Despite being placed against two much larger servers, I had fun this week. Thanks for the fights various guilds from TC and FA (AW, BURN, RET, RAM, HOPE, RE, GODS, SIC) and of course a special shout out to FLOT.

I’ve seen (and been the victim) some pretty tricksy SoS and FA commanders this week. It certainly was a refreshing change from last week’s AC over-load and siege wars.

Thanks for the epic fights. Good luck in next week’s match-ups.

Keep it up combatants. What you feel right now, if being owned (to sos and fa), is how easily SOR smashed us when we were against them, with occasional victories on our part (and a constant score of below 200 at all times – meaning we had it worse than you guys are doing now).

And because TC herself wants to improve, recruiting players is simply a matter of consequence. And I think all servers seek this too.

I’m gonna be honest and say TC is very good at supply management and defending with skeleton crews (A T1 level in this regard), but there are a lot of other area’s were TC is still playing like a sub T6 server.

As a whole your server has specs and gear more suited for cof, you guys are so squishy and thats one of the reasons equal numbered fights dont go your way. You guys need to learn how to use havoc squads and multiple commanders instead of trying to accomplish everything with one large zerg. You don’t need an 80 man to take a camp or to stop 4 people with 1 ram banging on a tower.

Other than that do some open field training, get your militia involved and practice, send 15 against 30 just to see how you do and how to improve. If you keep running back to those arrow carts you will never learn what you need to learn to hold your own in T1

1. … you guys are so squishy …
___I’d have to agree with this, to a point. It’s not unusual to see a a handful of people wiped out in a few seconds by ACs. I rarely see any of the W3 dedicated guild members taking a dirt nap in the red circles. It seems to be the causal karma train member that has low HP and toughness. Definite room for improvement.

2. …You guys need to learn how to use havoc squads and multiple commanders instead of trying to accomplish everything with one large zerg….
___I agree here too. This is actually something that is in the works. There needs to be more guilds involved in planning this though.

3. …Other than that do some open field training, get your militia involved and practice, send 15 against 30 just to see how you do and how to improve.
___This is probably the best suggestion and one I hope our guild leaders consider. I’ve noticed that the militia is “starting to get it” and have really started to gel with guilds. I do however think giving them the opportunity to train with guilds would be great and help take us to the next level.

4. …if you keep running back to those arrow carts you will never learn what you need to learn to hold your own in T1
___Most serious W3 Guilds will not hunker down in a keep or Tower for long before they group up and charge out to engage. That at least has my experience. Since my guild prefers open field fighting, I guess I’ll have to have no opinion on this other than TC is far less an offender than some other servers we’ve played recently.

Cheers…

I remember one time that CERN and RE did work together and SOR still outnumbered them 2 to one. That’s when they introduced us to their Necro zerg. >.<

That was scary as kitten to see all those Necros and what they could do. The week we played SoR was the first time I had went up against a T1 server since the glory days of HoD. It was quite an eye opener.

I’ve personally seen an improvement in organization and guild cooperation on TC since that match-up.

Lords and Supervisors: should they scale?

Lords and guards go down ridiculously fast, even to a small group. If they were completely removed from the game I doubt if most people would even notice. I guess they act as a “place holder” that identifies where and when a point can be captured. They are certainly not there to offer any type of resistance.

Fighting TC is amusing actually. Their zergs – as long as you’re not in their path – will completely ignore you when they’re in transit from one objective to another.

You’re not complaining that a 80 man Zerg doesn’t veer off course to chase you down… right? ;-)

A good commander will not allow his group to go “squirrel” mode and chase a small group for a few kills. They usually have bigger fish to fry (like a undefended keep). That’s not to say it doesn’t happen of course.

If you are unfortunate to be standing in the road checking your map when the Zerg comes rolling through, you’ll be asking for the license plate of the truck that just flattened you.

In all seriousness though, props to both SoS and FA. It’s been a pleasure to fight you guys.

The very first MMORPG I played ( DAoC ) required a lot of team work and grouping to be successful. Some of my fondest memories of online gaming was of the time I spent in DAoC and the friendships I made.

The last 10 years has seen MMORPGs purposely make games “solo” friendly. Personally the trend to have everyone do their own thing and only occasionally grouping up, usually very briefly, has soured me on the online gaming. Perhaps it’s a backlash against “forced grouping” that drove this trend. Since it’s all about personal taste I wont argue the pros or cons about grouping vs solo play.

The only reason I’ve stuck with GW2 is because of WvWvW. Some people bemoan the “Zerg” mentality, but I personally enjoy the large scale fights and group interaction I find there.

So, in answer to your question, I don’t play MMOs with a single player mentality. Neither do I fault those that do. It’s your play time. Do what you enjoy!

I’ve leveled 2 professions, a Warrior and Elementalist, from 1 to 80 solely by playing in W3. What better way to learn how to play a class? I see no advantage at all to waiting until you are level 80 to start since you will likely have to re-think your traits and gear anyways.

The key points are, play defensively and play smart. If you are constantly dying then you are not doing either. Ranged attacks are your friend. Running with a large group of course is best in your early levels.

If your goal is to speed to level 80 then W3 is not for you.

As has been pointed out in other posts, if the whole idea of keeping a running score is scrapped, people would not get caught up in who is in first, second, or third place.

If the “score” was remained hidden during a match, people MAY begin to concentrate on having fun in W3 rather than becoming discouraged that their server isn’t in 1st place.

I’d be interested in hearing from other people. Is the score really that important to them? Does the score encourage or discourage you from participating in W3 regardless of what position your server is. Or on the other hand, do you ignore the score completely and play because you enjoy W3.

I wouldn’t be too hasty in calling this new skill worthless. I was surprised last night at how effective a few points in build mastery is.

A few of us in my guild had invested some points into this new mastery. Our guild likes to move fast when taking objectives. Now when our commander says “flash build this”, it’s up in a second.

I suspect that when people see the potential for this skill there will be a demand to tone it down.

And I agree that this encourages even more siege placement especially in open field fighting, something the game doesn’t need.

Just my 2 coppers worth…..

Good fights in EB too! Although I must say, I’m honored SoS wanted to chase me down and kill me, but laughing is really rude especially since you guys never gave up and I got cornered. And custom emotes don’t work cross server, we see gestures btw.

It’s funny that 5 people will chase one person for 3 minutes especially when they are running away from the main battle to do so. All servers have people that are guilty of this.

I’m sure their team mates are proud of them for abandoning them for 1 cheap kill.

If this was a one time glitch that some people took advantage of either knowingly or unwittingly, then I would be VERY surprised if anyone is even warned. I’m sure a bug report was sent to ANET so they can correct it.

If this was caused by a known exploit, then of course that would be different.

ANET not only looks at people who are reported but also at the people that do the reporting. Actions can be taken against a reporter if they deem it’s a frivolous complaint. Something to keep in mind.

The event happened. Apologizes offered. Time to move on.

I got an enemy invite this past weekend after my group had Golem rushed his tower. I accepted the invite before I realized who it was. He only stayed grouped long enough to deliver a tear soaked message then left before I could reply. A very brave soul indeed.

I didn’t even know this was possible, and is a pretty dumb “feature” IMO. This may have a place among honorable parties that wish to duel, but it is also another mechanic for griefing and crying. We should at least have a option to ignore enemy party requests. This is also a great way for spies to communicate information, which is still an issue.

I’d like to see an official response from ANET if this is “working as intended”, but I won’t hold my breath.

Estus.1726

What class are you playing? Unless you are entering into a fight spamming an AOE skill, you won’t get a lot of loot bags coming your way.

On getting Badges…
As a Warrior I enter a battle with my Long Bow using the AOE skills. I then switch to a Sword to mop up. One large battle can net me 6 badges easily. The key is, open field engagements against a large group on enemies will give you more badges than riding the Karma Train and taking one keep after another that has few defenders. The greater the risk, the greater the rewards.

On getting wiped out….
Joining a PUG group that randomly gathered on a commander can be a gamble. Your best bet is to find out what guilds are serious about WvWvW and join the one that fits your personality. A solid guild that trains for WvWvW and communicates with TS or Mumble can decimate an enemy PUG group twice their size. I’ve personally seen it over and over again.

If you were on my server, I’d hook you up :-)

If I understand your post correctly, you would be willing to pay a monthly sub in order for ANET to have the cash to work on improving the game. Is that near what your point is?

Please be aware that games that are FTP and have a cash store are VERY profitable. Why do you think games like DDO and LOTRO dropped their monthly subs and started using a cash store?

Pandora’s box has been opened in the gaming world. The time for MMORPGs charging a monthly fee (other than WOW) are over. New online games may charge for a short time to help recoup costs of development, but they will eventually go FTP and open a cash shop too.

Don’t worry my friend, ANET is not hurting for gold and coppers by not charging us $15 a month.

Single massive zergs is the game

Estus.1726

IMO, SPvP is for the competitive side of PvP. WvWvW was designed for casual players to go and get a taste for PvP. I believe that W3 is working exactly the way that ANET designed it.

The maps encourage massive armies (Zergs if you like) fighting over contested areas. The size of the Zerg is in direct portion to the number of casuals playing.

Your fear that it will never change is probably valid. If this is a bad thing for the health of the game however remains to be seen.

in WvW

Zerg is just another name for casual WvWvW. Typically you will not see organized W3 Guilds seeking out and running exclusively with the Zerg.

The best way to eliminate the Zerg (IMHO) is to discourage the casual player from joining in W3. This is something ANET will never do, nor something I would want pr propose. Sometimes I just like to jump on the Karma train for an hour or so for some mindless fun.

My opinion is, ANET does not consider W3 as a “serious contest”. Real competition takes place in SPvP. They want HUGE epic battles in WvWvW.

WXP account wide idea

in WvW

Posted by: Estus.1726

Estus.1726

I like the idea, but with a twist. Let there be a "WxP Bank much like Laurels are.

Here are 3 possible scenarios.

Player 1:
Only plays one character exclusively. Over time he accumulates 1000 WxP points. He spends them all on his one Character.

Player 2:
Loves his ALTs. Over time and across his 5 ALts he also accumulates 1000 WxP. He decides to use them all on one ALT instead of dividing them up across all 5.

Player 3:
Also loves his ALTs. He divides his 1000 WxP across all 5.

If this was implemented, all current WxP points would need to be refunded into the “WxP bank”. This plan doesn’t penalize anyone’s play style but offers everyone options.

I’d also like to see an option to reset WxP points for 1G maybe? :-)

Here is what I’m reading in this thread:

My group of leet hyper skilled players cannot compete against a zerg of lesser skilled players. Therefore, ANet must tilt the game towards our type of playstyle because….

Well, this is where you guys are losing it. Cause I’ve yet to read single decent reason for tuning the game to small group play over large group play. More people zerg than play small groups.

The zerg is tkittenense of wvw. Zergs can carry more suppy for siege…can drain supply camps to deny the enemy and speed build siege on the spot for the conquest of keeps & towers.

Not to say that there isn’t a place for small group play…but not at the expense of other forms of play.

I agree. it boggles my mind that people in this thread actually wants to discourage large scale group battles in a MMORPG. What do people want? If more than 20 people are in a certain radius of each other they randomly start to drop dead?

SPVP seems to be what ANET had in mind for small groups. WvWvW IMO was designed for three massive armies to go toe to toe with each other.

It’s pretty easy by looking at the map to figure out where all the action is even without that blue square.

Why do you think the ANET is concerned about large groups of people massing together to interact? Perhaps this (as I believe is the case) is exactly what they had envisioned when designing WvWvW.

I’d suggest that instead of ANET spending time and resources to stop people from grouping up in a MMORPG that they fix any performance issues that occur when 200 players collide.

Have coin and badges automatically go to your inventory. All the other items that drop is vendor trash anyways. If people want the items in the bags for salvage, they can spam F and get them.

That’s a horrible plan. 75% of the coinage you make in WvW is from vendoring that “vendor trash.” People want their loot. Not part of their loot.

Right now, people get “part” of their loot, and that’s what everyone is upset about.

How about that vendor trash stops dropping altogether then? Will that make your frown turn upside down?

Seriously though, just make the vendor trash be an equivalent coinage amount and have it go directly into your inventory.

It might be more effective if anet creates NPCs that would operate items like arrow carts and other siege in a keep and call out incomings. It would be like hiring guards would create “siege engineers” and “lookouts” to operate siege and call incoming.

I like your idea.

If course players would always be able to take control of siege from the NPCs.

I’ve often wondered why all those nifty Guards you have at your towers idly stand next yo unmanned siege equipment when it’s attacked and no one is around. Make Tower and Keep upgrade that trains Guards to operate siege equipment. That would encourage at least people to build siege equipment after that take a Tower at least.

Stop with the zerg hate! A lot of us actually play WvW to fight in large scale combat. It is simple:

If you want to fight NPCs, do dungeons or PvE
If you want small scale PvP, do sPvP or tPvP
If you want large scale fights, do WvW.

There is something for everyone already.

I agree.

It’s really all about preference and choice. It’s my opinion that the Devs have setup WvWvW to behave exactly like it is. They want HUGE epic fights to happen. And that’s exactly what I personally love about WvWvW now. 15 minute fights for SMC are not uncommon on my server. This only happens when 2 or three large armies clash. I’ll state it again, I love this kind of action.

I’ve been in quite a few MMORPGs over the years. There always seems to be a small group of players that feel the DEVs should change the game to suit their play style.

Insult me, call me names, and rage all you will. The game mechanics are IMO the way the game designers had envisioned and will change very little in the future.

I assume the amount of damage is not scaled down depending on the range. If not, it would make sense that a hit a max range would not be as devastating as being hit at point blank range.

Why are Zergs more Effective?

I’ve witnessed some impressive tactics by commanders on all sides during some of these massive “zerg” battles. Depending on the commander leading the massive army, I’ve seen some clever things lately.

To say that is is no skill involved other than who brings more to the fight is wrong IMO. If that were true then two evenly matched Zergs going toe to toe would always end in a stalemate. This has not been what I’ve seen. Usually one side will prevail usually due to superior tactics.

So…. I have to play hours of WvWvW to get a handful of Badges and then hours of PvE to get Laurels? … Check. I think I’ll choose the option to do without thanks. Ask Mythic how things worked out for them when they forced PvE on the people who only enjoyed RvRvR. (Hint ToA).

There is no doubt ET will slide down to the lower tiers. Server transfers and major guild abandonment will hurt any server. We had our day in the sun, no regrets.

To the OP, just be careful what you wish for, you may just get it. Good luck next week, you will certainly need it.

I didn’t realize that Anet has released another game, ForumWars!

A game where people that ought to be in WvW can come and trade verbal barbs with each other.

Free server transfers are not the problem

I sincerely doubt that avid WvW players transfer to another server for the PvE.

Since this forum deals with WvW, the statement that free transfers are hurting WvW is probably valid and has nothing to do with the PvE crowd.

Did you transfer to JQ?

This…

Queues are only a problem on the unfortunate servers that are moving up and induated by the server jumpers looking for a good time. The OP has stated his EU server has been rising in standings, thus the problem.

I doubt that Anet considers this a problem, it’s more of a tool to force redistribution of the population.

Reading the forums has become more entertaining than WvW. The latest pix that looked like Mars pretty much says it all.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised to find this thread buried on page 3 of the forums. This drama and action for T1 this week has mainly occurred on the forums, but even that is dimishing.
