Make 1st Person Great Again

I haven’t seen a single game that had both first and third person animations done well (yes, I have played the TES series, including a few hours of ESO; the third person animations are abysmal in every installment that has them). It would take a lot of time and money to make both viable, beautiful, and immersive, while most people are happy having only one of the two.

Since HoT release has the game improved much?

Hashar.6082

In my opinion, Season 3 maps are significantly less annoying than HoT maps. Enemies are more spread out, so it is easier to avoid unnecessary fights, and nothing hits for the same amount of damage that bristlebacks/smokescales/Coztic warriors do. Navigition is much easier as well, and they finally stopped linking everything to a meta event, so you can just explore and join whatever it is you want to do.
Having said that, is it exactly easier (especially the instanced quests)? Maybe (I would certainly say so), but not necessarily, depending on your profession, build, and goals. You probably already know this, but, just in case you don’t, necromancer/reaper is a really good choice for playing solo, if you’re having trouble.

Didn’t notice any significant performance improvements, and there are no new skills, though.

Extremely important. If I don’t care about the lore, story, and characters, I ultimately can’t care about the game itself, no matter how fun the gameplay is.

Best profession for exploration and solo

Chronomancer is actually pretty great at killing mobs, in my experience. They can also move reasonably fast without spending utility slots on sigils and survive/win most fights solo. Of course, base Mesmer has far less DPS. Still, the portal is invaluable for exploration and jumping puzzles.

"Into the Labyrinth" NPCs bugged

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Hashar.6082

Hashar.6082

Hey guys, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad, still no acknowledgement from ArenaNet that this bug exists . . . BUT . . . the good news is that, totally by accident, I discovered a really easy way to kill the Mordrem Predator. Its almost unbelievable really, and it came about by the latest ArenaNet Customer Service Officer dealing with the support ticket I submitted on this bug a week or so ago asking me for some screenshots of the NPCs acting like zombies. I decided to go one better and make a video of my attempt at the chapter during one of my daily bug reports, and made one of the whole thing including finding the NPCs in the labyrinth (https://youtu.be/fm8ZMMlp6yI).

Then the most bizarre thing happened . . . after I had got to the second restart after dying twice in the end battle (to show how the Predator returned to full health every time I died and restarted), I stopped the video, saved it, and then started to watch it to make sure the recording software had worked. I am not sure how long I watched it for, between 5 and 10 minutes maybe, but you can imagine my surprise and confusion when I closed the video screen and returned to the game, only to find the battle over and the Predator dead. This had basically occurred while I had been AFK, from the game screen anyway, so I had no idea what had happened. All I had to go on, in attempting to reproduce it so I could share it with you guys, was the position I had left my character in at the very end of the video.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was able to reproduce, and record on video, this discovery after several hours and many fails, and so have also uploaded that video too (https://youtu.be/2K-fLeIlANA). In it I defeat him in about 5 minutes suffering zero damage. It would have been quicker if I had used more of my skills from the beginning, but I started out wanting to show it could be done AFK using the auto attack skill only. About halfway through I decided to speed it up.

I hope this helps some or all of you get past this blockage, and thanks to everyone for supporting the reporting of this bug in this thread even though ArenaNet, after a month and many players posting confirmation of the bug, either didnt bother to read them, or, if they did, didnt bother to post an acknowledgement that the bug exists, and what they planned to do about it, on this thread.

Huge thanks for the tip.
Just some clarification on how it (apparently) works, in case anyone needs it: the NPCs block all damage from the Predator itself, but you can still be hit by the rock blasts. However, the rocks always erupt at the same location, so if you move away from it and keep yourself surrounded by the NPCs, you should be fine.

GW2 npc romance storyline

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hashar.6082

Hashar.6082

I do enjoy a good romantic story, but apart from GW2 doing a terrible job at storytelling anyway, most video games just cannot handle this properly, with the Witcher trilogy being one of the very few exceptions.

That’s interesting. I’ve always considered romance to be one of the series’s weakest and rather disgusting points. You know, the requisite and largely unavoidable legion of hot and powerful (optionally monster) girls, all willing and ready to sleep with the protagonist after you complete their respective quest chains. The first game even offered you cards for each such encounter which you could collect – I’m not sure how can you possibly trivialize romance any more than that.
At the same time, the single most meaningful romantic relationship in Geralt’s life, i.e. his relatioship with Yennefer, was barely hinted at until the third and last game, and then you could simply walk away from it.

Pact Commanders Race

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hashar.6082

Hashar.6082

I would disagree. In my opinion, the commander’s race which fits the story the most is, in fact, sylvari. From what I’ve seen, they (meaning sylvari PCs) have by far the highest amount of unique dialogue options, reflecting both their inner conflict and their external confrontations with those who would not trust them any longer. Besides, a sylvari commander is basically the only person in Tyria capable of convincing others that his/her race does not consist entirely of Mordremoth’s allies and can, in fact, still be trusted.

Besides, the commander’s guild (DE 2.0) includes NPC members of every race but sylvari. The original DE represented all five dominant races of Tyria; it would make sense for the new guild to include members of all five races, too.

That, and Mordremoth was voiced specifically to be heard by sylvari PCs.

Charr homosexuality?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hashar.6082

Hashar.6082

If Charr evolved from a species that doesn’t mate for life or for pleasure, then the concept of homosexual – or even heterosexual – relationships would be alien to them.

The thing is, all higher animals do have sex for pleasure. In fact, that’s the primary (and basically the only) reason non-human mammals pursue it, being incapable of following some purely rational ideological goal of expanding their population. A mammalian species whose members receive no immediate personal reward for having sex would most likely die out, since the animals composing it would not spend time and energy to commit an entirely unrewarding act, possibly endangering themselves in the process (many animals are killed while performing mating rituals).

I’m all for designing species with non-human physiology and thought processes, but the charr already have way too many similarities to humans and other higher mammals to possess intrinsically alien qualities. And sexual reproduction which somehow occurs without sex drive is intrinsically alien.

Dialogue improvement

Hashar.6082

Maybe it’s just that I haven’t played or even heard of those games, but the bare text you linked seems plenty corny. Perhaps it comes out better in context with voice acting to give it inflection. You say the gameplay wasn’t great — but I bet it provided the “feel” that made those quotes resonate for you.

It does, very much so. In fact, LoK has the best voice acting I’ve ever heard, and the dialogues’ style is extremely appropriate to the characters, who commit some pretty cynical and/or atrocious actions while discussing them in a very lofty manner.
Plus, you simply can’t appreciate quotes like my favorite “I would choose integrity” without context.

On the subject of gameplay, well, in my opinion it did its job really well when it comes to the actual soul reaving; to making the player see in-game humans and other living (or undead) beings as sources of vital energy which must be obtained, through their death and oblivion, if you’re to continue your quest. That, and every game makes you feel at least somewhat personally responsible for what happens during its plot, since it was technically you who did everything your character did. Both of these things are pretty important, of course, but no, the “resonance” you mentioned is not solely, or primarily, due to them. If LoK were a movie or a book, it would still remain, albeit in a slightly different form.

However, I don’t believe it is reasonable to expect the same level of quality and detail in dialogue when it comes to MMORPGs. First, it’s basically impossible to create a truly impactful story, and thus a truly impactful dialogue, in a world which cannot be irreversibly altered by your character’s actions and where every single step of the plot can be endlessly repeated by other players. Second, it is even more impossible to create a consistenlty meaningful (voiced) dialogue without a set playable character. Third, the majority of the players simply aren’t that interested in meaningful dialogues. They are here for gameplay, and an interesting personal story might be nice to have (or it may be completely ignored), but it’s not why they are playing the game. Thus, it is far more reasonable to spend time and money on something that would convince them to continue playing.

Skimpy Male Armors Requested

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hashar.6082

Tbh, I don’t find most female armor in this game “skimpy” (I guess there are few exceptions). Unrealistic and not particularly protective (then again, lightweight “armor” is basically just clothes by intent)? Sure, but not any more unrealistic than combat in general. Distastefully sexualized? Not at all. There is a certain and very important difference between showing the body’s natural beauty and emphasizing one’s sex characteristics. Are Na’vi from Avatar wearing skimpy clothes?

Male armor, generally speaking, is not any more realistic, albeit for different and less obvious reasons. It simply tends to hide the body’s shape in a pretty silly and diffident manner.

Graphic modifications: SweetFX, GemFX

Question is, how many people use them and how happy they are with their presets? I’ve been using GemFX for quite a while, but recently I began to notice that its darkened image and increased levels of bloom cause too much stress on my eyes (I tried some other presets, but they are either equally uncomfortable or simply provide no desired effects). Right now I’m playing without it and I’m honestly not sure if I miss it. Did you have better experience with graphic modifications for this game?

Agree with this nerf. Two IBs could clear any dungeon, why bring anything else?

Why? Because you want to have more fun.
And if you don’t, you may as well use a skill that allows you to clear the dungeon quickly and receive your rewards. I have sincerely no idea why would anyone dislike Ice Bow in PvE. Unless, of course, you really like to force others into playing their game the way you prefer to play it.

The expansion would still sell for $50 whether you choose to believe it or not. They do take a slight loss in potential revenues they would have made from selling the core game separately

So you actually do believe that any significant number of new players would have bought the core game and the expansion if they were priced separately and amounted to $75 total? Because I certainly don’t. Some would, sure. The majority is much more likely to wait for a sale or skip the game entirely.

The expansion was going to cost $50 regardless as to whether the expansion was included or not.

Thing is, they would never sell it to the new players if that was indeed the cost of the expansion alone, core game not included.
So no, it was not going to cost $50 regardless of whether the original GW2 was included or not. Bundling them together is the only possible way to do so, and it is also the only possible way to get $50 from a veteran who does not wish to buy the ultimate edition.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate ANet, nor do I hate the game – in fact, it’s still one of my favorites. However, I don’t love it blindly (and I firmly believe that blind love is a corruption of the feeling itself). Which is why it saddens me that I’m, apparently, being indeed “taken for granted.”

Hashar.6082

Up until now I used to play GW2 with near-maxed graphics and had 63 FPS on average with the FPS limiter enabled. Without the limiter, it could go much higher. Today, for no apparent reason, it went down to 3-10 FPS and stayed there even after I changed the settings to the lowest possible quality/max performance. Of course, it makes the game completely unplayable.
What may be the cause of it?

And Hashar, sylvari were confirmed to have the “fun parts” by the devs. Not reproducing doesn’t mean they can’t have bits, it just means nothing comes of it. They reflect humans externally, right down to having certain protrusions and certain holes.

Fun parts != gametes, though.
Not trying to argue (well, I guess to a certain degree I am trying to argue), just explaining my point of view. :/

Sylvari do have sex, they just can’t have babies. They have sex and fall in love and the rest of the schmoozing.

Having a sex (of course I’m talking about physiological characteristics, not a sexual intercourse – it may get slightly confusing, considering that I don’t know English well enough) means having gametes. If sylvari had them, they would be able to reproduce. However, they do not, and thus they are asexual creatures. Their masculine or feminine appearance is just that – appearance, a way to mimic human physiology (and, to a certain degree, human psychology). It may not prevent them from falling in love, as they are able to experience many emotions normally developed through evolution, but it doesn’t make them men or women.
Which is a good thing, by the way.

Also, sylvari technically have no sex at all, so it’s a bit problematic for them to be in either a homosexual or a heterosexual relationship.
Speaking of which, it is also impossible for them to have children, which makes absolutely all kinds of romantic involvement equally “unnatural,” if that’s how you prefer to categorize love with no intent of reproduction.

Are necromancers biologically dead?

in Lore

Posted by: Hashar.6082

Hashar.6082

They have that appearance in GW1 because Anet was more profession thematic in appearance options in GW1 than in GW2.

Of course, but is this appearance purely aesthetical, or does it actually represent something about the PC’s physiology? Other professions are also unique in their style, but never to the point of not looking human.
Also, if necromancers were corrupted by their magic against their own will, wouldn’t all of them have the same issue regardless of their race and age?
I’m not saying that all of them are undead, but is it possible that some of them are (not counting liches and mummies)?

Are necromancers biologically dead?

Hashar.6082

I do realize that this question was probably already discussed at some point in time; I’m sorry if I’m asking something extremely obvious or simply well-known. Yesterday, however, I bought and played GW1 for the first time and was immediately intrigued by necromancers’ appearance. Some of them don’t really look human (the ones that have slit pupils, for example), and many of them, especially the Nightfall ones, seem to be quite noticeably dead. Or, rather, undead. On the other hand, the necromancers in GW2 look perfectly alive and healthy.
My question is, are they actually alive or undead? Or are they simply two different entities/professions, the first ones being undead followers of Grenth and the second ones being living people using death magic?
