Time to refocus and clarify GW2's goals?

Anet has no big features planned. If they did, they would tell us to get players coming back. Truth is they have nothing more to add than the usual meager updates that are the par for the course “quickest, least costly change” type additions that they usually do.

The only reason they say nothing is that they know people will hold on longer if they have hope versus being told that there is nothing more than a typical LS update coming.

Just look at the raiding CDI. It will be six months minimum before they get a raid working. They can’t even get dungeons to resolve dps only speed runs, for crying out loud.

I am not pleased with dungeons in gw2 now, more the npe or trait system.

For raids to be done well, you need them to be challenging.

They can’t be dungeon-like challenging where if you simply dodge attacks in make damage gear, you beat the encounter.

If you can pull that off (challenging with non zerg, max dps only), then your raids will be successful. That is the result I care about. It doesn’t matter to me how you get there.

This is the most disappointing thread ever, in the history of gaming. It has out-lived the job of the OP, and NOTHING has come of it.

I came to see if it was worth logging into the new release. Clearly not.

I saw something on MMORPG that the NPE was taken from Wildstar’s leveling process. It really rings true when you compare them. Why? What a horrible choice…. and Chap left.

Are any originals left anymore? Where are they all going so I know what company to start following?

Right, that’s why I’m saying devs have to assign role slots to raids, whatever that makeup/percentage may be of support, damage, control.

Concern: “Raids” will end up just like dungeons, ie, dps is the only viable spec and build.

Proposal Goal: To make raids challenging, to require teamwork and puzzle-solving through well executed organization. To avoid dps-only, zerg only combat.

Proposal Overview: “Raids” will be set in the Mists. Raids will be instanced. All gear will be equalized and picked from the pvp lockers. Raids will be for story and cosmetics skins and for the sheer challenge of beating them with your friends.

Proposal Functionality: Raids will be set in the mists. In order to avoid the pitfall of dps only dungeons (faster boss deaths is less player damage taken) and wvw (big zerker mobs to simply outnumber bosses and using your most damaging #1 autoattacking weapon), raids will likely need to be roll/build specific. There will be a team make up that the devs tune the raid too, such as you have 4 slots that need to be condition cleansers, the rest can be dps. The encounters will require this and the instance will check this from the party before the raid can be entered.

Associated Risks:
1- Puts Guardians that have tons of protection granting skills and lots of bonus healing in an overpowered and overdesired support position.

2- Many people wont like the requirements for roles to be filled. I don’t see how this can be avoided and not turn into dps/zerg playstyles, however.

3- People will eventually start min-maxing which classes specced as what will be optimal. Counter this by ensuring that each raid has different bosses that lend itself to different classes being present. This way, even if one class is better at one fight, you have to consider the entire raid (of course this means you cant swap people out mid-raid and would require a lock to the raid).

2. During this addition, one of the Adventurer classes should have base HP bumped to the same base HP as War and Necro. My vote would be Engi.

For “ninja capping” the Ranger is usually recommended. Ninja capping is where you take out outlying scouts and sometimes other guards first at a far enough range that it doesn’t trigger swords on the map to trigger. Rangers can also solo fully upgraded camps because you can get the guards to target your pet instead of you.

For “fast capping” and general roaming, Engineer is a good choice. It’s easy to get permaswiftness, and you have access to several mobility skills. If you can obstruct LoS, camps are fairly easy to take with bomb builds. Although, you will probably want to switch your traits and skills before and after flipping camps since the best builds for flipping camps is quite different from builds that are good against other players. You should be able to solo fully upgraded camps if you are good, but you don’t get the free tank that a ranger has.

Thief is very fast and can do some sick damage. I have no idea how hard it would be to solo a fully upgraded camp, as I don’t play thieves. You should be able to take down a non-upgraded camp, especially if you pull the scouts first and fight the guards two or three at a time. I’m not sure if you can just clump them all together like you can do with an engineer/ranger.

Warrior has great mobility and is really strong. You should be fine with a warrior as long as you gear and trait him correctly.

Soloing camps is about being able to kill all the guards before the enemy notices their camps are under attack, and having enough survivability that you don’t have to retreat or lose damage from having to kite too much. Another thing that is useful to have is a skill which interrupts, since guards have heal skills.

Thanks for this excellent post as well!

I can post or message a build after I’m done with dungeon tour in a bit if you’d like.

Would love a post or message, whatever is more convenient for you. Thanks a ton!

Engie is good because of perma swiftness + super speed + rocket boots. Of course, that’s purely mobility and will make it hard to take camps solo.

Warrior will have good mobility and still be able to solo camps.

Thief can probably solo camps, but the mobility isn’t superb compared to the other two.

Remember to focus down the two scouts in camps to get rid of blinds first. Once they’re dealt with, take out the guards to prevent the immobilizes.

If you ever go down, take a dolyak down with you (if you can). Scouts are also pretty squishy.

Try not to fight the Camp leader until the scouts are dealt with. You can easily dodge the leader along with the guards, but the immobilize and cc might be annoying.

Thanks, much appreciated for this as well!

Nothing even comes close to Thief’s mobility/run speed. A dire Thief can solo-flip camps and roam with the best of them as well.

Thanks for the advice!

Are you meaning Dire thief as in condition dmg plus high Vit and Tough? In general, what conditions other than bleeds are you going for? What is a rough build? I’m assuming 6 in the last trait line for the condi dmg…

I’m looking to get opinions on roamer professions including weapon sets, gear/rune, and traits as far as they are relevant to a roaming build.

Seems like an Engi with perma swiftness would be good.

Could see a thief as great with lots of escape too.

Warrior of course has some good options.

I’d also like to be able to take a camp solo and so some disruption. Would love your opinions.

Hello-

I have had my 80 warrior forever, but finally feel that it is time to move past exotics. But I’m not really sure where to start.

I have laureled what ascended gear I can. I have all ascended neck, trinkets, and rings.

My back piece is ascended fractals prototype, but is not infused (in fact, I do not know how to infuse the back piece…)

Naturally, after that is weapons and armor, all of which I have is exotic. Is there a good guide for how to upgrade to ascended in a timely manner, best sequence, items, drops, etc?

Would it make more sense to simply go for a precursor or a legendary as far as weapons go?

Thanks!

And like was said I am hearing lots of in game heat on the gating and locking out.

Crazy. Maybe new players did have some problems, but you can tell anet is trying to “fix it the cheapest and quickest way with the least amount of work” type fix.

It is too much work to make a proper tutorial… I guess? Quicker to gate and lock stuff than actually make something that actually teaches you.

I think that when they say that they had feedback from tens of thousands of “testers”, what they meant was that they took feedback from people in NA, EU, and CN that played in open beta tests but did not continue on to purchase the game.

I think they have mis-interpreted the data. I think people left because it wasn’t engaging enough, not because they didn’t understand it. They understood it all to well after fifteen levels and complete unlocks, that it didn’t get any more complex. All of my guildies left because of that. Not as engaging or mentally stimulating or challenging as wow, for example.

My hold over ideas that you asked for, Jon.

1: Make all adepts already learned and usable at level 15. Master and grandmasters will still be hunted.
2: All traits account bound.
3. Remove all tier restrictions. High end traits are self limiting by level and difficulty. Players can invest in a full trait line with full adepts (and majors when they acquire them) if they so desire.

Wouldn’t fix everything, but would be super simple to execute and give a lot of choice.

none of these classes can wield torches. I hate exploring caves without use of a torch. I have a mesmer at 30 and tunnels and caves are so much more fun to enjoy with a torch.

looking at http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Light_source, I see that there are some items that may give illumination in caves. I don’t think the wiki is complete, so I was wondering if there are any other options that are not recorded here that the community knows of?

also, I think anet should make torches a universal offhand weapon for all professions.

But…

2. I don’t like people warping out in the middle of saying something to them. That is my biggest dislike of waypoints. 50 people killing a champ… Poof, none left! Three people tactically battling out an event, poof instantly they are “who knows where”.

That’s what I dislike about warping.

The game is almost two years old. You’d think people who didn’t like the game would have got their refund at the time they could have, and moved on.

People can’t like the game, but want more from it??! Especially when Anet has said they will add many of these things, skills as one of the primary ones.

You know, um, that even GW1 started with few skills and added them.

I don’t think there is anything crazy about people playing the game, sticking with it, and expecting them to add them.

And on top of that Anet has said that they will add them.

So… don’t get your shallow argument that has no substance. People like this game, play it, and want more from it. Not to hard to understand.

  • “We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds!” (We’ve only had 1 healing skill added for each profession, and only 5 new traits for each profession.)

Actually I’m glad they didn’t do this. I understand how people can think this would be wonderful, but practically speaking it becomes a balance nightmare and it’s doubtful you’d actually gain much play-style variety in anycase. Most builds will still only come down to a handful of optimal skills and traits.
I like to think this is one of those cases where ANet said something, then sat down and realised that it wasn’t a very good idea. I’d rather they change their mind that go ahead with dumb ideas.

Meh, having 3 viable builds for 2+ years isnt fun. Of course balance is harder, that’s why you add a bunch of stuff all at once and adjust it all at once, not one skill added and one bug fix at a time.

Yes, I expect them to do the hard work of balancing lots more skills and weapons. It will still be FAR easier to balance than GW1 with subclassing mixed in. I expect lots of build diversity with lots of skills to keep me stimulated and the game fresh.

Right now, it is stale. Before the LS, it was 3 months since my last log in, give or take. I like the LS, I think the world is artfully done. But build and gameplay are freaking old. Really need lots of work on the base game right now.

My analysis:

Anet overcommitted. They released in China, and they fixed themselves to a 2 week development cycle for LS. They have to make sure that the LS bugs are fixed before anything else. It is obliterating work and fixes of the base game.

They do not have time for:

1. Real bug fixes (not the skill fact changes they do to fluff patch notes)
2. Adding more weapons
3. Adding more skills
4. Making traits attainable at level
5. Graphics control of particle effects
6. WvW work. Lots of work.

1. Bug fixes are undertaken by programmers, not people who create content.
4. They’ve done work on this already in May.

So instead of saying “hey, we were off on what we wanted to do”, instead they string the playerbase along in silence, hoping they can milk 9 to 12 months without adding weapon skills, precursor crafting, and everything else they they SAID THEY WOULD DO.

You guys can say, “but they said subject to change”.

They did, but I take someone at their word. If they are off by nearly 9 months?!!!! How can you even defend that????

1. I’ve never seen them make mention of adding new weapon skills – unless you meant adding new weapons to professions?

2. Not only were we told before 2013 was up that precursor crafting was unlikely to make it by the deadline, we also heard about precursor crafting 3 months ago.

3. They could communicate every month with us telling us what they’re doing. However, just look at this thread. If they had to scrap something because it didn’t work out, or it was taking longer for some reason, do you think the people complaining about communication would suddenly become more understanding?

Very unlikely. Anet could go into detail about what they’re doing and be more open in their communication, and people would still mutter about ‘broken promises’ and such.

The reality is that they not only told the community that these were their plans, but they did a full on interview with MMORPG.com detailing these things. This was back in October. You can say that they shouldn’t share, but the reality is that these were not unreasonable goals. Further more the game has desperately needed those changes and still needs them.

No, they didn’t do them because other things took priority. Had to so megaservers so servers weren’t empty and forums didn’t blow up. And had to so LS infrastructure so they can begin billing for it. These things took priority, for obvious reasons. At least tell us that you have back shelved everything for a year to put those other things forward. I prefer the brutal truth.
