learning thief, is this build still viable?

in Thief

Jakkson.4076

Hi,

Are you intending to use this build in SPVP? Although they have nerfed the ability to perma stealth from the black powder and heart seeker combo, it is still a viable build, although for SPVP there are currently much better builds out there at the moment IMO if you want to help your team win some matches efficiently.

The need for 30 points in the SA line is a lot less important in SPVP then in WVW…PM me if you want for the build I use in SPVP currently which does quite well in tournament matches and is very challenging/fun to play…

Enjoy.

Hi,

For WvW, I would forget S/P…it got over nerfed and it is sub par compared to what you can get out of S/D and D/D…

I agree with stinky…0/30/30/10/0 is probably the best in terms of survivability and damage…sigils of fire, accuracy, battle…anything that boosts your DPS…Full set of P/V/T armor (orr karma vendors ans one invader piece) with Ruby orbs…accessories are berserker everything (Ascended offensive and if defensive get some vitality). Ruby orbs are cheap and you can’t get much better in terms of DPS for a thief.

That should bring you without food buffs close to 50% crit chance, over 90% crit damage (over 3100 attk ans over 16k HP) and plenty of survivability to handle most outnumbered fights.

Have fun :-)

Hi,

I know it’s been discussed over and over but are there any ACTUAL plans by the dev. team to address the horrible WvW ranking system?

Playing the same servers over and over and over especially when it’s a no contest every week is a good reason enough to get bored and look for something else to play.

Done matter if they keep bringing content in WvW, the ranking system is broken and it’s pushing people away.

Suggestion : Pay to retain dailies

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

Jakkson,

while I don’t agree with your post I could see how it would work. You could pay a certain amount each month to have only the dailies you missed during the month come up for you to be able to complete them. This would allow a person to have the same amount or laruals as everyone else and no one could Pay to win.

The reason why I don’t like this is the fact I found the time to play and used it to complete a daily. Also this would make the population go down. Some people would decide, hey I can just buy to get these later and just decide not to play. Not saying this is you but there are people out there like that.

But the idea itself isn’t bad, I just think it wouldn’t be good for the game as a whole.

I agree with what you say…it could lead people to play less hence affect population…but IMO a game that “forces” players to logon every day is not going to make it long term with the casual gamer I’m speaking of…

Jakkson.4076

For those of us casual gamers that can’t log on every day to complete dailies or have enough playing time to complete monthlies…would be nice to be able to pay a fee and get them back in bundles so when we have time to play we can complete them and receive our rewards.

Before you kids start complaining and argue that they take very little time to complete; some of us live very busy lives but have the pockets deep enough to afford this and not fall behind too much in order to remain competitive on the high end side of things ;-)

We could therefore move from a scenario where we “have to log on everyday” to one where “we can log on and get this done when we have time”.

An besides, ANET needs to keep making money so they can maintain you hardcore gamers happy with new content…I’d be happy to contribute by helping finance your updates this way!

Just a suggestion! Thanks!

Finally Understand who GW2 Demographic is!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

I’ve finally realised why I can’t enjoy or begin to enjoy this game even though it’s amazing and is in my favorite genre.

I’m not the demographic at which they are aiming for.

With the “Super Box Adventure” commercial I realised GW2 is made for the 35 year old gamers, or gamers generally older than me in their late 20s to 30s, who love this nostalgic feeling of 8bit games and bad american commercials. I didn’t grow up with this so to me it’s just not something I can relate to on any level.

With no time constrains and content available to anyone at any skill level, they are aiming this game at ppl who have a wife and possibly kids, gamers who don’t have that much time in the day to actually play games in general, in another term casual players who don’t have all the hours in the day to play. That isn’t me i’m not a casual gamer, I have hours for college work (not uni), and games. I’m not constrain by casual hours.

I’m not looking for an arcade game or an adventure game to play, a 8 bit platformer or a platformer in general. I’m looking to play an mmorpg. Mini games are fun but when the bulk of my fun from the game is coming from mini games, i might aswell be playing a real adventure, platformer or arcade game than a water downed version of such in an MMORPG.

Pretty easy to figure out. Free To Play MMO requires revenues other than box sales to stay afloat…teens and youger adults aren’t the ones with the pockets deep enough to keep buying stuff to remain competitive. Older folks also lack the time younger people have to be able to get it freely in game.

So of course they are going to try to appeal to the older, more resourceful ($) gamers!!!

I’m thinking more and more about getting back the old Berserker suit out and respec to a full glass cannon build since this recent nerf to stealth and bug to hidden killer. I’m sure a lot of us are thinking the same and rely on mug and huge backstab crits to kill as fast as possible. Since we didn’t have any staying power to start with and we have even less now.

Now question is: how long do you think it will take before forums become flooded again with QQ about how thieves can insta kill people and so on and so forth?

I predict a nerf to mug and then backstab damage next! All people have to do to see it happening is QQ about it on the forums!

Should unpopular events give bonuses?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

People go for the easiest loot, period. So if you put more loot somewhere that’s better it will not longer be an unpopular event. This is what happened with the big world events. People didn’t camp them that much until they were guaranteed a gold. Suddenly there’s lag, there’s overflow servers, there’s all sorts of stuff.

If you buff the rewards on everything few people are doing, you’ll throw the entire economy out of whack with inflation. If you change where the big rewards are, people will just start doing the new stuff.

I agree with the OP in principle, but unfortunately human nature makes this very hard.

I have to somewhat disagree…giving better reasons for people to farm a wider array of events will spread them out hence reduce traffic in zones that are currently over populated…with the use of timers and if timed right; people will have to choose their events…would make it fun for us event farmers who always have to farm the same events over and over…

Question about P/V/T Set for WvW

in Guardian

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

Hi,,

My main is a thief, and I’m a WvW addict…I run a P/V/T set with berserker jewels, weapons and accessories and I’m loving the set for 1vs. many encounters when I roam…

My guardian is now 80, I’ve got the Karma for the P/V/T exotic armor and was wondering if that set is also good for guardians, or if it is overkill…

I want agood balance between damage and staying power, I’m currently running full Knight exotic with beryl orbs, valk weapons, and a mix of accessories (knight and berserker) which traited runs me at about 2.7K armor…between 35% and 50% crit chance depending on weapon/set, 82% crit damage and roughly 17k health. I feel a bit squishy at times as I noticed that there ain’t much escaping a 1vs. many fight with a Guardian. It’s fight until death mostly…so I’m starting to think that its probably worth investing more in staying power…and roll with my thief of a warrior if I want damage…maybe guardian wasn’t built for this type of playstyle…

So for you PRO guardians out there; is the P/V/T armor worth it?

So…. is AR taking a break this week?

I can’t speak for the whole server, obviously, but a large portion of ALS is taking it easy this week.

It’s given me a chance to be a fashionista and level up an alt a bit, so I won’t complain.

I can’t bring myself to believe ALS is the reason AR is taking a hit, no way their carrying anyone.

You should believe it. I’m in no way disrespecting the other guilds and folks that come out to score points for AR, but ALS is a major portion of AR’s WvW force. I’ve heard a few of our good commanders outside of ALS talking about stepping down or moving servers. So with ALS taking a break and some of our other commanders as well, I wonder if this weeks performance might be indicative of AR in the future weeks. I hope not.

On the upside, the outmanned buff has scored me some good loot though.

Nah we just need to let the other servers think they can win so they don’t get discouraged and quit…besides…we like their company…so much drama…keeps it interesting doesn’t it?

P/V/T thief

in Thief

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

Hi…I’m assumuing your speaking for WvW…so this is what my advice is good for as I don’t PvE much…

I started the opposite…full berserker with knight and valk pieces to balance it out…then I kept reading about P/V/T gear so I farmed for it and started trying it out…so far not impressed…yes the staying power is there…but you hit for considerably less damage…

I agree with the above post…learn to dodge and trait appropriately (Trait SA for example and go for Feline Grace and dodge your life away) and the gear becomes a lot less important as to what you SHOULD have and what you WANT to have…meaning…if you like to dish out damage, and want fights to end quickly…

But don’t neglect toughness…its underrrated IMO…and anything below 15K HP is asking for trouble…so mix it up there are tons of posts on the subject…P/V/T gear with Ruby orbs, Berserker gear with valk weapons and emerald orbs…orbs are cheap and can achieve a lot on stats when wanting to try out certain stats to see if they fit your playstyle…one thing you should never play with are your jewels…those should always be berserker all the way…

Go read this guy’s post on the subject…good, sound information on there…

S/D build issue

in Thief

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

Hey,

I feel your pain as I have been playing with the S/D build for the past month…I’ve tried 20/30/0/20/0 build or derivatives of it…and you can kill much faster but you’re also killed a lot faster…also tried the 0/25/30/15/0 or derivatives of it…definitely more survivability but you dont hit nearly as hard…I run all berserker exotic gear with divinity runes…expensive set of runes but worth it…and too expensive to replace…so I’m sticking with them…I’ve tried with Valk weapons, Berserker weapons, mix of berserker accessories, knight or valk…i’ve tried so many different combinations I think I have all weapon and accessory types in my bank now…yes the para sigil is required for S/D as it brings your daze to close to 3 seconds…rest of sigils are air…or anything that adds burst

What I’m finding is that you have to go with what fits your playstyle and the type of situation you’re in…sounds cliche…but also don’t underestimate toughness…I ran builds with 14.5k hp with roughly 1500 toughness and builds with 18.5k hp and around 900 toughness and the 18.5k would melt down so much faster than the 14.5k would…I also noticed that 30 points in SA gives a huge boost when you’re not mastering your thief 100% yet…I’d say its a must until you become a pro at countering every type of situation…else it will make the learning curve much longer as you will die way too much for the amount of playtime you get…my next shot is to try a full P/V/T set…and spec the rest into burst dmg…

I’m currently playing with a S/D, P/P glass semi glass cannon build (20/30/0/20/0) and I must admit it takes a whole lot more skill to be successful…without points in SA my heals are lower and getting away takes better reflexes and skill…I’m learning to dodge…as Acrobatics can be deadly because of feline grace…dodging is as good as healing…but it’s harder to master…takes time and patience…I also keep D/D set in my bag…as when I get frustrated enough with the P/P, I switch and calm myself down a little as it seems much easier to down people with a D/D set…but I like P/P better… :-)

I used to run the 0/25/30/15/0…with D/D as my support set and I had a lot of success with it…I could survive better…have more fun with playing against zergs or larger groups…In any case I use S/B only when zerging….

So to me the best case scenario in WvW seems to be a balanced build…around 3k attack…45% crit chance with over 85% crit dmg…over 15k HP and a decent amount of toughness…but I still havent figured out if I wanna do that…the glass cannon approach is so appealing!

Anyways have fun with it and be patient…takes practice…to me 50% of the fun is trying out the different possibilities…

Building a WvW Thief

in Thief

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

Hi!

I’m not the best expert there is but here is what I figured out so far:

If I were you I wouldn’t even dare building a WvW thief without 30 points invested in SA…if you want survivability it’s a must…it will allow you to heal, gain initiative and remove conditions while you stealth…and if you want to roam, even zerg, you will find those traits indispensable…

After that at least 25 points in critical strikes…then either go deadly arts for mug or 15 in acrobatics for feline grace…I’m a big fan of feline grace as it gives you a huge amount of dodging which is key as a pvp thief…

You want to aim for P/V/T gear (karma or badges gear) the runes will depend of how you spec (condition or burst) and accessories the same…but usually with P/V/T gear you want to head towards berserker accessories…it also depends of how deep your pockets are…ruby orbs usually are cheap and effective though…

For weapon sets well that’s all whole other ball game…but if you don’t want to be a one trick poney…then condition P/D thief is out of the question…look into D/D SB or S/D and D/D…

Let me know if that helped…good luck!

D/D in WvW .. how do you put up with it? >_>

in Thief

Posted by: Jakkson.4076

Jakkson.4076

I also use S/D and D/D combo…I don’t think P/P is strong enough in WvW especially since most of the time as a roaming thief you will be fighting outnumbered…and using P/P you are just a sitting duck with a big red target on your back…

Try the S/D and use to teleport ability to your target…with a para sigil you can often get stuns so you quickly gain the edge…then switch to D/D and finish em off…S/D auto attack also hits multiple targets…

Remember though as a thief our strenghts lie in our ability to move in and out of combat…if you can’t go for the kill the first time regroup then rinse adn repeat…and now that the thief is the most talked about class in PvP…people have learned to counter…just takes more skill and patience… :-)

Hello there!I`m so confused, I can`t decide how to build my thief, because I`m disappointed in glass cannon, it`s not valuable for anything.I would like to change my build for more survivability, but also I don`t want to lose all my damage. Can you help me?
I have full exotic equipment with stats: power/precision/condition damage. Also I have runes of air in slots.

Hey…I ran into the same problems…depends if you want to go condition damage in order not to have to get new gear…if you want to keep condition damage and maintain decent survivability…got the p/d, sb route…invest 30pts in Shadow arts…and use bleeding duration sigils with air…and get some toughness and vitality in your accessories…spam 5…then 1…rinse and repeat…

I personally found that build to be boring so I went with a S/D, D/D build and switched gear for berserker (Divinity runes) with weapons and accessories that gave me some toughness and vitality…which gives me plenty of damage and survivability, and by far most fun i’ve had playing a thief…keep crit dmg high, crit chance around 50%…

PM me I’ll send you the exact build details if you want. Good luck.

People expect to run around like chicken without heads with a lever 30 toon in WvW and expect to kill anyone easy mode and as soon as a player or a class actually knows what they are doing and kills them they cry out and QQ about it everywhere.

Get real people…get off the tief OP QQing bandwagon and go take time to actually learn to play the game!

Best advice…go in the SPvP and play around with the different skills and traits. Read up on forums and look at playstyle videos…find what thief is the one that will fit your playstyle most!

Best way to learn…don’t be afraid to die and try things out.

Have fun!

Hi…I tried the condition builds and found them to be boring…if you like burst and want survivability, look into a S/D build…and don’t invest less than 30 in the Shadow Arts its a must nowadays…I’d personally invest 25 to 30 in Critical Strikes…depending if you want to go for the Executionner trait or not…if you like damage I’d say yes…if you don’t then you can go 15 in Acrobatics the Feline Grace trait…which gives you a lot of dodging…combine to a might on dodge trait this can increase your damage output…

Get some armor / equipment with toughness and vitality…don’t stack everything in power, crit or precision…

I’ve been playing around with a similar type build and I’m having a lot more fun, and success.

You will see a lot of P/D because it’s as stated above easiest to play and be successful…although I must agree take a look into S/D…tons of fun…a you get a chance to be different than the mainstream D/D and P/D builds…

I have been playing with S/D too for the past couple of days…I use S/D as my main set…and switch to D/D or SB for secondary depending on situation…and I’m having a lot more fun then with the boring yet very potent P/D condition builds…

I find myself requiring very little initiative…which in turns allows for great deal of flexibility with traits…

You get a decent amount of burst, survivability and mobility…and have moves to counter and beat any type of class…and it’s not only about pushing the same keys over and over…you actually get to be creative and adjust/adapt to whatever situation you’re facing…

By far the most fun I’ve hads with the thief class…
