Hi, i’m an old pvp primary player who quitted game 1 year ago more or less and came back for expansion. Actually i win most of my match not thanks to my skills (i’m still pretty rusted) but with map control and rotation, i constantly look minimap and see how my enemy moves, so i can easily decap/conquest free point and bring +1 in fight. At low level you can easily win most of the matches thanks to this, because the skills are still not developed. So yes, it’s still worth beginning now.

I dont think SB#5 is the problem, even S/D can take shortbow…

So this is actually the problem that Nocta was talking about. Our combat styles (s/d d/p soon-to-be staff) don’t affect our ability to take shortbow. So if we have a weaponset that is able to fight people 1v1 AND our shortbow, then no point with fewer than 2 people on it will be safe from us.

In essence, taking a duel-oriented weapon set (if it existed) doesn’t detract from our ability to be across the map.

Actually the problem is that we keep staying in meta thanks to our shortbow (5#) and not thanks to our duel-oriented weapon set. If for some reason anet should decide to nerf shortbow 5 to 300 range thief would instantly kicked from every game mode.
It’s like mesmer 1 years ago when it was a portal bot, you bringed mesmer only for portal, now thief is the same with 5 of shortbow.

I don’t see how long I’ve played Thief even matters. This isn’t a discussion on whether the class is UP or whether it needs buffs. My point is that the community here is overly negative and toxic, as evidenced by the replies. I apologize if I didn’t phrase it the best way, but I think I made myself abundantly clear.

Man it’s quite simply, you pointed out that we didn’t help with constructive idea wtc. but you’re totally wrong. There are tons of thread with suggestion and fix for the thief appearead during years, all of them totally ignored. Ok you have 37 hours on thief, i have more than 4k and i play from beta of gw2, i see often this forum and i can tell you that during years people did tons of suggestion.
Now, after so much nerfs who bring us from god-like to totally thrash people is just bored to keep hope. When you try to give positive suggestion and none of them is used you just get angry, and this is what is happening.

So tecnically daredevil is supposed to be a spec based on dodge and evasion right? But we got only a +1 endurance bar and mathematically we only get one more dodge than any other profession, in fact if u start dodging and use your dodge everytime is possible (this is what often happens during fights) u will just have 1 more dodge than other classes, that from your +1 endurance bar at the start of the fight. If we want to be really evasive we are forced to take daredevil AND acrobatics for the vigor, cause DD alone doesn’t bring us an increased number of dodges during fights. Why do i have to take 2 line trait for let work what it’s supposed to be the playstyle of daredevil?
So the idea is to merge acrobatics with DD, taking the only 3-4 traits usefull from acro, and rework the acroline to give buff focused on pistol and condition damage, or dual skills.
The traits that should be putted into DD are:
Vigorous Recovery Gain vigor when using a healing skill.
Feline Grace Gain vigor upon successfully evading an attack
Endless Stamina The effects of vigor on you are enhanced.
Expeditious Dodger Gain swiftness upon dodging.

You can merge feline grace with Evasive Empowerment, so when you actively dodge something you get +10% bonus damage on next hit and vigor for example.

Stronghold Queue Bug

I was doing Stronghold this morning so i check the box only for stronghold queue, despite this my third match was a conquest. I checked the box also during the game and it was only stronghold queue, so it has to be a bug. For some magical reason windows 10 make a screen of my desktop instead of the game window, so i don’t have screen.

Do you want to make staff viable?
- Smoke field on 4# that last 4s or at least make the skill instant to make usefull for reactive play and not lucky prevision how actually is.
– 2# if i use it i want to be stacked on the target and not to get through, if i don’t have a target i have to fullfill max distance. Distance covered should be increased to be similar at Heartseeker, staff lack of gap-closing except for #5, but it has an initiative cost too high for that use.
- 5# keep the iniziative at 6, speed up execution and put evade frame.
If needed increase general DPS of skills.

I love the new thief elite spec, and I think it’s great that it draws focus away from stealth and towards the other aspects of thief. Daredevil is the only elite spec I can confidently say I’m definitely going to pursue on any of my characters.

Are you new on thief? Cause we had an evasive playstyle based on dodge despite on rely on stealth, it was S/D with old acrobatics, more or less 1 yeand and half ago. Then S/D got nerfed and acrobatic reworked/nerfed with also vigor general nerf.
All this cause they intended bringing back with elite spec, others classes didn’t received this treatment.

Ah, do you think that thief is in a gret spot actually? ok ok…
Our actual role is focused on fast decapping and do +1 thanks to our mobility from 5# shortbow, now try to think what it would happens if only this kills get nerfed.
Do you think that a class is balanced when his role depend from just a single skill?
Please nerf also 5#shortbow and delete thieves from gw2, you are not capable of balance them, especially KARL who just nerfed and nerfed and nerfed. (i can’t forgot that troll trait 1 sec stability when out of stealth “so if an hammer stun is incoming you just go in stealth and then get revealed, and you will be ok”)

So, the only use of thief in pve it was to spread aoe stealth that was usefull to skip some point during dungeon/fractal, now other professione could do this while doing also other usefull things.
Specialization: mesmer got time travel machine, ranger become support godlike necro-gameplay style, engineer a field control who can stomp anyone with his gyro; meanwhile thief got third dodge, so he can dodge a third time before get rofl stomped.
The next balance patch will give us 2s more vigor on a trait no one use cause it’s a trait line useless (acro) and you can’t take it cause u need some kind of condition clancy from another trait, we’ll also get a incredibile 20% damage buff on pistol, the best weapon for condition damage, except for P/P which is kinda useless cause of imajor limit of the set of skills.
In pvp thief it’s just a +1 or a sneaky decapper thanks to his 5# shortbow, so KARL, if you are reading me, PLEASE NERF 5 SHORTBOW so i’ll can delete my pg for being totally useless.

Ok, when i’m stunned and try to use my shadowsteap while still focused by enemy shadowsteap doesn’t work and go in cooldown, dunno if it’s cause of enemy hit or cc they chain during i do my teleport, but i think it shouldn’t happen also if it’s a cc cause shadowsteap is istant right? It happened 4 times today in 4 different games and make pretty hard for me to play thief.
I think it’s a bug cause never happened before today patch….pls fix fast

No Quarter Trait: need explanation

Ok, i saw this grandmaster trait in Critical Strike line yesterday, i thought it was the only thing that could make people chosing this line, but then anet did a change:
No Quarter: Instead of extending the duration of a single stack of fury, this trait will now apply its own stacks of fury to avoid allowing fury to reach unintended durations.

Now i’d like to understand how it works, if this way:

in this case i could use this trait to gain a decent amount of fury according to duration of original stack, quite usefull.

Or it works this other way:

in this scenario new stack duration overlaps the old one and you can just gain 1-2 stack at max, imho kinda useless for a grandmaster trait.

S/D sPvP Role

As a S/D thief you role is to roaming every time. Your contribute in teamfight is low, so at start don’t go mid but check the cross point for an invasion to your close, or go far to take time for capping. You have to avoid 1v1 (unless is against a mesmer or another thief), just focus on decap free point (always always always looking at minimap) thanks to your fast moving and stealth, and moving around your point to hold until your team come, or for help a mate and do a 2v1.
S/D thief is not for damage or burst down target, it’s for surviving and moving as fast as you can for decap and helping mates on point.

Ok i have always problem at night with gw2 connection, only with this game so it’s not a connection problem. Now i’m trying to play since 10 minutes but everytime i log in and press a button, start to lag, i can’t write in chat, change map, use skill, nothing! Then send me to select character window with “client lost his connection and bla bla bla”.
Checked connection everything ok, no problem with other game.

Arenanet it’s clearly trolling thieves’ players, in the last 2 updates we got a + 0,5s buff to assassin equilibrium and now this, meanwhile a lot of nerfs killed S/D and bumped down D/P.

In the last 2-3 days i had lots of lagging game, with also a kitten of few seconds, but the problem was not mine, because i was monitoring my ping and generale connection and i didn’t have problem with any other game. In particular yesterday night any skill didn’t start, everywhere i was (lionarch,WvW,pvp) , and after 30-40 sec i was kicked from the game, this happened everytime i logged for almost 10 minutes, i didn’t have any problem with my connection! i checked!
I’d like to have an official reply from devs, i know this is impossible….if the game doesn’t change this direction i’ll be forced to quit, most probably many others people will do the same.

I can't understand the purpose of S/D

Since we get 20 secs of revealed instantly I gave a little break to my D/D and went for S/D since it depends more on evasion, but ? cant really get why you would want to use it unless you have extremely awesome reflexes and dodge everything (which ? can’t)

not high damage as D/D, not useful against melees like P/D, ( though I thing its easymode, press 3 and watch your enemy die in torment stacks)

I’ve seen some awesome guys with S/D in youtube and in game, even today, a guy just wrecked me, but I fail at it for some reason, maybe the lack of complete gear,or.. i don’t know really I fail at D/D too, if I miss my first burst i just leave my pc and go get a cold drink, think its time for me to play ranger press 2 and watch ’em all melt at 1500 range, but what has thist o do wit the topic ? Well, umm yeah why is S/D used ?

Too many crap all together. You played weapon set viable just in wvw (but also here S/D is stronger) ; S/D, S/P, D/P are all better weapon set than D/D or P/D, if you can’t dodge an hammer stun or eviscerate by a warrior that’s not a problem of weapon set it’s yours. Just play with this weapon set and learn to dodge trough looking at enemy animation, so you will become a good thief.

I was testing a fun build (superior rune of the vampirism ad sigil of blood) and several time i noticed during soloQ that my runes were bugged, i didn’t take the leech from healing (i didn’t notice leech buff appearing and there weren’t nothing also in combat log). Often they bugged at beginning of soloQ, sometimes also during match. I noticed a similar problem with sigil of blood, it procs too rarely despite 5s recharge, looking at the combat log confirmed my thought (i was playing a build with assassin amulet and fury, so near 83% critical and unload spam).
I hope this will be helpfull for some fix ^^

This is not a feature patch, most of the things announced are simply fix wanted from community since 2 years (f.e. commander). Now i should wait other 6 months for class balancing and needed fix, meanwhile, no sab, no legendary, no class, no races,no pvp improvement….should i continue?

People don’t understand that mesmer and ele are not supposed to be the best 1v1 class, because they can do many thins that thief doesn’t.

Why should one zerker be better at 1v1 than any other one, its all about personal preferences. From a tPvP point of view I would argue that a thief should actually do less damage than 1v1 zerker builds of other classes because hes is a better roamer and has the best escape.

I personaly think mesmer is still the king of 1v1 because illusions have a almost endless high skill ceiling.

Thief no more 1v1 king? Well, his roaming is no more usefull. If you can’t win a fight in 1v1 it’s useless roaming because enemy team can easily counter you leaving a party member on point. Imo the thief have to be the best class in 1v1 because it’s the only role he has in a game; can’t join a teamfight, can’t support party, can’t heal, can’t tank (evades 8 times in row i’ts useless, you need to evade when you are under pressure, not stocasticaly, and this is hard to do when focused by 2 or more people, you can just disengage and run away). Mesmer, elementalist, necromancer has multiple role in a teamfight that thief don’t have, this is the only reason because thief can’t be downgrade to a simple 1v1 class but need to be THE BEST, otherwhile simply remove class from pvp because it’ll become kitten.

Thief since beta, so 2 years…
Every meta always the same problem, people start to QQ with thread “nerf S/D”,“Nerf S/P”, and this time again with “nerf S/P”.
I think thieves are in a good spot, they can contribute, if well played, to team victory, but i can assure that rarely happens.
I’m also playing a D/D ele, at beginning i was killed in 2 sec by thieves, now i can resist and also win against them in a 1v1. It’s just a problem of practice, S/D is not invincible, the are class with a better DPS (mesmer,warrior,S/P thief). The role of the thief in a game is to win 1v1 and move faster between point, if you nerf something the class will become useless. People don’t understand that mesmer and ele are not supposed to be the best 1v1 class, because they can do many thins that thief doesn’t.

Deadly Arts: Revealed Training – Gain up to 200 extra power when you are revealed, based on your level
So…i should invest 30 point to gain 200 power for 4 sec when i’m revealed….no one will do it! There are better ways to use that points!
Critical Strikes : Invigorating Precision – You are healed for a % of the strike damage dealt. The current rate is 5%. Does not work on ambient creatures.
Maybe should be useless for wvw, but not sure.
Shadow Arts: Resilience of Shadows – Stealth you apply reduces 50% incoming attack damage. Does not work against condition damage.
Seriously? half damage when i’m stealthed? Very useless for solo play and team play
Acrobatics: Assassin’s Equilibrium – Gain 1s of stability when you are revealed. This is a high skill cap trait as you need to use it when you see a stun/daze coming and attack first to reveal yourself and gain the stability.
This….this is THE BEST, so when i see an upcoming stun attack i have to use CnD and then hit the target, maybe while my enemy take a couple of tea.
1 second for GM trait, you are a genius! (maybe also a champion genius like someone!)
Trickery: Bewildering Ambush – Stealing applies 5 stacks of confusion for 5 seconds.
It should be okay…maybe….

Yeah sorry for the ignorance, but you know, nobody is bad by nature, i’m just stupid
I was refering to the fact that the interrupt build i was using is not efficent vs a class that can stealth everytime he want, you know, interrupt build works on “controlling” your opponent.
By the way if you are a thief, pls gimme some advice, i’m just rank 34 in pvp.

Sure, I will give you a clue or two! Stealth is not equal to "unlimited stunbreakers w/o CD”. Also “a class that can stealth everytime he want” exists only vs a bad opponent who lets him do it.

Lol I don’t agree. Nobody can stop a thief from steal thing all the time. You may be able to stop one or so but a d/p or d/d thief will keep going at it and you can’t really stop them (especially the d/p thief).

D/D need to hit a target, if they miss the C&D it’s initiative waste. D/P takes time to stealth, he have to spam 2 skill and when he uses HS you can imagine the final position, it’s not hard to focus on where the thief probably will stay.
Many people don’t really understand like thief works because they never played.

I’ve been seeing a lot of threads pop up with varying feedback about this skill. I’d appreciate it if you guys could toss some feedback in this thread about the skill, and try to be as concise as possible.

Also, try to answer these questions:

  • Do you main Thief?
  • When do you feel that Pistol Whip is unbalanced? (scenarios would be great)
    • How does it feel unbalanced compared to other class mechanics?
  • What would you do to change Pistol Whip to better fit the class/game?

Additionally, if you feel Pistol Whip is exactly what it needs to be, I would like you to say so in this thread.

This thread is for me personally so I can properly communicate to the designers how you guys feel about it.

My main pg is a thief since beta and i have played every modality of the game (especially wvw and pvp). According to me PW is OP if you know like skill works because, a noob thief will fail to strike an enemy, but a good player will kill you every time simply spamming 3, and this is the problem. I’d like to see PW nerfed in terms of damage (with lower initiative cost) or cast time (but in this case you should buff for damage). Honestly i hope you make again viable S/D beucase i like a lot this set ; LS without possibility of steal 2 boon, it’s useless, people stopped to use it for not waste initiative (you make same damage of autoattack and steal just 1 boon that last…3-4s?) and with this build you don’t do a great dps (it’s high, but not near to S/P, elementalist ecc.), you gain more evade but it’s quite useless because a thief that evade and don’t kill/do a good damage it’s not good for pvp/wvw/pve.
Thieves are hard to balance because they combine great dps with a decent survival (blind, evade, stealth,teleport), if you nerf too much one of them there is the chance that class became unviable.

Only one dev sometimes play thief in pvp and wvw, so what do you expect? They think only to nerf ‘cause crying people who don’t know how to play against a thief. Read next leaker balance, buff trap (5 sec of recharge, seriously?) and nerf skill damage (no one play unload because P/P is useless in pvp/wvw and they should know it).

if the skills will give 5-6k heal to my party i think venom share thieves will be called to be in group raids

as for now with my panic build full venom, groups like me so consider i can heal them on the seconds burst so my group can sustain longer in the burst (and with necro new heal skills also)
can be interesting

Yeah, you are the only one who will die, because if your party member miss the target or get blocked, they still have another healing, you don’t!

I think it’s useless also in a venom share build, you waste your healing skill because with one dodge (2-3 hit evaded),block,blind and other crap you can’t heal. Oh, you also need a target to heal yourself!
I think that to be usefull should heal for a base amount of 2000-3000 hp, with 5 strike that can heal you for 300-400. Maybe so it would be used!
Otherwise is useless in pve/pvp/wvw, you will dead many and many times if you carry this heal.

D/D didn’t get nerfed. Increasing base initiative gain by 33% is a pretty big deal.

It’s more than a big deal. It’s a MASSSSSSSSSIVE buff to all thief specs.

Yeah, it’s usefull have 4 of initiative instead of 3 when you are stunned,dazed, immobilized, downed, ecc.
Next time i will lost a fight cause to missing access to stability,protection,regeneration or evasion (sword) i’ll think: “oh well i had 4 initiative”

We are thinking about making it into two skills that both cost initiative so we can balance the while thing more easily. For example this would let us increase the stun duration.

What no. Not my Pistol Whip.
Why can’t your team just handle skills as they are?
There is not much different in PW’s core from Hundred Blades, Zealots defense, and Blurred Frenzy but you need to split it in two? What?
Sure sometimes reworks need to be done but I dont think this is the case at all.

Whole thing with Initiative was a global resource to use skills as you need them. The More you split skills the more silly it becomes for the initiative system as I feel for it. If its the case you might as well give the Thief CD’s instead of ini if this is going to be a frequent addition.

Maybe I’ve misread you guys , how do you want S/P to play as a weapon set as it seems to differ from how I feel about it. I thought “Hit & run strong damage that doesn’t get blown up while doing that damage”, and brings significant disruption relative to S/D which is a more defensive kit that weakens (boon steal, cripple, vulnerability) a target while having some of the disable of S/P (tactical strike).
You want to make it just a heavy CC kit?

This would just be a buff to pistol whip, with the one caveat that you wouldn’t be able to animation cancel and chain stun.

It would let you do things like use part one, then do some attacks then immobilize target, then use the flurry when they are immobilized. It just opens up skill choice on that weapon.

Honestly i agree with many of the change, only 2 things let me perplexed, cast time on shadow return (principal meccaninc of the sword) and utility of hard to catch.

No, I am saying that I don’t want the balance of the thief held hostage by a 15 point minor in critical strikes so we need to take that initiative away from there and put it into the base class mechanics, which is exactly what we are doing.

Only one question, Hard to catch it will work like now, or you have some change in mind? Honestly any thief know that this trait is more a danger rather than a salvation and it not helps to improve our survability like you want.
