HoT is overwhelming when you first get there. You have the story, events that pop up everywhere, hero points, pois, masteries! Once you open the map some it gets better and more fun. With the exception of the champs for hero points, you can do everything soloable. It may require a tweak in your build or an upgrade in your character.
Just don’t look at the masteries to much lol. I feel daunted when I see how much xp it will take for something.
Time for a root touch up.
New styles would be awesome, and/or the option to use styles from other races.
We have all sorts of holiday minis. I would like a turkey for Thanksgiving.
I think the UI could use a bit of work. Mainly I would like an overlay map. The mini map is sometimes to small and the world map blocks everything.
Also a movable chat window.
I wouldn’t say it’s as easy as building a lego. I have a friend who puts mine together and usually watch to learn. I think I have the bascis down but when it comes to the BIOS I won’t touch anything.
I’m afraid of screwing it up.
But yeah…if you can avoid pre-built, do so. It’s worth it.
I’ve stopped trying to run dungeons. Unless you have enough in a guild or friends, I find dungeons pugs no fun. I find most pugs just zerg through it and expect you to know what to do. Or just roll along with it for xp.
For the most part the community here is great. It’s just that dungeon aspect I don’t find fun.
How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

8/10. I’m loving everything so far except the mastery grind. And the crashes.
Yes. You have to “train” a mastery to master it. When it’s filled you have to spend a point to master it.
Your xp only goes towards what is training at that moment.
I’m enjoying it. I feel like it was worth paying for. I can’t justify why you should should/should not like it.
What’s a fast way to level now? The last guide I found suggested dungeons, but those are hardly run anymore (at least for story mode to unlock). Is it still the basics 1) crafting 2) pvp 3) map completion?
Aside from tombs/ex scrolls. Don’t really have those stock piled.
I don’t find it hard. It can be a grind though, to get those masters. Especially if you really really want one…it seems to take forever! It could be just taking me awhile because I head towards a quest and get distracted by adventuring around the jungle…seeing where I can jump and get to.
Only thing I have to really complain about is the champions for heroic points. Sometimes it’s hard finding enough people for a point, especially on a dead map.
Experiencing exact same issue. However, why not just in the meantime do this story step on 32bit client and then go back to 64bit?
I’ll throw my hat in for this. I tried 4 times 4 crashes. I switched to 32-bit and did the quest no problem then next time I launched went back to 64-bit
Is it easy to switch back and forth?
Masteries share across account, unless your sylvari is on second account then that’s a problem.
But for story sake, go for sylvari. Makes a lot more interesting story (and you get to kitten off Rytlock with triple sylvari in the end)
I know they are across accounts. It’s just doing the exploration/events again will get old fast (for me). But making Rytlock mad is a good selling point!

Yes, i did the repair just like that the first time. The support ticket guy also asked me to delete my local.dat file under appdate folder.
the support ticket people said that I have a corrupted file system. My game would crash when I waypoint into another world.
Hope it fixes it for you!
Umm, you say your first mesmer is already 80, so what do you mean by leveling?
I meant by masteries.
How are you trying to repair? Have you tried this way?
https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/28148006-Repairing-the-Game-Client
I have a separate shortcut just for repairs. Also, is the game crashing in general (like most people are experiencing with HoT) or when you are trying to repair?
Try contacting paysafe for a refund, and play nice. When I purchased the expansion for FFXIV I bought the wrong version from the SE store, not the Steam version. After a few nice mails and proving I didn’t use the code I got a refund. This was for a digital copy too.
Being nice and not ranting on a post goes along way.
I had a human Mesmer awhile ago, when I got her to 80 I took a break from the game. When I came back I wanted to player Mesmer, but on Sylvari. Now I have 2 and can’t decide which to actually lvl! If I lvl both at the same time I will get burnt out on HoT content.
The tough choices!
A bard class would be fun, but not attached to a mesmer. Totally different classes. One creates illusions, another sings songs.
Is there a way to verify you are using the 64 bit version?
when i type -repair, I don’t get a crash log. the program (not responding), and then the normal windows, " do you want to wait for program to respond or close program"
I have selected wait for program, and nothing happens. Waited approx 10 minutes.
FYI, I downloaded new .DAT file.
Old file size is: 25,696,665 KB
New file size is: 25,296,916 KB
When doing a repair, don’t use any other programs. When I do it stops responding. Just let the repair run on its own.
I’ll just leave this here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/support/64-bit-Client-Beta-FAQ
If you’re on a 32-bit CPU/OS, well it’s about time to upgrade. There’s honestly no reason to still be using 32-bit these days.
I upgraded to the 64bit and still have crashes. It’s still in beta and not a fix for everyone. I rarely, if EVER crashed in GW2. In HoT I crash at least once when playing.
SSD is totally worth it!
I just want to add my voice to this annoying bug. I’ve never crashed in GW2 until HoT. Now it’s usually during a world boss. I lag at least twice, then crash to the desktop.
I have noticed the last few times when lagging my sound stutters. Other times it’s just video.
It made no difference or 32 or 64bit client. I recently downloaded the 64 with the same problems.
I’m loving the expansion, but not the crashes.
I crash onthe loading screen when trying to enter in the Grove. Crashed twice, did a game repair, and crashed again.
I can’t continue my personal story!
My warrior and ranger. Hope you like them
What is your ranger wearing?
Curious what weapons you use for pve and why. Been broswing the builds that are stickied for new HoT builds but they seem outdated. Are they still viable?
(Also I’m bored at work, but shh….)
They are going to definitely be skinned. I’ve ran DS twice for the pets, and got those drops. Even then I think the medium chest piece is ugly lol.
It took me 2 tries. I kept screwing up getting to the ele wyvern so when I did get it I didn’t have time for the Tiger. Got him last night though!
A six pack of pocket raptors and the F2 would be call in six more.
And six more…
And six more…
This!
I would personally use it only for commander tagging in WvW or Dragon’s Stand.
You’ll lose a lot of precious DPS anywhere else. PvE, PvP, even WvW. Staying alive is the only useful thing when being a commander. As one – you want to show people where to break enemy lines and when to strike. And you can’t do that with berserker stats because you can’t afford to go 1st.
For day-to-day content it’s useless.
Raids haven’t sounded yet, but you’ll need Ascended gear for that anyway.
The lose of dps is what went through my mind, but it was so shiney and new! I mean why would Anet give us useless armor, right?
Downloaded the beta last night. Game runs a lot smoother! I haven’t been freezing/disconnected when doing events.
I have the chests for the leg stone and chest pieces. Question regarding the stats though (I’ve dusted off the Ranger so still learning)..are they worth it to actually wear? Or just for the skin? Thanks.
I haven’t played my thief in a loooong time, so can’t answer that.
How’s the game now? I’m loving it. I left a few months ago for FFXIV, and the expansion brought me back.
Just how much have I missed out on? Not sure how much you missed out on, guess that would depend where you left off.
Would jumping straight into the expansion be shooting myself in the foot? I don’t think so. I jumped right in after being gone awhile, it was a crash course relearning my class though. I have rare armor purchased from the TP. Nothing fancy or crafted. Granted, some mobs do hurt. I only pve, so can’t speak on other aspects of the game.
Where would be the best place to start? Relearn your class. Either in the pvp lobby or running other areas in Tyria. Then continue the story.
How’s the expansion? I love the expansion. The new areas are gorgeous. Gliding is super fun. The events are fun. I haven’t gotten an elite specialization yet, I’ve been distracted with getting the new Ranger pets, and lost in the jungles. Masteries are a grind though.
This threat is awesome. GW2 is one of the few mmo’s I have played where the community is helpful. There are a few trolls, but there are more good people.
There are a few items on my wish list
Black Lion Keys – I have a ton of chests, heck some from GW2 launch! I’ve just always had poopy luck with drops.
Donations. There are items in the gem store, but being I’m not in game every day, if some people decide to send something, don’t want that chance of a double gift.
@Cafard
I didn’t think about the other part you mentioned, about DS being deserted. Good point. I’m still actually in VB, but I ran down to DS and did 2 events just for the pets (got my tiger last night ). Now I can continue the story lol.
Your idea of a solo able chain is a good solution. FFXIV had that to open up flying mounts and get your flying Chocobo.
I just need the pets from GW1, but after reading what’s needed I don’t want to go through all that lol.
It is not legit, I received the same email and asked support. Since you filled out the information I would do what the other poster suggested. As well as change your log in information for other game accouts if you use the same account info to log in.
My Ranger had some surgery. Pretty happy with the result.
What armor is this?
Got all of them except the Tiger so far. Got the electric wyvern last night after doing the events. I almost lost him too! I got to the point where you glide over and land, but kept falling off. Thought I was doing something wrong, died a few times.
Came back here and realized I had to use greatsword to jump that distance. I got him with 10 seconds before map reset! I was so excited!
As to those who are complaining about the wyvern and tiger being hard to get, they are not. The events are fun. It’s a feeling of accomplishment to finish the event and get the pet.
Now to hunt down my Tiger…
Can I get another invite? Left the game for awhile.
Aith Kelioa
Sanctum of Rall
PVE
Thanks!
Actually, if you’re level 80, you should be able to unlock everything immediately. As for traits, dom/duel/inspr is great. Sometimes I substitute illusions for dominations if I’m running alone and am shattering often.
This.
I don’t understand why Xstein was giving any advice other than “unlock everything right now”.
Thanks. I have HoT and everything unlocked. I was mainly looking for PVE build suggestions. I’m having to relearn terminology as well it seems lol.
As the title says, I’m a returning player. I have a level 80 Mesmer I picked up again, but with the new skill/trait layouts I’m at a loss of where I should spend points for PVE.
Suggestions? Thanks!
Every so often my game will crash. The game goes black, still has sound and I can see my mouse. I have to close by minimizing and closing it from the task bar. I’ve ran repair a few times, but it has occurred after that still.
My gcard is up to date. I can play a whole day without an issue, the next an hour and it will crash.
1. Mesmer: Show clones and phantasms as two different colors on illusion counter.
2. Chat: Add a keybind to scroll through names for /reply. Would be much easier then clicking on the name each time. FFXIV (I realize it’s not the same game) had this function and it was super helpful in managing chat.
Thanks!
I love my Mesmer. Was my 1st 80 (when I played last). When I came back I leveled a Ranger to 80, but decided to do another Mesmer. Both are fun classes. I feel more useful as a Mesmer in dungeons and find it more fun.
Who cares what other people think. Play what you want. Some people whine when
something is hard and isn’t handed to them in a golden goblet. Others say it’s tough to level, but what’s the point of playing a game if there is no challenge?
I say bring it on! Let me die a few times and learn.
PS – I only pve.
I was doing a fractal the other night and after I got rez’d I couldn’t see my character. I could see my weapons. Party members could see me. I had to relog to fix this.
Tonight while running AC I couldn’t see chests. I could see them on the map but not in game. I had to relog to fix this as well.
In game name: Aith Kelioa
Server: Sanctum of Rall
Preferred game type: PVE and Dungeons. Getting back into the game and relearning how to Ranger.
I left when Lions Arch fell, and returning with my 80 Mesmer. I’m wondering where to go to pick up where I left the game. Mainly new areas or quest lines.
Trying to relearn how to play but lost as to where to go. Thanks!
