Hello!
I have been playing Guild Wars since the original games, and I have been collecting the boxes and soundtracks ever since.
I’m sure hope there will be a boxed version of PoF, however I have not seen anything confirming/denying this.
The main question is:
Is there/will there be a way to pre-purchase a retail/box copy of PoF in order to attain the in-game pre-purchase awards, and will it be just the basic expansion, or is there/will there be a standard/deluxe/ultimate edition?
Thanks.
So, I am doing a GW based d&d campaign. If we go by the 3 day rule of getting to Ascalon from Ebonhawk, taking a straight line, making a reasonable pace (d&d states a normal pace is 3 miles/hour or 24 miles per day over 8 hours of travelling and 2 hrs of rest throughout, which is also the average human walking pace per mile), assuming the travel for 10 hours and take the other 14 hours to make camp, cook, and sleep each night, you are looking at about 72 miles for a full 3 days. However, since they arrived on the last night, this suggests you have to subtract approximately 10 hours of night (assuming summer, and going by the Tyrian calendar which says a year still has 365 days with 4 seasons), which means it is 62 miles.
I then placed the official Tyrian map (so no scaling) on a grid, which shows 444 miles x 504 miles = 223776 square miles. This is more than twice the size of the UK. More than Twice the size of New Zealand. Smaller than Australia’s New South Wales, but roughly 60% bigger than Montana, about 19 times the size of Belgium. Almost the same size as Madagascar. Average COUNTRY size is only 282 square miles.
Now, that’s quite a large chunk for medieval times, especially when we consider Tyria’s population density. We don’t have much to go off of, but saying the LA is the largest/a larger city, if we just say every capital/major city has 40k people, hoping that the excess for smaller cities adds up to the amount of people in small villages around the map.
Ebonhawk, DR, BC, Grove, LA, RS, Hoelbrak = 280,000 people. that’s 0.8 square miles per person. That’s a LOT of space for one person. However, keep in mind this is not considering the skritt, centaurs, kodan, quaggan, and the other primitive races. It might be safer to say 2 square miles per person. That’s still a lot of area for the population.
Read: http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/blueroom/demog.htm for town and city population. Medieval London occupied 40k people, much like LA. It is important to note that Tyria’s population would be in a severely reduced state, war between various factions, and the threat of the elder dragons and such, along with the typical concepts of illness, even with magic.
Just an update, support helped me out and now its all fixed. It seems I had some background programs interfering with GW2 on startup.
Cheers for all the help guys/gals!
Yeah, so just via e-mail. All good. Wasn’t sure if there was a way to attach directly to support ticket. thanks.
Thanks for the link Abomally,
Unfortunately the install didn’t fix my problem.
Good news though, support has gotten back to me, but I need to attach files to the ticket. I can’t see anywhere where I can attach the files (unlike forums, it doesn’t have the option in preview view).
Any help on this aspect per chance?
Update: I have sent files in a reply e-mail. Not sure if this is general procedure, but I assume they’ve been sent.

So I’m currently using DirectX 12. When I try to reinstall I get the message in the attachment below. I can’t find it on my computer to uninstall then reinstall (maybe I’m just not looking properly.)
I used DXdiag and it came up with an error message, but it’s not showing up anymore when I access the tool.
Nope. No crashing on other games.
Thanks. I tried reinstalling via the links but it says I have a version already installed, even though when I go to add/remove programs (as it suggests) it’s not there. Any thoughts?
Contact support just now, hopefully it doesn’t take too long.
This?

I would, but it shows the account info, IP address, etc. along with the info. I’ve sent the reports to Anet though.
Don’t know enough about IT to know what info needs to be blurred out and such to post safely.
About a week ago my computer restarted during a story cut scene, since then whenever I try to login the client crashes (just before it gets to character selection screen). Upon crashing it gets an error message (see attachment).
I am able to access the game via using the repair command line, but that takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, provided that the repair doesn’t stop responding.
I’m able to log on normally on my laptop, and I reinstalled GW2 to my desktop from my laptop files, but the issue still persists.
I was just in Fields of Ruin today and talking to the gossiping miners around Blackwing Excavation and it appears as though these characters are completely oblivious with what’s been happening in Tyria. For instance, one thinks the ore he’s digging is to contribute to the sink-hole in Divinity’s Reach, which has been ‘fixed,’ and another thinks that Lion’s Arch is still a bustling city with everyday citizens (although, conveniently he seems to be building and says there’s work available for him, though this hasn’t changed since before LA’s destruction.)
Obviously Anet can’t cover all the content they’ve put into the game and all dialogue to see what has to be changed to make the world persistent with the current happenings of living story, as sometimes there is conflicting lore as well when new content is added when compared to lore from GW1. They’ve done brilliantly with changing some small dialogue text as it is though.
Has anyone else encountered similar instances of this? What are your opinions on Anet not being able to integrate the living story into the persistent world they’ve created completely? Do you think there should be a feature where players can inform devs where inconsistencies exist? It doesn’t seem like it would be too difficult to change text dialogue, but I’m not sure.
Coin’s Toss Guild is a small guild that was formed in the head-start access. With the April patch the guild has been re-rolling, removing inactive players to make way for some new (hopefully active) members. The current members are fun-loving and sociable, and are mostly casual players. We are looking to expand to increase the enjoyment of playing GW2 through the social aspect of gaming, and to allow members to find easy assistance and groups for dungeons, WvW and SPvP.
We are on the Isle of Janthir server, though we do have members from other servers in the guild. We are an English speaking guild. The Guild Emblem is an achromatic wolf with a blood-stained maw crowned with silver on a field of snow. Comment here or message me in-game for an invite, you don’t need to represent 100% and you don’t need to be very active. We welcome all friendly faces, be you charr, norn, asura, sylvari or human.

I’m the leader of my own guild, but it’s small, so I will have time to rep…probably.
Well the axe magically reappearing? Rangers use magic to conjure weapons and arrows infinitely from another dimension~
Now to be serious, axe is the rangers only main-hand ranged weapon. The general rule I use is one range weapon set one melee, I have and love using my greatsword. How I have my char traited to make use of a GS makes shortbow useless and longbow I typically just don’t like (skill wise, the 3rd is for escape, the 4th is a knockback, 5th is a slow aoe and 1 and 2 are the actual attacks, since I use GS you can assume I like to deal damage.) So what’s left? Only the axe. I can use dual axe (normally I do fore whirl combo) or torch (flame field) or even warhorn (mobility+blast+range damage).
I think what the designers wanted was to have a melee and a ranged mainhand+offhand set, and that’s what we got.
Legacy edition is an incentive for new players to join the game, well I tell them to keep their distance if the community wants to ‘rob’ these players of their bonuses. Because really, it’s not much of an incentive if everyone else gets it as well.
Also this has already benefited you, players who bought the DDE or otherwise, this incentive is to bring new players to the game, which you should want more than a flipping 20G worth of gem store items, add 30G to that if you really want the boosters.
Remember, these new players won’t have nay of the rewards or experiences from any of the living stories, maybe you should complain about that? They still get the raw end of the deal.
So choose one: New players coming into the world bringing fresh life to GW2 who won’t get to experience a lot of the content we already have, or a 500 gem armour skin, 1000 gems of experience boosters and a 1.6G bag ?
My choice: Give us the new players.
I could have sworn i saw an outhouse around somewhere, so I took a little walk around Queensdale, most likely place that would have one imo, but unfortunately nothing. Though I saw a few sights and found some interesting NPCs, the only things that I could find relating to toilets were 2 closed doors in the carny house at Beetletun. I’ve attached pictures, one’s a bit big for a toilet (L1), but the other has 2 doors – one of which is obstructed (L2), though it is very small and one door doesn’t have stairs, so maybe for shovelling waste away? So maybe they’re like a long-drop? Never thought I was going to type that today when I woke up…
The next closest thing I found, also attached, was a wash/dress room in the monastery(L3), since they’re monks they probably only sponge themselves and don’t have the luxaries of baths is my guess. Again, didn’t expect to be talking about monks bathing themselves. This, my fellow GW2 players, is what happens when games are compared to reality.

As for the gods’ location – what is known is that they are not on the world Tyria, nor in the Mists directly. This indicates that – if they even still exist – that they are on another world.
In the end, though possible, it is unlikely that the Lyssa priestesses (High and temple) are telling the truth. It would be a neat twist to see that the priestesses are telling the truth, imo, however on the flip side this means that Zhaitan was killed after absorbing a god’s power which is pretty much impossible because 1) too weak for being an Elder Dragon backed by a god’s power and 2) a god’s power cannot be destroyed and thus, when Zhaitan was killed, if he had a god’s power consumed then that power would have manifested and threaten to destroy everything like what happened when Abaddon was killed at the end of Nightfall – without a container, a god’s power goes rampant and effectively becomes a very powerful nuke.
Like the part about how gods can’t be killed only sealed away like Abaddon, however I’d like to ascertain that they do exist, whether it be as gods or powerful beings. All races admit their existence, there’s evidence of existence (Malchor in Malchor’s leap, his ghost and him seeing the gods and trying to sculpt driving him to insanity blah blah blah) and then the avatars in GW1…as in at the shrines. I like how you put in there that they could be on another world, as in the lore there is some suggestion that they brought humans to Tyria (the world) from somewhere else, thus the gods must also be able to travel to other worlds.
So in all, the fact that the world didn’t get obliterated by god-magic is proof that Lyssa wasn’t consumed by Zhaitan since we are forced to kill him in the story. Unless there is something like, he consumed Lyssa, but Lyssa was still alive and killing him the whole time which would reason as to why he was so weak.
Another possible outcome is that the priestess was telling the truth. Her truth of what she saw/experienced. Lyssa is the goddess of deception, it wouldn’t be too hard for her to trick a priestess and an elder dragon that the dragon in question had consumed her. Thus, the priestess is telling the truth of what she knows, but the truth is not the ultimate truth, as truth can be and is very abstract as it shifts based on perception. In fact, consumed Lyssa may not be meant in a literal stance, and may just mean her temple or her influence on Tyria.
Assassins and thieves seem pretty much the same. Add a mid-range physical damage weapon to guardian and you have a paragon, and ritualists and engineers also have strong similarities though one does things by magic the other by tech. Dervish could be a bit of guardian, though not much.
Dervishes can fit into a class just like paragons without damaging lore. I see a lot of comments made about the connection between dervishes and gods, but paragons lore-wise have a stronger connection.
From the gw wiki: “Paragons are touched by the gods, chosen by them to serve as emissaries among mortals. At some point in their lives, each Paragon has experienced an event in which he should have died but did not. Paragons ascribe their survival to the gods themselves, and dedicate their lives as the gods’ servants in the mortal world.”
In comparison, dervishes are ‘priest-warriors’ and thus are closer to monks in that they believe in gods but don’t have a divine or godly experience.
So lore wise, dervishes can be added to GW2 just as easily as the paragon and monk. By renaming it. Or having them devote themselves to something else.
Mechanic wise, all of them can be done, I’d love to see a profession mechanic in the future where it summons the rit spirits or applies different protection (dervish enchant) and such. Though, I don’t expect new classes, but rather new weapons with weapon skills to compensate. We will see.
Why are Ascalonians considered bad guys? They’re not. Some are, such as ghosts who’ve had their actions fuelled by their hate for the charr due to the foe fire, and separatists that refuse change (though they are not evil, they’re just a bit old-fashioned).
But most aren’t, as you can see by a few Ascalonian settlements around Kryta, namely the Ascalon Settlement in Gendarran Fields.
I’ve noticed it too, but make sure that they don’t have stability, not sure if it was a coincidence but whenever mine failed to interrupt the opponent had the buff.
It still does considerable damage though if your opponent is on their last leg, since we have a pet to help heal if it comes to a 1v1 downed battle.
Other than that, I’m not sure.
They did the same in GW1 if I recall, and also, I read the agreements, well some, most were just basics.
As said, you weren’t ‘banned’ precisely/just for inappropriate language, you were banned for causing distress/offending other players as well. The reason Anet takes this matter so seriously I assume is the same reason they had for doing so in GW1, both games are founded on the ideas of a strong community, and anything that harms any demographic of that community is severe.
My advice, as I know for some people habits are impossible to escape, is to join a guild that the members in which accept that language or try restricted your language around those who you’re not sure how they feel about the matter.
If your ban was truly lifted it could be for a number of reasons other than the reason they provided though by the sound of it there may have only been a few people who reported you. I doubt it would be anything to do with constitutional rights though, as the Internet is a world-wide construct (GW2 contributing to this) the ‘constitutional rights’ won’t affect many players in the world, thus creating loopholes, flaws and contradictions in multiple legal areas. Instead, their agreement can override that, as long as the agreement is lawful, which it would be as it would probably have went through some process to make sure.
I’d love to rename my guild, because the comic effect of the name at the time is gone since my friends don’t play any more.
Even though it is simple, I know from GW1 and other MMO’s that it has been requested many times but never made possible. However there is a simple solution: remake the guild
Problem is, since GW2 uses a sort of guild currency (influence), you’ll lose all your upgrades since you also need to delete the guild to make a new one. For example, my guild has spent over 30k influence, and that was gained over a year, it would be a pain/grind to get it all back. that by itself is 60G not counting all the stuff my guild has used in the meantime.
Racial skills are more so a ‘if in need of an alternative’ choice.
So for instance, on a ranger you have Entangle (bind and bleed aoe), rampage as one (buff yourself and grant might to your pet) and spirit of nature (passive heal when active and revive down players on spirit skill activation)
So, if you’re not going to fight big mobs, you generally wouldn’t use entangle, if you’re not traited for spirits than you wouldn’t normally find yourself using SoN either, so most of the time the ranger skill that is used is Rampage. However, if you’re in an area where your pet has a high risk of death, so boss fights or dungeons, then you probably wouldn’t use it as it only gives swiftness, stability and I think 1 stack of might to you. In these cases, you would bring one of the racial elites. For a human ranger normally it would be HoB. I’ve seen AoM used instead of spirits for support rangers in dungeons and it is possible to make it work, but the times on them are a bit bad currently. No clue when you would use RoG, maybe if your a PBAoE necro or ele so you still have access to skills? Probably better just to pop an elite afterwards though.
AoM gives boons like rampage, has a root, a heal, gives mass protection and area-wide condition removal. It doesn’t last long, the recharge is too long and the skills take too long to cast whilst locking out other skills. All it needs is faster cast times and longer duration and it may be a considerable elite.
It’s not horrible, certainly there are situations where it is very useful, but their are just too many disadvantages for regular use at the moment.
Rampage is only really good so if your traited for beast mastery, for the initial boons and pet burst damage when combined with the signets. Overall it’s an average and an ‘all situations’ elite, which makes it more viable than AoM, but that’s design.(This is a ranger only skill, just referring to it due to previous reply, just to show that it does not do ‘more’ than AoM.)
HoB is quite good for small mobs, not good for strong enemies or large mobs where they don’t have shared aggro with others, otherwise they die too fast to pull off their second leap for the massive burst of damage it owes its usefulness to.
RoG well…I don’t see why you would even use it unless you were a condition damage melee char that doesn’t inflict poison with their melee weapon. In which case most of the time they have other more useful skills anyway.
When talking about human racial elites we need to consider the elites of other races, not professions.
Here are my comparisons (Note: It is not a spoiler, it’s just to minimise a wall of text):
Sylvari:
Summon Druid – similar to AoM however it doesn’t lock any skills – 60 sec longer recharge but a 40 sec longer duration, which, depending on your situation, is generally better.
Sylvan Hound – Similar to HoB, but only one, is immune to all conditions, has a bit more health but deals less damage, or at least less burst damage (from own observations). However, it last twice as long and it has 60 seconds less recharge. So, sylvan might be a bit more useful, although it is only one and thus doesn’t have the shared aggro aspect as 2 HoBs.
Take root: Doesn’t lock skills and causes turrets to be summoned to attack at a steady pace. It has more aggro sharing than HoB, does less damage, but has more survivability. It has 90 seconds less on recharge but has a 3 second cast where you can’t move, however, you are also invulnerable. So I would say about the same. Since they aren’t mobile they may be worse as they also only have a 30 second duration.
Asuran:
Powersuit: In comparison with AoM, its skills are more offensive, activate quicker and it’s duration is considerably longer. It has a 60 second longer recharge, though the duration more than makes up for it as its skills also have short recharge. Have about the same utility, though powersuit can be used in more situations. Overall it is much more useful than AoM.
7 series golem: Longer cast time and duration than HoB, shorter recharge time. Does slightly less approximate damage (from observation not statistical). Overall it is about the same as HoB.
D series golem: Same times as 7 series, has more utility and is much more durable than HoB. Damage seems to do more damage than 7 series statistically, and may be better than HoB.
Charr:
Warband Support: Same times as HoB and same aggro share, the skill offers more utility than HoB but less offensive power. It has a lower skill point cost. About the same as HoB.
Artillery Barrage: Longer recharge and less duration than RoG, however it does considerably more damage and is target based aoe rather than PBAoE. Altogether Artillery Barrage seems more useful and is better than RoG.
Charrzooka: Longer duration and same recharge as AoM. It is more offensive based and not as situation-specific. Skills activate quickly and recharge quickly so can be used multiple times throughout the duration, both offer aoe. In most situations Charrzooka seems to be better.
Norn:
I cannot give an accurate opinion, however, as they are all form changes like AoM, and each have their own utility and average damage, most not having any heals, having a longer recharge and duration, they may be better overall than AoM in most situations bust statistically seem to be about the same individually for utility.
Summon skills were compared to HoB
Skill set skills were compared to AoM
Passive upon activation/misc skills were compared to RoG
Exceptions were made if skills had similar effects to the human racial skills so that they could be compared more accurately and to avoid situational usage comparisons.
These are only from my observations and experiences, a took info from the wiki and I tried to be as critical as I could, if you disagree, then give reason in the same format and any corrections to statements or assumption I may have made, or ignore it.
I agree, though more specifically, long curly hair, there’s only an afro, all the others are wavy. Long hair in general is needed, especially with pony tails and such.
Though, there’s needs to be more shoulder length hair too, since there’s only 1 style that’s actually shoulder length, and it’s the one logan has, the other 3 are a bit longer than shoulder length, but not by much.
P.S. If the pics are anything to go off Blur, you have good taste in music. =P
all npc faces are supposed to be able to be recreated. you just need to pick the right face for the basic structure, lip colour and eyebrows, you can tweak everything else to match em. Though, time is required for getting things perfect, and I could be wrong.
9/10 – love how you did Cynrose
6/10 – Don’t like the alliteration, though Aeterna suits mesmer imo
9/10 – again, like Cynthe, and fantasy names are always awesome when they have a ring to it…shadowborn…sounds eerie. like it.
good tid bits of back story too
<Main> Jyenh (jsh-ye-n) Xephiros, my ranger, loves high places to feel the winds of Dwayna, but is always saved by Lyssa’s luck when he falls.Jyenh Cayne, my elementalist, a wannabe fire breather with canthan ancestry who looks down on humanity. (yes, he is still a human)
both male.
From my experience and discussions with my guildies and friends, we came to the conclusion that rangers are the BEST crowd control profession, sporting (over) 3 aoe CC utilities that stun, chill, cripple and/or damage enemies, along with an an elite skill that can be used whilst mobile that has a mass CC effect (entangle, and if you’re a human and don’t mind sacrificing the mobility, you get a heal, buff and the same CC capabilities with avatar of melandru)
We have also discussed that rangers actually seem to be one of the best, if not the best, at fighting from downed position due to the pet revive and heal.
So in dungeons where you have waves of monsters that require good CC to handle, or to make the dungeon easier, (2 examples are the first 2 paths of exp AC) rangers are ideal.
Didn’t read it all, but 3 steps:
1: Let the story flow from one section to the next, at the moment it just jump from one ‘template’ to the other and feels disjointed.
2: Artistic cinematics like at the beginning and the story mode dungeons throughout the story, maybe whenever it introduces a new section instead of just an npc talking?
3: Real consequences that carry throughout the entire story, if you pay attention you will soon notice that a lot of the things you chose to ignore never hinders you, and rarely something you obtain actually helps you.
I didn’t mind my character tagging behind the leader who was ‘destined’ to defeat zhaitan. He is the world’s best scholar on all things orr after all. If his personality was askew, so be it. The one thing that did annoy me was how my character, although he was second in command, seemed to have gotten pushed out of the story, maybe my memories a bit off but towards the end I don’t think he was even referred to much, he was just sitting in the background.
At the very least, since I’m left with this feeling it’s not a good sign anyway.
I see where you’re coming from now. Yes certainly, you need to pay attention to your pet, whether you focus on using them or not their skills and aggro they generate can really help you in a fight.
Ranger class is fun indeed. My fav class by far.
Ah coolies, thanks. When I read ‘winter’ I was hoping for some grays, closest eyes are light brown or blue, close enough though I guess.
I’m guessing it’s not just for a limited time but is permanent?
Where’s this quote from? link please? Also, know of anywhere where I can see these new hair and eye colours without buying the item from the gem store?
Play how you want, but realize that you are playing the ranger class. If you don’t want to use pets don’t play ranger.
That’s not the point, I’m saying the pet isn’t everything to a ranger, I like ranger, the skills and animations feel right. I’m playing a ranger for how it’s played, not for its pets, you don’t need to focus on utilising your pet to be a good, or even an excellent ranger.
Rangers aren’t the ‘pet profession’ they are a ‘profession with pets,’ with indicates that it includes, not limits them to pets. If you want to go ahead, if not but you like the feel of a ranger, keep playing, the dps isn’t a great big set back until you get into PvP/WvW, purely due to players knowing how the pets work now.
I find it quite humorous how we/people complain about the ranger class being ‘bad,’ yet when my friends watch me play they say rangers are ‘OP.’ So maybe we’re just looking into minor details?
As much as you complain about pets they are not going to go away. The best thing would be to learn how to optimize them, or if they make you hate playing ranger, re-roll warrior. If the skills make you stay, then I suggest using the pet to make you better as a ranger.
If you actually read my post, I wasn’t complaining about pets, I love having a pet, I was, however, complaining how it was the profession mechanic. I love playing ranger, but I don’t want to play a beast master ranger, aka, a ranger that solely utilises pets, due to the fact there isn’t enough utility for them. I do have a warrior, the animations and play-style doesn’t suit me, nor does the equipment, warriors seem to lack finesse to me unlike the ranger. For the last point, using the pet makes me a worse ranger, as soon as I trait into it a lose those traits that can be better put else where, I only have 5 in BM for swiftness these days. Your way of thinking that all rangers need to use pets to be ‘better’ goes against the ‘play how you want to play’ philosophy.
I don’t even see any problem with the ranger’s damage capacity, I doubt it is even that big. I don’t think Anet would want all damage rangers to use conditions for their damage output, since condition damage is calculated the same for every class it won’t be affected by any sort of handicap for the use of pets.
Daecollo.9578:
When you rolled a ranger, you chose to be a pet class, making you anything else would make you less unique, you “are” a pet class.
Other classes can use ‘pets,’ necros use minions, eles use elementals, mesmers use clones, guardians use spirit weapons, engineers use turrets, though none of these are as ‘permanant’ as ranger pets. I do agree with them being the ‘pet utilising class,’ the class that utilises pets in battle with skills…though I would like to see a wider ranger of pet utilities.
About pets. some people like them other rangers want that damage for themselves instead of having to micromanage an npc. Why can’t the player have the choice of what they would like to play through trait lines? I don’t think it would be such a big deal to give them the option of playing a ranger how you see fit as a player. (ex. a staff ele and I are in a tower trying to kill rams outside) they start using their skills. If I want full 100% of my characters dps i need to put guard on my toolbar send the pet down, then attack with my own skills. But the aoe is harsh so i have to pull them back, then send them back. Meanwhile ele is using 100% dps power np. ) Whats wrong with having the option to stow pets for buffs to self?
Because then you essentially become a warrior, not a ranger. If you want that, re-roll to warrior and you can have it.
No you dont, the professions feel completely different, with or without a pet, the skills are different, the animation is different and play style is different.
I constantly get good results in SPvP when i do it with my ranger, I can solo cap camps in WvW, albeit as long as I don’t need to take on a PC during it, and I excel in PvE. I have an attachments to my pets, though i dont utilise them and i always have the same 2, i use dual axes and a bow (either) which sometimes gets swapped for a greatsword.
All in all, i don’t play the class for a pet, i dont play it because they deal the most damage, offer the most support or can absorb the most damage, i play them because of how they feel, to me, rangers feel like the best class, with the agile movement and finesse they wield in combat.
I have to say I agree to an extent, I think the ranger’s should have gotten a different profession mechanic, the pets deal quite a bit of damage, but i don’t play ranger for the pet, and thus I don’t utilise my pet- simply because it’s a waste as it dies in almost any battle and I hardly even look at it in fights. I really think the mechanic is underpowered in most scenarios, it is really only good with fighting vets and champs up to level 60 from my experience, then all of a sudden they seemingly become useless even as decoys.
A ranger without a pet is an underpowered warrior or thief.
Isn’t that the problem? That they are too reliant on their pets, even when most ranger player’s aren’t beast masters or even utilise their pets to any real extent?
The ranger profession is the only profession that has a mechanic that fits into a single play style (beast masters) and also becomes quite pathetic when fighting a boss or a group.
To utilise its mechanic you either let it be some extra damage and a decoy for weak enemies, or invest in it and solely base your char around your pet and even then it has a hard time standing against stronger foes, and thus so do you.
I think, apart from changing the mechanic, the way to fix this is to give the ranger a few more viable utilities, give them some old fashioned pet attacks like they had in GW1, give utilities that give them more buffs, atm their utility skills seem to be based around positioning and mediocre assist. This would allow beast master build to be more viable for a char, but for those who dont like utilising the ranger pet, skills similar to a warriors physical utilities or other such attack-power skills would need to be introduced. Rangers by themselves are already fine with defence, and pets are too.
As for support, i feel that rangers have just lost the ability to utilise spirits effectively.
Also, those who say ‘if you don’t like a pet, dont play ranger, there are other classes that use bows’ and such, don’t be ridiculous, as i stated, and as many people i know do to, we dont play ranger for the pet or weapons, but for the feel of the class, their movement, how they attack. Thief bows feel clunky, and warriors feel slow, ranger’s have a fine-tuned finesse about them that is appealing to many players.

After reading and skim reading through all these comments I couldn’t believe how many people passed it off with a phrase that said ‘it doesn’t matter, it’s just a game,’ when in fact it does. Every form of media alters peoples’ views, games actually more so as you are a participant. Your brain is still making these decisions, and the more you familiarise with them in a game, the more you do in real life, it’s a habit of thinking. Basically this means that, if you think that it’s alright, and you give into your impulses in a game world, it makes it easier to do the same in the real world, even if not by much, it still changes and actual persons opinions and views, thus their personality. The player and the character are one in the same.
However, in the OP’s context, I don’t see the separatists as being oppressed as though they are normal citizens, in fact they would be closer to a dangerous cult, though that’s not quite right either. When I did the task i passed it off thinking of them as terrorists, they terrorise the common people, they hinder advancement for peace and they themselves disrupt efforts between different races, just like terrorists these days, and as such, they even appeal to similar interests in others. Being in Ascalon, all of the citizens would more than likely have family members or ancestors who fought and died fighting against the Charr, some may even have their relatives fighting the Charr as vengeful spirits.
As a side note, there is nothing as false as freedom, everyone is bound by something, be it something individual like ideals, communal, such as laws, or universal, as is nature.
…Kirito uses greatswords? :s
In the original books yes, and the same image is used for the anime, though the sizing belongs to a different race so he can use it as a single handed sword. (in ALO)
As for how to make a character a replica, I’d say ranger, single handed sword, maybe add a dagger for dual wield since they can get pre big for some skins. I say ranger for 3 reasons:
1 – the armour is as close to kirito’s as possible, light armour doesn’t look to have the same texture.
2 – the style of fighting is similar to kirito’s with all of the dodging and evading, and even if you choose to use a great sword there’s a lot of movement in the ranger skills, also keep in mind great swords for rangers are placed on their back.
3 – ranger’s have a lot of complimentary traits and skills for a kirito-esque character, having utility dodging and swiftness would be the most noticeable.
the cons however, is that kirito never tamed any sort of beast, so it may look out of place there, though i think a raven might suit the appearance.
Name change is separate and is coming in a future update . Also, I believe the reason why they don’t include them as one package, thus increasing the price, is to not disadvantage those who do not want to change their gender, but merely their basic appearance. For example, people rushed through creation at the start and ended up with eyes they didn’t like or they didn’t like how their head was sized in-game. So I would believe it would disadvantage more people than it would advantage them.
you humans are focused on PONY TAILS!?
Looks like us Charr gotta come blow up your stupid city again.
The charr males get a braid at the front, human males should get a ponytail at the back. Gives contrast to the races.
You just need to stick in between the spirits and use healing spring, that way if you just swap to melee you can take the agro with them while providing a water field and healing for quite some time, this traited with BM and nature you can get improved regen and higher healing rates, plus your pet can last longer and also helo take agro if you command it well. speaking of which, there are a pets that give combo fields, such as the murellows poison cloud.
Yes I know it is limited, but it is possible, even if only for a short time. I do agree though that banners are better for dungeons, but only because they aren’t destructible.
Please remember the other side of combos though, rangers pretty much use the combo fields constantly, so they’re really good for the second link.
The idea of adding a stylist or any appearance change NPC for a gem sink is brilliant, or even if it’s just buying the hairstyle from the gem store and then being able to apply it to any of your characters through an item. I vote ponytail and a wider variety of curly hair, particularly long curly hair, due to the absence of these quite common RL hairstyles. Especially for male characters.
The only thing I can say I don’t agree with at all is the torch being bad. The reasons that I’ve seen listed here is because it does minor condition damage and requires you to be in melee for the last skill.
To avoid these problems you can simply use it as a combo field. With axe as main hand it gives you the ability to spread burning to your foes, with sword as a main hand it is for melee, and it works wonderfully with the leap skill it has as it burns all foes adjacent to you. I see a torch as more desirable in PvE than a warhorn (mainly due to the recharge).
I use spirits on my ranger and I don’t have any problems. You can move when casting them so there isn’t any down-time in combat with them, and the secondary activation is all up to player skill.
I’m not really sure if I’m understanding the whole ‘rangers are lacking in team support’ area since it has just as much support capabilities as any other class, it just might be a bit different, look at banner wars, glamour mes’, water eles and area-defense guardians, each one supports a team in different ways.
And I’m interested in seeing you complete a dungeon with 3 rangers
In theory, you could have a spirit ranger for support, one melee ranger with traps and area utilities for control, and another focused on dealing damage. They will all be doing damage, and they could utilise pets to control the area, particularly for bosses by drawing them in and out of attacks. Not sure if it’s practical, but it seems plausible.
