With Guild Wars 2, I can take my lvl 2 character into sPvP and there is absolutely no difference between me and that other guy. If I win, it is because I am better than him. Not because he was able to spend x amount of time in game and have better stats than me.

It’s not all like that at the moment though, there’s only four maps with one game mode at the moment, and unless you like playing the same thing over and over and over and over again with no variation what so ever, then fair play to you!

Also depends what character you are in PVP at the moment, it’s just not balanced. I for one when playing a Elementalist in the past have a much harder time to do anything, yet playing a Thief, not only do I do more damage than the Elementalist, you can actually quite literally just repeatedly press the number 2 button to do the heartseeker move and do just as well! No need to tell me to learn to play, i’ve tried every character, and for the time and effort along with the amount of damage you can achieve with them, there are others which are just better than others. Hence why the majority of people I saw were Warriors or Thieves.

Bro LoL has basically 1 map and has limitless replay value. The problem is that 8v8’s SUCK and are major zerg fests. You get the most points if you just stick with the zerg… why can’t we play 5v5 outside of tournies??

The cash shop gives them enough to keep the servers online, and encourages the devs to make patch notes, but nothing more imo, look at GW1, the cash shop did just that.

Also in GW1 the devs released fixes and patches like they do now in b/w expansions, but there were no really major content releases they did for free. Basically all the content releases they did were things that should have been at launch, but didn’t get time to finish, and didn’t need to finish them since they were endgame zones. These weren’t “extra” things that were added for free, but rather integral parts of the game. Like imagine GW1 without FoW, lol.

Well judging by the vast array of forums posts from people sharing my same opinion, and myself and other friends who I played this game with who have also stopped playing now, seems to suggest that there’s not much longetivity in this game.

If it is supposed to be a PVP game, it feels as though they didn’t devote anywhere near enough time to make it playable and/or enjoyable.

They seemed to POUR all their dev dollars into PvE while barely putting any in PvP, which doesn’t surprise me too much, a lot of mmo dev’s don’t really focus on their endgame features too much at launch, and make sure everything else is shiny.

I don’t play the game anymore, it’s a simple as that really! Nothing more to say apart from your friend is absolutely right, and more!

No one plays Halo’s campaign anymore, that’s fine. The endgame to B2P games is PvP!!!! We knew this from the beginning, don’t buy into GW2’s marketing team that this is a PvE game, its a PvE game if your a casual player.

We pay them no sub fee so they have no incentive to make PvE have any sort of longevity in b/w expansions. How would it make sense for them to update their game like a P2P mmo with a B2P price tag?

I don’t understand your comment, sorry! So you’re saying this is a PVP game?

PVP was going to be what I was going to do as “end game content” if you will. However what PVP?
Spvp is unbalanced, there’s only four maps and one game mode, and no incentive to play it at all really. It’s fun for about 5 minutes, after that, there’s just no reason why you’d play it.
WvW, sure, the concept is great! However, queue times for it are quite frankly pathetic, leading to hours upon hours of waiting time, ofcourse if you get in at all! It’s just not worth the wait when you can pick up other games and play immediately and just generally have fun. With this one it’s more like log in, shout out in map chat to attempt getting a group for something, or sit there like a lemon trying/waiting to play WvW.

Whether the PvP is good or not is subjective, but the game is structured to facilitate a PvP endgame. That, or the game simply has no endgame, and not in a good sense.

I agree with most of what you are saying, but a cosmetic treadmill will see a lot of complaints, b/c some ppl want only a certain look, and if you transmute over a high tier cosmetic armor peice, its like all that work was for nothing.

What I would suggest is that there’s a cosmetic treadmill, but you aren’t stuck with that armor, you can transmute over it, but each tier of cosmetic armor will glow a certain color/amount/with certain decals/etc. regardless of what you transmute it with.

Also, yeah I’m like why did they bother with downleveling if you’re forced to play the game in one direction?

The rewards for doing down-leveled content should be higher, and downleveling much more harsher, imo as a tradeoff.

My Staff Ele doesn’t get a lot of badges in WvW either. The system is broken in some way.

Hmm really? Healing rain and that healing water spout only take a second to put down and have decently long cooldowns, and all the other debuffs on your water staff do damage I think. Is it because you can’t get to the bodies before they disappear or something?

I have more AoEs than that and I use them all and I do damage and probably tag a lot of people. That doesn’t mean I’ll get anything for it. I’m not doing a lot of single target damage to anyone. I’m throwing down a lot of CC, a lot of combo fields, some AoE damage in fire when I’m not using the other stuff, and heals when needed. I do a lot for my team. But it doesn’t reward me.

For most targets, I think you need to hit them 3 or more times to tag them.

Dusk pretty much nailed it…Moreover this game had a great launch compared to other games (Been on several of them…).Enjoy the game guys and enjoy it to way it was built, its different either its pvp or pve. HF!

lol this game does have good endgame content FOR LAUNCH, but dusk has NO idea what he’s talking about. A themepark game needs progression for PvE to have any sort of longevity, b/c there’s only a set amount of content that players can beat faster than the devs can make.

Without progression, why would people play things they’ve already played before? If you want no endgame, than this game will be like a single player game, which would be a bold thing to do for an mmo, and I guess makes sense for a B2P game, they want you to stop playing to ease up on their servers, and they have no incentive to have you keep playing since you aren’t paying them for new content.

The game definitely need to reward combat healing/buffing more imo. I don’t feel the Guardian is useless at range though

The scepter is actually a decent ranged weapon imo, although the slowness of the bolts and lag can be an issue (you fire loads of bolts and they all hit ages in 1 big lump of damage or they hit after the target is already dead). You have a 1200 range attack with the torch and one with the focus

The staff is something you need to be versatile with. You can put the force field behind an enemy and immediately drop down your symbol on whoever you catch. The 600 range auto attack tags targets very well, and even hits through gates. The bolt is a nice medium ranged damage attack, but it can be buggy and unreliable as it gets stuck in “heal” mode and won’t go to cooldown until you press it again, forcing you to wait 10+ seconds to use it again. Empower would be nice as a channelled damage attack (so you can end it early for some damage in a small area, after the 2 second or so)

The only thing that will ever hit on the scepter is its 2, its 1 is almost for like close ranged combat, at 1200 range, it won’t hit anything other than targets that stand still.

This is part of the problem, but the bigger part is that there simply isn’t enough interesting and fresh PvE content for people who are at cap now.

But to expect that there would be in any newly-released game is totally unrealistic. Games can’t be designed around people who get to cap in two weeks.

The cap isn’t that hard to reach..

bc it seems their entire game was made with the thought process that everyone will be doing some damage, which is why a lot of support moves have damage tacked on to them randomly. Though there are exceptions to this, and generally doing active support moves make you lose out on xp and drops, like Guardian’s staff 4.

And also, it takes a lot of work to remake the loot system, instead they could just fix this, as its where their loot system’s problems are most glaring.

There is no opportunity for skilled players to stand out and above those that are not.

What? this makes no sense, if everyone has same level gear then the skilled players shine, as skill is all that matters.
Winning a fight because you out stat another player destroys the concept of skill based PVP, and in a PVE enviroment, out stating another player therefore doing more DPS in no way makes you a better player.

Making PvP only contain cosmetic upgrades is fine. In PvE it gets old fast when there is no sense of progression. I’m not talking about making it huge upgrades and stuff like in WoW but a sense of progression is needed to keep people interested, this isn’t a sandbox game.

THIS, big time! Ppl burn through content much faster than devs can make it. And this isn’t a sandbox game, so all the content you will experience in PvE is made by the devs, thus a sense of progression is needed to keep people playing. And if you don’t want to keep people playing after the content has run out, then thats fine, and that means the game literally has no endgame. And not in a good way.

Arenanet should tell us the truth ,this game will be a Esport and they dont care about pve.

This is obvious, they have to put in a lot of time and effort to make pve content, pvp content is the gift that keeps on giving. This is a B2P game, remember. Pve is just the “campaign” mode, you don’t see Starcraft 2 update thier campaign regularly and they have the same business model as GW2. There is no way GW2 would be profitable if they regularly updated their PvE content since no one pays sub fees.

Once you have an understanding of mesmer, you can face roll all the noobs with it b/c its very hard for ppl who don’t know how the mesmer works to figure out which mesmer is the real one, especially if you just stand still and press 1, and they can get confused very easily.

Theives would be a better bet though, they dominate and freak new players out as well but are easier than mesmers to learn.

Also ranger is by far the easiest class to play mediocrely, maybe you aren’t being challenged enough with how face roll easy your class is and thus aren’t learning anything about the game, in which case you should switch to another harder to play class just to better your skill. If you’re bad at strategically killing your enemies, get a mesmer to learn this skill. If you’re bad at the mechanical parts of the game, get a warrior to learn things like positioning/los/dodging at the perfect time/etc.

Hehe, “ignorance”… lol, I’m sry but you don’t take feedback that is contrary to your points well… but it’s certainly not ignorance.

The definition of deceive does not imply duration — you inserted that yourself.

Why don’t you just try clones in PvP and WvW and see how often your foes are deceived — sometimes it will happen, sometimes it will not. The bottom line is that it will happen.

You can attribute that to player ability, or not — doesn’t matter.

I’m sure a lot of ppl will be confused by them. Especially in WvW where it is legitly impossible to keep track of every mesmer and his clones. But in sPvP, ppl will be confused by the mesmer’s clones due to lack of skill and/or understanding of the mesmer’s moves. What purpose do the clones looking identical to the caster serve if it increases the mesmer’s incomprehensibility to enemies while not adding any real depth? Any real counter play?

Some games make things arcane on purpose b/c that’s the allure to them. But GW2, like what most games should be like, is going for making things very intuitive and easy to understand. This flies completely against that ideal. I was trying to think of an example of complexity without depth, but the one already in game is too perfect:

It would be like if the mesmer had a move that teleported himself a short distance backwards and left a clone of himself in place. There is no other action in the game that resembles this move, so a player with knowledge of the mesmer will instantly recognize that the mesmer in front is a clone. So that brings up the question, why bother making a clone that resembles the mesmer so closely? Why not color it some other color? What purpose could this possibly serve other than creating noob traps?

A lot of you are making me kind of mad w/ ur ignorance. I think the problem is many of yall don’t know what deceiving means. According to thefreedictionary.com, deceiving- To cause to believe what is not true; mislead.

Making a player take .3 extra seconds to figure out where his target due to human reaction time is not deception, its a hindrance. A small one at that. Its just giving the enemy player more to micro. Clones are still useful in high level play, but not generally for deceit. Which is fine, its just a wonder why the devs made clones be deceitful for low level play.

Not only did it give us an out on the Sword’s 2, but it gave us an offensive purpose in WvW, wheras currently we are shoe-horned into being support-bots.

Also an aside, wouldn’t it be cool if they didn’t buff the Theives shortbow 2, and kept their main use to be infiltration like the Guardian? I think DAoC did this to all the melee classes, b/c they sucked so bad in Realm v Realm, they allowed them to breach walls to give them a purpose.

So?

It still takes a half second to a second to ID the correct Mesmer.

Free 1s Invulnerability. GG no re.

Good god, are all of you so thick? I’m stating something about the overall design of the mesmer. I have no say AT ALL on whether or not they are balanced or not, and never even alluded to saying ANYTHING on the subject.

Clones are still useful in higher level play for that half a second invulnerability, target loss, and fear of a shatter, I won’t contest that.

Why I find the Mesmer badly designed

in Mesmer

the uprising.6317

Mesmer is by no means a perfect class, there are definitely a lot of things that could use work. But to say clones fail in their task of deceiving other players is ridiculous.

Maybe I’m just a terrible player, but when I walk into a room and see four enemy mesmers…it’s pretty freaking confusing. Yes, I can tell who the real mesmer is in a few seconds, but those are a few seconds where I was completely useless, and I still have the challenge of targeting the mesmer and not his clones with tab or a mouse click which can be daunting in and of itself. And in those few seconds, the mesmer may have very well shattered his existing clones, and remade a few to generate even more confusion.

So I’m not really sure what the clone complainers want. Do you want clones to be literally indistinguishable for the mesmer? That would be ridiculously OP, and it would turn a skill-based mechanic (clone recognition) into a completely random mechanic (hope you hit the mesmer).

Just because a skilled player can counter something does not mean it’s “bad design.” On the contrary, I would call that GOOD design.

I mean, just look at the warrior’s frenzy + one hundred blades. It does TONS of damage, and can nearly down someone in one burst. BUT it’s pretty easy to counter. All a mesmer would have to do is either the F4 shatter (which can even be done stunned), blurred frenzy, or blink away, and one hundred blades does nothing. And really, if you see a warrior charge at you with a greatsword, you should know what’s coming.

Does this make that warrior combo useless or bad design? NO! It’s STILL super powerful, it’s just possible to counter. Same kind of thing with clones.

Again it only confuses noobs, b/c in higher tier matches you, or one of your allies will always keep track of which mesmer is the real mesmer because they are basically always on your GUI. If the mesmer you’re tracking suddenly becomes 3 mesmers in a particular pattern, guess what happened? Mirror Image.

I’m a little confused by these threads when they get posted over and over and over. Are you saying that there SHOULDN’T be a way to distinguish clones from the mesmer if they’re just attacking? How could that ever be balanced?

Either there blatantly shouldn’t like in Decoy or Illusionary leap, which I thought what the class was going for initially, or it should be BLATANTLY obvious which Mesmer is the real mesmer. There is literally no point in making the clones from moves that are not Decoy and Illusionary Leap to imitate the looks of the mesmer.

Why I find the Mesmer badly designed

in Mesmer

Posted by: the uprising.6317

the uprising.6317

How the mesmer was made in GW2 is almost a textbook example of what NOT to do in designing, and the mistakes made on this class are typically seen in newbie companies, but I didn’t expect it from an industry veteran like Anet which seemed to have at least SOME willingness to learn from their design missteps in GW1.

The Mesmer is one of the most complicated classes, but that complexity doesn’t translate into depth. Its just complexity for the sake of complexity. Which not only runs counter to the design goal of making combat intuitive, but also runs against the goal of not creating noob traps.

The main problem is with clones, in that the huge majority of the time, there is no deception involved. If your enemy understands the mechanics of the mesmer, you can never use mirror image to fool your enemy into thinking you are one of the clones. Mirror image is used in such matchups simply to provide you with 2 shatters/diversions. But if that’s the case, why are they clones of you, why don’t they just look like another form of phantasms? What purpose could them being clones have other than to confuse noobs who don’t know how the Mesmer works?

Heck the only skills the Mesmer has that actually count as deception are Illusionary Leap and Decoy. Both skills imitate another action PRECISELY not allowing the enemy to know which action you have chosen, at least until one of the clones attacks them. You setting a decoy and running away looks identical to you just standing there casting 1. Skills like Phase Retreat and Mirror Image, however, don’t have an analogue so if you know all the skills of the Mesmer, you’ll know that if a Mesmer uses Phase Retreat, the Mesmer in the back is the real one, 100% of the time.

EDIT: I’m not saying Mesmer is “weak”. I’m saying they should have skills that deceive EVERYONE and skills that blatantly deceive NO ONE. Them having tons of skills that only deceive noobs is just bad design.

Also, to the people saying you don’t enjoy grinding if you don’t like the low rewards currently present, no one enjoys ridiculous grinds, they want the grind to be paced correctly, there is an art to making grind enjoyable, and atm its far too unrewarding.

You know there’s a problem when there’s more grind to get a dungeon armor in GW2 than in WoW.

WoW is totally different in that it is organized around endless gear progression in tiers. That isn’t the case here. These sets aren’t the equivalent of “dungeon armor” — they are the prestige armor sets in the game in terms of appearance. Acquiring a set with the same stats is very easy, doesn’t require a grind, and can easily be crafted or simply purchased on the TP. It’s a different setup from WoW entirely.

Actually getting exotic gear requires quite a bit of grind. Heck getting to lvl 80 requires 80+ hours of “grind”. Grind aint goin away as its in the game AT LAUNCH. Expect more.

Which brings up a good point that was brought up in the press beta, but all the fanboys were like “naaaah, that won’t happen”. Its that none of the content requires you to socialize with your allies. Ppl come together to do a DE, and just as quickly disperse, not a single word said to each other, the content doesn’t promote people coming together and bonding. DE’s and stuff would be fine if they didn’t flat out replace normal questing. Heck, b/c of how easy kitten is you don’t even have to cooperate with your allies! Just 1, 1, 1 your way to victory.

Inb4 I get buried by fanboys and/or this post gets removed by mods lolol

I Wish Rewards Scaled to Level

Even just a moderate amount. Atm, the only thing in the entire game that KINDOF scales to your level is events, which seems lame since you are downscaled to the area, why aren’t rewards upscaled a bit due to the extra XP and silver requirements at higher levels? Its basically not worth doing AC if you are past lvl 30 other than for the story b/c you would be getting lower rewards for doing AC than if you were doing other random stuff outside of the dungeon. Not to mention the content outside AC is infinitely easier. Heck you might even lose silver doing AC as a high level char with the repair costs and costs to waypoint travel there.

Greatsword is such a lame, 1 dimensional weapon, that’s far too offensive focused for a melee weapon. And thus I can see how a lot of people go for it.

You guys… fantasy, and creativity in general, needs boundaries or it becomes chaos. The guardian is a MAGIC WEILDING KNIGHT. This is the design goal with the guardian and has been since their reveal. See all the virtues, spirit weapons, aoe fields, etc. that’s all magic. There is nothing in the guardian that goes against their original design goal. As someone who wields a spear, I see no problem with the guardian wielding a bow especially since its one of the spirit weapons.

Starting to think I'm not good enough to play this game.

Play a ranger, thank me later. You will have a very difficult time messing up with the ranger. A high skillfloor low skill cap class, very straightforward, tab12345 and f2 sometimes, and ur good. I say warrior is harder class overall, but will be easier to play if you are good at spacing, if you aren’t, sure they have a lot of passive health, but they are the least tab targeting reliant classes.

Guardian is a big no-no if you are a low skill player, they are all active defense, control, and active support.

80 Guardian here and the class is fine in both PVE/PVP/WvW.

Learn to strafe/dodge and always be moving.

The only change that would be okay on Sceptor is if they added a combo to it. It feels a bit “boring”, but I wouldn’t say its underpowered. You can close gaps by using util skills, MOVING, and swapping weapons. Check your runes too. Hydromancy works wonders.

LOL, if you’re enemies learn the same advice you’re giving us, of “strafing”, you’ll notice the scepter is useless at longer ranges.

Wish we had a better ranged option than Scepter/Focus. Until they balance some of the pve content, its 100x easier just to range every thing in the explorable no need to think at all, especially when you can have powerful tools like Blind from range lol…

Scepter/staff is fine for PvE. You’ll not longer range weapons suffer in pve b/c of the stupid mob reset if they get kited too far. Mid range is king, especially in dungeons where there’s no where to kite too. Scepter is also good for bosses and DE’s b/c bosses don’t dodge.

Humans however, move out of the way of danger, making the scepter essentially a mid range weapon. A problem b/c guardian is the only class with ZERO long ranged weapons. And to yall saying, “well some classes don’t have true melee options”, who cares, in the current state of balance, ranged is king in all modes except sPvP.

For you ppl who are saying you just support in WvW, support gets no drops or xp in WvW. Also, are you happy the guardian is by far the least versatile class in WvW?

Wth, you’re getting way better performance than my quad core 1.6 i7 and mobility 5730… I hope Anet goes back to optimizing once they are done finishing sorting out the hacked accounts.

Is the game being CPU Bound something they will optimize?

MMOs are always demanding on the CPU.
Your 1.6ghz i7 is terrible by the way. First, it’s a laptop CPU. Second, it’s only 1.7 ghz.

It was better than the recommended specs, so you have terrible judgement. And there was a person here with a duel core i7 who was getting better frames than me.

EDIT: Also none of y’all’s suggestions worked for me sadly

Plz provide a link to the drivers.

I’m also going to try running under windows 8 to see if that makes any difference… (as soon as my backup completes)

You might want to read the forum posts the unofficial driver is listed on with win 8, since some ppl were having problems running it with win 8 64-bit, apparently its fixed by turning off Driver Signature Enforcement, but I’m not 100% sure.
