Yeah thanks…I will try trading signets and see the impact on the DPS…
Hi,
Since the current SPVP Meta is boring as hell to play; I’ve recently resolved myself to play builds I could actually have some fun playing; although they might not always be the top builds for its specific class.
I love big numbers; the high risk / reward type of build and I came across the GS and Rifle warrior build. I although didn’t want to be all glass cannon and traded some numbers for some survivability and found myself to enjoy SPVP again with the below build. Please feel free to comment and make your suggestions as I would love to hear some feedback!
I’m able to deal with conditions, still hit like a truck and pick what kind of encounter I want…attack from a distance…or jump in the fight (Pop Endure pain) and wack away…
The GS also gives me great mobility to travel map or flee as required…

Nerfed.
The bird meta is dead.
Agreed, remove spectate mode in hotjoin and allow it in rank play only where it cannot be used any other way than what was intended to begin with: Watch other’s play and learn.
Case closed.
Amen to the bird nerf!
Can’t wait to see what the next broken pvp game mechanic abuse is going to be!
They should remove Skyhammer from rank play and that would solve the afking on that map.
I think playing that map is actually worst than having an afker on your team.
Ok you play your ai build and I get to pick any build I want and let’s see who wins =)
How about we both try a non AI build?
AI builds rule the PvP scene. Pick any build that can spawn some type of adds and just grab a drink, close your eyes, sit back and win. If that isn’t enough, pick a rune set that can spawn a bird that has a lot of HP and DPS just to make sure you really don’t have to hit any keys to win.
Here is what I am currently running with… Perma fury is thanks to the rune.

Why not use Executionner instead of hidden killer?
I mainly only SPvP now and I did the same…Thief is just in a bad spot in this meta compared to warrior. I don’t care what people say; I’d rather be in the fight than running away from it.
It’s sad because it’s the only class I played for over a year…but I can’t seem to have fun playing it anymore.
Warrior just does it better period.
Or put in a ready button that works, that’s also an option.
Easily eliminate all 4v5s because of Accidental AFKs in soloque.
Those who don’t ready up get Dishonor.
I agree…there are too many 4vs5 that occur from the start of the match and that is easily corrected but forcing players to hit the ready button before a match. If they don’t they are removed and match doesn’t start until it is even.
There isn’t much you can do as far as players disconnecting during a match so at least prevent those that happen out of the gate…
Take your thief in SPvP and learn to play him there. It’s closed quarters, really hard to survive until you learn to know there other classes and sharpen your reflexes. Dying there makes it a lot easier to rejoin the fight.
From there WvW will get easier on you…be patient…some have been at it a long longer than you have…
Because nothing is being done.
I mean PvP isn’t a cluster %$#@ enough with the minions, the clones, the pets, the birds, the turrets…
Can we get more AI passive PvP and less active play?
So much fun! Just a suggestion for your next balance patch of 2017!
Hi,
First off, let me just start by saying that the mesmer class is not at its best spot right now in PvP. If you enjoy the class and don’t mind having it tough I’d say stick it through and suffer; else try and play some class better suited for the type of meta and game type we have now. These are the classes you struggle against who have much more going for them at the moment. Stuns unfortunately shouldn’t stack but they do…so we all at some point get chained stunned to death.
It is indeed easy to tag the mesmer in order to avoid targetting the clones; although most experienced PvP players don’t have to anymore as they are pretty easy to spot once you get the hang of it.
Ask your teams for the stategy before a games start…if no one speaks then when the game starts wait and see if someone goes for the home point…if yes then proceed and follow the rest of your team at mid…you are much better off helping other teams members capping a point as your clones will add some confusion and clutter…
As for people leaving…its been an issue for a very long time now…get used to it as it sure looks as its there to stay.
I used to play a thief…then I started to run into the same issues you have now…so I switched to guardian, warrior and ele and I’m having a lot more fun…classes aren’t balanced in PvP so either you chose a class that outperforms others or you just suck it up and enjoy being stomped all day.
Is it some sort of punishment from the devs?
Anything but SKYHAMMER.
Makes all other maps look like heaven pvp maps.
Has been brought up a lot of times, ANet doesn’t want it for some reason.
Why add something that makes total sense? Much better to let the player base get frustrated!
Im pretty sure when you can see your team has kittened players and you have no chance this is the reason they leave or stop playing.
I see nothing wrong with this, why would you want to play a 15 minute game you know your going to lose anyway cause of bad players its just a waste of time and effort to even try, might as well do something else.
That’s exactly what Hot Join is for. Solo and Team Q should be for players willing to stick it to the end only…
I agree we shouldn’t allow players to leave SoloQ…or at least heavily penalize them for doing so…but that would penalize many players who get disconnected from the game without their doing…
Kind of hard to manage…but again if you play on a shady Internet connection stick to Hot Join…
If you’re talking about SoloQ; lots of people, such as myself get in Hot Join while queing…then when match pops up…well we have about a minute to join…so we leave…
Ain’t much you can do about that else preventing people queued in a match to get in Hot Join which is kind of absurd as Hot Join serves a different purpose IMO…try builds, test and try new professions…it souldn’t be a plce where you expect a fair and strategically played match…
how about the other classes that can spam red circles everywhere? should we limit their numbers of AOE to even things up?
Hi,
Thanks for the build; I was playing a similar type build but with the Valk Amulet and I must say the change is quite noticeable…My eviscerates do a bit less damage, but the condi pressure easily makes up for it…
I load signet of might for added damage, as I find that the Berserker stance and Dolyak signets are plenty as far as defensive utilities…
Yes, I believe you get access to a special version of some legendaries. For one they cost half the gold, and you can turn them into a walking cane when you feel the need to take a break!
Warriors are EZ mode in PVP ; anyone who has tried both classes or any other class for that matter can attest to that.
Tell the devs give thieves builds that can actually do something else than stealth and evade to survive and you will start seeing less and less of the stealth and evade abuse.
Even with those, anyone who knows how to PVP can easily kill a thief…if you’re build to spam evades you hit like a wet fart…can’t believe comments like that still flowing on forums especially from a warrior!!!
Couldn’t agree more. It’s now a game of bunker builds dumping AOE’s on points or conditions and hope to outlast opponents. Reall dull.
But again if they would mix and match game modes / objectives; maybe bunkering wouldn’t wouldn’t be of such importance…
I think their strategy is to have some very bad weapon sets so that the others look that much better…
It’s a fun weapon set indeed…I would definitely put energy sigils in order to get as many dodges as possible as stealth is non existent with P/P…the rest would go into getting as much damage as possible…
All is vain.
We had planned to take the little Sylvaris to Lion’s Arch for a week to visit during their break from school from the 17th until the 21st. Tickets were very expensive, as we are flying in from the Cursed Shores, and we are getting routed through Iron Marches since no direct flights were available.
Now we have heard about a siege taking place in Lion’s Arch that week and they will not refund out tickets!!! We have to fly that week else we will lose our gems.
Any ideas as to where else to go visit?
That’s most likely as mentioned above, Hotjoins…meant for testing builds or just play to kill, not to win…
Play to Win is solo or team Q…although Solo Q will sometimes leave you wondering :-)
Hi, I Run a SS/B spec, best way is with the BOW burst skill and #3 combo…then focus on Necro, pressure him, then AOE combo again with bow…you’ll be amazed how fast they fall once the minions are down…stay out of the red circles, that helps also :-)
Depends what you like to play best…WVW roaming?…play a thief…WVW zerging?…a ranger.
In SPVP, I’d go for the thief over the ranger although both classes have been funnelled to very little build diversity in order to be able to be successful…
You can obviously haven’t played SPVP with a thief…why don’t you try it and then come complain thieves are OP…
Bump Bump!
Best post needs to be on first page!
I agree, I got into SPVP a lot more lately, and the matchup system is horrible for one, and we are forced into some builds else we are a nuisance to our team.
I mean how hard can it be to prevent a match from starting if its uneven numbers?
You should have put a disclaimer under that bad photoshop edit for the slower people out there. :-)
I got a good laugh out of it!
+1
Thieves have never been any good at PVE compared to other classes. You wanna PVE play something else. It’s sad but it is what it is…
Haters hate.
Speak of it in good, speak of it in bad, but speak of it!
@ OP : Best post ever!
I’ll give you 2 weeks before you go back on most of what you said.
Any particular reason?
I’m not saying the game is perfect, but it’s certainly not the mess a lot of people (even regulars on these forums I notice) seem to think it is. It’s another way for an mmo to operate, and based on everything else I’ve tried, it’s the most feature packed an intricate I’ve seen.
Don’t listen to the haters, the forum is filled with them yet they still log on the game or at last the forums…people love to complain when they have nothing better to do.
Great post, you are right the game is great, nice to read something positive for a change. Enjoy!
Boon stripping, evades, daze, hit many targets at once with auto-attack…it’s a great set if played well.
The word META can mean many things… As you can see from these many definitions…I agree people use it as they see fit…although IMO it seems most of the time people make reference to the “easiest” way to win, therfore kind of “abusing” game mechanics to create builds that can easily win fights…or dominate…
I run something like this…S/D instead of S/P…
Tons of evades and lots of initiative, might stacking…fun to play. SB is a powerful weapon is SPVP.

30 in CS is a waste IMO in TPVP…you get more out of putting pts in the acrobatics line…compensate with gear and runes and you wont miss the crit chance and dmg loss much…and you will be much better at tsaying alive and slippery…you want to max out your boon efficiency you get from the trickery line and initiative management is key…
Better overall for you and your team…
Don’t listen to this guy, Dee Jay hit on the the two main builds, those should be your starting point. I disagree that s/d is easier though, it is very easy and effective to burst people from out of sight/range using d/p before they can do anything. In general the burstier builds are easier because fights should end quicker and you don’t have to worry about accruing value slowly for a long time.
Both builds have quirks/techniques that are probably better to be shown than explained… Just drop in a 1v1 server I’m sure some1 will help you.
Edit: sword pistol is fine, even excellent in some situations, but it just feels awful when somebody has a build that countered it (stability, blind, block, daze or stun when hit, protection when disabled…. Etc etc)
^ I’ll second this. 30 in CS is the cornerstone of the best tPvP builds.
And yea, S/D tends to get a reputation for being easy since many people don’t understand the build and just see tons of evasions, but to play the build well, you really need a good understanding of evade frames and initiative/endurance management.
Also, yes, S/P is fine, but beware Retaliation! That boon is brutal against pistol whip.
I’ve played with 30 pts in the CS line since launch until recently and you should try it, you will see that in a tPVP match you can do much better for you and your team without…it’s a different playstyle that’s all.
30 pts in CS isn’t by any means necessary…
So what you need to watch a complete video (Full match) of people playing thief in SPVP?
There is a functionality that offers you to spectate and follow a player around in a PVP match.
Why don’t you try it?
Nope. Thief is fine as is.
Leave the Thief alone and practice to counter instead. All classes/builds have classes/builds they struggle more against than others…People struggle against a particular build or class then go and call for a nerf…
There are plenty of counters to the SB evade spammers even as a thief playing against it…and a lot of other things that should be looked at in terms of balance before this…
1: What mode do you prefer
PVP : SPVP and WVW
2: How long have you been a thieve?
(beta, presale, launch , last year, this year. [hours if you want])
Since launch
3: Compared to when you started, how long can you stay logged on to your thieve?
(shorter periods , longer periods, about the same)
Shorter periods. When I get frustrated about the condition spamming tanks I face I log on to my warrior for easy kills/wins.
4: If you started a thieve now, would it be as much fun as launch?
No, since the PVP has Evolved to condition bunkers, would be frustrating as hell to learn PVP as a thief.
5 : Do you Agree with direction of the balance team?
try to be as direct about why if possible
Yes, mostly. It’s a good thing I don’t PVE though because from what I’ve heard in-game, thieves are completly left behind in regards to PVE in groups.

PVE? PVP? It dépends where you intend to take your thief to fight!
If PVP…WVW or SPVP?
