LA's demise may break NPC text & heart mail

I keep wondering why people think that LA is going away on account of this update, or is being changed in such a drastic manner. I know that we are going to get invaded, but people are just automatically assuming that what is happening is going to alter in such a way as that it will affect everything.

Never once has it been confirmed that LA will be destroyed, or even altered at all as a result of Scarlett’s attack…. It could be, but we just don’t know.

TLDR; Hold your horses before you make an kitten out of you and me.

I understand. But it’s also understandable that people are thinking of the possibility of something actually happening in a living story that affects the game.

People are just dreaming. Let them sleep.

Meta I should be adhering to in fractals?

Fairly broad topic, so I appreciate any answers I get. I’ve been lazily playing Thief since launch and consider myself teachable but also far from inept at my main class. My one concern is that I’ve taught myself horrible habits.

I’m starting to play FoTM regularly and would like to know what the general Meta is for thieves in higher levels. Partially this is so I don’t waste infusions on full zerk gear if most experienced thieves are switching in other stat combos.

Thanks for any advice! My hope is to utilize suggestions here and incorporate a few of my own QoL thief habits so as to function properly in PUG groups at high levels.

*I created a new topic for current advice. If old threads are still valuable just point the way and I’ll remove as need be.

Ctrl + F, “Lion’s Arch”, type Insert New Hub Here, click Replace, there I fixed it.

Please dont. If Anet does that and doesnt even bother reading the actual context the Lions Arch name is in, it will be a mess of gigantic proportions. Not every sentence with the city name is replaceable like this in a way that makes sense. I dread to think about the kittenstorm in the lore forums if such a lazy implementation would take place.

Whoa. Ken was just explaining that the issue is not a big deal and having a bit of fun. Anet is not going to do a replace all on the word Lion’s Arch. It’s srs bsns.

Economic failings of Ascended crafting

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: pswendel.8179

pswendel.8179

Given the input/output of materials and their value to players I would hypothesize that players find many outputs of crafting worthwhile for one reason or another.

An example, I pulled the approximate amount of crafting materials destroyed in the time I took to read this post and the number I received was 136,909 items. There’s a high demand and velocity of crafting materials, which I would say is good evidence that there must be something to do with those crafting materials.

Was this on a day where a daily requirement happened to be “craft 10 items?”

How many of those destroyed materials was mithril? My understanding of crafting is that it’s a precursor hunter’s game for rare weapons, a niche tool for those who actually like it (one appeared in this thread), a leveling alternative and a grind to ascended for the rest.

How many materials were “created” in that time frame in comparison?

How many materials exist in the game to give us a fraction of the actual use crafting gave those 20 seconds.

Those numbers don’t really give me a picture of…anything without some way to compare and contrast them.

Where the new hub should have been...

pswendel.8179

With the destruction of LA the new hub will be moved to Gendarran Fields at Vigil Keep.

While this is nice, I think Anet could have done better.

The new hub should have been at Labyrinthine Cliffs. Think about it. The map is currently not in use and is a relatively peaceful map that could make a great home as a temporary (or even permanent) city while LA is being destroyed. All of the asura portals, merchants, and even NPCs could be moved there.

Of course the Zephyrite Sanctum at the top could be removed, but I think there would not even have to be that much work done to add/delete these things.

It would tie in with the LS as well since LA did establish a trade agreement there.

What do you guys think?

I would love to see that beautiful map be used again and this is a great solution to two problems.

That wouldn’t be an evacuation. That would be a giant pilgrimage that would take months. And with (presumably) no materials or provisions.

Neat idea otherwise, though. I’d always welcome new maps…

Actually, if you got a good karma train and a commander who can win a zerg fight in EotM, loot and gold per hour is far better than frostgorge. Maybe its just the crowd of people (more wvwler) running in EotM that keeps their t5/6 for themselves instead of selling them like the people in frostgorge/queensdale.

That’s possible. I’m fairly biased as a PVE player that I have to admit- I don’t even know how good or bad WvW loot can be.

Nice spin.

Except my point is the material market should not depend on champ trains.

With the addition of Magic Find being account wide, perhaps that might be a possibility when more people constantly run 200-300% and loot fat stacks of T6 from dungeon/fractal runs. Higher level fractals would also be nice too, and as would higher magic find loot chances from trash mobs dependent on reward level.

But as of right now, nerfing champ trains alone would hurt everyone.

Why is a nerf to champ trains coming up?
All I’ve mentioned is that the dependency on the trains is undesirable.
Edit: in my original post I merely asked to take a look at how the drops are handled OUTSIDE of champ boxes.

Either grind or spend money on gems is, apparently, the answer to amassing currency.

Most of everything is cosmetic, which is fair. Vanity items should be expensive. I suppose I just have an issue with champ boxes and champ trains, arguably the least skilled portion of this game, is where a majority of these items come from.

The problem with that, is that Taimi describes the leylines as magical streams that are not physical in nature. So I don’t think you could just mix poison into it. Besides, why would a poison tested on humans/norn/asura/sylvari/charr work against an Elder Dragon?

yeah it’s fairly thin, I agree. I just have no idea what the toxin is for.

Just thought I’d offer this thread something I just found…

healing signet is so strong that the warrior does not have to sacrifice DPS for it. Sure other professions can get better regen , but they have to sacrifice their damage. This is why it is over powered.

I see your point, but for the avarage warrior, it’s not that noticable. I mean sure, I see warriors do really good in pvp and wvw, but warriors gets whacked around all the time. So even if they dont need to sacrifice dps, they still die. I admit Im not the best warrior around yet, but for me the regen isnt giving me an unbelievable advantage, at best it makes me stay alive long enough to hope to win.

And besides, all classes have advantages and disadvantages. Warrior isnt an elitist class that everyone choose because its OP. If they want certain wins, they choose thieves or Mesmer.

It’s about the active ability. Currently the passive is so strong that there is no point in using the active side of the signet. You would actually be wasting health in doing so.

This thread, from what i could tell, is about berserker signet warriors – I’m not sure how that nerf in that niche is breaking the game.

One thing I have been pondering about. During the Thaumanova fractal Scarlet says:

“Now we know how NOT to do this kind of research right on an intersection of those channels. Live and learn, right? "

So, could it be…

  • She’s looking for an intersection of leylines?
  • Trying to prevent what ever she’s trying to achieve from blowing up again?

This dialogue seemed to suggest that a bomb might not be what she is after. Maybe she’s trying to utilize dragon magic and leylines in a safe way.

We’re I to cripple the dragons, I’d cut off their magic supply. If they function like a network, discovering the intersection of major ones would be the most effective.

Last bit of speculation- if the lines can carry magic, why not toxin?

They could easily destroy the eastern side of the city up to the trading post without affecting the usability of the city or the personal story too much. This could have the added bonus of blasting open the wall to the Dominion of Winds…

This seems pretty logical from a marketing perspective. Would give an excuse for “expansive” material in season 2 to compete with new MMO releases.

Unfortunately I think a marketing campaign would be released to notify the public of this sort of content to generate hype. It’s been nothing but silence recently.

Great post.

So yeah. If the player base is so heated- let’s organize an in-game demonstration. See what numbers turn up. Once we actually have a visual representation of players organized this could actually go somewhere. Anybody that is angry about the gem store creep should take into account black lion boxes. Day 1 boxes did not have the same contents that today’s boxes do. Anet continually changes drop contents. Should we demand all black lion keys be refunded based on this?

My trust is still shattered, but the argument stands. Just stop supporting the store if it doesn’t agree with you.

Keep in mind that we forum dwellers represent a minority of players. It will be the sales figures that tell them anything useful, not complaints here.

If this pick sells well, you can expect more in the future. If it does not sell well, then the experiment will end.

Personally, I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Most people already have unlimited use picks and the sprockets are fairly useless so I’m not sure why anyone would care if they dropped or not. If they actually add something useful or desirable that relies on sprockets in the future, then I reserve the right to amend my opinion.

Now the issue here, once again, is the precedent. Next year it will be a new pick with 100% chance at finding rare drops. Not very creative and ultimately an alienated player base is created.

Sorry, Volkon, I suspect you will never see the issue of a snowball effect here and how marketing relations are easily crumbled in the face of consumers.

Sorry, your hyperbolic extrapolation of the matter makes it a little laughable to take the argument seriously. I’m sure you understand why the italicized portion really needs to be rephrased.

The issue brought up is the precedent. However, it should be noted there was a decent idea here which is not terribly unbalancing.

But what should be more of interest is not the precedent itself. It’s how people on one side of this are looking at the precedent and immediately deciding ArenaNet cannot be trusted to know where the line is between “pay for a minor advantage” and “pay for an exclusive advantage”.

More alarming than the precedent is the observation of how the people posting here are dead certain the people making this game have either no idea of what they’re doing, or don’t care.

I admit it was a stretch, but I did so to illustrate the point (albeit through exaggeration). The arguments put forth against me seemed to skirt every point I had made throughout the thread.

As I stated before, I don’t think there is nefarious intent. I do believe it was oversight. The thing is, with the exclusive skin debacle late last year I do have less trust in the management of resources and management of the store and the direction for it. Yes. What way should consumers read the recent shift in decisions they have made?

Yes, they removed the skin. Yes, they amended…but how did it get to that point? Lack of knowledge in their own mission? Lack of management on gem store resources? I’m unsure, and that uncertainty is alarming as a consumer.

I stared reading this post outraged. And then I stopped be outraged and started being smart. The amount of Watchwork Sprockets you will get from this pick will be tiny compared with just buying gems to gold and then TP. There is nothing wrong with this pick at all. It’s a cosmetic skin, with COSMETIC loot. No one will buy this skin and make money from it. They will buy the skin for the looks, and the way its passive fits its theme.

tl;dr. the pick will LOSE you money, making it pay to LOSE.

Perhaps you should have continued to read, as you missed the point entirely.

The issue is the precedent. What is to say a new pick doesn’t come out in a month which gives a 40% chance at sprockets? Then in a year every hit.

The issue is TRUST and customer satisfaction. Right now I have no reason to believe any purchase I make will not get trumped and therefor have no reason to buy from the shop.

Yes, technological progress sucks. We should stop getting new things because they might be better than old things and that will make old people mad that their old things aren’t new things with new things added to them.

You would have a point if technology limited these items. Instead it’s artificial limitation, or lack of foresight on a net’s marketing team. These are not washing machines.

if you honestly have that little faith in the devs. Then go find another game. Every “slippery slope” argument operates of the idea that the devs are permanently looking for ways to cheat us. Anyone who genuinely believes that this is their goal should go find a different game.

Do you really think they designed these picks back in 2012 with the intent on releasing them in Jan 2014 or something? Someone, somewhere, is sitting around thinking to himself “How can we make these a little better or a little more tempting for people to buy?” That’s a good thing, for that’s what will result in new and interesting things in the future as well. As long as they continue to avoid the dreaded “pay to win” like they are then I have no problem with this.

I am not insinuating nefarious intent. I’m stating poor marketing. They need sales, I get that. A better thought process would have been “let’s add an account buff that gives 20% chance on picks giving watchworks.” And release a new Watchwork skin. They could do that infinitely with gather ables and nobody would have cared, because it is in fact worthless.

Now the issue here, once again, is the precedent. Next year it will be a new pick with 100% chance at finding rare drops. Not very creative and ultimately an alienated player base is created.

Here’s something to think about. Has anything been said as to whether or not there wasn’t going to be another means of getting these sprockets in game?

I know that you can get them through normal game play now, and I know that method is temporary currently. But I haven’t heard them say there won’t be another means of getting these items after the temporary means is removed.

If there was a means in-game of getting these, would this whole argument have even been posted?

When you complete the current Origins of Madness meta, you get a home instance sprocket node to mine daily. It is available in game through normal game play.

And, yes, regardless of that fact, this thread has still been made. And goes on and on…

What about a new player who comes in after the Meta is closed and after the pick has been pulled off the gem store?

While I won’t comment on whether or not I think this is P2W, do people really feel entitled to a refund for their previous purchases and if so why?

I bought a TV one time that was HD and large…now they have new ones that are thinner with a better picture for cheaper than what I paid originally for my TV in the past but I don’t feel entitled for a refund or an updated TV. I bought the original iPhone for $400 bucks but then soon after they released a new version for $200 and it had 3g and more features so should I be entitled for a full refund or an upgraded version for free?

Using the examples, why do so many people feel they deserve a refund or an update to their existing pick? Please no trolling or flaming, I am just curious on the communities thought on that.

There is no difference between your example and what is going on with the picks. I’d love to see the look on a Best Buy employee’s face if someone went into the store and demanded that their TV be upgraded because a newer one came out a month after they bought it.

I have no sympathy for people who blew all their millions of karma on those Orr boxes just for a chance to get lodestones.

I do have sympathy, however, for newer players.

I play about 3 or 4 days a week for a few hours at night and have since launch… I feel stepped on every patch that limits and gates my ability to accumulate currencies.

Get no life or get out of GW2, apparently.

Karma and Obsidian Shards

The use of materials in this game is appalling, and none more so than obi shards. Since the karma nerf it is almost essential to run fractals for them. Those of us who didn’t hoard millions of karma are the ones who took the hit with that patch fix.

The only saving grace is obi shards are only used in legendaries and ascended items so far.. so one can just opt out of Arena.net’s idea of end game and avoid them.

So little story has occurred in this game that a few conversation points does not constitute as an amazing story update. Can’t blame the guy for being bored.

This only furthers my suspicions on her goal. The full thought here But in short: I think that she is weakening the supporters of the Pact, being influenced by an Elder Dragon (most likely Mordremoth, but could also be Primordus, the DSD, or Zhaitan (Risen remain fanatical post-Z’s death) from most to least likely).

@pswendel: By her journal, it sounds like she was originally fighting it but eventually accepted it.

This quote would suggest the opposite. Culling the herd would be making it stronger and removing the weak members.

Edit:

“It communicated with me through images of death, destruction, and destiny. I must know more. I must confront it and put an end to this madness.”

From the last page of the journal. It seems to me she is not lost, as the previous page suggests, but at the point where she is helpless.

You may be right. It could be that her only way out is by giving in, and thereby doing the will of this entity she is saved from the hell she’s in.

A martyr would be more fitting for the villain of this story, however, than a bad guy for the sake of being bad.

presumably to help clear her mind of the invasive force that plagues her… that seems to be her only goal is to confront that which is making her go bananas.

At the end of the Marionette event the following conversation can be overheard:

Rox: I’m starting to think Scarlet doesn’t care whether she wins or loses against us.

Marjory: What does that mean?

Rox: She doesn’t fight like she wants to win. She sacrifices her weapons to take some of us out. It’s like she’s culling the herd.

Kasmeer: Our herd.

Rox: Yeah. Tyria’s defenders.

I like this idea but feel a bit separated from the past 13 months of narration for this to have been the original intent for Scarlett. However, the seed is now planted for this to be the plan all along…so…

How believable is this for you? Is she tempering us for the final fight to free her from the clutches of her imprisoned insanity?
