I ran a Guardian with a pure support build for awhile. Guardians are built for boons, which make them a pretty good fit for support. Recently, I switched to a DPS build and I definitely see a deference in the team’s success during dungeon runs. So, I would recommend a Guardian with a support build (and there are plenty of examples on the Guardian boards).
I think Engineers have a some pretty good support options with elixirs and kits.
But, all classes have the ability to run support builds. So, the most important factor, is if the class is fun for you to play.
4 legendary weapons….wow.
And what is “stat advanced legendarys”? I have not heard of that.
Warrior is a fine choice for soloing and for groups.
If you are enjoying it, play it. That goes for all the classes. Some classes are more newb/solo friendly (like heavy armor wearers), but every class is viable and there are no undesirable classes in GW2 like you see in other games.
The game has only been out for five months. How long do you think you’ve been away?
Just kidding, really any class is good. Play what you find fun and you will be good to go.
so you might want to consider wiping the slate clean and starting fresh on your friends server.
Can you do that? I honestly don’t know…
Please let us know, if you are successful switching servers by deleting your characters (if you go that way).
You may be out of luck, sorry. I don’t think I have read anything about bringing them back anytime soon.
But, you never know, they might, so keep your eyes open. In the mean time, you still play with your friends through the guesting feature.
Don’t forget your Thumper. You can drop it and it will tank while you take care of business (at least most of the time).
How much karma do you have? If you were doing your dailies, then you probably are pretty close to having enough for a full set. Doing renown hearts and running with the zerg in WvW will help with getting karma.
This comes up frequently. I would actually be happy to PvP for this set, but not being able to wear it in PvE afterwards makes that thought irrelevant.
I have the perfect character for this set sigh
From the patch notes:
“All weapon and armor skins now have the option to be converted to PvP skins. When activating a skin you will be given the choice to either apply the skin to a PvE item or convert the skin to a PvP-only item. Either action will consume the skin. This change applies to all unused weapon and armor skins in the game, regardless of when the skin was first released.”
I hope this means PvP skins for PvE, as well.
No.
I wish they would get rid of levels all together.
If you are looking for raid type end game, then no it hasn’t changed. There are no raids.
But, this game is more open ended when you get to 80. At 80, I started to work on my armor and weapon skins, finnished my storyline and continue to explore the zones.
If you are looking for large group play, then WvW is probably as close to it as you are going to get in GW2.
If you don’t like exploration, creating your “look” and WvW (or PvP); then you are probably still not going to like this game.
Neither is better with a group, they both can be successful, if played by a player that understands the class.
Some might argue that warrior has better support skills, if that is the type of play you would like to play.
Ranger is a little more forgiving since you can kite more successfully, I suppose.
I would recommend continue leveling both at the same time. It has been my experience, when leveling more then one class at a time, that I will eventually settle on one of them.
It’s not masquerade either, I thought it was Tribal.
But, I could be wrong…
This is a very open question and you are not going to get a good answer. You are going to hear every single opinion about every class.
The truth is, every class is very capable in dungeons, if played correctly. Some classes are a little more forgiving and some are a little more complex, but they all can succeed in every aspect of the game.
The question you have to ask yourself is, what is your preferred play style?
Do you like range or close combat?
Do you like pets?
Answer those two first and we can start to narrow down what is a good fit for you.
If you don’t feel comfortable or you can trust the player base answer, then it wont matter where you post it.
Players helping players is typically friendlier to questions, especially questions from players that are not experienced with GW2.
If you don’t trust the answer or simply think it is above the player base knowledge, then I would suggest submitting the question to the Support team.
But, it has been my experience, that you typically get the right answer here and if we don’t know it, then we will direct you where to find the right answer.
Flame and Frost: Prelude goes live today. I do not believe an exact time that the patch will go live has been announced. We will just have to wait.
Also, I do not think there is an event associated with this patch, like we saw in holiday content. There is a narrative, I suppose. But, I am not sure we are going to see anything like the last three events.
The G600 looks like a monster. Can you play the game with the just the mouse?
Do you like managing pets and playing from range (mostly)?
Or would you rather have a more in-your-face, chasing down the enemy type combat with limited range options?
Answer these questions and you probably will have your answer.
And by “Hunter” he means ranger:)
Oh gaaaahhh!!! I am showing my age….
yeah yeah…i meant ranger.
I keep reading that in group scenarios the rangers pets often become a liability. is this true?
Pathing for all classes with pets (permanent or temporary) can be an issue. It really depends on how well you adapt. I have never played a hunt….errrr….ranger, so others can speak with more authority about that class. But, I have known very effective rangers in dungeons, PvE and WvW.
What do you mean by help?
Support? Then probably engineer.
AOE-ing large groups….probably Hunter and maybe engineer.
All out single target dps…theif (but they have aoe, as well).
Really, they can all do support or dps. When it comes to picking a class, it depends more on your playstyle then which roll you want to fill.
I would suggest checking out the Warrior boards. I suspect they have plenty of discussions and opinions on Condition vs. Power builds.
According to in-game elitists, cooking is /the most expensive craft of all/. I guess it’s really subjective. I mean, if you know how to get money it’d be super cheap. But for those who are clearly monetarily incompetent, it’s near impossible. I got my cooking to level 27 on a character with just 10s. So I mean, eh. Guess it just depends.
Whats up with you and thinking people that are experienced with GW2 are elitists?
Anyway, the player that focuses on making gold finds leveling any craft just as expensive as anyone else. They just have the resources to lessen the impact.
I think cooking was the craft that I found most rewarding to level. It was definitely the most interesting. And I don’t farm for gold or play the TP.
If you don’t want to buy all your mats, I would suggest gathering mats as you level and just wait till your close to 80 before you start your crafting. Its a great way to grab a couple levels when you really want them. You should have plenty of mats by then, especially if you save and salvage everything. You can also level alts to gather mats to help out.
- Casual player friendly? I can’t play more than a few hours here and there, so is this game casual friendly?
Yes! This is probably one of the best reasons to play this game. You can log on for less than an hour and feel like you are doing some productive and fun.
This is a great game for a casual player. Jump into WvW and see how the war is going. Try your hand at PvP and see how you measure up to other players. Or explore a zone and complete some events, find a vista or just discover a little piece of lore.
All these things can be done in minutes of logging on. I would recommend giving it all a try.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time in Tyria!
Id like to see logging as a way of providing mats for carpentry, but err.. no player housing means nowhere to put items.
Same could be said for painting (mats from gathering) or Sculpting with mats from mining !
Wouldn’t this be a great teaser for future content!
I hope they use a little more creativity coming up with a new profession then the same one you see in just about every mmo.
Just my opinion though, and if you like fishing then it probably will differ.
Yeah, you can preview all the dungeon armors at the badge vendors in LA.
@ Space Cow
I have asked this of players before and I mean it as an honest question.
How much gold do you feel you need to meet your expectations to play this game?
I think it is unfair for players to say that Anet is not meeting expectations, but not let them know what are the player’s expectations. (and what I got from your original post was that the returns were just not enough)
I will agree that the returns for defeating epic events should be a little more representative of the effort. But, I don’t think anyone should get rich off of doing only events.
Concerning travel costs, I really do not see that as a problem. Just by playing the game, I seem to make enough to cover basic costs like travel and repairs. And I am talking about simply playing Pve content and running with WvW zergs, not purposely playing to make money.
I agree that I would love to see legendary weapons acquirable through other paths. This goes back to your first point about rewards equaling effort. But, at this point, Anet decided not to go down this path. It may change in the future. Luckily, those items are very few and do nothing in the game other then cosmetic.
Try switching servers. You can do it for free for a couple more days.
I am on Anvil Rock. It is a predominantly PvE server. I see people in most lower level areas doing all sorts of things.
As a disclaimer, some racial areas are less popular than others. So, if you are in one of those areas, then you might be out of luck no matter where you go.
Exploring the game is not elitist. It is one of the best ways to quickly gain levels. If you are not into exploration then this game may not be for you.
How much gameplay do you expect out of a single game? This is an honest question and one that doesn’t seemed to be asked too often.
Do you want 500 hrs? 600? 1000+? What is realistic for you and what you think a company can (and should) supply for your investment?
There are a lot of people saying there is not enough content for the long run, but that determination seems to be after hundreds (if not thousand) of hours of play. Shouldn’t we discuss our expectations before we start saying that Anet is not living up to what we want?
Or do we just expect that there should be unlimited amount of content to continue to provide entertainment for as long as we want (or can) play?
But….transfers are limited to once every seven days.
It wasn’t on the support forums. I sent an email to the support desk. If your feeling a little uneasy about it, just send them an email and get a response to have on record.
I think it took a day or two for them to get back to me.
I asked this awhile back through the support desk. They said I could run two clients at the same time (if my computer could handle it).
There are Bar Brawl achievements, actually there are four achievements. It is on the same page as the keg brawl achievements.
Now, how you complete them? I don’t know…
Actually, hacked accounts seem to be decreasing since release and the addition of the mobile authentication. But, to answer your question, there is no absolute guarantee that you will not be hacked with any system.
Mobile authentication and email verification are tools that help prevent hacking, but it is no guarantee.
Those tools, plus a reputable virus protection (which you scan your computer regularly) and changing your password on a regular basis are the best things to do that maximize your protection.
You also can get Karma and coin from WvW. I would say WvW is another way to get xp. Sometimes it seems to move quicker when leveling, but I have found that a combination of WvW and PvE is the best way to level.
You can play a Warrior defensively and as a support build, just as effectively as any other class. Don’t let anyone tell you differently!
Why not level two (or more) characters at once? When one character starts to bother you, just switch to the other for awhile. My guess is you will eventually settle into one of the characters for a main, but maybe not.
Leveling goes very quickly and even leveling two characters will not take you very long.
Have you cleared your entire zone map to 100%? That has always gotten me to the appropriate level for the next zone.
I realize you stated that you don’t like exploring, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) this game favors and rewards the explorer.
I leveled my second character by WvW, keeping up with my storyline and crafting to keep me geared. That might be an option since you like PvP.
Honestly, as you have probably seen, compared to nearly every other game on the market, this game levels very quickly.
Welcome back, Yeatrel!
A good thread on this subject has recently started here:

Good Luck!
Name: Grayn
Main Character: Grist Lautertun
Current Server: Anvil Rock
Interested Activities: Socialising, Dungeons, PvE, WvW
Active: Play mainly afternoons and weekend mornings (EST, -5 GMT)
Additional Comments: Been playing since the BWEs, played most triple-A mmos, have an 80 engineer/80 guardian(main) and a mesmer (work in progress)
Are you willing to participate in Operation: UNION’S project, Y/N?: Of course.
I have been doing pretty well with the guides found here:
From an interview with Colin Johanson in 2011:
“Q: How the AI of enemies will work? Specifically, how enemies will chose their target? Will they be capable of complex behaviour and combat strategies?
…. In regards to AI and aggro… simple creatures will use an AI system to determine who attack, and one of the most important criteria will be who is the closest target to them, but there are also criteria like who’s doing damage, how much damage they’ve done… and other things like that. These are basic things that most creatures would use. Then there will be unique AI for a number of different creatures that will use specific skills or the entire creatures will do different things than that. There may be creatures, for example, who attack the furthest away player in the party. There may be creatures who try to focus on people wearing medium armor or light armor, and try to chase them around. …."
You can do a lot of testing or guessing, but the truth is that this is about as much information Anet has given on the subject. By purpose, there is no solid answer to keep you on your toes.
So, to answer the OP, it depends. It depends on what mob you are fighting and who you are (and what you are doing). Keep your head in the game. Don’t let your guard down. And expect your the (next) target.
My guess is you’re going to be disappointed if you power level to 80 “to play with other people”.
If you just want company and you cant find anyone in the zones, I would suggest to participate in WvW. If there is no one in WvW, as well as PvE, then you may want to switch servers.
I found a quick way to level is to run WvW and do your storyline. But, I would agree with the other posters, enjoy the exploration because a level 80 is not having that much more fun then a level 7.
Welcome to the game, Terratoise!
A one stop shop for a lot of your questions can be found at the wiki!
Start here and see what you find:

And I would disagree with Blarrg, I would stay away from the sub-forums and stick with research and experience, until you get an idea of the classes at least.
Depends on what you want to do…
“Map names on the world map now display completion status”
Thanks for listening, Anet!
(edited by GraynX.8947)
Yep, that is all you have to do.
Crystal Desert is a tough one. It is one of the top tier WvW servers, which as you seem to know, has a lot of active players, a lot of players trying to transfer on and not a lot of people trying to transfer off.
Try logging on around 5-7 am in Pacific Standard Time. (This is Anet’s server time.) No promises, but it might be the time the server transfers are done and you might get a window.
Don’t forget you can still play and get a free server transfer. At least you can do that now, it will change here sometime soon, I suppose.
Welcome to GW2, Dreadflame!
Server choice may matter, but it may not be a big issue.
If you plan to play a lot of WvW, you may want to try to get into a competitive server. If you go that route, you should expect long queues for WvW, but a good standing. There are some servers that are lower tiers, your able to get in instantly and still very active, but don’t expect to be leading the score boards.
In PvE, it is hit or miss. My server tends to be populated in most zones, but there are times that things slow down. If you are concerned about getting into dungeon parties, you can party with players from other servers. A great fansite to facilitate meeting with other players is http://gw2lfg.com/.
I would suggest, as others have already, take your time. This game awards the explorer and completionist. Complete your zone maps to 100%. There is more in the zone that is on the map. Look around and if you see something that catches your attention, explore it.
If you can climb it or go into it, do it! I can speak from experience, you might be surprised when you get to the top (or bottom)!
