I understand “adjusting” the decay timer for participation but wow, can’t even get from one camp to another without losing a tier. If you wait for a timer, rip pips. It’s decays far too fast. There I said it.
Seems that union for the guards at hills is not happy about the survivor’s death benefits. The guards are destroying all the cannons, oils and mortars as they respawn. Seems we are in need of a really good negotiator to stop this unrest. Anyone on Anet staff good at negotiations?
….and in my group were 5 ranger in total. We rekt every thief with Rapid Fire… I don’t get.
Really? Need we spell this out for you?
You guys are missing what I consider two important things. One: Yishis is an outstanding thief and two: strength runes are very pricey. I’ve muddled with this concept before and I came up with this
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAqYVlsMp5pdPxwJ0PNBNhwdsaz8O83yaFA-TFiFwAk1HwXJIgTBAVlfz2fgl6PBeAAJOCAkBQfBA-w
You can always change out shadow protector for cloaked in shadow but in my experience, the blind doesn’t have all that great of an effect for ranged. And the extra heal stat can be used to your advantage.
yeah i get this problem in wvw as well. Anyone know how to fic this?
Stop looking towards the heavens for divine intervention. It ain’t coming.
Just because he wants to use p/d doesn’t mean he is/wants a condi build. The plain fact is condi build for thief is OK but everyone and their pet has condi cleanse and reduction food. Other players also drop a lot of aoe around themselves to gain an advantage on thieves but if one is ranged, this can be easily avoided. This is the p/d power build i use wvw
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAqYVlsMpypdPx0J8PNBNhwdtYz8O83yaFA-TFCBABCu/wAHBgzUCilyPAeAApoPYiTBgOq/QGA9JA-w
mostly because I have latency problems and I just love c&d. Yes I have used this in spvp and got a lot of qq because of c&d and being ranged out of the aoe’s.
WOW!!! What a blast from the past!
From what you said op sounds like you are getting hit by caltrops.
Ummm no. Look at the date of original post. Culling was the big issue back then. One could c&d, bs and hammer away for 2 cycles of #1 skill before the target could see who was attacking.
The changes to rangers has brought the trolls out in droves. First it was the ability to still hit a cloaked target, 4 sec reveal now is 6 secs and the speed increase on LB. Really? If you don’t want ppl to use cloak, take it out of the game. Don’t make it a survivability tool. As for me, this is a game breaker. Time to move on.
I would like to help the thief as the only thing I know about guardians is how to bring them down. And, well, I’ve been p/d for at least a year now.
Dude, ditch the d/d. As pretty as death blossom looks, it’s not worth it. Besides, you missed on a lot of them. You can use d/p as an escape mechanism much more effectively. Thieves guild is powerful but you have to ask yourself, is the cd worth it. IMHO it isn’t. Basilisk venom has a much shorter cd and interrupts. The use of or the actual lack of, cloak and dagger is pitiful. I’m sure other thieves are cringing somewhere. Blinding and breaking target locks is how we survive to stomp with full hp.
This is my current condi build
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAqYVl0Mp0pdPxyJ8PNBNRxdNsCzg3XxXshaFAA-TVSAABFu/gBHBgc0HI9JAAgDBASq/MpSQLeAAjp8jQALWDA-w
No. I don’t always roll condi. Sometimes I switch it up for a power version of p/d, especially when our commanders are zerging a havoc group.
The thing with this build is, you drop 6 – 8 conditions on target with first spam. Most can cleanse 3 or 4, except necro who can chomp all of them at once but then has to wait for his heal cd. The sigil of ice is actually a lot more useful then one might think. It procs at the weirdest and most inopportune times. I recall a mesmer that was trying to desperately get away, dropped veil and boom, chilled. They died beside the veil.
And finally to op. If this was a duel, why did you stomp?
Try this.
I use this very successfully. At the moment I’m playing with zerker trinkets for neck and rings to get more up front damage to counter the diamond skin eles.
These are my 2 current builds i roam with;
backstab;
condition;
@ Viking Jorun, sorry but I’m not seeing any benefit to your build. If it works for you, more power to you.
Being a solo roamer myself, I feel your pain. A few tweaks i would recommend are:
a) in critical strikes go III instead of I permanent 7%;
b) acrobatics go III for the vigor/extra dodges;
c) switch blinding powder for infiltrator’s signet, gives an extra “steal”; and
d) I prefer basilik poison to interrupt their heal.
This is my backstab build:
That being said, I am now enjoying a condition build. I will admit it’s a dance for sure and doesn’t have the quick gratification of the bs build but I do survive better and have been known to win a lot 1 v 2/3 and sometimes 4. And those healing types usually make a dash for it. I wish there was a viable s/x condition set but dancing dagger gets the job done.
This is my condition build:
So I sat here and banged out my opinion on the forecasted nerfs. Reread it. Was about to post it. Then I thought, they don’t care. Saw it in the past. Was the reason I stopped playing gw1. Looks like history is going to repeat itself. They didn’t learn from the first go ‘round and I’m probably going to quit. I’m sure the above average to poor players are going to be happier knowing another thief is thinking about quitting.
Edit: You may want to get someone to re-write this as evasion and stealth will be a thing of the past
(edited by Bern.9613)
Thief:
One of the issues we are working on for thieves this patch is the dependence on the traits which boost initiative.
FYI thief needs initiative to use any weapon skill and as a result use on average 2 skills, 3 depending on his weapon choice, while others can pop 4+ onto that same thief.
We have also somewhat reduced the effectiveness of high evasion thieves by reducing vigor up time…
Wouldn’t want a thief to be evasive because the average thief has such high hp and armor
This prevents these thieves from evading too much and too easily dealing with being disabled (stun, daze, fear, knockdown, etc.).
Yea because thieves have soooo many skills with stability and stun break.
Also we are trying to improve the survivability of thieves in the Acrobatics line through easier access to the Hard to Catch trait
Which seems an oxymoron concidering what the sentence just prior to this is implying.
This will reward thieves who are actively engaged in the fight rather than those who are just dodging over and over again.
Huh?
This should keep thieves from being able to recharge all of their power
Well what’s the point of going into combat then? Cannon fodder?
We felt that using a lot of different abilities to maintain stealth is ok
It’s “ok”? Really?
I recall a state of the game video where a dev said a thief is suppose to be slippery and fast on the battlefield. What happened to him? Is he living out of a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere. I have seen mesmers that can out cloak a thief, warriors that outrun everyone, eles that put out more dps, rangers that can block almost everything and nobody is susceptible to basilik poison. In short, a thief is becoming worse then lvl ups in the zerg/group and laughable if they want to roam. So what’s the end game for the thief? Just cut to the bottom line because this is agonizing.
OMG it won’t let me edit link out. I removed it. And ty for reply.

Is this real? It also has the gw2 logo on top. News to me that I’m selling my account. I’m pretty confused atm. I want to respond but I don’t want to open a door for whoever.

I’m not seeing an upside to this week in wvw. I vote we boycott this match up, allow sor to take everything so that their wxp/karma/bag farming train ends. Not like fa nor db can match thier numbers. Individually they are extremely easy to kill in 1 v 1 or 2 fights. Problem is, they know this and run in mega zergs.
I don’t know how TC is following and hitting cloaked thieves/mesmers but I’m calling you out on it.
Don’t be predictable and you won’t eat a faceful of ouch.
Predictable? I was being chased on the east side by the skill point. At the N entrance headed towards our N supply, I BS + HS away from them, turned and ran through them using hide in shadows on the back side of them and into the mob infested skill point. They u-turned and followed me in to the skill point, off the ledge at which point I wp’d because it was getting really stupid. This is not just me. Others have had similar experiences with TC. So by your account FA is full of kittens or…….
I don’t know how TC is following and hitting cloaked thieves/mesmers but I’m calling you out on it.
Welcome to the world Jimmy!!
FYI The thief is the assassin in the game. So yea, you gonna die
Because you’re not a rocket scientist. You forgot to incorporate you’re relative position on the map and the time of day ;-) <—— LOL No idea how to activate smiles.
The thing about taking a necro out is knowing when to bail to reset your utility skills.
When a necro goes into death shroud (green smoke with the ring), their hp is usually doubled. That complimented by the bleed, chilled, blind and life stealing skills, you have to watch your hp and speed. Good news is, they don’t stay like that forever so as long as you shadow them, they won’t heal all that much and then you can take him down. Just remember to avoid the marks and force him to fire his marks/wells at a distance. Remember, shadowstep and steal are great gap closers and add to the confusion as to where a thief is.
So the thing about 1 in X number chance to get something is, every time you click an event coffer/box/item/whatever, you reset the chance. Case and point. I saved up 100 coffers, zip; 250 coffers, zip; 1 coffer, weapon ticket. True story. After opening 250 in a row and nothing but candy to make me sick (asurans are hilarious) I started to open each one as I got them.
So to those that are saving thousands upon thousands thinking their chances to get tickets/wings/minis have increased. Ummmm no. Think of it as rolling dice and not playing BINGO. Each time you roll the dice, you pick them up and roll again.
Sorry to burst your bubble bud but that’s the truth of the matter.
We are very enjoy the party.
I was there for the garrison fight. We had sooooooo many holes in the walls and gates, bg to the west, jq to the east. And they just kept on pouring in. Non-stop for the time I was there. TBH I have no idea how we held out but dang, we, DB, were good! That has to be our best stand off to date. Would be nice if we had more ppl show up to even out the numbers. I have yet to see one of our zergs create yellow swords on the map during NA time.
Wahahaha took you long enough and you needed help from sbi.
Dear Diary;
Week 1, new wvwvw build.
Seems that a percentage of the player base is unhappy. . .
Poor Devon, trying his hardest to make wvw fresh and new for all. Well I think I may have a compromise. Personally I like the new shake up and there are those that will agree and disagree. The old saying, can’t please 100% of the ppl 100% of the time. So here’s my proposal. Two weeks with the roll of the dice and 2 weeks of tier based. Here’s my train of thought.
The new system is great because it gets the lower and higher ranked servers out of the same old scrap week after week. It also allows a lower rank to close with and engage a higher ranked server learning new tactics or revisiting old. This system also allows rank progression. Have a look at SoS, +3!! Way to go guys!! The old system was good in the fact that most servers were evenly matched.
I’m not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination so I have no idea if this could easily be implemented. I do know that if you can think it, it can be done. All we need is one guy to say, yea, you know what, I think I can do that.
P.S. I thought about starting a thread but this seemed to be an appropriate thread instead of starting another about the same thing.
I’ve seen this as well. Seems that a whole battle field is covered at the same time and when one moves so does the ac. If it’s legit, how are they doing it? I can’t seem to achieve it. I watch the target and shoot in front of their projected path hoping to hit or drop it in the middle of the zerg. Either way, I’m waiting on cd to fire again. And my indicated ground circles are not uniform in distance. On my screen, the ac moves 3/8th to 1/2 in every shot leaving a trail of red circles/arrows behind me. So yea, what’s up with that?
LOL, and before I see “screenie or it didn’t happen”, I’m busy running. And FYI weebles wooble. But they don’t fall down.
(edited by Bern.9613)
Retaliation is sometimes funny. . . You encounter a thief and tries assassinate you under 5 seconds. Then the thief realizes that the ground is slippery. . .
so he switches to his sword/dagger and. . .
I’m guessing stealth, thief burst damage and confusion has been nerfed to an “acceptable” lvl for the majority and now retaliation is the next on the “things to be nerfed” list? This is laughable.
I’m thinking ANet should put some thought into making another part to the game. We already have pve which is visually stunning hence the drop in fps. (There has to be some way of preserving all the work that went into creating the world and increasing the fps at user’s end.) And of course wvw/spvp. Here’s where ANet can copy paste their time and efforts but ppl that go to the “kitten vs kitten” can scrap it out but never die!!
Yep, they can go at it until 1 is in a downed state but never die. The downed player gets a 2 min god mode in which they can revive and seek revenge upon the offender that put them down.
A couple of things I wish to address.
First: medium armour.
Yep engineer and ranger fall within this armour class. Tell me, how do they feel about it? I hear/see so often how they’re getting owned and they’re more support/ranged classes not an in your face warrior class.
Second: toughness through armour and/or traits.
Been there, done that. Didn’t like the results tbh. I found I died more with more toughness and less power/attack. Played with my traits and armour and have finally settled for 17.5k hp, 1.9k armour, 3.2k attack (not clear if this includes sigil and rune), 51% crit rate and 107% crit damage, base. No consumables, no buffs. My biggest problem is the bunker/heal every second skill ele and the hundred and one clones mesmers. OMG, where do they come from? Are they parachuted in?
Third: perma-stealth.
I admit that I will use perma-stealth tactics. Use it for intel. Easily sustainable, hard to hide effects. Thing you have to remember is, perma-stealth = perma-not attacking. As for using stealth to make my get away. Well, excuse me! Next time I see a 10 man plus zerg hell bent on ripping me a new one, I’ll just stop, turn around and wave. Maybe all the thieves will. Hopefully when we do, ANet will adorn the thief with;
“Mass Confusion: Waving at a group of chasing enemies will cause them to turn onto each other until only one remains. This skill will cancel the urge to use stealth.”
There you go, problem solved. Thief no longer requires stealth to make a clean get away.
Edit: OMG, how could I have forgotten;
“Shout Leeeeeeeroy Jenkins: Turn and run abashedly into the chasing enemies. This may or may not result in death depending on how fast enemy can wipe tears of laughter from their eyes and will cancel all attempts to stealth.”
(edited by Bern.9613)
If I was Anet, I would implement another “counter” to stealth as a kind of area effect….
…Also I would make a tower upgrade that partly reveals stealth in an area arround the tower. Like Deniara Devious suggested. The stealthed character would appear as a s transparent shimmer within the area….
I will speak on behalf of the thief as my main is one. A thief will not survive an aoe barrage because it has the lowest hp, toughness, survivability of ALL of the warrior classes. They do this because to survive is to eliminate the target before it has a chance to eliminate you. High, fast dps. So unless you’re also suggesting that ANet ups the stats of the thief….
Same goes for D/P Thieves if you stand in the field they can’t finish the combo with Heartseeker and if they do, they will hit you and get revealed.
Black Powder + 1 Heartseeker = 3 – 4 sec stealth hit or no hit
The misinformation that is spread is boundless. All aoe stealth skills have a tell tale sign. All of them. Mesmer’s has a wave effect, thief’s has smoke and/or a blast of some sort.
Basilisk Venom + Black Powder + Heartseeker + Back stab = great introduction from a D/P thief
Once again someone is frustrated about a certain tactic so it’s off to the forums to….. The point in fact is we all deal with this. Why can’t they adapt and overcome? Why do they look for the easy way out by changing the “rules”? I’m curious as to how the original programmers feel about their efforts going to kitten in a hand basket.
Actually i meant unbalanced compared to the other keeps.
Unbalanced? OK, I’ll buy that for a buck. It is the northern keep, third place in the match-up so maybe they should have a little defensive advantage. I’m sure if one does a proper recon, one can find a defilade firing position.
Edit: Hmmm, this is starting to sound too military for a fantasy mmo. Sorry about that. Old habits I guess.
(edited by Bern.9613)
It’s called trajectory. A mortar is a high trajectory, low velocity round. The one on the inner wall has the height of placement and angle of elevation to reach the vista.
Edit: Really? When you encounter something you don’t like, it’s overpowered? That’s all you have for depth of thought and game play?
(edited by Bern.9613)
Make a fool of yourself by defending this.
That was an average thief. He could have stomped the commander by using shadow step to avoid the aoes. That said, he is, in fact, op as the “zerg” ball were/are mindless/clueless (at the end of the video the thief was standing right in the center of them and still manages to get away) and therefore out classed. To the video’s author, well done dude. Next time hit “F” to start the stomp, shadow step away then just prior to finishing stomp, return.
Question @ Kabooky: Are you the commander or one of the clueless bunch?
It’s amazing how everyone makes it seem that the thief is the ONLY one with stealth and therefore requires yet another nerf. Seriously? All the “I can’t play my class so nerf that thief that killed me” threads has resulted in a number of compliant nerfs. If this keeps up, as mentioned before, the thief will be extinct. It’s already on the endangered class list. Allow me to relay what happened to me yesterday.
I was on my thief helping a friend get a wolf. We ran into a warrior that was trying to turn a camp. We engaged. I was in the process of stomping when out of nowhere comes 4 ppl, one of which was a mesmer. Yea, he had cloaked the group and they all attacked me, the thief, ignoring my friend. Fair enough, good move. After getting the wolf, finally, I switched over to my baby mesmer. All of lvl 60.
Running to catch the zerg ball, I was interrupted by a lvl 80 thief. The thing that saddens me is, I downed him. With my uber lvl 20 to 50 gear, including weapons, this poor guy went down. I didn’t have the heart to stomp him and he returned the favour with a bow. The point is, why? Why can a lvl up mesmer, with zip for gear. down a thief? Was he bad at the class? Maybe. Mediocre gear? Probably rare, at the very least lvl 80. Still, he should have been able to kill me.
Do you really want to see the thief class disappear? Who do you think sends intel to commanders, ninjas that last 10 supplies to close a wall or finish that treb? Who runs and recaptures the supply camp, kills the dolyaks to deny the enemy supplies? Yea, sure, other classes can do it but don’t you want them remain with the zerg ball?
Players, Anet, think about what you’re asking/doing to the class. I made a mesmer to better understand the class but it’s increasingly hard not to be thinking my thief will be retired to pve, deleted or I’ll just move to another mmo. I’m sure I’m not the only one contemplating this.
Thief/mesmer, or rather the stealth ability.
I can’t remember how many times the whole army is held by a single stealth invader, and the commander had to tell us to leave the thief/mesmer alone and move on. All you see is a bunch of people hitting the air and the stealth invader just appears/disappears and suddendly you see one of your guys dead. Then more guys died trying to rez the downed. All because of 1 invader. Tell me that is not OP :P.
OK. That’s not OP. That’s lack of discipline.
…and the commander had to tell us to leave the thief/mesmer alone and move on…
It’s this kind of zergling that gets killed, draws others to him, gets them killed by a thief then starts the “QQ nerf stealth” thread. Don’t blame the thief nor his abilities because you lack the discipline to stay with the group. FYI, I have used the hate of the thief to pull ppl out of zerg balls into ambushes set around corners. It’s always too funny and too predictable.
My advice. You run with a group/zerg stay with them, achieve the objective or suffer the consequences of going solo/deviating from the plan.
…and suddendly you see one of your guys dead…
(edited by Bern.9613)
Rohbi has a valid point. Get over it and yourselves. You don’t like the guilds on DB or the times they play? Then maneuver your score so you don’t come into competition with DB or stay pve/spvp.
Is there any way we can have a separate thread for scores, good will/fight and normal ppl to post on? This is tiresome and I, for one, am quite surprised we aren’t on “take 4” or “5”.
ah the good ol PvF we have grown to love from mag. where are the flame rams in camps and the middle of no where? I fear mag is losing their kewl so sad.
Be careful. They’ll zerg up and roll ya.
I know we’re apparently the troll server (no idea how THAT happened)
How big was the one that got away?
It took 7 days to accrue 5 pages when it was DB/YB/SoS. Three pages and counting, 40 hrs later, with Mag in the mix. Really wish this would stop. So many useless posts to sift through.
Chewy, check out all those thief haters. Yea, the thief has been nerfed and kittened over something awful. Did they get extra hp, toughness, def to compensate for the lose of some skill’s effects, the addition of longer debuffs, the lose of passive durations? Do the thieves roll over and die? Nope. Why? Because we love to strike fear and terror into your very soul.
If you’re not impressed with the fact that we can stay hidden and retake a tower, ummmm don’t watch. If you don’t have anything constructive to contribute, ummmm don’t post. It’s a simple concept actually. But it does require discipline. Which soooo many of you have already proven you don’t have. The proof will be any vids that appear and/or the flaming that will ensue.
That said, I don’t have any way of videoing my adventures. Not that I can beat 30 secs.
So I took the time to watch the video posted by the OP. The thief discussion actually starts at 57:30. True, there will be a reveal buff but he forgot to mention that there will be added condition duration, maybe a burning arrow and more movement skills on weapons other then SB, allowing the thief to be “slippery to catch” (not my words). So, escape and evade, hit and run will be easier allowing a thief to survive a sustained engagement. This will also allow for the use of two different weapon sets, not one with sb as a backup. Be prepared to see d/d, sb thief replacing it for d/d, d/p.
Well.
If you can.
Edit: They also mentioned turning down Mug damage. Meh. I personally gave up Mug for Bountiful Thief. Nothing funnier then seeing a boon driven player having one or two of them ripped away.

Farout.8207But snipers rely on hiding and not being seen.
How little you know of the sniper. A sniper does not hide. They become one with the surrounding environment. They are highly trained, highly motivated individuals, who can sustain themselves for extended periods of time… etc
I am actually retired Army so I do know a little about the military and the various tactics that are employed. I would personally consider putting on a ghillie suit so the sniper can “become one with the surrounding environment” to be a form of hiding but you sure set me straight. You are obviously the expert on all things sniper.
Once again, I have been proven to be in error to use an analogy from my personal life. For this I apologize to the others involved in this thread. Let us stay on the topic of the stealth nerf in game.
Farout.8207But snipers rely on hiding and not being seen.

Sunflowers.1729I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic,
No sarcasm intended. Those that stick to thief have to be convicted and adaptive. There are no choices here. That’s why a lot start a thief and eventually delete it.
Sorry about the format. I have no idea how to quote other posts :-)
Edit: holska!! Thank you :-)
(edited by Bern.9613)
Glad the kittens are all happy about this. I wonder what the person who created/coded the thief thinks of all this.
You seem to forget the things that ANet can’t nerf. The power of conviction and the ability to adapt and overcome. Those that play thief are experts at it. Think of the thief as a sniper. The most feared and hated element on the battlefield.
I leave you with the first line of a sniper’s poem;
I am the hand of God. I deal in fate.
I read most of these posts and still people going on about thieves. This is why we love being thieves. We strike fear into your very soul.
Sleep with one eye open,
Clutching your pillow tight.
Personally, I would like to be cloaked longer then the cool down but meh. I do want to thank all of you “nerf the stealth” people. It has changed my approach to wvw. I very rarely run with a zerg now. Instead I go to where people are lvling their alts, farming and map completionist. Yea, that’s right. I troll the hell out of the badge baits. It’s hilarious.
I start off with the ever boring but highly entertaining steal, back stab, heart seeker, c&d, stomp, shadow refugee. Then let the trolling begin. Switch to sword/dagger and shadow step the hell out of the guy ressing. Wahahahaha way too funny. And you see, no more of stealth. I hope my efforts are helping your cause.
And here we go again with “nerf the thief”. Thieves are the one melee/warrior class with the lowest hp, tough/def in the game. Stealth DOES NOT mitigate damage. You want a GW1 thief, I’m all for it. You think the thief is op now? Should have been in GW1 when it was introduced.
You want to get rid of stealth? Fine. Increase the hp, tough/def of the thief and then make it across the board so NOBODY can disappear from sight. Means no more prestige, ride lightning, lightning reflexes, mist form, etc, etc, etc.
While we’re at it, I think hundred blades, earth shaker, ring of warding, wave of wrath are op’d and should be removed from the game. No wait, I’ve adapted a strategy to overcome those. Meh, still, please remove these from the game. I think they’re op’d.
