So as I understand it Engineers got another update to take care of their hobo sacks by simply removing them 100%, and they even got a promise that the old hobo sacks will be available as craftable backpacks. That is a fantastic compromise between those who like it and those who can’t stand it, so why can’t there be one for aegis? It’s not as simple as offering it as a shield skin, but surely something can be worked out where, like the hobosacks, they’re off by default but avaliable to those crazy folk who actually like it.

I think when people say its a visual cue, they’re trying to speak for anet. No other condition has such a huge animation so they’re assuming that Anet did it because they wanted it to be really obvious. There’s probably some truth to that, but that doesn’t change the fact that its pointlessly irritating.

I would actually prefer them to remove ALL visual effects of boons. The buff bar icons are more than sufficient for group play, and knowing what boons a random player standing near you (who is clearly not in your group and thus you cannot see the buff bar)has active is 100% pointless in PvE.

I think the visual effects are fine, it’s just that aegis specifically is so intrusive and, worse of all, completely out of the player’s control

Nope, like everybody else has said. Why should aegis have a huge tell but I can’t tell when other classes have their boons without looking at their bar? Its total nonsense.

So are you in support of it being changed, or are you in support of it staying. Cause it sounds like you dont like that it does have a huge tell.

Also the Shift Control H hiding Aegis would be nice enough, at least we could take screenshots without that stupid thing in the way.

I disagree, because even if you can hide it for screenshots, its still up the rest of the time. Its ugly and stops people from looking the way they want to look. Every time you pull your weapons out it’s there… mocking me…

They don’t need the big fugly blue shield to know we have aegis all they have to do is target us and look at the icons below our names where all the boons/condi are displayed for everybody in game.

It’s easier to just keep looking at the opponent’s character then it is to look up every half second to see if they’ve applied a boon or not

If you follow that logic, they should make a big semitransparent animation for every other boon and condition to make it easier for everybody to know what has been applied.

This is where the argument that it’s an important visual cue starts to fall apart. Stability is just as an important boon as aegis, maybe even more so, but it has no visual cue at all, let alone one as obvious as aegis.

I like the way that Aegis looks, especially when I am using a greatsword or hammer.

If that makes me a troll, then so be it.

I don’t think you’re a troll, I just think the problems of aegis far outweigh its benfeits, especially in regards to a lack of player control

What if they just leave it as it is?

Then guardians will have to keep being forced to look at something that isn’t nneeded and not wanted.

I could go full Vayne mode on that comment, but I’ll leave it as it is.

Fortunately I have no such restraint.

Why not just have a double/chain?
Activate aegis for all -> ‘explode’ aegis
I’d like this for a variety of reasons, but that way you could pop it when you don’t want to see it

This isn’t a horrible idea, but wouldn’t it still require constantly using the skill every time it went off cooldown? I’ve often wondered why aegis applies itself automatically anyways. Shouldn’t it be actively applied like other buffs? It’s basically the reverse of blindness so why do guardians not control it like thieves control blindness?

What if they just moved the aegis effect from the arm to floating over the head?

Its an interesting idea, and better than what we have now, but it still leaves guardians with a problem that no other class has, which is to deal with a permanent effect of some kind that they cannot ever remove. It would move the issue from clipping and obscuring shields and offhands, to clipping an obscuring helmets. The issue should be removed by altering the way aegis behaves.

I don’t feel limited at all.

I didn’t say you specifically were limited. I said players, in general. Sure, you like the Dragon’s Jade skin and probably don’t want to use anything else, but what about others? What if you wanted to use Ghastly Grinning Shield skin?

Or if you just want a dark fiery guardian with fused weapons without the g@y blue shield ruining the whole look.

The color may be the worst part of it. If it were clear, there would just be some distortion to contend with, but because it’s blue, you have to also deal with color clashing, and the fact that it is partially opaque.

Use the Jade Shield, problem solved.

Dragon Jade shield is one of shields that aegis doesn’t ruin, but players shouldn’t be limited in what they can use because of a goofy effect that doesn’t really accomplish anything, and that they have no control over.

No man, this is ok, because you can still see your weapons if you look around the aegis!

Nah bruh, it block the weapon completely, here’s a screenshot of the one angle where it does that to prove my point

I should point out that I didn’t spend any time finding an angle where aegis blocked it. I just positioned the camera 90 degrees on my left side and took a screenshot. Do you think the image would have really been better if I moved the camera? If I moved it towards my back, the image would have actually gotten worse.

I would love to have a toggle, it would be the best of both worlds. However, there are some problems with that. First off, any client side toggle would be the worst solution. You wouldn’t see it, but other people still would. If you were in any screenshots that somebody else took, your aegis would still be there, mocking you from beyond the grave. Everything else in the game lets you control how others see you – armor and weapon skins, dyes, outfits, makeover kits… imagine how empty those would seem if only you could see their effects.

Next, people have been complaining about this since before time began, and Anet hasn’t made any changes to it. Its clear they have bigger priorities than this, and that’s fine, but so long as they do, its not realistic to expect them to code a complex toggle. The simplest, least complicated solution is the most likely to be implemented, and the least complicated solution is to simply get rid of the effect. There are those who say that its an important visual cue. I disagree. First off, its on the buff bar like every other effect. Second, stability can be just as important but it has no visual cue. Third, there’s no cue for endurance and dodge is a much more powerful version of aegis.

I see a lot of people saying that they like the look of aegis and so don’t want it to go away. I think its great that you can make the best of a bad situation like that. It’s great that you’re going for a look that isn’t completely ruined by aegis. But put yourself in the shoes of someone for whom aegis wouldn’t match at all. What if you were trying to go for a fiery aesthetic? A baby blue shield completely kittens all that up. What if you were an edgelord going for supermegapitchblack? Again, a baby blue shield looks ridiculous.

The appearance of aegis forces guardians to work within certain limitations to avoid looking absurd. No other class has to deal with this. It removes control of the player’s appearance and forces them to accept a certain aesthetic. It clips horribly though shields and gets in the way of offhands. It shines like a beacon, constantly drawing attention to it, and if you don’t like the way it looks, that gets really really irritating.

More angles where you can’t see it than you can’t? Its huge and extends way past your arm! You can always see it. It plays a “role” in nearly every angle. Sure, there are only a few worst possible angles, but that doesn’t make it any less unfair that it’s a concern at all.

The point I was trying to make is that, even if it’s not perfectly overlapping, its still a distracting nuisance that you can’t ever make go away

Sure, when you hold it at an angle so it specifically blocks whatever.

That being said, sure, some people don’t like it. However, plenty of people do; asking for it to be removed is grossly unfair to all of them.

If you have to specifically position your camera to avoid your screenshot being ruined by a shield, I consider that a problem. Even if it wasn’t position just so, the shield would still be there, and I’d still consider it a problem. And I don’t consider it unfair. It just puts aegis in line with all the other buffs with subtle and, more importantly, optional graphic effects. Consider for a moment if might made your arm catch fire. There are a lot of people who liked fiery edgy demon builds who would love that. But what about everyone else? Then consider that for warriors, might was on permanently.

I don’t know what image you were trying to show me, but I think I might understand why you were confused. I don’t know too much about programming, but I think it shouldn’t be that hard to remove something from a game ? It’s not like it is game breaking by changing a few things, especially something that has been bugging the guardian community for as long as gw2 exists. There was one time I requested the flute to be fixed by inserting a “pause” button instead of “unequipping” the instrument, anet reacted to that pretty fast and included it in the following patch.
I mean, for others, this might not be a big deal, but for people like me who tends to design my character, even if the choice is bad, it is indeed a big deal.
It’s like having a fly in your room, you don’t care for it at first, but if it’s still there after hours, it will surely become very annoying.

That’s a good way of putting it. If you put together a loadout that you’re proud of, its never going to be as good as you want it because aegis is always there, always glowing. Its grates on the nerves more and more as time goes on, unless you happen to like it, in which case you’re just crazy.

And that is why i dont use shields on guardian anymore. As soon as i make “The Flameseeker Prophecys” im giving it to my mesmer….

I just don’t use shield on my Guardian because it’s bad…

The deep, dark truth is that aegis inevitably ruins many shields, but the cost was negligable so long as Shield was never good on Guardian.

This is such a defeatist attitude though.

  • Aegis ruins the look of shields but it’s ok because…
  • Shields are poorly balanced and useless

Neither one of these should be true!

What if in HoT shield receives some serious buffs such that it becomes meta? Would you still be ok with the effects of aegis? What if focus becomes meta? Would you, who spent a lot of money on the anomaly, be ok with it being permanently covered up with aegis? So much attention is devoted to shields because the affects of aegis are so much worse on them, but don’t forget foci. They have some of the most unique and interesting skins in the game, and they’re all covered up by aegis too. It really truly needs to go, no matter how you look at it.

This is why aegis needs to change. No other effect has such an intrusive animation to it, and players have no choice but to have it up. The only other thing I can think of that might be a viable solution is to turn off auto aegis on demand, but given how unimportant the issue is to Anet even that solution seems like its too much work to be realistic.

That is the point. It ruins screenshots with your weapons drawed.

Not only that but if you ever want to do any kind of role playing, or just plain like having your weapons drawn while standing around, it’s there. Its sufficiently annoying and accomplishes sufficiently little (especially in PvE) that it should have its behaviour altered.

It’s been nearly 3 years and the aegis visual effect still needs to go, for all the same reasons: it ruins the visuals of almost every offhand in the game, especially shields. If you think its an important visual cue for players, then there are only two realistic options:

  • Aegis visual only appears when in combat
  • Aegis visual only appears in PvP and WvW

There are other effects such as retaliation and Signet of Rage, but unlike aegis you can turn those off by swapping skills or just not using the buff. All guardians are stuck with aegis all the time, no matter what they do. Changing the effect won’t work for this reason: its still permanent.

Lots of people have suggested an option to toggle the appearance on and off. That’s not going to work. First off, the effects of aegis are universally negative. I’m glad you like using one out of the five shields that aegis doesn’t ruin, but its insane to think that it should be kept in any capacity.

Second, it won’t work pragmatically, because Anet can’t be bothered to code that in the game. It’s been nearly three years without any change. At this point we’d all be grateful for the most rudimentary fix. Asking them to code a special toggle switch for this is not realistic.

Anet, you fixed the engineer hobo sack and we all commend you for it, so why haven’t you yet fixed the equally detrimental effects of Aegis? After all, it must have been pretty embarrassing to publish the horribly clipped guardian longbow image on your Dragonhunter blog post.

Ogre Wars in new game update!

Psycho Robot.7835

I can’t give a “soon” on this one, but it is being looked at and the problems were identified and repro’d by QA. Once the bugs are written though it’s out of my hands until a fix is delivered to us for testing.

This chain and a few others that come to mind are a bit fragile and the team might opt for a better, but more time consuming to fix, solution. On our side we spent the better part of several months tracking this down this issue (and other meta chain bugs) from threads here, other forums, the wiki, and on live by debugging the chains that are stuck.

I wish I could give you much better news, but I also don’t want you to feel like you’re shouting into a void.

Any chance you can tell us of these other meta chain bugs that you’ve been trying to reproduce the bugs for (and whether or not you’ve gotten them written off for fixes)?

Personally, I’m really hoping that the Devouring the Brand meta in Iron Marches gets a fix. I’ve never been able to experience that chain properly. Don’t think anyone has been able to.

I did just last week. If I had known I was witnessing a miracle I’d have taken some mushrooms beforehand.

Idea for new quaggan characters

. . . just like quaggans, they fail completely at existence and are sad, lumpy, useless, pathetic things.

This made me laugh harder than I probably should have, considering how your post started. But this is pretty much how I feel about them as a race. I’m not all for genocide, unless it comes to humans, but quaggans really are so useless and excessively annoying that I kind of wish them killed off. The fact that people find them so cute and they are EVERYWHERE makes me want to join my courtier siblings and slaughter them all, after the humans of course, or maybe before, to be decided.

With that said. I am all for these two coming to be. As when/if I find them it will remind me of this post and give me a hearty chuckle, yet again. And because, as you said, they fit the profile quite nicely.

We are kindred spirits in our defiant hatred of quaggans.

Idea for new quaggan characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Psycho Robot.7835

I really love quaggans as they are but I would like to suggest an idea for two new quaggan characters. All I have right now are names, but that’s all quaggans need. Apart from names all quaggans are the same so all that is already decided. Anyways the two names I have in mind are Phobos and Deimos. These are each very good names for quaggans, because Phobos means fear and Deimos means terror, which are the primary things quaggans feel. They are also the names of the two martian moons. This also suits quaggans very well because one of them is slowly spiraling into the planet and is going to crash, and the other is slowly spiraling away from the planet and is going to fly off into space. In other words, just like quaggans, they fail completely at existence and are sad, lumpy, useless, pathetic things.

Thank you for your consideration.

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

Overflows are across all servers. The irony is that due to poor scaling algorithms, on low population servers, you need to guest to a server you know will be full, just so you can get into an overflow, since you know it has more people than your home server.

I agree that the scaling isn’t that great. I just went on an attempt that had at least 30 on every knight and failed on two of them. I want to tell people not to group at one, but knowing that everyone gets loot if one is downed, and that its very unlikely for any to be downed unless its maxed, its hard to justify.
