Time to refocus and clarify GW2's goals?

After 2 years of being all over the place with the content you really have the nerve to tell us you don’t lack direction?

Everthing you said in the beginning or in the manifest trailer has changed in the game.

On top of that, your game is not fun to play anymore. It’s full of stuns, knockbacks, 1-hit mechanics, sloppy hitboxes and inacurrate or missing telegraphs.

For a company that iterates so much on the ‘FUN’ part you missed what fun really means. I’ve yet to find another game that makes me so angry in a short amount of time than this.

Camera - Please implement 'Smart pivot'

Hey!

As the title says, please implement ‘smart pivot’.

What the camera does now:

You look up, the camera hits the ground and moves forward till your character completely obfuscates the view.

With smart pivoting, when the camera hits the ground it doesn’t move forward. It stays at the position where the camera hits the ground and further looking up tilts the camera also up.

I hope we could see this feature in the future.

Greetings!

Uggh, you must have been a noob at GW1 for sure… Did you actually do FowSc or UwSc or any speedclear at all? GW1 is 100% horizontal. You can create a character, get him to 20, and you can go where ever you like to go. You want to do fow? you run to toa, you want to finish all missions, fine you’ll do that, you want to vanquish stuff, fine. There is nothing you need to do before to start those things. Buying max armor is cheap, so are runes & max weapons. And you can get them anywhere, any time you want.

Skills? you can unlock them from level 1 with tomes. How can you say that the skill system creates vertical prog.??? it’s not like you have to buy skill A to get skill B.. You choose whatever skill you’d like first. Ughh >_<

Please.. don’t talk kitten about gw1 if you don’t know how the game works.

Oh man, there’s so much rose colored kitten here.

First of all, you can’t just do things. There’s always several pre-requisites. Why do I say that? Because I played an elementalist that started in prophecy and had a hard time doing content related stuff in Nightfall. Sure, you had no problems when you have a Nightfall character who played the story quests anyway, but if you didn’t, you had to do a LOOOOT of unnecessary stuff to get to the stuff you actually need.

Tomes? Certainly not all of them. For my good skills I had to go to mobs and use Signet of Capture to get it.

And with this skill system the progression was vertical. My ele played like kittening kitten till I captured all the skills to get a proper build. I couldn’t play PvP, I couldn’t play the endgame parts of PvE because my character and henchmen were so underwhelming. Horizontal my kitten

Well, GW2 is pretty much the same dungeon crawler as every other MMO.

Portal should be a PvE skill only.

It’s also quite annoying in Khylo. Doesn’t seem intended that one skill, that has no equivalent on any other class is so massively overpowered when used correctly.

Ok, guys. I realize that this proposal doesn’t work. At least not in an live environment.

Lowering prices would just further encourage people to buy more gem store items with gold.

My only thought would be increasing the gems you get for dollars. Still, the system is too finicky to just change/balance some values.

So, what’s the general opinion here?
Take gold to gem conversion out of the equation.
Are the gem store items like inventory/bank expansions too expansive or are they just right?
If they are too expansive, do you feel you’d buy more if they are cheaper?

Vilidius, you interpreted a lot into my post that I wasn’t saying.

First of all, I don’t want anything for free. Not sure where this is coming from.
Fact is, none of my friends put real money into the game because the money:reward ratio is lower than gold:reward.

Realistically speaking I make some runs in FotM, get an exotic that I sell for some gold and then surely have 2.50g for an inventory slot.

You argue that that’s the way to go. I say, no, that shouldn’t be the (only) way. Gems/Gold should be on equal footing and it will never be with the current prices.

Gem prices for gold are skyrocketing. Why is that? Because not enough people are BUYING gems. That’s it.

Instead of further discouraging people, they should be motivated to drop some dollars onto a bank tab. But again, people don’t do it because it’s too expansive. They wait till they have enough gold and then convert it.

Dropping real money should feel exclusive. It does in every F2P game. Here it isn’t exclusive. Gold is exclusive and that should NOT be.

As I said in my initial post. The Valve business model proofed again and again that you’ll get more sales when the price is right. Nowhere did I state that it should be free, just cheaper.

Furthermore, after the costs of inv slot, bank tab you also have character slots (which I find appropriate for 800) and Mystic Forge Stones. There’s a lot to spend here and they surely won’t stop with newer items.

It would cost 2.84g when you use the current Gold→Gem conversion for an inventory slot.

It’s not that cheap. You won’t get gold so easily when you just ‘play’ the game. At least my income comes from selling globs and exotics.

Also, this is a recurring thing. You won’t stop at 1 inventory/bank expansion, do you?

Hey there!

Right now we have the following costs for inventory and bank slots:

400 gems – Inventory
600 gems – Bank tab

I get 800 gems for 10€. That equals in:
5€ – Inventory
7.50€ – Bank tab

Don’t you think that’s a little steep? Why don’t you follow in the footsteps of Valve’s business model with cheap prices, but more customers?

Not only would it enable more players to actually buy more Inventory/Bank slots. It further encourages more people to buy gems and smooth out the spike gold->gem conversion rate. (Which is an absolute joke right now, seriously)

My proposal for the prices:
200 gems (2.50€) – Inventory
300 gems (3.75€) – Bank tab

What do you think?

Ok, guys. I realize that this proposal doesn’t work. At least not in an live environment.

Why Is This Concept So Hard To Grasp?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Because it’s not well implemented? I mean if PvE had something like the PvP locker things would be a lot more interesting.

But we haven’t.

And instead of collecting visually different pieces we have to use the clunky fine transmutation stones, which to add insult to injury, are always needed when you’re 80, so what should I do with all the basic ones?

Furthermore you can only get fine transmutation stones in the cash shop.

I wanted to like the concept of collecting gear but with the current implementation. No thank you.

Exactly, only this time it’s not that we want a higher FoV of 75°. It’s, fix your calculations on aspect ratios that are different to 4:3 so we can get at LEAST the intended FoV.

When this is done, the discussion about the too low FoV can continue.

At this point I hope that at least one developer read this and took an honest look at this issue.

My question is that, why is your HUD missing from second screen. Your screen shots to me clearly spam TROLL. Sorry but it just looks like you cropped the picture. FOV bug or not HUD should be displayed. Seeing no HUD also seems even more like you just cropped it to cut the lions head off.

I hope this clears your doubts. I’ve taken the same scene, this time both with the UI.

Why aren’t skills based around type of weapon AND model?

I actually thought that it is that way when I first learned about GW2. That you could have different swords for different purposes like bleedings, direct dmg or mobility.

That was a letdown when I learned it’s nothing like I imagined it. ^^ Well, and later on the trait system was introduced which made me even more skeptic.

I can’t say that the system is terrible but it certainly is a step backward from GW1.

And yeah, GW1 had such a huge amount of freedom. Things like the 55hp builds. That was some outside of the box thinking!

Hello all!

A lot of people have brought up the issue that the vertical FoV seems alright with 4:3 aspect ratio. I made a lot of tests with different resolutions/aspect ratios and I can only say, YES, it’s true.

Here’s a screenshot comparison taken with max zoom:
4:3 (custom resolution 1920×1440) – the lion’s head is clearly visible
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35298245/gw598.jpg
16:9 (my default resolution 2560×1440) – the lion’s head is cut at the eyes
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/35298245/gw597.jpg

But not only that, a fellow reddit poster, Boojum, has more to backup this claim. You could say he reverse engineered the FoV values. The method he used is not completely accurate but we’re not interested in +/- 5°.

Here’s the link:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/118t3a/fov_is_anets_math_bugged/

So what he found out is not only that the vertical FoV isn’t 75° with 16:10 aspect ratios but that the vertical FoV is even a lot smaller than expected. 44°! (And you wonder why you have tunnel vision)
With that knowledge we can also say that the vertical FoV isn’t 75° in 16:9 either.

At this point someone has to do the math but I believe the intended FoV is only correct in 4:3 aspect ratios!

So my sincerest apology for bringing up yet another FoV thread but this time it’s not about a slider or some opinion. It’s FACT and a really nasty bug!

I hope this post reaches a developer who can take a look at this issue.
Thank you!

Darmikau, you should honestly pick up crafting to make armor or find someone who can make it. You’ll have a full exotic set in no time. There are also some really good crafting guides on reddit. I think one even claimed that you can get to 400 with just ~4g.

If you decide to let it craft. The basic materials (orichalcum, gossamer, …) are rather cheap and very farmable, the materials that decides the stats vary a LOT from dirt cheap to rather expansive and the ectos went down to around 17s when I last checked. Overall, it shouldn’t be a problem.

I know gold farming to get max stats is frustrating as hell, so don’t do it. I even think ANET designed it that way that you get your exotics via crafting.

I think the combat in this game feels very stale.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Enzi.5496

Enzi.5496

What I think is missing is dmg BUILDUP. It certainly is weird because GW1 had that to some degree and is also WoW’s most exciting reason why combat feels great and rewarding. And no, I’m not talking about ‘rotations’.

As a result of this everything is rather bursty, it honestly takes the fun for me out of PvP. After some time everything is predictable. It’s missing tension and excitement. When the warrior comes I just wait for 100blades and dodge it, now he’s useless and I take him down. Same with Thiefs.

But it’s not even the fault of the players there. There is simply not enough toolsets you can play around with.

Only skill I can think of right now that has something like a ‘buildup’ is Feast of Corruption on my necro. Deals additional damage for every condition on my target. Problem is, it’s completely underwhelming in damage and I don’t even know if takes the amount of bleeding stacks into account. (it seems it doesn’t)

So, yeah. I agree with a lot in this thread. Combat feels stale and it’s hardly skill based.

Skill in GW2 is a result of:
- your chosen build as in, you can get your skill on the internetz
- knowledge of the enemy (and this boils down to a few burst skills and some nasty debuffs you have to watch out for like confusion/bleeds)
- good leader (tPvP only)
- actual player skill

It’s sad, but when someone can create a lvl1 mesmer(just an example, don’t hate on me mesmers ), go to the forum, take a build and roflstomp in PvP you know that you don’t have a very good competitive PvP game.

They said they want to make more content than any MMO ever got and have several teams to do so.

If this will be true, I can’t say, but it sure as hell looks promising. I’m one those who are a little disappointed by their current PvE endgame but if they add content in a timely manner I’ll be more than happy. At least they go this route and don’t just add dungeons/raids every content patch. I’ve lost interest in dungeon crawling when I saw how the open world in GW2 works.

It seems too good to be true in addition to being a B2P MMO but let’s wait and see what they have in store for us in the next month.

Why I do not play in lower level zones

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I find going back to low level zones as 80 boring. When you have good gear you decimate everything without a scratch. Honestly, scaling doesn’t work really well. I’m not one-shotting mobs but it’s hardly the same as when I’m leveling.

So I just take a different route. I level a new class and go to zones I’ve never really been and make 100%. Overall it’s frustrating that I won’t have 100% world completion anytime soon with this method but it works better for me. And hey, it’s all about having fun, right?

@Jestunhi: With a 3rd person camera you can always look around corners. Even with the default FoV.

From this list I’d say the GW2 camera tool isn’t bannable. Heck, if it would be for these reasons they would need to ban every single one who has more than 1 monitor and ban everyone who uses weird, as in, non-standard resolutions.

Out of curiosity I set a custom 4:3 resolution (black bars at the sides) and it actually feels like the game was made with this resoultion in mind..

I tried this too and I thought the same thing! You can actually see the sky. The more I played around with different resolutions the more I came to the conclusion that they just kittened up the calculations for the horizontal/vertical FoV for widescreen monitors.

Oh and I also want to add that I’ve taken a look at the GW2 camera tool. It certainly helps but it doesn’t really solve the problem.

edit: rewritten this part because it was confusing
Let me explain: You don’t actually change the FoV per se. (Technically you do) What you modify is the aspect ratio. But the ratio is botched from the beginning with widescreen monitors. You CAN bring it to a value so the vertical FoV is comfortable but that leads to the technical problems Jon was talking about. I tried this in Orr and after some minutes I had frame issues. Result, absolutely unplayable! To get the vertical FoV to a good value the horizontal value had to be so high that my computer couldn’t handle it. (Geforce 580GTX and i7, so I have not the highest end system but high)

I made so many tests, screenshots and comparisons over the last few days and I can only say that the 4:3 aspect ratio is the most comfortable one. As I said, I also tried out the tool to see if this is really the answer to all our problems but for me personally I must admit it’s not.

Maybe a mod can ask a dev why 4:3 is so different to 16:9. It SHOULD have the same vertical FoV but it doesn’t!

Here’s a screenshot comparison taken with max zoom:

Yeah, every time I want to rush in this zone I die. Horrible.

Brings me to this little story where I wanted to get the last POI in cursed shore for 100%. It was the most south east one at the beach. When I got there, there were a lot of dead players. As I’m a friendly guy I rezzed every single one of them and thought, why don’t you just do the event when you’re there. There were around 30 little lvl 84 worms and I just pulled them all, because, why not, I have epidemic! I died, no one else seemed to have the same thought process as me and there I was lying. 10 metres from the last POI I needed. A train of players, at least 10, ran past me in a circle. Bots? I don’t know. I just raged really hard at this point.

Every single waypoint in the south was contested and I had to resurrect in the middle of the map. Time was precious, so I just ran, ignoring the mobs and I died. After 3 completely unnecessary deaths and nerdrages later I started to take it slow and get the kitten POI.

Mission accomplished. What have I learned? Don’t kittening rush!

For the time being i’m using a custom res via nvida custom res.

From 1920×1080 to 2194×1080, sure it has small bars at the top and bottom – but it requires no hacks and it doesn’t require window mode, simply select the new res ingame (no breach in any rules whatsoever).

Top pic standard 1080p, bottom pic custom 1080p. Given the choice of the current FOV without bars and the custom res FOV with bars, i’d rather have the latter – in saying this though i have a 32" monitor so the bars mean nothing really.

Thank you for this workaround!
At least now I don’t have to play in windowed mode. Yet another proof that changing the horizontal FoV doesn’t result in errors. (Vertical FoV wouldn’t either but I don’t want to use hacking tools to test this!)

Funny that Jon brings WoW and HL as examples. Where in WoW we have absurd camera distances to get awareness and in HL(2) the fixed FoV created such an outrage that Valve changed it and never made this mistake again.

@souldonkey.9534: Don’t get mixed up. The industry standard for wide screen gaming (16:9 – 16:10) is considered 90°. It certainly can be lower with 4:3 monitors but these are rare to non existent anymore. The FoV is highly dependant on screen resolution and ratio, in fact, the FoV is a direct result of the ratio. (https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Field_of_View)

Now FoV was never a big issue to the point where console developers had to reduce the FoV as a workaround to reduce the visible object on screen so they can still render at 30fps. Personally I think this is horrible, but this is where the industry has led us to with these long console cycles. We don’t have this issue on the PC but developers still think it’s alright when they do it.

Enzi.5496

Dear Jon,

thanks for addressing this, I hope we can have a constructive discussion about this so here goes:

1) performance suffers greatly because of how things are built and view distances

I don’t understand this, that’s what options are for! If you turn shadows to ultra and get a bad performance you turn it down. Also with the windowed trick I don’t get any performance hit. GW2 is still CPU bottlenecked so a little more needed performance on the GPU side won’t do much.

2) art suffers because of texture tiling, LOD problems and just general stretching from the fisheye effect.

I’ve used the windowed mode trick in Orr and some other places and I can’t say that there was any graphical glitch at all! The LOD problems on the other hand are always there, but this is independent from the FoV. Also regarding the fisheye effect. This usually occurs with a FoV higher than 90. Although it’s less visible when you have a big monitor. (I have a 16:9 27" with 2560×1440)

3) gameplay suffers because positional awareness becomes less necessary in a game where combat is greatly designed around positioning.

Positional awareness is always crucial but I don’t agree that it will suffer. Your sPvP maps are designed to always have a good angle of any entry point the enemy can come from. With a higher FoV you’d see a little more on the left and right but you still can’t see something in your back unless you pan the camera around. We’re not talking about zooming out more because there I completely agree with you!

As this is all a little vague when we don’t talk about a fixed range of values let me just say that 95 as a max value would be completely sufficient!

And just because I’m a cynic. Why do you bring up all these points when all this can be achieved with a 3 monitor setup and none of this points occur?

Especially reddit has a huge problem with it and due to reddit’s nature you can clearly see that this issue doesn’t only affect a minority you can simply ignore, it’s upvotes and comments are in the 3000+ range, even when it’s a technical problem that most people don’t even realize that they have an issue with.

I’m happily waiting for an answer, it’s not too late!

The real worry: is buying Gold ever going to be worth it?

This is, prices for gems go up which is no wonder. People dropped some bucks, got some gems and bought inv slots or bank slots. Less and less people do that now and gems get more pricey. Ok, I get that.

But why is the conversion rate from gems to gold completely different and stayed this way since release? Shouldn’t there be a 1:1 conversion rate? I honestly don’t get this system.

The way it is now I’ll never ever buy more gems with real money. Ingame gold is so easy to get and the conversion rate to gems is -still- not so bad.

Now if you want to go the illegal way, buying gold and then converting into gems gives you way more gems.

So, yeah. I’m not sure what their economists is doing.

Necro by far worst downed state.

Hm, when listing guardian, thief and mesmer you actually listed the classes with the most powerful downed skills. I don’t think necros are bad, it’s just that the downed skills of the the 3 classes are way too good, especially mesmer.

Also, ele is pretty much useless when downed. I always pity the fools as most of them just accept their defeat and not even attack.

When every class has an interrupt on it’s second skill except one it’s weird. (or two, i’m not sure if the ranger actually interrupts the finish animation)

@Ergo Proxy: In the case your name is a reference to the anime, I really like it!

No mounts - I simply don't understand...

I don’t like mounts and I respect Anet for not putting them ingame.

Is it really that great to sit on a virtual horse? I never really understood why people crave for mounts so much. I mean it’s a great way to get from A to B without scratches and running through enemy camps rofling around because mobs never actually catch you, but who needs them when you can teleport while keeping the mob experience intact? Zones like Orr would be a huge problem with mounts.

But whatever, I don’t want to be that guy that is against something just because I don’t need it. When Anet can add grounded mounts without ruining the experience they should go for it, but I think that’s why we don’t have any.

Do we really need a level cap?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Enzi.5496

Unlimited levels or no leveling at all, the outcome would be pretty much the same. The level is only there so they can stage their content better and prevent people to immediately go to ‘endgame’ zones.

I’m actually not sure what your point is as your experience bar fills up normally, you just hit a cap which is balanced around the trait system. Would it really be better or change anything when you suddenly have 81 levels? Wouldn’t the next thing that people want be ‘higher’ gear?

Also the lvl 200 armor. That’s pretty much what legendaries are. But I agree that there shouldn’t be only weapons. Some really really rare gear would be cool, not everyone is a fan of weapons. I certainly ain’t.

GW2’s fov is designed to be low. You only get sickness if you sit to close to your screen. Sit further away, problem solved.

Designs that makes a person uncomfortable is cool in art but not in a AAA mass product.

What people don’t realize is that an increased FoV will improve the experience for everyone, not just the ones who get motion sickness. And yeah, my 27" monitor is at the edge of my table, it’s maybe a solution for people with motion sickness but it doesn’t change that I don’t get a proper view of Orr or any massive building.

Ever watched the trailer and saw the brief glimpse of Orr with all it’s beauty? Ingame you can’t even see a quarter of that which is just a kitten shame.

Here's what it is, and here's what it isn't.

It is safe to say it now.. GOTY?

This year is actually pretty terrible for PC gaming and gaming in general so the bar isn’t set very high. Maybe something comes out in Q4 that can take the GOTY from GW2 but I doubt it. It’s still possible GW2 won’t be GOTY with console games mixed in, but even then, from an objective point of view, can any game say from itself that it innovated and has the sheer amount of content?

From that perspective only something as Skyrim comes close and that was last year. Actually when I look at the 2011 list on metacritic, wow, that was an awesome year.

PvP Class / Armor / Stats they need to mean something

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I don’t think stats matter that much in GW2, meaning 1000 toughness isn’t all that different from 2000 toughness.

But if stats do matter, then OP is correct. We should all roll warriors.

That’s so not true!
On my necro it varies from glass cannon (~900) to tank. (~1800) Check the calculations here: http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/60838-math-damage-reduction-toughness-and-vitality/

Toughness scales exactly like defense, therefore it reduces the incoming damage a lot!

Just do it ArenaNet!

What's the deal with Orr?

I love this zone! My only complaint would be that mob HP varies to little. When you spend some time there it feels a little mechanical. There’s no high dmg/low hp, low dmg/high hp mobs or like the poster above me said, huge numbers with low hp. It’s all a little static.

How to counter hundred blade warriors and heartseeker theives in a defensive position as a conditionmancer

- Charge
- knockdown
- 100 blades
- dead

I had no problems with thieves or 100 blade warriors in sPvP but in tPvP it’s a whole other beast.

Heartseeker got nerfed, rightfully so but you still have 100 blades that does 11-17k on my 1800+ toughness necro and sorry to say it, but that’s way too much dmg.

I play a necro, but I traid a warrior for one play session...

Hello Jon!

First of all, thanks for posting here! I’m not really sure what you mean by mastering DS but I guess it’s the timing that is crucial. I try to get this right in tPvP, but when focused really hard (and I think it went from, kill necro last to kill necro first) I often have a serious problem because I don’t have any Life Force in the beginning of a match. That’s really frustrating and I have no clue how to fight this issue.

With that in mind I also have a change request regarding the second skill in DS form. Can you make it a CC breaking backwards teleport? DS is a great “Oh crap” button but it quickly turns into “what now?”.

Overall DS is really cool but the second skill baffles me. A necro never wants to teleport offensively into his enemy. Why should he when his auto attack in DS is ranged? I don’t get this.

Other than that, just fix our bugs and pimp our auto attacks a little, please.

P.S.: Nerf 100 blade warriors!
