2 weeks ago, when Fractured was released, the Copper Fed Salvage-o-Matic was changed from a basic (white) rarity item to a rare (yellow) rarity item. Along with this change, players were reporting that it now functioned just like a master salvaging kit. Additional testing indicated that it returned upgrades and rare materials at the same rate as a Master’s salvaging kit, but that it return ectos from rare items at a lower rate. Today it was changed back to a white item, and it began functioning as before.

At no point has a dev actually commented on this, and what exactly happened. Nothing was mentioned in the patch notes either. In the absence of any explanation, people are suggesting that it was a ploy to make people buy the CFSoM while it was on sale recently, expecting it to continue working like a Master’s kit. These people would not have otherwise bought one and if they wanted their money back for buying it while it was functioning better, Anet could throw their hands up and say “well, it was a bug, you knew how it was supposed to work”. Personally I don’t believe that this is the case, so how about someone from Anet says what exactly happened?

I think it is not a glitch. I think the copper gives more runes when used is to prevent champion farmers from farming for a long time without visiting a merchant. It’s slows them down because their bag space is being filled even when their items are salvaged.

You’re assuming they’d bother to vendor them. If it was less profitable to stop farming to sell them, champion farmers would just delete them.

The lack of response leads me to believe that its not as simple as “yes its a glitch” or “no its not”, perhaps some dark wizardry is afoot. Maybe gremlins broke into the Anet offices late at night and tinkered with the code, but nobody is 100% sure that some other department didn’t make that change intentionally, so they can’t say its a glitch.

Nobody is in danger of being banned for this bug, if it is even a bug. What would Anet have us do? Not use our CFSoM? Just because we get more essentially worthless sigils and runes? Nah.

The basic salvage kit also is getting higher drops of runes and sigils though.

So the issue is not with the CFSoM, but rather with the base kit being broken? Heh.

In any case, interested to see what comes of this. I hope there was nothing intentional about it, I’d hate to essentially be forced to buy the thing because it’d be so cheap. I guess in 2-3 months I’d have saved gold, sure.

Take what he said with a grain of salt. I’ve been using basic kits too and have noticed no change in the amount of sigils I’ve been receiving, and in addition, nobody else has ever reported basic kit functionality changing, neither here, nor in game, nor in the reddit threads about this.

That doesn’t mesh with my own experiences. Near as I can figure, the basic kit is working as it always has, and also this is the first time I’ve heard anyone reporting basic kits getting more runes/sigils.

With this most recent update, the CFSoM’s item rarity was changed from basic (white) to rare (yellow) and players are reporting that it now appears to function identically to a Master’s Salvage Kit. The item description still says that it has the same stats as a Basic Salvage Kit. Anet has never actually said anything about this that I could find, and it wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes. So is this intentional? What’s the story?

the way players report it working is more indicative of what it does than is a description in the gem store, and players trust that more. Anet is in the wrong because there is a mistake on their part.

Its not about savings, it never was about savings, its about convenience… an unlimited supply of the most common salvaging kit is worth it on its own merit. People calculating what it would cost vs buying that amount of salvage kits are completely missing the point.

I would rather it stay as a basic kit at 3c per use than to have it turned into a master’s kit at 58c per use. I burn through basic kits like nobody’s business, but I go through 1 mystic kit per month, at most.

Why do you assume that champion farming is what caused the gem price increase? Most people who farm farm to get precursors. I would argue that super rich tp flippers are buying gems to get all the gem store exclusive skins that anet is always releasing.

Always funny when someone gets snippy but then makes a fool of themselves.

Anyways, in order to get the crossing you need to craft it in the mystic forge. The recipe is 1 gift of souls, 1 eldritch scroll, 100 mystic coins, and 20 superior sigils of the night. The gift of souls must also be crafted in the mystic forge, but in order to craft it, you have to learn it from a recipe sheet, which must ALSO be crafted in the mystic forge. However its really not worth your time. In order to craft the recipe sheet, you need 10k candy corn, 10k nougats, and some other stuff… but it would cost you a fortune. Its best to just buy the staff off the trading post, already completed.

Regarding Cadence of release: This is not something we plan to change in terms of timing and I wanted to make that clear from the outset.

I’m disappointed to hear this. I don’t see why the development team feels the need to release content so fast. If the content starts being fun, adequately rewarding, polished, and bug free, then there’s obviously no problem with rapid releases, however I doubt that this can be done, and honestly, even if it can be done, I would just wonder how much better it could be if the release schedule were slower.

The Zerg! This is an interesting problem that we had actually fixed to an extent in an earlier release where we created a meta goal that forced players to split up into groups. I really enjoyed this and the feedback was excellent. Personally I quite enjoy the zerg sometimes in PVE ( I tend to be less of a ‘zerger’ in WvW) but I also really enjoy group play in the open world as many of you have mentioned. I would love to see more of this in the open world.

The only thing I could think that you mean by this is Tequatl, since as far back as I can remember, its been zergs. The last releases have been zerging bosses in the crown pavilion, zerging aethers in clockwork chaos, zerging candy corn in blood and madness, and zerging krait in tower of nightmares. Tequatl is really he only LS related content that forced players to split up for even a moment, and even then, you were still required to have 95% of players present all balled up by his right foot. Indeed, having lots of people by the turrets was actually a bad thing, since it scaled up the events and caused champions to spawn. If you’re referring to the battery phases, that was just taking 1 giant zerg and turning it into 4 smaller zergs. Truthfully if you want to address the zerg all you need to do is give enemies attacks that grow more powerful the more people they hit, and to remove the limit on how many players can be hit.

Now what? im so confused.

Jeez, it wasn’t that bad. The bloody prince fight was surprisingly awful, but I felt the rest of Halloween was done well. I wasn’t around last year, however.

If you were around for last year, you would know that basically everything was copied from last year, the labyrinth, the tower, the inquisition, mad king says… and the only thing they added was a huge grind for a mini and a bloody prince fight which you admit was terrible. Oh also RNG black lion chest skins. They get minimal credit this year for kitten they did last year, especially when the stuff they add is just dreadful. The entire event was such a non starter that people are confused when its over, left wondering, is that really all there is?

Remember Tybalt? I don’t. Because an interesting and fun character was killed off 3 missions after he was introduced, meanwhile a joyless robot continued to function for the entire story despite his power switch clearly being in the “off” position. How else could you explain his monotonous reaction to fighting dragons? Did he ever once raise his voice or laugh? Its fuzzy to me, probably because Trahearne excreted a mist of narcotics wherever he went.

The point is Tybalt is an awesome and entertaining character that should be your model when deciding on future characters we’re supposed to like. As far as characters we’re supposed to hate, rather than just be annoyed by, they need clear motives, believable methodology, and ideally they shouldn’t think they’re the bad guy.

Let them tell their tale. You don’t necessarily have to like or click with the entire cast of characters, but you’re not the one writing the tale either.

Its not “skipping to the end” when 1. they’ve done this 4 times so far and 2. they tell you its her doing on the FRONT PAGE. And nobody is complaining about things being “given away” anyways. That’s one of the most puzzling assessments I’ve ever read. If you did indeed want to get the candy corn for the mini, you could do frostgorge where you sell everything for a while, and then go back to frostgorge the way you normally do it. You’re not losing anything, because the time spent at frostgorge would otherwise be spent at the jumping puzzle, the only difference is, you spend a fourth the time at frostgorge.

100 ToT bags is about 300 pieces of candy corn. At 65c per piece (and falling) that’s 1.95g per hour. To compare, Frostgorge is roughly 8g an hour. If you want the mini or the recipes, its better to go to Frostgorge and buy them.

Story Pacing & Continuity
There are some folks who feel that the Living World story is moving too slowly

Wait, what? Too slow? Is that what you got from the past 10 pages? All I see is person after person saying that the pace is too fast. Its nearly unanimous so far that the development feels rushed, and its not flushed out or properly refined. Plus, even the people who do feel that its too slow likely only feel like that because there is actually very little story in each patch. If you slowed down you could actually give enough story in a patch to last for a month, rather than deal with time constraints so overbearing that you can’t even fill two weeks worth.

Psycho Robot.7835

My main problem with the Living Story so far has been the rapid release schedule. Not only is this difficult to keep up with from a player’s standpoint, but it seems like its compromising the quality of the updates. I feel like the updates that get released don’t have nearly enough thought put into them. I’m you know that it takes time to release balanced, fun, and rewarding content, but whatever amount of time it takes currently is not enough.

A marvelous example is Clockwork Chaos. Spending the entire game farming aetherblades was extremely rewarding, and actually doing the minion events rewarded basically nothing. The consequence of this is that many players never actually completed an invasion. However this could have been predicted if there was enough time to think this through. Players are predictable, and they will do whatever makes the most money, or whatever rewards them the fastest. Its your duty to make sure that the predictable behaviour of players will not interfere with the principle goal of the encounter.

If that weren’t bad enough, I genuinely feel as though as soon as a team completes an event, they immediately start on another. There’s basically no time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and no break to actually balance some of the content. It was perfectly clear after the first few days that the reward structure of clockwork chaos basically ensured that no players would bother trying to complete it, but nothing was changed, because the team which produced it was probably already working on Tequatl Rising or Twilight Assault. There’s only time for some quick hot fixes for the most glaring of issues.

You also need to spend more time putting yourself in the players’ shoes. This halloween event is a lesson in that. You have released content which is basically fun for nobody.

  • The labyrinth doesn’t reward anything that warrants the trouble of going inside, and even in the most crowded servers, its a ghost town most of the day, so much so that latecomers are having trouble completing the meta.
  • The clocktower doesn’t award anything besides stuff you’d get from normal jumping puzzles, only much easier, except on the first run. On the first run you get exotic gloves where you can pick the stats, even hard to get stats like sentinels, celestial, and cavalier’s… if you get light or medium. If you get heavy, you’re left with standard craftable prefixes. Which is the bug? I’m not sure. Either you didn’t test it and made heavy unrewarding by accident, or you didn’t test it and made light and medium TOO rewarding by accident.
  • Lunatic Inquisition is completely unrewarding unless you deliberately suicide and get lucky enough to get a villager kill…. which is very difficult because most of the villagers have also committed suicide and are hunting down the handful of people who don’t realise that as a villager they can’t win and won’t be rewarded.
  • The only new skins are from the gem store. I understand its an important source of revenue, but its a real bummer when you can’t get the only new skin content from the game.
  • The cost of the recipes for the gifts and the mini are absurd, and its impossible to get them unless you buy the candy corn and rare mats on the trading post. Because of that, it becomes a matter of making money, not participating in the event.

I’m not saying that all holiday events have to be more rewarding, monetarily, than frostgorge, but they need to at least be fun. Players are willing to miss out on money for fun. Players are also willing to miss out on money for exclusive rewards. But when the event isn’t fun and you can just buy the required materials as with the halloween event, it just falls apart.

10 Candy Corn Cobs (10,000 Pieces of Candy Corn) and 10 Tyria’s Best Nougat Centers (10,000 Nougat Centers) along with 10 Piles of Crystalline Dust and 40 Bottles of Elonian Wine….for the recipe that will let me make the Gift of Souls for the Crossing.

To any developers who are reading this, but probably aren’t:

Making the recipe the hardest part to obtain in the entire process of making a rare weapon skin is utterly wrong. It’s like you people don’t even play your own game and try the get the skins the same way. Especially when I have to get this all in the next 2 weeks before I can’t anymore.

10,000 Pieces of Candy Corn? Possible…maybe. But it isn’t fun.

10,000 Nougat Centers? Without an insane amount of luck, or a lot of gold to burn in buying them off the Trade Post (ironically, buying the upgraded Nougats themselves in the long run is cheaper), there is no way to get enough by the time this event ends.

By the time I had even started playing, it was already past the first Halloween event. I’ve been punished for not being there the first time, just because I want to make The Crossing.

Guess it’s better to not have goals in the game, eh?

Unlocking the recipe is unprofitable and downright impossible, yes. UNLESS you had the recipe last year. Since there are lots of people who do, the price of the staff is high, but totally doable even for someone who isn’t a hardcore farmer. If its your goal to get the staff, just farm a bit of gold and buy it on the trading post. If you want to craft it yourself, buy the gift of souls and farm the other mats as you normally would.

Its completely stupid and asinine that unlocking the recipe is as hard as it is, but whatever, its just poor playtesting. It doesn’t mean you should throw your hands up in the air and give up on the crossing and on Anet. Just let them know you think its stupid and get the staff in whatever ways are avaliable. Done and done.

Also there’s still the possible that come tuesday, the second part of the halloween event will make candy corn and rare mats much more plentiful, and should that be the case you can carry on with what you wanted to do all along.

  • Players will have an opening instance where they revisit the dungeon from last year, and things seem the same, but then Scarlet shows up and you have to fight Aetherblades. Again.
  • Rather than being instanced, the dungeon will be open world with frequently spawning events, introducing a new type of foe: frosty clockwork minions. You will be chilled 100% of the time in this area.
  • There will be special legendary frosty bosses that have one unique mechanic that is powerless against the zerg, but that have enormous hp pools so it takes 10 minutes to kill them.
  • The minions will drop frozen clockworks scraps which can be turned in for minis and some useless holiday garbage that no one will really want. Maybe frosty clockwork sandwiches. It will take thousands of them for the mini.
  • New skins in the gem store, but it requires a claim ticket. Impossible to get by actually playing the game.

Stacking at the candy corn boss is a good idea, so the candis aoe fields are always on the zerg. Candis aoe gives a large damage boost and makes you immune against his ranged attack, so its a win win even if you insist on continuing your ranged wep in melee range.

That’s wrong. Sometimes he lays a candy AoE field at his feet, sometimes he lays 4 AoEs around him in a circle. Its independent of the position of the players.

Even with them having a small chance to drop this isn’t farmable to get all the mats needed for the Gifts. Only way is to spend money on gems.

Spend money on gems? You can’t buy halloween mats from the gem shop. I think you got your generic rubber stamp anti gem store rant confused with some actually valid criticisms on the amount of mats required for these recipes.

I also think you might be confused, because you don’t throw the candy corn and nougats into the mystic forge and receive the gift. You receive a recipe sheet from which you learn the recipe for the gift. You would still have to sink a ton of money into actually MAKING the gift, and then even MORE to actually make the weapon.

Basically, because tons of players crafted the recipe last year when it was dirt cheap compared to now, they can sell the things just above the cost of materials, because they didn’t sink 180g into the cost of the recipe. Therefore, it will always be cheaper to buy the weapons from them. At no point will it ever be worth it to have made the recipe sheet.
