If you mean to tell me that 1 round tournaments with no entry fee aren’t casual then I’d prefer you stop posting here.

why max camera rotation when u have a look behind free command + hold left mouse for free rotation for sides?

I have a button for looking behind, but normal speed for looking around is too slow.
Imagine driving with the default camera rotation speed. You don`t spend 10 seconds looking around – you have a quick glance as often as needed and keep going.

As it is now, because of how obtrusive the environment design is, the only way to know where people are is to have 5 people on voip that have a loose grasp on what useful communication is. From many approaches you won’t have information on a point until it’s directly in line of sight – which for some maps is a challenge.

Maybe some of you can sympathize with the following far fetched and outlandish scenario: you’re solo queuing.

You see a capture point on the map.
Is it a free cap? You don’t know.
Maybe a friendly is on it; is your ally currently free capping it? You don’t know.
Is he fighting 1v3? You don’t know.
Are they zerging the point? You don’t know.
Are they getting reinforcements after you’ve engaged the enemy? You don’t know.

For the record; I have my camera rotation speed on max, and I look around so many times while running from place to place that it would make most people dizzy – I even adjust the angles to see over rocks. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind having the maps adjusted so that I could actually have vision of things, but I think that the maps were designed this way on purpose – especially the forest map.

My vote is in favor of a radar. Obviously being able to zoom in and out of the radar would have to be removed – same with panning.

Not sure if your being serious? There is definately an MMR system. Most games are competitive (although sometimes I have a disaster and we lose heavily and sometimes the opposition has a disaster and the same happens.)

Still there is an mmr system. Why do you think there isn’t? Just joking or trolling or what?

What I’m reading: “there’s totally MMR, but it’s so erratic that I can’t really tell it exists judging by the quality of teammates and opponents I get.”

When I go into a solo queue it’s just a big lottery. During the first couple weeks I had huge win streaks, and now I’m playing with bunnies and deer. Yeah, this mmr thing is totally working for me.

But, considering the rating system is so vague, we probably wont know for sure until they actually release the leaderboards themselves to test this theory.

They have to reset the ladder before making it visible.

No. They absolutly should not reset the ladder again. There is NO NEED to do this unless they are changing it to divide solo and team queue. Then reset the ladder. Otherwise never ever will they do this if they have ANY sense. People will be very annoyed if their hard work will count for nothing anyway.

Because there is no mmr system right now they say that it got reset and then introduce it as if it was there all along.

Mabye it provided bad play, but in 3v3 you are more outstanding in terms of skill than in a 8v8 zerg fest. As in GW1 the mode was a big success, and the incentive to play it was high due to the rank-system. Please don’t compare hotjoin with RA.

3v3 what? 3v3 deathmatch? You think 3v3 deathmatch will be a better showcase of skill? Imagine every single match having at least one time warp and lots of rage because their noob teammates didn’t bring a res skill. Yeah. That definitely sounds fun.

You don’t even know why RA was a success in gw1. In gw1 you had to unlock all the other modes of pvp by winning a certain amount in RA. So people would win a bunch, unlock something where everyone was really tryhard and hostile then go back to RA where they were a certified cool kid. It had a low barrier for entry and could be repeated often without losing too much of a sweat. Overall, RA plays exactly like our one round “tournaments” do. You play, you win/lose, you play again.

If you have an issue with my comparison of hotjoin and RA then you can feel free to argue against what I said, but I don’t think anet has posted anything on the topic so you might have to actually come up with a post all on your own.

why the removal of energy was a poor choice

What a bunch of elitist hogwash. Some of you still don’t seem to understand why this game has such a tiny pvp base. Its not because it caters too much to casuals that’s for sure.

Alright, let’s go over some of the talk that happens:

“maybe we should make pvp have different skills, since there are some problems stemming from how powerful they are”

“yeah…we’re considering that, but we aren’t too keen on doing it because pvers would have to read their skills for a second time.”

Every time some kind of overhaul of skills or traits is suggested anet talks about how those changes would impact the experience of every other player in the game in pve and wvw and so we’re left with not so many changes.

Next time you want to bring up elitist hogwash, maybe you should reconsider exactly what’s going on around you.

Main design speedbump: pvp is being developed in a way that pvers won’t be scared of new and exciting things when they fight for glory in the mist wars.

The conventional perception of pvp right now is that it needs a lot of changes which will make pvers have to read skills all over again when they get to the mists. Pvers not having all their rings / earrings / hair braids already caused mild freakouts, and that is something which anet wants to avoid – because the fundamental tenet of pvp design here is that it should have no learning curve (as far as skills / equipment goes) for pvers to transition.

So the next time you have a totally valid complaint / suggestion / whatever, consider the following:
Would a pver have to learn something new in order to play?

If the answer is yes, then assume that anet is trying every last possible option which involves the answer being “no”.

There aren’t enough players for it to work properly. Unless you’d rather have no game OR play against somebody way worse than you.

You just said that when you play on your main account you get matched up with good teams and when you play on your low ranked account you get matched up with bad teams.

So, which is it?

This is not a topic about the power of skills and their costs.

This is a topic about what factors are taken into account when using your skills effectively. The removal of energy had to happen in gw2 because, unlike gw1, the devs are making your skill bars. This means that the devs have to make it so that the bars have good energy management and flow fine on their own. Once the element of buildmaking is taken away from the players, there’s no sense in having players be punished because the devs can’t make bars as good as players can.

Gw2 has very little to consider when you want to use your skills. If it’s off recharge, you will probably get very good effectiveness if you just press it and it hits an enemy. Of course, you can pretend that lining up a spike or some kind of combo is effective skill use – but that argument falls flat if you can just macro the combo onto one button. Maybe you want to use the skills at particular times? Yeah, you will get more effectiveness if you use it smart, but not so much more that the difference between an idiot rabbit and a pro shark is obvious after one skill rotation.

I assure you it works. With good players I’m always against top teams, if we queue at the same time we will always face eachother. If I solo q I won’t get against those teams very often, if I play my alt I get with loads of low levels (1-40) and never against good teams.

You assure me it works?
How can you assure me using your alleged personal experience.
Obviously my personal experience, and that of others, does not agree with yours.
I guess you must be right, and many others must be wrong.

If they wanted to release rankings, they could’ve done that right off the bat. Everyone knows it would be as dramatic as the start of a cross-desert horse race, but at least we would actually know it existed.

When they tell us that the ladder has to be reset before they turn on the ladder, I will invite you to forcibly insert your opinions in your most delicate orifice.

Doesn’t cost you anything to move on and check for updates every now and then.

On the topic of skill in this game:
There are 3 things you must master in order to qualify as good:
-Reading skill cues. Some look the same, some are hard to see
-Dodging
-Map awareness

That’s really all there is.
3 is really simple, it generally comes down to arithmetic and moving your camera around a lot so that some guy doesn’t sneak past you because we don’t have a radar.

If you ask me, the real problem with warriors is that it’s the only class with easy to read skill cues. On top of that, all their approaches are linear. If every class was as easy to read as the warrior then I think the game would be better off, but as it is now I wish there was a skill activation bar.

Fine.
Let’s talk about RA.
You want to hear about RA?
Fine.

RA promoted bad play.
People played bad niche builds which let them be bad and lazy.
It was detrimental for more organized pvp formats in the same way that hotjoin teaches people to be bad in gw2.
For a while, if you were good enough, you could win with any 4 classes (because early in the game people were soooooooooooooo bad) then it became a test of “who has the right number of buttons that make red bars go up”. If you didn’t get a monk then you’d lose.
Oh
Let’s not forget synchronization! Yeah. If you time yourselves just right, you could sneak a premade into the “random” arena. Cool!

Now let’s talk about what it would be like to have random arena in gw2:
people would pansy around for a bit until…
a lot of elites get pressed
people die.
good people.
it’s always the good ones that go.
it would get boring pretty quickly – I estimate less than a week for the entire community to get bored of it.

If nothing else, I felt like our team was better prepared this time. Karl was a little too fumbly / time wastey / stop telling me what professions do. Also; why does he not know if a skill is a blast finisher or not? Isn’t it…his…job?

You said more than things you thought were being done well and you emphasized what was important to you, which was reflective of the community’s concerns. I was really happy that right from the start Nero and Xeph challenged / inquired about the answers the devs gave instead of just accepting them.

One thing I really was curious about was having player made maps, like the wc3 custom engine. I suspect it won’t be a reality, but it would’ve been nice for players to be able to answer a lot of their own balance questions / why isn’t this happening fast enough questions.

The devs announced it, they arent lying.

It would be nice to have more info on how this mmr works. Also it is limited in its potency by the limited population playing tournis.

On the topic of mmr; the Jons said that they didn’t want to share the details of the mmr system because of…reasons? Maybe it was things. Sounded shady.

Oh yeah! more gw1 references! Because in gw1 players knew how the rating worked from day 1. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_ladder#The_Math
After not playing a match for a month it drops you off the ladder, but you keep the rating until there’s a reset.

If the mmr system isn’t appreciably better than this one then I’d bet that the hidden mmr system was a ruse / feint / lie. The only other option is even more disheartening.

It doesn’t take a lot of time / effort to level crafting and therefore should not have reward because it’s not an accomplishment.

Besides, you can get precursors by crafting rares and putting them in the forge – so I guess he already has what he wants.

If I try and throw elixir H at myself to counter some sort of burst via protection, I might give myself regen. An entire facet of our abilities remains suspect to complete RNG. Many fights have been won or lost because of it, most of it unknowingly. Protection vs regen/vigor, stealth vs stability, swiftness vs fury

Just thinking about how many fights I lost cuz of it makes me shed a tear

Looks like you’ve uncovered one of the basic tenets of gw2 pvp: using skills effectively should be synonymous with using skills as they come off cooldown.

Over six months and we haven’t seen a single “team-strategy” dominate the meta. In GW1, nobody would complain “the warrior is OP” or “the profession I play isn’t strong enough,” but things like “IWAY is OP” or “Balanced builds are underpowered.”

Why is your focus only on fixing individual professions instead of promoting whole-team-strategies? With cross-profession-combos being so underused, underpowered, and underdeveloped, do you WANT this to be a game where every player on a team “does their own thing”? Is this somehow supposed to “appeal to causals”?

First:
There were single bars / professions which were too strong (you may recall assassins being a profession), so that part of your post is wrong. If that wasn’t enough, there were also entire trait lines of professions which were unusable for a long time, about which there was complaining.

Secondly:
Many skills in gw1 were nerfed because they were too effective for how easy they were to use.

Third:
A dominant build hasn’t surfaced because the only appreciable difference between compositions is who happened to be online at that time.

And lo, a champion arose from the pvp forum.

(i.e. [rawr] dominating every single MATs for a year, they had access to PTR and helped Izzy balance the game I believe)

Asp ( [rawr] ) confessed that he would object to good balance changes just to show that he could influence skill changes.

The post is buried somewhere in www.teamquitter.com and doesn’t technically prove anything since the site has no connection to someone’s in game identity.

Last chance for GW2

Anet you dont need discover wheel, just look back what you already made. In GW1.

I like this part of what you said because some of gw1’s superior features didn’t exist on release. Observer mode didn’t exist for the first few months and features like build templates and glory sinks also came with time. Of course, the mmr formula was known to players and was available with a ladder. By the time gw1 was as old as gw2 is right now there had been a world championships.

I hope it wasn’t the level of graphic fidelity that caused this disparity between the two games, because I’d trade ultra settings for more people working on gameplay in a heartbeat.

If you use this rationale as well then would adding gems to sPvP break the economy?

Maybe not break the economy, but I think anet wants gems to be at the highest possible price so that people will more often decide to spend real world money for something instead of what they consider to be too much in game money.

also experience gains in spvp are missing too, lots of other games have their bgs and give small xp gains and even gear rewards for your chars level as well.

Not going to happen though. They want to keep it separated from PvE, which is fine.

Then maybe it should be….separated….?
I really like the idea of calling it a beta and making it ftp.

Maybe. I don’t see how they would implement that though.

You mean because character creation automatically places you in pve so they’d have to redesign their system to some degree? Actually, that task might just be monumental enough that we’d never see it.

Of course………………………………..gw1 had a way to make pvp only characters……………………………….

I don’t really like how often this subforum points to gw1 and says “hey look! the answer to your problems!”

Big, but not gigantic, world bosses

Whenever they decide to make new world bosses i would like to see complex encounters such as giganticus lupicus something that require you to actually use different skills not just stand there and auto attack.

It’s ironic that they have to design world bosses in such a way that you don’t really need to play it in order to beat it. If you had something as complex as a lupicus fight then most people would be too laggy to live.

Better Character Creation and Design

Currently there is only 1 body type or male Norn that makes you look “fit” and not like your character gorged himself on doughnuts while he was fighting that giant ice worm. I suggest toning up the Norns just by a bit to add a new body type that makes them look more like a counterpart to the females.

This is something the artists got right.
The Hollywood fantasy that you can look like Arnold with nothing but dedication is a lie. In order to have the bodytype of someone that can wrestle bears you must also put on fat in order to support that kind of muscle building. To reiterate: if someone puts on a lot of muscle without putting on any fat first, it implies steroid use.

Maybe you want to try a lore argument? I don’t think any evidence exists one way or another to say if they have any genetic compatibility with humans. We know they’re big, love alcohol and live in the cold.

The bodytypes of the male Norn is something that was well studied and done correctly. Sorry if the Norn don’t stand up to your south California bodybuilder nonsense.

Why not laurels? You can buy dyes with them. As if it would affect PvE players, and its only the sPvP daily. Takes 20 mi urges to knock over and all you gotta do is run around in a circle in hot join.

it’s not that simple. people want laurels. people can only get 1 per day. large rewards are tied to them. if you offer a laurel for a pvp daily, that is potentially 2 laurels per day. to say nothing of the impact of doubling the laurel rate, it also forces players who don’t want to pvp, but want laurels, to go blindly “farm” pvp. is that really what you want?

Make it so that you can only get a laurel from one of the dailies.
Boom.
Won’t be implemented because the pvp daily is tragically small and insignificant so why would you do a 10 hour pve daily when you can do a 10 minute pvp daily.

However, this doesn’t address the issue of granting laurels in pvp not making sense. Laurels are a pve reward system for pve rewards with a pve merchant, pve rewards and pve rationale.

Some Conditions should be more powerful.

the only condition I personally think is a bit weak is poison, in pve its almost useless (though understandably the heal reduction is much better in pvp)

Things you hear in pvp:
“this guy is screwed, he has poison”
This condition is probably about as good as immobilize.

To be honest though, most conditions are bad in pve. Dungeon bosses have .002% condition duration, and you want to defeat other enemies as fast as possible. Of course, this really only applies to conditions whose express purpose is damage since spamming weakness and blind is still good in the short term.
