I once defended ANets design of the Ranger over a year ago, I still love the high mobility of the class.

I took a break for said year, and have come back to a LOT of changes. You say we got nerfed with no compensation, but I see that we did get a few buffs:

Axe off-hand got severely buffed. Path of scars is now probably my favorite weapon skill on the ranger, for its burst and CC potential. I made a thread for an S/A+A/Warhorn build awhile ago too and that is now very viable (in PvE at least).

We got STEALTH. I remember reading threads begging for more camouflage and stealth like thieves and laughing that it would never happen. Then I come back and see that we got it and yet we STILL aren’t satisfied. Moving vulnerability to Rapid fire is also great at increasing unexpected sniper burst. A style that STILL exists with all of our % damage increase traits…. which we probably have the most of for any class. (5% longbow damage, 10% flanking, 10% endurance full, add in scholar runes and have a field day.)

The new Maul is beautiful. I don’t think it used to hit like a truck (I didn’t read a year’s worth of patch notes, I just played again and went with what I saw), but it definitely feels like it and with 4.5 sec cooldown with traits it is amazing dps for a TANK weapon. Vulnerability is much more desired with the gear you use with greatsword (PVT stats, no Condition damage usually) than bleed was.

BUT

I understand why the Ranger community is still upset. The pet damage nerfs did hit us at the wrong place. I imagine it was due to sPvP and burst builds being unfun, but it was a kitten hard burst to pull off… and I thought PvP would be balanced separate from PvE.

A nerf you didn’t mention that I was particularly upset with was the Endurance regen trait nerf by 50%. That’s a huge nerf (why not 75% to start?) and pretty unjustified. I don’t know how hard they hit other bunker classes (but from playing PvP cursorly it seems necros and guards are still gods), but was bunker ranger really even powerful enough to nerf?

Like I said I was fine with the direction I believed ANet had for this class. The mobility in fights was my favorite part of the ranger. I was fine with our ranged weapon inferiority. I just felt like a brawler with all the free evades and endurance regen….. then they go and nerf that aspect.

I’m missing some changes I’m sure but I’ve run out of time/desire to make a lengthy post that is mostly to the choir…

Looking at it reminded me of another nerf: The quickness on pet swap. Now I do see that in retrospect that was very strong, but in conjunction with the pet nerfs no one is going that deep into Beastmastery (I tried it, didn’t work out even kind of.)

The SB range nerf… well, I understand it. Its one of the nerfs I can say “yeah I get it… short bow should not have 1200 range.” I could whine and say they could buff long bow range by default to 1500 and change the trait (since its impossible to take that trait AND piercing arrows AND beastmaster signet anyway), but I’ll just pick my battles.

Nah kitten it, if you’re going to nerf short bow range give us back our machine gun attack speed with the kitten thing at LEAST because that was very enjoyable. Especially now that we don’t have more abusable quickness

Wow I can’t believe what I just read.

I didn’t think I would get upset about this issue AGAIN, but the way the mesmer class has been treated compared to our class is just so night and day I got fired up again.

I made a thread awhile back asking for clarification, a statement, a CLEAR answer from ANet on the state of QZ+SB 1 speed, as many rangers noticed an extreme delay (much more than 7% advertised) in the synergy of these two.

That thread stayed on page 1 for several days but recieved no response.

“Whatever, ANet’s ‘community relation’ team sucks/understaffed/overworked”

But then I wake up to see THIS:

Yet Mesmers notice a delay and its IMMEDIATELY investigated with IMMEDIATE responses and NUMBERS and CLARITY about delay and even FIXED.

This definitely should be one of the signets they are looking at, the 50% increased damage for pets is great for burst but there’s barely a reason to justify the passive (although it does help jump puzzles quite a bit).

Dahkeus you’re a bit offtopic, Centaur runes require heavy investment (a whole rune set just so I can get around?), and GS isn’t something all Rangers should have to carry around to feel mobile.

Rather play my ranger than my mesmer, and yes im shortbow.

I can live with a 7% nerf, I can BARELY live with the craptastic way they handled the nerf and telling us about it.

Can you sit there and honestly say the new SB+QZ is only SEVEN PERCENT slower than the new SB+QZ? People did testing in the mega thread, IIRC its about 15% slower or more than the old

I haven’t seen any math or proof in this thread that’s satisfied the question of whether Spirits of an Internal CD or not.

The fact that a lot of tooltips are wrong is a good point in favor of the opposition to the internal CD, but I think there must be an CD for balance purposes (Rapid Fire+Procs, quickness sword attacks, etc.) or stacks would be quite high.

There’s no way this is working as intended. I spent a good 5-6 hours in the Fractals last night, which oh by the way are bugged if someone d/cs or is kicked they CAN"T get back in but I’m sure there are threads for that:

It really hurts guilds like mine which are small and influence starved in the first place, who can only get on 5 like this for really big events that we all make time for.

When you TREAT us like trash ANet, the perception OBVIOUSLY will become that you hate the ranger class and its horrible. And it doesn’t matter how many small buffs and fixes you peacemeal out, it will never change until you change how you TREAT AND TALK to us.

Your cookie cutter promises aren’t going to work on us anymore. “We’re workin on rangers we swear” “we know rangers have issues/bugs be patient.”

Some of us, myself included, understand. I consider myself a patient person, I know updates don’t happen overnight and I’ll wait for as long as it takes for you to do the changes you want to ranger.

But as said before I WON’T stand here while you completely IGNORE this issue by skirting around it, and not even COMMENTING on it.

I read the post referred to by Solid Gold. Are we supposed to take THAT as your feedback? Is SB still “perfectly” fine? If that’s how you feel can you not look us in the eyes, in our own forums, and say as much? Can you not SAY “We’ve looked into SB+QZ, its working fine, there are no plans to change it at this time.”

I mean seriously, there’s a REASON you’re avoiding this like the plague. If its as petty as “well we want to keep the nerfs, but if we say as much the ranger community outbreak will be far too much to handle, so let’s ignore it” then ANet’s Community team has lost any last shred of respect I have left.

I’m not here to discuss the ranger changes. I’ll take every single one of them and be patient with the promises.

but what I WON’T take is the dodgy, “sweep it under the rug and they’ll forgot” nature that ANET has taken with our Short Bow.

ANet do you have any shred of sympathy? You straight up LIED AND HID A NERF IN A ANIMATION FIX. No we have not forgotten. You need to REBUILD our trust and the FIRST step is communication.

The nerf itself has been debatable but as a WHOLE the ranger community has agreed that the QZ+SB is not working properly. It feels like I’m shooting with a lead arm when I should be “actioning twice as fast”

Tell us, because you have not commented ONCE on this issue even given multiple threads and outlets where the topic was brought up:

IS SHORTBOW 1 WORKING PROPERLY WITH QZ ACCORDING TO YOUR TESTS AND DO YOU PLAN ON DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT 3 PATCHES LATER?

I don’t know about other rangers, I’m sure some have sucked it up and dealt with their new SB (or don’t even use QZ anymore), but I can’t bring myself to use it.

A 7% decrease shouldn’t make us feel this bad about SB, it should make us go “yeah I guess its slower now, but I still like it.”

INSTEAD I cringe every time I try to use it as our form of burst in a duel or pvp. I have just stopped using it all together.

We’re not asking for much, just TRANSPARENCY on this issue where there have been none.

I thought Empathetic Bond already removes all conditions?

Me and a few other guys were testing it a few weeks ago and it was confirmed as a condition dump. Was it nerfed?

I’ve heard and experienced that its a full dump every 10 seconds or so, what we’re debating here is that its not a reliable way to remove immobilize when we NEED to, to get out of combos. Any competent burst spec will use immobilize to set up their spec

I would like to see an improved range for Signet of Renewal, tbh I would like it to read like this:

“SoR: Your pet periodically takes condition from you.

Active: Cleanses ALL conditions from you and your pet"

Could just rework Empathatic Bond completely then. TBH I’d love to be able to take the Bark skin in PvP and not feel forced to have Empathatic Bond.

Why do I have this horrible feeling that this patch will be very underwhelming …

I have the same feeling. Given the horrible and dodgy nature of ANet about the SB Nerf and corresponding QZ bug, I do not feel like they will even acknowledge this issue they have created.

Usually you’ll see ANet respond pretty well with “we know this is a bug, we’re working on it.”

We even had a 20 page thread about the SB nerf, a perfect place for them to say “the speed of SB with QZ isn’t workin, and we WILL be fixing that”

But we had a patch since then with no ranger changes at all, and not once in that thread did they acknowledge the bug only stated that their animation change was indeed a flat nerf and L2P your burst isn’t fun.

I mean, I’m excited for Spirits/Signets, but there are so many little things our class could use that I don’t think would take long to address or test…

I hope it is not too late to offer this suggestion to be in the 11/15 patch. However skeptical I am that ANet truly reads these forums and listens to our concerns, I wanted to make a thread to show the huge support for a change like this to help us with what I consider one of our MAIN issues in PvP (its not lack of damage for the record outside the SB QZ bug):

Lack of ways to deal with Immobilize

Warriors have a trait that really should belong to us given our mobile style, which is: movement abilities break immobilize.

Currently Rangers are HARD countered by Immobilize. Empathatic Bond does not remove it reliably enough, Healing Spring removes the last condition applied, and SoR requires your pet to be near you and immobilizes your pet which sucks up your dps output.

I thought the design philosophy of ANet was to give every class plenty of versalitility and ways to counter all specs. There is currently NO way I can build my ranger that will NOT be countered by Immobilize.

This is because Rangers are a highly mobile class and Immobilize COMPLETELY removes the ability to dodge and leaves us as sitting duck medium armor classes:

Thieves can stealth to avoid disengage while immobilize and can also remove it frequently with multiple abilities.

Engineers have a removal for it with their Rifle and are flat out IMMUNE to conditions under 25% hp when specc’d.

Won’t go into all the other classes, but every other class I’ve played has had no problems speccing for Cond/Immobilize removal if they want.

Rangers options for that are currently too limited-

Suggestion

During the Beta, Evasive Purity was nerfed from removing all conditions on dodge (IIRC) to only Blind and Poison.

I think you will find with responses in this thread that the Ranger community DESPERATELY want the Nature Magic tree to be reworked. But DONT overlook this trait in your attempts to fix only Spirits. Evasive Purity should be brought up to par with other “Grandmaster” traits.

Blind and poison? I can’t afford to save my dodge rolls just to remove those, I have so much other burst skills to watch for.

I would GLADLY trade Blind for Immobilize removed on dodge. I would LOVE to see Lightning Reflexes remove Immobilize.

So please other Rangers, post your support for this change so its not overlooked amongst the Signet/Spirit/SB Fixes and reworks.

ANet you have stated that THIEVES should be the most “slippery” classes and hard to catch. Am I far off the mark when I say the way you have designed Rangers is that we should be the most hard to “Pin down” of all classes? Why then does a SINGLE condition destroy all of our specs (save maybe Protect me/SoS full bunker…) by making us completely vulnerable?

First lets look at what youre asking for:

You want to be able to burst down most classes from 1200+ Ranged the way a thief does?

That’s not what our class can do. If you want to sit there and unleash your dps on focus fikittenget in a 2v2 or 3v3, its incredibly useful to have 1200 range away from their team and be able to output damage.

Now for your rotation: it has a lot of build up it seems. Jungle stalker’s F2 alone takes 3s iirc. Using Jungle stalker for a <100 power for your burst is pretty suboptimal when you could have a lynx or jaguar on their face for 5k+ damage with QZ.

Also for pure burst, Raven/Owl F2 is considerable more damage than Eagle/Hawk (just less often, but it comes with blind.chill), so there’s that.

Also are you running full Berserker’s gear?
Also why Sharpening stone? You are really underestimating our pets damage I think, by using one pet to barely up your dps and a whole utility slot for a few bleed stacks that you don’t put too much use (if going for full burst gear).

Add Sick’em over sharpening stone, and now what do you have.

Hell, using Signet of the Hunt before Raven F2 is a huge increase in dps over Sharp stone.

So, try:

Hunter’s Shot (this+Opening strikes=15% increased damage. +10% Flanking=25%), PB shot into QZ Rapid Fire. All while Jaguar goes to town on them in stealth for crits.

Swap to SB after that concussion shot, Swap to Raven now 2 quickness seconds for Raven burst and crossfire.

Not saying you can 100% non glass cannon specs with this, but you should find it a lot better than your current setup for burst

Another way to get ridiculous stacks of might is to go 15 into Nature Magic, where your boons are applied to your pet as well.

Then get a Sigil of Strength, which has a 30% chance on crit to give you might (and thus your pet) for 10s with NO cooldown. Also use the trait in Beastmastery where pets get 3 stacks of might on swap.

With quickness on pet swap on sword MH the stacks get up pretty quickly

25 stacks of might Raven/Owl F2 is an easy 8k-10k burst.

They nerfed the healing on Carniverous apetite by 80% I believe back after one of the betas, used to be an amazing trait…now its hard to justify making room for it with the other options in Skirmishing.

Heals about 200-300 a crit now iirc

I think a large portion of ignorance in this thread is due to people not looking at the problem in the right way.

They are thinking:
“dis gam ebout 1v1. 1v1 eles STILL get stomped wdf”
or
“just cap the node THEN go finish the ele if you haz problem”

I am thinking:
“Eles can reposition themselves which is huge, and can be rezzed safely or force the team that just KILLED the Ele (aka PUNISHING the people who got the kill by forcing the out of position to secure it, with extra dps needed to down from range than Thief because of hp reset). This is not a balanced mechanic, and its changes like this that are pushing GW2 PvP in wrong direction (the right direction being the “no downed state” movement, but thats another thread)."

Yeah I oversimplified the people who are looking at this the wrong way, but I haven’t really seen many compelling arguments as to how the Ele’s new state isn’t far and above other classes.

I don’t think it will be an e-sport due to lack of “spikes” in excitement.

The way classes are designed, there are SO many “oh kitten” buttons that mitigate all forms of burst, there is the downed state, etc.

I can’t imagine a commentator or spectator ever on the “edge” of their seats like in LoL or what not. I mean PLAYING it is very intense yes, but I don’t think watching it would prove exciting at all…

You can have two people finish a warrior OR use stability, and the warriors CAN NOT VENGEANCE and WILL be finished 100% of the time.

Considering all other things that need to be fixed in mind for Ele, unless they also get balanced, how about no…

This is part of the “laziness” that disgusts me.

Eles class are “broken” and “unbalanced” (a whole nother thread for this, but I don’t buy this for a second with the Eles I’ve seened), so lets just give them an OP downed state to “balance” it out.

But on the other hand, Rangers most viable burst spec was nerfed (SB) and broken, so lets nerf that to “balance” their OP spec while leaving the rest of their kit below par and some parts unusable.

Where is the fairness in this approach ANet?

Thieves and mesmers HP do NOT reset when they use their 2. You can just kill them with damage and they can do **** all about it.

Eles hp RESET every time they use mist form, and are invulnerable while they use it, and can go anywhere unlike thieves whose teleport is one plane and can be blocked by LoS

Before I’m shot down by the inevitable people that don’t read this post fully and say: “WTF ELES ARE SO WEAK RIGHT NOW AND THEIR DOWNED STATE WAS A JOKE” let me say this:

The previous Ele downed state was too weak. I concede this.

HOWEVER

As it was currently, and lazily (a disgusting pattern I’m finding from ANet as way to approach many issues in their game) changed to it TOO STRONG.

Let’s ignore how hard it is with a current Ele bunker spec to get downed in the first place with 2-3 people on you and plenty of stability:

Mist form has NO COUNTER PLAY This is the biggest flaw. There is NOTHING you can do to finish an Ele properly without devoting too many resources or overextending off the point to finish them.

When you come out of mist form, YOUR DOWNED HEALTH RESETS this means you CANNOT counterplay an Ele to mist form by dpsing their downed state, because their health will reset and your efforts will be for nothing. You HAVE to waste a finishing animation on a competent Ele before they mist form, or they will just sit their happily doing damage while you can do literally NOTHING to stop them.

Also mobility. Mist form is unarguably the strongest mobile downed state in the game. The repositioning potential on Mist form is UNLIMITED. You can go off a cliff, behind a wall, all things that FORCE people to overextend to finish you, or your guaranteed to get back up.

Let’s go over other classes and counterplay to their downed state:
Warrior, Ranger, Guardian, Necromancer, Engineer- Stability counters these and you can finish them without pause.

Warrior, Engineer, Necromancer-Having two people finish them, stability not required.

Thief- Teleport with the thief (guardian, thief, mesmer, ele) while finishing them. OR just sneeze at them with aoe and force them to teleport, then sneeze again and they die.

Mesmer- AoE, knowing how the mesmer downed clones appear and it what order.

There is counterplay to every single other class, why is Ele an exception? What kind of design is this to have ONE class far superior than all the others?

NO I’m not asking for a revert. I’m asking for a change.

My proposal, but ANet is far more creative:

REMOVE MIST FORM OFF DOWNED STATE. Period. It was fine when it was on 3, but that makes them a free stomp. So remove it completely, or put it back on 3.

REPLACE Mist form with an interrupt.

-2. Cone of Lightning. Elementalist delivers a shock in a cone in front of the direction his camera is facing, this dazes all hit for 1 second.

This would be an interrupt on PAR with all the other classes, and COUNTERABLE with stability.

All other classes’ downed state can be countered, how is this acceptable that Eles cannot?

The flaming book, what gems/upgrades go inside it? So far Rare gems/Crests are not able to be placed in it.

The KD on both axe weapons is definitely too much. The 2s stun on Greatsword is also a lot, 1.5 would still be pushing it.

A lot of the numbers are baseless like deepwinter said, and they might scare off devs from seeing any legitimate changes in this thread. Also Natural stride and getting it on weapon swap.. you do realize that’s like 80% uptime of 50% complete mitigation? That’d be absurd…

I’d really like to see, if I could only choose a handful of changes (besides the signet ones that were all but stated would be improved) of those to be made:

1. LR removes immobilize
2. Swap the traps to the WS tree, swap the Sword/Offhand stuff to Skirmishing
3. Increase Protect Me range (had a hard time choosing the third one >_>)

So, since I’m so “clever” I was thinking of crafting a Sigil of the Night to put on my AC greatsword, that way I would know when the 10% increase to damage is active (when it glows).

However in Dungeons the glow is always there, so is it always considered night time in dungeons for the purpose of this sigil?

Last time I read a thread about it, it was tested so that you gained a Moment of Clarity when YOU were interrupted. Trait really needs to be clarified/reworked, I agree its pretty lackluster for a Grandmaster.

I don’t have a Guru account so I’ll ask you here about your build Leviatana, since I too am working on my GS build (at least until the new fixes) because the WvW Coat and Greatswords are too kitten sexy NOT to make work:

1. Why 25 points in NM? How do you justify this over at LEAST 10 points in Skirmishing for the 30% extra crit damage from pet trait? Also the fury on weapon swap really helps imo. Compared to.. 10% less damage from your Greatsword? 30% pet crits (not to mention the crit damage and precision from the tree itself) will go a lot longer on both your weapons than 5%+5% with boons.

2. Why Double bears? You say its to have an extra version of “you” but I don’t really see that being viable. You already ARE you, tanky as hell, so why not have your pet hit like a truck to compensate (see #1)? And with the 16 second swap CD I haven’t had any problems keeping my pet alive in MOST encounters, sometimes I have Black bear on my set.

3. Why Spike Trap? If this is for dungeons, don’t you find a Combo field more beneficial to your group? (Ice doesn’t require cond damage, Fire is always nice), and if its PvP, Ice slows more than Spike and you could be using Muddy Terrain since you have the 20% Survival CDR.

Hopefully these questions become obsolete when they fix spirits/NM tree next week. If they do it right I’m looking forward to a 0-0-30-25-15 build like this, but right now I just can’t seem to justify it.

To whoever said I won’t post my build because, I don’t know because they think I’m talking out my kitten or something, I’ve mentioned my set-ups several times in this thread.

Currently running, for tPvP, Sword/Axe, Axe/Warhorn and 0-25-30-0-15 set-up with 4 Ogre Runes, 2 Divinity Runes, and Berserker Amulet with Valkyrie jewel. Utilities are Healing Spring, SoRenewal, Ice Trap/LR (depending on enemy team), QZ, Entangle/Spirit of Nature

Traits: Skirmishing-30% Pet Crit damage, Either Ranged Traps/Honed Axes/Carniverous Apetite for the second line.
WS-20% Reduced Survival CD/Vigorous Renewal, Off-hand Mastery, Empathatic Bond

I specifically tested the condition renewal on HS last night and it DOES give Vigor on each tick of regen and it DOES remove a condition at the same time. Tested without any allies near, cripple applied to myself, got vigor the SAME time cripple was removed

This gives me that huge single target burst with Sword I mentioned in my last post. Also I forgot to mention in that burst you also have WARHORN 4 and RAMPAGE AS ONE before you do the 6 seconds of quickness. Show me some numbers on THAT burst. Well over 15k potential. The build also has some AoE ice trap+Chilling bolts/Reflect with Axe offhand. And Decent AoE dps with Axe mainhand (those bounces hurt with my crit damage set-up.)

For tankiness I can disengage with Sword 2+LR+Dodge rolls pretty effectively. I’m much sturdier than my Thief in team fights (it helps that no one “respects” rangers dps and makes us low priority.)

For whoever said “if you think dodge rolls can survive CONDITIONS+CC+FOCUS FIRE you are out of your mind.”

hmm? You’re right. If I got focused like that ina team setting and wasn’t able to cleanse immobilize and disengage, I would definitely die with this set-up. That’s because my bursty ranger build, or most CLASSES burst builds, are countered by heavy conditions CC and focus fire… what class isn’t in their burst spec?

Now if I WANTED to be able to survive that sort of burst. I’d take Great Sword, Sword/Dagger, throw in Ice Trap with SoS/Protect me, and go to TOWN while people focused me for 20 seconds to take down while the rest of my group was free. If you build tanky we have the tools, if you want to be burst we have the tools, if you want to click two buttons and expect your burst to be equal to warriors/thieves we do NOT have that capacity (unless they stand still for your pets obv…)
