First of all, this is merely a wrapper, not an actual port of the game. You could have done the very same thing ArenaNet did by using one of the various wrappers available out there. It has limited success and most people are noting significant FPS hits using the wrapper compared to running it on bootcamp.
So if you want to run it on Linux, I suggest you do exactly what ArenaNet did, take one of the wrappers out there that allow you to play Windows games under your OS and use that. THAT IS ALL ARENANET DID with this Mac Beta Client. They did not rewrite that game for the Mac.
The port was intended for those who don’t have access to Windows. It was never intended to get those of us running bootcamp to switch back to the Mac side. Based on the plethora of performance posts thus far, you’re better off staying with bootcamp than using this port.
While I’d like to boot directly into the game from OSX, I’m not going to upgrade my OS to do so and take a 50% performance hit to boot. The game is a Windows game, it wasn’t written for the Mac. This port isn’t rewriting the game in any way… it’s just a wrapper to allow you to play it… you could have done the same thing yourself by trying one of the various wrappers out there… they just provided one to you, that is all.
I feel sorry for the kittens… they got a bum rap in all this. All they did was look cute and go mew…
Still want to get me one of those well fed cats that roam around Tyria… pleasantly plump kitties!
Yeah, the preponderance of players never actually use the forums, it’s more like the 1% that do. So really, it’s like preaching or screaming to the choir… only with more popcorn.
But history does repeat itself… if it didn’t, we’d never use that phrase now would we?
Funny, whenever I run across a bugged DE or whatever, I make a report about it. Sure enough, the next day it’s up and running again. In the meantime I usually just do other things… not like I have to do anything in any particular order… which is what I love most about this game.
They can say it’s open world PVP and then make it so that you can’t attack anyone but NPCs… almost hilarious to think about…
Another satisfied customer!

No one has been playing 1 month yet… that anniversary hits this Saturday.
I just hit level 80 this past weekend… wasn’t trying to level. Almost impossible to slow your leveling down… you either don’t play or you level. No inbetween.
It’s your username, it’s not revealing anything about you.
Well you level off of everything, so if you are falling short, you’re probably sticking a little too literally to the renown hearts and map completion. Gather things, craft things, kill things that are along the way. Participate in more DEs. Do some WvWvW. Hit some of the other zones.
Trust me, you’ll be 80 long before you’ve seen the entire world. Don’t look at leveling as I’m a level 20 so I should be doing level 20 quests or be in a level 20 zone. This game is just about heading off in a direction and seeing what is out there.. in fact, you’d be better off just not looking at your level at all… unless you wander into a much higher level zone.
Q: So how am I supposed to get gear as a casual player?
A: Casually.
That little flag on the lower right corner of your post… click it. Then state why you are reporting the post. That’s how you do it.
Be forewarned that if you do this without warrant, you may end up being the one who is banned. For all you know, a Moderator flagged you, not a forum poster.

ArenaNet announces that box sales of GW2 exceeded box sales of Mists of Pandaria on their respective release days.
I’m not staying in the dark ages… I’m not upgrading because neither OS has anything that my system will make use of. Buying the latest shiny just doesn’t make sense. If I had a plethora of iOS devices (I have none), needed the Cloud (I don’t), happen to live in China (I don’t), etc. Both Lion and Mountain Lion are marketed for the iOS crowd and the laptop crowd. I don’t deal with either, thus upgrading would merely add a bunch of features that my system would never use… how is adding additional unused stuff improving my system? It’s not.
And your frame rates are just horrid for gaming, try it under bootcamp and get back to me how wonderful Lion/Mountain Lion is in regards to improving your frame rate.
The client is beta, the game is not. Everything that you do/acquire will not go away should the client go live or go away. It’s stored server side.
Maybe you’d clear up the confusion a bit more if you specified that you really don’t support the older graphics cards… because people running out to upgrade their OS may just find that the new OS doesn’t have any newer graphics drivers for their older cards than what they have now. A lot of people are trying to run GW2 under systems that don’t even remotely match your minimum requirements on the Mac mainly because it runs under bootcamp just fine.
I have a 2010 MacPro 6-Core Intel Xeon with ATI Radeon HD 5870. There is nothing in Lion or Mountain Lion that will improve my system’s performance.
I run GW2 just fine under bootcamp… again, the port is written for newer hardware configurations, not older ones. It’s not that older Macs can’t run GW2, it just that the port doesn’t adequately support them.
This port is mostly for those who don’t have bootcamp. Compared to nothing at all, it’s better than nothing. But if you are already running it under Windows, you probably should just stick with it since you are not running a version of GW2 written for the Mac, but rather a port that allows you to potentially run it on a Mac.
If you like out gearing your content, WoW is for you.
If you like a road map to every inch of the game, then WoW is for you.
If you like PVP in which balance is not the aim of the game, then WoW is for you.
If you like standing around in the city for hours on end, then WoW is for you.
If you like spending 10K gold for things, then WoW is for you.
If you like seeing insane numbers, like critting for 108,567K on a mob that only has 300 hps, then WoW is for you.
If you like spending $15 a month for the exact same content, then WoW is for you.

I actually got into the game, played around with the settings a little… only thing that was a little wonky was the camera rotation… extremely fast. It wasn’t until I exited to the desktop that hitting play would result in the endless crash loop. So technically, I could play with 10.6… only once. I’m not going to upgrade the OS since none of the hardware in my system is newer than 2010 and obviously this port was written purely for the later models. I know it runs just fine in bootcamp, so it’s not a hardware limitation on my end, it’s a port limitation on the Mac side.
Well, for some systems you gain absolutely nothing by upgrading the OS, my system is one of them. In fact, it is highly unlikely that upgrading the OS will allow my system to run GW2 using their port either. I suspect, based on their system specs, they are catering purely to the more recent hardware configurations and that if you have an older system, like 2010, you’re best bet is to use bootcamp.
Okay, I’m running 10.6.8 as I have no need for the features in the later OSes… my machine would make zero use of them.
I downloaded the client and all, launched it. Played around with the settings, tested it out. All seemed fine except for the camera turn speed was insanely fast even on the lowest setting. LOL, tried to minimize to desktop using CMD+M but found that only opened map. Didn’t know what keys to kit since CMD+M minimized on the PC side. So I exited to desktop to search for the key sequence.
When I tried to log back in, it just crashed to the desktop. Is there a .plist file that I can trash to see if it was some setting change I made? I really don’t want to get Lion or Mountain Lion to find that it doesn’t fix the situation, especially when I know it’s working on the PC side.
Anyone else have extremely fast camera movements? It’s dizzying to say the least.
Try posting a screen capture of what you are seeing. Sounds like you have the login window right in front of you but it may not be drawing on your screen correctly.
If you have no idea what to do in this game, then I really have no suggestions for you. It’s rather obvious what there is to do. Hence, nuff said. I really don’t need to repeat what has been stated in like 400 posts so far in response to nothing to do posts. You could read one of them and get some ideas if it really is such a mystery to you.
I’m playing GW2 and having a blast.
Nuff said.

For scrolling issues ^^^^
Well, even under bootcamp you have to modify the keyboard preferences globally to get the function keys to work if you are using a Mac keyboard.
Have you tried going into your computer’s Keyboard preferences and checking:
“Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys”
Why can’t you type the password? Are you using the extended character sets?
I suggest investing in a long term mutual fund. It’s not only financially responsible, it’s entertaining too. Try to avoid the financial nerf bats along the way. The end boss is a real killer.
It’s only a grind if you see it that way. I don’t see it as a grind. I’m enjoying the game. I’m not looking for ways to make it like some other game. I’m happily waltzing in whatever direction I choose and doing whatever comes my way. Every corner of the map yields something new and interesting.
Maybe I play the game as it was intended to be played… not like some laundry list of things to be ticked off, but rather just head off into the wilds to see what was out there. Every time I head off, something new happens. I find that refreshingly new. I don’t need a reason to go west, I just go west. West meets me in many glorious ways and I didn’t need a story to send me there.
I made my own story.
I will stop feeding Apple when they turn into Microsoft. To date, they haven’t.
I stopped feeding Blizzard because they turned into Microsoft.
ArenaNet is the Apple of the gaming world… they think differently and I for one applaud them.
Again, CHEERS to ArenaNet for saving us from the Microsoft of the gaming world!
Well apparently you have a horrid windows-based PC because GW2 runs just fine for me under bootcamp. Maybe you should buy a Mac.
OMG! I love you ArenaNet! Now I won’t have to boot into Windows to play
Only downside is I have to update to Lion or later. Any reason why you can’t run it under Snow Leopard? I have a MacPro and my system would make zero use of all that touch-screen/IOS compatibility stuff that the later OSes are full of.
If the game is free, then does that mean all the people who have bought the game will be able to forever inundate the forums with nay sayer posts for all eternity?
Sub-based games lock you out when you are no longer paying a subscription. I see this forum becoming an extension of MMORPG.com… a place where game bashing is the esport of the century.
I love the game. OP is wrong. His opinion doesn’t count. Mine does. I’m happy, that’s all that matters. If he wants tokitten in his wheaties… all the power to him. I for one am going to continue having fun… in game. Too bad I won’t be seeing you there!
I’ve been in a zone where it just started to rain or snow… you’re just not there when it happens. I think their weather affects are pretty awesome… I guess I am special because I always seem to be running into them.
Keep in mind that in the real world… you can go months without rain, never see snow et al. You’re actually asking for scripted weather… because you want to see it now, not when it might naturally occur.
Imagine if 2 million players all reported 2 million other players for exploits… exactly how long do you think it will take them to investigate all 2 million reports?
Give it time… can you review 2 million reports in a day? A week? A month? Odds are they are inundated with reports… and are working on them in the order that they were made.
How else are we gonna fold the map and fit it into the glove compartment?
The game wasn’t coded for it. So it’s not gonna happen. You want PVP… it’s in sPVP and WvWvW. That’s it. Heck you can’t even duel anyone… you figure out how to smack the guy next to you, get back to us on the 3-6 open PVP servers.
I’ve done it twice… both times got the chest. If you don’t see the chest, it either bugged on you or you didn’t participate enough. Gold medals both times for me.
I think the game should be free… just charge the individuals access to the game once… for the initial download. I think $60 would be fair to charge.
What you all think… I know it’s a crazy idea, butkitten you know the world just likes to mess with crazy!
If you are concerned about end game… you are playing the wrong game.
There is no end game, only game… yes, game… spell it slowly… g – a – m – e.
Game on people, game on… stop looking for the end of something that’s not there.
Not wanting to do what is available to do is not the same thing as there being nothing to do. You have plenty to do. You just don’t care to do it. Admit that to yourself and stop stating that there is nothing to do.
Every time someone uses the word end game… a kitten dies. Stop the needless killing of kittens. Stop using the term. Stop it. Stop it right now.
Last time I checked… travel was free. You only pay if you use waypoints to travel.
Look at it this way… you could walk and save a few copper or you can take a taxi and pay for the convenience.
They want you to head out into the world on foot, not materialize at some node, collect it, then pop somewhere else. What’s the point in the world being so big if it only takes you nano-seconds to get there?
I for one love the design as it is. It’s your choice whether you want to spend money to travel or just travel. You pay for the convenience… as it should be.
Rift… was too much like WoW. Stopped playing it.
SWTOR… was too much like WoW. Stopped playing it.
TERA and TSW… didn’t bother, I could already tell it was going to be too much like WoW. Saved my money.
GW2… totally unlike WoW. Finally, a game developer that gets it. Too bad it didn’t hit the scene 5 years ago… I would have had 5 years of GW2 under my belt by now.
End game started when you first launched the game… only difference is, you’re not stuck running the same dungeon ad nausem for the next 3-6 months. If you ask me, the game without any end game is the one that relies totally on raids to justify even playing the game. It’s okay to kill the same boss endlessly if it’s called a raid… but to suggest that someone go out in the world and do a DE for the second time around is somehow not acceptable. “I am a level 80, level 80’s don’t do lower level content… it’s beneath me. I must be challenged with content at my level… and no, that doesn’t include what I have done already. I only accept that in other games… this one promised me a pony… I made that up, but if I’m thinking it, it must be true. ArenaNet, where’s my pony?”
Most likely due to Autotargeting turned on. It basically will switch targets on the fly… usually to the one closest to you. Promote Skill Target is supposed to lock the target to the one you are currently hitting.
I have a suggestion for forum posting… add a new restriction regarding the “Why I am leaving this game” posts.
If developers really want to know why players are not playing the game anymore, they can add an email address for such posts. I’ve seen so many games get inundated with posts as to why they are leaving the game which do little more than incite a flame war. This isn’t censorship… they still have an avenue to express their opinions to the developers… if that is who they really were looking to address.
The forums fill up with these posts rather rapidly and they detract from the posts that really should be seen and discussed. I’d rather see the posts that aren’t about why they don’t plan on playing this game at the top of the forums, not buried pages below them.
They don’t like the game, I get that. But if we find gold spamming intolerable in-game chat, why should we expect “I quit posts” to be any less intolerable in forums?
I for one play this game to escape real life. If I wanted to learn something, I wouldn’t be playing a video game, now would I?
Why virtually run around in game when you can hook up a treadmill to it and run for real? Why not add weight-based physics to the mouse. If you’re wielding a heavy two handed sword, shouldn’t it take two hands to move the mouse?
People play games to escape reality… that usually means escaping everything.
