Here’s the post where John Smith confirmed that the gem exchange operates using a supply of gems and gold. This means that other than the initial seeding amount and paid tournament winnings, all gems in the exchange come from players and must have initially been purchased with real money.
From https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/bltc/Who-sets-Gem-prices/page/7#post705345
There seems to be some confusion:
The currency exchange has a supply of Gems and Gold.If players are converting Gold to Gems, then the Amount of Gold player will receive for their gems goes up.
If players are converting Gems to Gold, then the amount of Gems players receive for Gold goes up.The exchange rate changes based on the scarcity of each supply. You cannot inflate it, it’s an exchange rate. As players purchase in one direction, it entices purchases in the other direction.
@ Cruzyo: While inflation may account for some of the increase in gold -> gem prices, the recent additions to the gem store are likely to have had a larger influence. After all, people converting gold -> gems are (usually) wanting to spend those gems in the gem store. If there is increased demand for gems, then that will help push the rate up, inflation by itself won’t do anything if no one wants gems in the first place.
that quote still does not precisely give an answer on what percentage of gems bought with gold come out of thin air from Anet and what percentage actually comes from a player who paid real money for it.
I’m kinda hoping they add some sort of dragon stuff to WvW.
and whatever happened to the bar fight minigame we were suppose to get?
Another thread?! Please use search in the last 5 pages I can see at least 3 threads about this. Stop QQing, I’m on crystal desert and I never waited to play, sometime I’m wondering if I play the same as everyone…
this is not a QQ about full servers, just a suggestion about what should be done about this.
I wish less people would rush through everything.
you can all transfer for free to a very high server.
but at the rate its currently going it seems that every NA server will be full by the end of the month.
I’m gonna capture this supply camp all by myself cause I’m a big boy now.
I think it’s is more likely to be the way the numbers are calculated is causing them to show “Full”. 15 days is ridiculous tbh the time scale has to be much, much longer I recently popped into Rift for a few free days I’d not played that for over a year all my characters were still there just where I left them and on a full server after server merges. Plus booting ppl off a server as you suggest is a sure way to ensure they don’t return and no game should ever want to stop players returning…
Well maybe 30 days would be better.
and when I say boot off the server I mean temporarily so it does not take up space and when they come back the account will get back in the server for free.
It must be really hard now for new players to play with friends on full servers.
February is apparently a huge WvW update but I have no idea what January will be.
If it is really true that people who dont even play anymore are taking up server space and causing them all to be “FULL” can Anet just change it and make it so that if an account has been inactive for 30 straight days it is marked as inactive and booted off the server freeing up space for other people and when the person comes back the account gets back in the server for free until they leave for 30 days again.

I don’t think you will get a response. The system is designed as a black box, from what I gather. Stuff goes in, stuff goes out, but what happens inside is kept a secret.
I would hope that all the gems are generated by players buying them from ANet. Why? Because then all future expansions could be sold for gems, without any loss to ANet. You might buy your stuff for gold made by playing, but, all the gems you buy for gold, have been paid for by someone else in real cash. If true, this would be a fantastic system, making the playfield more equal, rich people spending real money so that poor people can play. But I believe this was asked many times now, and the threads are always ignored. It’s a black box. ANet probably puts in some free gems into it, generating them out of the air, because.. the black box is too big to fail! The business must go on, even if no one is buying gems. Go inflation.
I am also hoping that 100% of gems originate from someone buying it with real money because it would be awesome to know that you are actually supporting anet by spending gold instead of real money.
As an elementalist, no. I was like you, stubborn and living off of fire attunement only until I hit Orr. That place required the use of snares/stuns/kb to stay alive as a squishy light armored elementalist with low health. Little by little I learned when to swap, what skills to use in what order, etc., and now I’m much more capable of taking on multiple mobs and vets than by just spamming fire attunement skills.
Locking into one attunement and swapping weapons locks you into a certain playstyle, which limits your effectiveness severely. Example: You swap to a staff, locked in fire attunement, and your party suddenly gets hit with a 60-sec poison, fire, or bleed. If you could swap, you could drop a healing rain over probably at least three and get rid of it without forcing them to burn stronger condition removal skills. Instead you’re being a selfish player who’s locked into DPS mode, potentially letting the poor guy who forgot a condition removal skill just drain his health out.
Learn to use the class. Don’t request changes to the class because you refuse to master its full potential. Having dabbled in most classes, the elementalist is the most complex to use in my opinion, as well as the least forgiving when you screw up.
Slightly off topic: That out-of-combat weapon swap we elementalists have been asking for since the BWE’s would be a really nice feature.
and what if there is already over 10 people in the group laying down AOE heals what good would I be to just add to all of that, I would be more efficient in a large WvW group if I can instantly keep switching from long range damage(staff) to short range(dual daggers)
I’d like to keep my attunements, thanks. Out of combat weapon swapping would be great. This suggestion however, would fundamentally break elementalists and what little ability synergy they have.
I’ve already said that this would be completely optional.
eles being able to choose wether they want to switch attunements and no weapon swap, or lock into one attunement and gain weapon swap.
it still wont make the ele class imbalanced. because you are getting stuck into one attunement only and get to swap weapons its not like eles will have weapon swap as well as all 4 attunements, even I would disagree with that.
but IMO I think it would be a good idea to give eles the choice of either having weapon swap or attunement changing.
I disconnect every few minutes while in WvW and many area in pve. this game just has pretty unstable and bad servers.
Great suggestion.
Lets kill the entire Elementalist class!
can’t see at all how that would kill the class, its about freedom and letting us play the way we want. if elementalist get the option to disable attunement switching to gain weapon swap it would accomodate more different playing styles.
It doesn’t work like that.
The power added with the points in the fire trait increases damage for all elements.
All other elements do less damage regardless of the traits you pick. But they are always needed for control and support. You can’t just stick to one element and spam skill on recharge. That’ll get you killed.
but they have said over and over that we can play this game the way we want with our own different play styles. I dont see why not I can’t just lock into the fire attunement and gain weapon swap.
If you’re always using 1 attunement, “fire”, then that is your first problem… start switching attunements back and forth… It helps a great deal… If you get caught up in a 1 v 1 and you have your staff out, then I’m pretty sure you could take him, if you dodge and use your AOE’s usefully.
If you’re starting to lose, you could easily stun him in air attunement, push him away, speed yourself up, freeze the ground in water attunement, and lay down a crippling line in Earth attunement then you’re home free! While you’re at it, you could probably snare him in earth attunement, as well.

I does not work well for me since I sort of put all my traits into fire the other attunements do little damage. but I find staff/double daggers swapping would be very useful since I can take almost anyone 1 on 1 with double daggers fire.
not being able to switch attunements during battle.
I always feel that I need to be switching from staff to double daggers in WvW.
staff for long range attacks and defense of keeps and daggers if I run into a 1 on 1 fight and I am always using 1 attunement “fire”.
so please let us choose between switching attunements or having weapon swapping its very annoying to have to equip 2 daggers and staff back and forth from the inventory while I am in world vs world.
ArenaNet has recently said in an interview that they plan on doing huge content updates every month forever. now Idk about you but this sounds incredibly difficult for any mmo company to keep up with and also very expensive for a game with no subscription costs.
now I see mmo’s like runescape that do small new content every week and it adds up to a lot of content for a month…I’m guessing if they can do that why not Anet?
does anyone here have any doubts?
server transfers are free right now.
well tbh I see no reason why Anet shouldn’t tell us the answer to this, it seems like a pretty minor thing.
I’m interested too!
would be nice to get a quick official response lol.
Did ArenaNet forget about those shirts we voted for on their facebook page?
why such a big wait for them imo it would have been a good idea to sell them when the hype for GW2 was at its highest.
I am just curious after a discussion I had a while ago.
when you buy gems with in game gold do they come directly from Anet or did it originally come from someone who paid for it with real money?
are the only gems that come from Anet the ones purchased with real money?
If so, what message would you get in game if you tried to buy gems with gold but not enough players were selling them currently. is it something like “no gems avaliable”
I personally do not agree with letting players use gold to buy gems from Anet and only from players because it would be nice to know that for every box o fun I see it has helped support this awesome company. can they please make it so 100% of the gems originated from someone who paid for it with real cash aside from paid tournament winnings?
Sorry if this question has been answered before.
EDIT: I have also heard from a few players that a large amount of gems purchased with gold come out of thin air from Anet, if this is true then they are letting themselves be cheated.

I think it is only in the beginning starter areas that events repeat often and does not feel very dynamic they keep it like that for a reason I do not know, but the higher level the area the more dynamic and world changing things will get, but imo I think it would be good if the starter areas are made just as dynamic as the level 70+ and 80 zones.
they should of tested DE’s more during the betas.
I think the kessex hills area events need some serious increase in difficulty, every event in that area is impossible for it to fail they always succeed 100% of the time so the same things keep happening over and over, Anet needs to work on kessex hills to make it so that events have a higher chance of failing and increase the enemy intelligence.
adding dragon boss fights to WvW imo would be a good way to balance things up a little, lets say if one server has over 80% of the circle when you press B, the two losing servers can do something to summon a powerful dragon to attack all the winning servers keeps, towers, etc and while they are all busy fighting dragons this will give the two servers a chance to catch up a little.
this imbalance thing gets pretty annoying, sometimes one server has 100% of everything and its nearly impossible for the other two to capture anything.
well the more defenses people have access to the less emails customer support will get of hacked accounts.
they should also make it possible to challenge someone or a group of people to a duel in an spvp map, like they press accept to the spvp duel and you all teleport there and teleport back when its over.
Blizzards Authenticator is an RSA device and would work. Google lets you setup your Google Account to have a twostep process, The typical User/Pass, and then a code texted to a phone you register, that you enter before you can fully log in. This would work and possibly be cheaper than a RSA server and the infrastructure and support needed for it.
this is pretty much make it virtually impossible to hack anybodies account who are using dial in authentication.
and everyday on gw2 facebook I keep seeing more and more people saying they are hacked, the sooner something like this is made the better.
Hi, since I am seeing so many people complain about being hacked and hearing about how over 11,000 people have had their accounts hacked why not use this system that WoW has that pretty much stops about 80% of all hacks.
its called the free dial-in authenticator where you just register a cell phone and whenever you try to play from another location it asks you to call a number on the screen with the cell phone that is registered and dial in a 4 digit pin number that you made, also there should be character pins like in Aion.
this will essentially stop the majority of hacks and I know this is probably the wrong place but there is no suggestion forum here.
