The former game director of Diablo 3 seems to have admitted to their AH being a bad influence on the game. What is your thought on this? How does it translate to GW2 or does it do so at all?

Former Diablo 3 Game Director Jay Wilson admitted during a talk at GDC 2013 in San Francisco that both of Diablo 3’s Auction Houses (both the real-money and the in-game gold item auction house) “really hurt the game.” Wilson said that before Blizzard launched the game, the company had a few assumptions about how the Auction Houses would work: He thought they would help reduce fraud, that they’d provide a wanted service to players, that only a small percentage of players would use it and that the price of items would limit how many were listed and sold.

But he said that once the game went live, Blizzard realized it was completely wrong about those last two points. It turns out that nearly every one of the game’s players (of which there are still about 1 million per day, and about 3 million per month, according to Wilson) made use of either house, and that over 50 percent of players used it regularly. That, said Wilson, made money a much higher motivator than the game’s original motivation to simply kill Diablo, and “damaged item rewards” in the game. While a lot of the buzz around the game attacked the real money Auction House, “gold does much more damage than the other one does,” according to Wilson, because more players use it and prices fluctuate much more.

“I think we would turn it off if we could,” Wilson said during his talk. But the problem is “not as easy as that;” with all of Blizzard’s current players, he says the company “has no idea” how many players like the system or hate it. Blizzard, Wilson said, doesn’t want to remove a feature that lots of players will be unhappy to see go. But he did say that the team is working on a viable solution, without giving any other details about what that would be like.

They’ll probably hit the grenade kit a bit. Other than that, it probably won’t affect us much. Maybe it will even get us a bit more in line with other classes (with everyone else being hit harder than we will).
Well, at least that’s what I hope for… but instead, they’ll probably just decrease the damage of grenades, bombs and the flamethrower by a flat 50% or so.

People should never be put into overflow on their own server. If someone guests on a server and they map is full, they should always be put into overflow when trying to join an overcrowded zone on the guesting server.
Simple as that.

However, I fear people will come crying about how they can’t play with their friends that way… I’d really like to know if the number of players that team up with cross-server friends is actually that high. I suspect the overwelming majority of guests are just farming boss events.

The Tools trait line

It may not seem like it at first, but 30 (or 25) in Tools is quite potent because of the 10% damage increase + the stuff mentioned by Kimbald.
It is a good base for rifle builds and many others while leaving your utility slots open that would be blocked by elixirs for most other builds.

For example, 10/20/0/10/30 rifle/EG/x/x is kinda fun in PvE…

However, all of this is based on passive boni, kits etc. and not around gadgets or the tool kit…

Dredge Fractal now impossible

It was a stupid encounter to begin with, but spy kits were even worse. In the longest fractal to boot…

Undodgeable (can’t jump off the switch) high damage ranged attacks from mobs with lots of hp and permanent protection… they should just remove the protection and fury spam the dredge mobs do.
That way their attacks would at least be a bit more survivable and you could kill those ugly things.

Not for all content… but for some content, they could surely add them.
For example story mode dungeons would benefit a lot from having them. After all, who does those anymore? Maybe not make it 1 player 4 heroes, but 2 players 3 heroes so some puzzles etc. can be cleared easier and people don’t play with just bots.
Maybe also decrease rewards when using heroes in there… so people really just use them to get the story/gating content.

For fractals, explorables, wvw/pvp/outside pve they shouldn’t be used.

Oh and also make them as annoying as possible. Everyone should get 2x Logan and 2x Trahearne!

New Bomb Kit skill - Explosive Charge

When I opened this thread, I was expecting something more like making #1 stick to an enemy when used in melee range or making it a trait…

If you want to replace glue bomb, it should just be like jump shot but create a slow field at your target locating (or maybe both starting location and target location).

Conditions simply need a redesign and/or rebalancing. One person putting up 15+ conditions is simply far too much with the current design.

Of course they could simply decrease the number and duration of bleeds everyone causes and drastically increase bleed scaling so we end up around the same dps. As for poison and fire… they’re simply poor design because at least fire can be locked down by one person permanently (cough eles cough) and thus locked down for everyone else. Maybe those should be switched to intensity scaling, too?
This would probably be much easier to balance/design/program than other solutions.

It is actually pretty easy. However, most people don’t understand how standing on the edge of a platform and running to its other side saves them when “circles are bigger than platforms”…
After all why move when you can just revive, do 10 k damage and then revive again? -.-

I found a rare Wildfire Talisman in CoF explo, path 2, from the jailer boss.

I salvaged it with a master salvage kit and received an Embellished Brilliant Chrysocola Jewel Kit.

I’m a jewelcrafter, so I tried crafting something out of it. I should be able to combine it with a mithril setting and one mithril chain/band/hook. If I do so in the discovery tab, I can combine it with those items and it says that it looks like something, but I can’t click the craft button (see screenshot).

Happened to me once, too… those areas are really huge and they contain parts of the fractals. So it is probable that all of them are inside one vast zone and events/mobs are only spawned as needed.

As an alternative, there are also sites that resell codes (game licenses/virtual currency cards) from other countries and send them to you via email.

I won’t name any of them, though. I’ve also read allegations of them being able to claim your account (steam etc.) because they still have the physical copy of the code… though nothing has happened to me (yet?).

For many people this has become a way to bypass country- or region-locked prices or prices that were kept high artificially (see CoD-prices). Though the price difference in case of gems is much smaller and probably not worth the effort.

Charr is kind of annoying because they switch to running on all four legs. Then their hitbox doesn’t really fit their animations… on most jumping puzzles you can just shoot/slash at the open air to get some seconds of guaranteed 2-legged movement. But for the clock tower it was pretty horrible.

As for classes… some classes got abilities that allow you to make jumping puzzles easier or even “cheat” on them (engineer jump shot, mesmer blink).

For some bosses, it certainly is an interesting mechanic that potentially leaves a lot of room for coordinating for a good benefit.
However, I think that some mobs get way too many stacks of it. In content for groups of 5 it should never go over 5 or so.
Why should anyone even care pushing down the stacks when the mob gets 12 of them?

An example are the endbosses of the dredge fractal. In theory, you can knock down the stacks and then interrupt their heal. Instead, most groups just continue shooting it. Sometimes they have someone with daze (or was the interrupt effect that bypasses it something else?) or someone using poison at the right moment…
But normally, just continue shooting.

Med Kit Refinement = BOOM!?

It is annoying for other people since I play without sound… though having something else would definately make sense. Maybe go down the buff route of the medkit? Or what about giving you 10or5% more healing for 3 seconds after swapping to encourage swapping before healing yourself?

Though we really have problems elsewhere that need to be adressed. Kit refinement is already an awesome trait. If I’d have to choose between getting this changed and something else, i’d prefer other stuff to be fixed.

20 firearms (sitting duck, rifle mods)
10 alchemy (25% elixir S)
30 tools (pretty flexible there)

Suggested gear: Mainly knight’s with ruby orbs, emerald earrings with exquisite ruby orbs (if you can afford it, but exquisite emeralds are great, too). But the whole setup also works with some pwr/vit/tough in there so feel free to test around.
Suggested food: mango pies or omnom berry pies

Medkit: 14 sec cd heal + emergency medpacks + cond removal if needed + swiftness/fury? Simply awesome.

With your major traits in tools and your utility skills you are really quite flexible. You can really pick from those as you please:
-Kit Refinement (IV) with elixir gun: dual super elixirs cond removal + support healing + 1400/11 sec regen + acid bomb in combo with jump shot
-static discharge (II) with rifle turret/toolkit/seestatdischargebuildthreadsforalternatives
-packaged stimulants if you feel funky. It doesn’t state it but it turns medkit’s stimulants into 16 sec duration + 15 sec cooldown swiftness + fury (you seem to love that boon ;D ) compared to standard 11 sec/20 sec. This leaves you pretty open with your utility skill selection so you can swap as needed, take one for the team (elixir R) or just take elixir B
-adrenal implant (XII) for great endurance regen

suggested: IV, II, XII with elixir gun, rifle turret, tool kit. I’m currently running this and simply love it. Though feel free to test around.

bonus: you can switch out one of your tools traits (most often switch out XII) for speedy kits (VI) or packaged stimulants (VII) for permanent swiftness when running around outdoors or through dungeons

Well, I believe you when you say that there is no “bad/good loot flag” anywhere. However, I’ve had some very bad luck with loot myself. I’m mainly talking about my bad luck of getting (or rather not getting) any ascended rings for a long time to the point where I could not progress any further with my guild.

So… tell me, what is used as the seed for your RNG? You should probably have someone take a close look into that.

What about going 10 elixirs/30 tools? You could get 50% endurance regen to dodge more between your cooldowns or you could get additional retaliation after being crit (though the cooldown is a bit long). Though you’d have to weigh that up vs. the regen from backpack regenerator… hm…

About the sigils… are you sure that 20% longer burning is worth it? 120% of a 1 s burn is still just one tick, though I don’t know if the decimal is kept for calculation of totals (condition time on bleed builds can be tricky, too… though that one stacks intensity).

What I don’t like about it is that it is completely account-based. I have 3 level 80 characters and I want a laurel necklace for at least two of them. Maybe even several of them for at least one char when I’m switching my gear…

Other than that I’m fine with it. It is a long term goal you can work towards in easy and fast steps… though I’d really like being able to do that on each of my characters…

Love the damage of the Acid Bomb from Elixir gun but don’t always want it to launch you back because foes (the AI) move out of it? Press the “~” key as soon as youre in the air and it stops the fly back but still spreads the Acid

Huh… how? What is bound to ~ on your keyboard? Do you mean weapon switch to put the bundle away? That’s ^, well at least on my keyboard x)

Other things: You can switch kits while some attacks are being cast. E.g. going from flamethrower (long attack, so easier to do) to another kit shouldn’t cancel the flame thrower’s attack if timed right.

Right now it is not much of a problem. Just use Cavalier’s (pwr, tough, critdmg%) items. It comboes very nicely with knight’s gear and fury and has some of the best critdmg% for stat tradeoff rates in the game.

However, if they add (much?) more ascended gear, this will somewhen become a problem, this is true. So for future updates they should really consider making some items with knight’s stats. Doesn’t even need to be pure knight’s. They could have the same precision as exotic knight’s items and add a little vit or something instead.

Need advice - rifle dungeon PvE / WvW build

I’m using the rifle in PvE/Fractals because I can’t stand grenades. Works pretty fine and with some switching you can do a lot of stuff with it.
It might look strange but I like surviving, so here is what I currently use:

Just a half Static Discharge build with the elixir gun + kit refinement and a few points for survival. Equip is a mix of knight’s and berserker’s, with ruby orbs in most sockets. It isn’t really max damage but I seem to survive a lot of stuff with it that other people seem to die in. Well, maybe they don’t dodge enough or whatever.
You can also move 10 points to explosives for additional damage, but I don’t really like burns because I always get elementalists in my groups that stack an hour or so…

Food For Thought: Armor Classes & Threat

One thing that is annoying about the aggro system as an engineer: I have quite a bit of toughness so I don’t die as easily. However, when I’m in a group with 2 warriors and 2 guardians and the mobs chase me around instead of at least some of them attacking the heavy armor users (I guess all of them full berserker’s), then something is really fudged up in the aggro calculations.

Love the ascalon fractal. Warrior pulls, I wait 3 secs and shoot one mob with my rifle, all the warrior/fighter mobs charge me…

Then just use another rune. There are many cheaper ones out there and you can also use crests and jewels, which are extremely cheap and give more stats than most runes, especially some of the cheapest (in stat budget) +crit damage% in the game.

If you want to use healing turret, try putting it up and detonating it 0.5 seconds later to cause a blast finisher on its initial water field. Seems to be much more effective for me because you’ll get it back sooner (higher self-heal) while providing 1.4 k or so in AoE healing.
Also works by putting up the turret, using its overdrive and then detonating it in that combo field.

Alright guys lets fix our own class.

Turn Engineer elites into normal utility skills. Change the elite skill slot to a utility skill slot (or a slot that can only accept kits, no big difference). Wouldn’t even need a toolbelt skill for that slot.

A few thoughts about what I’d like to see for rocket boots (ofc not all at once):
-Rocket kick jumps higher (for style) and gives 1 second of evasion: Much like those attacks many flying mobs (fire elementals, griphons) have. Would fit the style, though damage probably wouldn’t be so great or cd increased to 30 sec :/
-Rocket boots targetable by direction (“skillshot”)
-Rocket Kick could get a 0.5 second (or so) projectile reflect like the flamethrower’s air blast

Though in theory it isn’t a bad skill per se, most builds just benefit more from other stuff than from taking the very situational and unreliable rocket boots.
Overall, none of the gadgets is neither great nor bad… imo, it just feels like they lack support in the form of traits. I think the only trait benefiting them is the 20% cd reduction in Tools (that doesn’t work on their tool belt skills, which would be great). If there were more traits for them, they might be a little better…

Steam punk medium armors for engineers

I agree that there could really be some greater variety in medium armors.

However, it is really dependant on your race, gender and color choice. Armor, especially medium armor, tends to look very different on charr or azura characters when compared to humans/trees.
So an armor that might look good on azura might look horrible on charr or armor dyed blue or brown might look more fitting than when dyed the black/white/red most people seem to prefer.

I like my selected armor on my azura. Got a defensive set of AC+karma armor that has a sturdy riveted leather look and a more offensive armor set that mainly consists of a nice jeans-colored coat + lots of belts/buckles.

No idea if you can call that exactly steampunk but I still like it.

Sometimes, conserving one crystal for the group if there are no other crystals around can be beneficial to the goal (killing it at all). Especially with so many people still not able to dodge properly.
Of course there are also people who never seem to have grasped the strategy behind that encounter.

So it really depends on the situation. Both throwing it instantly and not throwing it can hurt you.

Toyed around with it a little and can’t decide between a defensive build and an offensive build. I especially don’t know which runes and sigils to use with it.
Tell me what you thing about it… maybe I undervalue 25 in explosion (seems to stack to nearly constant 7 vulnerability) in them, what do you think?
Only tested them outside, so no dungeon/fractal tests up to now.

Defensive build: 20/0/30/20/0
Healing Turret, Bombs, Elixir R, open slot
Pistol/shield for dual sigils and shield’s skill, equip knight’s+soldier’s, maybe with rubies, mango pies for additional regen
All the passive healing really stacks up pretty nicely, damage is not great but at least you’re durable. Regenerating Mist (2000 over 10) + Big Ol’ Bomb/Supply Crate comboes for additional AoE healing (~1470) with some timing, Healing Turret + Explode Healing Turret comboes for more AoE healing.
Power Shoes keeps mobility in-combat.
Unsure about the third utility skill slot. Maybe Elixir gun for another 10of40 secs of regeneration plus the option to use #4 for escape and #5 for some additional healing/cd removal? Hm… that’d probably fit it. Or some elixir or even mines? Hm…

Offensive build: 20/20/0/0/30
Medkit, Elixir Gun, Bombs, Elixir R
Rifle to keep ranged DPS and control, Knight’s+Soldier’s gear with rubies, Mango Pies or lifesteal food
Pretty glassy, but the toughness equip, the low cd F1 heal, the healing mist from Elixir Gun, dual Super Elixir and if all else fails the, the medkit, should keep you alive.
Plus the ranged damage is pretty good. Compared to my rifle build (10/30/0/0/30, pretty much the same setup) the rifle dps seems to be roughly the same, the bomb dps of course is higher because of having the same multipliers and a higher power coefficient.
Mobility is boosted by speedy kits and #4 of rifle and elixir gun. 50% more endurance regen helps with both mobility and survival.
Playstyle is kinda interesting with a lot of kit swaps for super elixirs as well as rifle #2(sitting duck),#3,#5.
Really thinking about testing this setup with (25/20/0/0/25) in fractals… 10% less crit dmg and the lost endurance regen might hurt, though. On the other hand, 6-7 vulnerability -assuming you don’t have to go ranged too often- are a huge (party) dps increase.

Other than that… Kit Refinement for the bomb kit doesn’t seem to work properly, no idea if it is in the bug list already. Each swap places a bomb but only every third or fourth or so actually deals damage.

Imo, build for power and toughness and completely scrap +healing. No matter where, +healing never seems to be worth it. If you want to play bombs, just go for dps and take the healing as a side aspect rather than the core of the build.

I can’t watch the video because of copyright blahrgh but I ask myself: Why does every single engineer rifle thread have to be derailed to “omg warrior rifle is so much better than our rifle because they can do a 20 k crit with 20+ stacks of might”?

I play a warrior. I play an engineer, one with a very similar build in fact. And guess what? Their playstyle is very different, especially when going for those aimed shots and both are fine (though might stacking will surely receive a hit in the future).
What is not fine about the engineer? Most of the other non-rifle stuff. Rifle is in a good place atm. It surely isn’t head of the line but overall it isn’t bad either.

Other than that, good to see rifles actually used a little more, even if the grenade changes weren’t as much of a catastrophe as people sometimes paint it out to be.

The OP’s post sounds like he doesn’t salvage blue and white drops. Salvaging blue and white light armor items should yield a lot more wool than just 5 per 3 hours.

Favorite Food?

What is people’s favorite food? People only seem to be using omnomberry bars, if anything at all. But personally I’ve found Mango Pies, Truffle Ravioli and of course omnom ghosts/pies to be quite useful. I guess their usefulness varies on build etc. but what other foods are kind of undervalued in your opinion?

Just add a trait that makes the cooldown reduction from picking up turrets 75% instead of 25% (except for Healing Turret maybe).

Engineer Rifle

I kind of like the rifle. Its damage when compared to my warrior’s rifle is pretty good, overall I’d say their damage is about even when they stay at max range and engineer’s is a bit higher when I can go in a bit closer. Overall, it also feels very versatile, though the warrior can certainly just switch to melee weapons when confronted close up.
The only difference is that my warrior can buff himself permanently with fury and 5-8 stacks of might from For Great Justice (also buffs group) and Signet of Rage. I love those two skills so much that I cringe when I have warriors in my group that don’t use FGJ.

I’d say its damage is pretty average amongst classes and it should probably be the dps-balancing goal for our other kits (it should probably be wrench~bombs>>FT>rifle=pistols>~elixir gun).

However, I’d like Rifled Barrels to increase Blunderbuss’s range to 600 or 700 or so instead of just 400->500 because those are a bit more practical and also increase Jump Shot’s AoE radius to 200 instead of just increasing the jump range.
Another thing that should go is the ~1.5 second knockdown on #4 (and on rocket boots). Maybe make it a daze so we still can’t attack but at least we can start moving again instead of being grounded by your own escape skill.

Random effects are simply horrible design. It would be ok if there was a trait to make it give all of those buffs but randomness is never a good thing. Instead of trying this randomness kitten, they should simply have decided on 1-2 effects that are always the same instead of putting 10 different ones that are randomly activated on each one.

Randomness just isn’t worth it. It doesn’t add any value beyond the first 5 uses for fluff reasons. Even if 9 out of 10 times a player gets a buff that is somehow (even just a bit) usefull for him, the 10th use that gives him exactly what he doesn’t need can ruin all of that “fun” if that player dies because of it.

I fixed a mistake that was causing crits to be too important, which dwarfed the FT’s burn damage and gave the rifle an advantage (because of the weapon stats). This also fixed the DPS being too high by a factor of 10-20orwhatever. As such, many of my conclusions are incorrect. I’m leaving them up there anyways, new results are in this post.

My newest numbers show, that at about 19 might stacks, the FT is equal to the rifle’s DPS. At higher might stacks, the FT deals more damage. Keep in mind, that this is for my build and those numbers are without the 10%/15% multipliers from traits.
If I’d go 20 into elixirs, I’d also lose some power and some crit damage, so numbers for that would also look a bit different. Using runes for might stacking would also decrease my base stats. Overall, it will probably even out around 25 stacks or so.

This means, that the flamethrower is “viable” if used with a might stacking build. However, with high stacks of might the rifle would gain some ground because of its higher multiplier, so a build based around stacking might, then switching to Rifle, would yield the best results (see that juggernaut pvp build posted on these boards a few days ago). I’m also expecting this to be much more interesting to play than sticking to one of the two and would also be quite flexible.
Overall, the FT builds seem to require a lot more commitment in gear, rune and trait choice than simply shooting your rifle.

Why did you post this trash if you:
1. dont account for any of the reasons you use Ft over other weapons or kits. abilities, procs chances
2. your build for is all wrong. Fun fact the 25 point alchemy ability increases damage by 1% per stack of might

These stay out of theory craft if you arnt going to be serious about it. All you have done today is set the engineer community back months as idiots now can point to your useless misinformation and scream to the high heaven like it was fact.

I completely understand your sentiment but also want to emphasize, that there is a severe lack of theorycraft on these forums. Now we are at least discussing about it which is a much better state than before with everyone being uncertain about which build to use because of the grenade changes.
Furthermore, one cannot be always right, as you can see in my more recent conclusions.
However, as to your other points mentioned:
1. Other abilities: Rifle#3 and #5 both have very high coefficients, just as FT#2 (if a perfect hit). Using either of those, however, requires quite some mobility and other circumstances not always given in a fight and even then the autoattack damage is still the largest portion of the damage. As above, a build using both can probably make good use out of both their strengths.
2. Your trait is all wrong. And of course my build is wrong, because it doesn’t use either of the multipliers to keep it simple. Overall, it is just and approximation. This is also why I didn’t mention numbers in my posts other than the required number of might stacks.

As for “setting people back”, no effort of mine could set the “engineer community” back further than it already is. As I mentioned, there is a severe lack of calculations on these boards. Condemning people for trying to make the best out of the scarce information available isn’t exactly changing things for the better either but just keeping people in the dark.
Other than that, please refrain from using such an agressive posting style. It doesn’t help anyone here.
