On the contrary, I would say that what minimizes the total sum of what people are typing should be the norm and is what makes sense. If the majority want 80-only runs, then omission should be the norm.

Once again, sub-80 charas do not need to be carried. If you truly believe that, then yes, you are an elitist.

That being said if you wish to run 80-only runs, specify that in your LFG. Everyone else should not need to post ‘sub-80 ok’ to get a group. The norm should be acceptance, not exclusion.

How did you become the arbiter of how LFG posts should be made?

This level discrimination has got to stop!…
I will grab anyone whos willing to listen and play the game.
Additionally, somepeople hit 80 without ever seeing a single dungeon so that person will die alot more than a lvl 38 thief…

And having experience with thieves in dungeons (ran one myself for ages) I would offer tips to the lvling thief should he/she not know the finer points of a dungeon from a thief PoV (and yes, its a lot different to running a guard or a mesmer)

for me fun>lvl80MustHaveSmoothRun

Why are people so intent on controlling the actions of others? I want fast and easy runs with fellow level 80s to speedily acquire tokens. You are happy with slower runs with sub80s – great for you! Why try and impose your preferences on others?

Arah Path 3 Hot Potato

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

I ran an Arah path 3 over the weekend and meant to post this earlier, but here goes! The part just before Lupicus where you have to pass the corrosive balls to open the doors seems changed. When we were running this, we were not able to have the ball successfully pass unless the thrower and target were pretty much overlapping. Whenever I had the green ground targeting circle on someone even a bit off of me, the pass would fail. It is still doable and seems more like passing a baton, but I think it is somewhat unintuitive – why have a ground targeting when it does not work? Also, I do remember in the past being able to pass some distance. Have others experienced this?

Btw, anyone else noticed that there is now culling in pve as well? I never had that happening before (I think)!

Culling has existed in PvE for a very long time. In my recollection, whenever I was in a huge zerg to take the Temple of Balthazar, people and mobs would sporadically vanish and then reappear.

The "Queue Bug", a theory as to the cause

in WvW

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

I think that the OP made a legitimate conjecture. I do not think anyone will dispute that several servers got very stacked, and we are all very aware of the changes that have been made to culling behavior! The question then is whether these two events have sufficiently colored people’s perception into believing that something is amiss where there is no actual problem. Personally, I have no clue as to the truth behind things, but I am leaning toward the camp that something is wrong. After thinking about this a little my conclusion can be summed up as:

1. If there were no problem, the OP’s points while valid would not influence people to the extent that they would think very significant bugs existed (they would just complain).

2. If there existed a “small” bug, the OP’s points in conjuction with this bug could definitely push many people over the threshhold from complaining to thinking that something was wrong.

The "Queue Bug", a theory as to the cause

As a mathematician, I think the key mistake you are making Mr. GottFaust is not understanding the difference between a conjecture and a theorem. The title of this topic is “The real reasons for the queue bug;” however, you present speculation not proof. If the title were “A theory on the queue bug” I am certain that people here would be more receptive to your ideas.

Personally, I have no desire to run any dungeon with a pug that is not level 80. They could be fantastic players, but there is no way to determine this predungeon. Guildies and friends, on the other hand, are a different story! Creating an arbitrary restriction such as level 30 is pretty unnecessary in my opinion as you get to decide who you group with.

Cliffside - Level 20+, how?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

My team was able to get past this one after a bunch of wipes the other night. What finally worked for us was having our rogue shadow refuge the team after hitting the seal with the hammer. The boss deaggro’d and we were able to pull/clear the room without respawns before reengaging. Also, the seal does not reset to full hp unless your team wipes and does retry from checkpoint. Other than that, phase 2 with the white flashes is the hardest thing, but I just tanked the diviner far away from the group. Here I can see how this could get nasty on higher difficulty, but I have 30 agony resist and we were just doing the lvl 20 daily. If you can get past the white flashes, the remaining phases are way easier – just use the shadow refuge to deaggro clear after each seal hit.

Community's Voice: Dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Plato.6128

I think that there are definitely some very creative suggestions above, I especially like the idea of putting DEs inside dungeons. As a bit of an off-topic note before I get started, my only complaint in terms of dungeons, besides bugs, is that too many bosses have too many hit points! The difficulty level is fine in my opinion, I just feel that some fights are too drawn out – if you can kill a boss in 10 minutes, nerfing it to 5 is just changing the dungeon’s pacing not difficulty.

Back to the relevant topic. I still run a dungeons now and then primarily to help friends and guildies, though not as much as I did when gearing up. After acquiring the skins they were a lot of people I know are pretty much finished with them; though a number of people in my guild speed clear as their farming method. The two big PvE things now are fractals (obviously!) and the ever ongoing legendary farm. From my perspective here, I’ve already finished my Twilight, and am now taking a very relaxed pace towards a Juggernaut. While revamping dungeons and making them more fun is definitely a great thing, I think you need to also lure in the crowd that is farming for their legedaries. I still need to run SE for the gift of quicksilver, but other than that, even if you totally revamped CM, I would probably still rather work on getting my Juggernaut than running this theoretical CM 2.0 – unless there was new fantastic loot!

A very simple idea to align these causes

1. Make more items purchasable for dungeon tokens:

The things that would get people to show up are: a small bundle of T6 mats, vials of liquid karma (especially now with Plinx RIP), maybe even lodestones (this might be too much). As a caveat here, since some dungeons are significantly easier than others (AC vs Arah!), prices should be different depending on the dungeon tokens being used. For pricing, make this comparable but not superior to other farming methods.

Two other very simple suggestions, but in a different vein from the first:

2. Dungeon Daily:

This is obviously taken from WoW and SWTOR. There already is a regular daily (and I love the jug of karma), but maybe add in a quest to complete a specific dungeon path for some sort of useful reward. I think that a karma jug is too much (maybe not if said path was Arah path 4!), but the reward can be scalable to the path’s difficulty. The downside of this suggestion is that there might be tooo many dailies, but as long as people are having fun doing them that should be a good thing.

3. Mini-Dungeon Daily:

I remember going to Vexa’s lab, and I think that mini-dungeon was really well-designed. The problem though is that people are lazy! I always have been meaning to check out more of these mini-dungeons, but other things are always higher on my agenda. The point here though is to get people out of Lion’s Arch to check out the great content you’ve made and reward them with a cookie.

Third stat: Condition or Critdamage?

in Warrior

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

I would say that condition damage is not that useful unless you really want to focus on bleeds as a source of damage in your build. If this is the case, I would point you to Yojack’s guide in this forum. The idea behind that build is that you can run all rampager’s gear (power/precision/cond), and use regeneration from your adrenaline (talent) + heal signet + sup. sigil of blood in your weapons to give a really good amount of tankiness/survivability. Your bleeds tick pretty high – I was getting about 95 a tick if I remember correctly, and you can stack them pretty fast. It is definitely very viable/good when I tried it out, but was really not what I was going for. On the contrary, if you are not really going for an all out condition build, I think you would be better off going crit damage. Getting a few points more of damage on bleeds when you are not focused on putting many stacks on your target is not going to have much effect.

What Guild Wars 2 can learn from DARK SOULS

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

Aren’t Dark Souls and Guild Wars 2 two completely different games…?

Yeah, one is challenging and rewarding PvE and one is something I need to afk with autoattack for 10 minutes each elite

You go afk with autoattack on Alpha or Giganticus without dying, and show me a profession with an elite that has a 10 minute cooldown.

Also, why are you playing a game you don’t enjoy over a game you do enjoy? Your other game is over there.——>

I think that he was using hyperbole. I think that GW2 has some well-designed encounters and some ones that are kind of uninteresting. The two you pointed out are in my opinion among the well-designed fights in this game, so I see where you are coming from. On the contrary though, take HotW. I run this instance a lot to help guildies get their power/vit/tough gear. Obviously, the OP’s comments were exaggeration, but standing around auto attacking for 10 minutes is sometimes how that dungeon feels! None of the encounters in HotW are exceptionally difficult, but a bunch of the bosses have so much hp that the fights just feel very time consuming. This is obviously my subjective outlook, but if you cut their health pools by 20%, it wouldn’t change the difficulty there much at all but would just make the timing of the place feel better.

On the whole though, I think we should all be rooting for more interesting bosses! What is done is done, and even though some of these older dungeons might get patched, it is probably more realistic just to look forward to new content like this upcoming fractal dungeon. The fact that the description of this place says that it gets harder the more you run it sounds pretty cool. I hope that harder does not mean cheap 1-shot tactics, but rather things you can learn to play around.

As I note, and I don’t know if someone already addressed this (a lot of replies to this post), getting Hodgins killed can reset him in terms of his being bugged, although I can’t say if this is a 100% solution. As an example, a few runs ago we got to the door before collecting the scepter pieces, and Hodgins was just standing there and wouldn’t open the door/continue with the event. We pulled a nearby graveling pack into him and let him die. Upon ressing him he started the event to collect pieces and opened the door. I hope that this helps.

I have to say that I feel very lucky. My guild, Absolute Legends [AL] (Tarnished Coast) runs Balthazar whenever a guildie is ready to complete their legendary. Having that many people come out to help me finish my Twilight just feels very good! One thing, what is up with these people who don’t want to run back? Last time we were there, I was explaining to all the randoms in map chat that they should take the WP back to Rally Point and run back. Several people got into this whole argument with me revolving around “we don’t leave people behind” etc etc. Sometimes being on the unofficial RP server has its downsides.

Hello Mr. Shamrocky. When you complete the event, you will still see 378 next to the gold ribbon on the top right of your screen, but you also see your gains quickly flash across the screen upon completing the event (hard to catch!). If you have all your bonuses – booster, guild bonus, banner bonus – you should be seeing 600-something per event.

Tokens for a legendary? What now?

Oh yes I am a guardian and it appears I have been doing it wrong! yes I was using a greatsword the whole time, it has the MF sigil on it. I will defiantly invest in a staff now. What is the name of the flat magic find sigil? I didnt know there was one :O

I just checked my guardian’s farm set and I might have mislead you with some BS lol! I use the accuracy (5% crit) sigil in my staff and a luck (stacking mf) sigil in my farming great sword. Idk why I thought there was a magic find version of the flat.

My mistake aside, PLEASE try the staff, you will love it! Greatsword is an awesome weapon, but staff rules for farming. You will not be the first person I have converted to this point of view :P.

Actually in retrospect, might as well put the luck sigil in the staff too. Sometimes trying to min/max by building the stacks on the GS first is too much of a headache. I think I might just change this on my own set as well.

Don’t give up Mr. Swiftpaw! Legendaries are a total PITA but getting my twilight was so worth it. As a quick tip since you said that you were not making much buck in CS (we also call cursed shore “the office” in our guild), don’t be stingy about using omnomberry bars. The gold pick up buff it gives is actually pretty worth it. The bar (usually 2s or so) should pay for itself in copper drops (usually 50-70c) within a plinx chain if you aoe tag well and have a bit of luck. I used to be cheap and only use peach tarts, but I see the difference. The proceeds add up (plus you get slightly better magic find) and every copper counts in your quest.

That’s miss swiftpaw to you!

Oh the bars huh? yes I was being very stingy about it! I was using the tarts! XD I do think my tagging is not very good and I plan to work on that in between my dungeon runs. Everytime I see someone with twilight/dawn it spurs me on to keep trying thanks for the tip <3

Lol my bad Miss Swiftpaw! I don’t know what class you are, but if your tagging is not working well, try some different weapons out! Remember that you don’t have to kill mobs on your own, especially if there is a cursed shore zerg going on. I have a guardian and a warrior (twilight is on the warrior). Staff on guardian = win for farming. You can just run around and spam 1 and tag everything with your light wave of win. For warrior, longbow is ok since you can tag a big group with the F1 aoe, and then swap to GS to also aoe with 3. The 2 on longbow is ok aoe is ok but not that impressive for farming.

One more thing, remember that since you have 2 weapon sets, that means you can use 2 different sigils. Use the luck sigil on your secondary weapon, and the flat magic find sigil on your primary weapon. Build the stacks of magic find on the secondary weapon and they still stay even if you are on your primary.

Just my 2c – already having finished my Twilight. Assuming that you are going for a great sword, I’m assuming that you are running AC. AC in itself is really good cash for a short time investment if you get into a group that knows how to speed run it (all 3 paths finished in combined time of less than an hour). The end boss of a path usually drops what is it 26s (can’t think of it off the top of my head) plus you get the extra silver (22s?) + tokens + karma for finishing the path. Also, you should have plenty of crap to vendor/sell on the TP. Obviously, get your gift of ascalon first, and then buy any tanking armor/weapons that you are missing (or just for fun/trying out different weapon sets!), but after all of this is done I don’t see why you wouldn’t try to forge the GS’s. If you buy the exotics, your results will be exotic (not rare as you suggested), so if you had bad luck keep that resultant and just wait until you get 3 more (which might also be obtained from rare forgings).

If you are running AC solely for the reason to farm tokens for the forge I can see how this might be painful – a long time of saving tokens for a single forge attempt. If you just view it as a quick daily cash cow with the tokens as a by-product it is not bad at all.

The players on the forums and the subreddit complaining about deminishing returns are a vocal minority that have a problem of entitlement.

This statement really rubs me the wrong way. I do not see how complaining about diminishing returns implies that an individual has a problem of entitlement. Entitlements refer to rights, for instance do we have an entitlement to free health care? I do not think anyone has said that there is a right or a moral imperative to be given loot (or karma which is my gripe); however, this game is an entertainment service that people have paid for. As a customer who paid for this service, if I do not like how something is being done I do not think that expressing my displeasure amounts to a problem of entitlement.

Let's Start the Karma DR Dialogue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Plato.6128

Plato.6128

The way karma DR has been implemented has made me a very angry customer. I am not an avid forum poster, but I feel the strong need to express my dissatisfaction. Apologies to sanadin as I do not want to derail your thread, but this seems a good place to write my thoughts.

Up until this point there have been many flaws in the game, but there was nothing that could not be waited out or played around: for instance the nonfunctional trading post for weeks on end, broken skill points (grab them on a server reset!), broken events, etc. For the goals I had in mind for this game though, namely finishing a legendary, the karma DR really just feels like a screw you from Anet. Considering the fact that I liberally bought gems for boosts, bag space on my main and alts, bank space, etc., to support this company makes me feel this way much more so.

I cannot see how any individuals karma farming sessions negatively impact anyone else’s play experience; hence, the motivation behind this system eludes me. To be honest, if I did not want Twilight I would not be farming karma at all and just enjoying my time in WvW (which while it has been derided by some, I find to be quite fun).

Compared to the above example of 12-14k (which is pretty intense!), I was going at a rate of about 10-12k per hour in Cursed Shore, and had farmed about 300k karma in total for my legendary as of the patch last night. I estimated that I would need about 80 more hours of farming karma (~2 weeks of a full time job!) to obtain the amount of obsidian shards needed for mystic clovers and gifts. Since I typically had to relog after 40 minutes of farming to reset my DR pre-patch, I do not know how I will actually meet my goals. I am hoping that some people will come up with a creative way around this block, but only time will tell.

The only reasoning behind their actions that I can fathom is that they may want to slow down the rate at which people are obtaining legendaries. From my own experiences, I farmed a Thunderfury in vanilla WoW where I had the help of my whole guild. That was a major farm. For Twilight, the fact that I am working on it solo makes me feel the amount of effort is pretty comparable.

Norn does less Whirling Wrath damage than Human

Statistically speaking, you have nowhere enough samples for accurate data.

That is untrue. As I mentioned earlier, the standard error of the mean for Nismoz’s two data sets are 11 and 31 respectively. The two data sets are discrepant by about (1050-921)/sqrt(11^2+31^2) = 3.9 standard deviations; the probability of this occurring by pure random chance is about 1-in-16000. It’s fair to say that either his conclusions are accurate or there is some other systematic bias in his measurements. Either way, the sample size is not the issue.

Thank you for the wonderful answer. I’m a mathematician (not a statistician), but have been using some t-tests in my recent work. It is very robust with low sample size. My rudimentary understanding is that having a larger sample size would increase power/reduce the type 2 error (i.e. reducing the chance for false negatives). If the above data lead to the rejection of the null hypothesis I do not understand why we would need to increase the sample size.
