simplest class to play for a young kid

My 7 year old daughter plays. I use the game to teach reading and comprehension skills, math skills, and team work (especially reviving). I filter the chat so that all that shows is guild chat, which is basically me, my husband, and a few IRL friends.

She is more interested in gathering, crafting, map completion, and playing dress up than killing stuff. She likes to play Ranger and Mesmer. Mesmer because it’s “magic” and Ranger because she enjoys having pets and searching for new pets!

My bank is full of crafting material, so she can craft as she pleases. Jeweler and Taylor, so she can play dress up.

She likes to go to the cities (no bad guys) and do map completion. I"ll also buy her a bunch of dyes from the trading post so she can play dress up.

She will go out into the level 1 areas to find nodes, and look at the scenery. She loves Celadon Forrest and thinks it looks like a fairy tale. If she does battle somethings, it’s usually a mosquito, firefly, or spider.

I dropped her in Lion’s Arch yesterday and told her to get inside the cauldron. She had a blast climbing to the top and being transformed into a glowing green spider, then running around LA.

Idea to enforce more civil behavior on forums

in Suggestions

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

I suggest rewarding good behavior in addition to punishing bad…that was at least he “good” people will benefit and the “bad” people will have something to strive for. For example: I would love the ability to have an image in my signature and this might be a way to implement that. Just a random thought.

This. I used to manage forums for a game company. When I came on board the trolling and negativity was out of control. Some users were pure trolls, while others were just following the bad behavior of others. I implemented a system where staff would basically give points to every post that was constructive and helpful. It could be anything from feedback to suggestion, answering a player helping player with a thorough answer, or posting a guide or walk through. Even negative feedback could get positive points from staff as long as it was well thought out, respectful, and constructive.

When someone posted something constructive a staff member would comment in the thread praising the post (public praise). Once users acquired a certain amount of points, we would put a star in their signature.

On the flip side, the nonconstructive posts violating the rules would be removed, and the user would get negative points and a personal message explaining exactly why the post was removed. Temporary bans were implemented for repeat offenders.

It took a while, but after a few months the trolls moved on and the forums were a much happier place.

After I left the company, they went to a social media linked style forum where instead of a user name, your real name and picture were next to every post. Needless to say a wonderful community tanked very quickly and never rebuilt after that. Even the good constructive user wouldn’t use the system.

Neutrality in WvW

in Suggestions

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

I highly suspect that that making world completion include WvW is an attempt by the company to persuade PvEers to get their feet wet in WvW.

However, I do like this neutral idea. If the neutral option was implemented, one would have to choose to be neutral before entering WvW maps. The only way to get out of neutral status would be to completely leave WvW and reenter.

Neutral status could be written so that no players would render, other than maybe your home server, or even your guild/party. This way there would be no spying.

I’ve always thought that 1) there should be seperate PvE and WvW tags
2) Commander tags should be earned. I haven’t worked out all the details in my head for a good system, but it’s been brewing for a while.

I see lots of commander tags at dragon events and in LA, and I don’t recognize any of the names from WvW. So one day I asked. They said they had never set foot in WvW.

OMG you people are lazy. Firstly, just use the luck as you get it, and maybe just leave 1 as your placeholder for the next few that you get. Now if you want to talk about removing something really annoying, how about the purchase confirmation for some vendors where you can only buy 1 item at a time. “Are you sure you want to buy this?” Yes “Are you sure you want to buy this?” Yes “Are you sure you want to buy this?” Yes…OMG YES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD I NEED TO BUY 100 OF THESE!
t(>.<)t

At least with the luck it’s just a bunch of clicks without confirmation and as stated in another response you can take a bunch all at once to craft into higher amount lucks to reduce your clicking. Sorry if you have to take just a little time to travel to do that, but it’s the price for the convenience.

1) Not everyone is an artificer.
2) The open all feature suggested is intended to be a time saver.
3) It’s not just about essence of luck, it’s about all the bags/consumables. When I reach 1.5 million in karma, which is pretty regularly, I go and buy 500k worth of orrian jewlery boxes, open them all, drink all the karma, and spend back down to 1 million. Wash, rinse, repeat, until I only have 1 mil left. That’s a LOT of clicking and its time consuming.

Running champ train, Scarlett’s minions, WvW, Mad King’s labyrinth, and many other activities are all very fast paced. It is easy to accumulate large stacks of bags/consumables (like scrolls of knowledge) that need to be opened one at a time.

My question to you is, if this was implemented, would it harm your game play? My guess is no, you could still use what ever method you prefer. Would it enhance the game experience for others? Yes.

Options are good. People like options. Options make for happy players. Happy players play more, spend money, and recommend the game to others creating a sense of hype. Win win for players and ArenaNet.

Only lvl 80 in Group or leave....

I’m sorry you’ve had such a bad experience. Unfortunately people can be jerks sometimes.

On the bright side, there are players that don’t mind running dungeons with <80s.
The trick is finding a guild that is dungeon focused. A group of people that just love doing dungeons.

Some guilds will have set days/times where they do nothing but help alts and lower level players do dungeon runs. I see players using their 80s to help others, then switch to their alts and get help in return.

I consider myself a nice and social person IRL, but I like alone time and unwind time too.

When I’m not in a party, WvW, or guild events, I frequently turn my chat off and play alone. This is relaxing for me. If my guild mates need me, then know to whisper.

A few weeks ago, I was leveling a new alt. So I was running around killing everything. (It’s a frustration reliever )A friend whispered to me saying that someone was accusing me of botting in map chat. Because I was killing everything in sight and not responding to their chat I must be a bot. (facepalm)

Bots are bad, I’m not arguing that at all. But please be very certain before reporting people as bots. I would hate to see legit players have their accounts terminated unfairly.

I posted this as an answer to another question a while back, but I think the method/advice will hold true for you.

“The explorer achievements are tough because there are a few areas that don’t have POIs, vistas, skill points, etc… that counts toward regular map completion. If you have map completion for all maps in the explorer achievement, but not the achievement, then it’s probably because of this. Some are tricky to get to, and use underground entrances.

What I did was first look for areas that still looked blurry on the map. Then I would walk the edges of the map very carefully, going up into all the little nooks and crannies, caves and crevices.

Cross referencing maps help too!

Go to the wiki page for a map, and look for the areas without any map completion next to them. Click the link, and cross reference your map.

Let’s take Snowden Drifts for example.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Snowden_Drifts
You can see that there are a few that do not have map completion listed. (see attachment) Click those links, I’m using Jotun’s Vista for example, and see where the area is located on the map. (see attachment) Now look at your map and see if you see the words Jotun’s Vista. If yes, move on to the next one. If no, and the area looks shaded and not clear like the rest of the map, then that area still needs to be uncovered.

http://gw2cartographers.com/
This is also a great site to see the shape of the maps. I also used this site a good bit for world completion. Click the icons for user submitted hints; really useful on chests, vistas, and jumping puzzles. It’s also great to find locations for crafting materials (like scales and bones), and ranger pets. You can toggle the icons using the menus at the top.

Make commander tag account bound?

in Suggestions

I am all for wvw alt-friendliness. I don’t agree with OP’s idea though. The only way it would make sense was if turning on the Commander tag automatically changed your display name to your account name. That way when troll Commander Gabby decides to switch to another alt, and troll with them as the commander instead, it still says “Commander Gabby”. If OP amends this to their original submission I would support it.

This is a great solution. I know lots of good commanders that I believe should be able to switch toons (especially when doing so in support of the group) and keep their tag.

They kept track of topics like the ones the OP are referring to measure the community heartbeat. Just because you don’t see Anet addressing these suggestions, doesn’t mean that they aren’t monitoring and considering them behind the scenes.

I think the reason for so many new threads being created on the same topics over and over is due to a broken forum search.

Stop with the bikini armor

in Suggestions

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

I must point out that while the armor may be intended to attract the male audience, women are far more responsible for how the societies of many nations portray women as sexual objects. It was primarily women who fought, and who still fight to this day to have the freedom to wear anything they want. Woman didn’t want to always have to wear fully covering dresses with veils, so they fought to make those dresses shorter and shorter. They didn’t want to be forced to wear stockings, so they fought for that right, and they won that right. They fought to have the right to wear mini skirts, 2 piece bathing suits, followed then by even more revealing bikinis up to even dental floss g-string bathing suits that leave nothing to the imagination. Men may not have fought very hard against it and may have even been part of fighting for it, but women hold far more blame than men do for fighting for their own freedom to wear skimpy outfits. So it should not be a surprise or even an offense to see that game developers reflect that social trend and the freedom that woman fought so hard to attain. My point here is, please don’t make it seem like the female player base is wholly united against skimpy armor because I think you may be surprised that it probably isn’t true. I certainly don’t have the statics for this game, but somehow I seriously believe you are most likely in the extreme minority of players, both male and female, who would fight for less skimpy armor. If that happens to be the case, then I doubt this suggestion would be given much attention when there are far better suggestions to address that actually relate to improving the playability of the game beyond what it is now.

I’m female and consider myself a feminist, and I have absolutely no problem with the skimpy armor.

If someone doesn’t like the look of a specific armor, but likes the stats use transmutes to get the look you want.

Magic Find [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

In reference to:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/september-03-2013/
Speciffically -

Account-Wide Magic Find

We’re removing Magic Find as an equipment stat. Instead, your Magic Find will now be an account-wide bonus that applies to all of your characters. You can boost your account’s Magic Find using Essences of Luck, which can be earned by salvaging Fine or Masterwork items.

Many players have spent a lot of time and money to get special magic find armor and weapon sets. Some of us even did this for multiple toons.

Will there be compensation, or do we basically have to start over on the magic find front?

While I like the idea that I will be able to have magic find AND butt-kicking stats at the same time, taking away something people have worked so hard for and giving them the one fingered salute is not acceptable behavior for a game company that wants customer retention.

Scenario: A new(er) player, let’s call her Lilly, just reached lv80 on her first toon. Lilly has been saving up all of her gold since lv1 and just purchased her first rare or exotic set with matching weapons along with accessories. She went with a magic find build because sparkly things that give them surprises make her happy. Lilly is excited! Now she is broke, but that’s ok because she has a cool outfit and can earn the gold back using her new gear. Lilly is a happy player, therefore Lilly is a retained player.

Now let’s fast-forward a week or two. Lilly logs in to see that her armor, weapons, and accessories are no longer functional, or at least not as functional as they were, and there is 0 magic find on her account. Now Lilly pretty much has to start over from square 1. She feels shocked, disappointed, defeated, and angry. She starts to think that the game is just a wast of time. Lilly is not a retained player.

People play video games to be social, feel a sense of achievement, have accomplishments, and generally feel happy. When these things are taken away, player retention goes down, as does word of mouth and new customer base. The players that stick around and take the blow because they feel too invested to leave won’t be as happy, and won’t talk positively about the game to potential players.

Since I haven’t seen official word about how this issue will be dealt with (if at all), I’m holding out hope that Arenanet will do the right thing and compensate players with account MF equal to or greater than current max MF, as well as compensation to obtain new gear. I’m really upset that hours and hours of play time and gold may be completely wasted.

Mel.8769

Bottom line, it appears that anyone with really high end Magic Find sets and items is well and truly brutally screwed.

Aye. That’s how I read the article as well.

It seems, to me, that the game is moving away from a sandbox/open-world format (different styles of play, play the way you want, there is no right or wrong way to play, do what makes you happy, everyone has different goals and different ways to achieve personal goals) to a more linear play style.

Read: less choice, more force.

Guild Taxes

in Suggestions

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

I do not like the tax idea. (Who the heck likes taxes?)

Just because a handful of people would like to see a tax system, it doesn’t make it a good idea to impose onto the whole player base. Being forced to do something in a game does not make happy players. Options are good.

There is an option to deposit gold into the guild bank. If a guild wants to make tithing a requirement for their guild, that’s fine, members would have a choice to participate in that guild or not. As a guild leader, it would be very easy to see if the members are donating simply by going to the bank history tab.

Finally Understand who GW2 Demographic is!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

Today’s gaming audience is more diverse than ever. Ranging in age, sex, race, education education level, and social status. One of the beautiful, and more difficult, things that AreneNet has pulled off is options and variety, allowing GW2 to appeal to a wider audience.

One of the things I adore about this game is that I can play how I want. I don’t have to participate in every single feature. While the Super Adventure Box may be giving a wink toward gaming ancestors (Mario, Zelda, etc…), remember the game is very young and is constantly growing and evolving (ex: Living Story). Also, it’s an optional feature. Try it out, if you don’t like it, don’t play it.

From someone who has worked professionally on online games, kudos to ArenaNet for breaking the mold and honoring the games that laid the path for modern games. Without them, there would be no Guild Wars.

most fun class

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Mel.8769

Mel.8769

My advice for a new player’s first character: asura ranger.

The asura are easiest to jump with and make jumping puzzles fun, not a chore ending in rage quitting. They are also quite cute and bounce funny. :P
I think ranger is a great starting class. It’s fun to collect all the animals, and your pets are like side kicks that keep a lot of damage off of you in PvE. It’s also a very easy and fun class to play and great to get your feet wet.

I wouldn’t recommend Elemental as a first character because it take a bit of skill when done properly.

Once you get the hang of the game, you’ll kinda figure out where you want to go next as far as characters are concerned. I personally have different characters that I ring out depending on what task I want to do.

Have fun & welcome!!!
