How about Trahearne's memorial?

in Living World

Curunen.8729

Yeah I agree it is a shame to see nothing for Trahearne.

Despite not liking the voice acting I did like his character and it’s a bit unkind to ignore him while focusing so heavily on Eir.

But then you could find similar situations in the old personal story – ie fawning over Apatia’s death (who you barely knew) while totally ignoring the deaths of Sieran/Tybalt/Forgal.

Soon everyone has a mobile 100b..

Spectate Mode should be removed from Hot-join

Curunen.8729

Spectator mode is a good thing – sometimes there are great players and its good to watch them the following match to learn something – even in hotjoin.

The real problem is allowing players to switch teams:
- you should not be able to go into spectator mode once the match has begun – either spectate from the start or play from the start. Spectator mode and swap team should be locked once the match starts.
- players joining after start should be forced to the losing team or team with fewest numbers.

The thing which bugs me the most is before the patch it was possible to play condition shatter without Scepter thanks to the 2 torment stacks.

After the patch it is almost impossible to play condition shatter without Scepter – try not using Scepter (ie Sword/Torch, Focus, Pistol and Staff) and it’s beyond pathetic.

I hate being forced into mandatory use of a weapon when there was more flexibility before the patch.

Hell I even used Greatsword with condition sigils for a while, and now it’s totally impossible.

Currently I’m having to run Sword/Torch + Scepter/Focus which is the compromise that I have to make until MtD is fixed.

As a comparison – with power shatter you can demolish a target golem effortlessly, and that will be even more the case after tomorrow.

The whole idea with condition shatter is condition burst – so I don’t see what the problem is with high damage ticks. If you miss your shatter, you miss your damage just like with power. The only thing condition has over power is the luxury of speccing more toughness – but then you trade off being able to 100-0 your target in 1 second (exaggeration but you get the point). You also don’t have to worry about cleansing if playing power.

And I still can’t help laughing that a single scepter 2 block will do more damage than a 4 clone shatter if this change goes through. Change kittening scepter to 4 stacks if it’s so scary and reduce the duration.

I dunno why I’m bothering posting this – maybe in the wild hope that some dev is reading this thread and reconsiders the change.

Rune, Sigil and Stat "Wardrobe"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

Buy rune/sigil – apply to existing weapon/armour piece – rune/sigil remains unlocked for that specific piece of armour/weapon drop down menu allows applying multiple runes/sigils to an item of armour or weapon, allowing option to swap at any time free of charge.

Especially with full ascended weapons/armour – it makes no sense to either:
- craft an entire duplicate set for a different rune/sigil.
- use the hideously overpriced upgrade extractor for every item every time you want to change rune/sigil.
- overwrite the existing rune/sigil meaning you have to buy it again if you want to swap between different runes/sigils.

Being bound to the individual item of armour or weapon means you still have to pay a decent amount of gold for a rune or sigil to be unlocked on an entire set – not to mention if you want to run different builds with different sets of armour (ok you could have a legendary weapon, but at least there is no legendary armour… yet).

I appreciate there needs to be gold sinks in the game, but rune/sigil restrictions on gear should not be it.

All asura greatsword animations on mesmer (and every other weapon/skill/class) are superior – one handed mirror blade throw, awesome mind stab action, BY THE POWER OF GREYSKULL one handed iZerker summon and an iWave animation that looks like it has some proper momentum behind it.

If pve had enemies like the Heart of the Mists class npcs with hitpoints similar to that of enemy players in wvw, and which have a downstate you can stomp, I would find pve combat fun to play.

I think those nightmare enemies during the Scarlet story which had a downstate were fun to fight against.

Otherwise I find repetitive rotations against bullet sponges with millions of hp ridiculously boring and painful for the mind. NPC AI is not intelligent or creative – it just repeats the same thing over and over again till you memorise the pattern. For a game that is almost an action rpg or even fighting game I feel that kind of enemy does not provide the type of challenge that brings the most satisfaction.

Tbh I’d rather not fight other players, I’d rather play pve but the combat is too boring so I am encouraged to play pvp/wvw for the kind of satisfaction I crave. Note, this is NOT the satisfaction of beating other players – instead it is the satisfaction in the flow of combat, where enemies are unpredictable, hitpoints are low and can be burst, there is the fun of the stomping animation and so on…

Enough with the pistol, let’s get a proper MANLY weapon!

And to those who say focus is only an OH weapon I say, why not! We have a ranged GS, we’re the most suitable class to wield dual foci.

It should be almost a pure cc weapon with a mixture of additional condition/direct damage and slightly longer cooldowns than usual, to carve out its own niche.

Skill #1: Throw focus
- toss out an illusionary version of the focus, like a frisbee (with a short trail of butterflies?), which bounces between allies/enemies the same number of times as winds of chaos or siren’s call, granting boons and conditions.
Cast time ~3/4s
Allies get – swiftness/fury/vigour (up for debate)
Enemies get – bleeding/vulnerability (or just direct damage?)

Skill #2: Flutterby (clone)
- Twirl on the spot and blink in a direction determined by the movement key you are holding at the time, leaving a clone in your place which casts Throw focus – so forwards, backwards, left OR right, each the same fixed distance.
Blind enemies where you appear for 3s.
Blind radius: 180
Cast time: 1/2s?
Combo finisher: Leap
CD ~10s

Skill #3: Singularity (ground targeted)
- essentially a land based version of Spear #5 vortex.
- deals minor damage at target location? (say a few hundred points per second?)
Duration ~5s
Combo field: ethereal
Pull radius ~400 (as vortex)
Any time while active: Explode
- detonate your singularity dealing damage to all in the area
Combo finisher: Blast (cannot self finish with the ethereal field!)
CD – undetonated ~15s
detonated ~25s

Cooldowns and abilities up for debate, I’m only giving an example above. #2 could be ground targeted for example, and it could have a short cast time of around 1/2 a second.

Finally we need two fan skins and with F/F we’re good to go!

Why is there this constant bickering between wvw and pve players as to who gets what?

To me it’s a new map, with largescale pvp opportunities, with LS going on in the background, which might make for some unpredictable and fresh situations. I’m quite exited about the whole thing. What’s wrong with having LS elements in the map?

Any pure pve players entering should be prepared for pvp combat and stick with a group if that makes them feel safer. And for pure wvwers – we don’t know if there will be wvw objectives tied into this map, whether around the LS and npcs or not, but regardless there will be other players here to fight.

For the record I don’t like pve combat, don’t do dungeons (beyond arah story) and have never set foot in fractals.

[SPOILERS!] Ending opinions

Curunen.8729

Well having finally got through it I can say a few things [SPOILERS]:

I was surprised to find it was the end of the story – I thought the pacing of the initial part of the story up till Rata Novus was much better. After this I thought it rushed ahead way too fast and all of a sudden it’s like “oh, ok so this is it?”
The fight with Mordremoth itself was very tedious. But then I hate pve bullet sponges in general so I’m not the target audience for these “boss” fights…
The glider section bugged out so I had to restart a few times. But once the gliding worked, it was a relatively easy, but extremely tedious fight – ie a test of stamina/endurance and not skill.
- the scenery was as usual stunning. I’m constantly in awe of the environments the Anet team is able to create. Amazing.
Overall I thought it was a good concept of entering the Dream, and well done despite me not enjoying bullet sponge boss fights.
Sad to see Trahearne die – it seems his voice actor did the best job right here at the end. I actually like his character. Looking forward to the next LS to see what happens in the future.
Edit: for the record I soloed the end hence why I might have found it tedious. I imagine it might be faster in a group.

Play whatever you like – if the theme/style of mesmer is attractive to you then who is to tell you otherwise.

I say dive right in, learn as you go.

You’ll probably die a lot at first – don’t be put off, just keep at it – I promise you’ll gain a much deeper appreciation for the class by sticking with it through the difficult learning phase.

Edit: For the record – I never played GW1 and the last tab targeted game I have played is KotOR 2. I had never played a game with holding right click to rotate the camera, so the entire combat experience in GW2 was completely alien to me at first.
I started with thief (got bored after 2 weeks), then moved straight to mesmer – took me at least a year to properly understand how to play, but it has been my main ever since and I have absolutely no regrets. Actually I feel like all the deaths and failures have given me an invaluable experience of the class – including stupid things like doing most of map completion without a focus/speed boost.

I’m very happy I didn’t faff about with other classes to “learn the basics” because it would have been a waste of time – and less time I could have spent enjoying mesmer.

My belief is ranged combat is impossible to balance in this game because of one thing – tab targeting => no skill needed to aim ranged attacks.

- ranged skills too weak as in the past with combat strongly favouring melee
- ranged skills too strong with no skill required compared to melee

No you are right they are not but nobody if going to take a Mirage over a chrono for anything PvE related except open world where people can play whatever they want. The spec looks great for the PvP players, you only have to look at the utility skills to see which area of the game this was designed for.

The downside to only creating an elite spec for PvP players is its a dead spec for the rest of the playerbase.

It might not even be that good for pvp. So far I’m feeling Chrono is better – more sustain, more reliability and still good enough damage.

Roaming: Who, what, why, how? #Discussion

in WvW

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

So why do roamers engage in pvp that heavily favors them, is low rewarded and has minimal impact to their server? Because they like to bully others.

As someone who enjoys roaming and small scale wvw play I strongly disagree with this and find it a bit insulting.

I wil firstly say how I prefer to roam. I always try to:
- react to rather than initiate combat with another player, unless its obvious they want to engage in a fight and I need to get the initial attack in.
- use objectives (camps/sentries) to set targets. I never roam aimlessly, I’ll always look out for the distribution of captured objectives on a map and decide where is the best place to flip camps, whether that means running around northcamp in enemy BL or flipping southern camps or whatever, there will always be a goal in mind if the situation arises that I happen to not run into any decent fights.
- on a similar note, I will join in with small or large groups trying to flip a tower or keep if I happen to be moving in that direction or there are no other good objectives on the map, but eventually I’ll get bored of it and move off in my own direction if it looks like a camp needs taking.
- not chase/hunt players who are obviously built/geared for zerg play or are upscaled, or at an obvious disadvantage – unless they have decided to attack me and initiate the combat or I am outnumbered and they are the squishiest target in a group of players attacking me. If an enemy is running past me not wanting to engage in combat I will let them go.
- on that note, when I am outnumbered, whether 1v2+, 2v3+, 3v4+ then as far as I’m concerned anything goes, I don’t care what build or gameplay the enemy is geared for in that situation, I will play to win/survive.
- but I will chase players who are geared for roaming even if we outnumber them 2v1 for example enemy condi mesmers.
- if I come across a good fight, whether solo or with one or two allies vs other players who are geared for small scale or roaming, I will abandon objectives to engage in it, even if it means juking back and forth for an extended period of time with no clear victory or failure in sight. Yes it might not be getting points, but in this situation I don’t care because the fun of the combat is more important.

Secondly although I can’t speak for other players, I will give reasons why I enjoy wvw roaming compared with large scale gameplay or even pvp:
1. Less lag – large scale wvw is not fun when the gameplay is not smooth due to lag.
2. Less screen clutter and unpredictable effects – I don’t find dying to aoes that deal thousands of damage any fun.
3. Ability to build gear exactly as I want, unlike in pvp where the amulet stat restrictions are stupid. For example I would run Viper in pvp but it’s either all glass or nothing. In wvw I can round it out with other stats to get the exact stat distribution I want for the playstyle I prefer.
4. No stupid capture points to play around – taking camps/sentries and having fights is far more fun than running around a tiny map trying to hold capture points.
5. On that note the freeform nature of wvw is more appealing than the rigid match structure of pvp. Maybe you’re in a 1v1 then 3 other enemies come along… what do you do? It’s stuff like that that I get a kick out of, you never know what is around the corner and need to be prepared for anything.
6. More individual control over skills – I don’t like the large scale blob or even medium scale gameplay in the same way as I don’t like high end instanced pve – I prefer to have control over all the skills I’m using rather than being a “skill” for a macroscopic entity consisting of multiple players.
7. Challenge – I enjoy the challenge of running solo or with one/two allies and especially running into outnumbered situations or with skilled opponents where what you do as an individual matters, either in securing a single stomp or surviving and escaping.

I know some might say roaming is dead for multiple reasons – supposedly “broken” HoT builds being one of them, however I don’t think it’s in as dire a state as it is made out to be. I build to be self sufficient when solo, in order to survive and harass, whether that involves objectives or players or both, and there is certainly a lot of fun and challenge to be had if you look for it and aim to challenge yourself.

I’m not sure why people are obsessed with the idea on wanting an offhand as a main hand. It is really irrelevant what weapon they give Mesmer because they don’t necessarily follow conventional mechanics.

When people say main hand focus all they’re talking about is dual wielding their “The Anomaly” skins which they never use that they made with their 150 gold. If that skin never existed nobody would even think of mh focus.

Wow so much salt.

I personally don’t understand arguments against MH focus given that the profession as a whole uses it’s “mind” rather than the weapons to do anything.
