Still too powerful even at 8s, you’re basically giving every class a very slow corrupt boon with no counter (you can’t stop criticals, you can’t even dodge the effects of this sigil because it’s on hit proc). Even though corrupt boon is hard to dodge – it can still be countered somehow via blinds or random dodging when you have a lot of boons up.

Sorry bud, but as much as I respect your play from the past I have to disagree with the general scope of your post.

You cannot isolate this ‘toxicity’ to the sPvP crowd. This toxicity is a symptom of the anonymity of the internet, not of some ultra elitist faction – this is nothing abnormal for a game in modern times. Is it acceptable? No. But that’s a much larger issue.

To be honest, I find it kind of naive for you to even consider that the tiny pre-patch sPvP crowd (which is who I assume you’re addressing) would even be large enough to cause this ‘toxicity’ on its own, as it is now easily dwarfed by the influx of new players. What is actually toxic are these kind of finger pointing posts, instead of writing about how all players in general should treat each other with decency you chose to single out and blame a small group of people, perpetuating the already partisan atmosphere that exists in this game. Xeph, people are jerks sometimes. Plain and simple, it doesn’t matter which aspect of the game they identify themselves with, we all have equal capacity to be an kitten .

In your mini discussion on compassion for other players did you ever consider that maybe the angry kid slinging mud at people during a game is bullied daily at school (or hell, even work). It doesn’t excuse their behaviour, not at all – but like you said everyone has outside influences that may be setting them off on that day. Honestly if you you don’t like what they’re saying do what any sane person would do: report them, block them – move on.

We shouldn’t be trying to pit people against each other with posts like this. I could point out toxicity anywhere in this game (rangers in pve, fractal AR, speed running/full zerk comps), but what good does it do to attempt to shame and alienate a group of players? None. How about we just agree that people need to be kinder in general instead of pointing the finger at one group.

Maybe when we’re done we can all hug each other and roll down a grassy hill like we used to do as kids. Or play this pokeman kitten I hear about sometimes, what the hell is a moltres anyway?

AHH – When I make clones on my mesmer (who is wearing a costume) the clone appears in his regular gear not the costume. Is this intended? or is it a bug? makes it super easy to tell the real mesmer.

mine’s been ongoing for 3 weeks… been troubleshooting everything I can on my end but nothing is coming up. I wonder if it is on ANETs end? My lag is odd though, very intense from about 7pm eastern to 1 am then it subsides (no evidence of traffic shaping or issues with my wiring).

I implore you (ANET) to reconsider putting every character into their PvE gear upon entering the mists after the patch. I have a lot of alts (10 slots total) and I don’t know why I am being punished for this by having to spend up to 10 transmutation charges per character after the patch just to re-equip them into getups they currently have for free.

I can accept the charge system (as much as I dislike it in the mists) but for the love of god that’s potentially 100 charges just to have my skins back? Even with the 1 charge per pvp rank – it just doesn’t cut it.

Please reconsider.

yes, the original guild wars 1 had lots of pvp skills unlocks.

Yes lets just remake GW1 /s. Nobody said the unlock system in GW1 was superior, in fact I see it as a hindrance.

One of this games best selling points in my opinion is that the day you buy the game, you can waltz into the mists and start competing with other players immediately because you have all the same skills, gear and stats.

GW2 removing the need for unlocking skills and grinding out PvP gear was a complete innovation and now they’re undoing that.

If they’re smart they’ll see the universal unlocks as one of their strongest points of sale and think twice about continuing in this direction. I know myself, besides the pay wall Wildstar has – I couldn’t go to another MMO where my access to skills / gear which dictates performance is tied to how much grinding I do.

Stop using the excuse of ‘new players are overwhelmed’.

They aren’t.

You’re adding another tier of grind to sPvP that it just doesn’t need. The best part about this game was its basis of equal footing for every player, new and old.

Please, for the love of god – scrap the skill / stat / rune / sigil unlock idea and keep it to skins and cosmetics.

All is vain.

Great response so far, seems quite overwhelmingly in the favour of not having these kinds of unlocks. Wonder if a dev will chime in? Hopefully they’ll re-think this like ranks.

You shouldnt get big amounts of gold for joining a game when it is already 400 -350 or something like that.

And winning a match “fast”:
Yes, maybe you did an axcellent job when you manage to win fast, however, if you are able to win fast, this also could mean the game is not balanced.
So you also shouldnt be rewareded just because it is 5* rank 40-50 vs 5* rank 1-10

so again I’m punished for something outside of my control (aka matchmaking / lack of leaver system). makes no sense.

Sooo with the rewards update we were promised a flat amount of coin on victory/loss for hotjoin, solo and team queues. Except this isn’t always the case. Why did ANET make this reward scale with time? Why isn’t it an actual flat amount of money like they promised?

I don’t see the reason why people who win a game fast should be rewarded less than if they drew the game out.

Nobody really knows the truth regarding PAX, and I’d rather not get into details or get anybody into trouble. I’m just annoyed that my teammates who carried me weren’t even mentioned within this video that’s supposed to highlight guild wars pvp in 2013.

-All proc on crit traits should be changed to a counter system. What I mean by this is instead of it being a mindless proc on your opponent, let it trigger every few critical hits with a counter on your bar so your enemy knows when to dodge/block. This will promote counter-play which is great for balance. This should also apply to passive traits that apply too much of a benefit without any thought process involved.

What I’ve felt for a long time about these on crit traits is that they should be modelled more like some of the guardian minors and majors. Instead of being a counter or on crit (I am against a counter because seriously the bars are so full of boons and crap I don’t want to be counting numbers in the middle of a crazy particle fight) why not have them act as modifiers to skills? Add x effect or condition on a particular skill – this would make weapon skills more customizable depending on traits. Most importantly it would allow people to dodge things such as incendiary powder and dhuumfire as they would be watching for a particular move and not taking massive damage because they got hit by 1 auto attack.

-Adjust Defensive/Condi amulets. I don’t like the idea of having amulets that are both tanky and provide damage. You’re getting the best of both worlds, this should NEVER happen. You are supposed to take a loss in this game when you spec into something. Whether it be damage, support or bunker. There needs to be give somewhere.

I agree with this, a major part of the problem in my opinion lies with the speed at which conditions can kill / be applied. The time to kill for condi spam is way too fast given the defensive nature of the amulets that the builds stem from. Not to mention the fact that most condi spam comes from aoe that is incredibly difficult/pointless to dodge given low cooldowns (nades/bombs) or near invisibility (necro marks that pop before you even realize they’re there).

- AI/Passive skills should never see the light of day in a tournament. These skills should be available for new players to break into the game but should never be taken seriously. These specs require little thought involved and provide too much benefit.

No arguments here, spirit ranger is boring to play – phantasm mesmer as well.

Absolutely not, I even made a post about it a few days ago. It’s going to create power gaps between players who have the glory/gold to get any new skills which quickly become meta and also forces sPvP players to spend the small amount of gold we’re now earning on something that did not need to be added.

It’s a bad choice, and will only do more to hurt the community by moving everyone off equal footing as time progresses.

As many have mentioned before me this was standard in gw1. It didn’t feel like a gymp it felt soooo great to unlock! It makes you want to play that specific skill you unlocked so as each new skill comes out you gain a deep understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.

You can’t jump the gun and call it a gymp, as the skills won’t even be used in certain metas.

I went back to gw1 after 7 years for HoM, bought expansions and could barely be competitive in PvP because there was such a massive build up of skills I was unable to unlock in PvP without having to grind out daily balthazar faction points from bots or doing hours of pvp. I had to stick to one class combo too because in order to be competitive I had to unlock at least one build, it really pigeonholed me and despite enjoying the PvP I eventually walked as the number of unlocks required was too daunting. It was a tremendous disadvantage and made me completely appreciate just how good it was to have everything unlocked like we do in GW2. In this game I am free to try any class at any time in PvP and explore what it has to offer, and I really enjoy that aspect of it.

I don’t want to build up my entire character but a small sense of unlocks is a very rewarding and balanced approach. It’s quite clearly the choice of the majority or at least the direction chosen by ArenaNet for good reason.

We have this sense of accomplishment and progress through cosmetics. Why change it to a system that can and will introduce skill disparity? It makes no sense to have a game mode whose basis was to keep all players equal and suddenly throw in unlocks that will take this away. They need to improve the cosmetic progression and with the addition of ladders we will have tons to work on that will feel ‘rewarding’.

In all likeliness, returning players will have a big stock of unused skill points to instantly unlock every new interesting skill. And I see enough complaints here about experienced players that get matched with new players and lose to mean that them having or not the new skills won’t matter much since you don’t want to play with them anyway !

I thought I would create a separate topic with regards to the direction ANET is taking with regards to new skills introduced to the game. In the CDI thread that deals with the upcoming reward changes, both John Corpening and Josh Davis had the following to say about upcoming skills:

I would like to open this thread to create discussion regarding this change to the way we have access to skills in sPvP.

Personally I feel that this is the complete wrong direction to go in. Not only does it put new players at a disadvantage when they first enter the mists, it gimps people who have not played for some time (defeating the whole mantra of being able to leave and come back to GW2 without being too far behind). By forcing us to have to unlock new skills as they are released (which will eventually be gold based, according to Josh’s mentioning of Tomes of Knowledge from vendors) they are not only creating a form of vertical progression (people with meta skills vs people without) they are adding in another grind to unlock new skills as well as a slight pay to win (gems to gold for skills faster than players who earn them via playing).

One of the best parts of sPvP in my opinion – and one thing that sets it apart from PvP in any other MMO I’ve played, is the fact that when you enter the mists you are on equal footing with every other player. I want to see this preserved moving forward, as this is the main thing that attracted me to it in the first place.

I can see how maybe the unlock system is a slight attempt to monetize sPvP by getting players with little patience or time to buy gems to convert to gold in order to unlock more skills. Don’t get me wrong, I realize ANET is a business and more cash flow from the gem store to sPvP will aid in its development but I really think if they want us to have progression in terms of skills they should consider implementing a system involving unique skill skins. These could be re-colourings, festive skins or anything the art team could dream up. They could not only be potentially earned through sPvP ranks / gold etc but also possibly added to the gem store as individual purchases.

I hope that in the future any form of skill based progression in sPvP will be purely cosmetic and not prevent players from having access to all skills at all times regardless of financial status or time played. Access to skills is paramount to competition in sPvP and competition is what keeps a community and game healthy, happy and most importantly alive.

Thank you for the clarification, but I must object to this system. I really do think this will create vertical progression in a sense – basically if you don’t have the gold (which is what the tomes will eventually cost) you won’t be able to buy the skills you need for whatever meta is in place. Having meta skills is important to remaining competitive, putting a gold barrier to skills in a game mode whose foundation is based on every player coming to the table with equal loadouts (it didn’t like my other word) seems almost unintuitive. I see John’s point in not wanting to overwhelm players, but I also think that you should be giving us the benefit of the doubt in terms of what we’re capable of handling at first glance. The PvP community in GW2 provides many detailed guides that would be great for new players to sift through limitless numbers of skills. I am just worried this system could lead to having to farm gold to buy skills to be competitive.

The only part that upsets me is the retiring of rank based pvp finishers. So basically all the skyhammer farmers get to keep rank finishers while people like me who only get rank from tPvP will miss out? seems sort of unfair.
