That is awesome. I love seeing videos like this.

I had a friend in WoW who did this all the time and dragged me along with them. It was so much fun seeing all the unfinished areas.

Nice job.

First off, hats off to the players that did this. Secondly, why report the playres? They have not done anything wrong, they have not gained anything monitary from it or gearwise. All that thhey have done is having a bit of fun, while exploring the ingame content. Noone was hurt, no harm no foul.

Too, I used to do a LOT of this kind of stuff in that other game, besides other crazy stuff. All in the name of having fun and just to see if it could be done. It lent me something to do, gave me one of the toughest personal challenges I coud get but too, made me want to log in and play the game, when I had an “offday”. I miss challenges like this that was not intended, but which you could boast about and back up with a screenie, because you could/went there.

I guess that this, like so many other things ingame, will be punished, the thread will be locked and the players banned. Sad to see, when they should have gotten a pat on the back and a reward for what they’re doing. Evento the extend to put in a title and call it “I was there” or “Parkour Champion”…something that will include instead of exclude and make things more fun to do….

Anyway, good to see things like this is still going on, be that here or in other games.

Then is it time to move wvw out of 100% map complete ?
This is not able to be done in some servers.
That means you won’t be able to make legendary without paying to transfer to a winning side server.

Hmmm, good point you got there, as that would too add to the imbalance of the game.

Paid Transfers is not such a good idea. Why not just not allow people who transfer servers to play in WvW for one week. This would stop people from transferring for WvW purposes.

It means money for the company and share holders….that’s why.

This isn’t some new evil plot to make more money. This was the way it was in Beta and as it was always planned to be. They have been very kind and allowed free transfers for significantly longer then they originally planned. From what I remember the original plan was to stop free transfers 1 month after launch.

If it works like it did in beta, which I suspect it will, it will be cheap (~100 gems) to transfer to a low ranked world. It will be so-so (~400 gems) to transfer to a medium ranked and it will be very expensive (~1000 gems) to transfer to a high ranked world.

And you get those gems how? Too, I don’t see it as a new evil plot at all, just them trying to earn some money on the game. I do hower wish that they would be more honest and upfront about this fact than what is currently the truth of the matter…..

Too, this could become a problem in the way of a “Pay2Win” situation, in that if you got the cash/gems, you can always transfer to the winning servers, while those that do not are left behind…not a very good way of balancing, but good income for the company and its share holders, right?

Well you can always obtain these gems by playing for it (gold to gems). Unfortunately it is necessary. 1 week of no WvW? thats really a little. In the current situation whole guilds transfer to the top servers.

And in time WvW will suffer from this too…we’ll have a situation that Blizzard faced when they moved from server only PVP/Battlegrounds, to the Crossrealms introduction. Multiple players moved to better severs and left the weaker ones behind. To this date, they’re still suffering from the impact of this introduction….one that I fear we’ll see and experience in GW2. In a shift in the WvW balance but too game inpact in an to this date unforseen degree. I fear that the “Pay2Win” will kill off the interest in WvW for the minor servers, since why play if you get steamrolled every time you try?

If the above happens, then the team will have to come up with one or more ways to try and outbalance this, which is an already slippry slope from them having introduced the paid migration to server of choice. Will they try to force players back to the weaker servers? Put up rewards for transfering there? I think they have opened a can of worm, but then it is not the first time they have done so…so, I guess we’ll see what happens and how they’ll deal with it when they reach that bridge….

Guys, these are not patch notes, every single thing they plan to fix is not going to be listed until those updates start rolling out.

No, but still you would have expected them to adress the most prominent problems facing them and the players, in game to current date. If you do not have a solid foundation to build from, the risk of an unsound structure rises exponential.

Open world events not being rewarded enough? He addressed that.

I’m not talking just DE’s here, but too of loot, DR’s………he made no comment or remark about that at all. Wouldn’t you say that is a current and imminent problem that needs to be fixed, more so adressed?

I was also expecting something about that, but we got nothing.
Isn’t they way they phrased it the same way they did before (with the LS update)? That champions and veterans were supposed to have their loots changed.

Very much so, in more than one way too. ;O)

Not disagreeing with you there, but DR and DE’s fall under his talk of making different activities in the game more rewarding I am cautious though because of the achievement token system, i feel like they’re just going leave the DR’s alone as it is, but I’m speculating.

Problem is that this is tied in to the gem shop. In that if you keep the DR on needed drops low (as it is now), you’ll then need to go on the TP to get the said mats that you’ll need for crafting. But lacking enough funds for them (a sit’s hard to make money ingame in the first place), you’ll have to turn to the gems for real money option, to buy the needed mats out.

All in all, you keep a hungry and starved market which is in constant demand, with only one way as a means to get what you need…..

It is a kitten to make money in the open world unless you’re farming Orr DE’s, but I’d had no problems making money to buy mats because I run a lot of dungeons. T6 fine mats are still a little rare to get, but doing a quick AC run will net you about half a gold (25 ish silver for the end reward, 5s a piece for the graveling silvers, then the loot drops). Doing dungeons is a good money maker, and with this new post I’m really hoping that they make open world events get you decent money as well.

But, thing is…not everyone WANTS to run dungeons, myself included. Why should a player be gated to do something they 1) don’t find fun or 2) enjoys? I prefer to earn money in other ways…just that those ways are steep hilled by DR’s and low drop rates.

“Our reward systems need to be exciting, and include things you want to earn over time, but we don’t want to force our players on endless gear treadmills for new tiers of gear we add every 6 months. You won’t see another tier between ascended and legendary in 2013 for example. "

Why Colin, WHY?! You could have shut the door on this topic, but instead left plenty of wiggle room that is going to fuel countless forum debates.

Is 2013 the year of the Ascended Rollout, followed by a press release that you are excited to announce the addition of Transcended Gear for 2014? Post-release developer comments have led me to believe this is the case, along with planned level cap increases.

I understand where they are coming from.

They’ve been held to things they said in 2008 regarding GW2. If I were them, I would always leave room for changes so that they don’t receive the plethora of topics calling them liars.

Also, they stated even during development that there would be level cap increases with expansions.

They have been held to nothing else than what they, themselves, have said and stated over and over, time and time again. They were in NO big hurry before launch to rectify, correct or elaborate on what they had put out as game PR. So…it stands to reason that they were held up by the players against what they had said and promised, as they didn’t do much to change that outcome by and on their own….not till later at the AMA that is.

Short answer: “No!”

Long answer: “No!”

ANet had their chance, they wellknowingly held their players in the dark of this big an impact on the game, while at the same time clearly not taking the concers of the community seriously, or even anticipated it and yet kept silent.

So, no, I’ll keep the game, just play much much less while not fund any further of their goods as to expansions, game store or what else they’ll try to squeeze money from.

As soon as I have found something else, I’m out of this game….was fun till they squitted it up and started to lie to their long time fans and customers…

On another note, I am watching GamebreakerTV early this morning, and there seems to be a lot of butt hurt concerning GW2 WvW at some point in the show, and by people supposedly representing WoW…

Seems to be a lot of butt hurt on these forums as well.

I bought GW2 and never read any “Manifesto” that people keep crying about, and I honestly don’t care about it.

I don’t think its the end of the world at all if they make gear progression in this game, gear progression is in EVERY game, what makes it so bad for GW2 to have it?

I don’t know. My favorite games to play at the moment are GW2, Planetside 2 and MWO. Those three are more than enough to keep me busy until next year when Arma 3, DayZ standalone and Elder Scrolls Online come out.

As long as Anet makes good on all their ideas and promises so far, GW2 will remain the best MMO on the market right now.

That’s the problem and the center of what you call “butt hurt” is all about. That certain things, such as their ideas and promises, aren’t any good any longer. In that that has now been changed.

I can only say that you really should take a minute or two and read through/watch the manifesto video where this is put forth, and with the latest patch, taken back…every single word!

In the original and first Guild Wars MMO game, there was no vertical gear treadmill at all, just a horizontal one for skins/looks and the coolness of the item/s…..so now you know.

I played GW1 for 7 years, and you’re right that it had no vertical progress. But GW1 was not an MMO, it was a COORPG (cooperative online RPG), so it was not a consideration in the question asked. The gameplay is similar, but its fully instanced design puts a distinct line between the two genres.

Too, GW2 isn’t a MMO either according to ANet, but instead an “Online World”…..still don’t take away that to the broader audeince, both GW and GW2 falls into and under the MMO umbrella…anyway, sorry for the derailing and the splitting hairs.

Horizontal progression my azz that doesn’t work and the game was bleeding people fast with that standalone. A mmorpg just can’t do that alone in this day in age.

In which age did an MMO even try horizontal progression? We’ve had over a decade of vertical progression/gear grind MMOs. We don’t have a way of knowing of the game is “bleeding people”, and we certainly don’t know if lack of vertical progression is a primary cause of people leaving the game. I would agree that the game population is lower now than it was a month ago, but that is to be expected after any game’s “honey moon phase”.

GW2 was a well-hyped, highly anticipated game, and a sequel to another very popular game. Take a look at a few games in similar situations, particularly those requiring a service like Steam (for player stats) and having online/multiplayer as a primary feature. I think any recent Call of Duty game can fit this bill, with multiplayer being the main feature and even having post-release content/DLC to keep players longer. These games peak in concurrent players shortly after release. Everyone gets their new toy on release day, and they all play it. The ones that don’t like it as well will stop playing it, others will playthrough the story once and quit because that’s the part they wanted to see. There is massive list of reasons why someone would choose to stick with, or stop playing, any given game.

In the original and first Guild Wars MMO game, there was no vertical gear treadmill at all, just a horizontal one for skins/looks and the coolness of the item/s…..so now you know.

Ascended gear and vertical stat progression:

- Will the stat progression peak FOREVER at one point as in Guild Wars 1 and never increase again?
- *Is ANet keeping the (very steep) grind for stats represented by ascended gear the same way it is now? *
- Are there plans for future higher tiers of gear?
- Are there plans for future tiers of infusions for ascended gear?

WvW:
- If stats are going to keep increasing, is there a plan to isolate WvW from the increasing gear gap to keep it minimally fun?
- Is the cash shop heading to a Pay to Win model, having in mind the steep grind for stats recently introduced and the high competitive advantage that gear gives in WvW?

Open world
- What is going to be done to address open world zones from going obsolete after you’re past their level range?
- What is going to make people play OUT of instances again after they’re 80?

General heading of the game

- What kind of player are you trying to cater to? Have you switched your target audience?
- Why do we have to grind for stats now? What happened to the “grind for looks only” philosophy?
- Why did you drop the “the whole game is the endgame” premise? What’s the new premise?
- Was there a change in management?
- How do you feel about people that say you betrayed your Manifesto?

By the way, thanks for taking the non-redditor questions to the AMA and keeping it objective and constructive =)

My questions too for the AMA!

I love this game still and hate the community and how they behave… Or at-least the community on the forum.
It reminds me all too much of what I see in other games, players not actually reading what developers write, thinking about how changes actually impact them or responding in sensible manners.

But then again you are all the 90% right, whatever your idea is EVERYONE holds the same idea.

I find it funny that people talk about grind in ascended gear, the rings drop and fairly easily with one guarenteed and if you cannot afford a black slot after doing over EIGHTY fractal dungeons I have to ask… How bad are you at this game… I mean seriously I get what 60silver roughly per three dungeons at LOW LEVEL DIFFICULTY in those dungeons… You get through 80 dungeons + to the level you are required to actually use the back slot item and you get a ring AND can afford a backslot item… It is that simple.

The stats on the item make a 1%-2% difference to your OVERALL character strength which is NOTHING and a lesser difference than rare to exotics. And makes no difference in world vs world, especially if we cannot select runes and have rune effects in play (and people who use runes for their stats only and don’t work with the effects are just bad players, like the glass cannon only groups, lacking in intelligence)

There is still no gear grind in the game that isn’t optional, none that effects the gameplay in a meaningful way and ascended isn’t even a grind atm due to how they implemented it.

All I see is a bunch of people having a kneejerk reaction without actually having a closer look at how it will effect them and the way the game is played.

lol i have looked closely. it’s hours and hours of a grind in content some of us hate. How difficult is that to understand. the rings don’t always drop. How can you say what is a grind for some of us? It’s not optional. stop saying that. the stats are at least 20% better than exotics. not optional.

Buutttt you don’t need them, the stats are 8% better than an exotic and you don’t need them outside of fractals and even then only after level 11…
That 8% stat bonus is a 1-2% character power bonus at best and even less as you cannot get a full set yet.

Multiple analyses have shown its at least 20%, lol. This is only the beginning.

You have the basis stats, then you get to use the various degrees of infusions on top of that….so yes, the endning stats are going to be higher than “just” the 8% that you’re trying to pass off. So, Columba is right.

If you want I can pull the math for you from Reddit on this….

Too I don’t think you and I will get much of an indepth explanation from then at the Q&A et al, but rather a brush off and a around the bush, IF they’re going to accept any questions about the introduction of the vertical gear treadmill/Ascendend gear. I’ll be willing to give them the benefit of teh doubt, but personally, that is as far as I’m willing to go….not one hair on the leg of a fly closer than that.

First of +1 for the OP!

By jeopardizing your brand’s image you are liable to lose any future chance of new consumers or old consumers giving you a second chance.

I can agree with that. There’s 3 companies who’ve made MMOs that I will never have anything to do with again….Funcom, (Age of Conan)

So Anet had best not do like those companies did because a lot of people will remember.

You are now about the 10th person I have read who refuses to ever buy a Funcom product again. I did not personally like The Secret World, played in beta, but thought many did. Then Funcom announced that box sales were lower than expected (about 200,000).

I was surprised and was curious as to some of the reasons. My net search led me to many posts where people mentioned that they hated Funcom products because of the mess they made with another MMO years ago. Someone on this forum told me it was Age of Conan.

Consumers never forget and rarely forgive when they feel betrayed or deceived.

I too am one of those that have refused to buy any games coming out of Funcom, and for same reason… AoC. I played it and haven’t forgotten it this many years later. The same goes for Vanguard (Sigil/SoE), SW:TOR (Bioware/AE), WAR (Mythic/EA) and now ANet is on that list too.

For the same mentioned reasons. They went back on their words, lied or twisted truths and screwed their customers over good and hard. I doubt that I will willingly go back to play any of their games again in the future from what I have seen when it come handling of the fan and player base.

Somethings just sticks too deep, and makes it harder for a brand to return a following to, once they startdown that slippery slope. Not that it can’t be done, just that it takes a lot of work to regain tha trust once more.

Trust is like an eraser. It gets smaller and smaller with every mistake you make…..

Too, a lot of talk has spread out to the forums on other gaming sites and blogs, about Anet having dropped the ball, turned their back on the manifesto and so on. All the while asking for clearification on what the new stand means for the game, and what the future plans are for the game as a whole.

And yet….all is silent from Anet HQ.

I won’t be getting the armor in the first place, IF I continue to play this game. IF I continue to play (which very much depends on the action ANet will take after the 180¤ turn and squitty event), I might just end up doing do crafting, farming mats for same and not invest much in anything major when it comes to ingame content, be that present or future.

This is just the first step in a direction that we’ll be seeing more of after the introduction of the gear treadmill to the game, and the new dungeon….I had hoped that it was to be left behind in some of the other games and leave GW2 and its playerbase out of it. This has been getting on my nerves. 90% of A-net posts on this forum are completely useless like this one. They really need to hire better Community Coordinators.. the ones on the WoW forums ACTUALLY take the time to address player concerns and discuss the game instead of this petty nonsense.

Much as I hate to say it, it is because they, at Blizzard, have over the years learned it the hard way that this pays off in the long run. Something they could learn from at ANet and take to heart.

As a company, Zynga sees most of its revenue come from a small group of big spenders. For Zynga, losing 25% of the lowest spenders would likely have less impact than losing the 1% of top spenders.

I’m going to go ahead and assume this is the same for Anet as it is for Zynga. Chances are these changes are made to appeal to the people actually funding their game. As games are made as a way to make money, how can you be upset by this? Who cares about the manifesto, at the end of the day profitability is what matters.

I don’t think there’s anything to ‘make good’ on, this change is probably $$ driven and losing a bunch of players who aren’t buying gems isn’t going to impact them.

I care because I didn’t buy into a WoW clone or to have a gear treadmill being put in the game…it’s as simple as that.

So many tears! What’s so bad about gear grind! As far as I can tell this gear only helps you in specific areas, so its not like they’ll have a leg up when newer content arrives! This is exactly what they did in GW1, except they did it with titles, which are MUCH less enthralling than gear, hence GW1 was labelled a game with no endgame grind, even though there was QUITE a bit post prophecies.

This is a must have because everyone reached max level and had literally nothing to do. Nice now they have something to do. Its not like the gear grind allows ppl to instagib people in pvp, it just lets them tank boars in pve better, why do you care? The boar doesn’t.

It’s bad when you say one thing, sells a product that is clearly stated to N O T contain it, and then turns around on the spot and goes back on your word. The gear treadmill is NOT a must, and to most of the playerbase that bought and are playing this game is a REALLY huge part of WHY they invested their money and free time to play the game.

I care because this is not what GW2 should be part of or centered around…we have other games for that, for those so inclined. It was this that was to set GW2 APART from the rest of the games, in not having it as a game mechanic and design….

A dissaster.
Another one for our personal blacklist, EA, Funcom, NCsoft, Mythic/Bioware.

I have been trying to point out how other companies have made similar blunders and lost revenue/customers because of it. Thank you for bringing up Funcom.

Funcom made “The Secret World.” By their own admission and investor update, the game failed to meet its box sales projections (only 200,000 sold). After I read this, I started looking for reasons. I found many people saying they would never buy anything produced by Funcom. Something about a horrible MMO they made years ago. Years ago? Customers do not forget.

Whether or not, Funcom’s tarnished brand from a previous product was really the reason for TSW lackluster sales may never be known. However, company executives should continue to study their peers’ blunders and discuss strategic creation based on lessons learned. Brand/customer loyalty has been shown to be a strong determining factor in sustainable profitability.

Funcom made Age of Conan back in 2008, and I’m one of those that swore never to buy another of their games from that……..

My friends and I love these changes. And I am almost certain that most of the people whining are the GW1, GW2Guru guys. lol

<= Am neither.

I am however a player that bought two copies of the game for me and my gal, based on the manifesto and the core value of GW2 not having any gear treadmill, that I had come to know and loath so much in other MMO’s….foolish me, foolish me for trusting this.

This was absolutely the stupidest idea from ANet. Didn’t they learn from the Halloween event? Players don’t want 1 time only event that will flood and crash servers.
A miserable failure ANet. Don’t ever do this again.

You know, Christmas is just around the corner…….

I believe this is a debacle. Some suggestions on how to make good

Stop whining its getting old,

How about you stopping telling others what they should or should not do?

There is more than a good cause for alarm here, but I guess some fails to see that the Titanic has hit the Iceberg and are fine, just listening to the band playing on while the ship sinks……

If infusions are only for endless dungeons, we don’t have to take part in them.

No, but it will leave behind the not infused playerbase that would want to play the endless dungeons…..i.e. why go back and do stuff you have already surpassed yourself when there’s no incentive to do so?

I’m more worried if they have a plan, and what that is after having scrapped and torn out the manifesto and core value of this game…..

“one-time events that occur in the middle of a workday for most of the playerbase”
Is that a joke ?? Sunday is a workday for most of the playerbase ?? Get real will you…

Depends on which time zone you live in……….

My arguement was against “most of the playerbase”. Most of the player base is EU and US times – making the event in the 8-11 PM Sunday EU time and midday Sunday US time. So unless you work Sundays its ok time wise. And claiming that most of the player base works on sundays(in the US) is stupid to say the least. Not the mention the original poster did not even think of the EU players for witch this time is probably the best.

OP is apparently angry that he did not take part but claiming he is part of the majority is a terribly weak argument. MOST of the playerbase do NOT work sundays. And MOST of the playerbase get back at home early on Sunday evenings due to Monday being work/school day for MOST of the playerbase.

Understandable that that playerbase is squid as a kangaroo, but yeah….

Uhm…one can get infraction for just quoting for what they said? Why?

Because A.Net doesn’t like being called out when they lie. I’m sure they will use some mumbo jumbo about “out of context”, and “That is not really what the president meant.”

Actually: if so, why is this topic still open?
They do not remove every single negative post, actually most of them is still here, that’s why this topic is so long.
They even stopped removing off-topic posts from this thread! All the posts about getting refund, how to get a refunt, I got a refund, get a refund for example: they’re still here.
Normally every topic that has “run it’s course” and “derailed” is closed. But not htis one, for some reason.

I actually think it’s being left open for a purpouse: so that whoever made those stupid decision can clearly see what the feedback and the reactions are.

It’s left open because if they close it, another one will just start in it’s place. I’m not sure if they are still merging into this thread, but I see at least 4 or 5 posts on the main page that are of the same vein as this one. I think they have decided to just let it blow over and die a slow death. Hopefully, it doesn’t and this pain train goes on for awhile.

It’s too late as it’s out on the web too, and others have taken notice of what is/has been going on here…don’t think it’ll be long before some of the major gaming sites catches up and starts to write about this huge pile of fish dung.

“Rather than make a typical complaint post, I’ve decided to explain why I think Guild Wars 2 is a flawed game.”

“The simple solution to this is: don’t play Guild Wars 2. If you don’t like how ArenaNet has lied to you, then quit and do not support them. "

Interesting intro/outro for someone who thinks stated manifestos are written in stone.

I think it’s more a question of sincerity and forwardness with a player base than anything else…..If ANet had been forward and told this as it is instead of going back on a core value of the game, much of what we have seen so far of forum posting would have been greatly deminished.

What is interesting is that usually ANet is pretty fast to come out and PR the stuff that has just ended…this time, not so much as a word have been posted on the blog, FB, here or anywhere else….not a word at all.

As of Now

“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content. As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”

- Lindsey Murdock, Game Designer

3 Months Earlier

“Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.”

-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet

If ANET had any decency, they’d have conducted a log-in poll shortly after this Ascended scandal began. Unfortunately, if they conducted one now, they will be missing quite a number of people that have quit and already uninstalled the game.

But the lack of any serious attempt to get reliable, statistically significant customer input on the matter shows that the industry hasn’t learned anything from the SWG-NGE fiasco or the CCP fiasco that almost took EVE down.

SW:TOR, Vanguard, WAR and AOC says hello too……….

I’m going to put the game on hold for a bit, both from me having an examn to pass at the end of the week (and yet I take time to sit here and type this instead of studying) but most of all in the light of how utterly horrible the event was implemented, carried out and finished, on top of the complete throwing away of the original game design manifesto of “no gear treadmill in GW2” in introducting the new gear.

I won’t lie and say that I don’t feel let, BIG TIME by ANet, nor that I have pretty much lost the incitement to stay with the MMO genre after 10 years spanning various more or less successful games in that time. I’ll properbly head back to Minecraft/Tekkit, or even to solo games like TL2 and stay there while monitoring the progess/infractioning of GW2 and its future content….
