Responding to Pwnzor.5682:

Greatswords are massive, long blades (often around 1.4-1.6 meter), designed for heavyly armoured infantry, wearing plate armour. Usually the blade in front of the cross was dulled, so that it could be gripped shorter in tight combat situations, point was usually round, since thrusting with a blade like that is not a good idea.

Longswords were much shorter, (70- 85 cm), grip is designed for one hand only, and the point usually being ended sharply, though earlier models often hand a rounded point. Longsword was designed to use with a round shield, or almond shaped one, best fitted to use in loose formation, but also useful in tight formation.

Plus, the site NoxInfernus directed you to is going to give you more information than I ever could, and more accurate too!

BTW, “Greatsword” is only one of subtypes of two handed swords, and most (from the non obvious fantasy designs) greatswords in GW2 are in fact kitten, zweihander, norman two handed sword types, and I think I saw a shamshir among the skins also.

Beats me. See, kitten swords are a bit longer than normal longsword, but not as massive as two handed swords, and have a longer grip so that they can be used both as a one handed weapon, and two handed.

They sometimes also have a sharp point, though there are models with rounded point as well.

EDIT. Again with the kitten! Grr you know what word I mean I hope?

Ranger worth it or worthless?

I disagree with rangers being useless in wvw. At the moment I run my ranger as a wvw solo roamer, specializing in taking camps solo or in duet.

With some micromanagement and good reflexes, the build I’m running can buff up to around 15 might + fury (best I noticed was spike of 21 might), at the cost of survival, or resigning from might to gain survival ability in fight against 2 or more players. Easily able to cap a camp alone in under a minute with just npc defense, or around 2 minutes with up to 2 players stacking camp defense.

Rangers mobility and ability to engage effectively multiple enemies at a time make it the class to roam in my opinion.

On the downside, thieves or mesmers usually manage to run away on last legs and before I have a chance to finish them off.

Also in zergs it’s a useful profession, easily tagging multiple opponents while staying relatively safe, but lack elementalist’s ability to meteor shower.

Of course that is just my opinion with ranger gametime since beta 1.

I will say greatsword feel more like long sword. Skin-wise, sword is more like long sword but, in real, a long sword is more likely to be used more effectively with both hand. I prefer using a long sword with both hand to increase the speed and power so i will go for greatsword with a more compact design (human Tier 2 GS is a very good choice)

I’m a history reenacter for 6 years and I never found it comfortable to use a longsword in both hands.

I think we have a game/reality misconception on our hands.

Below, I posted a picture of real life longsword examples. As you can see, none of them have a grip that enables comfortable and efficient use with both hands, unless you don’t like your fingers anymore. You were thinking about a kitten sword maybe?

EDIT – really? A kitten sword? Yay, censorship! I meant of course a “JohnSnow” sword, not kitten.

You keep repeating “torture, torture, torture, wee!” like it was a good method of obtaining information, even in our world.

If torture was effective, alternative methods would never be developed, and there is a reason the alternative methods are used irl.

But we are talking about Guild Wars universe. In GW2 universe, torture is the LEAST effective means to obtain information you could possibly imagine, and using it for that purpose seems like nothing but ungrounded sadism.

In a world where you have: MESMERS to mind control a person to tell you everything and even be your spy when needed, NECROMANCER to simply kill someone, summon his soul and force the soul to tell you what you want, ALCHEMISTS who could probably quite easily obtain the equivalent of skopolamine, and so on and so on, I could go on forever. In THIS SETTING you choose torture as your means of obtaining information? That’s ridiculous.

We’re driving a bit far from the subject, don’t we?

We voiced out concerns, ANet changed the release schedule.

I’m pretty sure that it was constructive criticism from interested parties that caused this reconsideration, though of course it is my opinion.

I myself dare to enter “cautious optimism” mode and see what and if we hear on the subject at this point. After all, making even a small change like RP flag in a program like this probably will take time to debate over, eventually implement and whatnot.

If and when we hear that nothing will be done to acknowledge the problem for us roleplayers, then we can kill the Batman.

I’m simply willing to give ANet a little benefit of a doubt until events develop further.

Yes. In the information we received there are perceived flaws that have potential to be damaging – hence we raise our concern and propose solutions simple to implement.

For example the above mentioned a dozen times checkbox that allows a player to mark what kind of activity he or she is at the moment aiming at – hearts/rp/champ train/dolayk slapping/etc. that could be marked before entering a map that would prioritize the person to a map with people who marked similar boxes alongside server, guild and other priorities.

It’s the lack okittennowledging our concerns that is raising eyebrows, lack of any sort of relating to our worries.

EDIT: Adding to very good post from TottWriter – we have near 10.000 registered “core” roleplayers who are mostly interconnected with each other via friend list, and/or in guilds. The amount of roleplayers who are not counted is impossible to say without data, but I’d say it’s probably minimum double the number.

We have roleplayers who “I don’t use sources outside of the game to facilitate my game”, the “I never heard of gw2rp site, but roleplay”, the “I’m a newcomer and I’m looking for connections” and many other groups!

EDIT 2: wow, I wrote “porbably” instead of “probably” It’s YOUR FAULT :P (just kidding ofc)

I’d say it’s in most cases potential success, that in some cases may backfire and cause more problems than it solves.

As I have mentioned in other threads, except for the Megaserver, I’m looking forward to it.

I expect the new traits will give me some new goals to strive for on my main, and improve alt leveling experience.

New dye and wardrobe system will make it easier to have my characters look the way I want them to, and give me hours of fun unlocking all the possible armour pieces.

It’s only the megaserver that causes worry for me, due to the fact, that while it will make it easier for me to experience some of the content (for example events that only happens with enough people in the area), it may throw logs under server communities and rp.

So in short – I think will at the very least the update will bring some fresh air into the game.

If you are on a server (or guesting to one) with RPers, in a guild with RPers, and have RPers on your friends list, then you are going to be placed in maps with RPers.

If anything, this change will make it easier to play with other RPers since you can now use the guild and friend list to play with fellow RPers whereas before you could only use the server.

Are there going to be more non-RPers around? Sure, but that’s a function of there being more non-RPers playing the game overall.

I really think you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. Especially considering that ArenaNet has already said this is going to be a work in process that requires tweaking.

I understand you’re concerned, that’s a natural reaction to change, but I think you’d benefit from taking a step back and realizing that nothing bad has happened (yet), so there isn’t any reason to get so worked up.

The goal of this change is to make it easier to play with similar players, it seems absurd to me that your natural assumption then is to believe that it will make it harder to play with similar players.

Answering paragraph after paragraph:

- Not ALL roleplayers like to be part of RP guilds, also parts of the community are spread on servers other than TC/PS.

- Yes, we will stil be able to play with guildies and friends. However meeting new people MAY be made more difficuilt in this system, as well as there MAY arise a series of obstacles for a new roleplayer wanting to find roleplaying friends.

- More non roelplayers around? Oh well. Some people have justified concerns about griefers and trolls, as non roleplayers sometime take a kick in thinking (wishing) to spoil the fun of others. Will this happen more often? Probably and there is nothing no one can do about it, including Anet, unless they would start banning people who grief roleplayer, but nobody really expects that to happen.

- Blowing out of proportion? We are trying to be heard and make sure, that Developers are aware of our fears and have the opportunity to reassure us that they are taking our demographic under consideration, same as world boss slayers, dungeon players and so on.

- This has not happened yet. Indeed. Well, let me use an example. You see a glass on the edge of a table, looking like it may fall. Do you warn the owner of the glass, or wait till the glass falls and yell “Yo, be careful, so that your glass doesn’t fall!”

- The goal is indeed to make it easier to play with similar players. However our community HAS NOT apparently been taken into consideration when the system was created. Hence our justified fear that it will “facilitate friendly play” of everyone, but us. We simply ask to receive equal treatment as any other demographic of players.

On a final note – as was stated before, we, roleplayers are a community that is in many ways self propelling, we create our own stories and enjoy the game whether or not new content is being released. We are not asking to be given new content only for us, or be treated better than other communities. We simply ask to be treated as equals to other players, and being taken into consideration when planning new updates such as the Megaserver, which has potential to be an irritant at best, and a disaster at worst for us.

DISCLAIMER: I am of course presenting MY OWN opinion on matters, I do not act as a spokeshead for the community in general!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Majority of the changes I like very much, up until the announcement of Megaserver I was waiting for the update impatiently.

As for Megaserver – I think for the game overall it might be a positive change, it has the potential to hit the community I’m in and server communities in the face like a drunk flying dolyak though.

Since the objections and solutions have all been repeated many times in “Megaserver an RP thread” I’m not going to blabber about details here.

Overall however, I think the patch brings many positive changes to the game from objective standpoint.

My personal wish? If there would be added “lore Vistas” on the maps where one could track down and collect stories concerning local events and history to collect in hero panel.

Hell, the system would probably not affect e much either personally. I am in a roleplay guild, on Tarnished Coast. What it would affect the most is probably random rp, which I of course also enjoy, and hamper the community as a whole, more than any single individual.

We can of course just bunker up in our own rp bubbles and survive, but the community is formed by hundreds of guilds filled with people with different interests, AND single unguilded individuals.

It has a potential to make a community wide events near impossible, and to put random encounters with other roleplayers under the axe.

The system has also the potential to make our game richer and improve the community, but it seems like roleplayers aren’t worth “facilitating of friendly play”. Hence the larum we’re raising.

I guess we will have to see how it will be, but I fear that it will be the same situation as with “walk” button toggle. Roleplayers were trying to get action throughout betas about that (you used to have to hold the walk button to walk), with no effect whatsoever, until someone noticed that toggle walk will help in sticky situation in jumping puzzles. Bam – instant fix. At least that is how it looked from my perspective, I’m not sitting in ANet developers’ heads.

Zwierz… More people in a zone=More people who wants to do same thing as you!
You probably done all those jump puzzles, map completions, hearts alone so far, thought you gona be very excited about this?

Oh I absolutely do not oppose to more people being grouped in zones doing same activities.

I’m simply voicing my concerns about:
A – how the system doesn’t recognize roleplayers at all from what we’ve heard so far, and may split the community, destroying what we have worked so hard to build.
B – how people who enjoy doing a wide variety of activities might face obstacles in what they are doing (for example I would be doing hearts to get map completion an one of my alts, and then I’d want to do kill Tequatl, but system may group me still with heart completion folks)
C – how without any control by the player of what WE want to do at the moment, the system basically causes danger of stripping our abilities to CHOOSE who we want to be around.
D – possible destruction of server wide communities and identities.

The flag system proposed many times in this thread would be a perfect solution, simply prioritizing grouping of people with similar goals, be it RP, map completion, picking our noses or whatever.

I probably sound really bitter about the problem and overhyperbolize, I have a tendency of sounding like that when I write in english (my seventh language, I tend to create convoluted sentences).

However simple response “Get used to it or wahtever” we have gotten so far seems to indicate that mine (and other players’) worries have in fact justification!
