WP videos are well-constructed and presented, but I gotta disagree with a lot of what he’s saying, especially concerning raids (to clarify, I’m not against raids, I think there is room for them in GW2, but he tends to imply that it’s the best thing to ever happen to GW2, which is highly subjective)

Anyway, it brings more publicity to GW2, so it can’t hurt, as long as it’s not the only voice that is heard.

A much more realistic result of an intentionally flawed aesthetic design is lower sales, as people are often quite regarding before buying stuff. I very much doubt it’s A-net’s goal to sell less gem items.

We got what we deserved. People keep raising forks and torchs about everything (remember the aviator prank controversy). It’s just too much effort on A-Net’s end to be inventive and get shut down for it. So no, I’m not surprised, and I certainly do not put the blame on A-Net.

Did GW2 lose its identity?

@ Vayne and other people that think raids are a bad direction for the game. That is only true if it’s the only direction it’s taking.

Yup, I also played a lot of MMOs. I also saw some of them focusing on raids, mainly but not only, on of them being Wow. And while it was not the only content released, it was clear that raids were the “ultimate goal” of the PVE experience.

And as someone that did his fair share of raiding, I can assure you that nowadays, I just can’t bring myself to raid again. It was cool when it lasted, but now my goals have changed, my gaming habits have changed…

But, even if I can recognize that there is a “risk” of GW2 taking a turn that I wouldn’t like, especially as a non-raider…I can say that I’m satisfied. Why? Because Living World Season 3. Because non-raid PVE maps were added, and good maps, with diveristy and interesting things to do. They also get released every three month, which is a good speed, in my book.

As long as A-Net keeps this rhythm, I couldn’t care less of what is happening for raids. They get more stuff? Great! Let them have it! They have legendary armor? Okay…well, it already takes quite some time to gear a character in ascended, and you can respec the stats anyway, so…do I really need it? Do I really care, since I’m not doing the only content where it’s the most useful?

Is it okay to express your concerns? Of course, it’s good to remind A-Net that there are a lot of people that do not raid. Is it a reason to not have raids at all? Maybe…but again, only if it’s not detrimental to what you’re doing anyway.

As long as Legendary armors do not give more stats and only give access to some utility and some skin, there is zero problem gating them behind raids.

GW2 is a big game. There is room for different kinds of players in it. Since Season 3, I feel A-Net is doing a great job balancing raids and open-world releases.

Did GW2 lose its identity?

Is it even possible to objectively answer OP’s question? No, of course not. So I’ll just add my own opinion to the mix.

Imho, no, GW2 hasn’t lost its identity. It has changed, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, and yeah, it has changed a lot…and not that much too. But yeah, as many have already asked, what is GW2 identity to begin with?

I’ve played MMORPGs for about 20 years, like many others. I’ve tried quite a few titles, begun with Wow, just before BC, and played it until mid MoP, but I’ve also tried many MMOs in the meantime. LOTRO, Rift, Aion, GW2 of course, DDO, WildStar, and TSW more recently,…

Among all those games, my best experience, by far, was LOTRO’s first expac, Mines of Moria. I’ve always loved LOTRO, it has such a unique ambiance, the combat is very complex and a little archaïc, even static, but it felt right and faithful to the books, and Mines of Moria introduced some awesome maps, and a true feeling of achievement.
But in the end, like almost all those MMOs, GW2 included, it could not keep my attention.

And yet, I’m here, playing GW2 still, when there are many other MMOs released and dying, as the public’s interest comes and goes, again and again… Why?

When I think about it, there are some reasons that piked my interest when I first tried GW2 (I have not played GW1, and probably never will, since I don’t think I’ll have the time/motivation to invest in such a large scale game anymore) :

- one of the big plus, which still holds quite true, was a very friendly economical model. Not only the “pay once, play forever” deal, a little broken with the introduction of paid expac, but more the “cosmetic and utility only in the Shop”, and, MOST importantly “you can buy Gems with Gold”. This feature is so rare, even nowadays, that I feel it’s important to remember that, if you invest time into GW2, you can buy anything in the Gemstore. Anything. And that is awesome.

- a PVE where other players are welcome, and not a threat or a nuisance. Still holds true, safe some fringe occasions. Individual loot, individual gathering nodes, dynamic scaling, hell YES. No more competitiveness into the cooperative part of the game, thank you!

- but the main reason, the one that makes me feel welcome in GW2 : non-obsolescence of content. Which strangely was only partially true at the beginning of the game, even if it was part of the intent. No increase of level cap, no endless gear increase, no progress resets. Of course, the season 1 of Living Story was a complete disaster for me, since I was testing and playing multiple MMOs at the time. But for the rest, it was always easy to come back after a break, even if said break lasted a year!

And I feel it’s GW2 current main strength, GW2 current identity, which was only partial at the beginning, but has been more and more defined as the game was changed :
whatever you do in GW2, whatever activity you invest time in, you won’t loose progress. Yeah, some new activities were added : fractals, living story season 2 and 3, and more recently raids and masteries. But they do not take away from the core game. When your character is full exo, you’re good to go for 95% of the content. In full ascended, it’s 100%. Unlocked a new skin? A new fractal level? Good, it’s forever. Getting bored of GW2? Take a break, go play other games. If you decide to come back, you won’t have to catch-up (or so little that it doesn’t bother me).

People will complain about “lack of content”, about “content drought”. I’ve played MMOs with lots of content added. Take a break, and you’re out. GW2 current pace of content release, with living story season 3 maps feels right. Not too few, not too many. And that is why I’ll keep coming back.

Like, I’m all against intervening when someone mistreats an real, breathing, leaving animal. But if someone let his/her tamagochi die…whatever. It ain’t real (as of now, at least ^^)

But you’re asking for ANet to change an already existing animation, which I find just disrespectful for those who enjoy this animation. Let them have the Floppy Fish, and let’s ask for a Bubble Fish, not instead, but alongside them.

Enjoying others suffering is one of the simpliest and most basic form of humour.

Personally I’m not sure that enjoying watching others suffer says good things about human nature, or even if it should be even used as a argument. After all, watching dogs kill each other in dog fights is outlawed, no matter how much pleasure some people get from watching them suffer.

It doesn’t, human nature is what it is, but yes, it should be used as an argument, because denying your impulses is auto-destructive. And there is a difference between a dog fight and a virtual dog fight : in the second case, no dogs are actually hurt.

This is what should be important. Not what people think, but what they do. You can’t and should not want to police people’s minds.

Edit :
@ Just a flesh wound : this, this is the danger, I’ll rewrite what you said :
“If enjoyment of watching suffering is the argument used to allow certain types of humor, then why stop there? Why not enjoyment of other types of suffering?”

You’re “allowing” certain types of humor? Since when are certain types of humor forbidden?

And yes, there are many people that enjoy other types of suffering, and guess what, they have the right to do so, under certain limits (mainly, not forcing the suffering unto others, be they humans or animals)

Lol, all this over a magical floppy fish animation in a video game. Triggered much? :P

Well, no more than the people here ranting about how this current rash of treating people with respect — sorry, policital correctness — is destroying modern society, I’d have to say?

In any case, no, it’s about the addition of an animation of a creature constantly suffering to a video game that, previously, hadn’t featured that sort of thing. The important part there is “ongoing representation of an animal suffering”.

Some folks, sure, would find even the level of violence represented in GW2 unpleasant to deal with, and that’s fine. Some folks are fine with significantly greater levels of realism of violence, and that’s … probably also fine, but definitely not my cup of tea.

Everyone has a line, somewhere. Sure, lots more people are going to be uncomfortable given the torture prisoners game to play, than by the flopping fish pet, but that doesn’t mean their discomfort is non-existent, or that you can dismiss them by saying others have it worse.

So, by all means register that you don’t find it a problem, and feel free to correct people if they misstate the cause of your being comfortable with this all.

Just dismissing them out of hand, though, makes you look rather uncompassionate, and using phrases like “triggered much” makes it look like you disrespect the actual suffering of folks with mental illnesses.

That really doesn’t seem like a strong position to gather support for the idea that this is just a joke, and not one that is based on enjoying something suffering. (PS: I’m curious, what the funny part is, if anyone wants to contribute an explanation?)

Enjoying others suffering is one of the simpliest and most basic form of humour. Just take a look at some cartoons, the number of slapstick moments where one of the protagonist is hurt to make the audience laugh is incredibly high.

On to your “ongoing representation of an animal suffering”, I’ll just ask you this : what is wrong with it? I mean, really? Because, the key word here is not “suffering” nor “animal” or “ongoing”. It’s “representation”. It’s not real, it’s an act of expression. Bad taste? Maybe. But since when should we censor bad taste? As long as it’s not real, it should be allowed! Even if I don’t like something and think it should never happen IRL, people should be able to draw/paint/program/dream about it.

If you’re trying to change people’s minds, there are better, more respectfull and downright more efficient ways that to just forbid them to express themselves. In fact, trying to supress one’s instinct can be downright destructive.

Because, do not try to play the victim here. You’re the one trying to prevent people from depicting animal crualty, which has more chance to increase real acts of animal crualty thant preventing them, by the way…

Be a little open-minded, please, allow people to have some fun, even if you don’t share their tastes. Thank you.

No, really, ANet shouldn’t change it, because kitten political correctness. That is in the same league than people that tried (and sadly, succeded) in making ANet feel guilty for their plane joke for 2015 april’s fool.

If it really disturbs you, you can move away, it’s the pet of another player, not yours. My point is : if you don’t like it, ignore it, as it’s not forced unto you. I really don’t see why it disturbs people so greatly, unless they think about it hard, and take the time to actually observe the animation, in which case…maybe the problem is not in the animation.

I do think there are more important things than modifying a joke mini-pet that you’re unlikely to cross that often, given that it’s kinda of bad taste, and won’t probably appeal to that many people in the first place.

- Chronomancer is a strong spec, but group oriented. That being said, as a main Mesmer, I also mainly roam solo. Try a signet build, it adds a lot of survivability. I don’t feel the need to use Chronomancer, but it can also be used in a solo build with really strong traits.

- Don’t know about the visuals, but Ele is quite good in PVE with a very dynamic gameplay (but you probably know that already). Catalyst do add some great utilities and damage.

- Imo, Revenant is all about finding a playstyle that fits you, and it may require some heavy fiddling. Herald brings a ton of utility, mobility, and damage increase, and really changes the feel of the class.

Also, HoT zones have been nerfed and are now more friendly toward solo roaming. You can’t let your guard down, though.

Question about Dungeons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Myhr.9108

Myhr.9108

Speed and efficiency are not required in Dungeons, however, in pick-up groups, you’ll mostly find people who know the fast zerg strats and that won’t bother to explain anything to you, be it the normal strat or the fast one.

Try to find people of the same mind, that run content at the same speed than yourself. A guild is a good place to start, but you can also try the LFG. Just be sure to state if you’re beginning and what pace you want. If you see a group in the LFG that says “exp”, it stands for “experienced” and means people will rush and skip without waiting people left behind.

Thoughts from a casual player

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Myhr.9108

Ask for help in LFG. State out that you want a relax run, not to be stressed. Most negative experience in PU comes from people that rush without saying a world, in my experience, but if you find people that actually talk and that play at your rythm, it’ll have a much much higher chance to be a good time.

Also, search a casual familial guild, with the same objectives than you, like casual open world PVE. In my experience, most HoT content is easier with two people and much easier with 3-4. I don’t know if we’ll have the same playing time slots, but add me if you want a companion to finish those personal story instances. =)

How to make the game world more interesting?

One’s spice is another poison.

All your suggestions are global and forced on everyone. But there are already areas of different difficulties in the game that you can choose if you feel like you want a challenge, Silverwastes, Hots maps, Bitterfrost Frontier to an extent…Orr has still some nasty champions, too.

Let the people who want a more relaxing experience enjoy the calm in the cities, and not be afraid by being ganked by a player vastly more skilled than they are. And if you want challenging PVE group content, take a look at T4 fractals and raids.

[Build-ish/Guide-ish] The way I play revenant

in Revenant

Posted by: Myhr.9108

Myhr.9108

Hey 2.0, glad you’re liking the Rev. It’s a very interesting class that really plays differently from the others, so kudo to Arenanet for that.

You’ll mainly hear complains from people that play Revs in “meta” contents, like PvP, raids, and T4 fractals, because these modes have steep requirements, gear and utility-wise. Really, this can be extended to all classes, but the Revenant, due to the legends, has less build flexibility, by nature.

But in the rest of the game, you’re free to mix and match the Revenant abilities to reach just the playstyle you like. That being said, I find it hard to not use Jallis in open world PVE for its reliable heal and strong utilities (good hard CC, almost spammable).

Also, when you’ll unlock Herald, you’ll be amazed on how much utilities it brings, at the point that base Revenant seems a little underwhelming after that, much more so that with every other elite spec in the game, imo.

Anyway, still a fun class to play as!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Yeah, just take a break! It’s only natural to get bored of a game after a while, it happens later or sooner. One of the great things about GW2 is that when you come back, you won’t feel left behind, because your gear and your progression will always be relevant, and you’ll have just a little catch-up to do to be up to date.

Just be sure to warn your guildies, take some news, and maybe think about a long term goal that would motivate you, like crafting a new legendary, levelling a new toon, maybe buy a commander tag and trying to lead in WvW (if it’s not already the case)…

Philosophic question about "skill"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Myhr.9108

Myhr.9108

The question is not very good, because the two propositions are not mutually exclusive :
- if the exploit is easy, you can cheat without skill
- on the other hand, a hard exploit will require skill, by definition

And finding an exploit can require skill, in the first place, not in execution, but in research.

A better question would be : “when does exploiting mechanics become cheating?”

Yup, same as Tequatl or any demanding meta-event. Showing up early drastically increases your chances of success. Even Shadow Behemot can fail if you try it at odd hours, at the last moment, in an empty map. If anything, I thing it has more to do with Tangled Depths as a whole, being a somewhat unfriendly and hard-to-navigate map (not that I mind, there are in fact some easy shortcuts for the Meta, but you have to understand the map’s layout first)

Who to take to 80?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Myhr.9108

Myhr.9108

First, let’s agree that we’re talking mainly of open-world PVE, which means no T4 fractals, no raids, and no-rush dungeons. If that’s the case, in my personal experience, anything with a reasonable amount of synergy can work.

Take what I write as some random thoughts of someone who has a level 80 character of each class and also mainly plays open-world PVE.

- Mesmer : it’s my main, and imo the class with the most complex mechanic. That being said, it can be quite tanky and as some awesome utility. Master of the jumping puzzles, and overall always fun to play with the illusions management. People that talk about weak endgame damage generally have high difficulty content in mind, but in open-world PVE, Mesmer does enough damage, and has enough Invulnerability and mobility tools to build quite glassy and still survive quite well. Personally, I don’t really like or use Chronomancer, as it’s mainly used as a support class in group content, and I solo quite a bit in HoTs maps, but its power comes from the traits, especially the ones that generates illusions, even more efficiently than the Illusion trait line, some would argue. Overall, if you like Jumping puzzles, a must.

- Elementalist. Again, they can be built with some tankiness in mind. For me, Staff is the way to go in open PVE. Other options feel too dangerous (daggers) or too single-target (scepter). I love the Tempest, it really makes me think whether I should switch affinity or wait a little for the Overload, and I really like the Shouts, as they create auras, and Auramancer is fun to build, with a surprisingly high number of options between the different traitlines (still talking about open PVE, of course). Warhorn is meh, imo, mainly because you have to renouce Staff to use it.

- Thief. For a looooong time, Thief was my least favorite class. As in, I liked the concept, and the feel of the class, but always struggled to achieve thing and to just…survive, honestly. And the fact that I overall don’t like the Stealth mechanic wasn’t helping, to be honest. Lots of dodges, mobility, and tricks, but I always felt there was something missing. Also, Steal always brings you back in Melee, and I constantly had to switch to some ranged weapon after a few seconds just to survive…
Then I discovered Daredevil, and nothing will ever be the same. ^^ A third Dodge, a healing that restores two dodges on a short CD, a true Block…the possibility to keep doing damage as you dodge…Yeah, that’s how I envisionned Thief! Now I can finally use my Steal to engage and have many tools to stay in melee range all the time! Granted, that class still feels frail, but with almost no “holes” in your active defenses (did I mention a fricking third dodge?)

- Revenant is a weird one. I think that due to the way the class is designed, it may take some time for each player to find a style that suits him/her. Herald brings a lot of tools so convenient that it’s hard (but not impossible) to go back to the base class and enjoy it. Overall, I would recommand using Jallis, whatever build you’re using, because it provides some much needed survivability, and the only really consistant Healing skill (big base healing + condition removal, all utilities are usefull and versatile), and it complements Glint really well (strong and well-rounded utilities, but circumstantial Healing skill) Sadly, as a Condition Revenant, Mallyx is too clunky and the utilities cost too much energy. Haven’t tried Shiro and Ventari that much. Shiro seems good for dealing a lot of damage, and as some nice control tools. Ventari felt interesting in design but annoying to use, dragging the tablet gets repetitive fast, imo.

So here are my 2 cents. Again, I don’t claim to be right or wrong, it’s just my personal experience, but I believe that as long as you don’t try to apply it to specific parts of the game that have more “hardcore” requirements (looking at you, raids) it can be usefull to you. =)

A letter of appreciation.

Yes I will. I still have a ton of fun playing the game, I’m far from having done everything I want, and enjoy every moment of it.

I had two concerns before the annoucement :
- that the level-cap would be raised, rendering all my stuff obsolete. But that’s not happening, so, huge relief.
- a new class would be great. And guess what? We’ll get one.

Now I’m not happy with some of the recent changes (PS and new levelling system), but I love some of them (megaserver and replayable LS) For me, GW2 still goes in the right direction. Far from perfect, but still fun as hell.
