Consider bringing the old trait system back

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Don Zardeone.8730

Didn’t read all because my eyes are burning (ointment, nvm) but here’s how I see it.

Old trait system had really only 1-2 viable options per slot. The rest was filler, stuff people rarely used. They must have seemed like a good idea at the time but a dev can’t really know for sure how something will end up being used. The GW1 55monk comes to mind.

So if one considers that in the old system there really only were about 1-2 viable options per slot, then it’s kind of the same as before.

I think it’s better.

Also, as they add more specialisations, more entire trait lines get added (right?) so there will be more diversity or potential diversity later on.

In older games back in the olden days we often had a stat named dexterity. This stat usually handled evasion and hitratio. The higher your dex, in most games, the higher your evasion.

Back then we didn’t have 3D models, calculations were simple and graphics were sprites. You’d go stand next to a mob and attack and there would be rolls for evasion, rolls for damage, etc. We’d have vitality for health and armor for defense. Whatever hits got through evasion we “ate” or “tanked” with vit and armor.

We are in 2015 now and instead of having a make-believe, use-your-imagination evasion roll, we have a literal evasion dodge roll. The old dexterity stat has been moved out of the game and into the spot between keyboard and chair. Basically you are the dexterity stat. You determine whether you get hit or not.

If you’re pro or just really used to fighting in GW2, you can avoid pretty much all damage or most damage. Since vit/armor only matters after the dexterity roll and you are the equivalent of high dex, you don’t need high vit/armor any more.

If you’re not pro, so your dex equivalent is low, you need way more vit and armor to make up for that. Your damage will be lower too.

The problem with this last situation is that the damage output from mobs gets so high that having high vit or armor means you can take 1 or 2 more hits than a zerker can. So even if you do go the “tanky” way, you’ll have to fight like a zerker.

Might as well go full zerker anywhere on everything.

The exception is wvw. Small scale fights still allow for zerkers which is why roaming builds tend to be zerker. But Zerg vs zerg fights mean you get way more hits coming in, requiring a lot of vit and toughness to make up for the lack of dodging you can do. It’s also why wvw zerg players have stamina and energy sigils for the extra dodges.

[Suggestion]Useful Magic Find

Another way to make it more useful is higher mob density. I can just run through entire areas and ignore all the mobs because there are so few of them. I do some casual gathering runs on my ranger, here’s how it goes down:

- I enter an area, move towards nodes
- Since I run speed sigil on weapons, I 1-tab-1-tab-1-tab-1 between mobs with my longbow to get them all to gather on me.
- I drop a flame trap while I gather the node.
- My pet kills stuff while I gather and I do a last few hits with sword or bow.

I like doing this because I get the occasional piece of chicken or a claw or some meat and it also gives me minutes of swiftness which is nice.

I can’t do this on my other dudes because they lack the range and it wouldn’t be very efficient. So my other dudes pretty much ignore mobs altogether or kill the single one that follows and reaches me while I gather a node.

My point is that there are so few mobs anywhere that magic find doesn’t get to proc much and therefore isn’t useful or as useful as it was before the orr-nerf that lowered mob density tremendously.

With the shift to more bag-based looting, MF is even less useful.

So what I’d like to see is higher mob density. This makes the world a bit more dangerous but also more rewarding. I kind of miss doing small havoc teams in Cursed Shore because moving by yourself was hazardous.

Yeah but the flags dude! One of the things I like about keep claiming is having my guild colors on it.

Whichever guild adds the most bonuses gets to have their flag shown. And if it is a tie, whoever added their bonuses first.

- Let mesmer feedback and other “reflect projectile” skills work vs arrow carts. It doesn’t need to damage the ac. Deflection is enough.

- Add new siege types:

- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantlet A mantlet is just a wooden (somewhat portable) wall with a slit to see through. Could maybe make a cool sylvari umbrella tree or some asuran construction that shields against arrows for x amount of damage.

- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavise The pavise is a very large shield a crossbowman would put down and hide behind.

- Maybe lock the person on the ac into first person view mode or similar

- Or do nothing and let the hellfire rain down upon them

Get a copper fed salvage o matic. It’s amazing.

You think “hm, it’s expensive with gems and all” but you will NOT have buyer’s remorse. You’ll start loving the thing.

Just imagine. It takes only one bagslot, so no need to bring multiple kits. It never runs out, so you can salvage on the fly so you save even more bag space. It’s worth it in so many ways. I may even buy more of them for all my chars.

Don’t kitten your entire armor set just to get swiftness. Instead, do what I do and get SIGIL of speed. Every time you kill something, you get a swiftness boon. I’ve had it stack up to and over 5 minutes before.

1 sigil slot vs 6-7 rune slots

Something to think about.

Maybe you like whatever sigil you have, for damage boosts and what not.

I personally think I have a speed sigil on my shortbow. Every profession I have has a speed sigil somewhere. I don’t always use that weapon, but still, for pve, non-dungeons, it’s usually equipped.

2nd Character Leveling Slower Than 1st?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Don Zardeone.8730

Don Zardeone.8730

I got my 8 80s a long time ago, before the NPE. I maxed 80 on my first char around 3 days after release. The second char took so much longer. The third one went faster and I got a system and then I 80ed every new char in 24 hours each char.

My system probably doesn’t work any more due to the NPE.

It also differs between professions. Ranger was slow until I went full on melee cleave. Mesmer was slow and stayed slow. Engineer wasn’t my style with too much button pressing.

Melee cleave weapons are great though, you get a bit of aoe at point blank and can tag a lot of mobs in events. Large mob count events is how I made my exp.

Tequatl fight - revive others or not?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Don Zardeone.8730

Don Zardeone.8730

Rez the single downed people. Sometimes, kittens happen and you get downed. Double down (fully dead) people should respawn.

Warriors will always bring battle standard to the fight (please?) and will throw that down when multiple people die. So Single downs may get rezzed during those times. Some other classes have similar skills.

Tequatl cannot be critted. You can’t do critical damage to teq, so precision and ferocity stats do nothing. To maximise damage, you need high power. That’s your power from equipment and power from might. You also get power from banner of strength and some other skills n traits.

Since you can only use power, that leaves 2 stats open and people usually bring PTV armor. Power, Toughness, Vitality, also known as Soldier’s armor.

If you have a wvw defensive set that’s fine too. This is usually ptv or knights or similar but ptv is preferred because ithas power primary stat.

When using defensive armor and stats, and knowing how to dodge or jump over the waves, and sticking close to the commander, you’ll rarely die.

I myself, when I’m in the zerg, offer a bet to anyone willing to take it. 1g if I die, 1g if they die. Nobody has taken me on yet. If they had I’d be so much richer. Then again I only started doing this recently, so we’ll see.

Why stay close to commander? Because the turrets will try to land their buffs on the commander. This means whoever is close to commander will get turret buffs. Also, all the people who know what they’re doing will be close to commander so you get all their boons and trait buffs too. Commander will also usually stand in double or triple damage spots so teq dies faster. The faster teq dies or the shorter the period of time we’re in a non-burn (the time where teq and other stuff comes to attack you and damage you) the better.
And then there’s also the fact that turrets prioritise cleansing the commander spot.

Here’s a cool anecdote:

I usually get a build and a position where, if things go south (as in, go bad), I can step in and save the day. I’ve frequently stepped in as a necro and held a defensive spot by myself while the downed party runs back. One time 3 different positions got wiped one after the other and I held those areas to prevent mobs from reaching the turrets.

Few days ago I was on one of the hills teams in a teq that was prepped haphazardly. I noticed the damage wasn’t coming in very well. Our team didn’t need me that much so I went in to check what the zerg was doing.

The zerg had a pin but the pin didn’t stand in the right spot. The person was using a ranged build and kept moving around, making it hard for turrets to focus on one particular area. The pin died and I asked for a DPS pin and more pins popped up but they all died one after the other. I told my team I’d go take over as zerg pin and I wouldn’t be coming back to my def position. I pinned up at the melee spots and stayed there, stayed alive, held strong and we recovered. Got first burn, didn’t go directly to battery phase but a minute or so later. Second burn, instant phase. Third burn win with 40 seconds left on the clock.

Key here was a stable pin. As soon as people had a focus point that doesn’t go all over the place, the map recovered and won.

This anecdote relates to ressing because as soon as we stabilised, the amount of people who died went down significantly. Turrets had a solid target point, zerg had a solid stacking points, ranged eles had a solid conjured weapon dropoff point, defensive and healing boons and skills had a solid target point.

People who still die in this situation:
- Don’t know what they’re doing yet (notice the “yet”, they’ll hopefully learn eventually)
- Are trying something new (which is good, we need innovators)
- Are having bad luck (it happens)

If you don’t know what you’re doing then ressing you means you’ll probably die again. It’s better to run back and change equipment on the run than it is to take several people out of the fight multiple times.

If you’re trying something new and it fails, you probably need more experience at the new thing or the new thing probably doesn’t work which means you’ll die again, same issue.

If you’re having bad luck but you know what you’re doing you’ll do the swim back because you know it’s important to just port and run than it is to stay and take people’s time.

Gem Store Harvesting Tools

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Don Zardeone.8730

Don Zardeone.8730

The merchant bought tools don’t offer a major goldsink. The sink is so tiny it’s almost non-existant. The 1000 gems tools on the other hand are a massive goldsink because many people buy gems with gold.

Buying gems with money to equip 8 chars of all 8 professions would cost about 288 euros.

Buying it with gold would be a bad investment since you’re not going to make back that amount. 36000 gems that is.

So people buy a pick, maybe the others and then just swap them between characters. I myself only have the one pick because I mostly hit the rocks. I swap them between chars.

I’m not going to buy any more of them… unless I get a discount.

Like the first pick is 1000, the second is 500, the third 250, then 125, then 75, etc. For identical ones. It gives a cool discount and rewards frequent buyers.

About the turbulent history. On GH we had lots of WvW guilds but there was a power struggle that encompassed all aspects of GW2. It was mostly in WvW at first with there being attempts to create alliances and guilds suddenly wanting to tell other guilds what to do.

The self-proclaimed leaders would give orders to other guilds and obviously these other guilds didn’t like it that much. The orders were bad anyway because it didn’t play to the strengths of those specific guilds. For example, a guild with over 500 members would be told to do things a small guild could do.

This led to massive server-internal issues such as entire groups refusing to res other entire groups and eventually a decline in WvW rank for the server. Many guilds left.

The self-proclaimed leaders then decided to take over PvE. In PvE there were still some guilds left and some of those planned their own events and provided services for the entire server. The self-proclaimed leaders decided they owned the server and its guilds. They even went as far as to claim they owned these guilds, their sites and their services.

To make matters worse, they started planning their events on top of the timeslots of the events of the other guilds, causing chaos and making it hard for those guilds to play the game the way they want to. They even copied the work of these smaller guilds and claimed it as their own.

Essentially, the self-proclaimed leaders did in PvE what they did in WvW and many guilds left PvE as well.

About the making of exceptions. It’s not about exceptions, it’s about definition and precedent. As it stands the rules are intentionally vague and open ended. If they continue to force namechanges on people without reason why or with complete totalitarian power, they never define or explain the rules, allowing them ban everything. Even a generic name like John Smith can then be banned because someone doesn’t like that John Smith has a dog and they’re a cat person.

So I had to change the name of my char. It was a Charr Fire Ele named Tandori Firefarter.

I’m really bummed out by this. He was a mule but every time I saw his goofy face in my selection screen life just seemed a little less bad.

I had been thinking of doing an in-game stand-up routine with him and had been bugging my guildmates with fart jokes of the “huehue” kind. You know, the ones that get groans.

Like “What do you call an Asura Synergetics Master who only farts when he’s alone?”
A PRIVATE TOOTOR
Huehuehue

I even had an entire backstory for him. How he wanted to be a wizard, a true master of the elements. His incompetence and flatulence didn’t allow for it though. He learned slower than others, was laughed at, was never popular with the Charr girls. He was a great Chef though. His favourite ingredients included beans of all types, onions, and orrian truffles. He discovered that he could manipulate fire, though in an indirect way. His dream of becoming a master of the elements may have been out of his reach. But becoming a master of the flame was now a possibility, nay, a reality!

I was going to put the chef/butcher’s outfit on him, even level him, once there was a sale on charslots so I could move the stuff to another char. The self-inflicted burning would be like an experiment gone wrong. He’d also get a friend in the sous-chef. He’d finally see the world.

But alas, his name was deemed inappropriate. His legacy is one that will never be. Today the laughter died. He never meant to hurt anyone. All he wanted to do was give a smile and a wink. Now he is but a generic mule.

Goodbye sweet prince

Is there really nothing that can be done? Was it really that bad? =’(

I disagree with the notion that looks should be meaningful. The reason is that if a look is meaningful yet ugly, it’s still ugly.

I don’t want to wear something I don’t like the look of just to be able to show I did something or I have a certain amount of stats. GW1 had this at first and so did many other games. You essentially become one of the millions of people who did that thing and now have to wear that skin.

I like armors that look funtional yet stylish. Function over form and add as much form as function allows. I’ll never wear oversized pauldrons with 2m spikes. My armor will never show skin besides my head and if needed, hands.

If there was a skin only one person could ever get and this skin showed that this person was the best player in the world and he’d get all the oohs and aahs for it, and this skin has a giant helmet, spikes and blades all over, a cleavage air-hole and glows in the dark and sparkles in sunlight, and I was the person to win it, I wouldn’t wear it.

My Tequatl rant

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Don Zardeone.8730

Don Zardeone.8730

The hardest part about beating Tequatl is getting into the map, the rest is easy. So how to beat Tequatl?

1. Go to Sparkfly Fen
2. Find someone who is in SF Main or in the appropriate overflow
3. Join party
4. Rightclick “Join in sparkfly fen” and press space
5. Repeat 4 until joined
6. If entered, kill Teq, if not go to 7
7. Go to forum and write rant

Step 5 is the hardest part because it takes a long time to do and it wears out your mouse. In my case, I have nerve issues, hernias and I can’t keep doing the same click stuff over and over again.

While I’m writing this a guy in my guild said "why do people show up late and expect to still get in?

Why do I have to get there 2 hours before the event and stand around keeping my char logged in? This isn’t even allowed. I have to break EULA stuff so I can do an event?

While writing this another guild member got kicked to char select screen and now can’t get in there anymore.

Teq only dies after reset on my server. At any other time the area is empty. Nobody is there except for some random dead guy. I can’t solo it, I can’t duo it. I could get a big organised group together but then I’d have to wait 2 hours before the thing even spawns.

Extend the killtimer to 1 hour. Now pugs, noodles, randoms of all kinds can show up, fail a few times, struggle, make mistakes and actually kill the thing.

The way it is now, if you don’t have an organised group before the event, waiting 2 hours for it to spawn, you will not kill it and you’re better off not bothering. Why? Because one mistake means the entire fight is lost.

Extending the time to super long means mistakes can be made and less organised groups can do it. Teq will be killed outside of just that one time after reset and you can still call for help in guild “Hey guys, need more for teq” and they’ll be able to arrive while the thing is up.

Before anyone whines about epic fights and doing it faster and showing how good you are: give a speedclearing reward. Like do it in less than 15 mins to whatever the time is now, you get an additional chance of special items or a gold bonus. GW1 did it in factions, why not here.

The goal of this thread is to entice the devs to look at teq and make it an event you can do without arriving at 12PM and having to stay up until 3 AM. Make it doable at other times.

I now have 8 level 80s, all professions level 80. This was a goal of mine for the purpose of buildmaking. I wanted to know how every profession plays in pve so I could more easily see which roles they fulfil.

With that said, every skill, afaik, has some sort of basic feature and can be modified through traits or even equipment. Unlike other games where you have a skill and that’s it (GW1 comes to mind a bit :p) in GW2, you modify your skills and in that way have a great variety in skills without having all those skills.

GW2 skills are like the introverted deep person that doesn’t talk much but once you take the time to get to know them a whole new world is opened up for you and you discover things you at first hadn’t thought about.

I don’t mind picking up the odd banner because the bonuses these banners give are awesome. more critchance and 15% more damage on the precision banner, more defense, more damage. They make the events go by faster.

Loot should just auto-arrive in inventory (with option to turn that off)

PvE'er thinking of swapping GS for Hammer

I’ve used PvE hammer since day one and learned to get around defiant. Warrior gets so many interrupts that you can time the interrupts and actually interrupt bosses. On open world bosses with 20+ stacks of the stuff I just autoattack.

I haven’t played for 6 months and people seem to have gotten better. Back in the day though, if I didn’t keep permaweakness up and didn’t interrupt the big attacks bosses did in dungeons, my parties would wipe unless we had crazy people. Crazy as in, only ran that one dungeon 24/7.

Also hammer hits 5 targets by default. If GS hasn’t been buffed in the past 6 months then GS only hits 3. In open world zergs, hammer tags more stuff than GS so more loot for you.

Also… EARTHSHAKAAAAAA

Ok seriously.... (Divinity's Reach)

Armor/weaponsmit; Just how useful?

yes it is worth it
yes it is worth it on first playthrough

you get exp from it

although I wouldn’t take both armor and weaponsmithing on the same char, especially if it is your first

get chef with either armor or weaponsmithing. Much cheaper and more uses.

Advanced gathering tools: What's the point?

in Crafting

When you harvest something you have a random chance of harvesting a rare material. For wood these are little treasures, for Ore these are Jewels and for plants these are occasional dyes and whatnot.

The advanced gathering tools give you a higher chance of getting these, a bit like Black Lion tools did.

I don’t believe this is the case. I used a black lion pick and get the same amount of ores and non-ores. In fact, I have picks run completely dry, no additional stuff.

The description might mean it’s just “better”, meaning, you can use them at a lower level than normal picks.

Remember that tools below the level of the node they harvest still have a chance to actually harvest it. So higher level picks are “better”.

The definition of “better” is misleading. So the difference is only that you don’t need to be at least 60 to use them.
