Game is in a Sad State

I love GW2. Been playing since launch. I even love the HoT maps, masteries, etc. But boy is the game in a really sad state right now:

HoT maps – really tough to enjoy these incredible maps with the megaserver system in its current state. The last thing I want to do is actively search for a populated map. The megaserver system should automatically place me in the most populated map but it never does.

PvP – wow such a fun game mode in complete and utter disrepair with the current matchmaking system. I’m completely demoralized with the long losing streaks and I know I’m not as bad as the system makes me believe.

WvW – epic fights are gone in the frontier maps. nobody likes them. the only decent fights are at stonemist now and the wvw population seems dead.

Collections – love the system HATE HATE HATE the absolutely incredible grind

Fractals – swamp anyone?

So many great systems in place, but the implantation is so poorly done. I can’t think of any game mode that is fun at the moment. Maybe raids but my guild isn’t doing them. I used to give money to anet monthly. But I’ll be talking with my wallet until they get it together. ESO is now my MMO of choice and GW2 the backup. I hope anet gets it together.

-Noone capping home; I see this frequently in Foefire where you need one capper and one to check for crossers

-Allowing rangers to rapid fire from range uncontested

These two really kitten me off but seeing the first over and over again one day made me want to start rage quitting.

I hear you man. When I get a team that plays mostly smart, I’m there to the end and it reinvigorates me and reminds me why I love GW2 pvp. And then I get a handful of just bad players. And not necessary bad in terms of skill; but bad in terms of inability to be a team players and to play smart.

There should be some way to keep people out of ranked until they’ve achieved some kind of minimum ability with their profession and with their knowledge of how to play the maps.

I’m a rage quitter. But I don’t quit if we’re outmatched in terms of skill. I quit when I see rampant kittenery in solo queue ranked which is completely out of my control. It’s frustrating when it happens, and when I bring it up, I get “kitten you noob.” So rather than beat my head against this sort of thing, I afk and pull up some Daily Show on my Ipad. Here is what I see time and time again:

-Late starts; people stand around at spawn and join the fight late resulting in a 50+ point lead before they deign to get off the crapper and join the fight
-kitten capping; two or more people capping an uncontested point. I saw my entire team capping home the other day, IN RANKED! Four people capping home uncontested while the other two points went to the other team without a fight while I get roflstomped solo
-Noone capping home; I see this frequently in Foefire where you need one capper and one to check for crossers
-Inability to rotate
-Not stomping downed players
-Not rezzing downed teammates
-Not standing in circles to contest a point
-Running into a 5 man zerg over and over again instead of rotating away
-Road fighting when caps are needed
-Support toons bunking home instead of mid because mid is too hard to bunk
-People testing new builds
-Not focus firing and/or ignoring a called glassy target
-Focusing the wrong target
-Allowing rangers to rapid fire from range uncontested

I could go on. You figure that you should know your kitten a small bit before queuing ranked. I don’t claim to know everything and I’m far from “pro.” But I am also far from the worst and many times very good to excellent. Most people just play completely kittened in ranked. I’ve been in so many matches where we completely stomped the other team from a dps perspective, but we still lost do to some of the above stupidity. I’ve seen it so often that I need Jon Stewart to soothe away my nerd rage while I afk from the “kitten you noob” nonsense.

This has been my main beef with the game since day one. The game RELIES on your ability to see telegraphs and react to them. In small groups, I can JUST make out the telegraph. In world events, forget it. I spam 1 and pray.

The devs indicated just after release that they would put in a particle effects slider. They did put in a slider but it really doesn’t do anything.

They need to take a look at TESO and follow their lead. You can still have pretty particle effects without completely occluding the boss/mob that you’re fighting.

My issue with ‘making things harder’ is the risk vs reward system is completely broken now. Loot now needs to be overhauled, and I just don’t see that happening. Why spend double the time killing X boss, running X dung path, …ect, for the same rewards before the patch. It was already a horrible risk v reward system before, its just a whole lot worse now. And if they do not plan on addressing it, I for one won’t be around for HoT.

This so much! But Anet’s response to boosting rewards is providing another box that rewards 3 greens and a blue instead of 2 greens and a blue. Unique rewards are where it’s at for me and there’s little of that in the game unless it’s tied to gold sinks.

I like the scope of what they’ve done but the professions are so unbalanced now that it’s laughable. Almost every game mode is currently broken because of balance issues. The only mode still playable is the personal story but even that is more faceroll than normal now. I’m hoping they get this dialed in before the xpac drops. But so far, they are not engendering any confidence.

Doubling hit points to make world bosses tougher does not take much thought not does it make it more challenging; just more time consuming (except for maybe TT and Teq). Come on Anet you can do better than that!

Hoping they straighten out the mess soon. I’m growing weary of the personal story.

Reduce the Gold Cost of Cultural Armor

Mordalus.8146

This again? There have been players requesting this since launch, and it is futile. Multiple reasons aside, lets just set it out there that the T3 cultural is a rarity that is kept as such by the expense cost. But it also keeps its status as a well sought after set.

Oh, and you can convert Karma into gold via the chests at Balthazar Temple in Orr. Or you could also use Karma to purchase 4x of the T3 cultural weapons and then Mystic Forge them into exotic weapons you can sell. Both of these are options to get gold from Karma, having done both myself many times.

Thanks for the tips on this. I had no idea that converting karma to gold was possible. But I still think there should be SOMETHING really nice that could be bought with karma.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Mordalus.8146

Taunt is a good idea imo. The game needs some soft roles instituted to make small group content more interesting. Right now, healing and tanking are completely unnecessary in the PvE meta even though we have gear for those types of roles. Anet can certainly implement these things without fully embracing the trinity. Honestly, it would be a breath of fresh air compared to the everyone in zerker gear meta.

They’ve already said, with much consternation from the community, that there will be no new dungeons and that dungeons will only be tweaked here and there. I’d give you the source but I’m too lazy to look. It was in some kind of live stream.

Anet failed kitten dungeons because they didn’t design the early dungeons very well at all. Even the later dungeons from LS season 1 and fractals were still not that well designed, although they were much better. The fact that nobody in a dungeon party has a designated role, other than trying not to go down, makes for difficult dungeon design. This is why Anet has focused on open world zerg content more than anything else. There’s less thought necessary in that type of design.

So I took another look at the cultural armor and I love it. Unfortunately, it’s too expensive in terms of gold. Why not reduce the gold cost, or better yet, make it a karma only reward? Hell there are enough gold sinks in the game already with legendary grind, crafting grind, ascended items, sigils, runes, etc. Why not let us use some of this worthless karma on something that’s nice for once. I have a gazillion karma with nothing worthwhile to spend it on.

I’ve said this before. Boost the quality, not the quantity, of the rewards, and you’ll suddenly find that people will put forth the effort to down him. But Anet’s version of boosting rewards is 3 greens and a blue instead of 2 greens and a blue. Make some kind of unique Teq skin armor or Teq claw swords that you can acquire over time and people will flock to the event and put forth the effort.

It’s the old risk vs reward question again. Teq is not worth the crap rewards. Boost the rewards significantly, or add some kind of unique reward that can be earned over time, and people will put forth the effort to down him. Keep the rewards as is and it will never be anything worth doing beyond the achievements. As is, he’s not worth the time investment anymore.

The trait aspect of the build I could care less about. It’s the gear that bothers me. It has taken me three years to kit out my guardian in ascended berserker gear. Now that they’ve been nerfed to hell, the gear is worthless. I expect this sort of gear turnover in WoW; not in GW2. All I can think of now is all the gold I need to spend to re-gear.

Even the ability to re-stat my ascended will cost a pretty penny since all of the upgrades are lost. New runes and all new agony resists will be needed. Ugh! My legendary weapon plans are once again on hold.

1. Anet needs to stop being silent on the HoT pricing issue like it’s going to go away. This is a huge PR bungle and being silent just kittenes people off and alienates them more.

2. Either explain how the expansion contains loads of top-tier content and is worth the money or drop the price to something more palatable. Fifty bucks is worth it if it delivers on quantity and quality. If not, thirty bucks is the top end price. I’m thinking a WoW-type of expansion for fifty bucks. If a price drop is warranted, decouple the base game with the expansion and charge separately.

3. Give a character expansion slot with the base package.

4. Reward the veterans and/or cash shop supporters with some bling.

I don’t begrudge Anet making money. But give us some value. Based on the info we have now, this xpac doesn’t hold up when compared to competitors like WoW or Final Fantasy xpacs. This IS a AAA MMO is it not? LOTRO tried the less content and higher priced xpac approach with each successive xpac. It didn’t work out well for them.

Mordalus.8146

Factions and Nightfall added new classes and new char slots with them at no extra cost and bank tabs too to people already owning Prophecies. That was a nice gesture towards the loyal player base.

Funny thing is HoT turned from an expansion to a standalone version with the twist in the plot Anet threw out. Meaning that while the new players get the base game ‘for free’, the existing player base should get something tossed in for free too (char slot, bank expansion, inventory expansion, gems… Not the middle finger waved in front of their eyes. That’s bad marketing from my point of view.

It’s also bad marketing when fixing bugs and balance in the game for the players is being a secondary goal to stacking up more trash in the gemstore. Because that means for me the bugs in the orginal game will be buried under the new ones which, in turn, will be covered up with more [Mini Rock] clones. So I’m understanding that I’ll be paying for something that has a 50-50 chance of functioning as intended and there’s a really high chance of Anet just revising their statements (like they did with HoT being expansion) if the pressure will become too big on adressing confusing mechanics or other unpleasant aspects.

All companies, under the loving eyes of the big publishers (like EA, hm?) are shifting their strategies towards milking their customers dry. ME3 was a very good example of such a policy. Current marketing strategies applied in GW2 are also good example. So while pricing-wise, the $50 is not uncommon, the attitude towards the loyal community is disastrous.

All of the GW1 releases were a good value. EotN was also a good value. This does not seem like the same Anet. It seems like something EA would do. Wait! They’re giving away expansions over at SWTOR to loyal customers? Say it ain’t so!

Seems Like a Good Time to Try ESO

Mordalus.8146

You’ll be back. You’ll realize if a game is fun enough, you would be playing it already, no matter the price. If ESO is really that attractive to you, and GW2 is so terrible, you would’ve already been playing ESO.

Anyways, you’ll likely have some fun in ESO, I did. But the fun just didn’t last for me.

I LOVE gw2 but I’ve never tried ESO amd I’m a huge fan of Elder Scrolls games. It just seems like a good time to try it since HoT is overpriced at the moment. I’ll probably return to gw2 if ESO doesn’t do it for me AND the cost of HoT comes down to a better value. Again, I’d pay the 50+ happily if the amount of content seemed in line with the cost. It just doesn’t so it seems like a good time to try ESO.

I just think anet is making a huge mistake here. If the value was there, I wouldn’t even consider taking a break from gw2. Now I’m off to try a different game, and if it works for me, I may not be coming back. It seems like anet is gambling here and I don’t appreciate them gamble with a loyal gem purchaser like myself.

It’s like when Charter cable wouldn’t discount my bill even though I was a loyal customer of 10+ years. I ended up giving the better valued Direct TV a try. I ended up staying there because the service was so much better even though Charter continues to offer me all of these shiny new deals. Direct TV continually bends over backwards to keep me as a customer every time I call them to ask for better value. Charter lost their chance with me. There’s a similar danger to anet.

Maybe they should at least offer discounts for those of us that have supported the game with our wallets after the initial purchase price of the game. But they’d rather go for the money grab like Charter did with me. I really have no issue taking my money elsewhere as a result. Will I be back? It depends on how much “greener” the other grass is and whether or not anet amends this pricing plan.

I keep hearing this no sub fee argument. What about us schlubs that actually supported the game after the initial game purchase by buying gems? The value isn’t as pronounced for us. The xpac is overpriced. Plain and simple. Unless the devs are holding a few aces up their sleeves. But they’ve already said that what they’ve announced is all there is. It seems this b2p experiment isn’t as great as I thought it was when the game released if we’re just going to end up paying through the nose on the back end. There should at least be a discount for gem buying customers.

I’ve been a loyal GW2 patron since release. Even spending a small amount of cash on gems every month. Up until now, GW2 has been a great value. But I just refuse to spend 50 bucks plus on Silverwastes 2.0 and some LS updates. Twenty even twenty-five bucks? Yes. Fifty? Not on your life. The value is just not there. The amount of content appears to be very slim for such a high dollar figure.

Especially since I’ve been eyeing up ESO since it released. And now that it’s B2P and discounted, it seems like the better value. Also, most of its bugs have been fixed and it’s received a nice amount of polish as well as new systems. Many of the issues players have complained about are gone.

So I think I’ve off to Tamriel for a while. At least until HoT comes down to a more realistic price based on the small amount of content it appears to be delivering.

AFK in matches

in PvP

Posted by: Mordalus.8146

Mordalus.8146

Reporting does nothing and it never will. AFKers don’t bother me. Hell I do it myself when we’re down an ungodly amount and there is no way to come back because people are either 1) double and triple capping uncontested points, 2) running into the zerg, and dying, repeatedly without rotating out to something uncontested, 3) not standing in circles because everyone and their mother is zerker spec and melts instantly, or 4) road fighting instead of capping when only one point is capped.

My issue is with people that come into ranked testing new builds or unfamiliar professions. Or people that queue KNOWING that their connection is bad. I had a teammate using Amtrak wifi yesterday. Suffice it to say she was lagging incredibly bad and was useless. What did she do after that match? Queued up for another. Lastly, people that queue and willingly enter a match knowing that their time is limited and they may not finish. All of these types of people are just extremely inconsiderate.

AFKers that quit trying because a match is unwinnable due to the above antics? Whatever. It’s rarely an issue when the match is competitive. It’s the above inconsiderates that get my goat.

The way to fix this is coding a matchmaking system that produces more competitive matches and gating ranked play to those that at least have a modicum of experience in spvp. Maybe something like needing 20 wins in unranked per profession to unlock ranked for that profession.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I know what you mean. For me it seems to be always about ownership of some sort for it to feel meaningful. DAoC sieges (not the musicals chairs of WvW), Eve and sovereignty and player run economy, GW1 and the HoM and guild halls, Rift’s housing, SWGs housing and crafting, etc. Once I feel like I can make a home in the game world, it starts to feel meaningful. GW2 does none of these things. There is a lot to love about GW2, but meaningful content is not one of them. It’s a dessert type of game and not a main course.

1. Don’t test a new build or profession in ranked.
2. Don’t double, triple, or team cap uncontested points. Move your sorry kitten to where you’re needed.
3. Don’t be a road warrior when the team is losing.
4. Learn to rotate.
5. Don’t queue if you’re turtle heading or will be otherwise indisposed. Go heave that havanna and then queue after you’ve gotten that spring back in your step.

Treasure Hunter and HoT Precursor Collections

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mordalus.8146

Mordalus.8146

Well I just took a look at this collection/achievement and this one thing embodies the two major problems with GW2:

1. Brutally frustrating RNG
2. Trash rewards

At first I was excited to get started on a new item for my home instance. The first items on the list are relatively easy to acquire and had me traipsing around the world revisiting old content. Very fun stuff.

But then I researched some of the other items and man they are very unforgiving RNG drops and they’re VERY expensive items on the TP.

Further research revealed that the home instance chest you get as a reward provides you the typical two blues and a green. Wow! Why bother with this Anet? It’s not worth even bothering with this on so many levels.

This this led me to think about the new collections for obtaining precursors in HoT. I am very nervous that the precursor collections will NOT be skill-based epic quests but be modeled on the Treasure Hunter collection. If that’s the case, then the rare drops in the collection may amount to more RNG frustration than they’re worth and/or the sum cost of the collection items outstripping the cost of the precursor on the TP.

If that’s the case Anet, why bother? Everyone will take the path of least resistance which will continue to be forge and gold farming.

Of course this is ALL speculation. But Anet has a clear history of this type of thing.

Precursors and TP: Farewell

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mordalus.8146

Mordalus.8146

My guess is that gold grinding, buying from the TP, or praying at the Mystic Toilet will still be the most efficient way to acquire the precursors. We all know Anet LOVES brutally frustrating RNG so that we’ll open our wallets. You can guarantee that the precursor collections will be full of rare drops much as the Treasure Hunter collection currently is. The sum cost of these rare drops will, in turn, most likely cost more than the actual pre itself on the TP.

Am I hoping for a more fun and skill-based approach? Hell yeah. But this is Anet we’re talking about. RNG rules the day with them. Keep hoarding your gold. Oh but it would be nice to actually buy some of the shiny things in the cash shop rather than hoarding my gold. Let’s hope Anet sees reason and makes the mechanic fun and challenging rather than full of RNG frustrations.

Maybe until such time as a solution for the RNG issues is implemented, you guys could just stop releasing new content with heavy RNG components, like Mordrem organs, Carapace boxes, things like that. You can have RNG as an alternate method of earning things, but there should also be a non -RNG option.

I agree with this concept. Although carapace boxes already have a non-RNG way of getting them through crests. And this implementation I find adequate because I’m happy when I get a drop I’ve been wanting but can also get the item just by playing and working towards it. But I wish the Mordrem parts weren’t pure RNG although I do like that they release specific part extractors with each update. Let’s hope new specific extractors will be released on the 27th. Now the grind to get the crests is another topic on its own which I’ll leave for another thread.

I am sure one can come up with better solutions than these 3 John.

These aren’t solutions, they’re concepts that would be the framework behind a solution.

One thing that’s bothersome about all the feedback is that the overwhelming majority can’t stand it in it’s current form. But yet the devs continue to implement it as is.

Obligatory note that this statement has no factual backing in two senses. That being said, I began this thread because I wanted to open discussion on the fact. I wouldn’t continue it in this fashion if I didn’t agree that there could be superior systems.

I know it’s hard to imagine, but working in video games there is often a LARGE investment into changes. It’s not something that can happen overnight. I ask for lenience in this, it isn’t that we aren’t listening or not working, we are, really hard. I firmly believe this game has gotten better and better and better and it’s going to be better and better and better than it is now.

While yes my comment has no factual backing, it’s irrelevant. As a paying customer, fan, and avid player of GW2, I find the current RNG system not fun, unrewarding, and very frustrating. I gave a few examples of why in my original post. And I am far from the only one that shares this sentiment. As an entity that provides a service, it’s up to you to make it better and not be so defensive/snippy about it. Customer Service 101.

yeep i have one and couldn’t live without it. speaking of which i would love to have a single click salvage option with that thingy for greens and blues. i’m a bit weary of the inventory management mini-game.

This whole thing is a symptom of two things: Anet’s silence on the direction of the game and players frothing at the mouth for some beefier content other than the LS drip feed.

[Suggestion] Auto Sort Bags and Bank Space

Please give us a button that will auto-sort our bags and banks space like WoW does in their new expansion. There is so much busy work already with TP, vendoring, and salvaging the mass quantity of trash we get as rewards. This would help reduce the level of busy work and allow us to get back to the fun stuff a little faster.

They’re great because the leveling experience is so bad.

To each their own. I found the leveling experience to be leaps and bounds better than any MMO I’ve played. There are many things wrong with GW2. The leveling experience is not one of them.

Oh and we already have what Anet considers to be raid content. Teq and worm. I can definitely see us getting more of that type of content.

You guys are setting yourselves up for disappointment. There is no reason to believe that it will be any different than last season’s finale. Now the announcement on the 24th on the other hand, I am cautiously excited about that. Although I refuse to get excited by anything Anet hypes anymore. Anet is all about overhyping and underdelivering. Just look at all the hype from the previous feature patch. Daily dev blogs touting how each feature was the second coming when everything about it was meh. But I really do hope they knock my socks off. We’ll see.

Yep they’re useful even though I have 8 level 80s. I get a free skill point every time I use one.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

One thing that’s bothersome about all the feedback is that the overwhelming majority can’t stand it in it’s current form. But yet the devs continue to implement it as is. The current extremely rare drops for the wintersday tonics is just the latest implementation. Why they continue to do this when everyone hates it is beyond me. I can understand some RNG is necessary but anet takes it to a new level.

Another one that kittenes me off is that I’m at 43 in fractals and I have only one fractal skin to show for it due to the extremely low drop rate. And I have zero ability to acquire them otherwise. Not to mention precursors, gambling boxes, mordrem parts, etc. I’ll throw money at them if they put in fun mechanics to acquire these items!

Top 5 things Anet got wrong

5. Particle Effects – For a game that relies on the ability to see a mob’s telegraph in order to react to it, I have a helluva time seeing anything other than pretty lights. Especially in group of more than five. We were promised a slider to tone it down. What we got is far from enough.

4. Lack of build diversity.

3. Ability to ignore boss mechanics in dungeons via stacking.

2. WvW feels meaningless. It’s just a giant game of musical chairs. DAoC felt much more meaningful with it’s Darkness Falls dungeon, guild alerts when guild keeps were under attack, and relic raids. There has been very little iteration on WvW with the exception of mists which is really a glorified PvE map.

1. Legendaries – I’ve never had an MMO goal take me more than a year. Two years plus and I’m still chasing a precursor. I refuse to play the RNG game in the toilet and it’s hard to save faster than the rate of inflation for the pre. Acquisition of these weapons should take legendary skill with a legendary questline and not be based on legendary RNG and legendary grind or legendary opening of the wallet. And where is the precursor crafting that we were promised?

Why all so negative?

I’m done as well. The updates are the same old kitten time and time again with new skins. Zerg zerg zerg grind grind grind. I think I’ll go play some single-player RPGs for awhile.
