear standardization is the best thing that happened in spvp. Rewards being littered at random throughout the ranks is a different issue.

We knew from last sotg that beam attacks would pierce, that elementalists’ heals will become more interruptible, what their new philosophy for what thief was, the new idea of boon-hate traits, and several other small changes that were either already implemented in the last patch or not.

To say that nothing new was revealed in the last sotg is just spreading false truths.

This boon-hate business has such a half-cooked name that part of me thinks it was improvised during sotg. At the very least, the idea is still subject to internal “testing” and it might still be vetoed at some point.

Everything else in SPvP is already separate from PvE and PvE’s form of PvP (WvW). It is both logical and healthy for the future of SPvP balance that skills be separated between SPvP and PvE.

They talk about leader boards since 7 months, I guess we can expect AOE adjustments in about 1 year.

The aoe adjustments you’ll see next year will be invisible, which actually kindof makes the situation worse since there won’t be a visual indicator for the aoe.

Stuns that are longer and used to get a burst through should allow reaction.

The distinction between the two would also depend on how much damage a class can be expected to deal within that window. So the distinction between a thief’s interrupt and a guardian’s would be different.

I don’t think standardizing stuns at 0.4s is best.

The idea wasn’t for stuns to be standardized at .4[s], that number was my guesstimate for a minimum cast time to allow for reaction by the target.

Re: classes having different stun lengths based on class
Every class can have big burst damage potential, except necro I think. So the idea that stun lengths should be dictated by class is flawed, especially if you consider that teamwork thing.

However, I do like what you said about allowing for reaction on stuns long enough to kill someone with burst.

Sure. There are problems that need fixing. Good on you for spotting that. You’ve made a thread that loosely copied the subjects of a bunch of threads and aggregated them with the premise of showing the benefits of fixing them – which you did not do.

There was a thread on here recently about the benefits that anet receives from fixing pvp with (somewhat contrived) numerical data to try and support the idea. By comparison, saying “fix it because it’s broken” isn’t good enough.

It’s not that people care what others think… Playing with a bunch of trash talkers is never ever fun whether you are winning or losing. Most could care less what someone says but like it or not having fun depends on the people you play with and against… If any of them are flat out jerks the fun factor goes down.. And having fun is the most important thing for a casual..

For better or worse, trash talking has always been part of pvp.
If your modesties haven’t the craft to ignore the publics then you should consider adjusting your chat options, because trash talking is here to stay.

PvP Legendary Weapons

Guys, you can get legendaries from the weapons vendor. They’re called steady weapons and they have legendary status, probably because if you ever beat anyone with them you’re a legend.

Real talk:
I am conflicted when it comes to having legendaries in pvp.
On the one hand; supercool rewards are unattainable in pvp.
On the other hand; flash legendary animations would just make combat harder to read

Assuming that I am firmly against pvp legendaries – thus making legendaries exclusive to pve – what should pvpers get as an exclusive reward?
I am also assuming that the pvp exclusive rewards would come from winning the monthly/yearly/a real tournament.

Should we get exclusive dye that makes your armor look like the stars? Should we get dye that gives you fancy footprints? Should we get exclusive armor? Zodiac armor? Tormented armor? Should the winning team get a chance to design armor with anet?

- In my own opinion all attacks should allow to be dodged. Same with blocks, one bad addition to the game is some attacks being unblocable.

You don’t need to have every attack be so slow that it can be dodged. What you need is to have a balance between the power of the skill with how easy it is to identify and respond to it.

If something stuns for .5[s] then it probably doesn’t need to have a slow animation.
If something stuns for 3[s] then it probably should have a slow animation, or at least be slow enough that it becomes necessary to chain it with another stun from an ally.

Could be interesting to spectate & get commentary on mirror match duels between hotshots, except you script it so that people start thinking that pvp is crazy fun and awesome.

I brought this up in particular because davinci wanted to talk about 3 situations, so if you made a video which had arranged highlights for each of those then it would give the viewers something to attach the words to visually.

You want to know what merits FA and JQ have as modes when considering them through the gw2 perspective? Well I guess you do, reader.

Requirements of good FA/JQ builds mirror that of the devteam’s gw2 build ideology. Specifically; have a self heal and a choice between aoe, snares, big damage, and support/healing/cleansing. Those first 3 are really easy to come across for just about any profession though the last one is pretty lacking. Really, the only point in saying this was to show that character design as done by the devteam wasn’t going to be an impediment in playing this format in gw2.

They have clear objectives. In FA you bust a fort and break some guy’s science cannon, and in JQ you sabotage the rival corporation’s attempt to mine fossil fuels through combat in order to achieve economic supremacy.

As the more perceptive of you will have noticed; FA is pretty much wvw door knocking / big bad wolf. FA doesn’t need to be transferred if for no other reason than the fact that it’s redundant with wvw gameplay. Some people might argue that there’s merit to having equal numbers on the attacking and defending sides, but the actual gameplay is the same so they’re wrong.

Now we have JQ, which I have to admit is like conquest where you can kill the other team’s points while they’re en route to the scoreboard. I would argue that it’s still more dynamic than “we held 2/3 points longer than you ggwp”. Maybe there are problems with porting JQ, but they’re not obvious to me. If anet has experimented with a JQ-esque format in gw2 then please respond, even though you won’t because chaplain time is scary business and cats are on the line. If anyone wants me to type out a tl;dr post of how I’d try testing, adjusting, and then implementing JQ based on some erroneous assumptions then I’ll do it.

Something seems to be missing, right? Yeah, I didn’t explain why TA is bad for gw2. It’s just deathmatch. “No it’s not! TA was tactically rich and —-—” no, man, screw you. Gw2 doesn’t have any of the team build considerations that gw1 did. TA in gw2 is just taking the allowed number of players into a roster together and then having an nvn teamfight.

Well, it should basically be a standard ELO-Rating System.

They use a Glicko rating system for wvw. Does this mean they’ll use it for pvp? Maybe.

It’s not all that different from Elo (which isn’t an acronym), but you can lose rating if you’re not winning hard enough. You see this in the bottom tier of wvw where the top world has 2-3x everyone else’s score but still loses rating.

If you’re playing thief then the only thing you need to roam points is a shortbow. Whatever build you’re using to defeat the enemy that has a shortbow as one of the sets is going to do all of your roaming things just fine.

You mentioned wanting to take stealing boss kills into consideration in the build. My express purpose in posting was to say that it’s not necessary to consider. Stealing a boss is about not being noticed/seen and timing your damage correctly. Most builds with a blink/teleport will be able to steal the boss just fine, might just take a couple tries to get used to the timing. Your boss-stealing options on thief are will either involve mug+damage or a huge backstab.

Lack of features and infrastructure has been its undoing since day one, not balance.

I agree with this. My impression was always that between dodging and superior awareness/experience the better players tend to win. Of course this doesn’t apply when 10 good players are in the same match, but I’d imagine everyone with the aforementioned perception of balance hasn’t had too much / any experience with high tier premade vs high tier premade – let’s be honest, there aren’t that many high tier players.

That said, it’s obvious that pve and wvw considerations for pvp don’t make sense. The master nerd pvers still run 4 warriors and one guardian for their dungeon farms, does this mean that warriors will be nerfed further? Let’s hope not.

If nothing else, numbers can be changed for pvp only. Wvw already has consumables + ascended items which results in far greater stats than pvp already, so it really doesn’t make a difference. Maybe that approach doesn’t work for everything, but reducing things here and there can be bandaids for balance until they decide they’ve found a good rework. What would the big deal be in making frenzy deal slightly less damage and 100b casting slightly faster in pvp? Nobody would notice.

Otherwise you will always get posters which are mostly saying ‘L2P’ or similar things, even if someone is constructivily explaining why something is OP/UP. Hell in these forums here, someone would say L2P or ‘L2Dodge’ even if GW2 would have a mini nuke which will deal 1m armor ignoring damage with 10s cooldown.

How is constructively complain about balance? When it comes to taking damage, every class has a way of avoiding it with dodging. Since anet will never take balance advice from the player base the only thing players can tell each other is how to deal with the problem. Unfortunately, most of the problems that get posted here are trivial and, in fact, solved by dodging correctly. Each of these threads has been posted several times and forum regulars get tired of explaining things over and over.

You’re under the impression that you’re some kind of paragon of reason and integrity and there should be a forum full of people just like you. Sorry, pal, you’re a meowing kittyface too, so stop acting like the problems with this forum are because of other people, because we’re all those people from time to time.

Biggest problem with your position? There’s plenty of constructive posts here. You can tell because they’re tl;dr.

Edit: I looked at some of your posts and you don’t seem like a loathsome kittymeow. I hope you can accept my heartfelt apology. I think what upsets you is that you put thought into your posts and you don’t receive validation from the devs.

I’m honestly suspicious when I see people say this. It has been my experience that this quote is closely followed by a flurry of useless information through voip.

Strategy in this game honestly isn’t that hard since it’s just applied arithmetic.
