was just in a game with a p/p thief on my team. this was a high mmr game, he did just fine. the way I understand it, p/p is for bursting down single targets and leaving. not for skirmishing like d/p, but literally taking a kitten on the guy and leaving. I was mildly impressed.

and the smokescale’s smoke field would be huge for us. I certainly hope we can interact with that field. now that you mention it though, this sounds a bit too good to be true because it would give us an insane amount of stealth. one idea would be to simply give it a long CD, maybe 1 min.

Why would you want to increase the CD of the Smokescale’s F2 when it’s on par in both duration and cooldown with the other utilities that provide a smoke field? It’s a 5-sec field on a 25-sec cooldown.

I don’t want to do that. but I’m just saying a smoke field on a 25s cd is very, very strong, given how many blast and leap finishers we have. the smoke field in itself is enough for me to pick the pet without caring much for its other abilities. it’s too good to be true.

other glyphs remove condis too. weakness we can get elsewhere and just slot a better utility. so I doubt it will see much play in its current state. not in pvp.

Condi clearing can come from Trooper Runes. I don’t think S&R needs much to become good, which is why I suggested those changes, Guard as well. .

sry I disagree man. condi clearing needs to be baseline or at the very least traited. S&R doesn’t do anything for us baseline and neither does guard. Sic Em just doesn’t work because the pet doesn’t reach the target reliably. it probably needs to give the pet quickness and/or superspeed baseline, as suggested by someone. in summary, shouts must do something significant for the ranger, as well as the pet. SotP is a good example.

i can kill decent signet necros 1v1 on my valk remorseless power ranger. it’s basically 50-50 if the player is good and his DS isn’t full, which is good enough for me.

I prefer fighting necros over d/d eles because you can actually cc and murder them with burst. d/d’s have definitely been taken down a notch though, and would say the two specs share the top spot now for 1v1 and sustain capabilities. it’s good, we’re in a good place.

I agree with your suggestions, but they did listen to feedback at least somewhat.

the fire wyvern is invulnerable while in the air. the other one gives us a hard CC, which we only had on the wolf. and the smokescale’s smoke field would be huge for us. I certainly hope we can interact with that field. now that you mention it though, this sounds a bit too good to be true because it would give us an insane amount of stealth. one idea would be to simply give it a long CD, maybe 1 min.

I thought the same, but then I realized glyph of equality breaks stun for everyone when youre in avatar form.

I think glyph of alignment is by far the weakest, and likely wouldn’t be slotted under any circumstance.

how about a 66% aoe damage reduction in pve and WvW? I think WoW did something like this for hunters and it worked great. Pets should still take full damage from single target attacks and cleave, just not the ground targeted ones.

Heim if we’re gonna slot shouts (other than WHaO and SoTP) in pvp, we need them to be solid utilities for multiple situations. so we’re talking: stun breaking, condi clearing, big damage, etc. Protect Me is actually quite close to being usable, it just needs a bit of something else. Sic ‘Em, S&R and Guard aren’t even close to being usable in a competitive pvp environment.

I think it is important to note that until pet mechanic is fixed, all the other improvements will not fix the ranger. Pets are the most critical thing we need fixed in order to fix the core ranger experience.

look at the new pets. they were beautifully designed, and all 4 will be immensely useful. now to your point, they need to go back to the old pets and give them that same treatment =)

for example, drakes should all have some version of their tail whip as the f2 to give us an on-demand blast finisher. feel free to decrease the damage.

Ranger shouts are still in a rather bad place. Sure, WHaO and SotP are perfect, but they weren’t shouts initially. ‘Guard!’ is pretty much used for Regen and Swiftness but I guess its somewhat in a good place now. So we have 3 other shouts that have very low usefulness, even with traits and appropriate runes. Here are a few suggestions I’d like some Dev to read just to rethink Ranger Shouts.

First, I’d like to mention that unlike most other shouts, Ranger Shouts are extremely selfish; they offer next to no Team Utility (except when traited… Swift and Regen… Also ‘Search and Rescue’, let’s not even talk about it yet)

The announced change to ‘We Heal as One!’ was very promising, but apparently there was very little testing and it was not balanced but nerfed to the ground.

My first suggestions are for that particular shout,

‘We Heal as One!’

The healing value, the traited regen and swiftness and the CD are perfect.
The boon copy effect is very interesting, but with the new flat duration, you can’t even ‘feel’ the boons. My suggestion is to tweak the flat durations:
•Quickness – From 2 to 4s
•Protection – From 2 to 4s
•Resistance – From 2 to 4s
•Fury – From 3 to 8s
•Stability – From 3 to 6s (it’s just 1 stack after all… A change that wasn’t mentioned as it would copy all stacks of stability before the sept 30 patch)
•Swiftness – From 3 to 8s
•Vigor – From 3 to 8s
•Aegis – From 5s to 8s
•Regeneration – from 5 to 8s
•Retaliation – 5s is perfect
•Might – For this one, either keep its 3 stacks limit but make it 15s or lower its duration to 8s but remove the stack limit.

I’ll mention it again, Ranger Shouts are very selfish, almost no team utility unlike 87.234% of the other shouts in the game. Warr can have a 100% 25 might upkeep, Guard has a CRAPLOAD of boons (to self AND team), Eles and Engies can stack an enormous amount of boons on self and allies… Rangers have nothing.

ALSO, by using WHaO to copy the boons, the ranger is crippling himself a bit, as it puts its healing skill on cooldown. High Risk, High Reward. It fits.

Now, by balancing the copied boons, this is when we can play with other Ranger Shouts -

‘Guard!’
It’s fine as it is. It is pretty much only used for the Regen+Swift Stacking, and for the pet’s survivability (protection is really nice for the pet)
By tweaking the base durations of the WHaO boon copy, it brings some nice survivability to the ranger aswell. a 4s Protection on the player is fair. With 30% boon duration, that extends to 5.2s of protection. Add ‘Protective Ward’ trait and you have a nice protection uptime.

‘Sic ’Em!’
Oh yeah this one.
First, you ABSOLUTELY need to make it so the effect stays after giving pet orders (F1/F2 etc). I mean really. The ‘Revealed’ effect is a nice touch, but it requires target. But still a nice touch.
Change ‘40% Attack Speed’ to 8s Quickness
That way, the effect stays when giving a pet order, and with WHaO, it’ll give the player some quickness as well.
Add 8s Fury to give some punch to the pet, and again, by giving a boon, the effect wouldn’t be cancelled by giving an order to the pet (and always the WHaO synergy)

‘Protect Me!’
This kills the pet.
Yes, the killing curse the killing shout.
Stun break is nice. Effect is interesting. Killing pet is not fun.
Either Reduce damage dealt to pet by 30-50% for the duration OR
•Add 6s of Protection to the Pet and
•Add 6s of Resistance to the Pet
More survivability to direct damage and condi damage, and again, with WHaO, some nice survival boons on player.
Other Suggestions:
•Add 2s taunt towards pet on a small radius – It can become a really nice evasive skill; Stun Break + Taunt from Pet or
•Any CC effect is transfered to the pet for the duration of the Shout – Much like the Shared Anguish Trait, but for like 6s. Again, very evasive skill.

‘Search and Rescue’
I’ve had more precursor drops than players using this shout. (Had zero precursor drop in 3+ years of play)
This one could use a bit of love.
•Lower base CD from 85s to 80s. That’s 68 to 64s traited. A nice uh… Little buff.
•Add 3 stacks of Stability to the Pet for 10s
•Add Aegis to pet for 10s
This will aid the pet in rushing to the ally without being too much interrupted. I really like this skill’s concept but… Yeah
And the boon copy from this shout would give some support to the ranger, 1 stack of stab + aegis for a few seconds.
Other Suggestions:
•Add a 2s Fear from the Pet – Oh man that would be super useful in cancelling stomps and would add more utility to the shout. a 2s Fear on a 80s CD.

‘Strength of the Pack!’
This one is in a solid place.
Maybe change base might from 8s to 10s ?
Change the graphical effect to falling leaves Autumn leaves (yellow, orange, red), it fits the nature theme, maybe!

So yeah.

Ranger Shouts = Selfish compared to other professions’ shouts.
Ranger Shouts = Very very low utility except for 3 (of which 2 weren’t initially shouts)
Ranger Shouts = High Risk, Low Reward. Except the same 3.

In terms of balance, here’s a few notes.
•WARRIORS can mega stack mega might to the entire party. Also Banners. And all the boons. They also get burst heals instead of regen when traited.
•GUARDIANS can mega boon mega everything the entire party. Not only that, but their shout trait converts condis to boons, so even more boons.
•TEMPEST shouts grant a crapload of effects to the party, heals, auras, stun breaks…
•REAPER Shouts have more than just ONE effect, and have converts/corrupts
•RANGER offer next to no team utility unless traited. And even then they are awful. High CD, few effects, they put the pet on standby mode. At least make them useful for the Caster himself?

Call of the Wild is a decent skill now, especially when traited. Hunter’s Call is completely useless and hasn’t been touched since release. its damage modifier is too low and it has no utility.

either greatly increase Hunter’s Call damage and make it an aoe, or giving some sort of debuff that would significantly affect the target. we’ve suggested blinds, and I’m leaning toward boon stripping.

Axes

the problem with OH axe is mostly Whirling Defense. Path of Scars should probably have its velocity increased even more.

Whirling defense:
- it roots us
- the cast animation is too long
- it does paltry damage
- it has no utility other than reflecting projectiles
- the problem with using axes in general is that they don’t give us any evades, blocks or invulns. it’s super hard to make them work in a power build

Solution:

- greatly increase the damage modifier to scale MH axe better with power builds. that’s literally all you have to do. on a marauder build, ricochet should crit for at least 2k without any might.
- split blade is great, just make it scale with power. if someone eats all the projectiles, it should be like a shotgun. on marauder stats, split blade should hurt if unleashed point blank
- Winter’s Bite and Honed Axes trait should be baseline
- compress the Whirling Defense animation and damage into a 2 second cast. while channeling, give stability to the ranger. keep the vuln application and retal. this is all you have to do. the other option is to allow us to cast it while moving, but then you’d have to rework the animation.
- the other option (my favourite) is to decrease WD’s cast animation and allow it to strip boons

Another possible change is to take the axe auto attack and give it to shortbow with bleeds on it, then give axe a real condition melee chain.

suggestions to make sword competitive

this is another thread about improving the CORE ranger profession. we all know how good sword is in pve, and defensively in pvp. sadly for competitive builds, the sword only really belongs on a condi bunker build as a defensive/mobility tool. these suggestions would make sword relevant in many builds, and much more interesting

- sword #1: keep more or less the same. add animation canceling if possible (we’ve talked about this before)

- Hornet’s Sting: as ranger rolls backward, he leaves a swarm of hornets behind him that pulses 2 stacks of torment for 3 seconds in an aoe. decrease the cast time of this even further

- Monarch’s Leap: simply make it a nuke that would scale well with power builds. it should be a leap that cleaves and its damage should be increased to about 4.5k+ crit on, lets say, marauder stats. at least. because it has a hefty cast animation, it’s very much dodgeable

- Serpent’s Sting: should cast poison in a cone

these changes would make sword a super viable weapon and not OP, on multiple builds.

not sure who you are, but your list is extremely inaccurate. u cant really create these lists unless you’ve made a name for yourself in conquest. given that this thread is kinda silly, i’ll chime in with my impressions that nobody will care about

from my limited playtime in top mmr, it looks like engies are making a really strong comeback. this is the only profession that caught my attention post patch. signet necros are the same more or less. d/d eles are on that same level, but theyre no longer top dog.

guards are probably bottom of the barrel. i honestly don’t know what there is for these guys to do in the current meta, other than cheese burn or bunker. lots of warriors experimenting with shield but its unremarkable. zerker warriors still doing their thing. I’m seeing lots of staff eles, theyre certainly solid bunkers and imo better than guards, but nothing different from pre-patch. scepter eles most definitely did not receive anything significant which is sad. thieves are also in the same spot as before, and it’s not very good. these guys are now getting wrecked by good power rangers.

other than engies making a solid comeback, I noticed something else – mesmers, with their reduced stealth, are definitely not the force they were pre-patch. in turn, this has given power rangers some breathing room (along with thieves not receiving any significant buffs). so with the ele and Mesmer getting their adjustments, the environment is definitely a little more appropriate for power rangers. we should see them being more effective compared to pre-patch, at least until HoT hits.

i think the sad truth behind this act ultimately is that they simply don’t test anything, in any depth, before making it go live. it’s as if they gave us WHaO while it was still in its conceptual phase, as if it was maybe tested by someone who never played ranger before. this is the disheartening part. if any of us tested this before released, we could have told them within 10-15 minutes that certain boons could be perma maintained. this knee jerk reaction is the proof that they simply don’t have anyone who plays ranger testing this stuff, which is why so many of our GM’s in June were half-baked and useless. i don’t wanna wait another 6 months before our useless weapons and utilities get looked at again.

Honestly, I would not be surprised if no one on the balance/character design team (testers or devs) actually played ranger as a primary or secondary class. The changes they make just scream of not fundamentally understanding the class and if they do then it is even worse than that…

they did well with the druid, but it’s painfully obvious no one has a clue about what to do with the core ranger prof. because they likely don’t play it.

nomad in wvw for full healbot. in pvp, likely it’s gonna have to be celestial with healing power runes. cleric stats will get us blown up because we don’t have enough on-demand prot.

I foresee celestial stats being extremely efficient on the druid because it will allow us to do damage, support and possibly win 1v1’s.

Clerics is toughness.

I know it is, so is settler. both of these stats have been useless in spvp for a long time now. 3k armor doesn’t really do much when you only have 15.9k HP and bad protection uptime.

Dd ele ring of fire actually has less counter play now for other bunkers. If there are 2 on point u will almost always have 4-5+ stacks of burning on you because of purely eles skill rotation.

The RoF change at a comptetive level was actually a buff. I wonder why……..(sarcasm)

An idea of mine is pretty silly, but…

Moment of Clarity Druid

You’ve got a LOT of dazes available to you as a Druid. Take all of them and lock down some suckers. Take a greatsword and staff, the latter is needed for primal echoes, the former synergieses with MoC. Wilderness Knowledge sets up the Remorseless triggers better than most things and deals with primal echoes invalidating Druidic Clarity, not needing to take Verdant Etching gives you access to Natural Stride, not needing a speed boost (though GS/Staff is naturally pretty mobile) means you don’t need runes of the traveller. So yeah, CC/support Druid that has maximum mobility and is pretty tough to take down.
Marksmanship/Wildeness Survival/Druid

I don’t know I’m not sure of the offensive druid builds effectiveness, mostly in PvE. Maybe it could work in PvP… I’m still a little bit puzzled about it^^

yeah i think so. there are a lot of veteran rangers just kinda waiting around. i think the top ranger players are happy atm.

i already have an offensive druid build that i think is gonna be strong, as well as a defensive/support variant. but until then I’m enjoying our decent spot on the power creep ladder.

thing is all the power ranger needed was the Mesmer and ele to get toned down a bit. power rangers are actually super effective right now. my remorseless valk build seems to be the strongest its ever been. it was just a matter of toning down other profs.

with the exception of the hornet trail and torment, you seem to agree with my suggestions! that’s great. cleave on Monarch’s Leap is a must. i called it piercing, but i really just mean a cleaving leap. i wouldn’t mind if its damage got increased a bit. it doesn’t scale too well with power builds.

and I’m ok with that. thing is, I want the devs to have some vision and communicate it. it was created as a hybrid weapon. its AA used to do more damage and it worked really well with the old quickness. if they wanna make sb a condi weapon, then they should make it a condi weapon. it needs much more condi functionality. bearing in mind that REFLECTS are going to be spammed by every single elite spec in HoT. i would prefer if SB had some ground targeted attacks as well.

but in any case, we just need clarity.

ah good point. I was always confused about them being projectiles. so it’s a pulsing field basically.

I don’t really understand what the boon stripping “theme” is. it doesn’t really make sense on any profession other than the guardian himself. necros are masters of condis, yet they get to strip and convert boons.

boon hate is simply a thing introduced a few metas ago to counter d/d eles and guards, and to make pvp more enjoyable. conceptually I think it would work just fine on the ranger. we have quite a few weapons that are dead in the water right now, without a single useful function. just empty. so it’s a good opportunity. we need more boon stripping, especially with the herald coming our way.

WH has received incremental buffs over the last year, but its #4 is still a nearly useless ability that doesn’t even scale well with power. if Hunter’s Call is to remain a single target ability, it needs to have a significant effect on that target. instead of adding a generic condi component, as it channels, it should have a chance to strip boons, say 30-50% per hit. or a static number of, say, 3 boons stripped.

if Hunter’s Call does not receive a boon stripping function, it should turn into some sort of damaging and debuffing aoe skill. maybe the birds can attack 3 targets in a cone and blind them.

Barrage – because there are many arrows here, this ability could be traited to have a chance to strip boons. say 30-50% chance per arrow.

these changes would take care of WH, and add a little bit more depth to the CORE ranger profession.

Shortbow is now one of the worst weapons in the game, attacking with shortbow in a team fight, you might as well not even be there, and you are almost guaranteed to take more damage than you deal (lmao).

1. Slow down the Shortbow auto , but give it a guaranteed bleed, increased power scaling AND torment if hitting from 180 degrees behind target, this would make it way better in team fights, in 1v1s it wouldn’t be that much better since the target can usually face you.

2. This skill is fine as is in my opinion

3. Make this a leap finisher.

4. Change the bleeds from pet into torment

5. Add conditional confusion to this, also reduce the cooldown by 5 seconds.

Another possible change is to take the axe auto attack and give it to shortbow with bleeds on it, then give axe a real condition melee chain.

Seriously love yer ideas, would switch to SB in a heartbeat with those.

+1. every weapon needs to be compatible with condi and power builds. SB needs a little bit more condi output, and a huge buff to its power scaling. the weapon is actually not too bad but requires a lot of tweaking. I’ve been wanting to use it for a while now, but it simply isn’t viable.

I actually don’t really have an issue with burns. theyre fine on the ranger, engie and guard. of the three, burn guards are probably the least effective in the higher mmr bracket. I still feel ele’s fire attunement needs more nerfs, there are just too many sources of burning.

a lot of ranger weapons need to be reworked. most of them don’t bring any utility to a fight, and also have extremely low dmg multipliers. even running around with 25 stacks of might and quickness yesterday I felt kitten unless I was on LB/GS

warhorn, axes, sword, shortbow need some serious buffs. then we can talk about the rest. I don’t mind the pets so much, the design of the new ones is excellent. which doesn’t excuse the core pets from getting left in the dust.

I worked out a 16s quickness build with plenty of stunbreakers and condi cleanses, lb/s/wh, marauder stats. it wasn’t overpowered at all, was looking forward to mastering it.

honestly, it doesn’t matter how many might stacks we get. the profession still hits like a wet noodle, with the exception of LB/GS power builds, which were just mediocre before the patch and remain so. yesterday i was getting some above average results (god forbid) with 25 stacks on my LB but i needed quickness to make it work. that didnt last long. we literally have no other options. the rest of the weapons were horribly designed since day one, and have pathetic damage modifiers on them.

who cares about trading blows? ive been trading blows with eles on my valk ranger since June 23rd without dying, but what difference does that make? signet necro was required before to defeat the d/d, and that hasn’t changed. what’s a pvt engie gonna do to an ele lol? (please don’t try to answer that). and why should necros be required so that pvp can be enjoyable? this is ridiculous.

I was being sarcastic. even with 16s of quickness and 25 stacks of might, the ranger was middle of the pack at best. yet they brought it back down to nothing, leaving the most broken spec in the game top dog for over a year. and guess what? now we have to wait until HoT rolls out so they can “observe” for another year before realizing once again that d/d cele is the bane of pvp.

I’m still fighting mostly d/d eles in my bracket, and the team with the most d/d’s is winning easily. the amount of cleansing, burning, sustain and mobility is outright insane.

could we hotfix some d/d balance balance changes like we did with the OP ranger? I didn’t know you guys could hotfix balance changes, and seeing how this balance pass was ultimately a failure after 4 months of waiting, a hotfix would be most appropriate I think.

I didn’t know the dev team actually had the capability to hotfix balance changes into the game! usually we have to wait 4-6 months for this level of change. this works out perfectly. given how broken d/d eles still are, I’d like to start a motion to hotfix some d/d ele balance changes into the game within the next 24 hours. no need to test or do any QA, just bring some numbers down arbitrarily. this is an emergency, even more urgent than the perma quickness pve ranger build that broke the entire game.
