I also take the stance that if someone has a stupid or silly name, I simply just avoid grouping or interacting with them. It takes very little effort to find a non-real world name to use. If someone can’t even be bothered to do that, well that is telling.

It’s similar to people who post on forums and misspell the title and every other word. They can’t even be bothered to preview it? Of course, I’m not referring to the occasional typo.

Plus, in this game, all of your characters can have the same first name, and just use a different last name. There is no reason to use X’s.

I play these games to escape the real world; not have it thrown back in my face constantly. Players going out of their way to try sound as out of place as possible are not what I consider positive folks. They are trying to break others’ immersion; that is their intent. At the very least; they simply don’t care about other people. I wouldn’t want to associate with that type either.

I despise thematically breaking costumes as well. Tera even goes so far as to give weapon replacements that are squeaky toys. Really?

I tried Tera and hated the models and the armors. It was typical asian, so I didn’t complain, I just left.

I will not play or support a fantasy game that devolves into a world filled with players dressed as clowns, gangsters, sports-players, etc. It cheapens the aesthetic of the world far too much.

I am against mounts for the same reason. They always go too far and add pink, polka-dotted, glittery, fairy-winged two-headed gerbils or the like. Ugh. It turns into some “disneyland meets animal farm on acid” mix.

What is the priority?

In all honesty, there is no real priority. The priority seems to shift wildly…. It’s quite evident from pre-release to 6 months in, the game is just kinda veering sharply from patch to patch.

However, I have noticed anything to do with TP or economy are always on top while it seems that profession balance is always at the bottom.

Yes, I refer to this as the Frankenstein’s Monster of MMOs. No vision, or at least the vision they did have was abandoned.

I’m really shocked that people take games so serious. Game companies are not your friends! The reasons why you like one company above another is pure PR.

Not true for many. I played WoW for about a month and a half after it launched. I didn’t like the way they were handling many things, so quit and uninstalled the game. Never loaded it again, and have not purchased another title from them since ( no SC2, no D3, etc).

Now that I see how Anet does business, they are now in that same category for me. I will never purchase another title (or expansion) with their name attached. Why? Because the title that I purchase will very likely not be what I end up with.

PS And the moderator didn’t threaten but just warn(inform) the OP so that the thread could stay OPEN! How is that bad?

I tried many times to get the vista. Sadly, after getting insta-killed by knockoffs several times, having 3 or more dedge spawn on top of me many times, and having to deal with their mechs that are 99% immune to my condition damage build (thus requiring me to use my Elite to just kill one), I gave up on this hell hole.

I immediately packed my bags and headed for Bloodtide Coast instead. I had about 10x more fun in the Coast and fighting Risen than I did suffering in that horrible mole-infested, badly tuned zone. Screw 100% map completion. It isn’t worth going back in there.

If you don’t want a gear grind – in terms of tiered progression that gate future content – that’s understandable. I don’t really want that, either. But cosmetic progression, while suitable to some, is utterly meaningless to others. Those people, I feel, must find another MMO. It’s just the sucky truth.

And you need to realize gear grinding and gated progression is utterly meaningless to others as well. I always quit MMOs near or at level cap because I know there is nothing meaningful at the end. That is until GW2, which is why I bought it.

If raid-type gear progression is added, I will uninstall the day it is announced and never touch the game again.

If it isn’t giving you the quote icon, you can work around it by manually entering it into the address line of your browser. See the following example:

Clicking on the permalink icon (which is always there) brings me to a post with this on my address line:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/How-do-I-quote-in-these-forums/first#post617038

I change it to this and hit enter:

And voila, it is the same as hitting the quote icon. So

  • add a /quote to the end and hit enter

JESUS CHRIST THE EVENT ISN’T OVER STOP COMPLAINING. THERE ARE THREE PARTS LEFT.

Sorry for caps but it seems people just aren’t getting it. It is extremely frustrating.

For the record, I haven’t spent a dime of real life or in-game currency on this, and it still left a sour taste in my mouth. It’s obvious now that any “cool” skins introduced are going straight to “legendary” status or the BLC toilet. So much for the end-game " starts at level 1" theory, huh?

I previously felt that spending in the Black Lion shop was perfectly fine, and supporting Anet, but now I see it just goes towards Legendaries and BLCs. So I will not be spending another penny there.

There may be 3 more acts left, but I will not be partaking of them. I will be playing another game that traditionally has excellent Halloween events, with items for everyone to collect, not just the super rich (in-game and out). That makes the event FUN. And fun is what I am after. So I will be playing that, and spending my money in their cash shop, since Halloween is my favorite holiday.

Getting the shark was particularly fun – fields and fields of krait, with some hostile sharks mixed in, that I had to weave through.

Haha, I couldn’t wait for my shark either. Worst part was that it took forever for me to find one in that terrible krait-filled gloom! One hit and I was going to be a goner!

Cortechs.3265

It’s not just a generational thing. Some people just function differently on a basic level than others. There’s a really serious difference between introverts and extroverts. The design of modern MMOs is gradually becoming more and more welcoming to extreme introverts like me, with GW2 being the most so far. It’s a very different MMO in regards to social requirements than in times past. There are people playing these games who didn’t play them at all before, and many of them are not like you and don’t think like you, and cannot even if they want to because they’re simply wired differently. It’s not as simple as getting someone like me to “open up;” it only works on a case by case basis with very specific individuals. A message board with strangers is something I can handle, whereas instant messaging is not. The game chat is more like instant messaging.

I’m certainly not blazing through the game. My main is level 71. But I also don’t want to talk or be buddies. I’m perfectly content just running around with folks wordlessly doing DEs and skill challenges.

Excellent points. I too am a pretty extreme introvert, yet I love MMOs and have been playing them since EQ. And as group-oriented as EQ was, I never joined a guild or had many in-game friends. Why? Because as Azoetia says, I’m just not “wired that way”.

The easiest method to get me to open up and become “buddies” is to place me and one other person in encounters together. If we click, then good. That is how it worked in the old days. If I never found a buddy to click with, I would just solo or join PUGs.

However, throw me into a group and I’ll clam up. It’s just the way it works. You can try forcing me to group, like EQ, but in the end it doesn’t work. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy group dynamics, I do. I love playing support in groups. I just won’t be the one chatting it up.

“social is as social as you make it”
“it’s your job to try and make friends, not the game’s”

No one is arguing that, but there are environments which are encouraging of teamwork and socialization, and environments which are meant to discourage it.

Let me give an example. In SW:TOR I played a Smuggler/IA. If I came to a quest area where I needed to kill NPCs and click objectives and saw other players coming over, I would stealth through some NPCs to put a wall between me and the other players. That way, they could not take the kills or clickies I needed to complete my quests.

In GW2 I go to Skill Points and DEs and actively look around for other players. I often wait for others before starting events so that I have other people to play with. I do this partly because I sometimes need more people to complete it, but usually because events are more fun with more players (until you reach a zerg threshold). There are also usually people in /map broadcasting when events are occurring or about to start. Sure, we are not holding hands and singing Kumbaya, but it’s helping each other out.

Just the other day me and a guardian bumped into each other in a cave network and ended up tackling an elite DE. Then we stuck together for about 8 elite mobs, a vista, a skill point, several mining nodes, and gobs of regular mobs. I never did that in TOR or Rift.

If GW2 wasn’t designed as it was to promote cooperative play, I would never have teamed up with this person.

It’s funny. Not being forced to do something, strangely enough encourages me to want to play more. In prior MMOs were the carrot-on-a-stick was uber-gear that dropped from long repetitive dungeon crawls fueled by players spamming their stupid rotations, made me not want to participate.

I feel exactly the same way. In other games I would often lose interest and quit even before max level, because I knew there was nothing for me to do once I got there. Here, I can play when I want and not worry about falling behind or not being able to pvp without being far behind the curve.

Why are a lot of gamers unsociable?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Cortechs.3265

I am “unsociable” because I get very little out of being social. I am here to enjoy the game and atmosphere. I also enjoy helping and playing along side other people. However, I loathe small talk. I have no interest in hearing about peoples’ pets, classes, their jobs, their children, or their partners. I play these games to get away from real life; not have it constantly injected into my playtime.

When I see people jump on their cellphones (or cellular babysitters as I call them) every spare second they have, I wonder if they even like themselves a little bit. They can’t seem to be alone with themselves for even a millisecond.

You say that “combat and personal story don’t need a MMO at all”, but neither does socializing, which was my point. IRC can get you all the socializing you need; so can a VOIP program with a guild. Why must everyone at a DE stop and tell each other their feelings, and what they are eating for dinner in a combat-oriented online game?

I was hoping the lack of loot squabbling and resource competition would make for a better community, and I really think it has. I have no complaints about the server I am on or the players on it. It is so nice being in a cooperative game as opposed to all of those “me, me, me” games out there.

But I understand where you are coming from. It’s easier socially to just go about your business without having to talk or socialize with others, I understand that’s how the current generation of MMOers feel. I’m an older MMOer so maybe I see things differently, I find the major satisfaction in MMO’s is socializing with others, I hate barren wasteland MMO’s. I know it’s a cliche by now, but if players prefer to do content with no socialization then why do they bother with a MMO instead of a single player video game? Sure it’s because occasionally they do want to be social, but that’s what chat programs are for which you can run side by side with your single player video game.

This goes both ways. If you want to get online and socialize, go play games designed for that. Try the Sims.

GW2 was designed around combat, personal stories, and public grouping. The grouping system is one of the primary reasons I am here, and I started MMO gaming in the UO/EQ days myself. We have always been here. It is not a new phenomenon.

P/S - Cond/Prec/Tough - Am I doing it wrong?

Cortechs.3265

Right now, I am only level 55 and am using Pistol + Shield. I have been specing into Precision, Condition Damage, and Toughness. Is this viable?

There are two main reasons I ask this. First is that every condition damage item sold by the Karma merchants has Power on it instead of Precision. At least, all of the Karma merchants for the last 5-6 zones I have been in. I have even tried going to alternate zones in the same level range hoping they had different loadouts. Is Anet trying to tell me something?

Secondly, I seem to see other players having a much easier time cutting through mobs than I do. While I enjoy P+S, and understand that the shield is more defensive oriented, I still wonder if I should be doing something else.

At the moment I am running Elixer Gun (orginally was FT), Flame Turret, and Elixer-S. I was going to go with a FT build, but the Elixer Gun seems to do a better job with the build, and using the FT’s number 2 almost always gets blocked, which really only leaves me with the number 1 attack for damage.

I don’t like the Grenade Kit because of the number 1 being ground-targetted, which was the main reason I went with a condition build.

Any tips? Maybe I should be using Elixir-B instead of Elixir-S?

But then you’ll have a bunch of content people like me won’t see, I disliked this about GW1, stuff like Domain of Anguish, Underworld or the Deep just weren’t doable with pugs, not that they would take a first time player along anyway.

Not only that, but you end up with the “Rift problem” where the designers are forced to add more and more Raid content, leaving little-to-no resources for the design of content for non-raiders.

Many of us chose GW2 because it didn’t have raids, and because all of the developer resources would not be wasted on Raids and progression itemization.

Players only want those who spoil dungeons by looking them up on YouTube, build their profession one way, and speed run through stuff. I disagree with all of that. For that reason I have not and will never step foot in a dungeon here.

As for DE’s, there is no point in grouping, because you are effectively already grouped. And as others have stated, I have no interest in hearing about your job, your ex, or your cat (I hate cats anyway).

I meant that the fact that Magic Find is “causing contention” is irrelevant because if we do remove it from gear, as you suggested, tomorrow it will simply be replaced by another stat/item/consumable these same elitists find doesn’t find in their extremely narrow idea of how to play the game.

What do we do then? Remove that as well? Eventually we will end up with one trait build, one set of stats, and one consumable available. We should not limit player option simply because some players have control issues.

That’s debatable, as evidenced by these threads. I don’t claim to know one way or the other, myself. But what I see is a lot of folks on both sides of the issue barking about it. Whether the perception of its impact is wrong or not, it’s obviously become a problem for the social aspect of the game.

Irrelevant. If Magic Find didn’t exist, these same OCD people would still be posting trying to control how other people play and skill/equip their characters. Today it is Magic Find. Tomorrow it will be which consumable you use, or which Trait Line you HAVE to take or you are a waste to the group, the server, and humankind.

They will never be appeased until they can inspect and judge every stat, piece of armor, and trait point spent on every character they come in contact with.

How about the fact that mounts will cause extreme clutter at banks, at waypoints, at crafting areas, and on every Heart NPC? Every game I have played that has mounts has had this problem.

Some of us do not want this to turn into Disneyland with Unicorns, Helicopters, Turtles, Snuffleupagus, etc.

I agree with the guy in one of the other mount threads who said if mounts were added it would end up looking like Disneyland before long. Pink unicorns, neon polka-dotted dragons, “nightmare” horses (so overdone), wolves, it never ends.

In my opinion, it ruins the aesthetics of the world, adds more unneeded models to load for each and every player, adds clutter at banks, quest-givers, crafting stations, etc., and generally ruins the look and FPS of the game.

Mounts are not needed and add nothing positive to the game besides giving players something else to collect, which we have mini-pets for.

And WvW is designed so that it takes time for players to get back into the action. If that were not the case, battles would never end.
