Which server are you guys on ? Anyway I’m up for this
Hybrid Ranger
Could I get your availability please? And darkhaven here.
We could pick a server and call it the unofficial sPvP dueling server
Moderator edit: removed CoC infraction
Sure, you mean sPvP server or game server?
Having useful CC “ruins” makes a game less skillful by adding another type of strategy and level of complexity.
You sound like children when you declare everything you enjoy to be “skillful” and everything you don’t like to “remove the need for skill”. Nobody is buying it and it’s completely transparent.
CC, BTW, doesn’t necessarily mean losing control or complete control of a character. (Knockback, Snare, Root type effects). There’s actually a lot of CC in this game it’s just mostly ineffective like Healing because the game currently is mostly just about running around like chickens trying to execute your DPS rotations on targets. The only real CC use seems to be to stun or trap the target your currently assisting/bursting down.
Going to need a lot more depth if you want a competitive game that supports group vs group or larger fights.
Hmm. When I fight necros I have to save interrupts for their life siphon, watch for marks and save my burst for when I know they’re DS is low. When I fight a thief I have to know when to burst by keeping track of stealth timers. Eles by watching attunements. The list goes on. If you’re only trying to go through a rotation, or playing like a decapitated chicken I can understand why this PvP system can seem frustrating.
I have updated the list, and would like to encourage people, as mentioned by NeverSayDie, to point fellow players to this thread if they would like to participate.
I have won more 1v1s on my ele against both classes than I have lost. With high burst opponents you just have to know the optimal time to use your defenses.
I can play Dps-warrior, condition(pistol) or backstab-thief, shatter-mesmer and necro, condition-thief being my strongest class probably.
EDIT: Not sure when I’m playing, i’m not playing much with the horrible state of sPvP though.
Well. Whenever you can, let us know so I can put your availability up.
I’m mostly a PVE player, I enjoy leveling and venturing into dungeons with friends or even PUGs. Since fractals have made it really hard to get into “old” dungeons and that the lack of LFG tool makes things even worse (not to mention I haven’t started fractals with everyone else and now I only see people doing fractals level 5 and above which leaves me behind with none to do; whoever invented that system wasn’t in his right mind…) I decided to give PvP a try.
Got into silent of the desert storm, pretty cool map, I was actually excited to participate. I fought against a few guys till I got that Mesmer down. Was about to finish him, he vanished, threw some pebbles at me (or whatever spell he used), vanished again, threw some more pebbles and nearly got me down…
I really didn’t like the down state in PVE, no true healer class but everyone is a healing class in disguise. I learned to do with it somehow, though disappointed.
But that experience in PVP… one man in downed state who almost got me killed ridiculously fast and got a second chance even though I had him … I’d lol if it wasn’t so sad.
Pretty much through with PVE as it is now, definitely through with PVP, won’t play WvW as long as the clipping is not fixed… Good thing there’ no subscription, I would have terminated it by now.
I don’t understand how you expected to succeed when you were a) just starting and b) don’t understand enemy downstates.
PvP is a bit different here, but great once you get the hang of it.
And perhaps end with “Our time is now”
Oh good idea.
one question…..Why?
Dont get me wrong love the gw2 game but….why?
If the systems aren’t in the game why should we go out of our way to make a makeshift infrastructure that would be semi stable at best……
Should of been launched with it……
Current system is like LoL w/o ELO or GvG’s in GW1 without a rating system….
Most people have moved on to the new halo or the new cod and even back to WoW…..and with planet side 2 coming in mere hours…..there really is no point in pvping until these BASIC structures are in….
Because people want certain things and they aren’t here yet officially. So why wait around when we can organize it ourselves?
I find this so strange honestly. That so many people say they like the game but don’t want to do anything but gripe at Anet instead of doing things themselves.
Counter strike started with no infrastructure to support large scale stat tracking and it became the biggest game in esport. Players made their own leaderboards, clans, clan sites, and arranged their own tournaments.
When players wanted deathmatch, or something else they changed the game.
Players these days want to blame the developers so much, that they forget how little the developer has to do with just how far a game goes.Sigh…your comparison is so horrid…..just wow…..
CS is an OPEN source game [in fact CS was a mod wasn’t even a standalone game], the players have control over the ENTIRE game, they can mod it however way they wanted, because they could change ANYTHING they wanted in the game, custom maps, custom game modes, admin powers, and ect. CS built a ladder system because they were given the power to do so. Was in Cal-M in cs man those were fun tournys.
In gw2 we are given no power no customization of any aspect of the game, being forced to play the same map rotation in tpvp and in spvp [not to mention how dismally bad crapicorn is].
And on top of all that we are forced to play Cap points? AB/RA/TA mix up of gw1….. AB was the least popular and least competitive of the pvp types, hell most people didn’t think of it pvp, just a way to farm faction.
If we started with deathmatch that would have given us flexibility, in that we could add more objectives. Impossible with cap points because we HAVE to sit in those mundane little circles.
So yes i still don’t see why we should bother.
The point isn’t the mods themselves, just like the WoW comparison wasn’t about doing world or faction PvP. It is show that communities put in an effort, and the effort is what made the game great.
sPvP and WvWvw can be so much more than it is now. To many people just want Anet to hold there hands and show them were the fun is.
In my opinion, mmos are less about the content devs give us and more about what we do with it.
2 x eles is very fun to watch, 2 d/d eles that is, good fight too
Very true. I’m pretty sure I’v fought you before.
Write a prologue and I’ll see what I can do.
Its going to start with in a world. It must.
Who’s going to be the commenter?
I used to take radio-tv courses but my voice is too epic for talking fast. But what fits it might be an opening narration or something like announcing blah blah blah vs blah blah blah
And by epic, I mean this genre of voice

I think it would be well suited for an intro. =D

I can’t watch that atm. But I will soon.
Please, let guild mates know whats going on here so we can get even more participants. Also, don’t forgot to post duel times here, and winners so that I can post them!
Edit: Get some video if you want to be included in the community dueling videos.
ill bite!
What we need is a list of people who can commit. I think the easiest way is to use one your reserved posts and fill it with players names and what time they are available that way we can calculate what time is best to set the tourney up.
ALSO VERY IMPORTANT! POST YOUR TIME ZONE
I will start:
1.Pride N Greed- Available Night time 8-12 PST
Great idea! I’ll get them edited in soon.

There’s a problem with this. 1v1 in this game is not balanced at all. Two builds will rise above all others: Mesmer condi build, and d/d ele. These are the two best 1v1 builds in the game, and most builds don’t even come close to killing them.
Participation is entirely voluntary. If you think you are unable to beat these players you don’t have to participate. You can spec however, and I can assure you some excellent players will beat these professions.
I would try but I haven’t played builds good at 1 vs 1. I play support and roam that’s why this won’t work for me.
But How about Minion Necro vs. Phantasm Mesmer (no moa elite as it unsummons all Minions)
Then maybe also a spirit weapon guardian. Hehe, it’ll be 1 vs 1 but it’ll seem much more because of all the creatures.
Haha, well the first phase is all about getting practice and finding players you need to work towards beating.
How about also adding a rule:
The player first to capture the point(at a certain location) wins. Pretty much, it’ll force players to stand in the ring. Or if they run around too much to heal, the enemy will win because the enemy will cap.
I like this, and we may do a separate tournament with this and see what people like. I don’t want to set rules that make players feel obligated to spec certain ways.(stability traits etc) so we could just test the waters on it.
Elementalist Bunker vs. Necro or Engineer bunker
could be interesting.
Obviously want a long game. But if its a compilation of a bunch of short fights, try glass cannon vs. glass cannon
Back stab thief vs. 100 Blade war or the sort.
I’d like to see a bunker eng and necro go at it. I’d also like to see some new builds come to the tournament as well though.
I don’t think this is a bug, but perhaps people joining before you? As long as I refresh before I join I don’t have this problem. This is a common occurrence in any server browser.
Reserved for winners.

Hello everyone,
I am creating this thread in hopes to spark some friendly competition among my fellow pvpers. I am shooting for two goals here.
1) I am proposing a week(perhaps longer) long event of scheduled dueling. This will allow everyone to get their feet wet, and maybe spark some rivalry between some people. Duels will take place at the times set here in this thread. Wagers are encouraged to be placed, however not required. I recommend bringing friends to fill up server slots and to give you some momentum through encouragement.
I ask players to obtain some good footage during the week. I will handle editing should we accumulate enough for a couple good videos.
I ask that a generous player provide a teamspeak or vent server for large periods of dueling.
I also ask for players to try and Schedule duels in groups, so we can gather and watch.
Winners will be posted here, so please post or message me with the winners of each duel.
2) After the community has been dueling for a bit, I plan to arrange a tournament. The tournament will require an entry fee, and the 1,2, and 3 place winners will get a portion of the sum. The currency or items have yet to be determined.
Tournament rules will be discussed and agreed upon at a later date.
Should the turnout for this be large enough, I plan to keep records of winners in a manner that is publicly available.
We may do 2v2s and more if turnout is good.
All duels will take place in a chosen empty server, and filled if necessary.
Again, please schedule duels in this thread!
That small scale map is an excellent idea though. Maybe we’ll get that in the next expansion.
you can’t do what people did in wow because of the structure of this game.
There are no factions nor open world pvp (WvsW is instanced pvp don’t get wrong, i’d not even consider it pvp) so you can’t say let’s fight on this zone , i remember doing it on duskwood in wow and it was fun as hell battle finished when only one faction had people lurking between the trees.
PvP at the entrance of the dungeons, where a group of 5 coordinated guys could kill 40 pve specced guys.
You can’t do this here not even in world vs world because if you want to form a group of 50 it will take ages to enter and this is the worst thing about wvsw you have to fix this.
Gw2 needs a wvw type map but more focused on small scale pvp with attractive rewards to gather, badges for killing people, and even world bosses where guilds should bring a pvp squad to cover the pve guys while they kill it.
I’m not saying let’s do exactly what we did in WoW. Rather, let’s put forth the organizational effort we did then.
Somehow the Anet team have made some decisions that go against the flow of logic. Their game is very awesome, the betas looked very promising and it appeared that this game is about giving you the best in every possible MMO way. The devs have accomplished this to SOME extend, but some of the design just doesn’t make any sense.
I am just trying to understand this. I will present my case by giving you a couple of examples of my own experiences while participating in the Random Arenas.
Apparently hardly anyone is joining these maps anymore, it might be the timezone, it might be the fact that most players have probably dedicated their time to tPVP only, or people are just bored, I don’t know, but I am entering random arenas on my own, or with 1 or 2 more people very often.
This is, of course, presenting me with a couple of opportunities. One of these is to quit the map and just give up on doing arenas at that particular moment of time, while the other one is to try and conduct some 1v1 pvp, if it’s possible.
So far I’ve had the most fun in pvp while dueling. I am not trying to exaggerate here, doing consequent 1v1 fights has brought a ton of pleasure on my table. Everything comes together here – even the downed state makes perfect sense and can be a true changer of a duel’s outcome.
One of the nights I ended up in a map with 2 other people, of which 1 was a thief in my team and the other one was an elementalist from the opposing team. He explained that he didn’t want to do any duels with a thief because it didn’t make sense. I replied that he will never get any better if he doesn’t try, to which he responded: “But this guy is actually pretty good.”
Eventually the map changed and the ele left, leaving me (as an Ele) and the thief. We decided to do duels and it was great fun! We fought for an hour or so. Our duels very balanced most of the time, while some ended in seconds. Whenever I was writing something in the chat or didn’t pay attention – the thief would 1-2 shot me. But when we were both paying attention the duels were long and very intense. A few times we were so close to killing each other, that we would both go into downed state at the same time, escaping to a safe distance, healing ourselves up and then continuing our fight.
It was amazing and I’ve had several of these experiences. This can never happen in a team environment and I am just trying to understand how can ArenaNet refuse to integrate a Dueling option in our game? What’s with that, seriously? This is like walking by a bag of gold ingots and just passing it by, ’cause you are in a rush to go think of something to nerf.
I don’t get why this still isn’t in the game and I don’t even want to talk about the lack of GvG, it will just make everyone sad again.
So could someone from Anet be so kind as to answer my question:
Why don’t we have the amazing, awesome feature of dueling, which will only bring unbelievable fun and happiness to all the players of Guild Wars 2?
Anet is planning to implement them soon. However, some of us in the community are trying to get together and organize some competitions or just get together and have some duels soon. Keep an eye out here for a post.
Edit: confused dueling with another announcement. they won’t be yet.

Any have some ideas what we could use for “currency?” Im thinking maybe unid dyes or something?
If anyone is interested in arranging something PM me in game.
Wow, what an amazing thread. Thanks for starting it tOss!
It’s a great idea and one that represents a very different point of view. You guys can do a lot to push the current game, and I applaud you for making an effort.
But at the same time, some of this still falls on myself and other devs. We will continue to listen to your posts about balance. We will continue to push features forward that help you to enjoy the game (like custom arenas, matched tourneys, QP rankings, leaderboards, a way to spectate the game, etc).
I know it sucks that everything isn’t done right away, but just know that we’re still working on the features we’ve mentioned before.
Until you get custom arenas, you can definitely use the current PvP browser to set up 5on5 matches and settle disputes via 1on1 duels. We don’t want to tell you how to enjoy the game, and we commend you for using the current systems as you wait for future features to come online.
Thanks Jonathon. I hope you guys do great things with the game, and I’m confident you all are trying your best to give everyone a great experience. I appreciate the response.
Just hurry up with those custom servers. ;)
Thank god for this thread! Well done sir, and it’s refreshing to see someone with the right attitude and desire. I completely agree with what you’re saying. After all, it’s really, in the end, the community that ends up making a game desirable or not. No one wants to be party of a wining, kittening, sense of ridiculous entitlement community. This even reflects how well the dev’s work. It’s like being a customer service agent, if you work somewhere with lots of people that have the right attitude and take pride in their work while having fun, everyone does a better job and your customers are happier. I wish more of us could approach this thing with the right attitude like you OP, not only because will we then have more fun playing the game, but I’m sure the game will head places that we want much faster.
Now if we could just get people to stop yelling about how the sky is falling…. The game hasn’t even been out a year yet. Cool your kittening jets lol.
I appreciate the sentiment. <3
Please, direct guild mates etc to third thread. Get the word out so we can get this ball rolling.
This game has been pushed to it’s limit as far as the aspect of pvp. Everyone knows in order to be successful you are forced to run bunker classes and your everyday cookie cutter classes/builds to succeed. People played it and got bored and moved on.
I think comparing this game to vanilla wow was not accurate way to describe how pvp can be better in this game by doing what you stated.
1. This game is not faction based (Horde vs Alliance)
2. You are not forced to pvp in contested areas only in wvw.
3. WvW is a zerg fest and in no way balanced.
4. Spvp is conquest based so you cannot 1v1(unless you get into empty server and hope no one joins it.)The pvp community is almost non existent go to the mists and go look at how many people are in there.
I think the community hasn’t even made a real effort to push this game to it’s limit. The comparison was merely to exemplify the course of action that they took, I don’t see how it fails in that regard.
1. Factions are irrelevant in getting active communication throughout a playerbase.
2. Being “forced” to pvp is also irrelevant to the point. Forced PvP =/= player organized PvP.
3. What does the WvWvW balance have to do with this post?
4. I included the fact we may need “fillers.” However, in the case of larger 1v1 brackets these “fillers” would simply be participants waiting there turn. Or, in larger 2v2 or more matches “fillers” could double as cameras.
Well first and for most, this plan needs some kind of way to communicate. Like site, board or facebook page. Someone with skills in programming sites would be an asset.
True, I think a facebook page and these boards would be the best thing for now. I have some java experience but none in html 5. So a site design would be tough. If we got enough people communicating however, we may be able to get sites like gw2guru involved.
Glad to see some positive comments here. Please, offer any ideas that come to mind.
I don’t think it should be forced upon the players to find clever ways to try to have fun in PvP. That’s mostly fault with the developers.
And that’s why you fail. Nothing is being forced upon anyone. If you want to have fun in sPvP and that’s not happening utilizing the developer provided content, rather than incessantly whining day in and day out, wouldn’t it make more sense to try organize something to have fun? Isn’t that what this is all about?
If someone you live with turned on the TV in the room then left, and you don’t like the show that’s on, doesn’t it make more sense to go over and turn it off/change the channel instead of screaming at the top of your lungs how you don’t like what’s playing?
Better said than I was going to post.
Fire #1 also burns.
Earth #1 also bleeds.
Water skills often have lame damage. It’s part of the concept.
Air #1 is just really, really stupid, especially as it’s bugged.
You really don’t like Air #1? It’s a great damage filler between the dragon’s tooth/phoenix→… combo.
I only need a ladder, observ would be nice but i honostly just need a ladder.
This post is to encourage us to do other things while we wait for an alternative ladder. However, if you want to climb a ladder now, you could get a team together and go for some QP right?
I think that the fire #1 skill is certainly lack luster. However the air #1 skill is great, imo. It does decent damage while you can cast the #2 and the blind when you need it.
Ah, and “best of” profession fights would be great.
I am making this thread to open up some discussion about what I believe to be an issue in regards to the long term success of Guild Wars 2. I find that the community(even other communities now) is increasingly relying on the developer to implement structure or activities with which to compete, or to hold their attention. I believe that this is the wrong way to look at a game that we, the community, enjoy and want to succeed in the long run. Note however, this is not to say that the developer should never implement new things, or improve upon things they have, but for the community to be less reliant, overall, on what Anet does.
To draw a comparison, let’s look at WoW’s early PvP community. (considered by some the best time for PvP in the game)The community was, before the implementation of battlegrounds and areas, largely self supporting. Forums were a place to arrange large battles, settle disputes between guilds, or between people. Tournaments were arranged, 1v1 and even larger groups of people in particular zones would arrange to fight. There were games played on the forums, like tagging certain players to find and kill. The point being, that the community took the initiative.
Now, I understand that Anet has thrown the Esport goal out there. But, I think it’s up to us to push this game forward so that it can achieve it’s full potential. In my opinion, I believe that a game’s community is the main drive behind any online games success. This community can make this game great even if they never put in arenas, or dedicated servers.(which they already stated they would, and will also help the community) Also, things that the community do can help Anet decide what to implement, and when.
Finally, I’ll list some things we can do, as a community, to keep the life pumping until Anet adds more features; even things we can do afterwards.
-Create our own match-ups and duels. Their are empty servers that can be utilized as vehicles for small skirmishes or duels, like 1v1 up to 4v4. (Fighters joining, then extras to prevent disruptive players)
-Recording match ups made.
-Tie WvWvW conflicts into sPvP. Known commanders dueling, or things of that nature.
-Guilds can host events for small-scale GvG activities.
I hope to see some more ideas here in this thread as well.
I think it’s in the right place. Imagine if a casual had to win 100 tournament matches to complete it? He wouldn’t even bother trying.
3 tourney matches a day is too much?
As a father, full time college student and employee, I sometimes don’t even get to play for days at a time. I’m not saying it’s bad you can, nor advocating for easier achievements. However, different people have different schedules and priorities and you should understand this.
Its funny… people think “the forum community” is the vocal minority.
When you have a forum full of angry and upset and frustration…. its not a minority anymore.
Hope Anet makes a genuine heartfelt post about all the problems and dislike people have with not just the patch… but the game and its direction in general.
I remember reading several comments identical time this during Diablo 3’s launch. Diablo 3 still has a forum if whiners, But when you play public games you find a lot of happy players. Judging The forums as the entire playerbase’s opinions are about the equivalent of taking the exit polls during the mid-term senate election in a small town and projecting that to the entire populations congressional satisfaction rate.
That is, taking an opinion from a small group of a population(aka a minority) about specific topics and applying it in a broad manner, which is not reliable. Even if the majority of forum goers are leaning one way, we are still the minority. We are a small set of a very large population.
I think the op makes a point about the game having two paths, however the paths he explains doesn’t strike me as some sort of sudden revelation, but rather as a pretty common set of circumstances for any developer trying to win over a fan base.
(edited by tOss.9024)
I think a water build could be. I considered this awhile back but have yet to test it. Ill throw something together tonight and post results.
I don’t understand. Just use eruption for your area healing when needed. Yes, it is a longer cool down, but not unbearable. Suck it up and figure out a way. This community is so pitiful sometimes. They fixed bugs, and showed that they are working towards opening more doors for us. (conjured weapons for example) lets act like gamers instead of kids.
@tOss, with even an immobilize, you would need a perfect delayed stomp (assuming your immobilize lasts for more than 3 seconds), in an extremely hectic teamfight it would be hard to get the stomp off.
It is much more troublesome to re locate a mesmer or a thief if the teleport/delay misses or is on CD than to sit and wait for a helpless ele to fall back under your feet. We aren’t even a threat on the ground as opposed to many other classes.
Just to throw this in there, you can put immobilize on an ele and it will solve the movement problem. I agree that health should not reset though.
In Forest of Niflhel, the npc’s sometimes show (new string) rather than the object calling the actual name assigned to his/her string.
I’m confused. Where does it call explorer a PvE achievement. Is it labeled that way somewhere I’m overlooking?
Anet said they will be looking at burst for the next patch guys. Lets see how it goes before posting the same thread we’ve seen so many times already.
