How does my character know Mordremoth?

Well, a player saw the vines, had to name a Dragon so he/she thought “You look like a Mordremoth to me”. Because of reasons.

But yeah, what did you expect, an actual story progression? “Let’s go on an adventure, find out what’s with the roar and the vines!” 2 hours and some random plant monsters later – “This has to be a new dragon awakening, and his name is Mordremoth!”. Makes perfect sense to me.

Just adding my 2 coppers: I absolutely don’t feel the need for my character to be the center of the universe an the most heroic of all the heroes, I’m an adult and do not require spoonfed gratification and constant attention, thank you very much. The fact that my character is one of many people involved in a coordinated effort to achieve goals and defeat obstacles is much more immersive and fun for me.

In fact I always cringe in games, movies or books when one character single handedly saves the world.

On the other hand I find the constant presence of “bi-conics” to be a nuisance, I’d much rather see NPC’s who have actual motivation to be present during respective storylines, and rotate between stories. For example it made sense for Rox and Braham to be there during Flame and Frost etc., but in my opinion it would be better if in season 2 we would face Dry Top with the Seraph. Bi-conics dit in that storyline like a train in a grocery store.

Just my humble opinion, take it or leave it

There is also a nice slip up with steam creatures themselves. In season 1 it was stated, that Scarlet reverse engineered the steam machines, while in season 2 the story tells us she has created them.

Was it stated by Scarlet herself though? As far as I remember it was just ASSUMED to be the case, never confirmed directly by Scarlet.

It was assumed, not stated as a certainty, but if Scarlet created them, then Asura PS doesn’t make any sense.

Who do we have there…

A failure of a norn who couldn’t defend his homestead and now tries really, really hard to build his legend. Propably because mommy doesn’t love him, and he’s short.

A rebelled baby asura, who doesn’t like her teacher so she ran away.

A charr kittenigned from joining the Stone Warband, because Rytlock isn’t nice, and Braham’s cognitive dysfunction let’s her feel needed.

A broke noble. Enough said.

Ex-guard who didn’t like silly rules and started a “detective agency”, but it just so happens that she has a slow period in the business (AKA, nobody wants to hire her) so she follows us around.

Yep, we’re being accompanied by a group of lowlifes, keep an eye on your wallet during story missions!

PS. This post is not serious. Just in case your wit is sharp as Brahams and you didn’t notice.

Or maybe he was a Soundless all along, (there was no metion of PT in first Bazaar, but it doesn’t prove my point ofc) and during the second Bazaar he can be simply (wait for it!) LYING and pretending to be a Dreamer. Not everyone speaks the truth teh whole time, you know.

Why would he lie? Few possibilities:

- He likes to lie to people. Compulsive liars are do exist.

- Mordremoth told him to. Because even if players/npc population aren’t privy to teh fact that Dream protects from corruption, Mordie sure as hell knows it, and might have commanded his puppet to lie about it, just in case. On the other hand, careful and smart villain are hard to come by in heroic fantasy.

- He is batkitten insane. Why not? He might be simply driven madder than a battub full of drunk monkeys and talk jibberish, even though he retains some composure and semblence of sanity at first.

Just my theory

Zephyr airship = Kiel's doing?

in Living World

zwierz.9012

I should think the truth would be obvious by now.

Before Councillor Ellen Kiel underwent a sex change (ostensibly a lifestyle choice, but more likely a means of covering “her” trail), she was a man named Elim Kiel. Does that name seem suspicious? It should.

“Elim Kiel” is an anagram for “Like Lime.”

Keep up, folks.

Mr. Kiel took his appellation as a nod to his penchant for limes. Of course we all know that limes originate in Persia, and thus lead us to the Persian Empire. Specifically, the Achaemenid Empire of 550-330 BC. Founded by Cyrus the Great, the Empire’s capital was established in Pasargadae, near modern Shiraz, Iran.

You know where this is going.

In Pasargadae was the mighty fortress, Toll-e Takht, a seat of Cyrus’s power. You might even call it a…. praiseworthy castle?

Eeeeh?
Eeeeeeeeh?

Do I have to spell it ALL out? “Praiseworthy castle” is a rough translation of…

SHIRO TAGACHI!!!!!

He’s back, he’s worked his way onto the council, and he’s using his power to sabotage the Zephyrites in order to prevent us from accessing Cantha! Meanwhile, he’s building a private super-ship to take him across to wreak his vengeance!!!! IT’S SO CLEAR!

We’re going to need a strong, savvy leader to organize the transport of the millions of heroes of Tyria to end the Embargo in Cantha and save the world! We need Evon Gnashblade in LS2!

You just won the internet, my dear sir!

Factions and racism against Sylvari?

in Living World

zwierz.9012

Lorewise the whole point is that the races have to unite together to fight off the dragons, which they can’t do if they can’t set aside their differences and fight each other. Cause of that, I don’t believe we will ever get factions or else it makes the whole point of uniting moot.

Indeed, the story is about overcoming differences to unite against common foe and all, but in game the “overcoming” is very rarely touched on. Everyone is magical friends with unicorn shooting bows (I exaggerate of course).

The story about unification against the greater evil would in my mind at least gain a lot of value by actually showing the “differences” that are to be overcome. And that was I think so far not delivered.

Game of Thrones Comparison

in Living World

Posted by: zwierz.9012

zwierz.9012

I watch Game of Thrones because I like characters that shift between good and evil. I like characters that are gray. This is why characters such as Logan Thackeray bore me to no end; they are unable to make any mistakes, because the writers do not want them to. We’re told that Logan once made a mistake in the past, and now he’s redeeming himself. Whoopteedoo, how about an actual mistake now? How about we see him do something that contradicts his usual character? Let a character that is normally noble, do something not so noble. And let a character that is usually the villain, show a more human side of his personality.

Characters in Game of Thrones constantly make mistakes, and we as an audience can see what these bad decisions result in. It’s like a long row of domino stones, where one mistake results in more mistakes, which eventually results in catastrophic events.

I also like being surprised. How boring would the story be, if you can always predict who will come out on top, and how something resolves itself? George RR Martin avoids easy solutions. When ever an easy solution presents itself, he cuts it down, in favor of something far more interesting. I bet a lot of GoT viewers thought they knew how episode 8 of season 4 was going to play out, and that’s right when a shocking twist is right around the corner.

I keep going back to this example, but that one personal story mission where you and Logan set a trap for the White Mantle is such a polar opposite to this philosophy. Logan agrees to meet the White Mantle out in the open, while the player and several soldiers wait in hiding. And then they spring the trap on the Mantle, who don’t suspect a thing, and it totally works. HOW BORING! Who wrote this?! Was it really hard to think up a twist? Here’s a few alternate ways how this quest could have played out:

-The Mantle spring a trap of their own, the player and soldiers are captured.
-Logan betrays the player, in an attempt to gain the confidence of the Mantle. His betrayal later turns out to be part of the plan all along.
-Logan messes up, the Mantle see through his act, and everyone is captured.
-Someone else springs a trap on both Logan and the Mantle.
-Logan is killed on the spot, and the player finds himself outnumbered by the Mantle. Fleeing is the only option.
-Logan turns out to be a mesmer in disguise, delivering the player to the Mantle.
-A mursaat shows up and this demands a radical change of plans. Logan is nearly killed.

As usual MQM voices my thoughts, I will soon be in a position, where I won’t have to bother logging in to reply if this trend continues.

Kiel??

If Kiel is some sort of villain mastermind, she is better at it than Khilbron ever was considering she has a majority of the player base convinced she is good as well as the NPCs. And if that is the case, then why was Scarlet (according to the forum hate train) so cliche and predictable? Does Kiel have writers that outclass every other writer at Anet? Do they have a separate team dedicated to just Kiel’s arc?

I would love it to no end if somewhere along the line it turned out, that Kiel is the real mastermind, and Scarlet was just a stooge pu there to distract everyone in a wild chase while Kiel makes her “goodie two shoes” moves behind the scene to grab all the power.

That would be in my opinion an absolutely amazing (and frankly, logical) plot twist that would restore my faith in GW2’s writers.

Hell, if I’d want to take over a chunk of Tyria, that is exactly what I would do. Finance some mad idiot to entertain the attention of the masses, while at the same time hitting everyone’s buttons “fighting” the threat and “warning” everyone about it, so that instead of forcibly taking voer, I would be given willingly the power I want.

I don’t believe that to be the case, but it sure as hell WOULD be true if I would write the story.

EDIT: I remember, when playing through Personal Story for the first time shortly after launch, I was absolutely sure, that Trahearne is in fact working for Zhaitan, after all he spent years in Orr, studying him, and while sylvari can’t be corrupted by Zhaitan, they sure as hell can be bad guys.

And it was such a perfect and obvious set up for a plot twist (So, I lead all the Orders to your doorstep Master, kill them now, and only danger to your reign is done!), plus I have a natural distrust for “goodie two shoes” characters, since I strongly eblieve that evrything has it’s motives, and people who help selflessly usually have well hiden agenda. And you don’t hide a charitable agenda.

I was very disapointed when I finished PS and realized that Trahearne is indeed just a boring puppet with no character at all, just like Kiel.

I’m not seeing this. Kiel was the one warning the Captain’s Council once evidence of the attack was delivered. While we were told that should Evon have been elected LA would have stood a better chance, it isn’t Kiel’s fault that LA was unprepared but the rest of the Captain’s Council.

Or that what Kiel wants you to think! Consider this, please – Coucil of Captain is formed of the most savvy pirates in the high seas, why would they ignore such an obvious threat to their city?

They wouldn’t, unless someone would present them with the idea in a way so ridiculous and laughable, that any further proof provided by anyone else be dismissed out of hand as a “conspiracy theory nutcase talk”.

Who was the first person to deliver news of imminent attack? Kiel. points finger and hides under his tinfoil hat

I would generally prefer a step back from homogenization towards racial flavoured story, less Pact solving everyone’s problems and more “Race X does stuff and invites other races to participate” i.e. Charr clearing the Brand with their military, players of other races sent to “help in the name of maintaining positive relations with charr” or something along these lines.

Pact and other monolithic structures without character are quite uninteresting and kill the potential for interracial play, politics, grudges and so on.

Personally, I’m sitting on the fence right now. I (as MANY other people have) have waited years for this game to be worthy successor of GW1.

First the story in LS1 simply sucked. It wasn’t interesting or even logical to any extent, though it did improve a little towards the end. As a huge lore fan I felt a big blow to my interest in the game.

Now the Megaservers practically killed my interest in RP. In any other game it would mean an autoquit reaction. However since I am a huge fan of GW1 (can’t say I’m a fan of GW2 anymore, though I want to be!) I’m waiting for LS2, and if the story will be similarly reta… lackluster, then it’s good bye for me. Yes you can have my stuff :P.

I don’t care about new zones, races, or whatnot, as long as the story is good, and I can enjoy roleplay. If it isn’t, then well, plenty of fish in the sea.

Megaservers and RP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

zwierz.9012

I think the whole tangent topic of ‘what does or doesn’t constitute a RPG’ is taking attention away from the fact that there is a large RP player base in this game, despite the fact that GW2 doesn’t seem very inclined to make it easy for them.

Well…. it’s kind of the same issue, really. The RP part has been slowly getting removed from RPGs, and other genres have been plugged into the gaps that were left. It’s a trend in every MMO, really. The RP playerbase has been gradually pushed out of the genre, and is now considered a “niche crowd”, and support is treated as a waste of resources.

RP communities still persist, however as someone on the EQN roundtable put it, that’s not because of the games, but in spite of them. There are millions of roleplayers that would actually like an online roleplaying game, but they know what to expect from MMOs so most avoid them. Whereas if the games weren’t continually making it harder and harder for RPers, and actually reversed that trend, it would draw many many more RPers back into the MMOs.

The problem, however, doesn’t lie with the development studios. It’s the parent companies, such as EA or NCSoft. They don’t care about the product at all, just as long as they get a profit from it. The genre, the quality, the communities are all non-factors. The development studios basically get told “do what we say, or find another job”, and are forced to make sacrifice after sacrifice, and end up with something much different and many times much worse than what they originally wanted. If you look at TOR, the devs from Bioware said there were many nights where they left the office in tears because of what they were forced to leave on the cutting room floor. This isn’t unique to just EA, it’s become a common trend in all MMOs.

Conversely, if you look at indie games, they’re almost the polar opposite. If you ignore the quality of the graphics, and just focus on the meat of the games, they’re much much better. They have to be. However, the problem a lot of indie studios run into is needing to cut corners due to not having enough money to actually develop what they want. If the money were spread around a bit more, or if the parent companies would butt out and let developers have full control, the overall quality of the games would skyrocket. Ironically, higher quality games would lead to more players, which would lead to much more money overall.

Today’s industry is primarily just about the short term profits, and funneling that money into the next short term profit venture. Basically….. exactly how flipping drugs works. There’s no long term. Anything that would promote long term health of a game, such as RP and PvP, gets ignored in favor of the revolving door design.

What’s even more ironic is the wedge that’s been driven between the RP and PvP crowds, when they’re actually fairly similar in a few key regards. They’re both very low maintenance, mainly just needing a good core starting system and only minor future updates. They both stick around for the long term, due to being able to make their own fun and not needing it made for them. They’re also both creative thinkers, instead of rotation spammers and facerollers. As we’ve seen in GW2, support for both the RP crowd and WvW crowd is sorely lacking. sPvP got minor attention, due to the esports delusion, but it’s primarily about the living story, throw away content, and the revolving door dynamic. RPers and PvPers really should be banding together to stand up for long term players, but most are too busy continuing to demonize each other based on myths to do so. Those who actually do both RP and PvP often get it from both sides, because they’re not strictly one or the other. Which just makes the revolving door dynamics even easier to pull off. It’s….. a very sad state of affairs, really.

Fully agreed!

I haven’t played GW2 in over a week now, just reading through forums, and frankly, at this point, I don’t think I’ll be logging anytime soon…

For strength, don’t forget that Logan was able to lift a big charr in heavy metal armor with one hand.

He also grown a bit for this scene, IIRC. I always took that scene as a necessity for the Logan Fleeman/Rytlock Blingstone plot, but never for a moment considered that it is anything more than a hollywood cliche, impossibility of the feat aside.

Never occurred to me that Logan can actually be that strong, other than for the needs of that scene with physics flawed so harshly (Doesn’t matter how strong Logan is, Rytlock’s weight would still flip him over the edge, because Logan is half the mass of Rytlock, plus Rytlock has acceleration and Logan has no support – ergo, two crispy critters if physics would be applied).

How did Rytlock get Sohothin?

in Lore

Posted by: zwierz.9012

Logan might be claiming, that Rytlock stole Sohotin form Ascalon not because of the swords physical location at the moment of thievery, but of what the sword represens.

For examply if English crown jewels were stolen in let’s say Spain, the british people would say they were stolen form England, right?

So maybe that is why Logan says what he says, just my way of thinking. Of course, this means we have no clue where was the sword after Ring of Fire and where it was in fact stolen.

As awesome as it may look on paper, if you try to RP in WvWvW, prepare for meeting massive hate even from your own server. WvW is fast-paced, sometimes stressful, and aims for maximum efficiency. Stopping to type in some snarky IC comments in the middle of a siege will be either drowned in the ocean of tacticly actually relevent information (like “inc.west” or “dont waste supps on outergates!!”) or after the defeat it will get lots of hate. If RPers keep to the only safe parts like the keep of their servers borderland, you will also be hated for taking up slots from those who would actually contribute to the WvW.

Also if the WvW maps would turn to the last RP haven, there would be queues, reaching into the EotM, and you are back where you started, unable to meet up with RPers.

you’re clearly not from TC. We’ve had a TON of RP in WvW, with pirate commanders, yak parades, and even a few RP weddings in other servers’ garrison. We like RP in our WvW. It wouldn’t be the same without it.

There are of course people yelling “rpers get off wvw” in map chat, but they tend to stop bashing, when X server zerg of 30+ attacks the garrison with 5 roleplayers and two minutes later the zerg is dispatched without much effort and roleplayers didn’t even brake characters.

We’re usually NOT the helpless sheep non roleplayers tend to think we are.

EDIT: I myself tend to make a lot of typos when fighting against zergs though, quick typing while using skills and dodging kills my grammar. shakes fist

In the storyline, Dredge steal a book. They also make written plans. In dredge mines I found some left over notes. On paper.

Sooo… HOW IN TEH NAME OF EVERYTHING THAT IS SACRED DO DREDGE READ WITHOUT EYES!?

Really, how? Any thoughts?

Even if there would be a miraculous krait who is nice to others and kind at heart, I bet he would be butchered by first person he meets, without having the time to say “hello, I’m not like the others”.

I’d say Jormag, of all the dragons, J.mag seems to have the most personality, simple as that.
