WvW survey: defining the meta.

I don’t quite understand the way the survey is set up.

The role of each profession is already defined by you at the top of page. But that role is not all that accurate. Mesmer is defined as single target dps, but it is more used for boon share. Ele is listed as backline dps but it can also serve as a frontline/midline support. Rev is listed as backline dps as well but it is fully capable of being a frontline.

I recon there is more build variety (ex ele being backline or frontline). The issue is that I cannot make a survey for a class with people answering in different ways depending on the build they have in mind.
I have therefore briefly described the build people are surveying for, to make sure what they are voting for.
In the future I could make a survey with more variety (like 2 sections for ele: one for frontline and one for backline), but in this survey I preferred to go 1 class 1 build.

Since the last updates and the posts about future ones, WvW is becoming popular again. Meanwhile, Metabattle (and any other public build database) hasn’t been updated, as a consequence of the lack of admins and of the past long decline of WvW.

I have therefore created a general survey to define the current meta. As you start the survey, you will understand that it does not aim to produce precise meta builds (since WvW builds are influenced by own preferences more than it any other game mode) but more to understand the general aspects of such builds. This data will then be analyzed by WvW specialists and transformed into builds which will be pubicly available.

More information can be found in the first part of the survey.

Your gif shows the points after consumption, but not what you had before.

When you gain a Hero point there is an animation on the Hero panel and then there is a red sign on it sayng you have new hero points to spend. Anyway, here is a more precise gyf showing the problem https://gfycat.com/SplendidGrouchyGrackle

Mesmer’s trait Duelist’s Discipline works only for Magic Bullet but not for Phantasmal Duelist (which would benefit much more). It is a foundamental trait to make signet mesmer viable.

Later down the line they implemented soloque. Random maps were in too, not sure when it was put in. Soloque was in my opinion the best thing to ever happen to GW2 pvp. I went from playing 2-3 hours every day to 5-6. And while it shared the same issues as the previous que people actually cared about it. I remember looking up my stats on gw2stats and going ultra tryhard mode if I was ever close to losing my top 100 placement or 60% winratio.
I also remember feeling happy about getting r1 the time I did it as a mesmer since I was the first one to do it. This was the only time I ever cared about achieveing anything within the system of GW2.
Then a new problem appeared in soloque. It was skyhammer. This killed the game for a lot of players, silly as it might sound. This map simply was not GW2. Sometimes I’d shut down the game after I had cleared up an entire day just to play gw2 just because I had a horrible 500-0 skyhammer game.
People protested daily about skyhammer… everywhere. Top players, forums, everywhere. everyone hated on skyhammer for what I belive was almost half a year. To fix it arenanet completely revamped the map system to its current vote system. When they did that they also removed soloq (:<<<<<) and merged the leaderboards of teamq and soloq (kinda butchered my stats lol)
Right now the leaderboards have not even been on my mind since I started writing this thread, nor do I know anyone that cares about them. They were remade once again not too long ago and apparently people placing in the top ratings get a llama and the top is reached by spamming games, win or loss. This is fairly easy to see if you just look at the leaderboards and see people such as ‘’face of angel’’ being rank 13 wih a winratio of 46.95% above my teammate ’’zan’’ who is ranked 22 with 71.61% winratio (700 games)
Nothing has really been done with the leaderboards for a really long time. The general pattern suggests that we’ll have a rework once again. It might lead to someting good and it might not but the problem is that I’m now 7k games into this game and there is still no proper system at all for PVP.
The following problems that were an issue kitten near a year ago are still an issue now
There is no room for the casual competitive/soloque player. They simply have no space where they can compete. Theoretically if you want to get competitive as a soloq player the best you’ll get is getting trounced by premades at the high end of MMR while getting the exact same rewards you got when you started. You either enter pvp for your daily, play the game strictly for its combat or play at the top end for money.
I actually happened to speak with an old teammate of mine, Lowell, who left GW2 after we broke off and went to heroes of the storm. Random fun fact, he is playing for fnatic and doing quite well for himself. He said that he tried to return to gw2 multiple times just to play it casually when he has nothing to do but despite WANTING to get back into the game he simply has no space to be in. I’ll bet a bifrost that he isnt the only one.
The reason this irks me is that they could have literally taken their first system (or in my preference, the last one) and just done a couple of improvements to it and they’d literally be there. Instead we keep reworking, testing for months and reaching nowhere only to constantly rework again. Something as basic as the PVP infrastructure should not take this long to fix and the game could have had so much more people if it wasnt so shafted in this department.
Now with the release of hots we’ll have a chance of getting a large new influx of players, especially since you dont need to lvl for pvp. But these people are going to either be achievement farmers or lost players if they wont have any space to play in. Not everyone shares our passion enough to compete in what basically is a unfinished system for years.
This vent went on for like.. FIVE TIMES longer than I expected. Sorry, I’ll hire an editor.
I want to clarify again that I respect the PVP team in gw2 and I know how hard they work and how they feel for the game. I just wanted to air out my concerns.

This thread appeared on Reddit and I thought it discuss a foundamental problem of the current PvP status, so here it is:

So there was an article I’m sure everyone is aware of explaining the experimental process arenanet tends to release items, updates and content. When I read it I got pretty worried because I feel like we are still stuck in this endless loop where the infastructure is never actually reaching an acceptable standard.
I definitely agree with the concern that arenanet tends to take a system, implement it hap-hazardly and then forget about it, only to constantly remake it, repeating the same process.
Something that I want to clarify before I go any further is that I love this game. I have 5177 hours across all my characters and 7003 PVP games on my mesmer and I’ve been playing competitively in it since the beta with absolutely no monetary rewards for doing so half along the way. Only recently did we actually get paid for being top end players and we’ve still stuck around because we love the combat and the gameplay.
I believe the entire infastructure for PVP is the best example of the lack of a clear goal in development. If you have not been around in pvp since the get go you really wouldnt believe the amount of insane reworks that have occured.
Here is the rundown of all the changes and systems. I should add that some of the details of when and exactly how everything worked might be a bit skewed because A LOT of changes have occured and it’s been a while ago.
The beginning: In the very start of PVP there were only ‘’free tournament’’ and hotjoin. There was no other form of matchmaking other than free tournament which had absolutely no rating system, no leaderbords, no nothing. When you won a free tournament you unlocked a paid tournament token. IIRC, you could either buy these from the gemstore or save up 5 of them to enter the matchmaking of the paid tournament system which was introduced a few months later.
This system gave you better loot and gems if you placed in the top. You actually got a crapload of gems and people that farmed it consistently could basically get any item they wanted to. Additionally, you also got a ‘’Qualification point’‘. There was a leaderboard tracking the people with the top QPs. (you only got 1 for winning). This was the birth of the competitive scene in GW2, competitive teams would join the same teamspeak at a set time and all q for the tournament together, guaranteeing a competitive enviroment.
I should add that the map system was always forest, legacy, kyhlo. The paid tournaments worked in the way that 8 teams that paid got in the que and it would basically be an automated tournament in the game.
Eventually, the gems were removed because it was too lucerative and didnt really provide any goldsink. Moreover, the map system changed. Every week (or two weeks, cant remember), one map was selected which was the ONLY map for tournament play, free or paid. Needless to say, it got old, quick.
Somewhere during this time they also changed qualification points from 1 to top placers to 5 for top placers and 2 for 2nd place. The whole ticket system was also completely scrapped.
The system kind of broke down when a bounch of players would wait until ~00:00 to go into matches just to farm QPs. It did not matter if you beat the best team or a compilation of randoms, you’d still get +5 QPs. The leaderboard of QPs (which was not automatically updated but rather a forumpost) got a little ridicilous with certain players having around 2k QPs vs other players who might have been better players having somewhere in the likes of 700.
The idea behind the QPS werent fully revealed, but it seems like everyone had a tournament in mind for it. This never happened, instead of that they announced that they’d scrap the QP system, give titles to the top.. 20? placements (I’m a master of the arena which IIRC was given to top 10 placements)
This is when the first iteration of leaderboards were released. With rating and stuff. It was extremely confusing as I remember Denshee being rank 1 by only solqueing while having a 50% winratio, meanwhile his teammate at the time battosai had a 90% winratio having only played with his team. The only difference was the amount of games.
There were a couple of problems with the leaderboards. Mainly the fact that being rated at the lowest rating in the world and winning a game gave the exact same rewards as being rank 1 and doing so. No real incentive to climb. Furhermore, there was no soloque. The worst problem of all was when people realized there was absolutely no decay. Meaning that after you became rank 1 you were rank 1 for basically forever. If anyone ever overtook you all you had to do was play one game, win or lose, and you’d be back at r1.

The new toolbelt skill associated to Supply Crate is great, except for the fact that the 6 healing suppleis are small, randomly placed and their small radius makes you lose time walking around to catch them. I really like the fact that they are in theme with the supplies, you drop both of them, but this worsen the effectiveness.

  • Make it a big single drop
  • Make it an AoE skill
  • Make it heal immediatly but leave the coo animation.

Matchmarking

We all know it’s broken.
You daily findy ourself in matches with 4 Shoutbow and 1 DD ele, full premade vs ull pugs, 5 turret engi vs 5 thieves. People ragequit without consequences. It is too annoying to be in such a wonderful game. It’s a problem that needs to be adresses.

  • The meta is really fix, a computer could easily recognize builds and sort them in an intelligent way. (Shoutbow and Killshots warrior are two different things, you can’t calculate them as the same thing. Same for Fresh Air or DD ele)
  • How can you still put premades against randoms. Also you can’t think that two small premades equal a big premade. There is a huge gap because of the lack of communication between the two separate groups
  • Anet stated they were going to be serious on toxic pvp behavior. People ragequitting is still a common thing.

Please change something. At least explain why this current situation is so bad.

Guild chat NEW bug

I know about the recent guild chat bug that you can fix by going Offline and Online but I’m experiencing a new bug.
I have multipel guilds and one has the chat completely broken: I can’t ready anything and anything I type doesn’t appear. I have this bug only for ONE guild, the others work fine.
I’ve tried anything. restarting client and computer, leaving and joining the guild, going Offline and Online but nothing works.

Is this happening only to me and should I send a ticket or is it a common bug and a fix is coming soon?

For those complaining about it using the same queue as conquest you can get your 5 votes and have a 50% chance or more to get the map.

Give it its own queue, everyone will want to play it as it comes out, don’t add it to the normal map rotation.
Also, you said that this game mode will have different metas, but it’s really annoying to change your build on the match countdown since you won’t be able to know which map you’re playing BEFORE.

For those complaining that it’s 5vs5 and can’t become some kind of GvG, you can get your own arena and make it 10 vs 10.

I’ve been in many servers and never had such a permanent lag, since I’ve joined Gandara 2 weeks ago I’ve been having permanent lag on every border. Other players have recognized this issue and it’s making it impossible to play in a good way.

If you queue, then leave the queue you don’t actually leave it.
I’ve left the queue, then joined a party and tried to paly with them but it just doesn’t work until you get your old queue ready and go for the match alone.

I don’t think mesmer often run gs / sword + focus right now. Staff / gs is the current mesmer meta, I think. At least until the patch hits and illusionary leap and warden are back in action.

I approve. However the necro bomb rotation is incorrect. Necros should place wells then go into deathshroud for +50% crit chance and use ds 5 then 4.
1 suggestion: include a link to meta builds.

The burst start by saying “Use all your wells, then…” I just didn’t link them because many people use many differents wells.
There is a link to Meta Builds on the Introduction.

QuickMouse is referring to the fact that Necro has a Grandmaster trait that gives a +50% crit chance boost in DeathShroud which is used by like everyone. That boost applies to the damage put out by the wells, like how eles drop meteor storm and then go tornado for the extra damage boost. You then use DS #5 to immob people while they are in your wells and also they can soak up your DS #4. That rotation isn’t made clear in the guide so it could be improved in this manner. Casting those other skills before going into DS after dropping your wells means you’re missing out on the crit boost.

Plague and Lich also give some power boosts to your wells.

  • Allow us to filter the maps before entering Solo and Team Queue.
  • Increase the penalties for afking or leaving the match before it ends.
  • Make the PvP scene more public, make ingames messages when big events such as ToL happen and make Sticky posts before they happen. It’s not that nobody likes PvP, people just don’t know how good it is.

WvW

  • Create an official GvG system. The community has been organizing guild vs guilf for two years bringing an extremely high competivie form of play for WvW players and yet there’s been no help from Anet. Making it more challenging and official would bring lots of players into the GvG scene. Streams the most interesting GvGs (TA going to NA was comparable to Tournament of Legends for the PvPers), create tournaments and an official Leaderboard.
  • Badges of Honor aren’t valuable as other rewards tokens, make something like PvP so that you actually know what you’re going to earn as you play.
  • Armor/Weapons acquired via Badges of Honors aren’t salvaigeable, this is a huge loss because you lose any sigil you put on it as you need to swap weapon or change build, and we’re talking about sigils of 10 gold each and runes even more expensive.
  • Defending isn’t worth it for the rewards you get. It’s not really a matter of gold/experience but more of points earned by your server. There should be a difference if a server is holding a T3 tower or a wooden tower.
  • Score: this has been an issue for ages and it’s really hard to solve. The main problem is that a server can win a matchup simply by having a night crew ticking 650 all nights and not having any good guilds/commanders

Hello, the purpose of this post is to regroup all the improvements that the community has asked since the first day of game.
There will be three separated categories: PvE, WvW and PvP. In case an improvement fits both fields it will always be put under PvE, in order to simplify the work.
This list will contain only popular and sensible ideas, it won’t be a personal way to complain and request something. You can contribute by adding a comment explaining how your idea could improve the game.
This is a completely unofficial post, expect Anet to read it but not to satisfy every request made. I hope that it will bring some order in the communication between community and devs and that will help them knowing what we, as a community, want to enjoy more this awesome game.

PvE

  • Better filter for the Trading Post wich allows you to search betwenn Ligh, Medium and Heavy armor.
  • Knowing wich crafting profession you have unlocked on your character without having to actually select it and lose time on screen charging time.
  • Account bound bag, this way buying items such as infinite gathering tools and Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic would make more sense for those who use more than one character.
  • Add more values to the Account Wallet. It’s been an excellent feature but it still isn’t used as its best, an example is having events tokens being an item and not in the wallet, getting back in the game of months.
  • Use All, when you find yourself with stack of Luck, Karma consumables or any other Bag you have to click them one by one wich can be very painfull when you get multiple stacks of 250 items.
  • Saving builds: this is a feature that was on Guild Wars 1, basically it allows you to save a build and change it with one click. Right now you have to change everything manually step by step. It would save huge amounts of time.
  • Autolooter: I don’t see why this is considered an hack, you would take your bags manually anyway or you can just blind a key for Area Loot and spam it as you go, autolooter would take automatically all the loot you make.
  • In dungeons add a quest tracker for incomplete dungeon paths, so you know which you need to do before given a choice.
  • Add more options for the vendor’s mass-sell: Sell Whites, Sell Blues instead of the
    simple Sell Junk.
  • Personal chat: some people like to chat with only some friends but this is not possible, it would also improve other for of organziation such as a Commander Chat in WvW, or a Guilds Leaders chat.
  • Ingame Moderators: it would scare people much more by knowing that some superheores are watching Tyria to make sure nobody is doign anything bad. If you get more than 5 reports in a period of time for the same issue it means that there actually is a problem to solve.
  • Dungeon Exploiting: This is an issue that has been going on for ages, Anet fix an exploit and people already have a new one ready. Instead of addign invisible walls just make it that to finish the dungeon you have to kill all the bosses. Who cares if someone wants to explore the map in a different way
  • Many gems store items aren’t worth it because of the gem price, examples: Utility/Metabolic prime is average price of 24 gold, grants you 12 hour of a specific food, let’s say you want to buy the “most expensive” food ingame, wich is Bowl of Garlic Kale Sautee: 1.40 gold for 1 hour duration. 1.4 × 12 = 16.8 hold instead of 24. Even worse with the Upgrade Extractor.
  • Add first person view, nobody would be so stupid to use it on combat and having a terrible experience, the communtiy is asking for it in order to ejoy the game’s art.

I was expecting a nice creative build but… you run the same thing everyone else does. Except you do less damage because you’re using crappy runes. Pack/Strength would increase your backstabs by at least 1-2k. Meh. 5/10

Hey everysone, I made a short roaming video.

I tried to collect some interesting fights, you’ll notice that my build is quite tanky for a thief, that’s cause I prefer to slowly take down my opponents and I feel like you need more skills than pressing two buttons and killing your opponent.

My build might not be the best build ingame, but I like it, don’t comment that. I’d really enjoy any kind of constructive comment on how I could improve my skills, I already know I miss some Cloak and Dagger and that’s a waste of initiative.

I apologize for the quality of the video changing, I’m still looking for the best combination of video settings.

Experimental Turrets vs Incendiary Powder

W/ Celestial amulet, u can do 3.5K burns per crit on a 25% crit rating. Are the buffs from Alchemy XIII that good?

You’re just pushint towards the engineer condition meta.. what I posted here is a different build. Everything is explained on the video, I pick up Experimental Turrets also because it gives boons to your party, not only you. As said you can for sure get higher damage, but it’s not the point of this build.

FAQ:

Q: Is this the best build currently existing for engineers?
A: No, there isn’t a “best build” in pvp. It really depends on wich and how many enemies you are facing. This build if for sure an innovative and good build.

Q: Can I use this build in WvW/PvE?
A: In WvW your enemies will just run away and get out of the turrets range, the reason this build works in PvP is because any enemy want to cap the point so he won’t run away. For PvE this build do not assure you the highest damage you can get as an engineer, while you could use it for some solo content.

Q: I see your life is chaning during the video
A: That’s because sometimes I switch to Soldier amulet instead of Knight, it will reduce your overall DPS but you will become tankier, it really depends on what your team is running.

Q: Why aren’t you using Autotool Installation?
A: I prefer going for Accellerant-Packed Turrets, wich will damage and knocback enemies when the turrets explodes, making them self repairing would go against the idea of having a buff when they get destroied. I also noticed that in mostly every 1 vs 1 my turrets last until I kill my opponent.

Q: Why aren’t you using Fortified Turrets?
A: I feel like it’s not worth it as a grandmaster trait, you won’t really change the match by reflecting projectiles for 5 seconds. Also Rifled Turret Barrels is a much better replacement.

Q: Why Flame Turret if there’s no condition damage and not Rifle Turret?
A: Consider the 3 stack of might (17.5 seconds) that Flame Turret gives every 10 second, this mean that for 7.5 seconds I have 6 stacks of might wich will give me an overall dps higher than what Rifle Turret would do. Also the area blind and combo field smoke is really useful compared than Rifle Turret passive skill.

There are meta only for that map. The way CC dominates over skills is ridiculous, there’s no way that skills can win over CC on Skyhammer and I still can’t understand why it has been added to the pvp maps. Everything that comes at the end of a skyhammer match is half people raging because of CC domination and half people laughing because they actualyl were just pushing people out of the map, nobody says “kitten , I just had so much fun, this map is awesome!”. While going for team arena or solo arena you can’t even change map, and your party will rage at you if you leave and let them without one member.

Solutions:

  • Add invisible walls at the edge of the map.
  • Let people filter maps while searching for team/solo arena
  • Take down the map
