I recently made my 77th Mystic Clover. Before starting, I decided to keep a log of every attempt and the dates of combination. I’m not sure who this will interest, but I figured if nothing else it might be informative to someone trying to figure out the odds.

Its pretty long, so instead of making a gigantic post here I’ll just link to a pastebin:
http://pastebin.com/VtQkEeWZ

I never attempted the 10-clover recipe. These were all 1-clover attempts.

One thing I found very interesting was how streaky it was. 3-in-a-row was so common that I often expected a second and third clover after just one. “Clusters” of clovers with long stretches devoid of clovers was also common. I’m bad at math and statistics so I’ll just leave the data here and see if anyone has anything interesting to say about it.

Something going up ~5s over a period of several weeks is not manipulation. It’s a natural price shift in response to supply and demand.

There are manipulated items on the TP, but T6 isn’t one of them. You shouldn’t be looking at stuff traded thousands of times on a daily basis, you should look at the high end items with 2 listings for 300g that magically reappear at 600g the next day.

Things not purchasable with gold:
Karma
World Completion
Dungeon tokens
Badges of Honor
Skill Points

Ok. You’re right, those are not purchasable with gold. Let’s look at what is:

Precursor weapon
Icy runestones
Both 400 crafting skills
The recipes for the crafting gifts
The crafting gift (metal/wood)
Crafted lodestone gift
Ectos and Mystic Coins for clovers (still need karma and SPs)
250 ectos for Gift of Fortune
All components of Gift of Magic
All components of Gift of Might

Imagine all those parts were removed. They are for some people, such as TP flippers or those rich enough IRL to punch in their CC and buy a thousand gold. Going down the list of legendary components, about 66-75% of the process is simply, flat-out buyable. Of course, the end product is also buyable, which I also have a problem with.

Legendaries are just a show of coin now. Spend a few weeks standing at a trading post vendor, you get a legendary.

Mad Clock Tower, THAT was an achievement

I couldn’t agree more.

Something “legendary” or “epic” should be given out for an actual gameplay accomplishment, not for amassing a hoard of gold. Put in more stuff like that… challenging gameplay… and put legendary components in them.

Not that they’d all have to be Jumping Puzzles. How about some very hard story missions or something? Make people solo champions, or sneak through a huge dungeon full of patrolling silver mobs. Something that takes actual effort, skill, preparation. Not this grind-1000-gold treadmill.

Mira.4071

No. There’s nothing epic about them at all. And I say this as someone who’s halfway done with one. It’s a boring, grindy slog, and there’s no fun in it whatsoever except for the expectation that one day you’ll be done and have something unique.

I’m going to briefly go over each segment of the legendary process and explain why I think its either good or bad.

Precursor Weapon – Neat idea but bad implementation. Allowing players to have a sense of upgrading an existing weapon is cool, but the fact that these weapons are ultra rare and ultra expensive is not good. It doesn’t help that there is no legitimate way to “farm” one up, rather you must dump potentially hundreds of gold into the Mystic Forge and pray to whatever deity you believe in.

Icy Runestones – Not a bad idea really, having some gold cost is OK, and its better that its an NPC-bought item that will not inflate (making this purchase easier over time)

Gift of Metal/Wood/Energy – These are fine. Crafting materials are not super scarce but getting 250 stacks of them can still take a dedicated effort.

Secondary gift requiring lodestones – TERRIBLE. Lodestone drop rates are too slim and their prices are too high. This is a blatantly obvious “buy gold or farm forever” step. Having arbitrary secondary items like Silver Doubloons that have jacked up prices solely due to their use as legendary components is even worse.

77 Mystic Clovers – Bad. Randomness is never a fun idea in crafting. Ever. Making someone craft almost 100 random-chance items with a high materials cost is ridiculous. At the very, very least they should have offered a 100% recipe for 3x the mats . Luck should not be a factor. And yes I know its called the gift of “fortune”, the design still sucks.

250 ectos – A good choice. Ectos are in high demand by all players so this is one of those long-term farm items, but they are generally acquired by all high level players no matter what they are doing. You don’t have to go out of your way to get ectos, like with lodestones, they just flow naturally.

Gift of Might & Magic – Another blatant “buy gold please” item. 250 of every T6 material? That’s never going to happen, not with DRs on farming events and spiking prices of these T6 mats. Who’s going to actually generate these mats? Botters are, and you’re going to buy from them whether you farmed that gold yourself or bought it. A bad design choice especially given the game’s anti-farm DRs.

Bloodstone Shard – This choice is fine, in fact I might even suggest that the skill point cost on the Shard should be even higher as 200 is very low hanging fruit.

Obsidian Shards – Another fine choice, karma is accrued naturally without needing to be farmed intensely. Further sources of shards are being added to the game regularly which only makes this already good decision even better (but why aren’t other legendary components getting the same treatment? Why no Fractal Relic or Laurel Lodestones?)

Gift of Exploration – Probably the only thing in the Legendary recipe that actually feels like an accomplishment.

Gift of Battle – I get that they want you to participate in “all areas” of the game, but 500 badges is ridiculous. Most people will not get that amount without a serious dedication to WvW, not everyone likes WvW. You can do WvW for 2 hours and walk away with 2 badges. Of course like many other Legendary components, luck factors in, but should this really mandate hundreds of hours in WvW alone? Of course not, nobody wants to grind out WvW just for a Legendary. “Do the Jumping Puzzle a hundred times” is the alternative that most choose, and its not a good one. And no, that’s not a request to remove badges from the JPs, just pointing out the flawed design.

In the end, what is a legendary? It’s a symbol that you bought or farmed ludicrous amounts of gold. It’s a symbol of winning the lottery with a precursor, and having good luck with Mystic Clovers (or being persistent in spite of bad luck). On some level I wonder if the whole concept of Legendaries was meant to be a subtle jab at hardcore players, an attempt to see how many hoops they would be willing to jump through just for a status item.

I haven’t yet done Simin since the patch, but if all that was changed was spark pathing, the fight is still going to be significantly overtuned. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good challenge as much as anyone else, but the Simin fight is just on a completely different level of required gear & coordination than anything else in the entire game. By lightyears.

You have a mechanic in which even the smallest, slightest mistake results in what is essentially a complete boss reset. The only way most groups are even getting past it is by exploitation, and its pretty telling that some in this thread are still having trouble with it even when using the 4/5 exploit, even after the pathing fix.

Please retune the Simin fight. The easiest solution is to make her heal slower, so that perfect coordination results in a fast win, but sloppiness only drags out the fight – not completely resets it.

Keep in mind this fight takes an hour or more just to get to, and Lupi still has to be dealt with, which is no small task on its own. Adding in a “be perfect or get out” fight like Simin on top of Arah’s already steep difficulty is just too much for anyone but the game’s absolute best players, let alone an average PUG group.

That poor downed guys going to be stressed as that he’s going to get kicked and annoyed as hell if he gets no loot as he’s stuck dead. Fix the bugs first.

Yes, bad play is punished with death and wiped encounters. Like in every other video game and MMORPG on the planet. You don’t win unless you successfully navigate the boss. That includes avoiding AoEs, watching for charge-up tells, and being smart about dodges, heals, and defensive cooldowns.

Playing well is rewarded with a dead boss and a loot chest. Playing poorly is punished with a wipe. What part of this do you disagree with?

Rez-rushing was bad design. Pure and simple. Was it necessary for some bosses? Yup. Doesn’t mean it was good design. Removing rez-rushing isn’t going to wipe pugs off the game.

Dungeons, especially explorables, may have to be taken more seriously, yes. And they should be. Explorable Dungeons are the hardest group content available in the game. They should require more than just throwing corpses at the boss until it falls over.

Patch Notes?

Mira.4071

let me illustrate a point that though i didn’t express, it was more a read between the lines thing that ties in succinctly with mark’s official post.

what if a recipe was released in the patch notes that said for ‘x new item,’ you need:

250 powerful sacs of venom
150 mystic coins
200 karka shells
50 globs of ectoplasm

now, as per mark’s post, what if this recipe was not 100% working, yet according to the entitlement whiners here, the patch notes are due NO MATTER THE CONDITION OF THE PATCH ITSELF?

The thing is though, even without confirmation of recipes, the market is impacted by speculation anyway. Have you seen material prices lately?

Then of course the moment the patch hits, everyone who figures out this recipe in the first 5 minutes will storm the TP and buy up everything that it uses.

I really do find it very unlikely that this is happening. I don’t see Anet allowing it to go on if it were. Wouldn’t that violate their free market philosophy?

Anet isn’t allowing it to go on, they’re just taking a long time to implement the fix. They’re clearly not happy with precursor prices. Whether that’s due to a cabal of people smoking cigars in a boiler room and price fixing, or just naturally being scarce in supply, its pretty much irrelevant.

Precursors being ludicrously expensive is something that will not exist forever, due to the coming scavenger hunt. That might be 3 months off, 6 months off, or a year off for all I know. But the choice to pay an inflated price for one now is just that – a conscious choice to pay the high price for one now versus waiting for the fix to come.

I’ve made my choice. I refuse to pay the extortionary prices on the TP, and I refuse to gamble away my gold at the Forge. This leaves me with only one sane option – wait for the patch, and gather the other materials in the meantime.

Essentially, the reward structure has people getting their exotic gear at 2-4 gold per piece, and after that it’s a long, long grind to several hundred gold before achieving the next tier. The game wants more variance in drops, and it really needs more goals between basic exotics and 1000 gold legendaries that most players will never touch.

I’m pretty sure that was the entire point of adding the Ascended tier. They saw people capping out in exotics within 2 weeks, paying 3g a piece, and then looking at a ~6 months to 1 year farmfests to make a 1000g legendary, with no rewards in the interim. They weren’t happy.

Enter Ascended, which seems to be targeted at taking several weeks to perfectly infuse a single piece. Granted, we only have 3 slots so far, but full armor sets and weapons will be forthcoming. I would guess that these will also have “middling” time/money investments – they won’t take thousands of gold to make, but the average player will need to invest a significant amount of time and gold to create one.

Ideally, Ascended gear will keep people playing, keep them farming and using gold/materials to craft high-end items. These items should take some dedication (or, in place of dedication, $$$ on the gem store), but won’t be the 1000g grindforever-or-have-the-luck-of-the-gods items that Legendaries are.

My problem is that my Necro feels very papery and weak. I usually have a hard time killing Veterans and more than one mob can overwhelm me. The slot skills I’ve been using most are Blood is Power, Corrupt Boon and Epidemic.

I could really use some advice on making my Necro die less often, or more able to deal with large groups of mobs, and stand on her own against a Veteran. Any gear/build/trait/skill change advice is very welcome.

I use AH.

It’s still an amazing trait, and there are still dozens of things that can trigger it. Yep, it took a healing hit with the Vigor change. It certainly wasn’t crippled by the change.

I think its important for someone to speak up and say that the Vigor change was actually beneficial for what the trait was designed for – granting Vigor and helping grant additional dodges, which was previously a weak point of the hammer playstyle (and probably also mace play).

I don’t think its fair to call the change a straight nerf, because it did bring benefits to play styles that were previously not able to trigger the Vigor boon every 1 sec.

I play a hammer guardian. Due to my slow weapon swings, combined with various amounts of downtime rezzing or trying to avoid AOEs, I very rarely kept the Vigor boon up before when it was a 1-second duration.

Last night I did CoE Explorable and I have to say the new change is amazing for me. During boss fights I have 100% Vigor uptime. I was able to melee on Subject Alpha, which used to be a purely ranged battle for me since I would never have the stamina to dodge out of his AoEs.

I understand that its AH synergy took a hit, but it feels a lot more useful to me now, as a trait designed to help me dodge. Meleeing feels fun and reactive again, instead of slow and frustrating.

Thanks, ArenaNet.

You guys are making it out to be WAY worse than it is. Sometimes something really is just overpowered – and this Vigor/AH synergy was just that, overpowered.

AH is not useless. It is not crippled. It is still an amazing trait, it’s just slightly less so now that something which, in all likelihood, was never even designed with AH in mind, has been toned down a little.

You still have tons of other skills and traits, both active and passive, that provide a huge variety of boons for AH to play off of.

Yes, the Vigor/AH synergy was terrific. Yes, your self-healing potential has been somewhat diminished. And yes, that was the point of doing it – it was too good.

You underestimate the power of market manipulation. There are people doing it right now. Keep an eye on the quantity of any given precursor being sold and watch its price over the next few hours.

Prices were manipulated up to where they were and the manipulators are going to keep them there no matter how many precursors drop. These are people who already have legendaries and have 3000+ gold to burn. Don’t think anyone really does? Search orders for lemons (the account bound ingredient), some guy put a 3800g joke bid on one to show off how much gold he has.

Maybe you should stop trying to grind Orr for 6 months straight and check out the fun stuff that was added to the game instead. Dungeons have much better loot, Fractals are a great challenge with great rewards, and all 55+ zones drop max level items.

Yet you’re sitting in Cursed Shore trying to do Shelter/Penintent for the trillionth time, tagging as many monsters as possible in a brainless zerg for hours on end and all for what? A shiny weapon skin? Wouldn’t you rather… play the game? Have fun, make friends, do dungeons, explore the world?

I honestly cannot get behind the mentality it takes to actually want to sit at the same 2 events and do them hundreds of times a day every day for 6 months. It’s unhealthy and I am glad that ArenaNet is taking measures to prevent that kind of play (and to provide alternatives).

Have you played Lineage, Aion, etc?

You had to farm 1000000 mobs to drop rare recipe, you had to farm 1000 hours so you can craft something that didnt even crit and you had to start again. That made those things rare when somene achived them.

I know these are one of those most grindy mmorpgs. But if you ask me If I want something like world of warcraft, casual and simple mmorpg, where everyone is entitled to everything or someting like Aion, lineage. I would never pick up World of Warcraft again.

Legendary and rare weapons should take months, years to obtain. But when you obtain you never take them off. Its something you cherish, someting you are kitten proud off and when you have them, the whole server remebers your nickname.
But if players wants Legendaries, or really rare weapons like Mjolnir to take about few weeks, month to obtain. I am okey with that, I will just play Elder scrolls online.

I agree with more spots where to farm lodestones, etc. But grind is huge part of mmopgs.

If Legendaries are supposed to take “years to obtain”, why are there people already running around with them now, 2 months after release? The problem is that Legendaries only take “years to obtain” if you don’t have a fat wallet, so the most efficient way to get one is just to get a lot of gold. And in turn the most efficient way to get a lot of gold is to run the same boring event chains a million times.

If Arenanet truly wanted something that took a long time to earn, why not make some kind of daily crafting material? Imagine something like Mystic Coins but soulbound. You can get 1 per day. Now you have an item that makes you wait a specific amount of days before you can craft your item. Make it take 350 of them and then everyone has to wait at least a year to make one and nobody can buy their way past it.

I’m way more in favor of something like this, than the way it currently exists.

After legendaries, how about other things?

Epic quest chains like that would certainly be a lot more fun and feel more rewarding than grinding hundreds of gold running the same events over and over again.

For some reason though there is a percentage of the community that feels running Plinx endlessly is their idea of a fun endgame and that if they do this for long enough they are more deserving of great rewards than you or I.

Official Response: Drop Rate of Legendary Precursors

Every contet Guild Wars 2 provide is accessible for everyone and its easy.

And now you are here complaining about how hard is to obtain precursor, legendary and throw arguments about accessibility. But everyone can have them, but they need to work for them. They are not restricted for one person per server, etc.

Running the same event chain 10000 times isn’t hard at all. It’s a mindless, boring activity that a chimp (or a bot) could do. This “great rewards should require hard work” mentality would be something I’d agree with if hard work was actually required to create a legendary. It’s not. All that is required is an incredibly high tolerance for a repetitive activity. If you can stomach enough Plinx runs for 1000g then you get your legendary. In what way have you done something deserving of a cool reward?

I’d argue that under your philosophy of hard work leading to exceptional rewards, the Mad King’s Clock Tower should’ve been giving out precursors because I promise it was much harder (and more fun!) than spamming AOEs at Plinx for a zillion hours.

Not hard work, just boring, grindy busywork. Given that Anet has gone on the record many times stating they do not wish GW2 to be a grind game, it seems pretty obvious that the legendary grind needs to be toned down.

Lodestones = bad design

There are times, when the global trading post just has about 100~200 charged lodestones. Currently it is at 377.

One Mjolnir takes 350 of them.
Besides the 1000g it requires to buy them, if a global trading post can barely offer enough of a single material to make a single weapon, then there is something horribly horribly wrong.

This guy summed it up. 350 Charged Lodestones to craft one non-legendary weapon. About that many on the global Trading Post. For the entire game. There are enough to craft ONE. And this is going to add up to between 800 and 1000g – an amount no one can realistically farm so they will either buy it from Anet or buy it from the botters. To make a non-legendary.

Let’s say our prospective Mjolnir-crafter decides to take the nobler (and more expensive) path, and buys 800g worth of gems from Arenanet. Well, at current prices it costs $10 for 800 gems. Gem->Gold conversion rates vary wildly, but let’s be generous and say you can get 1g for your 100 gems. At this generous rate, you will spend $10 on 8g. I’m sure you all can do the math – that’s about 1000 bucks worth of gems to buy enough lodestones to craft a Mjolnir.

Legendaries: worth getting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I am mostly ok with the Legendary item requirements barring 2 things:

1- The Precursor. This is ENTIRELY luck based, and I don’t think it should be. Your only options for getting one right now are to get lucky in the Mystic Forge, get lucky by having one drop, or to grind 200g+ to buy one from someone else who got lucky.

2- The Lodestones. Pretty much the same thing as the Precursor. Extremely luck based, and even farming all day long at max Magic Find you might only expect to find 1 or 2 of these in an 8 hour farm session. Figure that you need 200, 300, even 350 for one (non-legendary!!) item and it quickly becomes obvious that the drop rate on Lodestones needs serious tuning. Again, the only alternative is to pay the gold price, as of right now 2.5g per Charged and rising. For those keeping track that’s 875g in materials — just for one of the materials! — for a non-legendary item! (Mjolnir). We’ve officially departed into crazy land…

What would I do to solve it? Pretty simple really. #1 I would just add in a progression route to make guaranteed Precursor. Materials can be hard to get, maybe you need a ton of dungeon tokens or whatever. But it should be something that can actually be worked toward with a goal in sight and is not purely “well gee I just threw 50g into the Mystic Forge and got nothing, oh well back to the drawing board”

As for #2 again I offer a simple solution, make Lodestones drop FAR more commonly, driving prices down to the ~25-50s region and making actually farming them yourself become viable. Alternatively award Lodestones for completing other in-game tasks, maybe doing DEs or dungeon runs guarantees you some.

Everything else about the legendaries isn’t really that big of a deal, its primarily just the precursor and the lodestones. All the other stuff can be worked toward at a steady pace. The precursor and lodestones are pure lottery.

A bit off topic — Ritual, what are you farming for 15-20g/day? Only thing that comes to mind is maybe Plinx but I don’t see that kind of money there.

Feel free to PM me if you don’t want it made public.

I saw on the announcements page that BLTC purchases are being delayed. How long is the delay supposed to be? I bought some transmutation stones last night and still don’t have them, its been about 12 hours.

Charged Lodestones sell between 2 and 3g each. The problem is that farming them takes forever, and they drop off of mobs that are only up if Arah is controlled. 2g for a single drop sounds nice on paper until you realize WHY they are so expensive, and why so few are on the Trading Post. The drop rate is abysmal and you could spend hours farming for them without getting a single one.

Edit: They also rarely come from chests in CoE.

right now the only way to get a legendary is to buy gold, plain and simple.

The funny thing is that even if you bought the gold to buy them there’s not enough enough of them on the market to buy. Some recipes need 250 (or more) lodestones. Last time I checked there were about 80 on the TP – worldwide.

As someone who was actually interested in earning a legendary through weeks/months of persistence, I have to say I’m pretty discouraged. Right now the goal seems impossible for anyone who doesn’t have a legion of minions (or bots) to farm for them.

Even if I was Donald Trump and could just swipe my credit card and have every buyable legendary component dropped in my lap, the current worldwide Trading Post doesn’t even have one third of the lodestones required for one legendary!

What do you think the "1 time surprise" will be? [spoilers]

Mad King bursts out of the lion statue. Not sure just a guess though.

What problems? Challenging content is not a “problem”.

I like it as a group event. This is a multiplayer game. I agree with the guy who said it was a fun group experience to race others, “compete” in this event and share frustrations and new milestones.

Ive made it to the top of the clock tower 36 times now when i got for the last jump through the window i just bounch off the hole the lightning makes and fall. and have to restart im at the point i can make it to the top of the tower every single time but that last jump just doesnt wanna work for me.

Jump HARD to the right. When the lightning strikes the clock, and you see the hole, jump off the stairs, toward the clock, and HARD to the right.

80 Guardian, no speed boosts, no one with a banner, I was the only one who made it up there.

I actually made it to the top 6-7 times. The jumping part wasn’t even that hard for me, I was more confused by the ending gimmick, which I didn’t understand until someone explained it to me.

Couldn’t you just stay in a 1-15 zone all game? If you want to get to 80 without dying I hate to say it but you’re probably best off just running gathering laps around Queensdale.

Consider what happened to Diablo 3.

So when you hit level 80, you were magically granted a full set of exotics?

It’s not ArenaNet’s fault that you rushed to cap and immediately dumped your gold into having the best gear in the game instantly.

I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think that change made it into this patch.

For those of you that played WoW, SW:TOR, GW1, Age of Conan, EVE, RIFT, etc; how long did it take before the game was balanced/ had most MAJOR bugs worked out? How long before the complaints on the forums went from an exponential rise to a steady decay? Please provide specific anecdotes if you can.

An honest question for someone who has never played an MMO long term.

Pretty much never. I haven’t played WoW in a year, and I could probably rattle off at least five bugs that are probably still in and have gone unaddressed since 2005.
