Map Reward System
The map reward system could use a proper UI, as it is its very easy to forget its even happening. Additionally, I would suggest including the higher end rewards (lodestones and t6 mats) in the lower level maps as part of the rotation, so as to spread the wealth out a bit. No one really wants t3 scales. In fact I think it would be great if there was always a map that rewarded each of the top tier rewards and those maps rotated all the time (ie. week 1 you get powerful blood from one map, powerful venom from another, charged lodestones from a third, etc. Week 2 the materials are still available, but at different maps)

Specializations
Chronomancer
I’ll start with Chronomancer, I have to say I liked this one the best. The skills worked well, it felt like good support and good damage, and was generally fun. Biggest issue was with tides of time, the wave got destroyed by hitting terrains and walls, and also didnt travel far enough backwards, imo. Nothing was more dissatisfying than watching the corner of it catching on a wall and getting destroyed, or seeing it disappear just short of reaching me, in both cases denying me the cooldown reduction mechanic (which is really fun!).

Dragonhunter
I liked dragon hunter a lot, but it had a few small issues. I’d love to see a trait that made traps ground targeted and increased longbow range. As is, the traps don’t synergize very well with the longbow. Tactically setting them up beforehand doesn’t work well when you’re attempting to advance into the jungle instead of defending a point. Additionally, the low cooldown and root effect on skill 2 really hurt the mobility of the class. I understand the need for the root to balance the high damage, but the fact that its ready to use so often and is a really hard hitter (making it hard to ignore once its up) lead to the class feeling very trapped and stuck. I would suggest taking away the root, and nerfing the damage and making the cooldown slightly longer to compensate.

Reaper
Honestly this one felt really good too. A long cooldown gap closer might be nice, but I could see where that might make it a little too stong as well. It would n=be nice if the shouts provided a bit more support to the party members, as thats an area necros tend to be lacking in.

Tempest
Have to say, I was fairly underwhelmed here. My main is an ele, primarily staff, and this was the first specialization I just couldn’t see myself taking, The overload mechanic is an interesting idea, but it felt too clunky and like I wasn’t really getting enough bang for how much time went into the cast. Rebound is supremely disappointing because I often found my autoattack eating the cooldown reduction, and I can only imagine how much worse that is when it shows up on allies. They probably wouldn’t even notice it. On the flip side, warhorn was surprisingly enjoyable, i have to say nice job with that one.

Masteries
I like the general outline for time investment, I calculated the exp required to complete all the magumma masteries to be roughly equivalent to earning 266 levels. I think that’s a pretty solid timeline, provided that we see new masteries added on a somewhat regular basis. The one thing I would change is how the current system of spending points and training works. Earning mastery points is a nice reward for content, because it feels like youre being rewarded with progression for your work. But if you don’t have a line already trained, your gratification is delayed because you can’t spend a point. Meanwhile, leveling up and finishing training of a mastery should feel like the culmination of effort, yet if you have no mastery points at the time, it means that you really just passed a roadblock. The current system doesnt play to the strengths of the different reward systems involved. I would reverse it, spend the point first and then do the training, that way you get the feeling of success when and progress by earning a mastery point and getting to spend it right away, and the sense of culmination when training is complete by getting to put start using the new skill right away.

Verdant Brink
The new map is an absolute blast. So much to explore and see. I love gliding around, one of the most fun thing in the game right now. I like the events that were working, but I have to say that the one where explosives were being laid to get into the temple took way too long. That one could definitely stand to be toned down quite a bit, since not much happens if you’re doing well, but you still can’t make it go any faster. With the hylek village, I think it would be better if you weren’t able to communicate with the villagers at all until you had the language mastery. As it was, it felt weird that I would try to talk to the merchants and get a “you can’t understand each other” dialogue and then immediately have a complex conversation with the village elders.

Revenant
Revenant felt really good. I think sword/sword could use a little more PBAoE, or a slight damage boost, because its relatively high risk but it doesn’t feel like it hits much harder than the other options. I would buff the damage on shiro skill 8 a bit, because as it is Shiro has fairly low damage for a legendary assassin, even if his skills are more about setting up damage potential.

How to rebuild LA

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

I’m sure theres already a plan in place for how to rebuild LA, but I had a really cool idea for how to do it and felt like sharing.

1. Set up relief effort events all over the world, wherein various local groups are gathering supplies. So Charr engineers in ascalon ore and scrap, human architects gathering lumber, sylvari mendors collecting seeds and sapplings, etc etc. The events can entail collections, escorts, killing bosses guarding the areas, whatever.

2. Participation rewards various amounts of (Human/Charr/Lionguard/Sylvari/Asura/Norn/whatever else you want to include) Relief Tokens.

3. In LA there are various reconstruction coordinators, each associated with specific areas or buildings. (So, a gate hub rebuilder, a plaza rebuilder, eastern housing, western housing etc etc)

4. Players turn their tokens into these coordinators. Once enough tokens have been turned in that building or area becomes queued for rebuilding with you guys.

5. The design of the building is dependent on which type of token had the greatest turn in rate. So if lots of charr token are turned in for the gate hub, we get a hub that looks like the black citadel.

Sorry this plan is fairly complex, I know its probably got way too many issues to be implemented but I think it would be a really cool way to make us feel like we were actually rebuilding LA so I figured I’d post it here anyway. I’m sure whatever ends up happening will be great, keep up the excellent work guys.

Where does Scarlet get her resources?

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

ITT: People acting like scarlet is the first video game villain to have plot breaking unlimited source of resources.

If Kralkatorik stopped sending the Shatterer to fight us every 3 hours, and just kept the new ones in reserve for a week, he would have 56 dragons, which I’m pretty sure could wreck most of ascalon. Same for Jormag and the Claw. The population of bandits and pirates in the human territory would be enough to completely overflow any city by sheer volume.

Are they plot holes. Sort of. Are they bad writing? No. They’re handwaves done because it makes for better gameplay. Reduce it to the degree that makes sense for you, and call that lore. Is scarlet still a little over the top? Yeah, but not nearly as bad as you people are making her out to be

Another overflow nightmare in the making

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

So there’s really two (major, still lots of sub-proposals) crowds of people complaining about overflows, and I think its important to distinguish that. You have the people who are frusturated that they can’t play with their friends. To them I think the general consensus, is yeah, it definetly sucks to a certain degree, but you have the Taxi system, so you’re not that bad off while Anet works out a solution for you. Then you have the Anet needs to magically summon up the server space to hold all of the players that want to do an event. These people either lack basic the understanding of computer systems and money required to understand what they request is impossible, expect anet to develop 10x as much content so that we can have epic invasions spread out across the maps, or are pro trolls. Whichever it is, they are immune to logical argument, so lets just leave them out of this and have an otherwise reasonable discussion

Another overflow nightmare in the making

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

Or are you saying overflows in general are a nightmare?

I haven’t been a fan of overflow since it was invented, as a response to the karka catastrophe. Shortly after that event we players had a chance to fill out a survey from Anet itself and the responses were overwhelming; that Anet doesn’t develop these super massive events very well.

Since then we’ve been given large scale boss invasions that have triggered overflows and in my opinion overflow technology is not a good bandaid for events that attract large numbers of players, never mind the massive numbers we had for the karka event, and what we will get again next week.

Many players can’t even get a map to load, never mind play with friends. Events start to fail and the resulting imbalance in rewards is really distasteful. Lions Arch might end, but it wont end well.

Overflows have been in the game since well before launch, they were added as a way to combat server limitations, and not in response to the karka at all, optimizations have been made in response to the karka event. As far as designing events that are too popular, i have no clue what to tell you. Maybe they should make bad content so they don’t have as many players, I guess that’s the only real solution.

EU Overflow tier1 servers

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

FYI overflows aren’t the problem. It’s really getting annoying, the people who say they do more harm than good. The deal isn’t: “overflows instead of crowding everyone into main” it’s “overflows instead of waiting in a queue” So your option is to do the event in overflow, with a chance at success (it can be done believe it or not), or stare at a queue and do nothing. If you don’t feel like this is actually an option since the game just puts you in an overflow anyway, you can simulate it by going and standing in a safe corner of the map and stare at your screen while doing nothing.

A disturbing trend

in Living World

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

I’ve noticed a disturbing trend with these Living Story updates.

Players don’t seem to believe in reading.

See every patch people complain about not knowing where to go or what to do. And I’ll admit that for a while in the beginning they did a pretty bad job informing us in game. But now we get a detailed mail in game at the start of every patch telling us where to go to get started. You do the thing there and then the Gold panel in the corner updates with where to go next.

But players don’t seem to want to read that.

It seems that many players need the game to literally reach through their screen and slap them with the information.

Yeah absolutely once per account. I feel like once a week would be even better than once per day, that way people feel compelled to journey outside of just a few zones while they play hitting up familiar events. As far as how much to give, 10s was just spitballing, but I definitely think group events should reward more than regular events

Looking at your list, some of those things were under the category of “working towards but may or may not happen this year” and some have since been moved to the category of "at risk of not making it this year, but heres my thoughts on it:

- The rest of the crafts to 500 and ascended armor (expect to coincide with the new fractals because its what the gear was originally made for)
- New sPvP rewards system (possibly legendaries in sPvP) (honestly no idea when this woud come, pvp stuff tends to just kind of happen)
- Scavenger Hunt or craftable precursors (possibly the same thing) (been moved to at risk but if it happens I would expect with the new legendary stuff as one big overhaul patch)
- New legendary weps and a new type of legendary (working towards but if it happens I expect it in the first december update)
- New skills and traits (working towards, but we are getting a new skill this patch)
- If i’m not mistaken the council election also promised a new fracs level (this year?) (expect it at November 12th to coincide with the one year anniversary of fractals. Also its 4 months after the election meaning theres been a full development cycle to produce them)

Dragons, dangerous, but they can wait

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dra Keln.2015

Dra Keln.2015

So a lot of people feel like the elder dragons should be a bigger threat, and thakittens ridiculous that we’ve not touched on them since release. I’m here to help explain how that’s ok, and how why they are still a problem that needs to be dealt with eventually. First of all, we must remember that Primordus has been awake for 200 years, Zhaitan, 150, Jormag 50, and Kralkatorrik 6. They are destructive, nearly indestructible forces, yet life has continued fairly unchanged. Yes they are an ever present threat, but they aren’t imminently destroying everything. So why even worry about them at all?

Here’s the thing. Dragons eat magic. They consume it, and search for it, and that’s what leads to them destroying magical based civilizations. This is why they are dangerous. It is brought up in the Asura storyline because that makes Rata Sum a prime target. The reasons the dragons haven’t attacked it yet is the same as why they aren’t a major concern at this point in time. Location Location Location.

Primordus lives underground, with the ruins of Asura civilization. There were over half a dozen grand Asura cities that make Rata Sum look like a play pen. There were dwarven villages, and skritt hidey holes. Primordus has enough magic down there to last him an eon.

Jormag is in the Northern Shiverpeaks. Norn homesteads, ancient Jotun magic, not quite as rich as the depths of Tyria, but he’s only been there for 50 years so he’s doing ok.

Kralkatorrik is hanging out in the crystal desert, where Turai Ossa took his people for ascension. It’s littered with their relics. He also has Glint’s highly magical corpse to snack on. There’s no way he’s wanting after only 6 years of wake time.

Zhaitan was awakened with the most magical human city on top of him, he had no need to leave for 150 years, likely only conducting his attacks because his home came with a move in ready undead army, so he might as well do something with it.

In short, the dragons are a threat, because when they do get hungry, they are capable of destroying all that we hold dear in an instant. But they aren’t imminent until the run out of free food where they are.
