Profession Help...another one of these...

I know these get old, but I need help picking a profession. PLEASE help.

I don’t like being an altoholic and I’m trying to be better.

I recently posted a Q/A on this forum about melee casters…but I realized that’s not really what I want.

I want a class that can do solid ranged and/or mid DPS, solid melee DPS, and has good raw defense/survivability (being able to take damage and use attacks that evade and heal as opposed to survivability that is stunning, running, and kiting – I want to stand and fight).

I don’t have to be the best at any of those 3 but I have to be able to do all of those three.

Only thing is – I do not want to be a Warrior. They just seem too easy and overplayed.

PLEASE help!

Necro/Guardian

Lucky Charmz.5089

I’m looking for a melee/magic class that isn’t an ele or mesmer.

I’m looking at the Necro and the Guardian, but I only want to pick one.

I LOVE melee casters. I love hitting people with weapons and shooting them with spells when they get farther away it just makes me giddy.

Most of my time will be spent melee or mid-ranged/melee, but I want to still be able to kill things from ranged if I can.

Question is: What should I be? Necro or Guardian? PvE? PvP?

It is of my knowledge that (in PvE at least) the necro has a bunch of survivability because of high base health + life steal + death shroud, and it has the range……but can a necro survive as a dagger necro in melee range in PvP?

It is also of my knowledge that the Guardian is labeled as the “melee caster” but can a guardians still effectively play ranged? (I like to be ranged and shoot things on big boss fights and stuff, but melee while questing and killing a bunch of little guys)

Hey,

I’m a human engineer. So I’m just talking about the Human Racial Elites and the Engineer Elites.

For PvE purposes, is any elite skill significantly better than the others? Or are they all about the same?

The Reaper, Avatar, and Hounds all look super cool. Being a power engineer I’d go either Avatar or Hounds, but if I was condition I’d go Reaper.

For PvE use, I build power and vitality and/or toughness if I need the defense, and I use rifle, med kit, tool kit, elixer B, and rifle turret.

The only really essential thing is the Static Discharge trait.

I like it because of it’s melee and ranged capabilities.

It might not be the best thing ever, but it’s a solid base to a build you can make however you want.

When I think hybrid, my first thing I think of is melee and ranged power at the same time. Sure, you can play rifle and p/p and everything at melee range, and the flamethrower technically is melee ranged (though it’s super bugged) but there’s something about hitting someone with a weapon as opposed to shooting them that makes it feel better.

Again, it’s not the best, but I really enjoy it.

Exploration Race?

Hi.

I don’t know what race to be. They all look cool.

I typically like races who’s lore/story is a lot about exploration. Exploring things like ruins, etc.

I played dwarf a lot when I played WoW, particularly because of the exploration background.

I know stories are race-locked, so I want to pick the right race.

I don’t like being centered around war, but I do like fighting. I like more of a mystical enemy rather than an enemy who is an enemy simply because of a moral dispute or something.

I know Asura used to live underground like dwarves before they came up – that’s cool.
Sylvari just awoke and are curious individuals.

I don’t know much about the other 3.

Idk, now I’m rambling.

Yes I know we suck, and I’m angry too.

But there is no need to shoot down every build by comparing it to other classes. We aren’t going to have a build as good or better than other classes.

Instead of shooting them down, say yeah – this is as good as all the other builds we have, have fun!

I’m actually level 39 , now that the grenade kit has been nerfed , i don’t know what skills to use.

The dps with the rifle is awful , the bomb kit is boring .

Anyone has a build for a level 39 engy who still love the class and actually want to get to 80 .

I don’t want to be a guardian and zerg every mobs but i don’t want neither to kill mob in 20 hits.<

Please help !

Thanks and Merry Chrismast

I’ve found that you always need at least one offensive kit in your arsenal. The rifle gives great DPS output in pve, but it’s very bursty (3 and 5 do your main damage and they have more than short cds). So I build power/toughness (I’m typically in melee range) and I switch between my tool kit and rifle for damage. While you’re smackin away with a wrench, your bursty rifle skills are coming back and vise versa.

Before I had the tool kit, I switched between the rifle and grenades (sometimes went bomb if I felt like it). But that’s how you do good DPS in PvE in my opinion…you switch, unload, switch back, unload, etc.

I also went double pistols for some time…and with things like poison dart volley (short CD) you don’t really need to switch back and forth – ESPECIALLY if you have the trait that reduces CD time by 20%.

And that + speedy kits/permaswiftness, I rather like our leveling.

Of course we can’t walk up and kill 1000+ bad guys with a single swing of a sword like a Warrior, but we play for the style, not the numbers.

Yes, engineers are pretty kitten right now, but stop being so negative about it! I wish we were a bit better to be more competitive too, but now I’m seeing people shoot down peoples ideas on how to be good. Ex: someone posts a thread that’s titled: My Build! =) And the person goes on to say how s/he really likes the build, then I see people commenting on it on how it sucks and isn’t competitive – we have very few builds that actually are competitive!

We’re not engineers to be good. We’re engineers to be engineers.

The way I see it is there are two different kinds of class-choosers in mmos…the people who love their class, and the people who love to be OP. That’s why there are so many warriors around, half of them truly love the warrior style, and others just like that they’re so good.

So just keep loving the class! There are SO many different ways you can build the engineer – 90% of which are below average xD – but play your engineer, not the engineer that is said to be “good”.

Sorry, I just had to say it.

I’ve actually been hearing that p/p is one of our last viable builds.

The thing I noticed about it is it doesn’t really matter how you build it (power vs condition damage) but you need a lot of precision.

I’ve found that a healthy mix of condition and power is best, not all one or the other.

But this is just my observation.

p/p works great with elixirs and it works great with static discharge (if built more for power)

Point of kits

in Engineer

Posted by: Lucky Charmz.5089

Lucky Charmz.5089

Other than med kit…what’s the point in kits?

We don’t get two weapon set spots, so it’s not like we’re getting an EXTRA set of five skills, and it takes up a utility skill spot where every class gets a utility skill spot…

It’s like we get 1 less utility skill if we use kits, comparatively to the other classes.

Is there something I’m missing here?

Pistol - CD, Power, or Precision?

in Engineer

Posted by: Lucky Charmz.5089

Lucky Charmz.5089

So about a week ago I posted this on the Engineer forum: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Single-Target-DPS/first#post956827

I wanted a single-target DPS build and it exploded into a debate between CD and Power p/p engineers.

I did some experimenting (granted I’m lvl 27 and have no idea how to number crunch) and found that they the came out about even! I simply had 2 different armor/pistol sets – one “strong” and the other “ravaging.” And just looking at the abilities themselves, due to poison dart volley and blowtorch hitting numerous times (blowtorch when close range) the damage came out very close to the same! Power wasn’t ridiculously more, and CD wasn’t ridiculously more.

Now I also know that precision comes second in line for both a power-built p/p engineer and a CD-built p/p engineer…

So why not have a primarily precision engineer? With Power and CD evenly added as secondary stats? Then some toughness as well?

With nomenclature, I’d say “Rampager’s” with maybe some “Berserker’s” and “Rabid” thrown in?

But let me just say, I have no idea how to “crunch numbers” like some of you good fellows do, and this is completely off of observation.

I’ve been messing around on my now lvl 27 engineer…and I’ve gotten roughly equivalent gear for power and for condition damage. (One is full ravaging and another is full strong)
I also reset my traits so it wasn’t swayed one way or another.

And just looking at the abilities themselves, due to poison dart volley and blowtorch hitting numerous times (blowtorch when close range) the damage came out very close to the same! Power wasn’t ridiculously more, and CD wasn’t ridiculously more.

I’ve come to the conclusion that not CD and not power, but precision might be the way to go with the p/p engineer! Whether you build CD or Power, precision is always the secondary stat we need. Why not make it the primary stat and just take power, CD, or toughness whenever?

pdv=poison dart volley.
pistol 1 scales poorly with both direct and cond damage.
with coated bullets it can scale well with direct damage due to double and triple hitting
EG=elixir gun.
EG 1 has a 4s bleed. so will do more damage then pistol 1 till coated bullets.

When leveling, gear falling behind your char level happens alot.
my 24 warrior, has a 19 rifle atm.
Kits, and condition damage scales directly with level.
Direct damage scales with gear. (and level based power.)

So…seeing as though i’m a long way from getting coated bullets and I’m going p/p…should I go condition or power? I typically regear often. I probably fully regear every 5 levels at least.

Burns with moderate durations do do well, in solo pve. As they do not cleanse it.
And you do not have to compete with other allies.
In dungeons however. you can not have 2 burns. anything over 100% uptime is lost damage. Long duration burns are bad due to this. overwritten, cleansed, or target dies. its wasted damage.
Also, once every 12s probably isn’t your main source of damage. Although it is decent for sure.

Not having coated bullets does change things, as you say, you are not max level.
Pistols without coated bullets, I would honestly say are FT bad atm. p1 is pretty bad, EG 1 probably beats it, again, if you dont have coated bullets.
do remember things like retaliation and discharge scale with power though, as well as wrench, barrage, suprise shot.

A leveling build that focuses on discharge, pdv, and static shot should be very effective though.
Strong gear.
10 in tools for discharge. get tk, rifle turret, and maybe grenades for barrage.

So, for my purposes (solo PvE) would it be better to stack condition damage? Because nothing is cleansed?

I’m just solo leveling and I really like the dual pistols…the tool kit also looks fun.
So I’m looking for a solo PvE build that uses dual pistols (or tool kit).

Also, what is pdv and EG?

well, we litteraly have only 2 single target weapons.
Rifle. and EG

and if you consider the pierce aoe. we have none. not to mention all the 2-5 skills are aoe.

The pistols=cond is a fallacy. The argument I was making was even pistol, due to coated bullets, direct damage, and scaling on traits, scales better with power.
So pistols are power and cond more specifically. To max their dps, focus on power/crit/crit damage, and gain condition damage via might, and other nominal sources.
Other. not engineer professions do a better job scaling with cond. 15 stack of confuse mesmers, warriors stacking 10s bleed every hit.

Post patch. Rifle is looking really strong for single target dps.
Rifle, tk(for throw wrench and CC), and discharge. Sigil of battle. The rest is up to you. 20 or30 alch, and 10 or 20 tools.
Sitting duck, 10% rifle damage, 20% cdr. (cdr vs range, vs blind is up for grabs. avoid the 50% on crit vul)
alch, 20% cd, 409. hgh if you go 30.
tools. discharge. 20 power tools, if you go 30 take your pick
note, if you go past 20 tools, swap to medkit from elixir h.

utility skills. TK.
elixir B if you go alch, net turret if you go tools maybe. some options here.
Elixir R no matter what. so good.

I’ve been running a condition damage/precision/toughness p/p engineer…I’m going to try out this power engineer, but I have a question.

Before, my main source of damage was blowtorch…it does massive amounts of condition damage (burning) (I’m talking PvE)…

With Power…would my explosive shot then be my main source of damage?

So that leaves p/p, p/s, rifle, tool kit…

I love the engineer…and I love melee, and something about thwacking people with a wrench really appeals to me.

I know the tool kit isn’t the most viable for leveling or anything for that matter because it doesn’t do that much damage and it’s in melee range, lowering survivability.

But if I were to do it anyway…which I most likely will…what should I build with it?

I’m assuming for other utility skills…healing turret, thumper turret, and…either net turret or rocket turret. And supply crate.

Then should I build primarily power? Or toughness?

And what about traits? I assume going down the tools line to get power wrench, but what else?

OR is there any way of building a wrench build without turrets? I’m assuming no, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Any class can fulfill any role, some slightly more effectively than others, but the disparity isn’t as large as some would have you think.

Elementalist
Deal melee DPS= Daggers
Deal ranged DPS=Scepter (staff for artillery range)
Build tanky= Spec Earth/Water
Effectively fill a support role= Spec Earth/Water/Air

Guardian
Deal melee DPS (AOE and Single) = Hammer, GS, Mace, Sword
Deal ranged DPS (AOE and Single) = Staff, Scepter
Build tanky = Spec Valor/Honor
Effectively fill a support role = Spec Honor/Virtue

Those are just a few examples, you can do that with any class.

EDIT: Well almost, there are some exception, supporting thief for example, but ANet has stated these holes in the classes are being looked at as we speak.

I’m talking viable, though.
There is no viable ranged DPS PvP guardian build and there is no viable melee PvP ele build.

Plus with the mesmer and necro, they only have 1 melee weapon set to use, setting at a disadvantage.

If you are trying to be “tanky,” then you are playing the game wrong. Tanking is not an effective winning strategy in Guild Wars 2, and it was never meant to be. Same with pure “support.”

When will people stop thinking in terms of a holy trinity?

Tanky as in I can take a lot of a damage. As in the strategy is out lasting your opponent, not taking damage for your team.
And support as in fighting, but greatly helping your team out as you do it.

What is the Jack of all Trades class? What best fits this?

It would have to be someone that can:

Deal melee DPS (AOE and Single)
Deal ranged DPS (AOE and Single)
Build tanky
Effectively fill a support role
All for PvP AND PvE.

Either all of the above at the same time, or all of the above at separate times but still be able to do them.
…….
My 2 cents:
Some would say the guardian..but it lacks decent ranged DPS.
Some would say the engineer…but it lacks decent melee DPS.
Some would say ranger…but it can’t build very tanky – only the pet can, which doesn’t matter in PvP.
Some would say thief…but it can’t effectively be support.
Some would say ele…but it doesn’t have a viable PvP melee build.
Some would say mesmer..but it can’t build tanky and it doesn’t have a viable PvP melee build.
Some would say necro…but it doesn’t have a viable PvP melee build.

So would it be warrior?

I feel like the warrior might be the jack of all trades.

Expanding on the quarterstaff idea:

You could give it to:
Thief: 2h melee weapon
Ranger: 2h melee weapon that’s more speedy…and not a gs. (Everyone already uses GS)
Mesmer: 2nd melee weapon (so its not just swords)
Necro: 2nd melee weapon (so its not just daggers)

Then of course you could give it to warriors because they’re the weapon masters, and give it to guardians so they have a speedy 2h weapon…you could give it to the engineer as a utility staff in which things pop out the end…and you could give it to eles so they simply have a melee weapon…

And that would mean everyone gets a QS…I don’t think that’s very right, so lets just go with Theif, Ranger, Necro, and Mesmer.

As a ranger player, I’d like to point out that mainhand sword usually does more damage as a GS, but GS offers way more utility than the mainhand sword.

I see, thank you.
I’ve heard that about the Guardian too, as in the sword does more damage, but the GS offers more utility and is therefore better for PvP.

Then why is this? For both the Guardian and Ranger, the sword does more damage and the GS has more utility and is more ideal for PvP? Why is it the same?

Its fine, I guess, it’s just really dull and boring and personally…I don’t like it.

This entirely contradicts your OP. First you don’t like that GS is the DPS weapon of choice, when it’s pointed out that it’s not you don’t like that either. What exactly are you wanting out of weapons? For them all to be the same? The way most weapons are setup makes sense, some are more for control and some for DPS and some for utility and some with a mix. Personally, a large sharp blade makes pretty good sense to be the DPS weapon to me.

Haha nonono, that’s not what I’m saying at all.

I’m saying why does the same weapon do the same general thing for each class? Why is GS the melee PvP weapon for 3 different classes? Why is the sword the best melee damage-dealer for at least two of them (I don’t know about the warrior)?

It just makes for an environment without a lot of variety. Makes you feel that much more similar to the person standing next to you, even if s/he is a different class/race.

I don’t care that for each class, one weapon does more damage while one has utility and one more support etc…but I do care that it’s the same lay out for many classes.

You can see it with the staff, too. The staff is always AOE damage, with the occasional support depending on class.

The only time they’re greatly different is for things like the warrior uses 2 axes melee while the ranger uses 2 axes ranged.
But for many weapons, they’re quite similar.

And even the other way…the theif and necro are both viable (necro not so much) as melee dps in PvP…but they both use double daggers. (Or the thief can use a sword and a dagger…still a sword.)

I just wish there was more variety. Tired of using a GS to be viable, and tired of seeing a million people with GSs all the time.

I find this lame…why would all three have the same weapon as doing the most melee DPS?

Why not have one be a sword/torch…or one be a hammer…or axes…etc.

I might be nit-picky, but doesn’t it seem a bit dull?

I also wish there would be a melee staff user (kind of monk-esq). I just want to see someone flailing a staff around.

Which pre-game choices do NOT impact your story?
Ex: With human, does the specific god you choose to follow impact your story significantly?

I doubt you’ll have time to use all of them all the time. Why not use, say, your staff for ranged attacks instead of the bow?

I am under the impression that the bow and/or axe does more damage than the normal weapons when the normal weapons are buffed up by traits. (which they’re not in my build)

I’m kind of new to this, so if this is just awful, sorry!

How’s this build look? Viable? PvE? PvP?

http://www.gw2builds.org/create/bwe_1/elementalist#0.0-2.8.7.5.1-20.0.10.30.10-8.3.1.12.11.6.0

(the last arcane trait was supposed to be final shielding – create an arcane shield at 25% health)

Is there any viable build with using 4 conjure weapon abilities?

Water would be the base attunement (Constant health regen + regen from heal)

Obviously use the hammer for main dps, and many of the traits help with survivability (final shielding, earth’s embrace, 30 points in water for more health/healing)

The bow for ranged dps, (vulnerability is really good with piercing shards), because you can’t always be in ranged, and the hammer goes on cool down, so you’ll need another weapon.

Bow could be switched out for the axe.

Shield for an “Oh kitten” button and if you ever need more defense than offense, and if you run out of the bow and hammer too quickly, and you don’t want to use your normal weapon.

Shield could be switched out for axe for more constant dps (though you really shouldn’t run out between the bow and hammer..or hammer and axe)

Then the sword just because. The other elite skills could work too, but with the conjure trait it just seems like more sense.

You would build power, toughness, and vitality…but mainly power and toughness because the traits already give a lot of vitality.

I see. Thank you all very much! A few more questions:
When does the next patch come out?
How are guardians with mobility?
What about necros? I hear they have a bunch of survivability.

Hi, I’ve been playing for a while now, but I just need help figuring out a character. I’ve been studying a few in depth with all their traits, abilities, etc. But I still can’t figure it out.

I don’t want an immobile game play. I want to be able to both fill gaps and get away if I have to. But it doesn’t have to be crazy mobility.

I want 2 different kinds of builds.
1 that is mainly self buffs. Makes me naturally really strong so I can just run in there and concentrate on my weapon abilities (while continuing the self buffs).
And another that is mainly passive area/team buffs and helpfulness. So I can walk in and still fight the same way, but I’m helping everyone else out passively. This could also be things like dropping AOE things that help both me and them.

I also prefer melee, but by no means does it have to be.

Lastly, I need survivability. I don’t need to be impenetrable, but if I die in 2 shots I have a problem.

Who should I be? Please help!

You don’t need to look at the below wall of text, but it elaborates.

I looked at ranger and engineer in depth. Ranger has signets and spirits, which I like. But are there other better options? Engineer has elixirs which kinda do the same thing if I both use and throw the elixirs all the time, but I’ve noticed their regular weapons (Non-kits) not doing as much damage, so that takes away one elixir spot for a kit.
But I haven’t looked at others…are the warrior and guardian mobile? Do theives have good surviability that isn’t just stealthing all the time? Are eles, mesmers, and necros too squishy? It seems necros may not be squishy, but are they mobile and have what I’m looking for?
