Burn guard is one of the most dangerous builds in solo Q.

This is so true. Lots of people forget the fact that meta builds are meta because they do well in a 5v5 preconstructed format. When you solo queue, you need a build that can carry more than anything, and sometimes it’s a build that isn’t meta. The sheep will deny it’s viability but anyone worth their salt will know to look out for it.

Nail on the head right here.

If i’m in solo queue, I have to hard carry. I gotta be the best damage out there. Right now, burn guardian fits that slot. It’s absolutely sickening how much damage it puts out in team fights, as well as complete rez denial.

I love how people keep trying to say DH is fine and falls off at later levels when the top player is a DH main and clearly doesn’t falloff at all.

There are more than 250 at the absolute minimum? Probably around 1,000 US players in pvp that are fairly active.

build pls just to be sure
i loved the burn guard but got too bored with it. also an ele can ruin your day and make you ineffective in team fight till your team focus them. so mainly as 1v1 on close or far.

Solo que? So you trynna tell us that you can carry with this build? Sounds too good to be true. Smells fishy but if it’s true then it might be worth a shot. But before I get into it, what is your medium framerate and ping while you do ranked, OP?

P.S.
It is unreal for just one reason that I do not find burn guard to be a real threat. If unchecked I will get burned, but cleansing the first batch of burn is enough to deal with them, at least from my experience.

I don’t have a mic, and I dont like to duo queue because i dont play nice with others. I did one pug tourney and that was enough for me when it comes to teams.

I only solo queue. Since season 1. Always been legendary, usually play necro, which i have 5k games with.

FPS is at minimum 30 in PVP, average of about 50 ping.

You literally got it in reverse, we were all on our mains, and when we saw a random pug team we all swapped to alt classes/meme builds. Hence the bunker guardian. Bunker guard isn’t actually good at anything, I just use it to meme.

In other words you use it to throw if you happen to lose. Only reason you swap to bunker (shout?) guard is if you legitimately thought it would counter that spec. Guess it worked out if OP found it problematic enough to talk about it.

Reread what you just said and hopefully you’ll realize how it makes 0 sense. I got on bunker because there is no way my AT team was going to lose to a bunch of randoms, so we’d rather have fun playing stupid builds(the burn build hes so proud of falls into that category btw) than meta specs. The game hes talking about ended 500-0 basically, and the result would have been the same regardless of what me or the people I was playing with were running. Your comment is actually stupid.

Meta builds are meta for a reason, and theres a reason why burn isn’t meta. Like how can anyone think of burn guardian as anything more of a meme, I could find more success playing 5 shout bunker guardian than he would playing burn guard. OP literally said it cant 1v1 thief, the one class that isn’t even meant to take 1v1s because it doesnt excell in it. One day the pvp community will understand the difference between a meta spec and a pugstomper spec. Pugstomper specs find great success killing BAD players who just eat your damage, but once you reach a level where everyone is actually running meta and is not braindead, you will keep losing till you drop rank to wherever you belong with the meme build that you think is so good.

You can say it’s “not meta”, but you run a complete condi-removal, boon bunker, quickness stacking comp. It was clear it was a planned comp, not just a “kitten around” comp.

I was also in a game with you in Ranked, where you were in your duo with Nos where we lost 495 – 500. It seemed to work pretty well in a game where the odds were more fair (5 pugs vs 5 people in Discord? of course we lost)

With a coordinated team, a burn guardian would do absolutely great. It doesn’t work so great when a coordinated 5 man team builds their team to counter you.

If a solo queue is added, this will be THE build. The only reason it isn’t “meta” is because people like you duo queue and swap characters to counter anyone you have a problem with.

Yeah it was literally a 5 man comp of condition removal. It was clear what the intention was when two of them changed characters.

They were stacking bunker/heal and condi removal.

I don’t know Naru. You talk awfully tough for someone who never queues alone. I’d like to see you try to solo queue a season and see where you end up in the ranking when you’re not in a team with chat…

I mean, I can travel with sword/leap from virtue pretty fine. Just gotta pay attention to map.

If i’m a little slow, i make up for that by the damage i bring when i arrive.

Condition is so kittening cancer it’s beyond ridiculous. I literally build my characters around condi denial and yet in some games when 5/5 enemy players are condi it’s still not enough. So dumb.

The reason it works so well is that unless you’re going against an organized team, the condi will find a way to work past your defenses eventually.

Unless you super focus the condi targets (necro, burn dh, condi thief) you drop pretty quickly.

Actually my last two games were 500 – 185, 501 – 95. I’ve won the last 5 games and i’m now sitting at rank 30, 1701. Plat 3 solo queue only baby!

the nerf of the dmg to the steal skill is way to penalizing on the thieves. it is killing it. from 4.5k to 1.4k, that’s like a nerf of 300%, its too heavy on the build now
please review it.

I see more thieves than any other profession in plat.

I have been playing the game for a few months now. So far i like the game even tho i dont like the combat style.

Been doing pvp every day since its rewarding, not gear depended and its what im looking for in a mmorpg mostly.

But there is one thing i dont understand here, i have seen many ppl doing 5 to 10k dmg regularly, even with condition dmg i can see ppl doing 5k per tick. I have tried builds from metabattle and tried out my own but i dont see this being possible with any build.

I have checked forums and everything, ppl say they do like 500-1k dmg with auto attack and about 2-3k with other attacks. thats about the same as mine with all toons and builds.

How comes ppl hit 5-10k+ in PVP if its not gear depended?

Might stacking and vuln stacking definitely helps. There are some warrior/mesmer builds that are gonna crush you pretty fast. Thief does a lot of power damage too.

Burn guardians can generally hit you with 3-10k ticks of burn on their own if you’re with your team.

Stealth then auto res whoever gets down. You cant do enough aoe to keep them from ressing.

Poison and CC can take care of that

I should have been clearer. I want to be able to end it early and reset my virtues immediately when I do so

I think the cast time of this ability is because it is already so strong. Imagine having an instant button that refreshes all virtues on an 84s cooldown. Eh… i’d rather it be casted for balanced reasons.

Burn guardian is super viable, and one of the only professions that can COMPLETELY deny a rez, 95% of the time. In fact, if the enemy tries to rez, you can usually wipe the entire team!

Currently, your biggest counter is going to be Thief. Thief will always kill you in a 1v1 unless they are absolutely terrible, which doesn’t generally happen in plat. But other than that – very good at 1v1, absolutely a beast in team fights.

Of course, not exactly a tournament build. Naru’s Bunker/Condi Removal/Perma Quickness team will make sure that you can’t deal damage (especially when they character swap when they see you! lol)

Why does the game try so hard to force me to 50% win rate? And how does it seem to do this so effectively?

I’m in platinum and pulling 30-36% of team damage, healing, and kills almost every game. I’m winning team fights but the team can’t seem to stay on a point, or hold something without me present.

Currently, solo queue is a nightmare because I believe that my rating will always get pushed below Duo queues, or if I get a higher rating, I’ll be forced to WIN AGAINST duo queues to progress higher. If I win against duo queues, it starts putting me against a duo queue when I have 2 1300~ rating team mates, when I’m at 1600~.

I mean, it’s ridiculous. One person can only affect the outcome of a match by so much. You simply can’t win against these odds alone.

Add a solo queue please so I can actually progress…

Renewed Focus - Let Us End It Early

I think we should be able to end renewed focus early by pressing the skill/button again. There are too many times we can die to condis while invulnerable…

You can cancel it, it just goes on full cooldown.

Out of these 3 builds you guys are discussing,
Naru’s build is more versatile and provide more adaptive to various situation. Good for high rank matches.

Symbolic Power build is extremely strong in smaller cap point, but serve limited purpose in large capping point such as mid of Foefires. If there is more than 2 Eles on opposite team, I would swap to this build.

Burn Guard on the other hand is extremely weak against a well-played GS/Mace Warrior, due to limited break-stun skill. I would swap class/build if there is 3 Warriors in opposite team. Also, Diamond Skin Eles is your nemesis. The firepower of this build in group fight is the best though.

All builds are good, it depends on how you can foreseen and adapt to your opponent’s team composition in order to win the match!

I mean, the burn build has just as much survivability has a power DH, and far more damage. Even naru is forced to run from me. I had a 495 – 500 match with him the otherr day when he was queueing with Nos.

I can duel a diamond skin ele on point and win eventually, and even if he is with his team i can burn through the team. It’s not as countered as you think it is. It has high mobility, high suitability, and absolutely insane damage. I can run from warriors until resistance fades, or use my number of blocks to simply burn through resistance and remove with my sword rune…

it’s really quite nice. im in plat now.

I can generally 1v1 against them and not die, i can hold point myself against them just fine….

And yes, against an engi comp, I can straight up 3v1 on point and kill all 3 lmao..

Hmm from my point of view as ele main.

Power meditrapper: I see them often slay my team (or the oposite …) …. But i personally don´t fear them. Good ones are definitly dangerous but if they overuse LB they are doomed …

Symbolic: While hard to kill i can ignore them often …. I just fight mainly from range.

Burn: When i run standard soldier rune/shout build i disable them. If not O_o …. (I wanted to play a bit diffrent for testing and used scavenging rune, got a burn DH on oposing team and he destroyed us … ) I don´t like it but all tries showed soldier rune is the way to go for ele :-(.

Eles will give me trouble if there is no condi on my team, but having 1 necro or thief that knows how to target is how i generally deal with eles >.>

a couple stuns, a little more condi cover…. mmmm a toasty ele.

Try the build, it’s pretty brutal.

And what I like about this build: using your healing skills more efficiently HEAVILY rewards you with a 1v1 win. the difference between using contemplation when a necro stuns with reaper 5, and using contemplation when the reaper uses 5 and spins on you with 4…. you gain all that health back, plus DELETE all of the condi damage he just did to you, rather than “only” break stun of 5, and then you get to eat a spin..

On a power necro though you probably want to avoid the spin…

I can’t help but beg to differ. My build performs tremendously well in skirmish mid fights. It can play any role except the 1v2 bunker role Menders Symbolic has on side points.

If someone just ignores you and goes for your team, as a symbolic you just don’t have the damage to really pressure anyone.. If you’re running marauder ammy or something, you die much much easier than a mender’s symbolic, and you cant really 1v2 anymore.

Maybe 1v1 , but again, if I just walk away from you and ignore you its useless because your damage just isn’t high enough as symbolic.

As power DH, it’s still fairly good, but burn guard using his virtues and elite at the same time as the power DH will win against power DH as long as I don’t stand on you and take unnecessary power damage.

Whenever it’s a burn guard at 100% with full cooldowns vs power dh with the same, the burn DH will win. If it’s a symbolic, i just dont fight and instead lead them to a team fight where I can wipe them with AoE burn.

Burn DH is better in team fights as well. Way more damage, plus AoE cripple and vuln. just as good at surviving as a power DH as well.

Very good at reviving/preventing stomps/killing downed players too. I can often bait people to a corpse and then burst them down and either 1. force them off the body or 2. kill them before they can respond.

I win 2v1 very often, and I can even win a 3v1 at times. It’s ridiculous if you know how to play it right and land your abilities where you need them…and use your healing skills with 100% efficiency lol

You sure that DH is better than Radiance? You’re not even using the healing trap.

Zeal is actually better than Radiance in terms of raw burn damage output thanks to the trait Kindled Zeal.

As for DH over Zeal, the entire purpose for burn Guards taking DH is the cover condition traits: Dulled Senses and Zealot’s Aggression. A non-cleansed 5 burn stack in a period of 3 seconds makes up for any other burn stack cleansed by running core Guard. Your damage throughout a fight will increase by taking DH.

Any dps loss by not taking Zeal is instantly gained back through sustain gains by improved F2/F3 and Hunter’s Fortification (cleanse on block).

Litany of Wrath over Purification because,

  • Lower CD heal
  • Instant cast. With little stability in the build we can’t afford to get interrupted.
  • Potentially a greater heal when applying burns in a group.

Speaking of stability or lack-there-of, OP, consider using SYG over Smite Condition. It’ll give you another stunbreaker as well as AoE Stability.

Unfortunately this build relies on the heals from Smite Condition so much that it just wouldn’t be viable if I swapped it around. I have tried to add more stability to the mix, but it seems to always be to my detriment.

And yeah, Litany of Wrath is just an amazing heal and can often times give me a form of invulnerability for its duration (25% of damage is healing, and i can stack each target to 4k ticks of burn or higher…. 1000hps per target…)

I don’t understand the usage of Zealot’s Aggression over Bulwark here. Maybe it was a mistake?

Also, why Contemplation of Purity over Purging Flames? Condition management shouldn’t be a problem as DH, especially with this build – and even if it was PF is still a strong clear.

I’m confused.

Zealot’s Aggression cripples the target, and causes your justice to proc Vuln and Cripple. Absolutely vital to cover up your burns so that they cant be cleansed as easily.

Condition management is absolutely a problem. This build can solo necros, condi revs, condi thieves, power thieves, power necros, rangers…. but it needs to have Contemplation for the stun break as well as the INSANE boons you get from clearing them with this spell.

In addition, when you use Contemplation, you are healed for about 2,000 HP. Definitely should be factored in if you want to choose Purging Flames.

I find Purging Flames is very easy to avoid in comparison to Judge’s intervention, which is instant and ALSO heals and ALSO breaks stuns.

I have been running meditation burn guard before the patch and after the patch, and i have to say, it’s doing quite well. I can single out a target and burst them down with burn, and then use the body as bait… trap the body and use my scepter and sword symbols and stack the burns up to 10k ticks per second in an aoe…

Honestly, the “race to see if you can condition faster than he can cleanse” is the whole fun of being a condition spec. You should always be bringing condition cleanse in your builds – the entire game is based around being able to ignore things like immob and chill and catch your enemy.

As a condition spec there are certain builds i know will gank me 1v1 and kill me, builds i can win against pretty easily (not much condi cleanse or vital), and builds that will give me an honest fight (druids, tempests) to see if i can land my cooldowns in a way that ends with him at 0 condi cleanse and me at 1 condi applicator. Its fun, and a challenge, and most people run condi cleanse anyway.

This is THE choice for burn build in Spvp right now. Bleed, torment, cripple, and vuln apply protection for your burns. Can survive -okay- in a 1v1, but in group fights this build gets increasingly stronger per target. I once put 30 burns on a minionmancer.

Good healing and condi removal, two teleports, a leap, an invuln, kitten tons of burn potential. what more could you want?

What step in the matchmaking process were you? Were you waiting in queue? Ready up?

I feel like the dishonor timer is extremely detrimental to play with. There are times where the queue breaks and gives me dishonor after kicking me out. There are times when the loading screen doesn’t work all the way, and the game crashes, giving me dishonor. There are times where i try to switch characters, but wait a little too long, and I can’t log in with either character that i had chose and i get dishonor.

There are times where the queue comes up and i step away for 31 seconds and can’t play for an hour because of it.

I make people wait 30 more seconds to find another match, or a bug happens and it forces me out completely, and i’m basically told “You’re not allowed to play our game.” even if it was the GAME’s fault…

Just a bad system to have.

The only people I have trouble with on my condi necro is DH and Revenant, and even then it’s not by a huge margin.

I’m using a non-meta build, and in the last season I had an 80% win rate by the time I hit legendary. A reaper’s place is in team fights. Run into a fight, drop your AoE, remove boons, and get the heck outta dodge. Target someone with lots of boons and shred them off, target them for your teammates to say “hey, i’m making this guy a soft little kitten for you, eat him up please”.

You can’t just run in, go mid at the beginning of the game, and expect not to get stomped. Go home and 1v1. Go far and 1v1. THEN start joining team fights and really screwing people up. Try to make people follow you off point, and then gank them.

Again, revenants and DH are going to give you a little trouble. DH less so, because if you avoid the traps and use LOS they are pretty much screwed… Rev will stick to you like glue and eat you up 9/10 times if they catch you alone.

Wanderer is a little squishy i’m feeling. Too many non-bunker to really be viable. I would go with carrion.

Actually it doesn’t seem to horrible on live. The reduced amount, combined with the inaccuracy you’ll have if you honestly try to nail the corrupt on every 15s cooldown… the sustained boon removal through scepter is nice against targets that are running from me, and curses feels a little better now that dagger #5 and the GM trait remove a boon. I feel like this just gave necromancers more wiggle room.

Don’t see you crying for Warrior, Thief, and Guardian none who had a role in the current meta at top levels of play. And really to a smaller degree Ranger and Necro didn’t either. Don’t be so dramatic.

I got to legendary as a solo queue necro. Necro was ok i think.

50/50 w/l ratio...

50/50 is not a problem however.

The problem is when Anet implements a league were you’re supposed to climb divisions in order to show your skill, but everybody gets matched with this 50/50 and so everybody finish on the same division no matter what. I’ve played PvP for a while and I know guildies of mine that arent even r80 (so they havent played that much) and are ruby too, cause they are matched with people like them.

However given that all those matches really were in favor of one team over the other (instead of the op just taking a pretty common occurrence and shouting murder) then every loss in your disfavoured position would have been no pip loss as long as you got over 300 points and a win in disfavoured position would mean a +2 which would probably be a big upward move. So try harder and overcome the odds.
If you lost pips given you were over 300 that verifies the match making believes you were equal and it is your own fault you lost when you did. One example 10 game long does not prove a pattern, that’s a fairly likely occurrence.

Some of the matches that I’ve lost +300 were against 4 premades were teamfights were tight (so equal skill) but rotations were way better. Anyway, this post isnt a rant, just that yday I found funny how the “50/50 theory” was happening to me on that perfect way , even if 10 matches doesnt mean anything ofc

That’s not how it works. It tries to continually push to to 50/50… meaning if you have a win ratio above 50%, you will keep going up because you’ll win more game then you’ll lose, but it’ll try to keep you close to even by giving you “harder” opponents.

Regardless, you will continue to rise in the ranks because if you’re good, your winrate will still be above 50%.

I have been solo queuing since the league started, not one team game, and i have about a 65-70% winrate and im halfway through diamond.

Honestly the curret Foot in the Grave is so powerful i run it on my condi reaper ignoring dhuumfire totally. Cause cc’d reaper does no damage.

I don’t see why you’d need it on reaper when you can #3 to apply stability every couple of seconds.
