Still think they need strafing. If you want to talk about realism, it’s not realistic for them to not be able to strafe. It is the one thing that does not feel right/feels unnatural.

This. It is incredibly awkward when I hop on a mount and suddenly my A and D keys change from strafe to turn. Please make the mounts strafe, following the same key bindings as strafe while unmounted.

Aside from that, I mostly enjoyed the mount.

Enrage in raid is not punishful enough

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

ATMAvatar.5749

Enrage is just a flawed mechanism in itself that could only exist in gamelike environment and break any kind of imersion. Logically, any kind of human, creature, demon or whatever would just run away the moment they find themself in a dead end. More than that, It’s illogical that something could have a huge surge of strenght after having being bitten to death by other things.

Agreed. There are plenty of interesting alternatives that could achieve the same goal (DPS check) while not breaking immersion.

One, obviously, is what you suggest – the boss tries to escape, and the raid is forced to block the escape and/or kill the boss before it succeeds.

Another would be for the boss to generate an environmental hazard as a result of taking damage. An example would be damaging blood (poison, frostbite, burning, or other condition depending on boss type/origin) which pools at the boss location, forcing the raid to carefully control boss position to avoid tanks dying while at the same time ensuring they kill it before the entire area is covered, which would ensure a wipe.

Yet another (which works best for mechanical bosses) is for the boss to have some overload mechanic which triggers at some percentage of HP and takes a fixed period of time before discharging/exploding, killing both the boss and the raid.

Another one would be to give the boss a strong regeneration mechanic, so that groups simply had to out-DPS the regen. This could be further complicated by adding fight mechanics that take off large chunks of HP each time, so that the DPS just has to be great enough so that the boss doesn’t out-heal the mechanic damage.

One boss could trigger some signal at a particular point in the fight, after which reinforcements arrive to wipe the raid.

There are lots of things that could be done that are better than enrages.

So I really wanted to try the raid but...

ATMAvatar.5749

Also I think your 5% is an extremely low estimate. There are more people that raid than you think.

Actually, the number is probably over-inflated.

The WoW numbers linked match what I recall: ~4-5% for current content, not counting hard modes.

The saving grace for someone who was unable to join a hardcore raiding guild was that the gear and level progression of the game made it trivial to go back to older raids and complete them, so if your only concern was seeing the content, it was just a matter of waiting long enough to do so. That’s one of the few (if only) things I miss from WoW.

GW2’s lack of any kind of level and/or gear progression ensures that raid content won’t become more accessible over time without another mechanism to do so (e.g., easy modes).

That’s too bad, as I would have liked to see the content eventually, but I don’t have the time to devote to a regular group, and I already straddle my tolerance level of people with severe psychological disorders in fractal LFGs.

What is the evidence that Caudecus would take the humans out of the fight against the EDs? Also, we shouldn’t kill the remaining EDs, just killing two is causing problems with magic.

There is no evidence that Eir would involve herself in this. You’re just making stuff out out of nothing.

It took a dragon lieutenant attacking the world summit while she was present for Jennah to commit any forces towards the elder dragons. Even then, she would only part with some strategists because centaur opponents aren’t exactly bright.

Caudecus has made it clear that his endgame has always been taking the human crown. When (not if) he starts his civil war for the throne, Jennah will be forced to pull back what forces she’s committed to the dragons.

The other races will be prepared for it, since they’re used to humans pulling out of dragon fights, but it will still hurt to lose resources.

Is this a new trend?

“Heroic fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy which chronicles the tales of heroes in imaginary lands. Characteristics: Frequently, the protagonist is reluctant to be a champion, and/or is of low or humble origin, may have royal ancestors or parents but does not know it.”

So again

The “hero” is not always the shining star everyone respects and listens to.

That no longer really applies to the player character. It was probably true in the past, but now the player has defeated not one but two dragons.

You could perhaps make the argument that Tyrians thought Zhaitan’s death was a fluke or that the player was merely one of many in the fight. However, after the pact’s near annihilation in Verdant Brink, it was the player who rallied the different races together and was again a central figure in the group that delivered the killing blow against Mordremoth.

No longer can anyone deny the player is a pivotal component in taking down an elder dragon. Lazarus even remarked on it in the previous episode.

That said, I now start to wonder if there isn’t also an inferiority complex component with Braham. In addition to mourning his mother’s loss – his recent time with her made him realize that she was indeed the legend people speak of. With her dead, the pressure for him to live up to that legend has only increased, especially with Norn society being what it is.

He could very well see himself as being overshadowed by the player, with taking on Jormag independently being his only chance at showing others that he’s worthy of his family’s legacy.

It’s all about her, not the team. How many times has she told the team to go do whatever but she won’t be budging from whatever she’s doing?

To be perfectly fair, she’s never really been part of the team. She’s more of a mascot. She’s been sidelined by the team more than once because she’s the youngest and smallest, even when she had her golem handy. She even had an extra dialog option with you in one of the HoT missions about feeling like she wasn’t treated as part of the team.

Now, without her golem, it’s not like the team would be taking her along anywhere, anyway. She does the most good researching dragons right now. It’s a bonus that it happens to align with her interests.

The whole escalating hysteria of “may be a trap” … “probably a trap” … “certainly a trap” just didn’t ring true.

We cannot say that for sure yet. Lazarus has plenty of opportunity in the future to betray the player, and the Mursaat are known for epic betrayal.

Just guessing from past events, one possibility which cannot be disregarded is that Lazarus could be aiming to soak up the magic released when we kill the next dragon or two.

I cannot understand how the game could have issues with writing to a text file. Writing txt files is something that freshman 101 programming courses do.

Those same freshmen tend to ignore little necessary details which can increase the complexity. Writing to a text file is easy. Logging in a friendly, usable, robust manner requires some additional work:

  • What format do you store the logs in?
    • the human-readable format shown in-game
    • XML
    • JSON
    • CSV
    • proprietary, documented binary format
    • something else?
  • Where do the logs go?
  • Do you write multiple logs or just append to one, large log?
  • If multiple:
    • when do you roll into a new log?
    • what naming format do you use?
  • How quickly do the logs grow?
    • can you let the log output accumulate indefinitely?
    • if not, how do you determine when to prune old data?
  • Do the log files need to be accessible in real-time?
  • Do any of the above need to be configurable?
    • in-game configuration settings
    • text-based configuration files in the game’s directory
    • what should the default settings be?

…and I’m sure I missed some things.

Marjory was definitely forceful with her words, but she was hardly disrespectful.

Braham, on the other hand, was an angry child lashing-out. However, it seems likely that is a problem that will take care of itself.

He’ll lead a group of Norn to fight Jormag and get most/all of them killed. If he’s not killed/incapacitated himself, he’ll likely be quite humbled by the fight.

On the other hand, Anet wants to make these stories “epic” so the boss can’t be a pushover. This is an issue for players who want to experience the Story but don’t have the time or the will to practice until they are good enough to beat the bosses. It also doesn’t make any sense for our 1 character (cause as this thread states and we all know, the NPCs are useless) to beat a boss that armies have been having difficulty defeating.

One thing I actually miss from City of Heroes was that you could select the difficulty of missions, where the difficulty affected the levels of the enemies relative to yourself. I tended to ratchet things up to the max, though there were a few times I’d get stuck and have to drop it a notch or two.

The first set of Living Story episodes add a bit of meat between the death of Zhaitan and beginning of Heart of Thorns. I would expect the current set will do much the same.

It’s too bad that the first set of Living Story episodes didn’t start until post-Scarlet. For someone just picking up the game, some instances detailing the rise of Scarlet – the watchknights, the dredge and flaming legion, the aetherblade, and the destruction of Lion’s Arch – would provide a lot of context which is now lost.

The egg was a game-changer in the fight against dragons, and the PC was given a calling to protect it. At a time when you have sylvari turning on the rest of the pact due to Mordremoth’s influence, she turns on you as well. To make matters worse, she did so of her own volition. I certainly would never trust her again.

And let’s not forget Taimi’s revelation that the remaining dragons are picking up properties from those who have been slain. The commander should assume the worst: that Mordremoth’s influence over Sylvari could be passed as well, and it may only be a matter of time before Primordus or Jormag start to use that power.

This is work that will not be visible until it’s beta or RTM. Even then, a significant amount of coding work will still be invisible.

Holy Trinity and Compromise

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The people clamoring for a trinity are the people who played tanks and healers. In a trinity system, they got instant queues and the ability to drop any group that didn’t kowtow to their demands.

Of course, that also meant that the trinity is downright awful for DPS. You’d have agonizingly-long queues to do anything. If you did manage to make it into a dungeon, you would occasionally run into tanks or healers who would threaten to quit (and stall/break up the group waiting for a replacement) if you didn’t give up loot.

You were particularly screwed if you chose the incorrect class/profession – one which could only DPS.

A drake still has a lot of utility. While it doesn’t have top-tier HP like a bear, it does have good HP/armor, a self heal, AoE weakness, a blast finisher, and if you choose an ice drake, an AoE chill.

I (like some others) merely suggest that this is not as cut-and-dry a case of Berserker making the content easier than another gear set. A sturdy and/or utilitarian pet can make a big difference, which is why you’ll also see many solo eles running with their earth elementals out.

The cooldown, long-interval between damage, lack of defensive or healing skills, and fact that it makes you a giant target all make it a pretty lackluster and situational elite. If it stopped boosting damage, I don’t think many of us would ever use it.

Requiring a target only addresses cases where a warrior is running away from you. The OP’s scenario was a warrior chasing him down. The problem is that warrior has too many mobility skills with relatively low cool-downs, particularly with a greatsword equipped.

This would make sense if the profession required melee range, but the ability to swap to several different ranged weapons eliminates much of the need for mobility.

I cannot speak for other professions, since only my ele is an asura, but most of my heavy-hitting spells (e.g., churning earth and meteor storm) have visual cues beyond mere hand/body movements. They’re painfully obvious, in fact.

3. Target selection. Have fun with clicking between minions/pets/turrets/clones/NPC/large player models. Oh, you trying to tab target? Too bad, here’s your pets/minions/clones/…

That problem is not specific to player race. I definitely wish targeting priority was smarter or at least configurable.
