1c undercutting is destroying competition

whiran.1473

Please give me a more appropriate title and I’ll edit my original post. (I of course expect an insulting interpretation since it takes a certain character to critique a sentence literally, without regarding context.)

You could go with something like, “Thoughts about 1c undercutting” or “Let’s discuss 1c undercutting and how it effects the market.”

I read your first post. Your very first sentence is:

A bold claim, but hear me out.

I addressed your claim with a question to point out a historical data set – that competition still exists and if undercutting was destroying competition then there would be less competition today per capita than there was at release. Since that does not appear to be the case then your statement is rebutted.

Legendary Twilight - 9500g on TP

Why would you be upset that legendary weapons could be put on the market?

Because eveyr single part of them is Account Bound? And we already have items that are both Account bound and Soulbound on use?

But that does not explain why someone would be upset by this?

Nor is every single part of them account bound. There are various elements of a legendary that are not account bound although, yes, there are some.

So the question remains, why would someone be upset or mad that the final legendary could be sold?

and more importantly, why are they even sellable? i mean, even if they weren’t, they were never legendary to begin with (unless you farm all the mats yourself). but this way, it’s just pure bullkitten.

What’s the problem?

Why would you be upset that legendary weapons could be put on the market?

OP, is there competition in Guild Wars 2’s economy?

Since you appear to be complaining about it then I can guess that the answer is, “Yes” which would mean that 1 copper undercutting hasn’t destroyed competition to date.

Why would that suddenly change?

Thanks

Umm… you can. You take your gold and you buy gems. You use the gems to buy the upgrade.

That’s exactly what you are suggesting.

If you feel the gold price is too high then you can purchase gems directly.

To the OP: You realize that while you complain about how few gems you get for gold there are people who are complaining about how little gold they get for gems.

If demand for an item rises quickly (or the supply changes quickly which results in a rapid price increase) then the supply side will adjust as well but there is a lag time before people realize it.

Basically, if farmable items rise in price then people will notice it and start farming these items. This will cause the prices to drop and stabilize but it takes awhile before enough people realize that it becomes worth their while to farm.

I wouldn’t want ArenaNet to step in since the market should be as player driven as possible. Although, in Guild Wars 2 since there isn’t a constant destruction of gear, I’m not sure what the economic engine will be in the long term.

I’m thinking gold will just build up in the system unless I’m missing something.

Anyway, in this situation, just wait a few days and prices will stabilize.

Who are these people?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: whiran.1473

whiran.1473

Some people just want to sell stuff quickly and don’t think that the current price represents a ‘fair’ price for an item. So, they will list the item at what they think is a fair price.

If they undercut your sales by too much buy them up and relist them. Or, if the market solidifies around that new price then deal with it. That’s the new price for the item (and suggests that the original price had some fluff in it so count yourself lucky for making that extra profit while people were buying it.)

There are all kinds of reasons why people undercut by a large amount. Trying to blame or even suggesting that it is ArenaNet is… well… yeah.

Legendaries unreachable, regardless of effort

in Black Lion Trading Co

whiran.1473

There is nothing in a Legendary that -needs- the use of the Trading Post.

One can obtain a legendary by farming for it.

The use of the trading post is to trade time spent doing one thing for not having to spend time doing another thing.

A lot of people buy their precursor weapon because they don’t want to spend the time, energy, or effort creating their own. But, they could have. Instead, they spend the amount of gold that they perceive as equating the value of the item.

If prices are going up on the Trading Post across the board then it doesn’t change the amount of time in needed for a legendary. If one aspect of a legendary is rising faster in price than another then focus on that one aspect and use it to buy up the cheaper elements.

If ArenaNet “nerfs” the drop rate of X but leaves Y as it is, then farm Y to buy up X. Or, since X’s price will rise, farm X and buy up Y – depending how the prices come out in the end.

The price rose by nearly 30% in two hours, reaching an all time high just to plummet by 40% afterwards.
Obviously a lot of gold has changed owner during that time, and it’s not a far cry to assume the market was manipulated with.

I looked at the spike. I agree with the implication that a lot of gems were bought or ArenaNet had a quirk in the system.

What I don’t get is how that leads you to market manipulation. To what end? Explain the underlying logic you have that makes the leap from an accurate observation to a belief that there is gem purchasing speculation of some sort.

If you could lay out how you connected the dots and could postulate as to the desired results of any speculator I would appreciate that.

I think the spike earlier today shows that there are people speculating on Gems artificially driving the price up.

It would be probably a good idea to limit the amount of Gems a player can buy for Gold to ~1000-2000 Gems per month.

For the average player nothing much would change and people who want to buy more than the limit can still buy them from ANet.

Why do you think that the “spike earlier today” shows people speculating on gems?

Could you explain your reasoning please?

Shadowlancer, you make an excellent point. We need -more- Asuran events. There have been events that did not revolve entirely around Asura and that is a problem.

Asura are the best race. They are superior to all other races. ArenaNet needs to portray their continual conquest of the world and the lesser races in each and every event.

Of course there is a giant flying golem – this only makes sense. I am surprised that there aren’t little mini-golems that fly in formation around the larger golem to make toy delivery more efficient.

Should any of these golems (or toys!) explode then that is okay since it is the true way of science. If one or two of the lesser cities happens to burn down, blow up, melt, collapse, or find itself in another dimension, then the Asura have improved the world for the greater (their own) good.

I am glad you are on board with the Asuran destiny.

“Bones” or lurve don’t need to alter root elements of design. It doesn’t take new maps or skills or weapons or character classes to placate the WvW community. While some might argue the opposite, I believe even small, token lurve is better than no lurve at all.

I agree. All it would really take for WvWvW players to be heartened would be a vision coming from ArenaNet – not even stuff in the game just the vision of what they are planning on doing with WvWvW… if anything.

I really want to know what ArenaNet is planning for WvWvW.

One thing that we know from all the MMOs out there – those that were successful and those that have faded – it is the player interactions that keep people around and interested.

We play MMOs because we want to play with other players. When the MMO impedes the grouping element of the game then people start leaving quickly.

If you talk to people who still play WoW the most common response to the question Why is because their friends are playing. WoW has that critical mass to keep it going and Blizzard is really good at adding new content that groups of people get to tackle together.

WvWvW is the best thing, in my opinion, going for Guildwars 2’s longevity – it provides a constantly changing environment where players get to interact with other players and work together. The challenge facing WvWvW is that people don’t feel that their individual contributions and group contributions matter – mostly due to how points are calculated.

The amount of people who have become frustrated with WvWvW from ‘night capping’ of control points speaks volumes to a design decision that wasn’t given a huge amount of thought. Points may be ‘useless’ in the grand scheme of things but as players we see points and we see a gauge that reflects how well our side is doing.

Anyway, I think WvWvW can be the best element of GW2 in terms of it moving forward. I think WvWvW is far more beneficial to retaining players than any other element of the game and I think that they can monetize off of WvWvW better than sPvP. But, will ArenaNet see it that way? I don’t think so… at least they haven’t yet.

They’ve allowed a ton of players to quit the game who would have stuck around if WvWvW’s point system had only been a little bit different. That one change… ahh, the impact of a little number is amazing.

The other truly successful MMO in my view is EVE Online – that’s an MMO that has managed, for the most part, to continually grow (except for one disastrous expansion where they introduced some variant of real-money purchases that exploded in their face) and that growth is almost all dependent on PvP. Even though there are a lot of players in EVE that do -not- PvP the initial attraction of the game environment is that players can achieve almost anything in that game. But, that’s a different game entirely

I want to see GW2 step up to the plate and lay out a vision for WvWvW so I can decide if I should just leave this game entirely. As it is I keep coming back to the site to check ever so hopefully that there is something here as an update… but each time.. more time passes between spikes of interest… But, hey, I’m just one player

Asura: Total War

. Asura are almost always insulting the intelligence of others. Well this might be accepted in their culture it isnt in the cultures of other races. Insulting a Charr or Norn would most likely end in a punch in the face.

There are a couple of points to make in regards to this. The first is to question the underlying assumption of pointing out the lack of intelligence of the lesser races as an insult as opposed to a valid observation.

Is a valid observation truly an insult?

The second point that comes to mind is that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent which proves the assertion of a lack of intelligence. Thus proving that any Asura making such a valid observation is correct in their observation.

However I can turn that argument around easily:
Charr = giant lion
Asura = small child
Giant lion > small child
Therefore, Asura would be eaten.

If this were true then in any environment where lions and people lived in close proximity there would be no children. But, this is not the case. So, given that, even with your faulty example, the Asura would win the war.

There is much more that is incorrect with the comparisons made (charr are not giant lions in any reality or fantasy nor are Asura small children) that it would take far too long to list.

For the sake of brevity I will leave a final rebuttal written from an Asuran point of view:

You are dumb.

It still boggles my mind why they didn’t have hundreds of armor and weapon models in WvW already, putting achievements into the game for getting each set. It’s a grind, but you’re already grinding for tokens anyway, so why not give us tons of things to strive for while we’re doing it? It certainly would motivate people no matter what the score is rather than deflate the populations in the maps once one team takes the ball and runs everybody else over with it.

Same.

It also boggles my mind that they didn’t tie their point system into proportional representation of the populations involved. If a side is outnumbered 2:1 then they should get, at least, twice the points for what they hold versus the opposing team (with some baseline values to guard against manipulation). But, whatever, it is what it is

Kalan, I would suggest asking the following questions any time someone claims to get hundreds of badges per day in WvWvW: What class do you play? AND How long do you play for?

There are other factors involved in badge drops as well such as what activities did you participate in?

A good way that I found for getting badges to drop is to man siege equipment and kill the enemy.

Good luck with it!

Gem Influence

Point being the gold to gem ratio is constantly being influenced to rise. These factors insure that gold into gem prices will price out the majority of the player base, thus influencing the method of obtaining gems. Considering the only check in place to balance the trade ratio is gems into gold trading, and it is lopsidedly out weighed, there is no reason for prices to ever stabilize.

Can you prove this please or provide some reasoning to it?

How does this insure that gold into gem prices will price out the majority of the player base? I’m not quite following why you suggest this and would like to.

What exactly is the basis for this claim?

I am going to predict that the response to this question will be like most (if not all) the other responses from people who make claims that are similar: you need to prove that it isn’t happening!

Of course, that ignores the point that since they are making the claim they need to back it up and if they are unable to do so then they are disproving their own assertion. But, since this is the internet, that doesn’t seem to matter.

People make all kinds of wild claims that they believe are self-evident and feel that they are correct – otherwise, they wouldn’t be making these claims let alone publishing them publicly. The difficulty for them happens when other people who are interested in what they are suggesting ask them to back up their claim with proof.

Unfortunately, all too often, these feelings are just feelings so the response to the request for proof is an emotional and defensive posting that doesn’t have any of the requested proof. In doing so they fail to prove that their feeling was correct which, in turns, leaves the impression (whether rightly or wrongly) that they were actually wrong which then calls into question -everything- that they post about.

After all, if someone is wrong about one thing then what are the chances that they are wrong about other stuff that they also make strong claims about?

I hope the people who are making these claims can back them up since I am curious as well.

There is clearly an alliance between servers.

I mean, it only makes sense right?

Every single individual player who runs around in a zerg and is focused solely on the next available objective is, in reality, allied to the other team.

Players on FA should join the alliance. Then it can be a three-way alliance.

Remember to get everyone on FA to agree to the alliance first. That’s probably what the other servers did. Because, you know, an alliance between servers indicates that the servers have an overall political leadership who can make decisions for the server and have the majority of the server follow those decisions.

Come on FA, catch up! All the other servers are unified entities with a single government that all the players agree to follow….

Note: There may have been sarcasm involved in this post.

I’ve, basically, stopped playing and I’m from TC.

My experience on TC was a great one and TC has an incredible community.

TC doesn’t get a lot of server transfers because it is a very hard server to get onto.

TC is very susceptible to in-game events. With a lot of roleplayers on TC when there is an in-game event of any kind participation in WvW changes dramatically. Plus, the overall community on TC is older and more mature than the average server – that is not to say that there aren’t kids on TC or immature players but, as a whole, it is somewhat more mature.

TC’s population will probably hold up longer than other servers due to it being the unOfficial RP server.

One thing I have noticed in matches is that a lot of times a ‘loss’ is attributed to population imbalance when, in reality, it’s just players not cooperating with one another.

All sides may be full (as evidenced by queues) but the players may be off doing whatever it is they are doing so the overall objectives are not being taken.

Since ArenaNet doesn’t seem to have any vision or plan on how to address the point system… well, I’ve lost my interest in playing. But, I am glad to know that TC continues to be well represented!

I’ll simplify the point / counter point argument with this:

Charr = kittens

Geniuses > kittens

Therefore, Asura would win.

If you are successfully holding back an attack at a keep / tower then your leveling can be quick as well especially if you are on siege equipment. Plus, you get a fair number of badges of honor.

If your team is -not- taking objectives or successfully defending then leveling in WvW isn’t very efficient.

we can’t even finish grenth or arah chains anymore.

So, organize them to do it. It takes what? 5 people to run Grenth? At least, I’ve completed it with five. But, let’s be generous, and say ten people. Still plenty of people to do it. It isn’t people that are lacking here it’s organization, motivation, and leadership.

Beyond that,

How many people are in Lion’s Arch?
How many people are in dungeons?
How many people are in the lower level zones?
How many people are waiting on dragon spawns?
How many people are in sPvP?
How many people are in WvW?
How many people are -elsewhere- in Orr?

ANet is doing a rapid fire 3 months in a row PvE content while they do still have alot of work to do on the WvWvW front.

I do not know how resources behind the scenes are being distributed, but WvWvW is currently on the short stick.

If I were to guess I would guess that ArenaNet put more resources into SPvP than WvW. Since release I suspect they’ve been a little surprised at how popular, overall, WvW was and were a little unprepared for it.

The lack of vision for WvW versus SPvP suggests this to me. They had plans for SPvP since day 1. For WvW they had no plans other than reactive bug fixes.

I am hoping against hope that they have changed their internal resource management to place more resources onto the WvW team. But, I kinda doubt it. We haven’t seen any vision or direction for WvW other than bug fixing and the bug fixing is slow in coming as well.

I would love to see them change up how points are calculated by tying them directly to population ratios. I would love to see progression in terms of equipment skins added to WvW vendors. And I wanna see.. but.. uhh.. right, wrong thread! Sorry

Back to Lost Shore Impact: Yes, there will probably be a drop in WvW participation across board. Short term prices will rise since the supply of materials isn’t come in as quickly as before.

Long term prices will stabilize lower than where they were in the short term because players will start farming (or possibly new bots) and provide the supply.

The more people freak out about the situation the more prices will spike in the short term. So, thank you for contributing to the price spike. I suspect that by the weekend prices will have stabilized.

Just something to think about: while there will be a short term major rise in prices for farmable goods this price will stabilize lower than what it spikes at as players step into the role of farming.

Basically, it wasn’t worth spending the time farming for goods so people would just buy them. Now there is value for players to farm so they will. This will increase the supply which will lower the price. Will prices go as low as they were before? Probably not but they might since once players start doing an activity on a regular basis they continue to do so. This was demonstrated in EVE Online when CCP banned a huge number of farming bots.

Splaktar, that is, unfortunately, the result of the game being successful.

The only advice I can give to those trying to get onto a particular server is to keep checking the server population levels.

On my server, Tarnished Coast, we have a third party roleplaying site that keeps track of the population levels to assist people to coming to that server. This may be useful to you since Tarnished Coast is a North American server so it may have similar online population patterns as other NA servers (or not, I dunno, I haven’t looked into it.)

There is a simple test to determine if ‘full’ means concurrent users (people online at the same time) or total number of accounts that the server has regardless of their online status.

That test is this: Do server populations drop over the course of time?

If they do, then it cannot be counting the total number of accounts since this number would never go down. When people stop playing they stop playing they do not delete their account.

Ah! But maybe the system only counts the number of ‘active’ accounts within the past week. Okay, but if this were the case then population numbers wouldn’t change on a daily basis plus an upwards change of population would indicate an influx of new players.

But, if you watch the server population levels you will see that they change based on the time of the day. During the ‘peak’ hours many servers are full. During quiet times these same servers will drop down to ‘high’ or even ‘medium’ which indicates that the population level is based on how many users are on at the same time.

Now, this doesn’t indicate what number is used to determine ‘high’ population or ‘full’ population. For all we know, it’s 10 users online which means ‘high’ and 11 users online which changes it to ‘full.’

As to the low level zone thing: All games based on a level framework have this issue. WoW, at it’s prime, had empty low level zones. When the majority of players are at the max level or near to it then the lower level zones will be empty. This doesn’t mean that people aren’t playing the game it just means that they aren’t playing in -those- locations.

If you want to find the majority of players go to the high to max level zones, go to SPVP, go to WvWvW, go to Lion’s Arch, or go to the dungeons.

@whiran he bought gold low and sold it high, nowhere does he say he stole accounts. Seen it ages ago, I’m on top of this stuff. You have the burden of proof.

You are correct, I do and I cannot definitively state with 100% certainty (nor did I) that -all- gold sellers engage in illegal activities to obtain gold.

You are also correct that he never says he stole accounts or that he would. But, he talks about how the gold sellers (to him, being a third party in this) were changing their ways towards stealing the gold or stealing accounts instead of farming it towards the end. He wouldn’t steal the accounts himself but he would buy the gold from people who had stolen accounts.

That’s what I was trying to highlight.

This seems to have played out given the high rate of occurrence of hacking attempts on accounts and successful hacked accounts. But, seems is not a statistical truth it’s my opinion and impression, nothing more.

Given that, and perhaps I am totally wrong we’re still left with the fact that these activities -do- happen even if they are a minority activities which I doubt but I am open to it being a possibility.

Even if stealing accounts, botting, and otherwise doing illegal or simply ‘against the rules of the game one agrees to’ things are not the majority of ways that gold sellers use to obtain the gold these are definitely results from gold buying.

How you prevent players from buying gold to goldsellers ?

They.9516, if you take a few moments and do some research from people on the ‘inside’ of the gold selling community you’ll quickly discover that the majority of gold sellers do, in fact, steal the gold or break gaming rules (botting is against the terms and conditions of most (if not all) MMOs which, essentially, makes it illegal in the context of the game environment) to obtain it.

Here is an interview that is a couple of years old now but it still relevant since what was said has played out as predicted in that interview by the insider.

The gold selling ‘industry’ exists in a very grey area. In many ways I see similarities to it and the ‘mob’ during prohibition when they only dealt with alcohol and gambling.

Originally gold sellers used human resources to obtain the gold in a relatively legal manner (real humans controlling multiple accounts and putting time in to obtain the gold plus buying the gold off of players who, for the most part, legitimately obtained it) and have since moved to obtaining the majority of the gold via truly illegal means – stealing it from accounts flat out and stealing accounts to use for bots.

At the end of the day, gold sellers are very bad for games. Gold buyers are just as bad but gold buying has become to prevalent that people are pretty ambivalent towards the buyers. Realistically, gold sellers do not want to compromise the accounts of their clients because people who buy gold once will, typically, buy gold more often.

I had an acquaintance in WoW who bought gold. He showed me chat logs and emails of his transactions and I gotta say the level of customer service from the gold sellers was incredibly good. These guys know what they are doing at that level but that still doesn’t make gold buying okay.

If you treat people like flocks of birds or schools of fish you’ll begin to understand crowd dynamics a bit better. This, in turn, will provide explanation for a lot of these price movements.

If I were to guess as to what is happening it would go like this: Someone makes an off-handed comment about wanting to increase the use of a class of resources.

Someone notices this comment and quickly buys up a bunch of stuff.
Someone else notices this comment and does the same thing.
Yet another person notices and does the -same- thing.

People who were unaware of the comment see the price rising and start buying for no other reason than they see the price rising.

This causes the price to rise faster which, in turn, causes even more people to start buying the item because they want in on this ‘sure thing.’

At this point, people who use the materials realize that the price is going up fast and they better buy in before the price gets too high. So, they pile in on the buying spree which sends the price going up even faster.

Eventually, the market will correct itself assuming that the original pricing was where the equilibrium point was. But, given how many people continue to purchase at these higher prices, it may be that the items will settle in at a new price that is higher than the original price.

But, all of that is to say: This isn’t manipulation of the market as such. This is how markets work – even the stock market. People buy and sell on emotion. The majority of people buy when prices are high and sell when prices are low.

Low Lvl Areas Empty... Not many replays contents

I’m part of the ‘problem’ if you want to look at it like that.

I have a level 80. I don’t play very much any more at all. And, when I level up my lower level characters I do so in Eternal Battlegrounds.

I don’t go into the zones.

But, then again, in a game like WoW, I -hated- the level grind to get another character up to max level. I hated redoing content since I had already done it. And, when I did level up alts in WoW the zones were empty.

I really liked the suggestion I’ve seen tossed around a few times about ‘underflowing’ zones. That is combining the quiet zones together on an underflow server. This would bring all the players together into these zones just like they do for overflow situations.

Reserved names unlocked: a polite but unhappy response

Southclaw, where did you read that your Guild Wars name would be reserved in Guild Wars 2?

Everything I look at about reserved names indicates that the reserve period would end shortly after release of Guild Wars 2 so I am not understanding how you managed to find out about keeping your name without noticing that the reserve period was supposed to have ended two months ago.

Suggestions to reduce market manipulation

in Black Lion Trading Co

I’m in agreement with Astraea: one guy having multiple of an item does not indicate market manipulation. That just means the person was incredibly in-game rich, incredibly lucky, or breaking the rules somehow.

Or, the guy could be lying.

If I said I had a -thousand- precursor items and put them all up for sale would you believe me? I can make.. err.. produce screenshots too!

Regardless, none of that is market manipulation.

One of the biggest issues I see with threads like this from people who claim market manipulation is the lack of proof to back the claims. If someone makes a claim then they need to back it with strong evidence that indicates that the claim happens.

All too often people write “there is market manipulation” and when asked to show why they think so they come back with, “it’s obvious!!” – well, no, it really isn’t.

Most of the manipulations can be shown to have been caused by something other than purposeful manipulation. Sometimes it’s a “perfect storm” event, sometimes it’s a combination of factors, but, to date, I haven’t seen a really clean example of manipulation in the way that the author has tried to claim.

I actually played today!

First time in forever (okay, almost two weeks) and I must say that CD is a cool enemy once again.

If only we could all timeshift so we’d be on at the same times. I suspect that CD and TC have very similar participation rates when it comes to WvW.

As an aside, this morning when I peeked at WvW I saw CD happily going from map to map to map, one after another, and capping objectives. What of it? It makes sense. You ‘complete’ one map and move on to the next. TC lost almost all (maybe all of it?) map control after that.

Anyway, CD, it’s good seeing ya’ll back against us. Think we could petition the powers that be to create a time distortion field and align the server play times?
