Am i the only one who's irritated by this?

It doesn’t irritate me, but I prefer staves, because it keeps the continuity of Old English ‘stæf, stafas’ – where the ‘f’ in ‘stafas’ is pronounced as a ‘v’ – to Middle English ‘staf, staves’, to Modern English ‘staff, staves’.

I ordered my guardian t-shirt last Wednesday (12/16/15), it shipped by the end of the same day (I had ordered mid-morning), and it arrived today (Monday, 12/21/15). I’m sure it helped that I’m in the same state that the merchandise shipped from.

I agree with Donari regarding the quality. The soft material feels nice, not stiff and itchy like other t-shirts I’ve had. It’s also lightweight, so it won’t be uncomfortable to wear in the heat.

As far as the placement of the design, perhaps there’s a difference between the fitted vs. unisex shirts. My guardian design is high enough not to be an issue at all. I’m quite pleased, and I will likely get some of the other shirts, too.

This is a thing?

Braham Eirsson - a wrong name

It’s not unheard of in Icelandic culture for someone to have a name based on their mother’s name, rather than their father’s. As such, it’s not out of the ordinary for the Norn to have the same thing.

Here are some examples of matronymics used:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hei%C3%B0ar_Helguson
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gu%C3%B0r%C3%BAn_Eva_M%C3%ADnervud%C3%B3ttir

Here’s one with both a patronymic and a matronymic:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dagur_Berg%C3%BE%C3%B3ruson_Eggertsson

“Matronyms were used exceptionally if the child was born out of wedlock or if the mother was much more high-born or well known than the father, a historical example being Sweyn Estridsson.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patronymic#Nordic_countries

Also, related but somewhat off-topic, there doesn’t seem to be any consistency to whether it’s -son and -dottir or -sson and -sdottir.

Probably about how it sounds when spoken.

Whether it’s -son/-sson or -dottir/sdottir depends on what the possessive form of the parent’s name happens to be. A man named Helgi would have a son named Helgason and a daughter named Helgadottir, while a man named Gudmundur would have children named Gudmundsson and Gudmundsdottir, respectively.

You shouldn’t have that many patches. We had one yesterday, which held the balance changes they’ve been working on, and then a bug-fix one today. Usually we go days or even weeks between these new builds. Please give it a bit more of a try, you may have just hit at exactly the wrong time.

Exactly this. The patches are typically every other Tuesday, with a couple of additional updates within the next day or so. Take a look at the Game Release Notes to see the typical update pattern.

Nodes will also disappear if an event starts. I notice it frequently around the dam outside Divinity’s Reach. If the harpy or elder earth elemental event starts, the nodes will disappear. After the event finishes, the nodes will return.

This may be too little, too late, as it seems you’ve already made up your mind, but regarding the ‘randomness’ of the heart tasks, this may help. Make it a point to talk to the NPC first. They do offer up some dialog pertaining to the task, which changes once the heart is completed. It may help to give you a sense of why you’re doing what you’re doing. It also sounds like you might be in a starter area, which is kind of like the ‘help your neighbour’ phase of the game, which is why you’re doing these mundane tasks. You’re the hero of your race, as per the events in the tutorial, so you’re tasked with helping out the less fortunate in your own backyard before setting out on your adventure.

One of the first NPCs you should have come across after completing the beginner part is a scout, who points out the nearby heart tasks and such. Those are the closest thing to quests in GW2, but you don’t actually need to pick them up from a quest giver, nor do you need to turn them in at a quest giver when done, for the most part. If you mouse over a heart, you should see a number. If you need a little bit of guidance in where to go, I suggest doing the hearts in numerical order (even though that sounds horribly robotic) and doing any events that happen to pop up in your vicinity while you’re working on the hearts.

When you’re in the neighborhood of a heart task, and you’re actively completing its goals, you’ll likely see a bar in the upper right corner of your screen filling up, either as you kills mobs nearby, gather relevant nodes for turn in or whatever else the heart task may require. When the bar fills, you’ve completed the task. You don’t actually need to talk to the relevant NPC. They do, however, become a merchant who will sell items for karma, which is a form a currency earned in game.

As far as a newbies guide is concerned, if I’m not mistaken, there is a link to the online manual on the game’s launcher. To be honest, I haven’t read it, so I’m not sure how newbie friendly it is, but it couldn’t hurt to check it out.

I can also all but guarantee that there will be a flood of posts offering additional helpful advice forthcoming, so keep checking back here on the forums.

That said, welcome to Guild Wars 2! I hope you enjoy your stay in Tyria.

P. Story Tech to Add Fights to the World

They might. The main issue is that if they give good enough rewards lvl 80 players will simply swarm them and take some of the challenge away due to higher overall stats.

What if the fights were intended for level 80s, perhaps as a means of counteracting the ’there’s nothing to do at level 80’ issues that some people have?

You can’t have fights that are intended for level 80’s in pre-80 zones.

I mean, what if these fights spawn, and there’s no level 80’s around to do them?

That’s why I suggested that they use the Personal Story instance method. They could be located in any zone, regardless of the zone’s level range, and because the fights would be accessible by way of the in game Personal Story star marker (or some other similar marker), they wouldn’t be a disruption to the normal workings of the zone.

There would be no need to create any kind of lore or back-story for these fights…

I can’t say I agree with that.

Just plonking fights in that don’t fit with any sort of lore, or have any story whatsoever makes them a separate part of the GW universe.

Just look at Legendaries. Flameseeker Prophecies is the only legendary that has any correlation with the world.

If anything, the most challenging fights would present the most danger to the world, thus would require a back-story as to why they pose a threat.

I was thinking that, because these bosses would be based on location, and as such would be of the same type of mob that would already be found in that location, there’d be no need to explain lorewise why they are there, just as there’s no need to explain where there are veteran or champion mobs sometimes lurking in the far reaches of some of these open world locations.

I would say it is fully possible to have challenging fights out in the open world. There are already several that already exists (the Karka Queen, Temple of Grenth, Temple of Balthazar and such).

Would those kinds of encounters work as well in sub-80 zones, do you think?

So basically making the game less open world and more instanced?
I don’t think many people would agree with that.

Disagreements are perfectly acceptable. Is it possible, do you think, to implement challenging fights in the open world, taking into consideration that anyone and everyone could come along to take part in them, or would they need to be drastically toned down to account for the diversity of player types that might show up?

I think that every cave, every forest, every building and so on in the open game world could potentially be a location for a challenging boss fight using the same instance technology as that used for the Personal Story. For example, imagine you come across a cave while out and about, and at the entrance a green star appears to let you know that there’s a boss fight inside. Anyone not interested in the fight could pass through the cave as they normally would, while those who wanted the challenge could enter the boss’s instance via the star icon.

There could be different types of bosses based on the location (ie. bosses specific to caves, others specific to forests, and still others specific to buildings), and the spawn could be randomly determined upon entering the instance. There would be no need to create any kind of lore or backstory for these fights, because their sole purpose would be hopefully to provide the challenge that some people crave, and as such, hopefully no one would feel ‘forced’ to do them.

I would suggest looking at the weapon and armor sets on the wiki, deciding which one(s) you want, and then going from there. Keep in mind that gear is primarily aesthetic, so choose what you like the looks of.

My level 80 guardian’s box contained rare leggings and a rare shield. I sold them on the trading post for about 55 silver total. I’m curious to know if other people’s gear had stats that seemed to skew them towards a certain playstyle (my two pieces had seemingly healer-friendly properties).

This works for me, perhaps it’ll help you:
Let your personal story dictate which zone you’re in.
Let the hearts guide you through the zone. They’re numbered, so follow them in
sequence. Gather everything and do every event along the way.
Get 100% map completion before following your story to the next zone.
End each questing session with a crafting session, unless you prefer to sell your gathered materials.
