Charr -- Can't Get Over How Terrible

Charr running animation is quite stupid really. First off, it doesn’t make character go any faster, so it feels really awkward. I see the reasoning, but when you play as charr that doesn’t make any sense and breaks up immersion. The second thing is that is the only animation which makes character run on his fours. If you strafe right/left character will suddenly go bipedal, if you get slow/chill condition character will use bipedal animation as well. Walking? Bipedal. Standing? Bipedal. Not to mention NPCs, I never seen them running on fours.

What you’re seeing there is a mechanics/lore disconnect for the sake of balance. Canonically, charr can outrun any other sapient race on Tyria. In Ghosts of Ascalon, Ember Doomforge uses this to her advantage and outrun basically every ghost in Ascalon City at once. Buuut, we can’t have one race running so much faster than all the rest for reasons of game balance.

As for strafing, that one is simple. Quadrupedal stances don’t strafe well. Since Charr are capable of walking on two legs, they do so to strafe much faster.

Before you say that running is the only animation that has a charr run on all fours, pick up a Greatsword on your Guardian, Ranger, or Warrior and use the dash skill. Or give them a banner and use that dash. The “surprised” emote also has them standing on all fours.

Yes, we can’t have a race which does something better, so we better else have one animation that ruins the immersion. Great stuff.

On strafing point, that could’ve been alright… But there’s no real transition between two states, same with running/standing. Character just jumps into another state as if he’s some sort of spring under high tension. When you draw a weapon there’s at least, somewhat awkward but still, a transition.

I have no free slots and my only charr is engi, so for me it’s still the only gameplay animation as long as I keep my engi weapons. Didn’t know about emote, never used them.

For me running animation looks really disjointed and artificial. My main characters are norn and sylvari, their animations look fluid and solid in comparison. And as I mentioned my charr char is an engi, so it really makes little sense for him to run on his fours, since chances are terrain isn’t that clean, and keeping hands clean helps with precision and all that stuff you need for constructing / making potions etc.

It’s about 10 at night there. I imagine even Gaile has left and gone home.

Well, I started the thread 5 days ago and it seems there are quite few people who have the same problem as I do.

I’ve learned not to press [f] when the prompt is “Greet”.

(That’s a lot cheaper for ANet and does not require me to hold my breath waiting for better NPC AI.)

Well, that’s something we all have to do. However ANet doesn’t have to do anything with AI, they just need to to disable “greet” option for NPCs that have no dialogue options, there are such NPCs out there.

There are numerous NPCs in the game that don’t serve any purpose other than creating illusion of a living world. Which is fine for the most part, especially when they have something to say (dialogue).
However some of them are unnecessary, and even more than that — they are nuisance. I’m talking about NPCs which wander around banks and auctions, sometimes preventing the player from actually using the service by blocking it with the “Greet” option.

It’s not big issue for sure, but for me personally it’s getting more and more annoying. These NPCs don’t even really serve their purpose since real players actually use these services, therefore there’s little need for such NPCs. So I can’t be the only one, right?

Anyway, the simple solution for that would be disabling the “Greet” option for such NPCs. They would still wander around, but would not cause interference. Win win.

I never quite enjoyed the “grinding” part of any game. I prefer leveling, exploring (you can combine these two) or pvping.
And to be honest, in other games it doesn’t really feel like you’re achieving much with new gear either, since everything around you grows stronger as well (well, unless you have the_best_gear_in_the_game maybe).

I personally don’t like the looks of the ascended gear, but I have some other goals, like exploring and stuff. This game has neat level design, and there’s no need to rush through.

I don’t even know what to think about it anymore. Few month ago staff member said that they will look into this (though the message itself was like 4 month late), but since then I haven’t heard anything. I have only single character with unlocked traits, and I really can’t think of farming to unlock traits for the others.

How a new player feels about today's changes.

Garm.9750

“New” Trait system change + this = awful new player experience. Can’t do this, can’t do that. Have to grind this, have to grind that.

Good thing I’ve leveled my necro like year ago, and don’t have to deal with it. I have toons though, and I’d like to level them up at some point. But then I’ll have to deal with all these pointless blocks, which kinda drives me off of doing that. Sure, I’m not a new player, but I have hard time seeing how new players would appreciate that.

I’ll just say obvious thing outloud: don’t fix what isn’t broken.

Old trait system was good, why “fix” that? I never felt bad about “old” leveling / unlocking style, even when I started the game, why “fix” that? There surely was testing before the release, right? I mean you can’t just blindly push such changes? But I have hard time imagining testers who approved such changes…

Gw2 has the best mmo engine ever designed..

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Garm.9750

Garm.9750

In my opinion this engine is far from being best. Graphics is inferior to some others mmorpgs which came out at about same time, yet the frame rate isn’t as stable. And all this fog in the distance is kinda annoying as well, because draw distance is really short. Another thing is pathfinding, playing with pet sometimes might be quite a pain. It’s not exactly engine flaw, but chances are it could be related to it.
In the end it’s a bit sad, because game has superior design. But it seems that the engine can’t keep up with it.

So, this is interesting.

Garm.9750

So I’ve been inactive for about a year and thus missed whole living world thing. Basicly I only finished PS, and now when I started S2 I find myself surrounded by “destiny’s edge 2.0”, and turns out I’m their “boss” too. I have no idea who are they.

I heard a bit about Scarlet and all, but that’s clearly not enough to fill the gap. It’s literally feels like as if I had | amnesia after the fight with Zhaitan, and now I finally awoke but forget instead what happened in the past two years. I’m no longer Commander? Who are those people? What are we doing here?

Sadly, I haven’t find any ingame option to answer these questions, so I would like to ask fellow players to help me. I suppose I could read up GW2 wiki, but that’s not really that entertaining. Maybe there are better ways to gain that sacred knowledge, a.k.a. “wtf is going on”?

Thanks.

Tyrians have been dealing with the Elder Dragons and outside forces trying to killing them all for centuries and longer.

Constant war? Kinda reminds me of medieval Europe. But do you really think people were really be OK with that? I doubt. War and death is scary and pain is something you really want to avoid. It’s really hard to kill your instincts.

We may speculate that there are different races, and that norn and charr would maybe totaly fine being in such place. But then there are asura (not really brave kind), sylvari (emotional race), and humans.

Brightening up situation is alright… But it happens so often that I feel like I’m more emotionaly involved in the whole thing than they are. NPCs are behaving like it is something they are doing on daily basis: brush teeth, clean up room, kill dozen of risen, have a lunch. Even though in fact they kinda do it on daily basis, it still doesn’t really fit if you ask me. Everthing just looks plastic and emotionless to me.

As been mentioned, in some other games (I also can bring up bunch of examples) it was done kinda better, felt more natural.

I just finished regular PS, and I had that feeling as well. Especially when I was doing the last quests in Orr, because generally speaking Orr is a burial to all who lived here, not to mention that dead are unrest as well due to the Zhaitans magic. Yet almost every character I’ve met was in a good mood, some of them were even joking around, or treated giant undead dragon and his army like it was thing they overcome on daily basis.

Again, Orr is quite dark place itslef, not to mention that your friends might become enemies next day. Or that you can become risen yourself (which is according to the dialogues is worse than being just dead). It’s kinda hard to belive in the plot when everything around you tries to show how unserious everything is.

I was really hoping for the improvments in PS in S2, but well…

So I decided to give it another try and do some PvP instead of leveling and stuff.
Well guess what, you need to unlock grandmaster traits even within sPvP. Now that’s a total idiocy, you can’t do things like that. The best part of GW2 was that I could go PvP at any time I wanted. Now I can’t, because only effective condition removal for the ranger is “survival of the fittest”, which is locked GM trait and to unlock it I have to either grind gold and SP, or level to 74 lvl to find the chest in the ship of sorrows.

To all people who are saying that this system is fine… Have you even tried it? It’s always bad when you are forced to do something. There are 5×13 traits per class, to unlock them you’ll need to spend around 60 hours or something. That’s the time it takes to level character in skyrim to level 50, and guess what, skyrim have overall better content and it doesn’t feel like a chore.

Why can't rangers use pistols and rifles?

in Ranger

Garm.9750

No, no guns/rifles… Rangers are not Soldiers….

I don’t really get that. Why guns are only dedicated for soldiers? Hunters use guns too. Besides, ranger can | use greatsword/sword, and those are obviously military weapons.
And I don’t really know why people think that bow is “natural” weapon. Natural weapon is a club or staff. Bows are artificial, just less advanced than a gun.

I dunno about this whole rifles and druidic/nature stuff. I mean, there’s little about class lore in the game, apart from few lines on character creation screen. In fact, I play my ranger as an “adventurer” who have found cub when he was exploring caves, rather than “forest sentinel”.
Fact is, variety = good.

My little story

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Garm.9750

Well, any game has its limit. I mean, there are no games with endless content. I remember warhammer was fun because of the pvp system, but at some point i’ve got fed up with that game too.
In my opinion, one of the best mmorpgs is eve online, there are so many ways to play the game and it’s so dynamic, because it’s driven by players. It’s unusual game though, not everyone likes it. But I think you should give it a try.

Back on track, usually players expectations are not fulfilled. I mean, implementing new types of PvP or PvE content sounds great, but it would require lot work and devs for sure have their own priorities.

Finding these chests is kinda lame. As been mentioned, you know exactly what would be there.
I don’t know how about you guys, but I don’t really find GW2 design and graphcis to be that great, so exploring for the exploring sake doesn’t really appeal to me as much (though I like to complete maps and stuff). On the other hand, I love little details.

Well, lets say that in the end of the cave you find a skeleton with the journal or some lever which reveals hidden door. That would make exploring interesting, because there would be some story (not necessary revealed) behind each cave, ruin, etc.
Sometimes I find such things, but not as often as I would like to. Or maybe I’m just unlucky.

Garm.9750

So… I’ve been inactive for about 10 month and returned back to the game several days ago. I have an 80 level character with unlocked traits (except for 5 grandmaster traits), but I wanted to start a new one, to get fresh experience.

I’ve created ranger (and I like this class so far), but then I stumbled across new traits system and was completely shocked by it. I remember how fun it was to plan and build my first character when I bought the game, but now it’s gone for good. I’m just level 20 with my ranger, but I already feel a bit bored because I know that no matter what, I will not be able to customize my character in a long time. Not to mention that it will cost lot of gold/SP to buy traits.
And by the way, I don’t have enough gold to buy all the traits even though I have 80 level character already. What about new players?

I don’t feel like playing my necro at the moment, but now I neither feel like playing my ranger as well. Other words, I will leave the game until some changes will be made, and I feel like there are other players who left or going to leave the game for the same reason. Though seeing how this thread is 4 month old I have little hope for any changes.

Norn Male & Female, disproportionate?

in Norn

Posted by: Garm.9750

Garm.9750

Because one of the “human” females is taller than the other “human” female. If they were both scaled to the same height and running around in an event, no one would have any clue they were different races. If you scaled a big body type male norn to the height of a male human, he looks different because he has massive proportions. There is nothing remotely like that separating the female norn and the female human like there is for the men and the difference gets even greater when you add bulky armor.

If you were to scale up a human female to norn size, she would look like a norn… as would any male human scaled to norn size.

Actually not. Scaled down norn (or scaled up human) will not look like a human (or norn), because of his proportions (distance between head and chest, wide shoulders etc), and that’s the point.

So, I’ve bought this game in december and this is first time I facing any kind of problem.

It started yesterday, suddenly my game client was closed with “connection lost” type of error. For next hour I couldn’t even re-connect to the game, and when I managed to re-connect, I exprienced enormous lags, at some point game just “froze” (my attacks could do nothing, enemies wont attack, another players standing still), but oddly enough chat was working fine. Since that moment I have few types of problems:

1. Somtimes launcher can’t login (with some “connection error” message). Or sometimes it takes some additional time to login in launcher (about minute or so).

2. I can’t login on my main character (Dan Grimnebulin, norn) at the Diessa Plateu. There is just loading screen with “loading circle” and map info. Though at some point I can hear character “idle animation” movments. Loading screen lasts about few minutes and then I get “the game client lost it’s connection to the server” error. I also can’t login on my Sylvari character.

3. I can login on my human characters but guild chat is laggin, while /say or /map work as usual.

Thanks.
