$50 for the expansion? I showed them...

Price of games has not kept up with the general rate of inflation, and also it is far more expensive to make AAA video games now than it was in the past, so you could argue that the rate of inflation for games is even greater than inflation in general.

Ok, I exaggerated when I said significantly inflated since they (the games) have pretty much stayed around 60$ over the past many (10ish?) years. But in a way, one thing I was also referring to, when I did say inflation, is the fact that in the past there was no types of micro transactions for games, be it as DLC or extra play time in the case of many “free-to-play” games (i.e. games like Candy Crush Saga).

Companies are basically subsidizing the cost of new games and then making their profits from selling DLC and expansions. Just the way the industry works. It’s also why you see so many “free-to-play” MMOs. They really aren’t free. You end up spending a boat load on DLC just to get basic functionality or to be competitive. You should think of them more like a free trial than an actual game.

On this point I agree, but it may not have sounded like that on my post. I apologize for the confusion.

I wasn’t really disagreeing with everything you were saying. Just pointing out that games are actually cheaper these days when you take inflation into account. DLC and microtransactions are where the real money is at. I mean, just think how easy it is for someone to spend $10 for, let’s say, a character slot. Some people complain but most pay. $50 for an expansion is cheap in comparison.

Yup, totally agreed. No wonder such scummy marketing tactics keep existing.

Not necessarily. The price of games have significantly inflated from what PC gaming was years ago. I believe when my dad bought me StarCraft it was only 40$. Now most baseline games cost 60$. Many expansions and DLC have varying costs depending on the amount of things they are adding. Most “true” expansions cost 40$-50$ with the prices shifting to the latter. DLC are far cheaper but its what I would compare to the Gem Store.

These marketing tactics may have been considered “scummy” in the past but with the all the the free gaming that exists now a days ranging from Candy Crush Saga to truly free MMOs these tactics have become the norm otherwise many of these companies couldn’t compete.

Additionally, I don’t find this as scummy. They told me what I was going to get, and I was satisfied with it, so I bought it. This is not like haggling on the streets of New York, or anywhere else in the world for that matter. This is like going to WalMart and buy a new TV that’s 1000$. If you don’t like it don’t buy it or wait for it to go on sale.

Edit: Added the last paragraph.

Really is this true even for games like GTA V, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age:Inquisition that sold more then 10 million copies?
Only GTA V did that but you get my point.

Games that sell more copies make more money and are more profitable. Most games do not sell 10 million copies, though. I think GW2 (which is a fairly successful MMO) has only sold like 5-6 million copies over 3 years. Not sure about exact numbers, but it’s not 10 million. That includes China, I believe.

GW2 also has been putting out free content over the last several years, and that cost the Anet money to make. Witcher 3 is a new game and will probably have some additional content added. I know GTA V has added some free updates, but it is still a young game and is one of those mega blockbusters that can make a lot of money by just selling the base game. Dragon Age has 3 DLCs already.

I think people don’t like it because it is new and they are used to the old trading post. I feel like it is better than the old but has a few issues that should be addressed. They are:

1. My sell order should not default to highest buyer. You should make the trading post automatically pick the price that a rational buyer/seller would pick

2. I should see my net profits and not have to use a calculator

3. My transactions screen should default to what I am selling or give me the option to set the default

4. Give me a button to sell max stack size so I don’t have to use the slider

5. why is the search string size limited?

6. why are my search results limited?

Math < reality… maybe

The more complex the reality, the more difficult it is to reduce it to math. We humans just imagine because we have had some success with the math and the science, we can easily reduce everything to numbers. Actually, real science is about observation of reality, not just numbers. If the reality doesn’t fit the numbers, then the numbers aren’t reality.

Problem with the social sciences (and marketing research falls under that category) is that you are dealing with very complex systems that are not easy to quantify. Maybe one day we will have Ultimate Science that describes reality in perfect detail and allows us to predict anything. Maybe. I’ll believe it when it happens.

ANet, the reason you have no player retention

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fenar.4025

What does a theme park, sandbox, and sporting arena all have in common? They are all social experiences. They are also the common metaphors used to describe mmos. This is not an accident. To make a successful mmo, you need to make it an engaging social experience first, and in order to do this you need regulars.

So why, I ask, is Anet going out of their way to alienate their regulars? If they really wanted to make the game more friendly to newcomers they could have just expanded their tutorial instance and made it optional for veteran players. I suspect the real reason they made these changes was to make the western and eastern clients easier to maintain at the same time. I think they are shooting themselves in the foot. Please return to making this game appealing to your loyal customers, not a bunch of randoms who will come in and play the game for a few weeks or months and then leave.

[Edit]

Oh, and I also suspect it is the long term players who also spend the most in the gem store.

It’s not just about making more sense. It’s about the feeling of progression you never really got before. A new person coming to this game from another MMO didn’t have a lot of bling in the leveling process.

So you know, your stats would go up every time you leveled, but nothing told you that happened. You used to be able to level without ever noticing. You can’t do that now. It always gives you something. There’s always something unlocking.

I’m guessing for a new player, it might be a bit more involving if nothing else.

And the speed to level to 15 has been dramatically increased, which doesn’t hurt me.

No point Vayne. Look at all the posts in this topic. 80% of the people here complain because they like to complain. People would focus on speed leveling through the game and then complain their is nothing to do. This game imo is the fastest game to level in but they are all “hardcore” gamers so they will attack anything that isn’t WoW (gear treadmill) or a game that forces you to have 5 skill bars open because THATS HARDCORE!!! YEAH!!!! HARDCORE!!!!! ( Hey I can be sarcastic too! Awesome! I never knew! )

Everyone is complaining on the their decision, presentation, planning, and thought process. Not the direction, You’d be in heavy denial if you think this is a great execution.

TP was fixed. Rangers fixed. You know whats annoying? When someone reads a build on a forum and comes here and gets owned because they don’t know HOW to run the build. The changes to leveling imo will help people with that problem. Just because you go to a forum and pick a build doesn’t mean you know how to use it correctly or when would be best times to us skills. Not everyone is born with the GREAT INTELLIGENCE that all the Q.Q here were born with. Honestly I’m sure a good portion of these people have bad W/L ratio in PvP because they don’t know how to run their build. LVL 100 with 30%/70% W/L ratios. And you level here then go to ANY OTHER MMO and level there and see who gets to level 80 1st.

People running around with other people’s builds not knowing anything. This situation is a flaw by design. Accessibility is of course welcomed but I honestly don’t think people are as.. In need of help as you imply. Taking more time to get to lvl 80 is fine and perhaps preferred for people that enjoyed the progression aspect more. However without the meat that fills the husk just getting to 80 slower or quicker is meaningless and pointless.

Well idk I think the point for low level areas is to learn the game and I think this update does just that. Neither you or I can say how much help a new player needs because we obviously are not new players. Looking back at when I started playing GW2 I didn’t feel a sense of direction now with this new patch you have those guides.

And can you please explain what “meat that fills the husk” means because I honestly don’t understand you on that one.

Yeah, the dodge tutorial really helped me personally — took me a little while to master though. I also love the fact you can’t die in the tutorial and can just AFK. They should just remove the downed state and death from the game until you reach level 80.

Fenar.4025

And how do you suggest they paid all their 300+ employees during those years it takes to develop the expansion?

Well they’ve had over 2 years already. That’s enough time to develop two expansions, or one really big one. That’s how it worked with GW1. Right after Prophecies, they started working on Factions, and then Nightfall, and then Eye of the North.

Instead they chose to develop the Living Story, which has been of very mixed quality, and is a lot of content that is temporary. They could have used that time to expand the game with permanent content.

I doubt all the employees at Anet are working on living story because we just haven’t gotten that much content. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for all the free stuff we have gotten, but they’ve got to be working on something else.

Also, they probably spent some time and resources working on the Chinese release. That’s a lot of money for them, and probably more profitable than an expansion.

as they should be !

And they will be.

A person buying gems with real money, at current gold prices and scrap drop rate, will have to sell one skin for over 400 gold to match the price of selling the same amount of gems directly.

If starting prices for new weapons is over 400 gold, how do you think the majority of people now playing who are used to starting prices at 100 gold or less or going to react?

Answer: the market for BL weapon skins will collapse. You might see a few of the more popular weapons listed for exorbitant prices. Also, if a weapon costing 1 ticket goes for 400 gold, then a weapon costing 5 tickets would go for… 2,000 gold! At that point, you are better off making a legendary.

DO NOT change the dungeon owner system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fenar.4025

the dungeon community is the most hostile, most unfriendly, most eager to kick community in this game, and their is almost no fixing that. one of the only ways to be safe in a long run is to be the opener. this update will only give dungeon elitists more power to kick the person WHO STARTED THE PARTY. this update is just going to make them more hostile and aggressive and now theirs no protection from that.

its also a problem for dungeon sellers who can now be kicked by the buyer although i dont really like runners anyways.

i dont wana play the meta, i dont always wana roll swamp i dont wana keep a set of full zerker armor to do the catacombs and i dont wana rush past every enemy in the game just to quickly do the boss chest. and now their is no way for me to safely join a dungeon. you have taken away one of the only things i still do in this game anet.

SOLUTION
make it so the dungeon does persist if the owner goes offline and they can be kicked after being offline for a set amount of time (lets say 5-10 mins?) but the dungeon will NOT persist if they are kicked

If you don’t want to play the way everyone else does in a social game then you need to find your own group of friends who want to play your way. Sorry.

Hopefully they will just remove Black Lion Keys from the game entirely. It’s a horrible gambling system that is corrosive to the game they’ve made. Just sell Black Lion weapons on the TP for a fair price and don’t force people to gamble for them.

I’m surprised there haven’t been class action lawsuits against gaming companies for some of the RNG stuff they put in cash shops. Why? Because it is essentially gambling that somehow escapes from any local, state, or national laws that would normally regulate that sort of thing. Maybe they need to move their servers to Indian Lands or put them on boats in international waters or something.

Before you start going off on legal tangents, perhaps you should first understand laws and our legal system? You can’t file and win a lawsuit if what’s being done isn’t illegal. If you need further help, I can try to quote myself on a post I made on the subject of “lottery laws”.

furthermore, this type of gambling the DoJ (or whatever department handles gambling) doesn’t care because money is not changed both ways.

If Anet had some way to pay players based on the results of gambling on keys, then there would be a nissue.

You might be right. But I think it’s actually worse that players have to pay real money to gamble for the chance to get virtual items. At least with real world gambling you have a chance to make back your money or make a profit.

It’s something lawyers could argue about. There have been lots of business practices that were considered “legal” that ultimately ended up in court. In the insurance industry carriers will pay hidden bonuses to brokers for passing more business their way. This went on for years and years and years until major lawsuits were filed against carriers. The carriers lost.

Here is how I would revamp the current system and improve sales in the gem shop:

  1. Remove BL Keys and Chests from the game. Seriously.
  2. Sell BL Tickets directly in the gem store for some reasonable price.
  3. Add a chance for BL ticket scraps and tickets to drop in game
  4. Revamp pricing of all the boosters and other stuff you normally get from the chests. This stuff is not worthwhile to buy at current prices.

BL weapon skins are going to get a lot more expensive and you may find it hard to buy the less popular ones. If Anet wants to encourage players to actually buy keys instead of farming them, they need to do a major overhaul of BL Chest rewards. For instance, why exactly do I want Revive orbs, essences of luck, and other trash? Give us good stuff so we don’t feel like we are being cheated out of our money. Also, ticket scrap and ticket drop rates need to be improved to keep the cost of weapon skins reasonable.

Oh, and while I’m on the subject, why is it that they put all these nice new armor and weapon skins behind a pay wall? I miss the days of GW1 where you had to actually earn cool rewards by playing the game. I understand they need to make money, but they also need to make the game feel rewarding to actually play.

Active challenges in GW2 and in Wildstar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Fenar.4025

Fenar.4025

Firstly, I love Gw2 – A lot. I think it was a great and important leap for the MMO genre in a much needed direction.

However, for the last year or so, I seem to find little enjoyment in the game. I tried out Wildstar yesterday and shortly enough understood what I missed from Gw2:

Freaking Active Challenging content!
Whilst playing WS, I encountered several “Elite”-ish mobs which actually forced me to think on the fly and utilize my abilities and movement the best I could in order to not get roflstomped. I’m not much for WS, but I’ve missed this so much that it’s enough to draw me in.

I heard that WS would have actual difficulty in it, but I was always skeptical since the Dungeons in Gw2 where also considered to be difficult – But then people learned the tactics and it was a walk in the park. The challenge lies in remembering the tactics and just doing them.
The challenges feels different in WS. Surely they will become a lot easier later down the line, but even then I don’t think there will be a lack of good and really difficult content even whilst leveling.

Even though I haven’t played Wildstar’s End game (they insist on calling it “Elder”) I think Gw2 is the greater game. This is not supposed to be a praise to WS, it’s supposed to draw attention to what probably a lot of people miss in Gw2: Actual actively challenging content. I think there’s a huge chunk of people that miss this a lot, whether they know it or not (although I’m obviously biased).

Gw2 seem to often be referred to be a “very casual game”. Do you think that this is something that the game really, really needs?

(please keep on topic and be reasonable)

GW2 pve content was challenging to people before they figured it out. I think what they need to do is release some new content and add some new challenges.

Active challenges in GW2 and in Wildstar

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fenar.4025

It’s a pretty fundamental philosophical/design difference.

WildStar has been envisioned from the beginning as being a game that was trying to feature the kind of difficulty that existed in MMOs (even the leveling game) prior to WoW’s expansions. The concept was to create a game that was, from the very beginning of it, tailored to meet the needs and desires of the most hardcore, high-skill-cap players in the MMO community — a group which often feels like its needs are overlooked in MMOs these days. So, WildStar from soup to nuts is catering to the most intense, hardcore, high skill gamer — that’s it’s own niche. I think it will be successful in that niche, but there are many other players who play MMOs these days who are moderately skilled at best and are not hardcore — they will be punished by WildStar’s design, and will not find it rewarding --> and, that’s okay because they are not WildStar’s target audience. The most hardcore, skill-cap oriented players are what they are going for.

GW2 has a completely different philosophy behind it — the idea here was to appeal primarily to the casual gamer by eschewing (for the most part) endgame progression gear treadmills, locking substantial content up in parts of the game reserved for high skill-cap or high time-cap players, and so on. It’s a design that, from the get-go, was certainly destined to alienate the hardcore, high skill cap contingent of the MMO community, precisely because the entire design here is not something that revolves around their needs, but rather the more average, moderate skill, casual player who wants to play for a bit, have some fun, have easy seamless grouping, good QoL features and so on, and then log off, without feeling pressured to do anything in particular to keep up with everyone and mot be left behind the curve and become a social laughingstock in a video game.

So, as far as I can tell, you can’t really get two games that are more philosophically dissimilar than GW2 and WildStar. Almost 180 degrees different in philosophy and intended audience.

Gear progression does not equal hardcore. GW2 has WvW, spvp, open world pve and dungeon content for endgame. I think people have been ruined by Blizzard. If you’ve played games for as long as I have, you will understand that Blizzard has always made gear hunting simulations. Because WoW became The MMO for all others to beat, this Blizzard design philosphy became the gospel of how to make a “good” MMO. In fact, the Blizzard approach is horrible. I played WoW for maybe a month before quiting. So boring. I’ve played GW2 for about 2 years now. I’ve never played any online game for that long.

presale was huge for NA too. but with ANet’s content release speed, retaining that 500k is highly unlikely

You mean releasing stuff faster than more or less every other MMO in the world?

i don’t know what other mmo’s you have played but guild wars 2 has had no new permanent release since launch

Fractals, Southsun, a new world boss (two if you count Tequatal), a new dungeon path, new weapon and armor skins, and lots of new features and changes to the basic game.

[edit]

And of course changes to WvW maps and EotM

TP is what makes this game fun. I am so glad they didn’t do something horrible like Elder Scrolls Online.

Female characters look way better

Eh, only the norn males look uglier than the females to me (both in terms of physical models and armor). Just fix their shoulders/necks, ANet… it’s not supposed to be triangular.

I agree. Norn males look like Gorillas. It is not a good look.

They are getting ready to release GW2 in probably the largest market in the world. I am sure big stuff will be coming in time. Learn to be patient and life will be so much more enjoyable.

I love Guildwars 2, its an excellent game and I would play it everyday IF it had deathmatch PVP with hall of heros etc.

Thats all they need to change…. I dont think people will care if its balanced, people just want to play deathmatch mode similar to Guild wars the original.

GvG also would be cool. I think there are a bunch of things people would like to see added or fixed. I wish they would fix skill lag (although it does seem to be better).

Trinity is not good. It’s a bad system.
The problem with GW2 is not the lack of trinity. Is that we don’t have something better.

It’s just old. Trinity systems had too much success over the past 10 years to be a bad system.

I miss pulling every last stupid pug with through hardcore dungeons as a healer. It’s ludicrous that people here seem to believe this is the opposite of teamplay, but either way it was fun. You are right though, there are probably way funnier teamplay actitivies for a person like me but anet didn’t implement any of them.

Going back to trinity would be the cheap way out.

Yeah, you’re right. Most of the reason that the trinity system is (for me) a bad system is because it’s old. Do you remember when rpgs where about turns and random encounters? We had games with turns and random encounters for years and years too. The only game that survived from this trend to our days are the Pokémon series. And probably just because it’s Pokémon. It was a good system before, but because it was the only one that could be simple and tactical at the same time that we had. Most of the people in our days can’t stand rpg in turns (not strategy rpgs like FFT, but like FF4) because we got better systems.

GW2 had a better system in mind. It was good on paper, but in game is just shallow. Even with combo fields and such (mostly because they’re just a flavor thing, and not something strictly necessary). It’s simple enough to appeal people, but has no team tactical approach at all, because you only need to concern about yourself to be successful in the very most of the situations.

And I do believe that is possible to create a system without the holy trinity that is at the same time simple to understand but deep to work with. But well, not in GW2.

The perfect is the enemy of the good. GW2 combat system is not perfect, but it is good — at least I like it.

The mechanics are there to build the character you want.

The encounter mechanics, however, either just deem them unnecessary or make bringing certain things along a hindrance.

Pretty much. When dungeon runners can with full honesty claim that having any in the party run a defensive build ups the risk for everyone, you know something is badly messed up. Logic dictates that having someone in a defensive build should reduce risk, not increase it.

You can do dungeons with non-meta builds. Running defensive builds is probably more optimal if you don’t know the dungeon well or are in a pug with people who don’t know the dungeon well. When the game first came out people were running all kinds of defensive builds. I did most dungeons using an alturistic healing guardian and had no problems.

What is true is that full dps will get you through a dungeon quicker and therefore make you more money. Full dps is also more optimal for high level fractals because healing, toughness, and vitality are pretty much worthless. Not true for regular dungeons or lower level fractals.

Oh, and I’m pretty sure that every CRPG ever created since the early 1980s has had builds that are more optimal than others. Just the nature of the beast.

They probably feel that the cost of marketing a 2 year old game at conventions outweighs any benefit they would get. They still market, though:

1. Sales promotions
2. PR. You read articles about GW2 in the gaming press all the time
3. Word of mouth
4. Big marketing campaign in China
5. They will be announcing some big content soon. Believe it.

Precursors reaching 1000 Gold on TP!

That’s the thing, this end-game things are getting more expensive every day, yet, we are getting our gold from events nerfed, not to talk that events gold is not balanced, go do The Maw, Elemental and other world bosses to win some amazing 30 cooper per event!

If i understand correctly ANET wants more grind, it seems there is not enough already.

They’re nerfing gold to DROP the price of things.

You really don’t seem to get it. Want to know when the price for precursors started skyrocketing? It’s no coincidence that it happened at pretty much the exact same time that you started getting increased rewards.

It’s called inflation. More gold in the system means it costs more gold to get what you want. Want to reduce prices? Reduce the gold in the system.

Exactly. A lot of players get their money from champion bags – which are notorious for containing several silver each. They are changing this, so they give less gold. As compensation, they are being affected by Magic Find.

So this means that there is less gold and more things like T6/Exotics/Rares. It’s probably too late to cause a major effect, but it’ll stop prices skyrocketing again – at least until they announce something major again.

Even worse is the type of player that is most likely to get maximum rewards from champion bags by farming them 24/7. Boring you say? Not if you are completely roBOTic about it.

I bet prices after the Feature Pack will....

Skins will go up in price for two reasons

1. People will be rushing to fill out their wardrobes
2. People will be salvaging exotics instead of posting on the TP because they will get the skin for free and also a chance at ecto and sigil/rune. This means fewer of those exotics will be on the TP, driving up prices.

A very good experience!

Stacking isn’t the problem. The problem is that some people expect scripted A.I. to be as challenging and exciting as fighting another human being of equal or greater skill. At first it is. Then you figure out fight mechanics and it devolves into whatever is the most efficient way to do things. The reason to continue playing dungeons is for the loot and for the company. That is all.
