You guys do realize most mmorpg’s you only use 5 buttons anyway. Take wow and rift for example. You may have 100 skills but you at the end of the day in fighting a boss. Only use on average 3-7 buttons if that. Only thing GW2 did was get rid of the useless skills. Say like If you had Lightning Bolt 1. Then when you hit max level you get Grand Lightning. Which is just Lightning Bolt 1 max level.
Don’t confuse depth with a over abundance a million buttons. I’ll give you another classic example. I play rift a cleric in the game. Rotation Bolt of Judgement,Vex, Sanction Heretic etc..The new max level came along BOJ was replaced with another bolt. Vex was replaced with another spells named scourge. What really happen there is the old skills got replace but you still have them. Which gives you a false thinking that you have a lot of choices. Almost every mmo is like that. Like I said GW2 is the first game not to smoke and mirrors it.
Its not so much how many you will use in a fight, as how many there are to choose from and how many unique mechanics that are available. IN most other games you get hundreds of times more skill variety than Gw2 and that is before you get into roles in the trinity.
crit chance> power>conition>crit damage.
FT is a proc monster and you need to feed into the procs you can abuse ( low/ no icd on crit procs)
After that FT is mostly power attacks and a never ending burn stack.
I did a little calculation on the viability of flamethrower dps. I did it mainly because I wanted to mess around in matlab/freemat a bit so probably it is not 100% correct.
So how does it work?
In the attacked .txt file, there is some very crude code you can copy and edit with any editor and execute with freemat (free) or matlab. It is nothing that couldn’t be done in excel or whatever, but as I said, its main purpose was to mess around with matlab.
The sources used are also linked/mentioned in that file.
……What it does not take into account: caused Vulnerability, increased chance for procs, %-increases for either weapon, other abilities than autoattack
My stats with rifle equipped: Currently 1918 power, 52% crit and 46% critdmg from a mix of soldier/knight items and 10/30/0/0/30 traits. Certainly not minmaxed but the mix has suited me up to now.
Why did you post this trash if you:
1. dont account for any of the reasons you use Ft over other weapons or kits. abilities, procs chances
2. your build for is all wrong. Fun fact the 25 point alchemy ability increases damage by 1% per stack of might
These stay out of theory craft if you arnt going to be serious about it. All you have done today is set the engineer community back months as idiots now can point to your useless misinformation and scream to the high heaven like it was fact.
goody, now we just need an eta. Now if a mod would sticky this so the nice people dont have to hunt for an answer to the kit stat/sigil issue anymore.
I know the new trendy thing is to say this gaming is dying but I have 3 friends that just picked up the game this week after watching Angry Joe’s review and no one I have started with has quit. Yes they are playing less but everyone is still playing.
We’re all eagerly awaiting some more solo/duo content hopefully before January/February but if we have to wait that long, heck I’ll just keep stock piling karma.
>.> did they see that it was from just after launch. Just like every other super favorable review of the game. In contrast there has been little to no Major fandom, hell gw2 is behind wakfu in fan excitement.
ps wakfu >>> gw2, and i will not play french swill either.
What makes me laugh is people complain about ascended gear (OH NO a tiny bit of extra stats!) that cost a ton of money to make.
Yet this whole time Triforge Pendant exists and you don’t see anyone complaining about that.
that’s because it isn’t and out right upgrade to anything. A lot of people would g as far as openly laugh at the suckers that acquired that trap of an item….
Lets hope recount and inspection or gearscore will never come to pass..
why are those any worse than gear/ stat linking?
I know you were hurt by your casual play in other mmos but dont blindly hate on tools that give useful info. Its bad enough that you cant optimize your play for lack of ingame ehp/dps/ hps figures.
Did you read any of that? They HAVE MORE THEN TWO people working on bugs….
How can you survive in today’s world without the ability to read?
I read it and i dont belive your statments. Thus i ignored your spotty logic, ( honestly its poorly veiled hearsay and thats basicly a lie ), and keep my point moving
Now if you can scare up post from a dev that directly countermans the post that i link then we can talk. Note if Anet actually used thier PR team; Jon would have back tracked that 2 dev comment in a heart beat. Sadly Anet will get kicked over this for at least another week.
that would mean they have more than 2.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/General-Patch-Discussion-merged/page/4#post746293 ( its on page 3, but Anet wants to be tricky with links)
As you see he says 2 desiners with no hints at anyone else in the team.
ps: i didnt imply that they need to higher more devs, i think Anet has put too few on important tasks. hell as it stands the balance team could be shut down with a bad order of sea food.
This is because of balance. I have spent time talking directly with JP and Chap, the 2 lead designers, and they have a lot more people that work on bugs then just balance.
With balance you do not want too many people changing things because then it becomes hard for the main devs to keep up with all the changes and predict how they will effect entire balance of the game. From talking to them, Jon and Chap, I could tell that they are very much on the same page and seem to think a lot alike. (in terms of gaming and direction) Meaning that they most likely work very well together, which is needed when working in the type of environment that I can promise they work in.
This means that they are able to get more done than having 30 people trying to put their own balance into the game and then trying to make it all fit together. Bug fixes ARE done by more then 2 people and you are foolish to think otherwise. Balance is finalized by 2 people but have several meetings to come up with ideas and suggestions.
Once you understand that a company can have 10 teams working on different things that have no correlation directly with each other. THEN you will understand why they can do things like release new content, fix bugs, and release new items all while at the same time working on the aspects of the game that are already in place.
^ This is the hardest concept for MMO players to understand followed closely by “Why can’t you just fix this bug?! I’m sure it must take 2 minutes to fix!”
Yeah thats all just excuse for a willfully kittened blance team. you dont need an army, efficiency is cut as members increase, but a 5 man team is easily twice as effective as a 2 man team. And just Fyi 90% of balance and bug fixing is making trivial edits to databases that dont involve any real coding. Occasionally devs need thing not covered by existing systems and then the coders are dragged out of thier holes.
ps this is a video game the expectation of the dev team are nothing. If windows pulled the junk work; Microsoft would be bankrupt in a year.
pss your defence makes the lacking level of balance work look even worse, because that amazing duo didn’t do a very impressive job
I have no idea how programming or debugging or whatever works. I am like a computer infant, but if i had to make a guess based on simply common sense, I would guess that in computer code, one thing leads to another, and one thing can have profound effect on other things. If this is the case, then the less people you have debugging, the more efficient it would be.
nope.
Proper coding is done modularly and in essene can be pulled apart and fixed as many discrete part. though in practice you get limited on how many physical humans you can keep in harmony, 2 being laughably bad and 10-20 pretty nice.
What has happened is Anet has simply put a very very low priority on bug fixin and a very high one on content, presumably because balance isnt going to sell gems as fast as new content.
Given the different behavior in seemingly equivalent skills, i sometimes wonder if the GW2 code is less modular and more copy and paste.
Unless the difference is intentional, that is. But then Anet won’t talk to us and list those that are intentional and those that are bugs.
I’m pretty sure the programming team uses much more complex structures that are more than just “modular” for a game of this scope.
Modularity is a design principal, a really really importsant one. Complexity is irelavent, because modular code is infinity easier to debug and modify than so code “blob”
that would mean they have more than 2.

The Ancient Karka Shell was not meant to perfectly fit your build exactly.
It was meant to be a sizable reward that offers a really significant stat bonus to everyone who participated in the event, irrespective of their build (or whether they even have a build). And a nice souvenir, as well.
If you already have all-exotic accessories that you hand-picked to complete your build, then obviously it is not for you. If you don’t like it, I suggest throwing it in the Mystic Forge.
What’s next? People complaining that the 20-slot bag is a “worthless” reward because all 15 of their characters already have a full set of 20-slot bags each? And that they want the gold they spent on their superior runes of holding back?
chill out none is all that worried about a sucky reward short of the fact that its mostly a waste to make item that are generally considered trash. I far as i know it wasn’t required to obtain Remember if people want to express negative feedback in moan form it is fine and next time anet might make reward that are desirable.
It dropped for me, but I’m not seeing the attraction to the stats? While it gives some of everything, it gives comparatively little of the stats I need compared to my current gear.
Somebody want to enlighten me?
Just guessing here, but likely because it has a higher stat budget than most accessories readily available.
The 3% crit is equal to most accessories which include crit, the rest of the stats are either more than half or just under half of regular accessories.
so instead of 40, 40, 56. you get 25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 25, 3%. Not to mention, but I think it even has magic find?
a higher stat budget of useless stats. its horribly rare to find a build that uses most stats , rarer still to find one that actually wants them all and almost unheard of to want them in equal quantity.
They have never every explained why. go search. we have 1 dev response in the entirety of the engineer forum and it is all of 2 sentences. neither of which explains anything. Hell its an apology that auto attacks didn’t work right.
ps dont blindly defend stuff when your out right wrong.
This argument was had not too long ago on guru. 3 people linked it before I even had a chance to find it again. It was explained in detail in august. Perhaps you should learn the facts before making accusations.
ps dont blindly make uneducated accusation when you are unfamiliar with the facts.
then plz do show this bit of lost dev communication. You make the same stupid claim every few weeks and not once has it ever been backed up.
BTW – did u notice – no flamethrower fixes but they have nerfed inc ammo. NICE heh.
thats what the icd has always been, it finally is in the tooltip
M. We need a response as to why our kits don’t give us buffs like the weapons that the elementalists give when equipped AND why they don’t scale in damage with the weapons/armor we have equipped AND why they aren’t effected by the “when switching to this weapon blah happens” runes?!?!?!
Why? How many times do they have to post to explain this? This has been answered, and explained more then once? With how often everyone claims Anet owes us an answer to already answered questions, it is no wonder they avoid the engineer sub forums. Half the threads here are self entitled demands, that Anet replies to their specific post, for answers already given, posted, and explained previously.

Your looking at it the wrong way guys; it not that engineers didnt get any of the fixes they need, its that Anet kittened over all th class by forming a balance team of 2 guys to fix all the class bugs in the game. it must be hard to get that many bug fixes done.
You should give our 2 balance devs a round of applause. And demand the immediate firing of every other director/lead/manager because one of the should know better
if you can rip people off walls into the meat grinder its worth having…
Hi Anders, I’m totally not here so skip this post and read on…
We made the improvements we had time to test. There are still more ranger improvements but when our time is limited we have to focus on things we know we can fix. Signets and shouts are still on the docket, and I suspect some of each of these will get some love in the next time around. As you can see a lot changed in this build for every profession and we have to test these changes as well.
I do still believe ranger is the profession in most need of improvement after this patch and we will continue to make those improvements. If we could fix everything at one time we would, but the reality is there are a limited # of hours to make changes.
I see a lot of talk about ranger weapons, but I don’t think that is the real problem. I think sword and longbow are both good weapons, which is why the changes take longer. The problems are deeper, in pets ability to hit moving targets, trait lines with not enough viable choices and skills that are often too specialized to really compliment the weapon builds. These aren’t things we can change overnight. The change to Greatsword block was in fact a very difficult change, but we made it because we knew it was the right thing to do.
There are >500 skills in this game, 480 traits, and 2 designers working on this. Even then often we are bottle necked by other issues. I’m not going to say we are not working on these things, nor can I say there are things we could have changed but just ran out of time on, but this was a patch that contained ranger improvements and it will not be the last one that does so. Maybe you want more than honesty but that is what I currently have to offer.
Jon
Just 2 devs worked on this junk; that is the problem there. If Anet isn’t committed to balance as much as they want to pump out buggy content i’ll take my $15/month MMO budget elsewhere.
you transmuted it… you didn’t want the stats that it had to begin with.
200 hours to reach level 80, are you kittening kidding me?
I bought the game, didn’t rush anything, did all dungeons, did all the jumping puzzles i could find, explored a lot, tried out spvp and WvW and was 80 on my 4th day of playing, the GW2 leveling process is realy realy fast. The hardcore players did it in 2 days after release. I would say that ~40-50 hours is a normal amount to reach 80.
I have a level 38 alt that has 56 hours of play time on it. I wouldn’t say that 40-50 hours is normal. Normal if you are going fast and missing things. But for those of us that like to take in the scenery, craft, gather materials for crafting etc, then 40-50 hours is very fast.
42.3 hours, you play slow. dont include all the time your not actually leveling.
I’m giving you my /age time. Note that I never stay logged in whilst not actually playing, I log out if I’m going to be idle. I would include exploring, gathering and crafting in my figures however because that does actually count as levelling since it reward experience.
my age was 42.3 hours when i hit 80 and i only did exp activities `80% of the time. you aren’t efficient in you activities.

but its on kotaku. i dont think its worth it.
I don’t pretend to pay attention to a lot of gaming news sites till they have a article relevant to my interest…….but what is wrong with kotaku exactly?
journalistic integrity, they dont have any.
but its on kotaku. i dont think its worth it.
…. Dont worry about it, they started with accessories first for a reason. Ascended gear is a crap half backed idea that was tossed together at the 11th hour; the idea that you can pre-select the upgrade component that people will want in their gear is crazy, but it was the only way to cram a new upgrade type into the mix, without needing to fix the game to handle 2 slots.
What your going to see in the near future:
- ascended tokens because random drops are ‘bad’ and vendors are ‘good’
-ascended quality upgrade components ( all trash drops)
- separate infusion and upgrade slots on ascended gear. they will call it an improvement we ask for but really the mechanic will just be finished
nope
i wanted to hunt for a better colloection of the 3 stats on gear not larger numbers.
Add more stat combinations idiots
I should clarify: The shield granted power/precision, so it did not play into results. In fact, when I tested the toughness boost from the Juggernaut trait alone, I removed my weapons and shield entirely.
activating a kit makes the game think you unequiped you weapons and switch to a ‘weapon’ related to the kit.
the only accessories that are unsalvageable are the karma ones.. i know because i successfully salvaged any and all trinkets i made with my jeweler… while i was leveling it that is.. it’s been a long time now >.>
no any accessories that isnt crafted is soulbound on pick up. Its because Anet was lazy early on when they stamped out karma to gold conversion and just flagged all of the non-crafted accessories because tagging just karma ones was too hard.
im sorry but unsubstantiated hearsay isnt going o get anyone excited. If there eally were a massive balance patch coming any competent dev team would have released a proper preview of at the very least the general objectives of the changes.
no post no changes
or anet is just dumb
The reason why this doesn’t have to be the case is because during large scale skill changes, there was no such thing, not once.
Just dropped the bomb like that with a whole bunch of skill changes.
blizzard, riot, hi-rez, trion worlds , cryptic, turbine and the list goes on. Devs preview patches for the positive pr that good communication grants and the avoid the utter crap storm that springing class change can cause in a community.
kits repalce your weapons, it is a huge problem(bug) with the class
… the industry wide norm of posting about wide spread class changes is just lost on Anet? i’ll set my expectation to low and get my pitch forks ready.
Wild silly levels of inflation would be just as bad as now, but an extra 20-30s a day / 6-9g a month would push up the over all economy from vendor price hell.
Soon™.. Anet is simply terrified to have promise they cant fulfill, thrown back at them like it happens over and over again to the blizzard dev teams .
-the guy that mails ghostcrawler boiled crabs twice a month

Those are only the weapons, which I already knew existed. However there is no armor.
FURTHERMORE, I just noticed that the shaman’s in PvE is not even the same as Shaman’s in sPvP. In sPvP you get toughness but in PvE you get vitality. What the heck?
there are 3 stat allocations for each vendor, its really dumb but Anet hides the prefix/suffixes.
Its not like it is the single largest most wide spread bug in the game
I’m sure we’ll get some love on the 15th fellow Necro brother.
Hang in there baby.
if there were any major class changes their would have been some word about by now.
i take it that i was the only one to acidentally takl to tree face right before the crown him leader. they only pick him because picking you would make one order above the others. i mean you promoted to second in command instantly and make all the important calls. Hell the only thing tree face does is give it that stupid name and rainbow spin.
its just another one of Anes terrible design failing. if your really pissy see what happens when you have minor / major / superiour runes in your gear.
as there are 2 races with any technology at all, it doent pay to make turrets just for one race. Additionally if you read the lore carefully asura are on the decline. Hell they dont know how way-points or gates work; just how to fix them.
as not to get banned again, i will not call you either a fanboy or hoplessly stipud. i will question if you even understand what a qualiy of life change mean.
Anet not putting in what amounts to a very simple feature, so people cat adjust their gameplay to be more comfortable.
ps- the #5 key is just at the edge of easy reach for most human hands. It is mildly annoying to grope for a skill that might be clutch
sigil of earth is one of the man sigils on the shared sigil icd. the first gives you 60% the second gives you 60% of the remaing 40% or 24%.You would be better severed getting another sigil, preferably not another ‘on crit’ sigil.
ps: play aound with cheap minior sigils to find a pair that work together
actually since they skipped it as a design option, it could take months to peel back the old system ,cram in swap-able skill bars and put it back together. it took how many week to fix auto attacks on bundles ( months)
Seriously? You’re worrying about a game when a HURRICANE is about to hit you?
I could get into a mangling car wreck and die days before that hurricane hits- so should I just go ahead and stop thinking about GW2 ahead of time and get to worrying about that instead?
For a lot of us there isn’t much we can do to prepare for the hurricane except buy a few supplies and hunker down and wait. What would be the point of fretting over the hurricane, then?
protip: dont stop stressing untill after the 25mph sustained winds pass. before then trees can still be uprooted. deadly deadly trees
(edited by szar.9054)
week i you better pray to god your alive after a hurricane, before you worry about a stupid event.
ps if you not in a normal hurricane zone you have little hope of wide spread hurricane damge to fixed in a week.
pss invest in MREs and water while you can.
-hurricane country
this is just Anet being different to be archaic an contrary
also i pretty sure i made a suggestion thread about it a month or so back, when i was still enjoying the game
you might need to be a bit frugal with elites but you will be swimming in points one day
well im an engineer irl so i know we can make anything work
