How do you feel about GW2 right now?

It sucks, always did in fact, but since I have nothing else to play…

I kinda get tired to breed eggs in Pokemon Y, so here’s a brain-dead game for ya !

I still come back from time to time, since I have that masochistic pleasure of looking at that shameful “game of the year” for so many. Truly sad, but hey, that’s life for you. I want it to be a good game (not a great one, just a good one, see ?) but we all know it’s not. No matter what the devs say about it. You failed, big time, guys. Oh, sure, you’re racking up cash from fools and fan-boys (you ain’t all like that, slow down you crazy lunatics), but from a gamer’s point of view ? Nope.

Why do people stop playing GW2?

Right, as compared to most other MMOs, like say WoW, where all human warriors have the exact same stories, or better, no story at all. That’s true of probably 99% of MMOs. Characters have no personal story. This is a step forward from that.

The complaints about Trahearne running the show really blow my mind a bit. I mean people say this game didn’t keep anything from Guild Wars 1, but that was the modus operandi for pretty much ALL of Guild Wars 1. You were never doing your own thing, but someone else’s thing, even if you were the chosen. The most obvious example of this is Komir, who is the head of the Sunspears and becomes a goddess at the end. You do all the work, she gets all the credit.

It’s less like that with Trahearne, who has the wilde hunt to heal Orr. If you play a Sylvari your wylde hunt is to kill Zhaitan. Different wylde hunts. Even if you don’t play a Sylvari, Trahearne gives you plenty of credit, if you listen to what he’s saying. I think people are just used to Skyrim where you can be the head of everything all at the same time…which always rubbed me the wrong way. If I’d been able to walk up to Zhaitan and beat him with a mace and kill him, that would have likely rubbed me the wrong way too.

But yeah, the person story, as with any portion of a game, has budgetary constraints. SWTOR was the most expensive MMO ever made, and they put most of their money into cinematics and voice acting, and we all know where that went.

In a company that’s smaller with a lower budget, you can’t expect individual endings for each player and I’m not sure why anyone did. Anyone following the game would have known all roads lead to Zhaitan and that it’s in a dungeon. At least I knew that well before launch.

I just had to come back and answer that…

You mean, SWTOR, the game where we can feel like a real badkitten for real, where you truly feel like you have some power ? Some meaning ? And companions (not all of them, I admit) that matters ? Oh, and stories ! Yeah…

I have yet to see a story in GW2 beat the Imperial Agent one, or the amazing feeling I had with my sith jugg when he trashed a republic base just to see the general inside of it. By himself.

What do you get in GW2 ?

Lame dialogues.

Crappy voice acting.

One (or two) cool cinematic(s).

Characters that don’t have any importance. You just want to punch them a few thousand times in the face…with another mother****** (if you get the joke here, kudos).

Oh, and my favorite…

Dialogues scenes where I have the sudden urge of killing someone. Where characters are supposed to “feel” angry, but are just standing upright, facing each other. It’s like watching Hamlet, but with the actors having as much feelings as a brain-dead magikarp flopping around.

Not the worst story ever, per se, but let’s just say it sucks. Badly.

To be honest ? All of them. It’s an RPG, right ? Normally, you try to expand your universe as time go by if you want an interesting story…

Now, the real thing is: when will we see this ?

Probably never, seeing how Anet devs aren’t working on new stuff (not a new backpack I mean).

Just wait for the next part of Living Story ! It’ll entertain you ! …for a few hours.

erm…I HIGHLY doubt that we’ll never see these areas.

The first year, GW2 has been building a HUGE amount of resources. From here on out, they can build upon a solid foundation. And we will see some new areas in the next year (I’m thinking either the Dominion of Winds or the Magumma Wastes is next)

And to give you an idea as to how huge the world is the devs get to play with…the red square represents all of GW2 (not including Mist areas [sPvP and WvW])

Meh, I’m pessimistic about these things, but I hope that they’ll get to it eventually X)

So….you elect someone, and since you don’t like his sudden change of views and aberrent use of his power, you should let him run the show for a while ?

Guess that explain the political clusterkitten in a few countries…

Nice mindset by the way.

1. Anet in no way is ruining my day to day life, they’re not stealing from me, they do not get to fire me and they don’t send me to war.
2. You payed the money and got your enjoyment out of the game. If you haven’t played it for a certain amount of hours you can still get a refund. You don’t elect book series, game series or TV series by buying their products. You do not suddenly become a share holder of the company.

1. …good for you, I guess ? You do like taking thing literally, do you ?

2. Heh…a refund….rriiiiiiiiggggghhhhhtttt….

And electing a book…what kind of argument is that…wow…

No kitten, sherlock ?

I was just trying to say, maybe with to much sarcasm for some people, that everyone has a right to express his opinion, be it positive or not, about something he cares about. Is that too hard to get ?

Yet you are your ilk still persist on being involved with a game that you apparently can’t stand.

Well, with a smart AI, things could be interesting.

The henchmen could “learn” from your playstyle and adapt to it. Or follow a certain pattern. Or you could even configure it yourself…

Ah, but what am I saying, someone (and by this I mean a DEV) would have to work for once…ah ha…

Pffff…so much ideas, so much wasted potential.

Was it Really a Good Trade?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Machiavel.6042

So it’s been over a year. If this game had followed the same path they took in GW1, around this time we would have had a whole new expansion added to the game full of new PERMANENT content, new classes, new races, furthering the dragon story line, maybe added UW, or Cantha, or Elona.

Instead of that however, we’ve gotten a ton of gimmicky, slightly entertaining but overall underwhelming content (most of it reused with scavenger hunts, etc) that is totally removed from the main dragon plot, and injects random sub plots that are pulled out of the devs butts and are killing GW lore.

Was the living story experiment really worth it? I don’t think it was a good trade at all…

For all we know everything that has been happening could have been done by some dragon we do not know about. For all we know Scarlett could be an avatar of a dragon. Or not. Either way, not sure how this stuff is killing GW lore.

Anyways, IMO it has been a really good trade.

This would be absurd simply from the lore standpoint and would pretty much be the most direct way for GW2’s Lore Enthusiasts that Lore isn’t important in this game anymore.

Waaaaiiiiiiiittttt…. they cared ?

Huh….

Woaaaawwww…I am at a loss for words right now in front of so much originality….

I never said I wanted the bullcrap Bioware is/was making with their recent RPGs, I was talking (did you ever took the time to read ? I wonder…) about real rpgs like the MegaTen, Golden Sun, Gothic (all of them), Tales of (any of them), etc.

You know, with story, player and story depth, stuff like that ?

I don’t mind “carving” my story with other people, it’s just that, right now, it sucks. Big time.

So, yeah, if it could be like DnD, hey ! Heaven’s here boys ! I’d be happy like a child at christmas eve !

It’s not an RPG.

You play specific characters, with specific stories behind them, and all of them have the same end. Voilà.

For a real RPG, you have a backstory, there’s an interation with the rest of the world around you, you leave a mark, however small may it be (not a footprint, come on XD), and people may even start talking about that stranger helping people around (since we’re stuck with the “hero” archtype).

It COULD be classified as “RPG” if we had some basic elements…but we don’t.

For the LS comment, it should be considered as pessimism coming from me, and as such not a real comment to debate on (even though it could go on for pages, I’m sure of it).

Anet should start considering a “premium” thing, like a subscription fee that players who really like the game, and a few trinkets here and there, could buy. That way, they could probably have a more stable income in this whole affair that Guild Wars 2 is.

There’s a lot of people here on the forums that have really nice ideas, and I sure hope Anet is reading all of this. As a company (video game company, that is), being Free-to-play isn’t a model that is going really well. We all see it on the market right now, and people are getting more and more tired of it…

And, at the same time, we’re all a bunch of greedy kids playing games expecting stuff for free X)

Imo if new characters/account holders could get these new hairstyles for free, then all the people who have been playing since launch would be complaining about that. It puts ANet in a lose lose situation. I think they handled it right. No free new hairstyles for brand new characters/accounts. Everyone has to pay (except the people who get a free hairstyle kit from the 5k achieve chest, which is eventually available to everyone).

They did it before, and they’re not bankrupt right now…

But now you want to tell me that “they’ll lose a lot of money” by doing it ?

Guess they’re stupid as kitten. Must explain a lot then…

Where did I say, “they’ll lose a lot of money”. Quote me please. DON’T put words down I didn’t say.

what I SAID is that if they gave them away free to new people then the old accounts would complain about that.

OOOOooooohhh…want to play it that way, uh ? First, you’re not saying anything, you’re TYPING stuff. Second, let’s use some logic for a second here.

“Everyone has to pay”

Ok, now what happen when someone doesn’t pay you ? Think…and write it down.

Sure the people playing since lauch will complain, they always did about everything ! Why’s that ? ‘cause we’re all playing (well I should say YOU ALL ARE) the same game and we (you all) would like to be something made correctly, right ?

P.S.

I should add that the 5k chest isn’t something A LOT OF PEOPLE have. I played since beta, and I barely have more than 2,7k points. Don’t assume EVERYONE got it.

Again I didn’t type (since you are going to be weird about the word say) that everyone has the 5k chest. I typed that everyone will eventually get one.

ANet is a company. Their reason for existing is to make money which they do by selling an entertainment product. If they gave free new hair styles to new characters only then the old accounts would be massively complaining about that. And in case you didn’t know you can get these for free a couple of ways. Through exchanging gold to gems or for waiting for the 5k chest. People can do that and ANet won’t make a dime off these hair kits.

It takes a lot of time to get 5k, so it’s not tomorrow we’ll start seeing people having new hairstyles for free. Now for the conversion of gold to gems, here’s the solution for the people playing with characters already well advanced: an hour or two of gold farming in Frostgorge, and there you go ! Enough gold for the conversion, and enough gems for the hair kit ! Not to mention that some of them already had (and still “have”, even) the rewards for the 5k chest (not to mention the 10k one in some cases). I can’t really see why people with characters already made, and who wants new hairstyles, have to cry about.

They have a crap-ton of ways to make enough gold to get these gems, and even farm AP with daily and monthly reward ! What’s the trouble ? Equality, right ? Yeah…the same “equality” we keep hearing about with champ trains in low-level areas, sickening comments about “no0bs”, people complaining about PvP all the time and bashing PvE (and vice-versa). There’s no “equality” in this game. We could be nice and give a few free things such as haircuts to newbies (or new char’s).

The real problem with the new hairstyles (in my case anyway) is that they already gave us some hairstyles before, for free. Why are we paying now ?

Anet is becoming like EA more and more, and I know they want money (NcSoft does even more, with their on-going projects). Every sane person who took Economics 101 knows that a company only have one goal: money. Anet are just playing a dangerous game here. I’m telling you, one day we’ll pay for Living Story…

I do not see why it should be given for free at character selection /shrug. Getting mad at this reminds me of the several customers I had who were “disgusted” that we charged extra to hook up their DvD players and other devices to their TV, always stating to us it should be free since it is all related to their television.

I could understand being upset if it was a subscription game, but this isn’t a subscription game.

I think the difference here is that the new hairstyles were probably scraps left on some poor shmuck’s computer and got thrown into the game just for a quick buck.

And, seriously, that would have been a nice thing, to just throw such a simple thing for free, once in a while. I don’t give a rat kitten about the new dungeons, I hate the looks of the new ascended stuff, I never even bothered finishing personal story (I just got sick of it, it’s that bad).

Did you honestly expect free styles for new characters?

Considering that a new character already costs me $10 (or over 40g), yeah, I do.

You don’t need to purchase a new character. You choose to do it. Want those NEW hairstyles? then you need to CHOOSE to purchase them.

New is new. You pay for new things. Not a hard concept.

Either pony up the RL money or spend gold in-game, either way it’s not a hard decision to make.

See there’s a difference.

Why should I pay for a haircut (hairstyle if you prefer) when there’s some available already ? Now don’t get me started on “they have to make some cash” because the perfect answer will be “what about the new hairstyles we had before ? Like the Norn male ones ? Why didn’t we paid then ?” Oh, they just feel like it… that’s nice. I guess.

There’s also a difference between paying for, say, an infinite tool (which is both a skin and something useful), and a haircut that doesn’t change anything except clipping with your armor (because I can bet my kitten that clipping is going to be horrible).

So let’s start paying for stuff that isn’t necessary for gameplay !

Pay with gems for TP ! You know, everyone can walk, right ? Not fast enough ? Well…you have the choice, don’t you now ?

Pay with gems for Living Story item skins ! It’s just a skin, isn’kitten

Pay with gems for new armors ! Skins again !

Pay with gems for weapons ! Skins skins skins ! Shiny skin !

This game is looking more and more like what EA does with it’s games. Pay, for, every, kitten , thing.

It sucks.

Hey Morrigan, guess what some players were able to do in a few hours on the Sylvari forum ? And…for free !

And, yes, you see it happening a lot in the videogame industry. Ideas or projects that were left out, and that Devs bring back as “new” content when it was there all along.

I posted in that thread on the Sylvari forum- and as brilliant as the player suggestions where-and they were amazing, there is a huge difference between a doodle and finished hair in a game

If you followed the thread you would also know that the result of some of those suggestions are what you see now.

Now imagine if players could do what some of us can do in other games like Skyrim.

Make weapons or even armors from scratch, with the tools provided by the Devs themselves…

I’m not saying with the godly-overpowered some have, but just the looks…

Ah…the day when we’ll finally be able to talk freely with the Devs, this game will be awesome…

Gee, I dunno…

Making real expansions, with useful content. You know, expanding the story ? That could be a start.

Oh, even better !

You know all the noise they made about player housing and Guild Halls ? How about selling banners or decorations ideas ? Bigger Guild Halls, expansions to the Guild Hall ? Big things, that a group of player will work as a whole to get ? No ?

More weapons skins, more armor skins, services like infinite tools, permanent stuff…

You know, all the things they keep bringing back and forth ? Just add a little more variety to it.

And you, Sam. How’d you do it, hmmmm ?

All valid. But some more so than others. ANet has the metrics and the data to make the decisions about what best fills the coffers. Obviously, they feel there are potentially more people out there that’ll pay for a new hairdue then they would for a guild hall or the such…. or at least the return on them are more favorable.

How would I do it? I got not complaints with how they’re running their rodeo now… when they wanna pay me for me my ideas, then I’ll let ’em know. After all, nothing for free, right?

Well said, friend

I do not see why it should be given for free at character selection /shrug. Getting mad at this reminds me of the several customers I had who were “disgusted” that we charged extra to hook up their DvD players and other devices to their TV, always stating to us it should be free since it is all related to their television.

I could understand being upset if it was a subscription game, but this isn’t a subscription game.

I think the difference here is that the new hairstyles were probably scraps left on some poor shmuck’s computer and got thrown into the game just for a quick buck.

You have to work when you install these DVD’s, right ?

And, seriously, that would have been a nice thing, to just throw such a simple thing for free, once in a while. I don’t give a rat kitten about the new dungeons, I hate the looks of the new ascended stuff, I never even bothered finishing personal story (I just got sick of it, it’s that bad).

So, just for once, they could do a nice thing. Hairstyles, it’s not the end of the world.

Oh, wait…

They won’t. Guess why ? Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. Monnnnnnnnnneeeeeey.

scraps left over?
oh really?
Simple thing for free-
http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/c/2925339
that is one of the hairstyles-
you are welcome to do better- for free. Or otherwise

Hey Morrigan, guess what some players were able to do in a few hours on the Sylvari forum ? And…for free !

And, yes, you see it happening a lot in the videogame industry. Ideas or projects that were left out, and that Devs bring back as “new” content when it was there all along.

  • Sigh *

Well, we can’t say they’re working on anything else than temporary content, can we now ? At the speed they’re doing it, it’s impressive sure, but is it necessary ?

Sure I got imagination !

-What happened in Orr ?
-What happened with Destiny Edge ?
-What happened to our heroes after the fall of Zaitan ?
-Is Zaitan really dead ? Or was he a pawn of an even greater evil ?

Tons of ideas, but they just keep doing stuff with temporary stories that add nothing to the real one behind this game.

We were all promised a fight against dragons and all, and what do we get ? One, giant, purple-ish, dragon-lord. Evil dragon-lord might I add.

What about the others ?

The destroyers, are they high on something or what ? They could be wrecking havoc !

What about all those Risen ?

Ahh….so much possibilities….

I sure want new stuff. If it could be useful, that’d be great

Welcome to capitalism, where human greed runs everywhere, and cash is the only goal !

But going back on subject, is that really surprising ?

Really ?

Like…you could never have seen it coming, even with all the useless junk we see in the gem store and the tokens, and the skins… ?

Come on…

It has nothing to do with capitalism and there is nothing wrong with it. yes a company ties to make money and thats good, not bad. The problem here is the way they try to do that.

I did see it coming for a long time and when it was announced they had no focus on expansions it became very clear. Since then it has been one of the main thinks I been talking about on the forums.

I’m sorry, but this is EXACTLY what capitalism is all about in the end. Making money out of everything. “The problem here is the way they try to do that”, eh ?
You just said, and I quote: “It has nothing to do with capitalism and there is nothing wrong with it”, so how can you say that there’s nothing wrong with it…and then, that there’s a problem how they do it ? I mean, if it’s not wrong, what’s the problem ?

Oh, right, the fact that they’re acting like greedy people. Just like EA with Star Wars, isn’kitten Mark my words, in a not-so-distant future, we’re going to pay for even more stupid stuff that should be in the game for free…

Now, is this a good thing ? If I follow your mindset (and mine in the same way), no it isn’t. Can we do something to change this mindset ? Hard so say.

Then do not pay them with gems. Thats the nice thing about capitalism. It’s just to bad that some people do buy gems and so supporting this sort of crap and messing things up for the game and so other players.

Just don’t buy gems, get people to buy gems and all those thinks that gem-buyers get as a rewards see that as a symbol of shame.. like the mini’s and the kite of shame.

That might help. I know that as long as they make money this way they are not likely to change there tactic so make sure they don’t. It’s that easy.

Oh, I’m not buying gems for that. In fact, I stopped playing a while ago. But we are a minority, and that’s the problem. There’s too much idiots buying gems by the bucket and helping these guys with even more stupid ideas of payable content. Problem is, how do you tell the majority that this is stupid ?

Welcome to capitalism, where human greed runs everywhere, and cash is the only goal !

Ok, Karl…. How then would you propose they fund the game?

Gee, I dunno…

Is that why they are giving living story content every 2 weeks without charging me to play it? because of Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed. Monnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeey?

As fas as I can tell, them doing that stuff is doing something nice. Giving me content without charging is far far better than giving me cosmetic fluff for free and then charging for the content.

You sure are a funny guy

How great is that content ? Temporary, with a mountain of bugs and stuff we don’t care about because they’re out of ideas for real content ? Guessssssssssssssssssssss !

What about all these tokens, and RNG bullkitten we see everyday in those events ? What about ascended shinies and other junk ideas like that ? Guessssssssssssssssssss !

Good for you if you like it. I don’t.

Oh, and by the way, it’s not “something nice”. They have to keep you hooked to the game, and since it’s F2P, well they have to use certain methods. It’s not charity work. They’re giving content so the addiction stays, nothing else. It’s basic human psychology.

His arguments are bad, and he should feel bad.

“Bitting the end that feeds”, eh ? Well, like hell I’ll do it ! Specially when she wants to trim me to the skin and sell my pelt ! Pffff…

Problem is, and the guy is naive for thinking like he does, the Devs from Anet can’t talk to us, and that is a serious problem (I sure hope one of you guys are reading this right now). I know the PR department is watching veeeeeeeeeery closely on what is said in the name of Anet, and they sure don’t want the flak, but shutting down interations between players and devs is never a good thing on the long run. The only thing you’ll see is players jumping at each other’s throat, thinking they possess the one and only thruth, while the higher-ups behind this are too afraid to stop it because they might get thrown in it without help.

It’s a natural thing; there is some frustration about some things changing, and when we want to ask questions, we get nothing. It doesn’t take long for minds to go wild, and the human imagination sure is impressive sometimes. No wonder the forums can be harsh…

In all honesty, if the devs could speak openly, and tell us what they’re doing, and why they’re doing it, everything could be great ! All Anet has to do is say something along the lines of:

“This is not the general opinion of Arena Net, and we want to make sure this is only a person speaking, not the company as a whole.”

If something had to go wrong, well it’s up to the dev at fault to correct his/her mistake.

Will we see this ? Probaly not.

Well, at the same time, you have to consider the fact that the teams are rushed to get that content as fast as they can, so they don’t always (do they even ?) have the time to test it.

It’s not like Eve, where you have test servers, and the content is tested for a while.

Remember, NcSoft always is looking for money, so it’s putting a lot of pressure on Anet for making new content fast. Sad reality.

Leo, they have to keep you hooked to this game, that’s the reason for the really fast content.

You are acting like an addict in a casino; you’ll get it next time. Oh, almost got it ? I’m sure you can try a liiiiiittle harder, and then you’ll have it.

They are just appealing to that little psychological need of “doing everything I can”.

It’s like these “for a limited time only !” promotions you see everywhere. Oh, that burger might never come back ? Hmmm…wonder how it tastes…guess I’ll try it.

Same thing, but with virtual content here

Depends for who wants them.

I think it would’nt be too hard to put in by default, so when someone starts a new char, he can get it…

“Oh, but why should they do that ?” you might ask. “They’ll never make any money if they give everything away like this !”

Good point.

Now imagine if…you start a new char…and you want to give him the infinite use tools, which are soulbound (and gem store only, what a surprise !). Money here to be made.

You really want that armor for him, but you’re out of stones ? Money again !

You want to participate in temporary content (arena, SAB, etc.) ? Buy tokens !

I’m pretty sure they won’t go bankrupt by doing one tiny little nice thing once in a while, you know…

-More temporary content

- TEMPORARY ITEMSSSSSS !!!!

Yep.

Not entirely true, since the past 3 updates have had permanent additions.

OP:

It’d be cool to have new races, but every 4 months would be a ridiculous pace.

Maybe unlocking them through a story. For example, Destroyers get into Dominion of Winds, and Tengu seek help in driving them out. You succeed, you earn Tengu’s trust, Tengu becomes a playable race.

And what important content it was, wasn’kitten

Tequalt ? Oh, cool, new content…for zerg players. Awesome.

Ascended ? Oh, cool, new content…for farmers. Or show-offs.

Story ? What do you mean, “story” ?

Oh…new festivals, and stuff we don’t really care about…nice.

Yep, money, money, money…
