Holosmith Sword/Pistol or Sword/Shield?

I’m personally thinking shield. I like having blocks and cc.

This is my loose plan for starting PoF on my Holo: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdAQJAsenEID1IjFJDmcBcJjFDDbMHkgWB91weYQMMAMO2LA-jBCBABA8AAg4EAMlyvEM/lieAYVCS0+D4o+DpAiYrF-e

Basically blocks and dodges and cc with melee damage to control a battlefield.

Just curious what folks are planning to run. S/P gives a close range burn and a movement rebuff, while Sword/Shield gives blocks, KB, and Daze on huge timers.

I was personally going to run Sword/Shield with Spectrum Shield and Photon Wall for some added damage nullification rather than make the mistakes I did going into HoT and getting eaten alive by the sudden increase in difficulty. Elixir a Gun was going to get the last slot for condition cleansing.

I always viewed Ranger Sword as a nimble style for alternating between dodging away from an opponent to knock him off balance, then dive in and smash his face with reckless abandon until he gets himself together and you have to dodge again. It’s how I’ve always used it, and it’s worked well for me.

If all you care about are Dungeons/Low Level Fractals, Rev’s actually a really strong choice… This is the type of content where like the single most important things are boons, power res’ing, cleaving hard in a power spec, and destroying breakbars fast. All of which Rev’s actually really good at.

Ya I love playing hammer/staff glint/Shiro in this type of pve. It feels exciting to play.

Can confirm Shiro is fun with a staff or hammer. As my own Rev is played like a goody good, I let his combat style reflect it and usually go Ventari/Glint with Hammer and Staff (occasionally swapping out the hammer if I know I won’t need melee). I spray healing pellets everywhere, block all the things, and knock enemies all over the map in my Cleric gear. It’s a lot of fun running instances.

This is a quick and dirty build designed with teamwork in mind. Most skills are made with team assistance in in mind for leaping in, restricting enemy movement, and providing condition cleanses/healing. Damage is decent, too. If you want more support and less control, toss the hammer for Scepter/Shield.

When starting Guardian, you’re going to want to focus on unlocking the Honor or Virtues trait tree first. Honor gives solid self-healing and enhanced Shout support skills, while Virtues is a useful grab-bag of traits for damage and support both. With survival traits established, it’s time to pick Zeal for added damage as your second trait line.

For weapons, I would personally keep a Staff on you at all times to help apply swiftness and might as you roam. Greatsword is also a good choice for their overall power and boost to mobility from its Skill 3. The scepter is your only ranged weapon until unlocking the Dragonhunter spec, so it’s worth keeping one around, and it pairs quite well with a focus for a general power/survival build.

I always thought Dervish traditions were absorbed by modern professions, particularly Guardians, but to a lesser extent all humans. Dervish trademarks were using enchantments for protection, Fighting with scythes, calling on the dessert sands/winds for protection, and wearing the forms of their gods in battle.

Many of these are seen in Guardians, who have been describe thusly in GW2 novels:

“It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training, wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha. A real grab bag of “you can’t hurt me”. They’re called guardians, and simply put, they mean trouble."

That all being said, Reaper’s Shroud has a number of scythe skills bearing the named of old Dervish skills.

Also, any member of the human race can now learn to use Avatar skills, available in the for, of Avatar of Melandru and Reaper of Grenth.

Mercurias.1826

I mean at 1200 Range the Engi is essentially an auto attack spammer. This is what I really hate about the class.
[…]
So like I said I wish the rifle was an effective 1200 ranged attack skill weapon other than just auto attack spamming. Not more melee skills on top of other melee skills on top of more melee skills.

Most ranged builds in this game revolve around spamming their most powerful attacks and using AA as filler. Engie is a class that splits its focus between damage and support, so a lot of its damage skills are utilities, be they kits or normal skills.

Getting angry because a weapon with solid AA, a ranged immob, a KB/Cleanse, a Jump skill, and a close range AoE simply because only one skill has a 1200 range is silly. That much range is already plenty useful. If you want a sniper built, trait for it and pick the right utilities for burst damage.

Necro is crazy survivable. If you’re going through the game sans lv 80 boost, I strongly recommend starting with Blood Magic traits. I personally went Blood/Death Soul Reaping until 80 and had a lot of fun with it.

Mercurias.1826

I prefer the Revenant the most when running solo. It’s nimble, versatile, and powerful with solid options for damage and support. Rev also works quite well on teams due to its support ability. Renegade is just icing on the cake.

Guardian has better overall protective buffs like Aegis (the big one), Protection, and Regen. It also has solid Burn damage, a minor in healing, and a Power setup that is best described as “Durable, but not massive DPS”.

Warrior is a straight damage class with a double minor in survival and support. Lots of weapons to choose from, and you’ll go GS every time because it’s basically the best weapon for burst DPS and mobility. It has a massive Health pool and some impressive support when build for it, but mostly they’re build to Greatsword at things with Might stacks until the whole map is dead and then nuking forums with rage whenever they get knocked into downed state.

I sure hope you get some responses, as I’m in a similar position: WoW veteran but that game has grown very stale, melee-oriented playstyle, recently picked this game up . I’m looking for a profession that plays something like the WoW DH: melee, highly mobile, not too squishy.

Warrior with GS.
Guardian with GS.
Ranger with GS or S/A.

Chronomancer is a surprisingly melee-focused and nimble class. It’s squishy, but in exchange for that it has a lot of mitigation tools and some serious team support. I often run mine Dual Sword mainhand and Sword/Shield offhand. Example: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQRAse8cncfCtfilfC2fCUrhlVjq+Yj2pFdLOjqocDGhAA-TByEABxv/wNK/Aw8HCPBgBUCmi6PMcSA0Q/ApAIdoF-e

Revenant is a highly mobile combatant, but it’s at its most mobile when you go Sword/Sword Herald. It’s also got solid survival and team support in the form of buffs. Example: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQRAsc8un3guNSuQ7JRboVlsP0rS4IaWJ4EdskFPFiNLjpM29LgFsdABoAA-TBCBQBhz8XK0PUhTCgEV+BgnAQ/2fQgq/oOlgkCIihWA-e

Ranger is a surprisingly nimble melee combatant, with or without pets. Example: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNEQNBMhFakQFaZxSWwgF4axQiQ1XQIcC8520HwHArwMfirTzK-TBSDABgoP4Ulgvo+jSK/2Z/BAM/JxpA4gnAApAiYrF-e

The Daredevil is a surprisingly hardy build with all of its built-in evasion and movement skills. You can go as glass as you want and it doesn’t matter very much because you can evade and block more than anything. It’s difficult to outlast in PvP unless you’re smart about it. Example: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vZAQNAW6an8lCVmiFmC+OBsPhlfCbbMFA+Pd7g0UMYeAWAbgA-TRCBQBt7gAgD1fglSQAcFAgwDAIg7PkCdDTR5XCM/RKgI2aB-e

I am one hundred percent positive the next person to post after me will tell you this, but I’ll share it anyway: These are not really meta builds. I threw them together quickly. Most of their survival comes from skills which blow or reduce damage, or grant added endurance for dodging.

Most days I run open world in HoT at full Zerk with Runes of the Ogre, Zerk Rifle for the weapon, Heal Turret for my Skill 6, Bulwark Gyro for 7, Blast Gyro for 8, Grenade Kit for 9, and either Mortar or Supply Crate for my Elite. It gets the job done in open world PvE and WvW just fine, and it’s primarily a build that stays at range with a few measured damage bursts and some surprises if enemies get in closer.

If I find myself needing less healing, I’ve got a sword and shield in my bag in place of the Staff for personal survival and extra DPS.

Tempest never really impressed me as a specialization, but I liked Druid a lot.

From what I can tell these days, Condi Druid is popular with the kiddies for its mix of sustained DPS and large healing spikes. Tempest/Ele is popular for burst DPS and support.

Soulbeast is mostly-selfish survival spec with a few nice DPS elements tossed in and a mainhand dagger which seems not to be very impressive. Their new utilities are animal Stances, and can be traited to be shared with nearby allies. Unique skills become available when merged with your pet, and when merged they have different timers than when the pet is out.

Weaver gets a sword with an extremely nimble hit-and-dodge playstyle, and will be able to use two elements at once: skills 1 and 2 being one element, skills 4 and 5 being the last element you attuned to, and skill 3 being a new dual-element skill unique to each weapon/element combination. By double-attuning or using a specific utility skill, one can still go fully one element on command. Weavers ALSO get Stance utilities, some of which look quite useful.

If you’re looking to start back up and prepare for Path of Fire, I’d focus my efforts on leveling crafts rather than gearing. That way you can craft whatever gear you decide you end up wanting. You can also run game achievement content to unlock craftless ascended gear.

Best new solo elite spec

Mercurias.1826

The neat thing about Soulbeast is that you don’t HAVE to be merged at all times. Bouncing out of the merge in order to use the pet as a tank or utilize one of its skills )like a condi cleanse or drop a combo field) seems perfectly reasonable to me. It also gets some pretty powerful Stances.

Right now I think Holosmith and Deadeye are strong contenders for solo facemurder, at least in theory. Holosmith has a lot of maneuverability on top of good damage and some solid condition cleansing, which makes it a really solid roamer. Deadeye is a spec focused on killing one thing, and only one thing, until said thing is buried. That makes it good when taking down large single target opponents, and thieves are good at running and reselecting a new target.

Mace ....

in Guardian

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

Mace is typically viewed as a defensive weapon for a Guardians due to its slower attack speed, Heal symbols, and block skill. Paired with a shield or focus, you have a lot of Block at your disposal. Trait for bonuses to blocking, aegis, and condition removal and I think you’ll find enemies will have a tough time putting you down, even in PvE. I’d probably go Mace/Shield main and Sword/Focus off to give a balanced defensive setup.

If you play mace you won’t be killing fast in PvE, so I’d get used to the thought of being support. Focus on survival, protecting allies, and applying buffs while your friends do the punching. Swap to sword now and then to blind enemies and block projectiles or melee attacks (with the focus), then go back to the mace.

You can also toss some burning in on block or in symbols for added damage, but ymmv.

Sylvaris first time in Elona

Mercurias.1826

Claiming the game is biased to one race is pretty ridiculous. Yes, HoT was extremely biased towards a sylvari storyline, but even the asura got some slight focus with Rata Novus, even if the city was wiped out long before we got there. We’ve only seen one-third of the first map of PoF, roughly, so we don’t know what other races we’ll come across besides the humans in Amnoon. I think it’s even too early to call this a human-centric expansion, even if Vabbi was mostly human in population. There are 4 other maps we’re not aware of, and we don’t even know where they all piece together.

Whats wrong with each of the Expansion packs focusing on a different race? It does honestly seem like that is what they are doing.

There’s nothing wrong with an expansion highlighting one of the races, and I never said that there was. All I said was it’s far too early to claim that Path of Fire is going to be mostly or solely human. All we know is that Amnoon is populated mostly by humans, and not a thing about any of the other maps. Perhaps there’s a lost squad of charr out near the brand. Perhaps we will find a Pale Tree somewhere in Elona (although why would be beyond me). We might even find an asura lab somewhere in the desert, although it’d most likely be an Inquest lab because that’s how these things usually end up.

These are all true, but there is a difference between possible and plausible (though, the idea of a lost charr warband in the desert is somewhat interesting) and at this time, until proven wrong, I think its fair to say that PoF is probably human centric. Also, the presence of some story elements of the other races wouldn’t necessarily invalidate the assertion of a single race being the primary thematic focus of an Xpack. Like the Rata Novus in HoT, its a bit of another race, but somewhat indirectly, within an Xpack that’s still very much a Sylvari centric story.

Rather than being human-centric, I see this expansion as being an exploration of Guild Wars 1 lore, particularly the end of Prophecies and Nightfall. Most of GW2 is based on the GW1 Expac, Eye of the North, which was the first expansion that included races other than humans. Even then, those races weren’t playable. As this expansion moves deeper into the world’s lore, there’s going to be a lot of human focus simply because that’s what the lore was originally about.

So it’s less “Hey this is all about humans” and more about “Hey this is all about Elena, the Crystal Desert, and the Gods. And oh yeah have a giant bunny mount.”

Well, I can’t say that I agree with that view insofar as it’d be “Elona, GW1 and the Six Gods rather than Humans” when it to me would be “Elona, GW1, The Six And Humans”. But honestly none of this is written in stone and if that’s how you’d prefer to think of it, I won’t stop you.

To be fair, it would be difficult to stop me from thinking things. Unless you have some sort of mind-control ray.

…You don’t have one of those, right?

Supply Crate is very nice for that. Time it right and you can use Heal Turret’s F1 skill for a Heal blast combo with Supply Crate for a nice little combo, and then overcharge the Supply Crate’s own Heal Turret before detonating for another Heal burst.

Shield 4 can be double-tapped to burst off of a water field, too,, and both Flamethrower AND Elixir Gun have Burst Finishers, and on it goes. It’s an easy way to splash some heals around.

Folks are going to make their characters how they like them to be. Some people view it as a highly personal process, making their own digital avatar in the game. Others will make a charr with a hot pink mane and the frilliest dress they can find. It’s a game, and people play it differently. Ultimately it doesn’t matter except to the person playing their particular character.

What class to embark on PoF with?

Mercurias.1826

Here’s the thing about GW2: You can do most things with most classes, but people will get upset and boot you on PUGs unless you use one of the proven cookie-cutter builds on Metabattle. Find friends who don’t care about the meta and you’re fine.

That being said, it looks like you’re wanting something that can:
-Go Fast
-Provide acceptable support for Fractals/Raids while maintaining solid DPS
-Not die when slapped with a wet noodle in WvW

Elementalist is one of the strongest buffers in the game, and its DPS is quite nice when built properly. It also has a number of movement-boosting skills for crossing the open world, and can be quite survivable when geared and traited for WvW roaming. If you want to cut down on gear, grab a general-use Celestial set with boon duration Sigils and you should be able to handle most of the game in most any trait configuration you need. Also Weaver looks awesome in a way Tempest never really did for me.

Mesmer is also a strong contender for multipurpose character. It’s a strong solo roamer when played right, offers a strong support spec for Raids/Fractals with Chronomancer, and has a pretty good amount of survival options when solo. I had a lot of fun running HoT content with my Chrono, and I’m holding out that Mirage is going to be pretty fun once it’s tweaked just a hair and the community learns how to exploit it.

I’m personally going to main Engineer and Guardian this time around, because I love the concepts behind Holosmith and Firebrand and will enjoy playing them regardless of their place in the game’s power hierarchy. Firebrand looks like an axe-wielding, fire-blasting, quickness-inducing scholar-knight with a deep tie to lore. Holosmith makes your Engineer into a supercharged, wire-fighting kung-fu swordmaster with weapons literally made out of sun-stuff. Those are objectively pretty darned cool.

You may also have an easier time with slower characters soon. I haven’t had a chance to play with Mounts yet, but if they sufficiently bump your speed when going from place to place, then hey- All you have to care about is combat.

Think of it this way. Engineer cannot swap weapons and neither can Elementalists. Imagine and Ele with only one Attunement. Similar idea with Engineer. You don’t need to use kits, but at least one is a good idea. Otherwise you’ll spend a lot of time waiting for cooldowns.

Yup, though I’m a little sad there isn’t more use out of the Tool and Bomb Kits. You basically have to build for them if you want to use them, though with Holosmith giving even more of a melee focus than Scrapper, there is going to be more use out of them.

I figure the kits we’ll see the most use out of with the Holosmith are those that can apply Conditions like Blind and Cripple, even in power builds, plus the Elixir gun for mobility and the Elixir X + Acid Bomb healsplosion. Likewise we should see more use out of Slick Shoes in PvE/PvE. On a Scrapper it was super nice. On the much more nimble Holosmith there will be a lore more attacks you can squeeze in.

You can level with whatever, typically. If you want to level as a Condi damage Rev, you’ll be using Mace and Axe with whatever you feel, like on the offhand.

When picking up skills, you’ll want to acquire the full tree for Demon and Assassin Stances first. Demon is the Condi damage stance, and Assassin focuses on agility and rapid attacks. These will serve you best for condition damage.

Pick the Corruption Trait Line first, then Devastation, then Invocation. Corruption benefits Condi damage, while Devastation boosts dual wielding. Lastly, nab Invocation for bonuses relations around Fury. Those’ll get you to 80.

How much kit swapping is there?

Hurts mine, too. I don’t know that I’ve taken the Grenade Kit off my bar in over a year.

I use Bulwark and Blast gyros on my PvE open world rifle build. They work well for what I need them to do, but I tend not to think of them as gamechangers.

Ele and Engie probably have the highest difficulty curve in the game. They require a lot of active movement and knowledge of your class, your build, and appropriate gear. In return, they have versatility and survivability other builds would kill for.

I popped into HoT with my Elementalist to test. My old build is extremely outdated, but I could still blast things well enough to handle combat with my old Cleric’s gear.

Most versatile class

Right now, I’d say that the most versatile class in the game is the Mesmer. It’s highly sought after for most content due to its strong support options, and a really good Mes is a pain to take down in PvP with all the debilitation and interrupt it can throw around. Mirage looks like it’ll be a more aggressive spec focusing on putting constant pressure on enemies while being difficult to hit.

As mentioned before, Elementalist is also super-versatile, but it takes a lot of work to master the class due to the huge range of gameplay styles available depending on the situation. You also may want to keep an eye on the Engineer’s Holosmith spec. I hear good things.
