[PvE] Why is Eng the least played profession?

Mercurias.1826

Even though my pve main is an engi, it honestly doesn’t ‘show off’ as well as other professions. Nor does it mentally excite with the whole ‘dressing up a character to roleplay to oneself’ aspect.

I kind of disagree with both of those. Engie is one of the most visually entertaining classes in the game, with a combination of gadgets, gizmos, and gew-gaws that range from the comical to the…Man I can’t think of the right word other than “action-movie cool” that won’t get me censored. DPS-wise it’s much more difficult to play, but a good engineer In PvE is both highly survivable and deals a lot of damage.

And as an admitted RPer, my engie character is a lot of fun to roleplay. He’s a former Vigil Tactitian who quit the order due to rumors of unrest at home, and is both a believer in science as well as a devout follower of the Six (in contrast to the strong atheist bent to most human RP characters). He considers the inspiration for his inventions to be its own kind of magic, and a gift from the gods. He’s also a little insane after someone drugged him with hallucinogens and left him in a box for days.

Condi PvE Flamescrapper Build Critique

Mercurias.1826

Just pushed my newly minted scrapper into HoT, and I was hoping to run something moderately survivable with a permanent movement speed boost and decent-ish damage.

This is what I came up with for a condi build, and I was wondering if something could be done to bump the damage without making it any more glassy: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vdEQJAqalUUhatY7WwqKw6FL3FFdqH7zOYD+gBQ4EGQZGA-TRiAABXoEMI1fgZ/BoPhAA8AAkRPhAHIAHM/BlyPSBAx0I-e

Mercurias.1826

What if Ventari gave you a bundle?

Then you would lose the tablet range as well as your weapon skills, meaning you would lose fifteen skills (ten weapon set skills and a set of utilities) to gain five, which kind of strikes me as a terrible idea.

Ventari is also one of the most powerful ranged blocks Of any class, and while it’s uses are a bit niche and certainly not part of the narrow raid meta, the vast majority of the game doesn’t fall into that category either.

Why not just request the devs bump the heal numbers a touch and see if it performs well?

Power build for Reaper with Shouts and GS? :)

Mercurias.1826

Here is my own Power GS Shout Reaper, which I personally use for solo and team open world PvE. I ran it the whole way through HoT and found it to be both extremely forgiving for survival while packing a pretty solid punch from gratuitous and repeated might stacking, which helps offset my choice of Runes.

Mercurias.1826

I swap pets around all the time, and I have a preference for birds normally, so I was just a teensy bit sad we didn’t get more pets who get a lot of flight time.

The HoT pets are interesting, and some of them are downright preferable to the older pets, like the Tiger when it comes to Remorseless builds over the red Moa or the Bristleback when you want a pet with ranged damage over a devourer. While I wish there were a few new support-based pets (the fern hound is a useful little bugger), I’m pretty happy with what we got.

I hope we get more at some point, however. One of the best parts of playing a ranger is running around and gathering pets like a Pokemon trainer.

What do you like about Ranger?

in Ranger

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

Because I’m an RPer, and my Ranger is a fun character to play. He’s a quiet, peace-loving, well-meaning, naive dingbat who went out into the world to try and do good, only to realize that good intentions are much harder to make into good actions than they really should be.

Because I love being able to mix and match a wide variety of traits, weapons, and pets for a wide variety of combat scenarios. Seriously, most of our traits aren’t much to write home about because there is so MUCH Rangers can be specc’d to do, so they have to be somewhat generalized.

Because I actually REALLY LIKE Druid staff. It works well paired to longbow for pure ranged combat, or as a solid defensive kiting weapon in its own right.

Because the axe mainhand is a lot of fun to use with combo fields for projectile finishers.

Because traps are still kind of fun.

Not to sound disrespectful, but I think you’ll find you can play very tanky on a full glass Revenant when you use the shield, Glint, and either Shiro or Jalis. Shiro has a lot of evasion to put to work, and Jalis has a flat damage reduction toggle skill which works as long as you’re in an open enough space for the hammers to not disappear.

The way these legends are situated, I’d honestly expect the next legend to be Massive HoT Spoilers here, be warnedTrehearne. After all, he helped revitalize a fallen, currupted continent, then also coordinated and led an army that killed an Elder Dragon, which is something both Glint and Jalis became legends for TRYING EPICALLY to do, but ultimately failing. At the end, he then gave his life to ensure the brain death of a SECOND Elder Dragon. From a lore standpoint, he died as one of the single most influential heroes in Tyria's entire history, if not THE most influential. He was literally instrumental in finally breaking a cycle of destruction and recreation lasting longer than anyone knows. That...Is pretty legendary, and with his time using Caladbolg, Imwould assume you would get a greatsword. Also, I'm reasonably sure Braham burned Ehr's body. She's gone forever. I like the thing. It’s thematic, and in PvP it’s a big glowing beacon that says, “I am obviously running Glint right now, so everyone can know what to expect out of me”, which is to see them swap to something else when they REALLY want to turn dangerous, be it Mallyx or Shiro. The second you see the dragon spotlight go is when you get out of range and force them to use either the hammer or burn up their alt legend’s energy and boons chasing you.

What I basically am seeing and hearing right now is that people are mad when they get mowed down by a skill people are apparently already predicting?

And one person actually expressed outrage at being hit too hard and continued on to say “and I don’t have any blocks on my engie build”.

And here I was just stepping to the side and avoiding it entirely.

Groups in coordinated WvW are going to work together in order to outplay you. Same with SPvP. The way I see it, taking a CoRuin in the face is just like walking into any other avoidable ranged AoE.

If anything, in terms of nerfs, I’d possibly talk about slowing it down rather than fiddling with the damage numbers.

No, it’s hilarious! You guys look like KungkittenPanda when you do it, and I laugh too hard when I see it to ever want it to change.

As for the sword AA, for a while I liked it for a hit and fade playstyle to burn quickness in melee and evade when someone gets in my face. The dagger offhand has a pretty substantial cripple and an evade, which help for that.

Normally I began a retreat by untargetting after two sword hits and sailing away through the air, then you 180, use sword 2, use dagger 5, untarget, and use sword 2 again to sail off in a direction they don’t expect so you can buy time to get back to ranged and plug them a few times while they’re limping after you.

I am…absolutely…livid. Alright, this is my first time even trying a revenant. I wasted all of my tomes, a scroll of exp, gold to gear it, and two makeover kits. Why? I wanted this to be a RP character, while maybe playing with the class itself in PvE. As a roleplayer, I can not roleplay this character when my UI is flaming colors in any stance, as well as the constant bright glow on the character’s arms. Why is there no option to toggle it on/off? Or why doesn’t it stop out of combat? It’s such a pointless and annoying effect. Even if I wasn’t a roleplayer, how is having your hotbar and character constantly glowing helpful in any way? It seems distracting, at least to me. I can’t be the only person annoyed by this.

Ive reported poeple for wearing GS in pvp.

Im not only one, others have also noticed that they must keep their GS hidden at start of match or team will be demoralized and afk.

Sound like great peeps.

Sounds like they’re the sort of people I wouldn’t want to deal with anyway.

GS is a pretty great Power weapon for PvE, but it plays more like a Hammer than any other class’s version of the greatsword in terms of speed, and in PvP and WvW that can be a big problem. Personally, since I run a lot of PvE, I love the thing. I tend not to use it in PvP or WvW unless it involves breaking fortifications or something.

Duelist or Domination?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

As a personal preference, I would go Duelist because I have an easier time in GW2 when it comes to controlling close/mid-range combat than I do when it comes to kiting continuously and because it would allow me to use shatters more frequently. Personally, I find it a more forgiving playstyle.

Running a lot of PvP can drop you tomes of knowledge, which helps a good bit as far as leveling goes. Also, remember to keep up to date on your story quests as well as use food and other exp boosting items. Running the story mode dungeons, at least, is probably worth the Exp when done once.

Hopefully this helps somewhat.

Mercurias.1826

If you like the Ranger, it’s a class with a lot of versatility, and skillful use of the pet can make you a great tactical solo player, especially with the ranged combat options available. I’ve seen some very skilled rangers do impressive things in PvP.

It very much is a jack of all trades class which gains substantial healing ability in HoT with Druid. It has the second-most weapons available in the game (minus warrior), swappable pets selectable from a range of options for a massive number of scenarios, and it’s traits all offer something decent. Druid offers you MORE ranged skills, control, and a massive amount of healing potential to call upon when you really need it.

In other words, yes it’s viable, but it isn’t a powerhouse. If you just have a lot of compatibility with the class, you can do more with it than people think, and that will work in your favor.

Mercurias.1826

There we going to be a lot of meta players who, after finishing up getting their mistward armor and letting the novelty of Herald wear off, will go try out other classes. It’s how things go. I’m the same, since I have Reaper, Chronomancer, Herald, and am working on the others as the spirit moves me. After Christmas, I bet we’ll have a small, temporary surge in Revenants as people get the expac as a present.

In team PvE and Dungeons, I do tend to run with Glint/Shiro quite often, or Mallyx if I think I’m going to have to boon strip or deal with condis, because I know it’s what is expected of me and I’m usually good about being a team player.

When I’m running solo, however, I like to run Ventari with staff, Hammer for ranged, and just add Glint buffs to a silly, but fun, tablet tank build with spammable AoE blinds, perma protect/regen in combat and a constant spray of enough little healing Power Pellets and Fragments that it’s both amusing to play and very difficult to die. Offense-wise, the staff isn’t impressive unless I’m using 5 and the Ventari elite to smash defiance bars, but it’s a FUN weapon to me, like the hammer, and I enjoy it.

Ha ha ha ha what?

Why does the skill 4 do worse damage than Skill 1 with the same range and no effects, yet cost 6 initiative?

And why would anyone give that much Fear to a single weapon or class, especially one which is already the best at evasion? Thieves don’t get much CC because thre already so mobile it would be overkill.

Also, why would anyone give thieves a rifle? That’s like demanding an automatic win button with the way initiative works unless the skills are so weak that thieves would throw a tantrum about their low damage and throw their new toy away like a spoiled kid who got the wrong color iPad.

Frankly, I don’t know what weapon would even fit another thief ES. Longbow, probably, or maybe a mace for quick, dirty interrupt builds.

Tweaked it a bit. The runes of strength are fancy, but expensive.

Sword/Shield sigils were swapped to Sigils of Force and Strength in order to help you keep stacking might and deal more damage. The vampiric runes tend to…Not be so grand due to their recharge times. The hammer sigils went to Force and Frailty, which will help it trigger the effects in the Devastation line,

Invocation was switched around to Incensed Repercussion, Incensed Response, and Roiling Mists.

Devastation was changed to Vicious Lacerations, Assassin’s Presence, and Swift Termination.

Changed Herald to Hardening Presence, Shared Empowerment, and Elder’s Force.

Overall, this will give more Might, more damage, and compatible survivability.

Let's discuss gear for power necro

in Necromancer

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

I just go full zerker stats. With Rise and the Shroud together your overall survivability is higher than anything else I’ve played in the game. I use Runes of the Traveler for the permanent movement boost on my Necro’s armor.

I use a Chilling Victory/Blighter’s Boon build with that setup. The silly amounts of chill and might from it mean that the shroud is rarely down for long in combat, and when it IS down, I have plenty of tools to wipe out masses of things without difficulty. It’s good for PvE, and in PvP/WvW I’ve had some small success which I attribute more to the other players being even worse at PvP/WvW than I am rather than anything to do with my gear.

My initial feelings on necro

in Necromancer

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

My Necro often used dagger and blood magic for speed boost while running about to level.

Dagger also had some serious damage, especially when I ran Wells traits to drain and harm. If I couldn’t handle a fight with blood magic and dagger, then I could go full MM and sustain my way through things.

When HoT came out, I strapped runes of the Traveler onto my zerker gear. I have enough damage and survivability that I honestly don’t care if it’s the most mathematically superior gearing setup. I have my own perma swift with two HP bars, a 50% damage reduction button, chills out the yin-yang, fast accumulation of life force, and an easy 20-25 stacks of might.

Doesn’t really feel slow to me, but ymmv

Typically you’ll want to go Berserker/Assassin for gear. Chronomancer’s runes are great for solo play, but in teams you might want something with boon duration.

Power builds are overwhelmingly better than conditions in PvE. Most Mesmer conditions are PVP oriented.

Most phantasm builds do well in big events and raids.

Sword/Sword and Sword/Shield work very well, but I would definitely keep a focus around for reflecting.

Greatsword is great for ranged.

Staff’s phantasm does its best damage against open world champion sorts due to how many conditions can accumulate.

[PvE] Why is Eng the least played profession?

in Engineer

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

Mostly because it’s a hard class to really master and, for most of the game, the engie hasn’t had the payoff which made it feel worth the time it takes to learn it.

Also, when Engies WERE on top of the meta, it was usually for just one or two builds (Anyone remember the ridiculously powerful Alchemy builds?) rather than for overall being a solid class.

Lastly, people always got upset at how underwhelming Turrets were, as well as how easy they were to kill.

Revenant: The Class that will never fit in

in Revenant

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

1. Because you already effectively have double the utilities in combat that most other classes have. You get your customization from what legends you use, and most of their skills are already very powerful.

As for your example claiming that Revs are too predictable against good players? Be less predictable. Also, why would you just sit there and attack a blocking person while draining away your energy with Impossible Odds? Toggle that thing off until their block skill runs out and then engage again. Impossible Odds has a crazy short recharge time. You can actually BUILD UP energy for a bit waiting for the enemy to run out of block.

2) I also really want to have Signet of Humility from Mesmer as my elite at all times. It is an amazing break bar skill, and it also turns your enemy into a Moa, which I still find hilarious. Perhaps not surprisingly, unless you aren’t very bright, my wish isn’t granted. I content myself with the numerous other strong bar breaking skills Recenants have. You can easily do the same. As powerful as Recenants are, you’re fine. If this upsets you, there are a lot of other classes to play which include racials.

3: Because you don’t need it. Every legend has a trait line which gives strong synergy, like Salvation with Centaur or Herald with Dragon. Not only that, but an argument can be made that people would call Boon Duration our unofficial class trait with as much as it does for Revenants. This class is powerful enough without a second required-slot specification after Herald. It actually gives Revenants more room to vary their builds.

Try both and keep the one you like best.

I personally have a build similar to this concept. I use Staff and Sword/Shield or Hammer, with Cleric’s Gear over Apothecary or Minstrel, because I think I get more out of Power gear than Condi or Boons, and even with a heal focus its good to have enough damage to help out the team in a pinch.

My build here. http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlUQJAWinnN2gSyJvQRNlbosoyPU4U5IKIs8EllZlRNgEaYNjOKxe6r3G-TRiEABJcBAES5HpKBZa/hZU/R4DBAAm/a/JAQiuASB43eL-e

It’s a lot of fun for open world and trolling in PvP with knock downs and ranged blocking, and the constant AoE blinds, along with the steady healing, mean I’ve been able to even solo some of the kitten ier champs.

Hope this helps in some way. Have fun out there!

Uh, you buy the skills with hero points in PvE. In PvP, they should already be unlocked. If you might want to read through a tutorial some and get a feel for Rev/Herald, because each stance only has one heal, three utilities, and one elite. You swap stances to change out skills.

I have no idea who Brazil is, but if you post the build then we might be able to have some kind of idea where you’re confused other than at square one.

How do you guys deal with events in HoT?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Mercurias.1826

Mercurias.1826

In general, GS for tagging, burst, AoE, Sword for dps and lol25%evadeuptime, Focus for swiftness or Shield for group buffs/skipping mobs that can actually hurt you. Mantra of Pain+Restorative Mantras gives good sustain and AoE tagging when needed. Use as much zerker/assassin gear as you can survive in, it increases your ability to tag mobs and the occasional death will teach you how to better use Mesmer’s plentiful active defenses.

Learn which mobs are reasonably safe to melee, that fixes the well issue since you drop them at both yourself and the enemy. Eternity and Precognition always go on top of allies you expect to get hit, Calamity and Gravity always go on enemies. Action and Recall technically affect both friend and foe equally, but low uptime of chill/slow rarely matters. Especially if you have them traited, drop those on your most damaging allies (those should be melee anyway most of the time) unless you need them right now for a specific breakbar.

When running wells F5 is fairly easy to use: get 3 illusions up ASAP, hit F5, cast everything starting with TW, cast everything again EXCEPT TW once F5 ends. Recast all wells once more (Calamity 2x), then wait for F5 and all wells to come up again, repeat. Only cast TW outside of F5 if you need to finish off a boss extremely quickly and no more difficult encounter will pop up in the next 2-3 minutes, as it has a longer cooldown than F5 itself.

This is solid and succinct advice. You win the thread, sir or madam.

Personally, I tend to run Sword/Sword and Sword/Shield with Well of Calamity, Well of Recall, Mimic, Well of Eternity, and Time Warp. It’s hardly meta, but rapid shattering with lots of quickness, Alarcity, and well spamming works out fairly okay with all of the survival Mesmers can pull off.

Your grand theory is that the entire development team in charge of keeping the game balanced is, potentially subconsciously, attacking only one class?

Man, there are some people who just aren’t satisfied with tin foil hats, so they wear their pants on their heads too so the whole world knows that it’s dealing with.

Did you ever, perhaps, consider that those were needed balancing nerfs? Druids are still massively powerful healers and support characters. They aren’t designed to be part of the meta community’s silly DPS wars. If you want a character with that kind of competitive stance, then go play a Revenant.

Seriously, everyone crying into their chereos over not having fun with their classes in this game should just switch out until they’re happy. This isn’t complicated.

Are Chronomancers Any Good?

Chronomancers significantly buff both their party and themselves, and while their damage isn’t competing for the highest tier, it is very good. Given how much quickness a Chrono can apply, it would HAVE to be. Chronos also have additional survival and protection skills, and can still do everything else that Mesmers do. Oh, and they have perma-swift as a minor trait.

They’re really, really strong right now, and personally I find them a blast to play.

They take more finesse to play than the usual Warriors, Heralds, Guardians, and so forth, but I still believe they’re viable as well as fun with unique advantages to offer teams.

They’re worth maining, I’d say.

Personally, I like to keep dual swords, sword/shield, the healing well, two utility wells, Mimic, and Time Warp when I’m with teams. Mimic on a 66% reduced recharge is a very useful thing to keep around.

Suggestion: Ventari stance

The summon time on the tablet is negligible. Hotkey it to a mouse button for fast summoning and steering and it’s actually much more versatile than if it trailed behind you with all of the AI pathing issues which would invariably ensue.

Also, have you looked at some of the Rev “On Heal” traits? Moving the tablet around can be a strong buff/debuff, heal, especially if you move it on cooldown. Honestly, I would be all the way for removing the animation, but that’s because I like the thought of an uninterruptable PBAoE Blind which grants you Protect and drops an energy fragment which heals for 1.6k every 2.25 seconds.

And the cast time is only a quarter of a second.

I frankly like Ventari, but I think it’s a niche skill, and with everything else that Revenants can do VERY well, I’m tempted to let it just stay niche.

Done playing Rev.

Yeah I went into PvP on a Rev after having played a combined 3 matches since 2012. I managed to handle myself just fine in any 1v1 situation, and in group situations I either hammer spammed at range or bunkered with the sword and shield, and honestly I didn’t even have a lot of trouble with Condi builds because I could drop them so quickly.

If anything, Rev probably needs a nerf. I think our friend the OP just needs some practice time, a guide or three, and take a much needed chill pill.

am I the only one that finds revs squishy?

Revenants have a lower HP pool compared to Warriors and aren’t as survival and protection focused as the Guardian. The Retribution and Herald Trait Lines can help with this significantly, however, as can the Herald shield and the sword offhand block. Would also recommend using the Jalis (Dwarf) Legendary Stance, which has the Whirling Hammers skill to reduce damage by (I believe, but didn’t verify) 20%. Glint also offer some strong survival with its damage converting heal and a straight toggle that gives protection.

I actually find Revenants to be fairly sturdy in practice. They have two heals, so if you’re in a bad spot you can always use one, stance change, and use the other when all else fails.

If you’re interested in an extremely sturdy open world build and aren’t picky about damage, I actually took this build all the way to 80 on a second “for funsies” leveling build. http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlUQJAWinXNmNSqJzJR/kNlsgyoS4Q5UJYrMskFOFR91tdtBGkY94yqA-TRSBABWcBAeS5XsKBdZ/BgU/55DBQDm/A4JAEjuASBYxYA-e

For traits, I first got Salvation, then Retribution, and finally Destruction for some added damage. This build shines on sustain, with Ventari’s Tablet causing an AoE blind around you whenever you move it, steady health recovery from the staff orbs/tablet healing, and CC from the staff 5/ hammer 5/Ventari Elite. When swapping to Jalis, you have a 50% damage reduction skill which dazed. a bigger spike heal (which will AoE blind), and Whirling Hammers for that 20% reduction and a bit of extra damage. Your traits give some significant additional protections by enhancing Ventari’s Tablet, the staff, and giving you a touch of Weakness on hit. You can cleanse conditions like crazy, and when you dodge you gain stability.

Ranged, just spam hammer hits, use the hammer 4 skill for a 6 second projectile block, and use the tablet’s ranged block as needed. Easy peasy. It isn’t a DPS monster, but it’s survivable and durable to the point of excess and handles most all of PvE leveling and open world exploration without problems. To be further supportive, swap out Destruction for Invocation and get traits for cleansing conditions and amping healing power. Change out Destruction/Invocation and Jalis for Herald and Glint at level 80 and gain both DPS and support strength.

Have you looked at the other class forums?

First, Druid needed the nerfs. You can have your opinions, but there have long been numerous balancing issues with the Ranger which repeatedly end up with it swinging between being overly powerful and slightly underperforming in nearly every aspect of the game.

The nerfs aren’t the developers attacking your class of choice out of some form of maliciousness, negligence, or apathy. Their jobs are to make the class fun to play. Thinking it is a little bit…Not so bright. Shouting it on the official forums where they can see it makes you look like a dim headed, self-entitled, whiny dingbat.

Seriously, why keep playing if you’re so salty?
