Hey guys,
I love the class concept of the Revenant – a warrior of the mists invoking legends of old to screw up the baddies. Hands down my favorite class concept of every gw2 class. But I’m having a hard time with the gameplay and I’m wondering if it has to be like what metabattle says it has to be.
For condition: https://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Revenant_-_Condi_DPS
You get to use your weapon abilities, but you don’t swap weapons other than for breakbar, and worse of all you only use 1 utility skill on each stance – Embrace the Darkness/Vengeful Hammers, until your energy is depleted.
For power: https://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Herald_-_S/A
You at least get to use the different herald abilities (sort of, you just leave most of them on), but you only get to use 1 unique sword ability, other than that it’s just auto attack and energy drain. And again, you pretty much only weapon swap for breakbar. For max DPS, I’m not even supposed to use Unrelenting Assault (sword 3) and that’s one of my favorite abilities in the game!
Now on my Ranger, Engineer, Thief, etc, I’m constantly utilizing my utility skills. Not just to get rid of the odd boon or as a unneeded gap closer, but traps, venoms, kits, spirits, elixirs, extra healing, extra stealth, etc.
On the revenant, unless I’m in PvP (though even there sometimes), I feel like I never touch half of my utility skills because they take away from damage. Other classes don’t have to give up their damage to use their utility. They may have to take one second of time to cast a spell, but at least they get to cast it without wasting all of their precious energy.
So I guess my question is this: Is that really the only way to play revenant? In order to be competitive, do I have to play like this? Can utilizing more weapon skills (sword’s 3, switching to hammer, switching back), and utilizing more utility (Jalis lightning field stone path, Mallyx’s aoe leap and ranged confuse, soon-to-be-renegades spirits) do decent dps? Maybe not THE BEST, but, enough? It’s just so much more fun.
Hi so the leeching venoms trait makes us (and everyone we give the venom to) leech life from our foes. So it does regular damage and heals us. Is this leech affected by our stats at all? Is the damage affected by power/the heal affected by healing power?
Been playing around with fun defensive builds as I help my friend start out int he game. Been using the staff’s aoe blind/vulnerability to help them kill people and stay alive, and I’m wondering if (as the staff is power), building power and healing power with Skelk, Ice Drake, and either Devourer or Skale venoms would help buff those respective venoms as (save for Skale venom) they don’t do condition damage.
Thank you for any and all help!
Aftercast on Inspiring Reinforcement makes it impossible.
Sorry if I’m a noob, but what do you mean by aftercast? When I do it the path hits at least twice once when I put it down and once again at the very end after surge is done. I just can’t decifer all the numbers in between.
Aftercast is a period of time after the skill has gone off, but you are locked out of starting a new skill. Typically, this is for smoothing animations out, though there are some skills in the game where the aftercast is not the full length of the animation (Gravedigger is a notable example).
Basically, once you finish casting Inspiring Reinforcement, there is a short period (I believe it’s about .3 seconds) before you can start the cast of Surge of the Mists. That delay ends up making it impossible to combo them as you hoped.
Sorry, but I just tried it and that’s not true. I can use Surge almost immediately after IR. My character (and therefore the enemy I push) remains at the edge of the path.
Edit: In fact, I can dash in front of it. It’s seeming to me it’s less of a factor of being able to…it just may be difficult to time and aim it perfectly to get good/worthwhile results.
But no way is it impossible, from what I gather by basic sense in playing.

Hello!
I feel like these two go together and are a combo, but I can’t tell for sure or if I’m just imagining it.
Inspiring Reinforcements hits 6 times with its cascading attack, but moves forwards, and Surge of the Mists moves them forward.
Does using Surge of the Mists right after Inspiring Reinforcement effectively combo into making Inspiring Reinforcements hit the same target numerous times (assuming we keep the foe on the path as we push them)?
Let me know what you think/know!
Why would you even want to play GW2 using nothing but a single weapon set ever for over 1,000 hours? I’ll never understand players who hate kits.
Why would you even want to play GW2 using nothing but a single set of utility skills for over 1,000 hours? Abandoning 12+ other utility skills? I’ll never understand players who exclusively use kits.
I’m not saying I refuse to use kits. I’m saying I’d rather not use exclusively kits. I think it defeats the purpose of choice in Gw2.
That really stinks.
Does that mean, though, that if I don’t care as much about DPS, and I’d rather build a bit more supporty (not exclusively supporting with the med kit, mind you. I still want to do some damage haha), rather than max DPS…I wouldn’t need the kits?
Thank you for your responses.
To be honest, I’m not the biggest fans of the engineer’s kits, particularly the grenade and bomb kits. But I also don’t care about being a top DPS. I’d much rather support and CC while doing a medium amount of DPS. (One of the reasons I love this game!) So maybe my dislike for kits is okay? I love the rest of their utility, and the complexity they bring. Toolbelt is a lot of fun.
They both look appealing. Bearshaman, when you say:
- Engineer can bring healing, a wide range of buffs and debuffs, it truly is a very versatile class, in addition to good dps.
Do you mean they are good at bringing a bunch of buffs, or they just bring a smattering of buffs that might get lost in a large group anyway? Or are they quite helpful?
Also, does the warrior have any ability to heal or protect allies?
For example, right now leveling I’m running this: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQFAUlUUhusYNVw2Kw6FLkG0YAa+z/K9pbdYuHaQB
Focusing on maximizing DPS from explosions and static discharge, among other short CD proc traits, while also gaining the group benefits from turret traits.
(Just tools and explosives in leveling right now, haven’t unlocked 3rd – but use 3rd in PvP)
I seem to take things down quick while leveling, and I’m using all my abilities basically on cooldown, so I’m not wasting any of them. In the Mists I seem to be able to take down the combat training classes fairly easily as well.
Is a build like this horrible at end game?

Hey guys,
Just got back to Gw2 after a long hiatus. Was leveling a 51 norn engineer before, and started him up again recently. I have noticed, though, that the “meta” builds, and most builds I find online, all have at least one kit (and honestly most have 2, 3, or 4).
It’s not that I hate the kits, but I don’t like being tied to certain utility abilities. When it comes down to it too, sometimes I feel like I do worse because I’m switching between what feels like a million abilities. Plus, I just like gadgets, elixirs, turrets, etc (haven’t unlocked gyros yet) more than kits. The grenade and bomb kits in particular I just do not like.
Are the kits really required to be viable at all? Or is it one of those things where if you put more effort into the more difficult playstyle it can be more rewarding (if played correctly), whereas the simpler utility skills might not have the potential for as high of efficiency, but can still be kitten?
Thank you!
(P.S. I’ve never cared about being the best DPS…that said I don’t want to have lackluster DPS and lackluster support if that’s what it comes down to. Please help!)
Back to the game after a long while, and I can’t decide if I want to level an Engineer or a Warrior. Have Warrior at nearly 20 and an engineer at 50 from a year or two ago.
My favorite things in a class are: usefulness to a group (through buffs and debuffs more than healing, but that’s always nice too), CC (love it), and outlasting numerous enemies (typically through condition damage). I have a couple friends who I always play with; they main an ele and guard respectively, if that helps at all.
Looking namely at Fractals/Dungeons, WvW, and Conquest PvP. I’m not as interested in Raids, but still would like to be helpful in a raid if I ever do them.
Not really interested in the other classes! Besides my thief that I have boosted to 80. I just want to actually level at least one class to 80. =)
Either one jump out?
Thank you!
Hello! I just got a friend of mine into GW2 and we want to level two characters together. He has his heart set on a GS/Hammer Guardian – building power. He doesn’t care too much for having the best builds, but I like to try and make it as good as possible.
So I want to know, primarily for leveling and two-man dungeons, what is the best profession/type of profession to pair with this Guardian?
Thanks a bunch!
I’m hearing a resounding mesmer, as well as thief and engineer.
I know engineers are considered the “least played class”
But where do theives and mesmers lie in that? I don’t like playing overplayed classes.
I’m namely thinking in terms of WvW roaming.
Edit: And just out of curiosity, because I’ve heard Warriors, Rangers, and Elementalists are good at WvW solo roaming, are any of those over played or “most played”?
(edited by Lucky Charmz.5089)
Sounds like youre looking for a phantasm mesmer!
For this playstyle, you let your phantasms do damage, and all you do is survive.
You have 2 blocks, perma vigor, blurred frenzy, 2 stealths, and you just troll/kite your opponent to death while they waste time trying to:
- hit you
- kill your phantasms
The whole style is “outlasting” your opponent (which is extremely easy on a mesmer, we have some of the most actuve defense)
If you want more information or a build/guide, feel free to whisper me or send me a PM
.
Oohhh I like that. The whole idea of “outlasting” the opponent. Is Mesmer pretty much the only prof that does this? Or can other profs do it well too?
Thanks for speedy responses, but I’m not too interested in just being able to take hits. I like this game because of the dodging. Is there a class that can dodge more often than others through traits, evasion abilities? What about “invulnerability” moves? Even something like the necromancer’s death shroud, boosting their survivability considerably.
I don’t care about simply being able to shrug off hits, rather than the ability to stay alive and be able to get out of a sticky situation instead of just getting bursted down instantly.
I did see something about the “Medicat” or something like that for Engineer – pretty much just a distraction that uses confusion for the people to kill themselves. I like that, are there any classes that don’t necessarily use the same tactics, but can fill that “distraction” role? Or is that pretty much just the guardian as a whole?
What about water/earth elementalists? Death shroud necromancers? Sword and board warriors? Stealth-a-lot rogues? Evasion rangers? Mesmer clones (are they really that good?)
I just threw out a bunch of things I know nothing about. Are any of them a thing?
I just don’t like the look of a guardian. I want SOME viable range and it seems to be the only one who can’t go with full ranged build and be able to do anything – particularly in case I do want to switch to doing ranged damage at some point in time.
(In all mmos – ranged dps and tanking has always been my favorites.)
Edit: Oh yeah – and for leveling I’ve always love “AOE Grinding” – can any class do this? The monsters in the game seem to be a bit stronger than some games.
(edited by Lucky Charmz.5089)
Hi!
I really like classes/professions that have high survivability (can evade/deflect/etc. attacks, high defense, self heals, etc.) and no real burst damage, but rather decent sustained damage and aoe damage. This usually comes in the form of dots (multidotting + active mitigation).
The type of character to simply outlast someone in a duel instead of “who can burst who down first”.
I’m wondering what is a profession that can do this? If there even is one.
Thank you!
Edit: Knowing the “best possible” would be nice, but I’d also like to know the ones that can simply do it well.
Darn, I see. I just wanted to be able to strafe with 1 xD oh well. Thanks!
I used to play about 8 months ago, and I’m just now getting back into GW2.
Has the flamethrower missing problem been fixed yet?
The ranger dies easily in melee range. Therfore, the melee ranger in PvP has to play very defensively – with defense stats like toughness and vitality. You don’t dish out the most damage in the world but I find it very fun.
You can go with signets or traps.
The problem isn’t whether we have pets or not.
The problem we should be discussing is how to make our pets and spirits die less easily.
I say, reduce the damage they take from AoE.
Yeah, and my dreams to be more of a druid-ranger than a hunter-ranger could still happen even with having a permapet. So I don’t mind.
I do think pets and spirits should be immune to AoE, though.
I would like to see it that the ranger have the option of having a pet or no pet. Maybe make it a single utility skill called, “Pet: you gain the ability to tame two pets and keep them…blah blah blah exactly what they are now, but maybe a bit stronger to balance out using a utility skill.”
This would make it so people who want to play a nature-based class COULD. Well at least it would be a step in the right direction. We still need something like a staff.
I feel like the best way to handle this is simple: Make it so pets and spirits take no damage from AoE.
Then, as long as they don’t aggro in dungeons, etc. (as they shouldn’t in group content) they will survive just fine. Same as for PvP.
At the same time, people can’t just have their pet run at a person while the person hides in PvP, because then the enemy can target and kill your pet.
Just make it so pets and spirits are immune to AoE damage, and they have to be specifically targeted and attacked in order to take damage.
I love the sword/axe and GS build way too much.
But what I need to know, is for my PvE purposes, what should I build stat-wise?
Power? Condition Damage? Precision? Toughness?
Hi.
I have been using sword/axe and GS for some time now with quickening zephyr, signet of the hunt, and flame trap.
I love combining flame trap with leaps, and particularly the whirl from whirling defense (axe 5).
My question is, should I build condition damage, power, or both for a build like this?
Or is really ineffective for me to use the flame trap, and I should use something else instead? Like signet of the wild?
This is purely for PvE/leveling purposes.
I definitely think piercing by default is a bad idea.
What I DO think should happen, is give the bows the ability to shoot over people.
Idk about the SB, but the LB definitely.
This would make it so we could always just shoot the person farthest away so we could actually utilize that damage, and we wouldn’t have to worry about line of sight.
Spirits are part of the Rangers, if thats what you’re looking for. Unfortunatly there isn’t too much fun with pet selection aside from feeling like a hunter/huntress so I can see where you want a more “nature class” but they do have Sylvari which might satisfy your needs (their racial skills). If they allowed more pet selection and got some “spirit” versions of some or something that could be cool. Don’t have to be any stronger than normal pets, just the look and type of skills would be fine.
It seems as though spirits are the ONLY thing giving Rangers the nature-magic feel. Tis why I say it has great potential for it, but it’s still not.
It is my understanding that the Ranger is supposed to be both the “hunter” type archetype and the “nature-magic” archetype.
I’m wondering what are the best weapons and skills to use to FEEL most like this nature-magic class?
I don’t care about how good it is, I just want to feel natury and magicy. xD
Because I love melee nature-magic based classes. So I go melee ranger. (Kind of my only option).
2. Rangers are already like hunters, they just have more utility skills like spirits. They have traps, pets and bows.
The game is still new, so more weapon and skill are bound to come in sometime.
I agree. They have great potential for both hunter and druid, but right now they’re only hunter.
I love GW2 but I have a problem – I play nature based classes like druids and shamans, and GW2 doesn’t have one.
The elementalist is a mage, not a nature-based class.
The ranger is supposed to be the nature based class but it doesn’t feel like it. To put it in WoW terms, it feels like a hunter as opposed to a druid or shaman, just like the difference between a druid/shaman and a mage.
I just want to play a nature based class. So I have two suggestions:
Either
1. Fix Ranger Spirits and give them at least a staff. In GW1, many rangers ran around with staves and hammers. A hammer and/or scepter would be nice too, just to have more than 1 nature-magic weapon.
or
2. Make the ranger a hunter class, based around physical damage and traps and stuff like that, then ADD a legitimate nature-based class.
The ranger just doesn’t entirely cut it for me in the nature aspect, though it very strongly satisfies the hunting aspect.
Side note: If hunters get guns before staves, I feel like we’ll have go with option 2. That or just have a bunch of unsatisfied, nature-loving customers.
to me. i have pushed this prof to its max since BWE1. as someone who always plays nature based characters (shaman, druids), i feel the ranger was just so poorly executed. and it does not feel like a nature based class. it just doesnt, you can argue it any way you want. this may be due to uselessness of spirits and lackluster pets.
i have lots of success with various builds in tpvp, but im not having any FUN.
the pet is a liability in PVE. i have no attachment to my pets. theyre idiotic, unresponsive, and poorly designed. not to mention kinda ugly (except a few cool ones like birds).
compared to other profs, the ranger is just bad in WvW. i feel like i bring small things to the table. for example, the rifle warrior does vastly superior ranged dps because bullets connect nicely with the target. mesmers, thieves, eles, guards bring so much to the table. rangers, necros and engies are bottom of the barrel in wvw.
i just feel a lot of my GW2 grief would dissipate if i were to just go back to my guardian or mesmer, both of which bring huge things to team fights.
anyone else feeling disconnected from their ranger?
Though I don’t really care how good the ranger is, I too always play the nature-based class.
And I agree that the ranger doesn’t feel like a nature based class at all. It feels like a hunter class. In tuned with nature but not nature-based per say.
It’s like the difference between a hunter and a druid/shaman in WoW. This class has great potential to be both, but especially with the broken spirits, it feels like a strictly hunter class.
That’s why I think we should get a staff. And our spirits should be fixed. And then maybe a out of water spear (though I think a lot of classes should get this). Then it would feel right.
I also hate how all of our pets are baby pets. It’s particularly noticeable with the Polar Bear. When you tame him, you can clearly see that it’s a baby in comparison. And I think it just looks dumb.
Also, Kasama and Durzlla – we’re sharing opinions here, not sharing facts and saying what SHOULD happen.
I want crossbow, i could care less about staff.
Crossbow would be sweet – and I’m assuming this will be the first new weapon the ranger gets. It’s just more straightforward than the gun and the staff – It’s a bow. xD
It would be sweet if it had a long cast time snipe like ability.
I was thinking maybe a trap build like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQJARVjEV11xVuVo2BilCBFomCNZJ2D+zoHVwnKOr a signet build like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQJARVjAVB2JWGWs2Bi1DCFoB1UoJL5U4fPVwnKAre either of these good? Or good for what I’m looking for? Is one better than the other?
They both look ok to me, but personally I would rather put 20 points in skirmishing over nature magic in the second build, with bleed on crits and reduced timers on shortbow, you’ll gain more damage over the 5% sword trait but lose vitality some regen and protection, up to you if it’s worth I guess.
Thank you!
…do I just not get help or something? It’s not an irrelevant rage post or anything, I just want some help.
I made a post once about the addition of a quarterstaff into the game – I think it would be cool, and it would make more sense than a regular staff in the sense you speak of it, Jarettellis.
Sorry, could anyone please just share a build of theirs that is similar to what I’m looking for? It would be greatly appreciated!
I’d much rather see ArenaNet make the Ranger more into an " 1950s military ranger", then a “druid ranger”.
I think the class you’re looking for, then, is either the warrior or engineer.
How many military riflemen have a giant brown bear following them all over the place and can call birds and spirits of nature at will?
The engineer has grenades and bombs and pistols and rifles, and the warrior is a great sniper with a rifle.
That’s not a ranger like class.
A ranger with a rifle screams “hunter” to me, and so I guess the question is are they the same thing? Nature lover or nature predator?
I feel like the ranger might be the “nature class” with the pet and spirits and nature magic and the ability to call birds and such.
And I feel like we might need to add a “scout” class or something that is like the ranger, but without the nature aspect. So he is a master or bows, guns, etc.
Which ever way it goes, we either need a druid class and the ranger to be more physical or a scout class and the ranger to be more magical.
Just thought of an idea, and I thought I’d throw it out there.
What if we got a staff and it had 2 “basic attacks.” One would be kind of like a ranged magical nuke, like the Elementalist Fire Staff 1 ability. And another would be a a combo of three melee twirly-staff like skills, just as many melee weapons have a combo of three.
I don’t think it would be OP or anything, just different. The typical “1” skill is just a filler, and isn’t typically main damage, so we would give up one powerful CD skill for more utility and diversity – two effective ranges, 1 weapon.
I agree with this, i personally think Staff would fit better with ranger though because it still allows for the whole “Martial” aspect (IE we could still bash people with our staff where a scepter, not so much…) not to mention that in GW1 quite a few rangers used staffs, where no rangers (that i know of) used scepters.
Staffs were used for Heavy Spirit, Traps, and Beast Mastery builds in GW1 (IE a majority of your skills were for one of those 3 skills, EASILY 5 – 8 of your skills, out of 8, were those), so they have that whole lore aspect behind why staff would be used over scepter.
That being said i would love to have another ranged 1 hander… so if we could get both i’d be a VERY VERY VERY happy ranger, the fact we got neither staff nor Hammer (2 very common GW1 weapons for ranger) is upsetting…
I see, I never play GW1 so I wouldn’t know. I agree with the physical aspect of the staff.
I don’t know if hammer really makes sense (too bulky and the ranger has more finesse), but the staff really seems to fit.
In regards to another 1h ranged weapon…I’m sure if we get rifles, the pistol won’t be too far behind..
Staff would be awesome. Or scepter. Scepter would be cool, because then we could use it with our warhorn and it’s buff.
I think it would make a LOT of sense for us to get a staff or a scepter, because without one “nature magic” seems like a stupid and pointless name for a tree. Spirits alone don’t suffice for an entire talent tree.
But, if we can’t get staves and scepters, I do think they should put some kind of a nature druid/shaman type character into the game.
Though my understanding is that the ranger is supposed to be said kind of class, so I don’t fully understand why we can’t get staves and/or scepters…
I was thinking maybe a trap build like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQJARVjEV11xVuVo2BilCBFomCNZJ2D+zoHVwnK
Or a signet build like this?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQJARVjAVB2JWGWs2Bi1DCFoB1UoJL5U4fPVwnK
Are either of these good? Or good for what I’m looking for? Is one better than the other?
Hi!
I really like the Ranger – and I particularly love the Ranger’s GS.
I also really like the short bow with the ranger.
Is there a solid PvE build out there that has good survivability and is good with use of the GS and SB?
(I would be willing to go long bow if it would be that much more beneficial)
I like the look and idea of traps, so if a trap build would work, that would be great. If not, not a problem – I like most of the ranger utility skills.
Not so much. The staff is very support oriented. Since the auto attack is an aoe, it can keep upon damage while hitting multiple mobs at once. But for the most part, you trade off decent damage in return for better utility and control.
Okay thank you!
So Guardians can’t do decent ranged damage…that now leaves Engineer, Ranger, or Necro?
Right now I see 4 possibilities (other than warrior).
Guardian – melee, survivability – but can he do decent ranged damage?
Engineer – melee (tool kit and some rifle/pistol moves are melee), ranged (obviously), and can have nice survivability with med kit, blocks, invulnerables, etc. – problem is he’s not very good at all of them. (I have a level 30, and he feels UP…probably because engineers are UP)
Ranger – melee, ranged both good – but can he take the hits? Can I, as a ranger, walk into a group of 5 enemies and outlive them without kiting up the wazzoo?
Necro – seems to be the best option atm? Has melee and ranged capabilities. Can take a bunch of damage. How’s a melee necro in PvP?
Who can take more abuse, ranger or engineer?
…do I ask too many questions?
Gaurdian.
They have great casting spells with staffs as well as using greatswords. They can heal a lot aswell which makes them great at both dps anf healing. Plus anyone who is running a dungeon will always want a gaurdian . XD im thinking of making one now my warrior is lvl 80.
Can the staff do good damage?
