This is a great idea. It is hard to even tell that there is a day and night cycle unless we look closely. I would like there to be a clearer distinction between day and night and perhaps even weather affects like rainfall and dust storms to be added in the future. They could maybe even change the way the world becomes according to the day/night cycle. For example have nocturnal creatures spawn at nights and have NPC’s become less active.

SweetFX can make your nights pretty dark without messing with the daytime look of it,since you can make shadows darker and light stronger or less stronger seperately.
That would be like toasting a toast with a heat lamp.

I disagree that ranger longbow’s 3 skill, “Hunter Shot”s stealth is useless. It’s fantastic for transferring aggro onto a pet or allies in pve, as well as a short stealth for running past mobs.
Thats not how stealth works, you will gain tha aggro back as soon as you’re visible again.
I’ve tried this myself a couple of times.

All that real darkness will do is to make players crank up the gamma to play at night. Then when they log in the next day and it’s daytime, all the colors are washed out.
Other than darkening objects the further from you they are and dampen the color pallet ala Nights in White Satin;
“Cold hearted orb
That rules the night
Removes the colors
From our sight
Red is gray and
Yellow white”You will never have true darkness because players will want to see what’s ahead.
Even for you, this thread is about a slider whereby you can adjust your own night brightness. This is not supposed to affect the gameplay. If you don’t want dark nights, simply leave the slider at 100%.

Torch
Noone has aver talked about the torch. Why? Because noone uses it.
This doesn’t have to mean the torch is bad, it just means that there are much more vialbe offhand weapons. This wont change. Therefore my suggestion is:
Make the torch to a mainhand weapon.
Torch #1:
Simply like every other autoattackchain.
It could inflict burning, though.
Torch #2:
I’ve got two ideas so far:
Either you hit one enemy which will cause him to stack burning like warrior sword #4 stacks tornment and leave a firetrail
or this attack will be an explofinisher.
Torch #3:
This one will be a firefield wich either stacks burning or deals a flat amount of damage to enemies within the radius.

Longbow
The Longbow has one of the longest ranges ingame but due to the damageloss of the pet and the range combined with the fact that most classes in PvP or WvW can simply blink to you, the weapon is nearly useless.
My suggestions are focussed around durability, so you can atleast hold your distance to your target.
Longbow #1:
This should be an attackchain like any other melee weapon autoattack.
The 3. attack should cripple your enemy, so you can maintain your distance.
Longbow #2:
Simply too weak. Needs more power.
Longbow #3:
This needs a massive damage increase. Since stealth is pretty useless in PvE and the damage is below the weakest autoattack, there is no point where you want to press 3.
Longbow #4:
I’m debating wether it should be a root or a knockback.
The knockback is a nice way to get rid of defiant stacks. However the root would synergise more with other weapons.
Longbow #5:
This attack is ok but it would be nice if you could cast it while running.
Another nice idea is that you can cast barrage without groundtargeting, so you can shoot it over walls in WvW.

Axe
The axe is a short range ranged weapon which can do lots of things but outshines no other weapon. It got a pull, a reflect, a slow, pseudo AoE and lots of finishers.
However the damage is rather pitiful.
So here are my suggestions:
Axe #1:
Change the autoattack to melee with higher damage output
Axe #2:
Combine old Axe #2 and #4, so you got an AoE pull which pulls all enemies hit.
Axe #3:
I’m kinda ok with this attack.
Axe #4:
This will be the old axe #1. So you can choose between melee and ranged attacks.
Axe #5:
It’s ok, but it could be stronger. The reflected damage could be doubled, the cooldown lowered or the range increased.
If you don’t like the suggstion of the mainhand melee axe, you could switch axe #1 and axe #4.

Sword
The sword is a very mobile weapon with 4 leaps and 1 evade on 3 attacks.
However the gameplay feels very clunky due to the long cast-/aftercast times and the uninterruptible leaps on the autoattack chain.
I want to keep the mobility of this weapon but also make all of its spells on demand.
So here are my suggestions:
Sword #1:
Remove the leaps on the 2. and 3. autoattack and replace it with some thing else.
I don’t want to have a simple 3hit combo, but I don’t know what would fit to the kit – room for suggestions!
Sword #2:
Hornet Sting is neither instant nor predictable where you will land in the heat of battle.
I would rework this to a double leap, same as the 2. and 3. autoattack now is, which cripples your enemy if you hit him and turns into a tripple leap if you hit an enemy once. This skill would get a long uptime of 10 seconds, so you don’t have to leap immediately after your first leap to use all your charges, and a mediocre long cooldown of 20 seconds, starting after the first leap.
Sword #3:
Serpent’s Strike got an evade and is an instant ability, which is both nice. However the animation is too long. So either the evade time has to increase to match the animation time or the animation time has to be cut to match the evade time.

This is meant to affect the PvE ranger weapons, but since PvE and PvP didn’t got separated jet, it will also affect the PvP ranger.

There are a lot of player who think that the ranger class need some buffs.
In order to work on this issue, we’re try to gather suggestions to rework some weapons of the ranger.

I think there have been enough threats stating that the ranger is underpowered in most cases (even if few ones still don’t want to accept that the ranger is underpowered).
If we want ANet to fix the rangers, we don’t just have to optain their alterness, we also have to come up with some good ideas.

We’ve made hundreds of threads giving constructive, logical, and supported feedback that has literally all been ignored since launch. Why should I, or anyone else, take the time (again, again, again, and again) to continuously take part in a yet another suggestion/feedback thread?
Since we have a CDI thread where I can spam the suggstion we gather in the thread I’ve posted, I hope we can make a difference. It is still a better idea than just cry about how bad we are. But if you got some older posts related to weapons, you can post a link on the thread, so we got all ideas clumbed together.

Related to VOLKON’s idea of weather and daytimes affecting the gameplay:
- Changes to darkness are universal.
- Changes to darkness scale with the phase of the moon. Full moon same as now, new moon considerably darker (but not excessively so).
- Darker nights can then be used to allow for new mobs to spawn with unique drops and for unique night time events to kick off.
- Darker nights (universally) in WvW could alter strategies, encouraging activities under cover of darkness. This could be enhanced by reducing the range you can see nameplates in the dark.

Yes, my concept would have to be balanced and tested (as would any changes to be honest). However you have to admit… it does open the door for more types of content to be added to the game. Why only change the darkness when you can also do so in a way that livens the game up with potentially new mobs, new events that kick off in the night, new strategies in WvW, etc?
If there’s a change to be made, why limit it in a way that doesn’t allow for potential growth, as sliders would? If you’re going to go for it, go for it with gusto and make it matter!

The vast majority of players (and no one in WvW) would deliberately disadvantage themselves. A slider fails the cost/benefit sniff test most stinkily.

You left out that sliders would be a waste of time because people will, by nature, set things to be the most advantageous. Even those that try the slider initially will soon set it back once the disadvantage bites them in the butt. So disregard the slider, it’s a silly idea.
Greater darkness at night should be simply universal. No gimmicks, no sliders. What could be interesting is if in WvW you coupled the added darkness with a reduced distance in which you can see the enemy nameplates. Suddenly the night would actually mean more in WvW. (This wouldn’t work with sliders, btw… you can see the enemies at a great distance even before you see nameplates.)
What would ultimately be needed to be decided is how much darker should it be? Pitch black? No, too much for this game. Dark enough to reduce vision to the limits of the minimap perhaps? That’s interesting there… maybe half the minimap? Twice?
No sliders, universal darkness level, reduce nameplate visibility in proportion to darkness level… this could prove to be rather interesting.
Me myself, as dedicated PvE player would use this all the time.

Something like this, in order to not be effectively a waste of time, should have some actual impact in the game if implemented. Just allowing a slider and the option to make it darker means that it would be rarely used, and not at all in WvW, so there’s no actual benefit to the vast majority. However implementing it universally in a balanced way can have much greater benefits as mentioned in the possible WvW scenario above. Right now we agree that night really doesn’t mean anything in the game. Most of the time I don’t even realize it’s night.
But you know what would mean something? Phasing the moon and adjusting darkness to the phase of the moon. Full moon would be as bright as it is now, new moon would be considerably darker (but not so dark as to hamper play significantly). Then you could even do more than have crickets chirp at night… you could have mobs spawn that only spawn during a certain level of darkness. Extra nasty creatures of the darkness with unique drops would be a wonderful addition to the concept. A little greater risk, a little greater reward. On the WvW side you could see groups waiting to try a golum rush under cover of darkness. Small yet sneaky groups of players would be able really strut their stuff then.
Make it universal, then build off it.

A threat, I was starting in the bugs subforum, however, since a threat was opened here, I will post my issues here aswell:
I got random music changes, after taking falldamage, changing the map or simply without any reason.
The last time this bug occures was when I stood in the grove. Suddenly combat music started to play and didn’t stop until I logged off.

It should be kept in mind that environmental game lighting consists of numerous light ‘objects’ as well as larger ambient light areas, all with individual settings of hue/saturation/brightness/radius etc. and scripted behavior. A second optional lighting setup would require a duplicate of all environmental lights to exist in game. While a good idea it might not be feasible from a technical standpoint.
I’d be more than happy if they just simply made the nights globally darker and more dramatic for everyone.
There are 2 huge enviromental lights.
The first one is a white light which lights up the day enviroment.
The second one is a blue light which lights up the enviroment at night times.
Just simply give us the control over the brightness of this blue light and it’s done.

I totally agree on the night being a little darker but if it was realistic darker. I’ve played on some games. Thief series (about to be ruined by Thief 4 – The Moron Age). Going full dark would be making a massive element of the game prone to to thieving and Anet would have to overhaul a lot, lets face it. If they made the nights darker without allowing thiefs to be thiefs. It would make thiefs laughable as agents of the night.
If they had thought of or could be bothered doing things like this from the start……
But we have SAB to compensate so fear not.
Either that or ANet would admit to the profession being wrongly named and should hae been named “Mugger!”
I’m gonna say it once again. This should be optional. So ANet don’t have to care about how much you can see, you can turn your screen black and they still don’t have to care since it was your own choice to turn the night for you that dark.

If we see dueling, we better not see it in the more populated areas of Major Cities. I already had to deal with the people that spammed their horns as if they were honking a vuvuzela at the 2010 World Cup… I don’t want to have to deal with people blasting all their skills on cooldown because they want to show off how “pro” they are.
I’m all for dueling, and I will admit that I’d love to see the stadium in the Black Citadel be converted into a 1v1 battle arena similar to how the Queen’s Gauntlet worked with bosses. Now that would be awesome.
Oh, I would like to see 1v1 in towns. With the lvl100 townguard joining the fight, stombing both duelists.

I wouldn’t mind darker areas of the game, where it matters to use a torch.
Seriously though. Drop full screen gamma to about 0.65 and everything is darker, whilst torches/fire appear brighter.
This would be the worst of all solutions. You don’t just tone down enviromental light, you tone down all light which looks just awful.
Beside, I don’t run GW2 in fullscreenmode.

Otherwise stop talking trash about sense and nonsense of this suggestion and and bring up some real reservations, if you have some, so I can crush them.
Also, let me get this clear. This suggestion is pretty much for PvE only. For those guys who want to explore Tyria at night. At dark night. This is not meant to affect PvP or WvW in any way!

How does League of Legends succeed. It’s even worse when it comes to lack of new content etc. Apart from an occasional champion release.
You play with different champcombs vs. other players.

I would kill for axe to have a melee option. The first time I read ranger was going to get mainhand axe I was so excited to setup an axe/dagger melee ranger. Instead I was only allowed to throw my axes away
So much this…… I wish we could throw them at range and then chop them in melee
That was kinda the idea behind the double melee/ranged autoattack.
